"Recent fluid inclusion and stable isotopic studies in the Bousquet mining district have identified spatial and temporal trends in mineralization temperatures and isotopic compositions of vein forming fluids. These studies indicate that mineralizing temperatures were lower during sterile vein formation (T=200-300°C) than during auriferous vein formation (T = 300-400°C), and that 8 80 values of minerals in sterile veins are lower by 1-3 %o than in associated auriferous veins. In addition to these small differences in 8 80 within individual mineralized zones, a trend of increasing 8 80 values of vein minerals is identified from west to east across the district, with 8 80 of vein minerals increasing by4-6%o. Quantitative evaluation of potential causes of the observed oxygen isotopic shifts suggests that the best explanation for these trends is the derivation of the mineralizing fluids from an isotopically inhomogeneous terrain in which the fluid isotopic compositions are controlled by the isotopic compositions of the host lithologies due to high rock/water ratios in these source terrains. This inhomogeneous source terrain is interpreted as consisting of the Blake River Group volcanics (low 8 80 component) and the adjoining Kewagama and Cadillac Group sediments (high 8 80 component).The genesis of the hydrothermal fluids is attributed to crustal heating during metamorphism, with the fluids representing metamorphic dewatering products and/or fluids incorporated during deposition and burial of the host lithologies. Ductile deformation of the fluid source regions impeded fluid migration during metamorphism; the ultimate release of the mineralizing fluids is attributed to the penetration to depth of vertical structures (fault and shear zones) during brittle deformation of the crust under waning metamorphic conditions. Release of fluids caused by this puncturing of the closed hydrologic source regime produced a localized zone of lowered pressure, drawing fluids from adjacent lithologies toward the fault zones, feeding further hydrothermal fluid upwelling. Au mineralization resulted from chemical processes related to cooling of the hydrothermal fluids and/or interaction with lithologies encountered during fluid migration; the level of crust at which Au deposition occurred likely migrated upward with the thermal anomaly caused by hydrothermal fluid upwelling, eventually reaching the level of current exploitation. Cessation of fluid flow along the vertical structures is attributed to inadequate recharge of the hydrothermal systems as fluid contents were depleted in the lithologies proximal to the vertical structures and/or sealing of the structures by mineral deposition."

INTRODUCTION MY SUBJECT is one which would require several speakers and many hours of time for adequate presentation in all its many facets. Because of the widely varying market requirements and coal seams mined, the coal industry of the United States bas of necessity employed many types of preparation facilities to satisfy its needs. Predominance of Baum-type jigs, however, bas marked the mechanical cleaning installations since the early thirties, and these machines continue to hold the lead. CLEANING As a matter of record we find that, at the end of 1948, we had 480 mechanical cleaning plants in operation. Of these, 19 used air cleaners only,?400 used water washers only, . and 61 used dry and wet washers in combination . Due to the increased use of spray water underground on cutting and mechanical mining equipment, there has in recent years been a marked downward trend in dry cleaning installations. In fact, the moisture in dry-cleaned fines has been increased to such an extent by spraying that recent dry cleaning installations have incorporated thermal drying ahead of the dry cleaning units in an effort to overcome the varying and increasingly higher moisture percentages in their raw coal feeds. While on the subject of dry cleaning, it might be well to bring to your attention one of our most recent developments in this art. I refer to the McNally-Brusset vacuum jig.

