"Hanwha Mining Services was approached by Glencore Coal to provide a series of (trial) demonstration blasts at its Clermont coalmine. The intent of the project was to trial a bulk explosive product that would be able to provide sufficient energy for the ground type encountered without production of post-blast fume. Three blasts were loaded using the patented XLOAD bulk explosives with a density of 1.00 g/cc. XLOAD bulk products are water resistant explosives that can be loaded at densities much lower than traditional (generic) water resistant heavy ammonium nitrate – fuel oil (ANFO) or pumped blends with significantly reduced risk of fume. In addition, these products have detonation characteristics that generally deliver a higher heave partition than conventional bulk products and hence improve muck pile looseness and digability.The priority key performance measures included the absence of fume from blasting, being at least cost neutral and providing similar if not improved shovel dig rates. The design for the initial blast took a conservative approach to ensure the key blast outcomes of fume control and fragmentation were achieved.The second blast used the same pattern dimensions as the benchmark bulk product used in this area to provide a cost neutral comparison with the benchmark products that had been used over the prior six months. This resulted in a 20 per cent lower powder factor than would have otherwise been used. To test the suitability of XLOAD, this shot was slept for over two weeks between loading and firing in geology where the sleep time is typically kept to a few days to minimise the fume risk.The third blast utilised a slightly larger drill pattern to push the capabilities of XLOAD and provide a cost neutral comparison between the trial product and the traditional benchmark products. All three blasts were fired with no fume observed, no recordable incidents and good fragmentation. Shovel productivity from all three of the trial blasts was excellent with higher average instantaneous dig rates being recorded (average six per cent improvement against the instantaneous dig rates recorded for the benchmark blasts).Citation:Rock, J and Bambrook, K, 2016. Grade Engineering® is a value-driven strategy aiming to maximise benefits by exploiting intrinsic grade variability of ore deposits. It utilises a multitude of separation techniques to remove low grade material before being introduced to post-blast size reduction processes, i.e. crushing and grinding. At an operational scale, Grade Engineering® techniques can be implemented at the drill-and-blast stage, to control the degree of fragmentation in accordance with the spatial distribution of valuable minerals across an ore domain through differential blasting. It can also exploit intrinsic textural and breakage characteristics of a given ore type to reject uneconomical barren material at coarse sizes, which is known as Natural Deportment. Grade Engineering® can also be employed in the deliver stage of the mining value chain through sensor-based bulk and particle sorting. Each strategy is therefore highly dependent on the responsiveness of an orebody to available techniques. That is, the extent to which Grade Engineering® drivers would be capable of unlocking potential values of currently un-amenable orebodies depends on how detailed the heterogeneous nature of ore domains can be described. This paper considers exploring possible linkages between deportment characteristics of an ore and its competence when broken in a range of energy inputs at a particlebased level. Accordingly, potential opportunity may lie in exploring whether the intensity of input energy (or degree of fineness) can be used as a lever to improve or ‘unlock’ ore amenability to Grade Engineering® techniques. Implications from such a detailed approach offers new opportunities to enhance Grade Engineering® gains through engineering ore competence variability.

