Geological mapping in various parts of Australia is revealing a number of regional associations of mineralizations with particular persistent stratigraphic horizons. Such associations have been found in the Broken Hill district of New South Wales, in the Nairne district of South Australia, in the Mount Isa district of Queensland, and in the Cloncurry district of Queensland. The question has arisen as to whether such mineralizations are of sedimentary origin, syngenetic with the enclosing formation, or whether they are of epigenetic origin, and reflect the selective hydrothermal mineralization of favourable beds on a regional scale.The purpose of this investigation is to test the use of sulphur-selenium ratios as an objective method of distinguishing between suphide deposits or sedimentary or supergene origin, and sulphide deposits of hydrothermal origin, with particular application to the districts mentioned. At the same time much data has been accumulated as to the selenium content of Australian sulphide ores. The possible use of sulphur-selenium ratios for this purpose was first demonstrated by Goldschmidt and his coworkers (1933; 1935), and later by Carstens (1941). Goldschmidt and Strock (1935) found that pyrite of sedimentary origin had a sulphur : selenium ratio of the order of 200,000 or more, whereas pyrite of hydrothermal origin had a sulphur: selenium ratio of 10,000 to 20,000. Carstensfound that sedimentary pyrite deposits in Norway contained less than 1 g. Se per ton, whereas hydrothermal pyrite deposits contained 20 to 30 g. per ton.

Major operating aspects of the Mary Kathleen Uranium Ltd. treatment plant are discussed with partkular reference to those which are peculiar to this operation.Problems associated with the production of a penalty free uranium oxide product are examined and the methods developed to overcome them are described in detail.INTRODUCTIONMary K,athleen Uranium Ltd. is the largest of the Australian uranium producers. The flow-sheet is based on fine grinding, standard sulphuric acid leach, ion exchange concentration, and magnesia precipitation of the final product, with certain modifications introduced as the result of pilot plant investigations at the South Australian Department of Mines Research Laboratories in Adelaide.The plant commenced operations in June, 1958, attained design tonnlige of 1,120 tons per day in September of that year and has since operated continuously with a throughput in excess of 1,000 tons per day. Pilot plant recommendations generally have been followed, and predicted results have been attained. The only exception has been the silica and rare earth content of the product produced during the early months of operation. Considerable modification of the early resin regeneration techniques resulted in the reduction of the silica content of the product to within specification limits. Research work in the ion exchange section has also resulted in the reduction of the rare earth content of the product to below specification levels. All product now being produced is completely within the agreed specification limits of impurities.

During the past Two years in reef gold mining, "indicators" have received great attention at the hands at the Victorian gold seekers. Many years ago, what was caned the" indicator lode," was struck in Ballarat East, on the course of which extremely rich deposits of gold were discovered but as to its being a .qeneral experience in reefs or leaders no one ever dreamed. Now, however, we find that these "indicators" are frequently to be met with, though they differ very much in different localities, making it, therefore, a difficult matter for other than a careful minel' to follow them. The necessity of following "indicators" for the purpose of developing gold is now recognized, and the policy of following them up has been attended with much success in this field. In the case of Messrs Shaw and Sons, at Wedderburn, those gentlemen began to work on an "indicator" here five years ago, and immediately thereafter more by accident than anything else they being at that time inexperienced as regards "indicators " came upon gold bearing quartz, which continued payable so long as the" indicator" aud the stone were in conjunction with each other, but as soon as they parted company the stone ceasedto be of any value then, by following the" indicator," as the latter intersected fresh bodies of stone they proved again more or less payable, until a fortnight or so ago the Messrs. Shaw turned out 4 tons of stone, which yielded £1,825, with also profitable workingup to the present moment. Where they are now working is a mile north of their original find thus proving that "indicators" travel considerable distances and have something to do with the gold deposits found in reefs. On the direct course of Shaw's "indicator," as high as hundreds of ozs to the ton was obtained from the stone but, just a few inches from either side in the same" leader," not a colour could be got. Whatever the cause-whether by electricity or some unknown force in nature-the gold is found on the course of these" indicators" and nowhere else, and-as each of the Victorian Government Geologists admit-their value to the gold-seeker as a means of leading to' gold cannot be over-estimated.

