The height of fracturing (HoF) measures the propagation distance of continuous fracturing from the mining horizon and is also termed the height of cracking (Hebblewhite, 2020; Khanal et al, 2019) or hydrologically the height of groundwater drainage (Tammetta, 2013). In longwall practice, HoF is an important predictive indicator for assessing the dewatering effect of panel extraction on the shallow aquifer and surface flows. The HoF determination is basically dependent on field measurement works, typically using surface extensometer, borehole televiewer imaging, piezometer monitoring, packer testing, borehole breakout logging, and isotopic tracer monitoring (Brown and Walsh, 2022; Corbett, 2022; Hebblewhite, 2020; Holla and Armstrong, 1986; Mills and O’Grady, 1998; Walsh et al, 2022a, 2022b). These methods or tools have been widely applied to observe rock fracturing and groundwater responses to longwalls at Australian coalmines, for example, Dendrobium Mine (Brown and Walsh, 2022; Walsh et al, 2022b), Appin Mine (Walsh et al, 2022a), and Springvale Mine (Corbett, 2022). In Chinese mines, borehole televiewer imaging and packer testing are more frequently used due to convenient instrumentation, quick testing, and not requiring long-term maintenance of the instrumentation boreholes. The HoF determination also involves further raw data interpretations, for which specialist software for data extraction and quantitative criteria for bounding the fracture transition and termination are necessary. By combining the measured fracture distribution and longwall parameters regarding panel geometry and geological settings, several HoF models have been developed for conceptualising the understanding of strata depressurisation and providing mine engineers fast calculation tools for HoF prediction. The Mackie model considered the height of fracturing as the upper bound of fractured zone and revealed that within the fractured zone there are highly connected fractures and accordingly porosity enhancement and groundwater depressurisation, where the fracture network can be less transmissive from the mining horizon up (Hebblewhite, 2020). The fractured zone shares similar fracturing regime but different heights in varying models: HoF is 30 to 58 times of the mining height (t) based on Australian, Soviet and UK experience (Kendorski, 1993, 2006), and 21 to 33 t according to the field measurements in NSW Central Coast, Australia (Galvin, 2016). Some Australian longwall mines adopt Ditton model (Ditton and Merrick, 2014) (Equations 1.1 and 1.2 in Table 1) sourcing from NSW coalfield experience for HoF prediction, while Liu model (Liu, 1981) (Equations 2.1 to 2.4 in Table 1) developed from 27 coalmines in China is frequently used by Chinese coalmines.