Numerous Fe-Cu-Au-rare earth element (REE) deposits have been identified within the Palaeoproterozoic Dongchuan Group of the Kangdian region of SW China. Geochronologic and geochemical data of the dolerite dykes and other volcanic rocks reveal extensional activity occurred about 1.7 Ga called ‘Kunyang Rifting’. The Kangdian region underwent variable degrees of extension, meaning that breakup in the central part of this region occurred earlier than in the north. Research on microphysiography, isotopic geochemistry and inclusions of the Yinachang typical Fe-Cu-Au-REE deposits suggest that the dominant mineralisation fluid is high-temperature, high-salinity magma fluid, containing alkalic components, volatile phase and Cu-Au. Metasomatism and mixing between this magmatic fluid and carbonaceous wall rock and meteoric water caused the precipitation of Fe, REEs and Cu-Au. A chalcopyrite Re-Os age from the Yinachang deposit obtained during this study is some 50–100 million years younger than the timing of emplacement of the deeply sourced Haizi and Dongchuan dolerites. The Yinachang deposit is a typical iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG)-type deposit, and the presence of this and other deposits in the Kangdian region indicates that the region hosts an intraplate extension-related IOCG system within the western edge of the Yangtze Block, China.CITATION:Hou, L, Ding, J, Zhang, J R, Zhu, S B, Wu, S Y and Peng, H J, 2015. During the past three years Lurgi's Circulating Fluid Bed (CFB) technology has been successfully applied to roasting of refractory gold ores and con- centrates. In comparison with the so-called Stationary Fluid Bed roasting systems, a considerable improvement of gold recovery, to around 95 per cent, has been demonstrated and achieved on many occasions in pilot CFB units and in commercial CFB roasting plants as well. The major reason for such improved gold recoveries is the excellent controllability of the roasting process in the CFB reactor system. Here, temperature, gas atmosphere and solids residence time are more precisely controllable at optimal values during roasting operation in order to achieve the highest possible gold recovery in the subsequent leaching process step. Further dominant benefits of CFB roasting systems are their flexibility with regard to feed material, throughput capacity, dry or slurry feed, almost unlimited oxygen enrichment, direct fuel addition and in situ capture of SO2 in the presence of limestone and dolomite. The system will accept 50 per cent turndown ratio, large variations in feed composition and particle size, as well as a variety of different fuel types. The commercial applications of CFB roasting systems for gold con- centrates have been realized so far at Fimiston, Kalgoorlie/Westem Australia and for whole ores at Cortez, Nevada/USA.

The role and importance of a well designed test work program during the development of an orebody is often underestimated. A test work program should be tailored to deliver very specific answers to relevant questions. With a clear purpose, the results from the test work program will enhance the outcome of the feasibility study and provide the information required to meet the requirements of all stakeholders. With regard to test work programs there are three main areas that should be considered: orebody characterisation and definition, process flow sheet development and engineering design information.Orebody definition relies on reliable analytical methods to characterise and assess the economic minerals present in the ground. In mineral sands, the physical processing characteristics of the minerals play a significant role in the definition of an orebody. The analytical method therefore has to be customised using a combination of laboratory techniques. These techniques can include heavy liquid separation, gravity separation and magnetic separation and are usually combined with chemical and mineralogical analyses to create a picture of the orebody. During the definition phase of test work programs, an appropriate analytical technique has to be developed to evaluate drilling samples, but also to support the information collected during flow sheet development.Process flow sheet development is usually done once there is a reasonable understanding of the size and variability of the orebody. Selecting the best sample for test work is critical, as any flow sheet design is tied to the specific characteristics of the sample used for development. There are other factors that can improve the outcomes of flow sheet development test work, including the skills and knowledge of the operator and allowing sufficient time to process and analyse the results. Very often this work is conducted under pressure with limited time and resources, only to result in a suboptimal flow sheet. During this phase of flow sheet test work, iterative testing will provide the information required to develop an optimal metallurgical flow sheet. The data collected will provide indicative recoveries and yields that are required for feasibility studies.Equipment specification is often included as part of process flow sheet development. This includes comparative test work between different equipment suppliers, assessment of operating conditions such as the loading to determine the number of processing units required, as well as other design information required such as particle size distributions, density and operating temperatures.While restricting the time and costs expended on test work programs may seem to meet a short term need to meet investor requirements, neglecting to develop a proper framework of the requirements that has to be met in the long-term can lead to significant long-term cost overruns. This is mainly due to a need to repeat test work, or do confirmation test work, as insufficient information was collected during the initial program.