Introduction The work, of which some of the results are described in this paper, was started with the object of investigating the properties of certain binary alloys of titanium made from powders. Our main interest was in the possible use of such alloys in gas turbines. We were attracted to titanium, as have been others, by its high melting point (I,724° ± 11°C.), its low density (4.54), and the likelihood that, if a relatively wide use could be found for the metal, it might become available in commercial quantities at a fairly reasonable price. The readiness with which the metal reacts with hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen was recognized from the very beginning. At the same time there seemed a good chance that alloys could be produced which, because of the formation of protective films, would resist the attack of these and other corrosive agents. No specifications were drafted to cover the 'quality' of the titanium hydride powder which was used in our work and which was, to judge by the results of a few preliminary experiments, the most useful source of titanium then (1944) available in sufficient amount for our purpose. During the course of our work, the need for such specifications became very clear (see Sections 9 to 12 of this pa per). Even today, lack of knowledge regarding the effects on titanium of impurities, some of which may later be looked upon as essential elements in commercial alloys of titanium, and difficulties in manufacture, make the preparation of specifications for commercial titanium and titanium compounds a doubtful procedure. The papers presented at the 1948 Symposium on Titanium, sponsored by the U.S. Office of Naval Research lend colour to this view. At the time our work was commenced, one had to depend upon the manufacturer to supply what he considered to be his 'best' material. It may be some time before we can ask for more than this, the question as to what is his 'best' being left to the manufacturer to decide. However, in this connection the results of our study may be of some value and on that account we are constrained to publish them.

The SMCO copper plant is located in DR Congo, and was designed by China NERIN Engineering Co., Ltd. The process is a typical hydrometallurgical plant with Leach-SX-EW, with the project treating the oxide minerals with agitation leaching, followed with three stage of solvent extraction and two stages of stripping, and using permanent SS cathodes to produce LME grade copper. Because of the special characteristic of the ore, what contains 2 different type of oxides (one high carbonate oxide and the other low carbonate), there are several new technical measures that have been developed and adopted for the plant. For example, different grinding, leaching, and filtering are used to treat different oxides. This paper, presents the project process, engineering design, construction and commissioning. The paper also describes some of the problems encountered during plant commissioning, such as the agitation leaching tank issues, and corrosion in the settler-mixer. This paper discusses some NERIN solutions to these problems, and explains the use of the CN filter, which is used to filter PLS to treat high level suspend solids, instead of the traditional sand filter. Finally, this paper also proposes steps / measures for further improvement for future plant operation.

"This paper presents results of ongoing research being carried out at the University of New South Wales into improved methods for estimating rock mass strength. In this paper the rock mass strength of Hawkesbury Sandstone is assessed. An estimate is first made based on an extensive database of intact rock strength data being collated by the author and the assumption that the rock mass strength can be determined following the GSI approach. The resulting strength envelope is then compared with nine documented case studies where stress induced failure has occurred in tunnels excavated within Hawkesbury Sandstone. The case studies cover a range of conditions:• construction dates from 1880s to 2006• spans from 3.2 to 12.5 m• depths from 17 to 124 m• excavation methods of drill & blast, roadheader and TBM.Finite element modelling is used to assess the likely magnitudes of the stresses present at the time of failure. The finite element models are interrogated to provide the values of major and minor principal stresses in and around the mapped failure zone. Failure and stable points are then compared to the rock mass strength envelope(s) of Hawkesbury Sandstone derived using the Hoek-Brown criterion and spalling criteria. The Hoek-Brown rock mass strength envelope differentiates between the ‘failed’ and ‘stable’ zones remarkably well.INTRODUCTIONStress induced failures of rock masses are fortunately rare in civil tunnelling. However, when they occur they provide an opportunity to calibrate an assumed rock mass strength criterion. This paper compares an estimate of rock mass strength for the Hawkesbury Sandstone with the following cases where stress induced failure occurred in tunnels excavated within Hawkesbury Sandstone.• Cataract & Devines Tunnels of the Upper Canal (Upper Nepean Scheme)• Malabar Outfall Tunnel• Sydney liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) Storage Cavern• Northside Storage Tunnel• Cross City Tunnel• Lane Cove TunnelTwo-dimensional finite element modelling is used to assess the likely magnitudes of the stresses present at the time of the failures. "SGS Minerals commissioned an internal R&D program to develop in-house expertise to design, set up and operate REE separation pilot campaigns at its Lakefield, Canada site. A team approach was used that included expert consultants in the field of REE separation as well as in-house expertise supported by the on-site Analytical Laboratories.A mini pilot scale SX circuit was designed and constructed consisting of several modular banks of 30 stages each. About 80 stages of mixer-settlers were used to separate Pr and Nd from La and Ce contained in a synthetic REE chloride stream simulating the raffinate from an initial La-Nd|Sm-Lu+Y separation.Two pilot campaigns were operated totalling 25 days of 24/7 operation with 99.4% plant availability in the final 20 day campaign. Purities of > 99.9% in the Pr-Nd strip liquor and > 99% in the La- Ce raffinate were achieved and simultaneously sustained in the second campaign for prolonged operating periods. Key to controlling and adjusting the circuit was the rapid assay turnaround (as low as 2 hours) provided by the on-site SGS analytical lab. This permitted the operating team to modify conditions and observe the effect of changes relatively quickly considering the large number of stages. A portable XRF analyser was also used to track evolving assay trends in the circuit. The small physical size of the circuit enabled longer operation with a limited amount of sample.This paper discusses the design of the circuit, operating conditions, some of the key operating factors and controls and results obtained.INTRODUCTIONSGS Minerals commissioned the design of and built a solvent extraction (SX) pilot plant for the separation of rare earth elements (REE). The plant consists of a battery of 120 mixer-settlers set up in a dedicated piloting facility.The purpose of the programme was to develop capabilities and in-house expertise in REE SX separation technology. The program aimed to establish operating procedures, sampling regimes, and analytical methodologies and protocols for this type of process/plant. A team comprised of SGS personnel and several external consultants with prior industrial and REE separation piloting experience was assembled to achieve these objectives."

