Mine-derived solutes from Energy Resources of Australia’s (ERA’s) Ranger uranium mine have been closely monitored for decades. Ranger is surrounded by the Northern Territory’s Kakadu National Park and is upstream of Ramsar convention wetlands. Modelling of groundwater flow and solute egress from mine wastes to surface waters has helped ERA successfully assess closure options and secure intermediate regulatory approvals during the site closure process. Potential environmental impacts were assessed using groundwater modelling in support of three ERA applications involving disposal of tailings-derived mine waste. Model results were an important part of the basis for obtaining regulatory approval. Three case studies are presented describing the three applications and how the groundwater modelling supported approval of the applications. For case study #1, INTERA supported ERA in addressing stakeholder concerns in 2017 regarding two aspects of tailings deposition in Pit 3. The first was the potential for flow of tailings fluid into the surrounding formations during tailings deposition. The second was the difference in post-closure magnesium (Mg) loading to surface water for two tailings deposition scenarios. INTERA developed a two-dimensional (2D) model that showed excess tailings pore pressures would not cause outflow and solute egress from the pit during deposition. INTERA’s three-dimensional (3D) models demonstrated that post-closure Mg loading to creeks for both tailings scenarios differed marginally and would be a small fraction of natural creek Mg loads. The modelling results helped avoid delays in completing tailings deposition driven by stakeholders’ environmental concerns. Case study #2 consisted of supporting ERA’s 2019 request for approval to change the tailings deposition method and final tailings level in Pit 3. INTERA’s model results for the permitted and proposed deposition methods showed minimal differences in post-closure Mg loading to creeks. The model results helped ERA obtain the needed approval for the tailings deposition method and water and tailings levels in Pit 3. For case study #3, INTERA modelled the comparative impacts from leaving the entire contaminant plume from the temporary tailings storage facility (TSF) in situ or excavating a portion of the contaminated material from beneath the TSF floor and placing it in Pit 3. The modelling results supported an approved TSF contaminated material application important for ERA to stay on schedule and minimise both closure costs and environmental impacts.

When developing a new underground mine, the geological interpretation that guides the mineral resource is crucial to the preparation of a reliable ore reserve. In preparing a robust geological model to underpin a resource estimate, practitioners must weigh the comparative risk of accepting a relatively wide-spaced drill hole pattern, versus a more close-spaced pattern that ensures a high local geological confidence for mine planning but may have an exponentially increased time and monetary cost. This paper details the authors’ investigations into the geological uncertainty of IGO’s Odysseus Deposit, which is approximately 645 km north-east of Perth, Western Australia. At Odysseus, the komatiitic nickel sulfide mineralisation is irregularly cross-cut by nickel-barren pegmatites that have intruded and offset its thick ultramafic orebodies. These pegmatites generate significant uncertainty in the precision of Odysseus’ resource volume and tonnage estimates, as well as the subsequent quantification of pegmatite mining dilution in its ore reserve. To quantify the geological uncertainty in the pegmatite interpretations, IGO’s mineral resource practitioners prepared several geological risk studies over the Odysseus North lode, which is the lode most affected by the pegmatites. These studies included categorical conditional simulation of the pegmatites, preparing implicit geological models with alternative algorithms, trialling a machine learning application to prepare a maximum likelihood geological model, and finally assessing the early results of the pre-production close-spaced drilling to these different models. To assess the precision of the different single-outcome models, the authors’ compared the estimated pegmatite content of each model to the range of possibilities modelled by categorical conditional simulation within the planned stopes at Odysseus North. An estimation confidence score for each modelling method was then prepared for each alternative single-outcome modelling method. From these studies IGO concluded that a close-spaced drill pattern is essential at Odysseus, supporting the view of the Competent Person in 2017 who proposed a 25 m drill spacing in areas affected by pegmatite which had been partially classified as Inferred.

The Project Specification and Technical Requirements documents associated with several recent large road tunnel projects within Australia have specified the application of AS/IEC 61508 – FunctionalSafety of Electrical/Electronic/Programmable Electronic Safety Related Systems at very high performance levels for the various control and fire life safety systems associated with such facilities.This paper seeks to explore the implications of referencing this standard within the road tunnel services context in terms of practicality, complexity and cost, whilst providing some examples of how a high safety integrity level (SIL) level can theoretically be achieved given current hardware availability.