Traditionally occupational health and safety (OH&S) has been managed for the direct benefits of reducing injury and illness to workers on mine sites. In the current skill shortage climate it is important to recognise the value that OH&S management can have in assisting mines in minimising their exposure to this issue. In times of skills shortage turnover is high as mines poach personnel from each other. This leads to loss of corporate knowledge and loss in productivity through the need to train new personnel in mine-specific operating procedures. In addition absenteeism can significantly disrupt production as there may be no ready replacements available for key jobs. Pressure will be placed upon workers to remain at work even though they are not completely fit for work, leading to presenteeism and consequently loss in productivity. In addition to the threats to routine operation, the loss of management and professional staff can significantly increase catastrophic risk through loss of experience and corporate knowledge. There is increased pressure to focus on events that occur regularly in the here and the now and underestimate the rare, or unlikely, events.The theme of this paper is that by properly addressing OH&S management at mine sites, companies can minimise their exposure to these problems. Put simplistically, a safe and healthy mine is a sustainable and productive mine. Case studies and relevant literature will be used to support this premise.CITATION:Cliff, D and Bailey, K, 2012. The geology of an area in north-western New South Wales, bounded by the South Australian and Queensland borders, latitude 32° S. and longitude 14° E. is discussed.The area involved includes sixteen 1:250,000 standard military sheets and covers approximately 96,000 sq. miles.The geology of the Willyama Complex is not dealt with but a small area of metasediments previously included in this unit is separated and a possible correlation with Precambrian to the east is suggested. Torrowangee Group sediments are described and the problem of nomenclature using a glacial implication is raised.Nine areas of proven Lower Palaeozoic sediments are considered and their relationship to the boundaries of the Bancannia Trough outlined. It is possible that some exposures not yet substantiated by fossil evidence may prove to be Lower Palaeozoic rather than Precambrian in age.The sediments of the Lachlan Geosyncline in the area of the Cobar massif are described and new concepts on the age and distribution of some of the established stratigraphic units are introduced. The absence of rocks of Middle Silurian age probably indicates the time of a major orogeny in this area.Lithology, thickness, and distribution of the Upper Devonian sediments is considered and some of the more recently found fish plate localities are listed.Mesozoic sediments occur in isolated areas of Lower Jurassic age and in the Great Australian (Artesian) Basin. A four-fold subdivision of sediments of the basin has been possible in some areas but lack of sub-surface information at present, precludes the possibility of correlation with the type sections in Queensland.Units in the Cainozoic are subdivided and a five fold subdivision of the Quaternary, at present being used throughout western New South Wales, is described.

The use of rock bolts as permanent support has been prohibited by client specifications in several recent large tunnel projects in Australia. The justification for this appears to lie in concerns with proper and verifiable installation procedures rather than concerns with the intrinsic durability of the corrosion protection systems. However, in civil tunnels, preventing the use of permanent rock bolts for long-term support results in the use of cast in place concrete lining which in some instances would otherwise be unnecessary.

The placement of chemically reactive mine wastes in mined out pits (æpit backfillingÆ) is increasingly seen by industry as best practice to manage long-term environmental risks. This is primarily because leaving wastes at the surface, or allowing pit lakes to develop, can result in unacceptable environmental risks. The costs and practicality of mitigation options such as installation of covers and community expectations of landform re-construction to achieve a post-mining, beneficial land use are also important drivers for pit backfilling.Pit backfilling can significantly reduce the post-closure risks to receiving environments, by minimising seepage due to tailings, acid/solute generating waste rock and/or salts derived from mine water treatment. Environmental risks are often highest where wastes are located close to the ground surface, due to relatively high rates of groundwater movement in near-surface aquifers and/or failure of engineered structures due to rainfall/erosion processes. Placement of these wastes at significant depth in pits, subject to mine planning and environmental assessment, can address these risks by increasing the path length and resistance from contaminant source to receptor, thus enhancing encapsulation of the wastes.Pit backfilling can also be cost-effective for mining companies. This is because existing pits are developed on the basis of an economic return and thus provide an opportunity to store tailings in an existing æengineered structureÆ at little or no incremental cost when compared with building and operating a new tailings or waste rock storage facility, often encompassing complex cover/drainage management