"Mineable coal seams in the East Kootenay region belong to the Mist Mountain Formation of the Jurassic -Cretaceous Kootenay Group. Three structurally separate coal fields (Crowsnest, Elk Valley and Flathead) are recognized, all of which are characterized by compressional tectonic features such as f aiding and thrust faulting, and by /ate-stage normal faulting. Tectonic history has greatly influenced coal mineability and quality. Coals range in rank from low to highvolatile bituminous, and reactive maceral content ranges from less than 60% to greater than 90%. A wide range of metallurgical and thermal coal qualities is found. Measured reserves (up to 1981) include 1.03 billion metric tonnes metallurgical and 165 million metric tonnes thermal coal. Introduction a) Location -Coal fields of the East Kootenays region occur in the Front Ranges of the Rocky Mountains, within 30 km of the Alberta -British Columbia boundary (Fig. 1). They extend over 175 km north from near the U.S. border, and occupy the regions of the Crowsnest Pass and Elk and Flathead River drainages. The deposits are accessible from Highway 3 (Fig. 1) and various secondary roads. The towns of Fernie, Sparwood, Elkford, Coleman and Blairmore serve the coal industry. East Kootenay coal deposits are contained in three structurally separate coal fields, the Crowsnest, Elk Valley, and Flathead coal fields (Fig. 1). Coal is currently being produced by B.C. Coal (now Westar Mining Ltd.) at Sparwood, by Fording Coal 20 km north of Elkford, by Crows Nest Resources at Line Creek 15 km southeast of Elkford, and by Byron Creek Collieries at Corbin. Westar Mining has also constructed a new mine on the Greenhills Range 8 km northeast of Elkford. Pre-requisite engineering and environmental studies have been carried out on the Elco Mining property, 35 km north of Elkford, and on the Sage Creek coal property near the U.S. border (Fig. 1). b) Coal land tenure -Coal rights in the East Kootenays are either held as freehold land, or are licensed from the provincial government. The former category includes lands acquired under the Railroad Act of 1890. Shortly after this the federal government also obtained 50,000 acres of coal-bearing lands from the Crown Provincial, the so-called Dominion Government Coal Blocks. Major holders of coal rights in the area are Westar Mining and Crows Nest Resources. Large blocks are also held by Fording Coal and related companies, Sage Creek Coal, and Canada Permanent Trust Company as trustee for Elco Mining, and small blocks are held by Byron Creek Collieries and Coleman Collieries. In addition the provincial government holds an area in reserve for possible future use of B.C. Hydro at the extreme north end of the Elk Valley coal field."

INTRODUCTION I WELCOME the opportunity to speak on Programmes in Safety. The invitation to do so shows that those guiding affairs of the Institute in this District realize the practical importance of this subject. My remarks are intended primarily for mines having 100 to 400 employees, approximately. With minor modifications, however, they apply also to larger or smaller operations. Others, I hope, will derive benefit from this paper, for they, too, have a part to play in accident prevention; for example, contractors such as shaft-sinkers; manufacturers of equipment; and consultants and designers of mining, milling, and metallurgical methods. These troubled times stress, as never before, the importance of efficient operations in mining. The days are gone when neglect can be afforded. Safe working conditions and satisfied employees are essential for efficient production at reasonable cost. The mining industry of Ontario long has been keenly aware of the human aspects of this subject, and as a whole it has done much to decrease the frequency and severity of disabling accidents. The number of fatalities per 1,000 employees has been reduced from a high of 5 some two decades ago to an all-time low of 0.89 in 1948; the incidence was slightly higher in 1949, being 1.17 per 1,000. The reduction in non-fatal compensable accidents also has been outstanding, frequency having ?been reduced from over 200 per 1,000 employees some two decades ago to 54 per 1,000 at the producing mines in 1949. These statistics demonstrate progress. Nevertheless, the general picture still leaves much to be desired when viewed from two other angles.