There are a number of points on which I would like further information, but I will confine my remarks to a relatively small saving which is of particular interest in view of another paper to be presented this afternoon.Mention is made of a 50 per cent reduction in the amount of zinc used in the precipitation of gold slime from the pregnant solution. Would Mr. Harris enlarge on the methods by which they obtained this reduction; and could he give an actual figure of zinc consumption either by ton of ore treated or per ounce of bullion recovered.AuthorsWe consider the reduction of zinc is due to improved clarification of the pregnant solutions. The sand clarifiers used prior to the installation of the 50 ft. -thickener were not satisfactory due mainly to the blending of the hessian and matting under the sand. Under these conditions the leaf clarifiers were fed with overflow solution from the clarifiers and were overloaded in consequence. The addition of Calgon has also been beneficial.The present consumption of zinc per ton of solution treated is 088 lb. per ton.A. L. Turbulence and its distribution are of great importance in flotation, and have received considerable attention recently. However, there is no mature technique to measure turbulence in three-phase (liquid-solid-gas) industrial flotation cells due to the opaque, highly aggressive and abrasive nature of the slurry involved. Previous research has shown that the piezoelectric vibration sensor (PVS) is a promising tool for turbulence measurement in industrial flotation cells. The PVS is a robust device that converts mechanical vibration to electrical signal, from which turbulence information can be extracted. An improved calibration method has allowed development of a frequency model to calculate the force applied to the sensor. Experimental results and comparison with laser doppler anemometry (LDA) have shown that the PVS can measure fluid kinetic energy, which is related to turbulent kinetic energy, a parameter used in the literature to represent turbulence in flotation. Laboratory measurement in a two-phase (water and air) 60 L cell and with slurry in a 3.5 L cell gave good stable results and mostly consistent trends between the measured turbulence profile and cell operation. When applied in a 300 m3 industrial cell filled with water, the addition of air or slurry to the cell resulted in a shift in the turbulence profile. This is expected because a change in fluid density will change the force applied to the sensor. It is therefore concluded that the piezoelectric sensor is an easy-to-use and robust technique that is fully capable of measuring turbulence in industrial flotation environments.CITATION:Meng, J, Tabosa, E, Xie, W, Runge, K C and Holtham, P, 2014. "Cayeli Bakir Isletmeleri is an underground copper-zinc mine in turkey. The ore is highly variable with feed grades ranging from 1–4 per cent copper and 1–10 per cent zinc. Due to this variability, ore characterisation and blending strategies are crucial for performance optimisation.This paper presents a case study for a multidisciplinary approach to process optimisation, integrating Geometallurgical and advanced control methods to achieve optimised plant performance. The results from comprehensive metallurgical tests and surveys were used to develop a mathematical model utilising SGS’s Integrated Geometallurgical Simulator® (version number 2.5.24.0). The model was employed to determine the most appropriate operational settings required to ensure that optimised grades and recoveries are achieved for each ore type.SGS’s Modular Expert Technology (MET) expert system was then implemented to target these optimum operational ranges utilising online grade and froth velocity measurements. The theme i wish to develop in this talk is how we might make use of the scientific and technological knowledge we now have ofextraction metallurgy to meet the present-day needs of the production industry.Before doing so, I would like to say a few words in tribute to Dr. G.K. Williams since he was a past master at precisely what I wish to talk about. I knew G.K., as everybody called him, during the time he spent at Avonmouth in the late 40's and in the 50's. Later, when he was ostensibly retired, I had the pleasure several times of lunching with him when I was visiting Melbourne.When G.K. was at Avonmouth, the Imperial Smelting Process was in that capricious adolescent stage in between the pilot plant and the full-scale commercial unit. G.K. was a great collector of process plant data which hung in cascades from the walls of his office and-from his hand-operated desk calculator. What G.K. understood very well were the basic metallurgical and engineering principles of what was going on in the sinter machine, the shaft furnace and all their ancillaries.