The Nicolsons Find gold project is located 35 km southwest of Halls Creek in the east Kimberley. It was discovered in the late 1980s by John Nicolson and Stuart Skoglund, when high grade gold mineralisation within outcropping gossanous quartz reefs was found. The area has produced a modest 28 150 ounces of gold over two brief mining periods in 1996 and 2002 - 2003. Indicated and inferred resources as of September 2011 stand at 1 384 000 t at 5.58 g/t Au for 248 500 ounces of gold.The project is situated within the Halls Creek Orogen. Principal host units are metasediments and volcaniclastic sediments of the Koongie Park Formation. Minor mafic units are also recognised. Immediately east of these units, emplacement of the loadstone granite is believed to have provided the structural setting for the later gold mineralising event.Mineralisation is hosted within a broad, brittle-ductile arcuate shear zone about the western contact of the Loadstone granite. In the Nicolsons Find area, the shear zone strikes north-northeast and within the shear zone, gold is hosted in a series of narrow, quartz rich veins up to 200 m in strike length, plunging moderately to the north-northeast. To date, mineralisation has been drilled to a depth of 360 m below the surface. The veins are stepped or en-echelon in nature with low gold values towards the quartz vein limits where compression is inferred and higher grades present in the dilational body of the quartz veins. Gold is fine grained and can be present with or without associated sulfides. Sulfides are generally minor and consist mainly of arsenopyrite with traces of chalcopyrite, pyrite and sphalerite. Where present, sulfides are generally indicative of higher gold values.CITATION:Csar, M, 2012. "The mine geologist’s role in classifying ore from waste during grade control represents a critical link in the mining value chain. Any improvement in the ore/waste selection success rate (thus reduction in misclassification) which can be delivered by the mine geologist represents a value proposition. Improvement achieved without additional operating cost (for example extra drilling and sampling) will directly and immediately add value to the mining operation and therefore clearly must be pursued. Such improvement may be leveraged from existing resource drilling data which are typically less numerous but better quality than the grade control data. They are usually excluded from grade control estimates (termed the ‘base case’ approach here) because of the differences in quality.Various specialised geostatistical tools are available to account for differences in precision and accuracy between data sources during spatial estimation. This paper uses a conditional simulation (CS) case study to assess the benefit of integrating resource data into grade control estimates through ordinary kriging (OK) of pooled data sets, cokriging (CK), and ordinary kriging with variance of measurement error (OKVME) when the grade control data are:unbiased but increasingly imprecisebiased and increasingly imprecise. The premise assumed is that the resource data are unbiased and precise.The paper demonstrates that, if appropriately handled, resource data may be used to improve grade control estimates and thus improve ore/waste selection success without additional operating cost. Where grade control data are imprecise but unbiased it is recommended to integrate resource data using OKVME. This re-appropriates kriging weights from less precise to more precise data locations and improves the grade control estimation precision compared to the base case; it consequently provides an improvement in the grade control selection success rate. If grade control data are associated with significant bias, integration through CK is recommended as the biased data are zero sum weighted. CK consequently provides an unbiased estimate with some improvement in estimation precision compared to the base case and consequently improvement in the ore/waste selection success rate.CITATION:Cornah, A J, 2014. Examination of the geology and support performance at two site leads to development of an under tanding of the influence of caving on powered support rating. The two site represent the current extremes in support rating, i.e. 6/260 tonne supports operating in the Hirst seam at Solsgirth Colliery, Scotland, and 4/900 tonne supports operating in the Bulli seam, West Cliff Colliery, Australia.A conceptual model considers the coal ahead of the face, the powered support, and the caved waste to be three yielding foundations which interact to control the subsidence of the roof strata.The caving mechanisms identified for the strata of the Hirst and Bulli seams, are different. These mechanisms being related to rock properties - the palaegeography and depositional conditions at each site-produce caved wastes with different yield characteristics.An analysis of the results obtained for convergence and support reaction during production cycles at both sites shows the manner in which support reaction is developed, indicating the importance of higher setting load densities in the Bulli seam.Evaluation of the work done on the subsiding roof strata during typical production cycles by two of the yielding foundations the powered support and the caved waste immediately behind the powered support - further demonstrates the influence of caving mechanisms on support rating.

The physical properties of an orebody require determination for virtually all mining projects, new and existing. The extent and regularity of such determinations being subject to the size and homogeneity of the orebody. Such properties have an impact at the design stage of new plants, with respect to equipment specification, and thus effects capital costs; and also impacts on the operating costs of new and existing plants, with respect to power consumption, production levels and part replacements. All of these can severely alter the bottom line and can be the determining factor in the economic viability of many projects.This paper examines some of the most common properties that are measured, the procedures utilised in determining these properties, and their variability under conditions of reproducibility, and to a lesser extent repeatability.

Resource estimation and selective mining of structurally complex, high nugget orebodies presents a major challenge to the Mine Geologist. At the Golden Pig BIF-hosted gold deposit in Western Australia, an estimation method has been developed that replaces an assay-based resource estimate with one based on mineralisation intensity. Subjective coding of the mineralisation intensity has a more robust connection to local grade than drillhole assays. Indicator variograms of the five mineralisation codes are well structured with anisotropy directions similar to observed structural controls. The proportion of each mineralisation code is estimated and a weighted average of the average grade of each code calculated for a block. Initial validation has shown that the model is a good predictor of the mineralisation intensity, and the application of appropriate local average grade for each mineralisation code gives a reliable block grade estimate.