"IntroductionAgrium’s history in fertilizer production and marketing goes back to 1931. Today, Agrium Inc. is a world leader in the production, distribution, and marketing of fertilizers and related products to the agricultural industry. Agrium is the largest North American producer of nitrogen fertilizers, a major producer of phosphate and potash fertilizers, and a world leader in fertilizer wholesale distribution and retail marketing. The mine at Kapuskasing is located some 40 km southwest of Kapuskasing, Ontario (Fig. 1). It has been developed to supply high-quality, low-cost phosphate rock to the company’s Redwater, Alberta facility, where it is an ingredient in ammonium phosphate fertilizer production. The Kapuskasing mine is the only phosphate mine in Canada and will rank as one of the highest-grade phosphate mines in the world (Clark and Duncan, 1999). Apatite is the principal ore mineral mined at the Kapuskasing Phosphate Operations.GeologyThe first record of exploration in the area was from a program executed by Continental Copper Mines in 1955 which evaluated the magnetic anomaly located in the Cargill and Cumming townships for its base metal potential. Intermittent exploration of the base metal potential of this magnetic anomaly continued in the following years, until the phosphate potential of the area was first examined in 1974 by International Minerals Corporation which recognized the presence of a layer of apatite sands overlying the carbonatite host rocks.The local geology consists of a core complex of multi-phased carbonatite rocks which are surrounded by a ring of pyroxenite, and have provided a U-Pb age date of 1907 Ma ± 4 (Sage, 1988). These two rock types are in turn situated within quartz diorite gneisses that form a large portion of the Kapuskasing Structural Zone (Fig. 2). The carbonatite host rock is sub-divided into two sub-types: sovite and rauhaugite. The sovite is a medium- to coarse-grained, white, banded rock in which calcite is the dominant carbonate species and it includes accessory minerals such as phlogopite, magnetite, clinohumite, apatite, olivine, pyrrhotite, and amphibole. Apatite can reach 15% abundance in this rock type (Sage, 1988). In sharp contrast to the sovite, the rauhaugite appears as a massive, fine-grained, dense, beige to tan-coloured rock in which dolomite is the dominant carbonate species. Phosphate values can range to 14% P2O5 in the rauhaugite."

"A 3-dimensional finite element model for stress/stability analysis of rock excavations in underground mines is presented. Developed for use on personal computer under OS/2 operating system, the model employs the 8-node isoparametric brick element and accounts for such loading conditions as in situ stresses and gravity loading of the rock mass. In addition, modelling of backfill in mine stopes as in situ stress-free material is incorporated. Material failure is assessed by Mohr-Coulomb or Hoek-Brown failure criterion. A mine design example is presented to illustrate the potential use of the model as a tool for stope design.IntroductionNumerical modelling of mine structures has become a vital tool for mine design in recent years. The need to maximize ore extraction ratio and to reach deeper mineral deposits underground has led the mining industry to employ numerical methods of analysis to undertake complex ground control studies in order to better understand the ground response to mining excavations and to evaluate the ground support requirements. Thanks to the rapid developments in computer technology, it is now possible to perform very comprehensive analyses including, but not limited to, 3-dimensional, elasto-plastic, or large deformation or time dependent nonlinear analyses on personal computer.During the past ten years or so, many researchers undertook 3-D finite element analyses of rock mechanics problems in mining engineering. The following is only a sample review. For example, Chan'!' used three-dimensional finite elements to study the mechanical response of jointed granite during shaft sinking at the Canadian Underground Research Laboratory. Wang et al.(2) performed 2-D and 3-D finite element analyses of room-and-pillar mining system with flat and rolling coal seams. Thatejatu used three-dimensional finite element method to examine the problem of branching tunnels. Dolezalovaw used three-dimensional finite elements for the analysis of tunnel-face advance with partial excavation as well as full-face excavation in combination with rein for cement of the face by long anchors. Peili (5) used three-dimensional finite elements for the simulation of rock-liner interaction near the tunnel face."