Particles are by far the easiest objects to simulate, because their dynamics is simple. Determining the motion of particles and their interaction, a wide variety of deformable structures can be constructed by connecting particles that have mass, position, and velocity, and that respond to forces. Starting from this simple idea we have derived what we call the particle-lattice method for the solutions of boundary value problems of deformation and fracture of solid mass. The problem of rock breaking by blasting operations as well as fracture and flow of rocks fragments involve momentum transfer between solid and fluid; gas flow and reactive mass transfer. In this paper we outline the method and describe briefly the salient features of the algorithm. We derive relationships between the contact properties for the discrete model and the properties of the underlying continuum and fluid flow coupling procedure. Finally we illustrate the potential of the method by means of example solutions related to the dynamic fracture and flow in jointed rock by blasting.

For decades, organisations worldwide have been working to overcome challenges associated with new technology adoption while keeping up with rapid growth, development, and globalisation. In minerals processing, the challenges in developing and implementing solutions that contribute to the mining value chain are unique from other markets, as mining operations expect that world-class suppliers provide them solutions to gain a competitive advantage in their operation, production, performance as a financial asset, and as a long-term partner as we move into the future of mining. A simple shift in mindset is proven key to successful technology implementation. Change leaders must no longer think of their expertise in the area of application as their only responsibility; they must make a mental shift and see themselves in dual roles that strive to integrate the perspectives and needs of both developers and users. Successful change leaders must: (1) collaborate, seeking user involvement to ensure fit between product and operational needs, (2) demonstrate commitment to receive new technology, and (3) communicate to achieve an eventual shift of ownership from supplier to users that is seamless. Additionally, this strategy contributes to the mining value chain, as it allows developers and implementers to evaluate how change contributes to the asset’s position both within the company and in the commodities market. This paper will explain the shift in perspective for new technology implementation in detail and provide recommendations that operations can emulate, using examples of real challenges and lessons learned during a commissioning of the CYCLONEtrac™ Particle Size Tracking (PST) system at Cerro Verde’s C2 Concentrator. This concentrator has led technological change for plant optimisation, witnessed improved Net Metal Production (NMP), among other benefits with PST, the only technology in the market capable of providing real-time, online, and direct particle size measurement at the individual hydrocyclone level

Coal mining reclamation is a worldwide concern. This paper presents a Brazilian example where the economic aspects of reclamation are considered. The basic goal of the study is to transform the reclamation procedures into an economic process by integrating the use of land after reclamation and developing profitable post operations. Some of the activities considered in this case study include: using of the coal pit as a landfill, considering appropriate landfill design and construction; using the area for forest development; and developing grassland, forests of native species and the construction of ponds for fishery. This study will conclude that the mined area is: capable of storing large quantities of waste at a competitive cost and at a low environmental risk; commercial forest development is economically feasible; and the lakes and other reclaimed areas can be integrated into the landscape creating a fresh water supply and an area to raise cattle.

A new synthetic reagent of the mercaptobenzoxazole class, 5- methyl-2-mercaptobenzoxazole, has been studied. This reagent exhibits powerful selective collecting action towards copper sulphides present in several complex ores, as demonstrated both by laboratory and pilot plant tests. Industrial production is expected to start in the near future. The way this reagent reacts with pure chalcocite has been studied utilising in situ FTIR techniques, adsorption tests, electrokinetic potential measurements and Hallimond cell flotation tests. The FTIR studies have indicated the nature of the surface phase. Adsorption isotherms obtained by the rest method have revealed the quantitative evolution of surface products, permitting the determination of surface coverage at various reagent concentrations. The electrokinetic potential has been utilised to verify the stability of individual species in diverse concentration ranges. Correlation of the results obtained has provided indications on the chemical interaction of this reagent with the surface and on the surface Arrangement.