ZINIFEX Century Mine is a zinc, lead and silver concentrate producer. Flotation is the primary method of minerals separation in this circuit. The flotation circuit is quite large with 79 flotation cells. The levels in each of these interconnected cells are controlled at more than 45 level control stations. Due to the multivariable interaction throughout the circuit, good level control was found to be difficult to achieve by just using normal Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) control. As a first step in advanced process control, the FloatStar Level Stabiliser, a multivariable controller developed specifically for flotation circuits, has been commissioned at Century mine to solve the level control problems. The first section of this paper therefore discusses and shows the results and improvements obtained by using the FloatStar level stabiliser. The results and benefits of the FloatStar Flow Optimiser are discussed in the second section of this paper.

The uptake of gold by activated carbon from acid chloride solutions involves the reduction of gold(IIl) to metallic gold. Deposition occurs only on the surface of the carbon at localized active sites at first, and subsequently at less active areas. The rate of uptake depends on the surface area of activated carbon, which confirms results from a recently published study (de Siegel and Soto, 1984). Increased rates of uptake were observed at higher temperatures and lower chloride concentrations due to the decreased stability of AuCI4-, the major gold(IIl) species present. Recoveries of gold approached 100 per cent for a contact time of 60 minutes at 20°C in a well stirred solution initially 5 ppm in gold(III) and containing 0.5 per cent w/v coconut-shell carbon. The presence of 0.25 Mnitric acid or 100 ppm iron(IIl) had no detectable effect on either rate or efficiency of gold uptake.

Roxgold was a small exploration company when it discovered the Zone 55 orebody at the Yaramoko project in Burkina Faso in 2010. Since this time, it has actively progressed the project with the completion of a preliminary economic assessment in 2013, a feasibility study in early 2014 and obtained full permitting for construction in January 2015. With no other underground gold mine in Burkina Faso, developing a modern and productive modern gold mine in West Africa was considered a significant challenge as Roxgold moved from explorer to producer.To facilitate this development, Roxgold engaged an international underground mining contractor to partner this development. This has enabled Roxgold to successfully develop the mine over a relatively short time frame with construction commencing in April 2015, first gold being poured in May 2016 and commercial production being achieved in October 2016.This paper discusses key elements of the project development and highlights some of the challenges faced with operating in a remote poorly developed area with a limited mining culture. Furthermore, the authors highlight the key technical and operational aspects that make the Yaramoko project a very successful development project.CITATION:Cope, B and Churi, Y, 2017. There are several long-standing rules of thumb that are often quoted in mine ventilation studies. They include airway ‘carrying velocities’ and the critical upcast air velocity range that must be avoided to prevent a water blanket forming. Quoting these rules of thumb may lend an air of legitimacy to a ventilation design, and allow the design engineer to avoid having to study a problem from first principles. But how valid are these shortcuts in today’s rapidly changing world? This paper summarises research into the genesis of several commonly quoted rules of thumb. It finds that they were very specific to the local conditions, practices and economics at the time they were developed. It also presents examples where applying these rules of thumb outside of their original context can lead to unexpected and erroneous results.CITATION:Derrington, A S, 2017. Two events during the past decade have combined to effectively alter the role of the geologist working in Papua New Guinea. The gold boom of the 1980s resulted in a substantial increase in the general awareness at village level of mining companies, gold and landowner issues, and as a consequence of the Bougainville tragedy, landowners are also very much aware of the potential problems of a mining operation in their area. Landowners know they have the power to remove a company from a project area, and government has shown itself to be virtually powerless and unable to help the company effectively. During a considerable proportion of a project's development time, the project geologist is viewed in the eyes of the local community as the 'company'. Good landowner relationships are nurtured over a reasonable time period and the input of the geologist is significant in determining the eventual fate of company-landowner relationships. The initial impressions of the company, gathered by the local community, will have a far reaching impact on the nature and direction of their future exchanges with the company.