systems. Key issues for consideration are mine planning, the long-term geotechnical behaviour of the wastes (eg consolidation of tailings which leads to release of acid/solutes in tailings porewaters), seepage rates to downstream receptors/agreed end point criteria and potential resource sterilisation. Internationally, mine closure guidelines are also showing a greater recognition of pit backfilling in the context of allowing mining companies to meet agreed post-closure land use objectives.In summary, pit backfilling can enhance the encapsulation of chemically reactive mine wastes and environment protection, and with agreement on post-closure beneficial land use, can also help to deliver post-closure benefits to communities.CITATION:Puhalovich, A A, 2012. With the current focus in the mining industry on reducing costs, while simultaneously improving ore quality, infrared spectroscopy is a tool that can potentially assist companies to meet both challenges. Changes in the nature of infrared spectra are strongly influenced by changes in mineralogy, which is a key input variable for exploration (geology and orebody modelling and ore characterisation) and mining (pit design, mine scheduling and processing plant design/management).Infrared spectroscopic logging of drill holes has been embedded as a standard tool in BHP Billiton Iron Ore exploration, with a process set up to automatically deliver mineralogy and associated imagery to the end users (typically exploration geologists). The availability of consistent and automated mineralogy drill hole logs across a project is improving the output quality and reducing re-work.BHP Billiton Iron Ore is now looking into using the same infrared spectroscopic data for other applications, including improving predictions of geometallurgical and geotechnical parameters. Trials show that addition of infrared spectroscopic data to conventional data sets (element analysis and depth information) is significantly improving the accuracy of regression models to predict the lump-fine ratio.Further initiatives around infrared spectroscopic data in BHP Billiton Iron Ore include the installation of infrared spectroscopic sensors over conveyor belts, infrared spectroscopic mine face scanning and infrared spectroscopic blasthole logging. The ultimate vision is to have consistent, seamless mineralogical data from infrared spectroscopic sensing available throughout the mineral value chain (exploration/mining/processing). This seamless infrared spectroscopic data ‘bridge’ will allow the transfer of knowledge between the different sections of the value chain (exploration, mining and processing). For example, ore handle-ability could be predicted on exploration samples using regression models built from processing plant observations. In the opposite direction, information gathered about the buried stratigraphy by infrared spectroscopy utilised during exploration, could be used to predict the stratigraphy encountered during mining. This collaboration across BHP Billiton Iron Ore is expected to deliver significant savings, while improving the quality of the final product, thus helping to drive efficiency over the next decade.CITATION:Haest, M, Mittrup, D and Dominguez, O, 2015. I congratulate The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy on its decision to hold its Annual Conference here in Western Australia. Western Australia, with its abundant mineral and energy resources, plays a key role in the Australian mining industry... and Western Australia will continue to figure prominently in this vital industry for many years to come. The success of our gold, iron ore, bauxite, mineral sands and other primary industries has enabled Western Australia to contribute significantly to Australia's export revenue and, therefore, to the nation's economic strength. The State's mineral wealth has also provided the impetus for a recent surge in mining related activity, including a dramatic increase in downstream processing of our raw materials. Billions of dollars worth of new project investment is either committed or awaiting final approval - and most of this new investment is a direct result of a healthy and vibrant mining industry. The North West Shelf Project - which has been providing natural gas for homes and industry in Western Australia since 1984 - has also played a key role in stimulating industrial development. The availability of abundant, competitively-priced gas from the North West Shelf has - along with the availability of other raw materials - made Western Australia a more attractive proposition for industrial investment. The company I represent, Woodside Offshore Petroleum, is operator of the North West Shelf Project on behalf of the Project's six Joint Venture Participants - Woodside Petroleum Ltd, BHP Petroleum (North West Shelf) Pty Ltd, BP Developments Australia Ltd, Chevron Asiatic Limited, Japan Australia LNG (MIMI) Pty Ltd and Shell Development (Australia) Proprietary Limited. The theme for this Annual Conference: "Excellence - the key to the continued success of the Australasian mining industry" is appropriate to the North West Shelf Project. The pursuit of excellence has been a hallmark of the Project. The Joint Venture Participants have been conscious of the need for stringent quality control at all stages of development. Procurement and purchasing policies, for instance, have demanded strict adherence by contractors and suppliers to the highest standards and specifications.