A regional scale prospectivity model was developed for Papua New Guinea (PNG) to identify areas of porphyry Cu-Au mineralisation. Weights of evidence modeling techniques were used to determine spatial correlations between porphyry Cu-Au mines and predictive maps created from available spatial data. These predictive maps were then combined into a final prospectivity map. Despite limited regional scale data the model has successfully identified areas of known porphyry mineralisation as prospective and has also identified areas where new mineralised systems may be discovered with further exploration. Passive systems for the treatment of acid mine drainage (AMD) are typically more economic in the long term than active systems. Various flow charts for treatment selection have been prepared by scientists in the USA, however, they have typically not included a variable important at New Zealand AMD sites on the West Coast: topography and available land area. Very steep topography, dense and often protected vegetation (and animals such as snails), and a high-rainfall climate result in AMD with very high flow rates in locations with very limited space for remediation. Flow charts specific to New Zealand have been prepared which accommodate topography and available land area. Parameters necessary to use the flow charts are iron and aluminium concentrations, pH, ferrous to ferric iron ratio, dissolved oxygen concentration, topography and available land area. Prior to full scale construction, is it recommended that flow rates be quantified, small-scale trials be conducted, and cost, effectiveness, limitations, and risk of failure be reviewed for various options. One full-scale remediation system has been installed in New Zealand based on this methodology and another is planned. The performance of these systems, as well as future systems to be installed, will be used to validate these treatment system flow charts.

This paper summarises research into the study of the control of flotation processes based on froth images. A review of the froth flotation operation background and the relevance and role of the froth phase are presented. The use of numerical image analysis techniques for the extraction of significant patterns from industrial flotation froths is discussed. First, the froth was analysed by the use of the multivariate image analysis (MIA) method to extract the spectral variation contained in a RBG image. The partial least squares (PLS) method was applied to develop an empirical model for the prediction of froth grade. The results of this application are illustrated using an industrial case study. Second, the froth was also analysed by grey-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) and wavelet transform analysis (WTA) to extract features related more to morphological aspects. Since there is useful information hidden in froth texture, these methods are used as texture descriptor to classify different types of froths. They also provide qualitative information on the changes in the visual appearance of the froth. The pros and the cons of those methods are highlighted. Third, a control strategy based on a froth structure indicator was developed and implemented on an industrial zinc flotation circuit. The feedback controller uses the reagent flow-rate in order to maintain the froth structure at its set point. Process improvements obtained from the implemented control strategy are highlighted. Finally, the feasibility of implementing a hybrid control strategy consisting in a froth structure supervision controller based on the froth concentrate grade estimated by MIA and recovery inferred by image analysis is discussed.

New and more cost-effective methods of haulage and hoisting will be needed to develop the underground mines of the future. A review of the development of technology since the 1950s shows that once mechanised equipment became available it took 25 years for appropriate mining methods to be developed and the equipment made reliable, then a further 25 years to reach todayÆs level of automation and reliability. Suggestions are made about possible areas for ongoing research with the observation that there is little research worldwide into disruptive technologies. A call is made for better organisation and presentation of the opportunities and potential benefits of new underground mining technologies.

The Barrick Osborne concentrator has gone through a number of upgrades since commissioning and steadily increased production from the original 119 t/h design capacity to 265 t/h milling throughput in 2008. This was achieved incrementally over several years, by maximising operating efficiencies, in order to minimise capital expenditure, and take advantages of economies of scale; but more importantly it was reached with no measurable loss of recovery. Osborne currently processes a blend of under- ground with open pit material from the nearby Trekelano deposit. Following primary/secondary crushing, the material is processed through a rod/ball mill grinding circuit ahead of rougher/scavenger flotation that produces a copper concentrate.Osborne was seeking a further increase in plant throughput of the order of 15 per cent, but at more sustainable levels of secondary crusher plant utilisation. In early 2008, Osborne contracted Metso Minerals Process Technology Asia-Pacific and South America (MMPT) to review the entire process from run-of-mine feed to final copper concentrate. This review would be done concurrently, with surveys of both the crushing/ grinding and flotation circuits being performed at the same time. The outcome would be a steady-state model of the complete flow sheet allowing the crushing/grinding model to interact with the flotation circuit model such that overall process optimisation was possible. Two key outcomes for the operation are exploration of the operating limits of the currently installed plant, and projection of the logical next stage of potential capital plant expansions. This paper covers Part B or the flotation component of the project. A separate paper discussing Part A or crushing and grinding is also being presented at this conference. Surveys of the Osborne flotation circuit were performed along with a comprehensive review of the cell characteristics including measurements of the gas and froth phases of individual flotation cells. These data resulted in a size-by-size floatability component model of the complete circuit. This circuit model was then used to perform steady-state simulat- ions to evaluate options to improve both overall circuit and individual cell performance. The grinding circuit model discussed in a separate paper or Part A of this project was then used interactively with the flotation circuit model to recommend the best operating regime to maximise overall efficiency. For example, the balance between increased crushing and grinding costs versus higher copper recovery and final concentrate grade. Due to changes in market conditions in the fourth quarter of 2008, the focus was shifted to prioritising operational changes rather than capital expansion modifications, in order to improve circuit performance.