"It is frequently necessary to excavate a tunnel for Civil Engineering purposes, or wells for petroleum exploitation, in laminated rock mass like schists or phyllites or in highly foliated gneisses. The determination of the pre-existing in situ stresses is essential, in order to assure the stability of these excavations. In most cases, the pre-existing triaxial stress field is arbitrary in relation to the tunnel or well axis. For these rock masses the concept of Generalised Plane Strain can be correctly utilized.There are closed form solutions for the calculation of stresses in anisotropic rock masses under Generalised Plane Strain conditions (Lehknitskii, 1981 and Hong , 1994). Based on these analytical solutions, established for the cases of Generalised Plane Strain, a synthetic problem will be formulated: the theoretical in situ stress tensor acting on this rock mass will be determined, with the aid of Bayesian Inverse Problem Techniques, as developed by de Mello Franco (2009). Additionally, the reliability of results obtained will be evaluated, in accordance with the research performed by this author. INTRODUCTIONThe Inverse Problem Technique, as developed in the paper, is based on the definitions and concepts obtained from the current literature and used for the solution of Inverse Problems, but the innovation to be presented is the utilisation of Bayesian Techniques and the determination of the reliability of the results obtained. This will be shown in a synthetic example where the determination of the in situ stress tensor, from strain measurements in a drill hole is supposedly performed. It is assumed that this drill has its axis arbitrarily placed in relation to the rock mass. Generalised Plane Strain conditions will hold for use with problem. The equations of Beltrami – Mitchel, in agreement to Lekhnitskii (1981) and Ong (1994), will be used in this synthetic case, for calculating strains, hypothetically measured in the hole before the final excavations. Finally a synthetic example for the determination of the in situ stress in a fully anisotropic rock mass, based on Bayesian Techniques and its reliability, developed in de Mello Franco (2009) is presented."

On September 3rd, 1947, the Acadia Coal Company put into operation a central coal preparation plant. This plant was designed to process all coals mined by this Company in the Pictou County coal field. The problem, briefly, was to make a three-way separation of the raw coal fed into the plant. It was desired to remove all stone, metal, and wood from the marketable coal and to produce a splint coal from the raw material which would be suitable for making power. This splint coal product is belted directly to the power plant which is adjacent to the wash plant. To attain this object it was therefore necessary, first, to wash the raw coal, removing all splint, stone, metal, and wood. The stone, metal, wood, and highest-ash splint had then to be removed by a second washing in order to obtain the lower-ash splint for use in the power plant. The plant is on the east side of the Allan colliery, in the town of Stellarton (see accompanying photograph). It is of steel frame construction with wood siding, covered on the exterior with corrugated galvanized iron. Considerable concrete had to be poured for the foundation piers as the plant site is largely 'fill' ground. This necessitated the construction of extremely heavy footings containing a large amount of reinforcing steel. In all, 884 cu. yds. of concrete were poured for the various pits, tanks, and foundations; its average test was about 3,500 lb. per square inch. At the time the plant was constructed, the steel shortage in Canada and the United States was acute and, in order to obtain steel for the structure which is four stories high- an unused part of the Allan bankhead was torn down. Enough steel was obtained from this demolition to fabricate the new plant.