A comparatively new and very promIsmg field for applying cemented tungsten-carbides is in the mining and quarrying industries. The economic advantages of this unique engineering material over the conventional hollow drill steel, or steel detachable bits, have proven so great that the use of "hard metals" promises, in some instances, to revolutionise the drilling of all manner of minerals. Early in the war years the Germans realised the tremendous advantages cemented carbides offered for holing hard rocks, and they proceeded to develop detachable percussion bits to do this work, at the same time evolving fast, comparatively light-hitting driliing machines, especially designed to suit the mechanical properties of the carbide.Here in Australia also, it has appeared that the detachable percussion bit offers the greatest economic benefits to consumers, although the author is well aware that carbide-tipped drill rods have, and may continue to work out satisfactorily in certain mines and quarries.Most drilling equipment at present installed in Australia may be described as being of the heavy hard-hitting variety, so that the designer of an efficient percussion bit has to take special precautions to overcome the problem of fatigue, and to ensure that the inserts are securely mounted in the body with the minimum of internal stress in the carbide.

In iron ore sintering, packing the granules onto the sintering strand to form a porous bed with optimum permeability is a complex dynamic process. The packed bed voidage is the key factor determining the flame front speed and the final sinter productivity and quality. Previous studies have found that granules are soft quasi-particles with a typical structure of nuclei with an adhering fines layer. The deformation of the adhering layer greatly affects the bed voidage during packing, which is related to the strength of the adhering layer and the force exerted on the granules. In this study, tablets simulating the particle size distribution in the adhering layer of granules were made for four single ore blends. Both the tensile strength and shear strength properties of these tablets were investigated as a function of water content by the uniaxial compression test and direct shear test respectively. The results of compression tests show that the adhering layer becomes weaker and more compliant with the increase of moisture. The most porous ore has a more rigid adhering layer than the other three tested iron ores at any given moisture content. In direct shear tests, the internal friction angle of the adhering layer ranged from 31° to 37° and varied little with the moisture content or ore type. The cohesion constant is around 1 kPa and is quite small compared to the stress applied to the granules during packing. Combined with the results of granulation and packing experiments, the influence of the adhering fines layer deformation on the degree of voidage loss is specifically discussed.CITATION:Zhou, M, Zhou, H and Honeyands, T, 2017. Cemented rock fill (CRF) is often used to support open stope voids. This allows for the full recovery of ore while achieving global mine stability. In such cases, the exposed CRF masses require adequate compressive strength and stiffness to resist the forces and limit the displacement associated with movements in the rock mass surrounding the excavations. The CRF material preparation often involves the use of large particles, either from crushed rock or development mining waste. This means that conventional laboratory samples cannot be readily used to determine the laboratory strength. Consequently, a research project was undertaken to determine the influence of sample size on uniaxial compressive strength. This paper presents the results from CRF samples that were prepared using the same mix design and then cast into moulds with diameters of 150, 240, 300 and 400 mm. The laboratory testing also allowed a better understanding of the effect of particle size distribution upon the overall strength of a rock fill mass. Geotechnical input is interwoven into the mining process at George Fisher South Mine from the planning and design of working areas to the closure of worked out areas and maintenance of life of mine and long term excavations. The methodology used consists of a mixture of application of established theoretical principles and guidelines derived from successful historical experience. In the development stage, including long term infrastructure excavations, the process takes into account the expected life of the excavation, usage and expected stress changes during its life span. On the stoping stage, the design process takes into account the local rock mass conditions, geological structure setting and previous experience in a particular orebody. Due to the high variation in age of currently used excavations, a rolling monitoring and risk assessment process for long term and life of mine excavations and infrastructure is maintained. This paper has as an output the process that must be followed to ensure an excavation on the highly dynamic mining environment at George Fisher South Mine is blasted and maintained in compliance with applicably commonly accepted safety and industry requirements.