The new South Australian Mining Act be came operative in July, 1972. It provides appropriate updated legislation covering pro- specting, exploration and development of mining properties. Anomalies inherent in earlier legislation which provided for the private ownership of minerals in certain areas have been overcome by the vesting of the property in. all minerals in the Crown. Appropriate transition- al and long term provisions protect the right of individuals thereby divested of their former property in minerals. In the matter of pro- specting for and quarrying of extractive minerals, the rights of landowners have been formally recognized, and the concept of rehab- ilitation of quarried areas has been introduced utilizing money provided from a royalty fund especially established for this purpose. Con- temporary company exploration practice is catered for under a new exploration tenement and at the same time the legislation makes provision for the interests of individual pro- spectors. Special provisions have been enacted to cope with the rapidly developing opal mining industry. A feature of the new Act is the introduction of legislation which recognizes enlightened contemporary thinking on the matter of environmental considerations. Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) fines from Western Australia is a hematite and limonite mix characterised by high crystal water content. Due to its higher supply capacity and lower prices, the Wuhan Iron and Steel Corporation (Group) intended to use more FMG fines in the sinter mix. It is understood that sinter quality is closely related to its microstructure featured by the hardness and brittleness of different mineral phases, the content of micro pores, and trans-cracks. In order to maintain sinter qualities such as tumble index, reducibility and so on at higher FMG fines blend ratios, a research project was initiated to study the effects of the FMG fines blending ratio on sinter microstructure. Research results showed that at higher FMG fines ratios, the hardness of hematite and magnetite were both decreased while the hardness of calcium ferrite showed a tendency to decrease. The number of cracks that were generated during Vickers hardness measurement in various mineral phases decreased, but their length was shortened, and the variation of crack lengths increased. The contents of hematite and magnetite were also reduced and the reduction of magnetite was clearer. Also the content of calcium ferrite and pores rose and the magnitude of the increase of pores was greater. Among all the mineral phases in sinter cakes, the Vickers hardness of hematite was highest within the range of 879 N/mm2 ~ 942 N/mm2, and therefore the decrease of its content in sinter and the enhancement of its brittleness, ie the number of cracks increased, were harmful to sinter strength. The disposal of tailings has become a greater issue due to the changing economics of mineral extraction. The processing of lower grade deposits and tougher environmental regulations has led to the selection process for tailings disposal options becoming more complicated. Current selection methods are too time consuming or too easily manipulated for inexperienced users to use successfully. This paper examines a different method for the initial selection of a tailings disposal system, using a numerical system that was introduced into the mining method selection field. The numerical method system was compiled by reviewing previous work done on the positive and negative aspects of the tailings disposal methods used by the coal and metallurgical mining industries. Assessing the common trends and design aspects of each of the methods was undertaken and a ranking was designed to explain how well suited the tailings disposal methods are to a situation. The tool successfully analysed sites using common data to indicate methods for disposal that would have provided minimal technical problems, low environmental risk and been practically possible. The tool also proved successful in identifying critical areas that would need further investigation. This new system was tested on some disaster case studies from around the world in order to show that it could have successfully selected a different method for tailings disposal that would have prevented the disaster.