Thank you for your introduction, and thank you to the CIM for inviting me to make a presentation to you today. This is my first opportunity to report to you on the status of the Canadian uranium industry and I am pleased to tell you that the industry is in good shape, and well positioned for the future. As you will no doubt be aware, Saskatchewan benefits from the world?s largest known highgrade deposits of uranium as well as from a high level of provincial, public and northern community support. It is within this unique combination of geology and community that our industry operates. Uranium markets have been extremely competitive for a number of years for several reasons. First, deregulation in the nuclear electric power industry has tended to encourage fuel buyers to use up their large inventories built up at a time when rapidly increasing demand was anticipated. Second, alternate sources from surplus commercial stocks, military materials and reprocessed fuel have presented a major additional source of uranium supply. Today, these secondary supplies are meeting about half of uranium reactor feed requirements. Canada (that is, Saskatchewan) is the world?s largest ?natural? uranium producer with about a third of the global production. Saskatchewan?s mines produced more than 30 million pounds of yellowcake in 2002. Despite low prices, steady demand for uranium will continue. In fact, an increase in world uranium production in 2002 helped feed a more than 3 per cent increase in reactor fuel demand. Low cost production is important for surviving low market prices, but investments are based on longer-term strategies rather than simply responding to market cycles. Cost is not the only issue. In these times of increasing regulatory and public scrutiny we must continue to earn the trust of our stakeholders by adopting the highest standards and staying on the leading edge of technical, social and environmental developments. Managing these issues is as important as traditional concerns of ore grade and cost of production. The last two decades of the 20th century saw the Province of Saskatchewan rise to prominence as the leader in uranium production from facilities, which were at the time deemed world class. These facilities are now either at - or nearing - the end of their production years. We are now bringing on new facilities that will position Saskatchewan to remain the world leader in uranium production for many years to come.

Arsenic is an unresolved problem in the mining industry considering the fact that most of the new copper deposits have high arsenic contents; stricter environmental restrictions for handling, transporting and processing complex materials are expected and stable abatement of arsenic is not extensively applied. In 2018 Chile produced 24.5% of the total copper from concentrates and in the future copper production in Chile is expected to increase, mainly associated with production of concentrates that will also contain more arsenic. China has set an import benchmark of maximum 0.5% for arsenic content in copper concentrates and this value is expected to be more restrictive in the future. On the first day of 2018 China banned the importation of scrap. Blending practice has been a business option, but it is not sustainable in the future, as “normal” copper concentrates become less and less clean. By the end of 2018, Chile formulated new regulations, increasing the capture of SO2 and arsenic to 95%. In order to comply with these regulations Chilean smelters had to make large invest large amounts of money. Disposing of arsenic as a stable residue is a pending issue. EcoMetales is a 100% subsidiary of Codelco and provides the mining industry with environmental solutions. It has a plant near Calama in Chile that treats flue dust from smelters, refinery effluents and acid solutions from acid plants. EcoMetales is fully committed to contributing to the solution to the arsenic problem. Currently we are developing four main projects: 1) Concentrates treatment. A PLCC project considering the treatment of 200 ktpy of copper concentrates with arsenic from the northern district of Codelco; 2) EPAS DET project considering the treatment of 700 m3/d of weak acid solution with arsenic from the of El Teniente devision of the Codelco acid plant; 3) Borras project, considering the recovery of valuable metals (Cu, Ag, Ge, Pb) from the flue dust leaching plant; 4) Tailings project, considering the recovery of metal values from tailings. The purpose of this work is to present the trends and treatment processes for arsenic handling in the copper mining industry with a focus on the scorodite process. INTRODUCTION Between 2000 and 2015 the global copper concentrates production has grown from approximately eleven to fifteen million metric tons per year. Chile produced 26.5% of the total copper from concentrates and in the future copper production in Chile is expected to increase, mainly as a result of the production of concentrates (Figure 1)