Planning for the Macraes Extension project highlighted the need for additional tailings storage availability. The possible solution of developing new tailings impoundments in Northern Gully, in tum, led to concerns being expressed by the regUlatory authority over the assimilative capacity of Deepdell Creek. Philosophical differences over the appropriateness of applying a seepage model used to set standards in consents for the original project resulted in the company re-evaluating the whole monitoring system associated with tailings disposal and seepage control. Re-evaluation indicated problems arising from the existing in-stream water quality monitoring in respect of protection of the aquatic ecological system and verifiability of results. A new monitoring system was designed relocating the compliance monitoring point out of the stream and into the gully containing the tailings impoundments giving greater certainty of monitoring results to all parties and providing improved protection for the aquatic ecology of Deepdell Creek.

Analysis of Electrostatic Separation for Rutile Cleaning Duty Using a Plate Electrode Assisted High Tension Roll Separator A plate assisted electrostatic high tension roll separator has been used for the removal of impurity mineral grains from a rutile rich product stream. A laboratory study and a subsequent production study explored the effect of machine conditions with a view to the optimisation of the separation performance of the separator. The performance requirement was that the TiO2 grade in the non-conductor stream was to be less than ten per cent whilst at the same time the ZrO2 grade in the conductor stream had to be less than 0.5 per cent at mass recoveries of greater than 90 per cent to the conductor stream and less than 5 per cent to the non-conductor stream. Mineralogy data was utilized to determine the feasibility of achieving the production targets with the feed under study. Since the feed stream mineralogy was dominated by rutile, leucoxene and zircon, it was possible to use an approximation to the actual mineral assemblage as well as the raw X-ray fluorescence data to understand the separation duty of the Carrara machine. Since there were four conflicting criteria used for the performance requirement, an index was devised that incorporated all the requirements simultaneously. This new index was the sum of the squares of the difference between the achieved and desired values, weighted with respect to the variance of each variable. If the desired value for a particular criterion had been met its contribution to the sum was set to zero, no matter how well the criterion had been met. For the production machine the strict requirements were almost achieved. As expected, the achievement of the target performance was dependent of the feed conditions at the time of measurement. This paper reports the results of this study.

Sinter has been used as part of the metallic charge in large-scale blast furnaces for many years with the well-known benefits in terms of productivity and fuel consumption. However, because of the high investment in a conventional sinter plant, small blast furnaces and the associated integrated mini steel plants have not taken the advantages of using sinter. Recently KTS Korf Tecnologia Siderurgica, a division of Mannesmann Demag Ltda in Brazil, has developed a mini sinter plant for which the investment is compatible with small blast furnaces. Consequently, it is of great interest to evaluate the economical impact of using sinter in such small-scale integrated steel plants. In order to compare two alternatives, ie 100 per cent ore and 70 per cent sinter in the blast furnace burden, mass and heat balances for the entire operation from sinter plant through the blast furnace and EOF-based melting shop, were performed to evaluate the final production cost of the liquid steel. It was found that, depending on the sinter feed price, substantial savings can be obtained with the use of sinter.

This paper deals with the application of table flotation to two unusual mineral dressing problems. Both problems involved the removal of interfering minerals at sizes too coarse to normal froth flotation.The first problem was the removal of arsenical minerals from Broken Hill gravity concentrates without further size reduction. Table flotation without grinding of the original concentrates gave almost complete rejection of the arsenic from the concentrates. A typical test result was a reduction of arsenic in jig concentrate from 0.75% arsenic to 0.007% arsenic.The second problem was to develop a method to produce a high grade calcium carbonate concentrate from coastal dune sands containing about 10% silica and about 80% calcium carbonate. The sands were about 30 mesh British Standard Screen (B.S.S.), and for economic and other reasons it was stipulated that the separation be made without grinding. Again, table flotation gave excellent results. A concentrate was produced containing 99.62% acid soluble material, representing a recovery of 98.69% of the calcium carbonate in the feed with a rejection of 96.44% of the silica.The investigations' were carried out at the Kalgoorlie Metallurgical Laboratory, under the Department of Mines...

This paper gives a general description of mining practice at The Zinc Corporation Ltd., Broken Hill, New South Wales.The basic mining methods are those which have been common in Broken Hill for many years and have been well described in previous Proceedings.