"As the cost in time and money of data from sensors and small-scale tests has reduced, additional challenges have arisen. Although many mine data sets are not big relative to those in other disciplines, they are complex in other ways, and becoming too large to manage efficiently on personal computers. In order to take advantage of the opportunity offered by increased data, a diverse team from Universidad de Chile and CSIRO Mineral Resources has developed a virtual geometallurgical laboratory to support the computational requirements linking data acquisition with data-driven business decisions. A particular focus to date has been the development of user-guided workflow ensembles to enable comparison between plausible geometallurgical hypotheses.A case study has been undertaken using publicly available data from the Rocklea Dome iron deposit in Western Australia. A hypothetical mining schedule was produced from geochemical and hyperspectral drill core/chips data via the following steps: data preprocessing, exploratory data analysis, geochemical interpolation, block modelling, ultimate open pit design and scheduling. The key outcome of this study was the integration of workflow stages through new plug-in methods or modification of existing software. Many narrow-vein gold deposits are characterised by a high to extreme nugget effect and the presence of coarse gold. They rank amongst the most difficult of deposits to produce an accurate and precise resource estimate. This contribution presents a case study from the Nalunaq Gold Mine in Southern Greenland. The mine commenced operation in May 2004 and is currently operating at a rate of 400 tonnes per day, to produce about 100 000 oz gold per annum from a total resource base of 1.2 Moz. Mineralisation is characterised by quartz veins that are hosted within a shear zone that is continuous over about 1000 m. The principal orebody is the Main Vein structure, which ranges up to 3 m in width, maintains an average dip of 35¦SE, and contains significant gold grades (1000s g/t Au). Gold particles are often visible, with 25 per cent being greater than 250 microns in size. Variography using underground development samples indicates a nugget effect of about 75 per cent. For the 2005 resource estimate, a 2D metal accumulation ordinary kriged block model was used to produce a global grade for the Target and South Blocks of the Main Vein. Grade control chip-channel samples are collected from æshantyÆ drive footwalls, and used as the basis for both the kriged block model and to determine the grade of individual stope blocks by peripheral weighted averages. Geology plays a key role in mining efficiency, given the locally variable nature of the ore zone.

Reuse of process water in mineral and coal flotation plants is widespread to effectively reduce freshwater consumption. However, the accumulation of the frother in the recycled process water is a growing problem as high remnant frother concentration often leads to undesirable overfrothing issues throughout the plants. Various approaches have been proposed by others to measure frother concentration, but none of them is used in flotation practice owing to the requirement of timeconsuming sample preparation steps and/or specialist training to operate and maintain. There is a pressing need for the development of a simple and fast frother concentration measuring technique to avoid overfrothing issues and to optimise the flotation process. The present paper presents two promising approaches to measuring frother concentration online. The first approach measures the concentration of alcohol type frothers based on the host-guest interactions between frother molecules and a formulated liquid. This method is simple and fast as it only requires mixing the formulated liquid with the water sample for up to one minute. The potential of this approach was demonstrated by determination of the residual MIBC concentrations at different locations across a coal flotation plant. The second approach measures frother concentration using a solid-phase extraction (SPE) process and a cryogen-free benchtop NMR spectrometer. Using this approach, both alcohol type and polyglycol type frother solutions can be analysed for concentration determination within 30 minutes. It has also been demonstrated that the concentration of individual frothers in a frother blend (ie MIBC and PPG425 in water) can be accurately analysed even in the presence of background chemicals. This technique has otential for real-time measurement of frother concentration as the whole process can be fully automated.

This paper deals with the design and implementation of a 17 MW (nominal) surface cooling installation at Impala Platinum No 14 shaft located in Rustenburg, North West Province, South Africa.The cooling requirements included the installation of a surface ammonia refrigeration plant complete with the storage of hot and cold mine service water for underground use. It was also necessary to install a surface bulk air-cooling facility, which cools 400 kg/s of ventilation air going to the underground workings. Primary cooling is to the surface bulk air cooler. The cooling duty of a surface bulk air cooler is heavily dependent on the ambient wet-bulb temperature. Because of the daily wet-bulb temperature variation in this part of the world, use was made of a cold thermal storage facility of four million litres. The excess chilled water is stored during the night, for use by the main drilling shift during the day. This keeps the refrigeration machines as close as possible to full load during the summer, thus maximising the use of the capital expenditure. This paper discusses the control philosophy used to maximise the cooling output, as well as the thermal process. The project consisted of two phases resulting from the underground development phases of the mine. The first phase started in January 1999 and was commissioned by the end of the same year in record time. The final commissioning of the second phase took place at the end of 2002. The most difficult part of the construction phase was the tunnelling of a subsurface air duct from the bulk air cooler to the operating vertical shaft. This was done without disruption to the hoisting of men, material and ore in the shaft. Owing to the size of the refrigeration machines, the ammonia quantities involved and the application on a mine (no ammonia can go underground, either in the service water or in the mine air) special precautions had to be taken. South Africa has developed high standards for ammonia refrigeration plants used on mines, which will be partially dealt with in this paper.