"Pierre Gy showed in his early works that the results in estimating the variance of the mean value of continuous lots depends on sampling mode (random, stratified or systematic), except in the theoretical case that the measurand is randomly distributed in the lot. The experimental variance estimate calculated from samples taken from the lot is independent of sampling mode but depends on sample size and the type of the lot heterogeneity. Variography can be used to estimate the variance of the lot mean for different sampling modes.Gy also defined weighting error, which is made if a simple average is calculated from the assays of samples taken from a continuous object (eg from a process stream) where the flow rate varies with time and is correlated with the concentration of the analyte in the stream.The effect on sampling uncertainty of the three sampling modes and their interaction with the following factors in estimating the uncertainty of the mean concentration is studied using simulated lots, and lots having heterogeneity patterns similar to those of real data sets, including the effect of: the type of heterogeneity (random, grading and clustered heterogeneity patterns) increment size and number employing composite sampling weighting error. Following discovery in October 2004, commencement of development in February 2007 and first ore production in mid 2007, the Trident gold deposit, located in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia, has now been successfully mined for over three years. Three years of operational history has enabled the performance of the Trident underground mine to be reconciled against the mine plan and strategy proposed for the original feasibility study.The Trident deposit, initially based on two lode systems known as the Eastern Zone and Western Zone, has been continuously drilled, interpreted and re-interpreted over the period and as a result the addition of the Athena, Apollo and Artemis lode systems as well as numerous smaller scale lodes has been realised. The first three years has seen the Trident underground mine quickly move up to its 1 Mtpa design production rate. The mine plan and strategy used in the initial feasibility study and subsequently implemented, required sufficient flexibility to enable modification and optimisation to mine plans as ore zones were further defined. The ability to modify the mining plans has enabled Avoca to achieve its mining targets at Trident. With over 250 000 ounces gold produced to January 2010, the company is well positioned to achieve its ten year vision associated with the Higginsville Gold Project.This paper offers an account of operational experiences whilst providing comparison to assumptions and methodologies used in the original feasibility study. The paper is a sequel to a paper presented at the Tenth Underground Operators’ Conference held in Launceston, Tasmania titled Development Strategy of the Trident Underground Gold Mine.

The semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill at the MMG Century operation has failing load cells that are essential to the control strategy used to stabilise the mill. Currently, mill-bearing pressure is used as a proxy for the load cells, but it has been found to be a noisy signal and lacking in useful sensitivity. It is also prone to variations and drift due to temperature. After consideration of a number of options, a non-contact acoustic array has been installed around the SAG mill to provide a more stable proxy load signal as well as other information about the internal operation of the?mill.The installation consists of 12 microphones to provide some detail into the operational differences that occur during normal operations at the MMG Century SAG mill. This acoustic approach acknowledges that operational grinding mills emit significant acoustic emissions that are a consequence of the dynamic environment prevailing inside them.Previous studies have attributed the acoustic noise to a range of events that occur inside these mills (Pax, 2011; 2012). Consequently, non-contact acoustic determinations of in-mill behaviour can provide powerful insights into the operation of the primary comminution tumbling mills. By measuring key microphone signal attributes at different positions around a mill, a holistic picture of mill internal operation can be developed.This paper will describe the installation of the 12 microphones and discuss the use of the acoustic load signals as a proxy for failing load cells. It will also present data from new observations of internal mill dynamics and the results of implementation of control using these acoustic signals. As cities become more populated and the need for tunnelling increases, we continue to dig deeper urban tunnels in more challenging ground conditions. At the same time our expectations for durability and long-term performance are increasing.It has become increasingly apparent in recent years that repairing water leaks in tunnels can be very costly and unplanned infiltration can cause undesirable outcomes for long-term maintenance costs, structural durability and environmental impacts. For this reason, tunnel constructors are investing more time and effort upfront into drainage and waterproofing systems.Tunnel membrane systems are becoming accepted as a necessary part of tunnel construction, however the knowledge surrounding selection of appropriate systems, design detailing and installation methods has not increased at the same rate. Currently Australia relies heavily on International Standards from Europe and the United States with no immediate program in place to establish our own locally relevant industry standards.This paper gives an overview of where the industry in Australasia is heading in terms of adopting relevant standards. Current basic waterproof detailing options for drained and undrained tunnels with success and failure of various methods are also addressed. Finally we look at the Brisbane Airport Link as a case study for how tunnel waterproofing contract methods, design and installation issues are being addressed in context with recent projects including the Epping to Chatswood Rail Link in Sydney, Auckland Northern Gateway Tunnel, Eastlink Tunnel in Melbourne and Sydney City West Cable Tunnel.This paper’s primary objective is to propose guidelines for how tunnel waterproofing could be implemented on large infrastructure projects in the future and to map a path for preparing and introducing a ready to use document for selecting appropriate tunnel membrane and drainage systems whilst implementing detailing methods which are appropriate for local conditions.