"Introductory and GeneralTHE DRIESSEN CONE bas been used fairly extensively commercially as a classifier. Its use as a concentrator in the upgrading of ores at a fairly high ratio of concentration with concomitant recoveries has been almost negligible. Certain known features about the cone, however, such as its high throughput capacity, cheapness of construction and operation, and simplicity of design have attracted the attention of mill men. An inadequate knowledge of the operating characteristics of the cone when used as a concentrator seems to have been the main reason for its lack of use. It was for this reason that the present investigations§ were undertaken to determine the operating characteristics of the cone and its application to the concentration of uranium ores, with particular emphasis being placed on the concentration of low-grade uranium ores.The investigations were started in December, 1951, and have continued uninterrupted to the present. The initial work was confined chiefly to investigating the operating characteristics of the cone in order to establish the trends that certain variables would exert on the general metallurgy of uranium concentration. Optimum metallurgy was therefore not the prime initial objective."

F OR many years, only one grade of structural steel has been used in volume in Canada. Its characteristics have not been altered appreciably and its long use speaks well for its performance. This standard grade of structural steel may be bought and specified as C.S.A. G40.4 steel or the American equivalent, A.S.T.M. A7. The principal limitations and requirements of this specification are shown in Table I. Within the last five years there has been a growing awareness among the steel producers and steel fabricators that economic forces are at work which make desirable the availability of new and better grades of structural steel. Competition from other materials has increased. The use of concrete bridges and pre-stressed concrete beams is a prime example. New sources of steel from outside the country have become a threat to the Canadian industry and its high cost-price structure. "The selective precipitation of iron as ammonium jarosite is a well-established industrial technology in base metals hydrometallurgy. It is a key technology in minimizing iron tenors which would be disruptive to downstream processing. It also provides a more readily filterable iron solid to better facilitate materials handling. This paper elucidates the fundamentals behind industrial iron precipitation. Then, the details of the successful optimization of an industrial ammonium jarosite circuit are presented.HYDROMETALLURGICAL IRON REMOVAL FUNDAMENTALS Iron is the fourth most abundant element in the Earth’s crust (5% by weight) and is often found in complex ores such as sulphide-bearing formations. Iron represents an issue though during leaching, a technology which is widely used for the treatment of this type of ore: •,Iron has the particularity of forming hydroxides when leached under certain conditions. Iron hydroxides form a viscous gel, which is difficult to filter and traps valuable elements such as silver. •,Iron is solubilized along with other metals and interferes with the subsequent extraction steps. As a result, purification of the pregnant leach solutions is required to achieve economical extraction of base metals. In the 1960s, metallurgists developed iron precipitation processes for solution purification (Habashi, 1999). Nowadays, precipitation of iron bearing species, such as goethite, hematite or jarosite, has become one of the most common methods used in the industry to purify leach liquors. To be suitable, the precipitate has to be readily filterable and thus must not be too fine of particle size. Precipitation can take place in autoclaves at medium to high temperatures, under an oxygen or air overpressure (Tourre, 1984, Fleuriault 2016, Fleuriault Anderson Shuey, 2016))."

Inter formational sliding of bedding planes between two different rock types in Badong formation is an important reason that leads to the instability and fracture of rock mass in this stratum. There are no specific research achievements on bedding planes between two different rock types in Badong formation. In order to study the shear mechanical properties of bedding planes between two different rock types. This paper using the software of particle flow code (PFC) and JRC model to establish several typical structures of different roughness coefficient of surface morphology based on the laboratory tests on silty mudstone and marlite in Badong formation. A great deal of numerical shear tests were carried out by ball production, radius expansion and servo infliction. The research results are as follows: First, shear strength of Badong formation is found to vary between that of silty mudstone and marlite isotropic planes by analyzing shear strength of the homogenous bedding planes and inhomogeneous rock types, we can find that the shearing strength in Badong formation is between silty mudstone and marlite isotropic planes and which is closer to the shearing strength of silty mudstone isotropic planes. Second, the basical friction angle of bedding planes between two different rock types in Badong formation is between silty mudstone and marlite isotropic planes and which is closer to the basical friction angle of silty mudstone between isotropic planes. Third, based on the experimental results, an expression is obtained to describe the relationship of the ratio of shearing strength between bedding planes of two different rock types and isotropic planes in soft rock, the rock combination coefficient, and the roughness coefficient. This study has important significance for further research on the shear mechanical properties of bedding planes between two different rock types.