These structures are generally designed to handle corrosive liquids and gases and have proved both satisfactory and economical in service in various industries in Canada. The specification of structures will be discussed in relation to materials, construction and workmanship, physical properties and methods of testing.

A process has been evaluated, on a continuous pilot plant scale, to treat refractory gold arsenopyrite/pyrite concentrates. The process consisted of biological leaching to partially oxidise sulphides, followed by pressure leaching for complete sulphide oxidation and arsenic precipitation, followed by liquor neutralisation and cyanidation of the autoclave residue for gold recovery. This paper provides a brief description of the treatment flowsheet and discusses some of the main parameters and results of the process. During integrated pilot plant campaigns, it was confirmed that acceptable sulphide oxidation and gold extraction of 96-98% could be achieved by a two-stage oxidation with BIOX® (4 days total retention time) followed by PDX (40 minutes retention time at 220°C). Only partial arsenic precipitation was achieved in the autoclave, followed by complete precipitation by neutralization under atmospheric conditions. The overall process could be significantly simplified, and capital and operating costs reduced, with a flowsheet modification allowing all of the BIOX® liquor to bypass the autoclave directly to the neutralization circuit.

"Recycling polymer based end-of-life materials as carbon resources for a partial replacement of coke/coal can make important contributions towards enhancing the environmental sustainability of steelmaking processes. An in-depth high temperature (1550°C) investigation has been carried on waste CDs/DVDs focussed specifically on char generation, characterization and dissolution into molten iron. The simultaneous presence of carbon and oxygen in polymeric chains on polycarbonate substrates resulted in the generation of a significant pore structure and exposed surfaces. Carbon dissolution studies into molten iron were carried out on the raw polymer as well on chars; high levels of carbon pick-up were observed in both cases after 15 minutes of contact at high temperatures. INTRODUCTIONOver the past sixty years, plastics have played an important part of our daily lives and are being increasingly used in all aspects of the global economy. More than 260 million tons of plastics are produced annually worldwide. Their rapid growth and extensive utilization with a short life span (such as packaging) has created a massive waste problem. Although the waste plastic component in municipal solid waste (MSW) amounts to only about 10 %, plastics have a high volume-to-weight ratio and these are generally not biodegradable. In Australia, ~19.20 % of plastics were recycled in 2009-2010 (PACIA, 2010); with the total consumption being estimated at 1,501,258 tonnes, 288,194 tonnes of plastics were recycled. There are serious environmental concerns with the two key waste management options, i.e. land filling and incineration, and there exists an urgent need for developing alternative recycling approaches. In this paper, we focus our attention on recycling waste CDs/DVDs polycarbonate substrates as a carbon resource in steelmaking.CDs/DVDs used for music/data/image are made from aromatic polycarbonate resin (hereafter abbreviated PC). This resin is also widely used as an engineering plastic in applications such as automobiles, mobile phones, notebook type personal computers, cameras & video cameras, electric & electronic appliances, fire equipment, life & living goods, roofing sheets, etc. High consumption and growth (~10% annually) of PC utilization is attributed to its excellent properties such as outstanding impact resistance, transparency, heat resistance, and dimensional stability. "Abstract - Electromagnetic surveys were conducted over the Yava sandstone-hosted lead deposit in Nova Scotia to evaluate the usefulness of such surveys for detecting and mapping sedimentary­ hosted metallic ore deposits. Both transient and multifrequency systems were used for that purpose. The deposit consists of three zones of disseminated galena which also contain minor amounts of pyrite and sphalerite filling the interstices of the sandstone grains. Each zone overlies a basement depression and is separated from the adjacent zone by an intervening basement high. A conductive shale layer underlies the galena-rich sandstone formation at all three zones.Because the concentration of galena (3% to 4% ) and other sulfides is too low to affect the resistivity of the sandstone formations for detection by ground electromagnetic (EM) methods, the strategy for our survey was to look for areas of basement depressions and the presence of conductive shale in those depressions by EM depth soundings. The presence of the galena-rich sandstone formations could be inferred because of the close association of these two features with the deposits in the Yava area. Both transient and multifrequency EM systems were successful in mapping the basement depressions and detecting conductive shale at the three known mineralized zones. The technique, therefore, seems to offer good prospects for mapping similar stratabound sedimentary-hosted sulfide deposits."