Over the decades, Redpath has undertaken a multitude of tunnelling and underground excavation projects for civil and mining clients both domestically and internationally. These projects have been undertaken through varying strata conditions with differing excavation methods in remote locations and in central business districts.With the recent turbulent nature of the global financial environment, project drivers have been challenged with the emphasis being placed on methods to gain early access to orebodies, rapid development techniques, lower capital costs and reduced labour requirements to name a few.A number of mining companies seeking to achieve these objectives have commenced the journey to better understand the operational constraints, challenges and opportunities that may be available with the use of alternative excavation methods.The development of safe and effective alternative excavation methods that comply with both domestic and international mining legislation and regulatory requirements is a challenge the industry needs to embrace. Given the current cost pressures being faced by the Australian mining industry, some alternative excavation methods offer the potential for longer term sustainability and rapid development of resources.More recently work has been undertaken on a project that challenged the norm and implemented an alternative excavation method with the use of an excavator with a rotating drum cutter head.This paper will review this recent project and provide technical and operational insight into some of the challenges faced in implementing an alternative excavation method in the metalliferous industry.CITATION:Donnelly, C, Ramage, G and Burke, R, 2014. The 335 000 oz Wilber Deposit is located within the Meekatharra-Wydgee Archaean greenstone belt in the Murchison District of Western Australia. The deposit comprises high-grade gold mineralisation hosted within a steeply west-dipping quartz lode, which lies within a broader (20–60?m) north-east striking shear zone envelope. Locally, the northerly-trending host rock geology includes greenschist facies high-Mg basalt (albite, actinolite, chlorite, biotite, calcite, zoisite, muscovite and titanate) intruded by at least two generations of felsic to intermediate porphyries (albite, actinolite, zoisite, chlorite, sericite, biotite, quartz and titanate). The Archaean rocks are cross-cut by a number of east–west striking Proterozoic dolerite dykes (biotite (50 per cent), albite, carbonate, epidote, titanate and actinolite) that are interpreted to have intruded pre-existing regional structures. The entire mine package is cross-cut by a system of shallow north-east-striking, north-west-dipping, barren quartz veins that commonly contain large (up to 30 cm), euhedral, smokey quartz megacrysts.The north-east-trending lode lies within a 3 m wide shear zone and varies from a single discrete 0.5 to 4 m wide laminated, massive or brecciated quartz-carbonate vein to multiple laminated veins up to 1 m wide within the shear. The veins exhibit strong boudinage, with cross-cutting quartz-carbonate seal veins in the boudin necks. The boudin necks often contain pink calcite. The shear zone fabric wraps closely around the boudin necks proximal to the vein, becoming more lode parallel distal to the vein. The lode is offset by a north to north-north-west trending fault.Mineralisation occurs as free gold within the quartz carbonate veins, with accessory sulfides including pyrite ± chalcopyrite, ± galena ± sphalerite. Fuchsite is observed in the veins, as laminar wall rock inclusions, with visible gold commonly associated with the wall rock laminations.Gold grades range from less than 1 g/t within the hosting shear zone, either at the margins or interstitial to the veins, to approximately 30 g/t in the single vein, and up to greater than 60 g/t in the multiple vein areas. The grinding circuit at PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT) – Batu Hijau mine consists of two SABC (semi-autogenous milling, ball milling, pebble crushing) trains, including four 20'?