It has been shown that contacts between host rock and engineered barriers may be critical in the design of deep radioactive waste repositories. Water is expected to reach the interface zone after the re-saturation of the geological massive and its presence may lead to concrete leaching. Such a phenomenon could increase the interface transmissivity and compromise the confinement of radioactive waste. Recent experimental results from Buzzi et al. (2008) have enhanced how concrete leaching can drastically change the mechanical behaviour of such interfaces. Because of the local loss of strength resulting from leaching, shearing resulted in a degradation of the interface asperities. Similarly to rock joints, intact interfaces exhibit a usual contracting-dilating behaviour. On the contrary, depending on the extent of leaching, the degraded interface can display a fully contracting. This paper intends to investigate the influence of concrete leaching on the mechanical behaviour of host rock-concrete interfaces. The leaching process consists in the dissolution of some of the hydrates of the cement paste, leading to a reduction of the strength and Young's modulus. A discrete model has been developed with PFC3D where a simplified interface morphology has been introduced using a saw-tooth description of the asperities.

"A qualitative and quantitative analysis of the new Al-Ca-Mn-Fe phase diagram in the region of the aluminium corner is carried out using both thermodynamic calculations and experimental methods. Using the obtained data, the principal possibility of creating both cast and wrought sparingly alloyed aluminium alloys with calcium, manganese, scandium and zirconium at allowable iron contents of up to 0.4% that do not require solution treatment and quenching is justified. At the selected concentrations, the entire amount of manganese (1%) is practically included in the aluminium matrix, while calcium (~2%) and iron are in the multiphase eutectic, which has a fine structure. The joint introduction of 0.25% Zr and 0.1% Sc into the alloy leads to precipitation hardening due to the formation of the L12-Al3(Zr,Sc) phase during annealing. Based on the experimental data for the model multicomponent Al2CaMnFeZrSc alloy, it is shown that such alloys can combine high mechanical properties and good manufacturability during both casting and metal forming. This is due to the combination of a narrow temperature range of solidification with a fine eutectic structure.INTRODUCTION Hardening in branded aluminium alloys (both cast and wrought) is generally achieved by heat treatment of the T6 type, including quenching and artificial aging (Zolotorevskiy, 2007; Kaufman, 2004; Mondolfo, 1976). Heat treatment significantly increases the cost of the final products. Therefore, industrial companies are interested in developing alloys that can be hardened to the desired level without quenching. To solve this problem, alloys with scandium are the most suitable (Toropova, 1998; RØyset, 2005). This element (usually in an amount of ~0.3%) is one of the most effective hardeners in aluminium alloys, due to the formation of Al3Sc (L12) phase secondary precipitates, the size of which is less than 10 nm (Knipling, 2010; Fuller, 2005). These nanoparticles are formed during the annealing via decomposition of the supersaturated aluminium solid solution (hereinafter referred to as (Al)). This feature allows us to significantly increase the strength of aluminium alloys by simple annealing (at ~300°C), i.e., without heat treatment, including quenching. However, scandium is a very expensive metal, so its use as an additive is severely limited. The most effective method is the introduction of scandium together with zirconium (Lefebvre, 2009; Booth-Morrison, 2012). The optimal combination is the introduction of ~0.1% Sc together with 0.20–0.25% Zr, which, according to (Belov, 2006), gives approximately the same strengthening effect as the introduction of 0.3% Sc."