"The design, construction and operation of tailings dams is rapidly becoming a major consideration for most new mining developments, as well as for many existing operations. In North America, under pressure from public opinion, various government agencies have in recent years enacted legislation covering the design, construction and operation of tailings dams. In British Columbia, comprehensive legislation has been passed during the past year (1971). All of these new regulations may be placed into two broad categories: regulations concerning the safety of the dam and appurtenant structures, and regulations concerning the prevention of pollution. Both types of regulation affect the design of the tailings dam facilities. Consequently, they must be considered jointly by the designer. A good tailings dam design must satisfy the basic requirements of safety, pollution control, storage capacity and economy. To achieve this, 'the design must be based on a thorough understanding of both the geotechnical problems involved and the requirements of the mining development. Obviously, this requires close cooperation between the designing geotechnical engineers and the mining operators. This paper outlines the major engineering factors that should be considered in the investigation, design, construct ion and operation of tailings dams. Basic methods of tailings dam construction are reviewed and the advantages and disadvantages of each briefly discussed. Comparisons are made between the design and construction of conventional water supply dams and tailings dams. Examples are presented of some of the problems that may arise during construction and operation of a tailings dam. The paper also explains the need for basic instrumentation of tailings dams and for carrying out simple field tests and measurements during construction and operation. Of prime importance is the downstream monitoring of surface and subsurface seepage flows. These observations are invaluable where contamination of surface and/or subsurface water may become a contentious issue at some future date. Each tailings dam design must be based on a study of the particular requirements of that project. To make a proper evaluation, adequate data must be available concerning a large number of items•, including such things as: topography, hydrology, geology, subsoil properties, seismicity, government regulations, fineness of mill grind, mill water balance, availability of suitable construction materials, volume of water to be stored behind starter dam, downstream development or liability, and many others. The large number of variables involved in such an evaluation often result in the designer considering two or more alternative designs. Selection of the final design, which is usually based on detailed cost analyses of the alternatives, must be made in close consultation with the owner."

In the transformation of carbonaceous materials, such as peat, to coals of various grades, the changes are known to be both physical and chemical and the grade of coal finally produced depends on the stage to which alteration proceeded. Those changes, which are frequently spoken of as the results of metamorphism, are due to pressure with accompanying heat and, according to the amount of metamorphism to which the sediments with the included carbonaceous beds have been subjected, there is a gradation from peat to anthracite coal, and even to graphite. The improvement in the quality of the coal as a result of metamorphism is due to an increase of the carbon content of the coal and a corresponding loss of the volatile materials. This rise in the quality of the coal according to the degree of metamorphism is well illustrated by the coals of western Canada. In the Plains area, where the deformation and the attendant metamorphism of the sediments is comparatively small, the coals are lignites, whereas in the mountains, where deformation has been severe, the coals are semi-anthracites. Sub-bituminous and bituminous coals occur in the intervening areas. The same general relationship between the quality of the coal and the degree of metamorphism holds true for the Appalachian basin of the United States, where there is a progressive improvement in the quality of the coals from west to east, that is, from an area of comparatively slight metamorphism to an area of marked deformation in the Appalachian Mountain region. But while it is true that this relationship holds in a general way, it has been found that the improvement in the quality of the coal is not always uniformly progressive, and there may be local variations such that an area containing coal with a carbon content indicating low or medium metamorphism may be surrounded by areas in which the coals are of higher grade. These local variations in many cases can be explained, and they in no way detract from the general rule that, in a region exhibiting a progressive betterment in the quality of the coal from an area of low metamorphism to one of more marked deformation, the quality of the coal, i.e., the amount of fixed carbon in the coal, may be taken as an index of the degree of metamorphism of the coal as well as of the sediments in which it occurs, It has been pointed out (') that certain coals, such as cannels, are unreliable indicators of the varying degree of metamorphism because of the nature of the material from which such coal was derived. Such coals, however, are not known in western Canada and their behaviour need not here be discussed.