A discrete event computer simulation model was developed for two of the stoping methods currently used at the Z.C. Mines Broken Hill oper- ations. The objective in undertaking this project was to provide an effective tool for mine planning and design to allow comparisons of alternative extraction strategies and attempt to optimise the allocation of capital equipment and human resources. The Slam II simulation program was used in conjunction with ,a com- monly used data editor, text editor and graphics package to allow the simulation to be done on a personal computer with minimum training requirements. The computer hardware used was a portable computer cur- rently available using 80386/20MHz electronics. Specific logic techniques were developed to allow the Slam II language to simulate mining opera- tions because it was originally developed for manufacturing and com- mercial simulations. The design of the model was based on observations and a data collec- tion campaign. The model was designed with flexibility which allows simple editing of the input data which includes: - Insitu volumes - Development statistics -Loadout efficiencies -Loader speeds, availabilities and capacities -Chute numbers, volumes, distances and blockage statistics -Trucking statistics -Work schedules -Utility statistics

The Trident Gold Deposit has been successfully developed by Alacer Gold (formerly Avoca Resources Limited) into a 1.3 Mt/a operation in the space of four years from discovery to first gold pour (2008). The current in situ Resource for Trident is estimated to be 5 900 000 t @ 5.0 g/t for 940 000 ounces at a cut-off of 1 g/t or 2 g/t depending on ore style. Production to date (Alacer and previous owners) is in excess of 500 000 ounces. The deposit lies towards the southern end of the Norseman-Wiluna Greenstone Belt in the Archaean Yilgarn Craton, where it is centred on the historical Higginsville Mining Centre, midway between the world class gold centres of St Ives (+15 Moz) and Norseman (+6.5 Moz). Trident is hosted primarily within a thick, weakly differentiated gabbro with subordinate mafic and ultramafic lithologies and comprises a series of north-northeast trending, shallowly north plunging ore zones. The deposit comprises two main mineralisation styles; large wallrock-hosted ore-zones comprising sigmoidal quartz tensional vein arrays and associated metasomatic wall rock alteration (Eastern Zone, Western Zone and Apollo) hosted exclusively within the gabbro; and thin, lode-style, nuggety laminated quartz veins (Athena and Artemis) that formed primarily at sheared lithological contacts between the various mafic and ultramafic lithologies. The initial interpretation of the Trident Deposit was based on steeply-dipping structures controlling the zones of mineralisation, with much of the targeting and drill-testing aimed at this style of orebody. Subsequent exposure of the orebodies has identified a series of shallow-east dipping mineralised systems (interpreted to be large reverse shears) that at their intersection with the steep-dipping structures cause significant gold enrichment. It is postulated that both orientations are primary fluid pathways with the intersection between the two resulting in zones with significantly high concentrations of gold mineralisation (in excess of 300 000 ounces). This new understanding on ore controls at Trident has identified that the thin lode-style shear-hosted laminated veins are continuous for over 1700 m along strike as they step en echelon down-plunge. In addition, a repetition and periodicity to the intersection between these steep dipping lode-style systems and the shallow-dipping mineralised zones (estimated to be 700 - 900 m down-plunge) has been identified which has considerably increased the down-plunge potential of the Trident Deposit.

As an Inspector of Mines in Queensland, my main responsibilities include the enforcement of the Mining Act 1968 - 1986, the Mines Regulation Act 1964 - 1983 and the Metalliferous Mining regulations 1985 to promote the safe and responsible exploitation of the States' mineral wealth. An important adjunct to this task is the offering of an advisory service to the mining industry. However, in the pursuit of my duties to this regard, I have sadly observed in some cases, numerous wrong doings and negative activities by miners which have led to their ultimate demise, not to mention that of others. Despite what I consider corrective advice, I have witnessed, again in some cases, disregard and blind pursuit for the wrong end. This then is a novel approach to get the message home in the form of a light hearted cartoon presentation relating the saga of an average Aussie battler entering the mining game unprepared, making the wrong decisions due to his own ignorance and the cleverness of others, leading finally to his and possibly others' downfall. It is not intended to insult any particular profession or group of individuals and only endeavours to impart to readers and listeners, the message of being prepared and alert when entering the gold mining industry. Even though the presentation focuses on the woes of a rookie alluvial gold miner, a similar analogy could be drawn with his hard rock counterpart since the basic issues that I have attempted to address are common. By no means is there a saga complete because there are many more traps a miner can inadvertently fall into and only time has prevented me from referencing them.