"A method is described for determining the viability of hard rock orebody extraction by block caving. Using a very limited amount of geotechnical data, the procedure enhances Laubscher’s empirical stability graph method by using the complex structural modelling system (ChaSM) to assess cavability and block cave tonnages.IntroductionIn considering the selection of suitable mining methods, block caving has gained popularity over other extraction systems in recent years (Butcher, 1999). This has been ascribed to the fact that block caving is the lowest cost per ton mining method, with orebodies that were in the past considered unsuitable for caving, now being successfully mined. However, even though all orebodies will cave, a problem exists in the evaluation of economic viability — it is necessary to be able to predict both when the orebody will cave and what will be the sizes of the initial ore fragments (and the associated tonnages) that report to the drawpoints. This problem is compounded by the fact that, during the scoping study phase of a project, only limited geotechnical data may exist on which to base an assessment of whether block caving is viable or not. Empirical and numerical methods of cavability assessment do not account for the full effects of geological discontinuity trace lengths, nor for the stress regime. Those require significant geotechnical data to be available. The result is that uncertainty may exist as to whether block caving is an economic option. This uncertainty is complicated by the fact that limited experience exists with the caving of more competent orebodies.This paper describes a method for assessing cavability, and for predicting the size of initial ore fragments and the tonnages reporting to block cave drawpoints, using only the level of data normally available during a scoping study. Fragment size and tonnages are assessed by identifying potentially unstable blocks and wedges in the undercut back using statistical joint data. The effects of lateral confining stresses are accounted for by comparing the in situ stress orientations with the joint orientations. To evaluate the accuracy of the method, a back analysis exercise was conducted to predict cavability and initial tonnage for a mine in which the actual behaviour is known. The method is then applied to cavability and tonnage predictions for a hard rock orebody."

A process utilizing ozone for the precipitation of cobalt from nickel sulphate liquors containing ammonium sulphate has been developed. Best results were obtained using nickel carbonate to maintain solution pH at 5.0 to 5.5. Work was performed both in column and stirred-tank reactors. Variables studied included neutralizer type and concentration, NH4+ concentration, temperature, Ni++ and Co++ concentration, per cent O3 in the O2 carrier gas, O3 input rate and agitation. The over-all rate of cobalt rejection increased sharply with increasing agitation and ozone concentration in the gas phase, reflecting relatively slow transfer of ozone from the gas to the liquid phase.

This research investigates the generation of an effective carbonaceous material from waste ‘pure water sachets’ and their subsequent utilisation as reductants for the reduction of the Opon Mansi iron ore. Composite pellets of Opon Mansi iron ore and pulverised carbonaceous material generated from waste pure water sachets were heated from room temperature to 1200 °C in a gas fired furnace for seventy minutes. The reduced pellet was analysed chemically for its oxygen and carbon content using a LECO Oxygen/Nitrogen and LECO Carbon/Sulphur analysers, respectively. It was observed that nuggets of metallic iron were readily produced with the carbonaceous materials acting as an effective reductant and source of chemical energy. XRD analysis of waste ‘pure water sachets’ revealed that the polymer was semi-crystalline with peaks that were identical to those of high density polyethylene (HDPE). Gas emission behaviour of the iron ore-PWS pellet was studied in a horizontal tube furnace at 1200 °C using an infrared gas analyser; the results revealed an exhaust gas rich in the reducing gases CO and CH4 along with CO2.

THE property of Howey Gold Mines, Limited is situated at Red Lake, Ontario, one hundred and seventy-five miles east of Winnipeg and eighty miles north of the Canadian National Railway line. The mine has been a continuous producer since April, 1930, and at present is hoisting 1,350 tons of ore per day. The shaft consists of three compartments (see Figure 1, sketch B). Hoisting is done by two skips in balance, one of which is interchangeable with a cage. Sinking had been carried out at three different periods. From the surface to the 550-foot level, the sets had been spaced at seven-foot intervals, from the 550-to the 1,060-foot level at six feet, and from the 1,060-to the 1,500-foot level at five feet. During the five years of operation, the shaft had become so badly worn, due to spill from the tipples and, to a certain extent, from the loading pockets, that re-timbering was considered necessary. It should be explained that no crushing is done underground because of the ad verse effect this would have on the efficiency of the sorting. The grizzly rail clearance above the ore pockets is fourteen inches and consequently the ore hoisted is extremely coarse. More than average spill from the loading pockets and tipples under such conditions is inevitable, and it is debatable whether underground crushing with consequent increased sorting costs would not be justified. The cost of complete re-timbering according to standard practice would have been prohibitive both directly and indirectly: A lengthy shut-down of the shaft, with the consequent disorganization of the staff and workmen, could not be considered. Accordingly, it became necessary to devise some method of repair that could be carried to completion in a very limited period of time. The shaft timber for the first 250 feet was not in need of repair. From the 250-foot to the 1,060-foot level the wall plates, posts, and blocking were in good condition. These had been protected by a one-inch plank lining put in at various periods during the past three years without interfering with hoisting operations. The end plates and dividers, however, could not be protected in this manner because of the lack of skip clearance. It was decided that, if the dividers in this section could be replaced, the shaft would be as satisfactory as if completely re-timbered. Several factors had to be taken into consideration in deciding on a suit-able method of repair. In the first place, the tipple plates had to be re-designed. To complete the job in a reasonable time, not only had work to be done on the tipple, but simultaneously from several points in the shaft itself. Since all power cables, pipe lines, etc., were in the manway compartment of the shaft, this compartment had to be left undisturbed.