DEVELOPMENT at Steep Rock lake has given rise to renewed interest in the geology of the iron ore deposits in the Lake Superior Region and has implications of no small moment bearing upon methods of exploration in the Precambrian Shield generally. Following upon the Regional Lake Superior meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers in August, 1941, the authors prepared a paper on the Steep Rock deposits, which appeared in the A.I.M.E. publication, Mining Technology, for January, 1943. Between Januar7 and April, 1943, exploration at Steep Rock was continued by means o vertical, Mesabi-type churn-drill holes put down from the ice. This drilling has enlarged the tonnage of ore previously known and has disclosed further facts relating to the origin of the ore. The added evidence, we believe, goes to support the hypothesis that the deposits were formed by a process of replacement due to upward-moving, iron-bearing solutions which came in as igneous after-effects. Accordingly, in presenting the subject to the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, it seems best not to change our first explanation, but to prefix the original paper with an interpretation of the results of the more recent explorations completed after its publication.

The separation of Ni and Co from sulphate medium containing Mn, Mg, Cu and Ca was carried out by solvent extraction. The object of this study was to investigate the synergistic effect using phosphinic acid (Cyanex 272) and carboxylic acid (Versatic 10) and their mixtures in kerosene. The extraction percent of each metal ion was found to increase with increasing pH and extractant concentration. Co was preferentially extracted over Ni under the same extraction conditions. The separation factors of Ni/Co increased with the use of the synergistic systems investigated.

"AngloGold Ashanti Brasil, with assistance from Sherritt International Corporation, has recently commissioned a new autoclave for the pressure oxidation of refractory gold feeds at their Corrego do Sítio operation in Brazil. Design of the new plant, including feed acidulation, pressure oxidation, oxidized solids washing and solution neutralization circuits, was based on the results of test work conducted by Sherritt at their pilot plant in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. This paper describes the results of the pilot plant study as well as highlights of the design exercise.INTRODUCTIONAngloGold Ashanti Brasil (AGA Brasil) has recently commissioned a refractory gold pressure oxidation plant at the site of the original São Bento operation in Brazil. The design of the São Bento pressure oxidation facility was based on Sherritt technology; Sherritt carried out the original process development test work in the mid-1980s, provided a process design package and detailed specifications for critical pressure oxidation equipment and participated in the training of operators and commissioning of the plant. The São Bento plant was operated between 1986 and 2007, when the original ore body was exhausted (Silva et al., 2004). AGA Brasil purchased the facility from Eldorado Gold in 2008, with the intent of refurbishing the plant to process refractory gold concentrates produced from the nearby Córrego do Sítio mining area.Sherritt International Corporation has a long history in the development and application of commercial pressure oxidation and pressure leaching processes. Sherritt’s development of technology for the pressure oxidation of refractory gold ores and concentrates commenced in the 1980s in collaboration with Homestake for application at the McLaughlin project in California. This was followed by several commercial applications in Canada, Papua New Guinea and Brazil (Berezowsky et al., 1991). More than thirty pilot plant campaigns investigating the pressure oxidation of refractory gold ores or concentrates have been conducted by Sherritt since the 1980s, and projects with Sherritt contributions to the process development studies and/or engineering design account for about half of the commercial plants that have operated to date with this type of process (Collins et al., 2011a; 2011b)."