Many persons hold the opinion that the metal indus- ries are fortuitous and that the occupation is one of sordid toil, and altogether a kind of business requir- ing not so much skill as labour. But as for myself, when I reflect carefully upon its special points one by one, it appears to be far otherwise. So wrote Georgius Agricola in 1556. He could have been espousing the sentiments of an indus- trial archaeologist investigating mining sites in 1986. South Australia has a very rich legacy from its industrial past-especially in the area of its mining history. Industrial archaeology, which is part of the broad field of archaeology, is concerned with the material and documentary remains of this industrial past. This includes the products and processes of manufacturing, industrial, technolog- ical and engineering activity and their relation- ships to people and the environment. `Archaeology' immediately conjures up the image of excavations in Greece or Eygpt. Excavation however is only a part of archaeological methodology. Industrial archaeology utilizes documentary historical rec- ords combined with field survey techniques (both above and below ground) to create a composite picture of the past. Interest in our recent past has burgeoned in Australia in the last few years. This interest manifests itself in many ways-the unprecedented popularity of Australiana and col- lecting, the plethora of Australian historic films, the growth of the National Trust, local historical societies and genealogical research. Fortunately these trends have been reflected in academic and legislative circles. Various univers- ities, institutes of technology and colleges of advanced education run courses in aspects of cul- tural resource management and conservation of the historic environment. These courses are com- prised of archaeology, architecture, geography, his- tory, materials conservation, museum studies, and national parks management and planning.

Ore textures in Australian BIF-derived ores are quite complex and have formed the basis for ore genesis models, which includes hypogene upgrading or supergene upgrading then regional metamorphism for the microplaty hematite ores and supergene upgrading for the martite-goethite ores. Despite a high level of ore texture knowledge, little is known about the spatial distribution of ore textures within deposits or their relationship to downstream processing. This paper describes a new iron ore texture classification system to better understand the vertical textural zonation characteristics of Australian BIF-derived deposits, the interpreted role of recent supergene upgrading processes on modifying primary ore textures and their implications for downstream mineral processing. The iron ore textural classification scheme presented uses textural groupings defined on the basis of similarities in mineralogy, ore texture, porosity, mineral associations and hardness. The scheme is non-genetic and has been successfully applied to deposits in the Pilbara, Yilgarn and Gawler cratons. The main ore texture groups include dense martite/hematite, microplaty hematite, microplaty hematite-goethite, martite-goethite, goethite-martite and goethite-rich. Each group can be further subdivided into physically hard to softer subcategories. The ore textural groups can be divided into those interpreted to be associated with primary replacement of BIF and secondary textures resulting from more recent modification by near-surface hydration or dehydration processes. A schematic vertical section through BIF-derived deposits consists (from surface) of detritals underlain by a carapace, both of which may have been eroded, followed by a hydrated zone with replacement of primary ore martite and microplaty hematite by vitreous goethite. The hydrated zone is underlain by 0.2 - 6 m thick zones of intense dehydration and textural infilling of porosity with hematite and hydrohematite. Immediately below the dehydration zone is a strong zone of leaching, where more porous and friable ore textures occur, followed underneath by a gradational contact with primary ore. Secondary supergene processes can impact on beneficiation with hydration and leaching resulting in more difficult density separations at the concentrator stage due to reductions in density differences between ore and gangue and loss of heavy media into pores. Supergene modification of primary BIF-derived ore textures can substantially change lump metallurgical properties, with hydration and dehydration favourably increasing lump yield but reducing resistance to thermal shock whilst leaching will give the opposing outcome. The lump properties of ore textural groups appear to be relatively consistent within and between the iron ore deposits examined.