Newmont acquired the Phoenix Project through the acquisition of Battle Mountain Gold in 2000. Shortly after the acquisition, Newmont Metallurgical Services (NMS) and Nevada Operations began development work on a process to Pressure Oxidize (PDX) precious metal rich copper concentrates from Phoenix using the Lone Tree PDX facilities at Valmy, Nevada. The high precious metals content of the Phoenix concentrate - Au up to -300 g/t and especially Ag, up to -1700 g/t - led Newmont to the development of a High Temperature PDX process that achieves high cyanide leach recovery of Au and Ag, from the PDX solids, without the requirement for a messy and expensive "lime boil" or sulphate destruction process. Base metals content in Phoenix concentrates range from: 15-25 % for Cu, 1-10 % for Zn and 0-2 % for Pb. Excellent solution extraction of Cu and Zn is achieved while Pb is precipitated in the PDX residue. In addition to achieving high Au and Ag recovery this process produces very clean PDX discharge liquors that require minimum effort to remove contaminant metals and PDX solids that have superior settling and filtration characteristics. All of these factors contribute to lower capital and operating costs for the overall process. This paper describes the laboratory and PDX pilot plant developments for this process.

Mine planning at Cassiar consists of an annual cycle of projection, control, evaluation and revision following completion of annual diamond drilling during the summer months . The inherent difficulty in evaluating fibre grade and distribution, combined with a high-wall phase or push-back mining system, requires continuous modification to designs and schedules based on a cumulative evaluation of equipment performance and prediction versus production. To expedite the planning sequence, a mini-computer system has been introduced which allows emphasis to be placed on optimizing designs, exempting personnel from manual calculations and tabulations.