×?33'6? ball mills that have been lined with steel liners since the commissioning of the plant in 1999. During 2011 and 2012 an industrial trial was conducted to evaluate Poly-Met liners (a combination of rubber and steel liners). These new liners were installed in two of the ball mills (ball mills 1 and 2) and operated in parallel with ball mills 3 and 4 with steel liners.The objective of the trial was to compare the plant performance with the Poly-Met and steel ball?mill liners with regards to wear life, mill throughput, grind size and total unit costs. The trial was conducted over the entire life of the liners. The evaluation methodology implemented consisted of frequent spot sampling around the ball mill circuits, complete surveys/audits in both ball mills, and detailed analysis of process data. "One of the key risks to the success of a mining operation is the accuracy of the estimates of both the economic mineral and any accompanying contaminants contained within the ore reserve. Misrepresenting the mineralogical characteristics of the ore reserve can result in considerable financial investment in an operation that is in fact uneconomic and/or carries a significant environmental risk. This in turn can result in an unplanned closure of the operation with associated financial, environmental and social legacy. One way to minimise this risk is to undertake high density resource sampling to gain a better understanding of the resource characteristics. However, such an approach is expensive, time-consuming and often impractical. The risk of not having an accurate model is typically assessed during a feasibility study utilising a Monte Carlo simulation method or some form of sensitivity analysis. Importantly, the error margins used in these types of analyses are often based on subjective or very general criteria such as ‘professional judgement’ or an ‘industry standard’. This presentation introduces a conditional simulation method for developing a range of mineralogical distribution models. Based broadly on the method outlined in Journel and Kyriakidis (2004) the proposed approach develops this work further. It combines a geostatistical analysis of the available data with automated mine design software to provide a rigorous method for assessing the confidence in the mineralogical characterisation of the ore reserve. The process is based on simulating possible mine plans based on the statistical characteristics of the available resource sample data. These plans are then assessed against high resolution resource models generated using a Sequential Gaussian Simulation method. The outcome is confidence intervals for important characteristics of the ore reserve estimate relative to the actual resource. These confidence intervals are an objective and transparent measure important for assessing closure risks and represent an improvement over common practice.CITATION:Trembath, D, 2016. At Tropicana gold mine (TGM), mine planning is completed from ‘one source of truth’ known as the Integrated Planning Model (IPM). The IPM is a block model which forms a core component of the TGM Mine Planning System – used for short, medium and long-term mine planning cycles, and for Mine to Mill reconciliation.The IPM was developed from a desire to consolidate long-term information contained in mineral resource and ore reserve models, with short-term information from the grade control processes, including grade control models and ore polygons.The IPM is informed initially by resource models, upon which the longer term budget and schedules are based. The IPM is routinely updated with grade control models and ore design information, providing increased confidence for short to medium term mine planning. In this format, the IPM also provides a framework for reconciliation of resource performance with grade control, mining actuals and mining schedules, and ultimately milling. As well as a means for analysing past performance through reconciliation, it has proven its worth as a predictor of variation and an input to successful schedule sequencing and change management. The IPM is a critical component of the TGM Mine Planning System, providing a centralised framework for short interval mill feed prediction through to life-of-mine (LOM) planning.Current development of the IPM is working towards incorporating Mine to Mill optimisation and real-time material tracking projects at TGM. If successful, the model will provide a truly powerful mine planning data source. Current development outlines a mechanism for tracking material from Mine to Mill, and for transferring mill performance data back to the IPM. Increasingly advanced material classification and mine planning, incorporating the multiple geometallurgical variables, will enable the mine to provide consistent mill feed products and result in a steady state and optimised mill.This paper outlines the vision, creation and benefits of the IPM at TGM.