"The Braemar Iron Formation is atypical ore when compared to the current magnetite ores being processed. In attempting to process and economically recover the vast quantities of iron ore stored within the Braemar Iron Formation, æshifting the paradigmÆ is required. The formation has a low Davis tube recovery (DTR) grade of 15 - 20 per cent, which is much lower than magnetite ores processed in Australia. Despite this, by thoroughly testing and understanding the ore characteristics, it is found that the Braemar ores have significant advantages to processing than the harder banded iron formation (BIF) and taconite resources.The Hawsons magnetite iron ore resource has been known from the early 1960s when CRA explored the area. The grade was low and the Pilbara region discovery lead to the development of high-grade direct shipping hematite ores. Carpentaria Exploration (CAP) rediscovered the magnetite whilst undertaking multi-commodity exploration in the Broken Hill district during 2009. Shifting the paradigm away from grade the advantages of processing this ore are achieved by having an extremely low waste to ore ratio, lower Bond work index, lower abrasion levels and high-grade magnetite concentrates with little impurities other than silica. While developing the Hawsons Iron Project (HIP) it became more apparent that a positive business case is achievable when the following factors are exploited: very large resource - the resource is contained within one pit the rock fractures easily along grain boundaries - ideal for cheap impact crushing of the ore the ore is extremely soft, with a Bond work index of 6.3 - 8.0 kWh/t all major infrastructure required is readily available - rail, power, access and port the mine is in close proximity to Broken Hill - rich mining history and skill set available the resource contains many billions of tonnes of magnetite mineralisation.Shifting the paradigm by selecting equipment suitable for processing soft ores and not hard BIF or taconite ores and taking locality and available infrastructure into account may change the way people approach new low-grade resources in future.CITATION:Koenig, R L and Broekman, K T, 2013. Technology adoption in the mining industry has been steadily increasing over the past decade, driven by the need to improve operational efficiency, safety, sustainability, and profitability. As mining companies wish to implement solutions to improve mining safety and productivity, various technologies are being integrated into mining operations to enhance processes, reduce risks, and optimise resource utilisation. Adoption of new technologies such as autonomous trucks requires a strong focus on foundational operational technology (OT) and a systems-thinking approach. OT support is critical however, OT is traditionally not considered or integrated into standard maintenance activities. Consequently, sourcing and applying service support to OT systems in real-time has posed significant challenges to date. Neglecting the monitoring and upkeep of these operational technologies and equipment can lead to a host of adverse consequences. Operating instability becomes more prevalent, necessitating reactive measures, and the vulnerability to cybersecurity threats increases significantly. To address OT monitoring and maintenance challenges, a systems wide mindset and remote support discipline must be utilised. Remote operations support refers to real-time, 24/7 monitoring, control and support of site OT: network, production systems, maintenance systems, enterprise systems and mobile and fixed plant through a single interface remote from site. The presence of a disciplined team, grounded in a systems-oriented approach, is of the utmost importance to remote monitoring, given the intricate interdependencies of OT systems. Argyle Diamond Mines Pty. Limited (ADM), manager and operator of the Argyle Diamond Mines Joint Venture (ADMJV) will recruit approximately 400 employees during 1985 to operate the new large-scale, open-cut diamond mine and treatment plant being developed at Argyle, in the East Kimberley Region of Western Australia. These employees will live in Perth or environs and will commute to work at Argyle via chartered jet aircraft. On site, they will be accommodated in self-contained single person's quarters, with central messing and recreational facilities. Rostering systems have not been finalised, but it is likely employees will rotate through a cycle of 14 days at site and seven-days on leave in Perth. ADM spent three years evaluating residen- tial options before deciding to commute its workforce from Perth. Another 70 senior staff will reside in Kununurra (the nearest established town, 250 km from Argyle) and commute to the mine daily by air.

RME has a vision for a new mill operational paradigm made possible by RMEÆs fast, safe Mill Relining System. This vision can be moved forward into reality at any time with or without guidance from recent development in measurement and predictive modelling tools.Some new liner designs can degrade SAG mill performance because of mill volume loss, ball strike (rotational speed limitations) and other issues often brought about by optimising liners for life and without a backward glance at metallurgical consequences. Freshly relined mills can initially produce as little as 80 per cent of their maximum throughput, that maximum occurring toward the end of the linersÆ wear life. RMEÆs proposition is to design new liners for maximum commercial performance. This may mean more frequent changes of liners but with liners designed to yield optimum grinding, metallurgical and profitability performance. In other words, mill liner profiles and mill relining speed become key operational controls and not simply æmust doÆ maintenance functions. Taken to the extreme, liner profiles may prove capable of ætuningÆ a grinding plant for maximum profitability in any metal price environment. This paper provides an update regarding RMEÆs fast, safe Mill Relining System technologies and outlines RMEÆs vision of a æliner profile versus profitabilityÆ model as a function of metal price, developed intuitively or by using a combination of new measurement and modelling technologies. These new measurement and modelling tools provide the opportunity to predict the optimum commercial outcome, off-line in the virtual world, before committing to an expensive liner experiment.