Erosion corrosion is acceleration in the rate of corrosion attack in metal due to the relative motion of a corrosive fluid and a metal surface [1]. The increased turbulence caused by pitting on the internal surfaces of a tube can result in rapidly increasing erosion rates and eventually a leak [2]. Engineers and scientists in different disciplines have worked for many years on methods of complete protection from flow induced corrosion or partially reducing corrosion of this type, and they have proposed or applied different countermeasures [2]. The accident at the Surry-2 nuclear power plant (USA) and other similar incidents have once again disturbed the scientific-technical community. This has forced the plant operating personnel and the management to undertake wide-ranging measures in order to discover on time, assess, and monitor such cases. In these extreme cases, protective coating and even metallic bulk material coating (the substrate itself) may suffer considerably from mechanically induced damage [2]. At high velocities, the "leaching out" dissolution reaction of particular, for example, steel elements at the solid-liquid interface become the rate determining step. One practical example for the difference between erosion corrosion and flow induced corrosion is the famous steam eruption from a Japanese [3, 4] nuclear power plant cooling system at the pressurized water reactor (PWR), turbine and in the condenser-steam generator connecting pipe. The rupture occurred in the carbon steel pipe connecting the condenser and steam generator. The damage occurred in the easily eroded/corroded carbon steel at a vulnerable location downstream of an orifice plate, In general, when there is significant reduction in pipe thickness through erosion/corrosion, distinctive patterns are visible, but those patterns were not observed in this case, Thus one can speculate that another phenomenon is possibly controlling, Fluid flow within pipes reduces the pipe thickness leading to an eventual rupture, The thickness reduction mechanism is erosion/corrosion, One example is "cavitations corrosion", Erosion and corrosion occur at the same time, and it is difficult to determine which one is dominant, Therefore, the term, "erosion/corrosion," is used [5]. In the atomic energy field, the terms "Flow Accelerated Corrosion" and "Flow Induced Corrosion" are also used. It is the purpose here to show that during flow induced corrosion a different mechanism may possibly be operating and in some cases it can be different from the well known erosion corrosion. "This paper discusses the experience of Noranda Mines Limited, Matagami Division, with the vertical crater retreat (VCR) method in the mining of narrow-vein stopes. Although limited to only one stope, the viability of this method at the Radiore No.2 Mine has proven that further use of VCR in narrow-vein mining will be made.IntroductionThe Radiore No.2 property is located east of the Bell River in the southeast quadrant of Isle-Dieu Township, approximately 4.5 km east of the town of Matagami. The new James Bay Highway is 2.5 km north of the property and access to the mine is by a 2.5-km logging road.The property was staked by Radiore Uranium Mines in March 1961 and the sulphide body was first indicated by an E.M. survey. Diamond drilling commenced in the fall of 1961 and was completed by the end of 1962. As per an agreement in 1970, the claims were sold and assigned to Orchan Mines Limited. Subsequently, the property was transferred to Bell Allard Mines Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Orchan Mines. Early in 1979, Noranda Mines Limited acquired the property and it is now part of Noranda's Matagami Division.Geology and MineralizationThe deposit is in a band of volcanic rocks north of the Bell River complex. The lens of massive sulphides dips almost vertically and strikes almost east-west. The north contact is essentially sharp against andesite material; the south contact is less well defined, as the massive sulphides tend to grade into more disseminated material.The orebody varies from 5 to 20 feet in width, by 350 feet long and 200 feet in height. The overburden is composed of sand, gravel and clay, varying from 0 to 26 feet in depth. The ore reserves were 153,340 tons grading 1.97% copper and 1.01% zinc including 10% of dilution at zero grade."

ONE of the problems encountered in any mine is the effect of increasing pressure manifested by increasing depth. Although the depth at which excessive pressure assumes serious proportion, and the manner in which it appears in underground workings, are influenced by a variety of factors, nevertheless the difficulty is present in all mines and its gravity increases with increasing depth. In the Kirkland Lake camp, as far back as seven years ago, mining had proceeded to depths sufficient to result in the formation of pressure great enough to cause violent disruption of masses of rock. It is proposed in this paper to deal with the effect of pressure caused by mining as observed at Lake Shore Mines, and to describe some of the methods which have been adopted to counteract it. There are many contributing factors in a study of the problem, and results vary widely in individual mines and in different localities. One feature common to all, however, is that there is ground subsidence, evidenced either by a gradual settling accompanied by crushing and shearing of the ore and wall-rocks, or the disruption of the ground surrounding the periphery of an excavation may take place suddenly, attended by more or less violent shattering of the rocks. Such violent failure of a mass of rock has been designated by the term rock-burst. The history of rock-bursts extends over a great number of years. They have occurred in some form or other in practically ali places where mining operations, at all but very shallow depths, have been carried out. Since the theoretical aspects of the subject have been dealt 'with at great length by capable and experienced writers (1), the present paper will give only a brief résumé of the theories propounded by those engaged in deep mining operations in various parts of the world.

Between 1993 and 2003, a series of AG and SAG mill pilot plant trials were conducted using Hardinge Ical pilot plant scale SAG mills on numerous ore samples and ranging across a wide variety of operating conditions. The data from these tests were used to evaluate the design of SAG and AG mill circuits for over a dozen projects, of which about half were eventually constructed and commissioned. The data were also used in the development of SAG mill modelling, scale-up and simulation procedures by several consultants who had access to part of the data set. Recently, we have had the opportunity to bring this data together and further analyse the consolidated dataset. This paper reports on the outcomes of this analysis that has identified the impacts of different AG/SAG circuit flowsheets and operating conditions on energy efficiency and operating cost.
