A lead-zinc-pyrite flotation middling was pressure oxidised to give residues containing iron hydroxy sulphates (a mixture of basic iron sulphate (BIS) and a hydrated iron sulphate (HIS)) and lead sulphate. Direct thiourea leaching of this residue gave over 90 per cent extraction of gold and silver, but thiourea consumption was high (56 kg/t) because of soluble iron(M) in the residue. Attempts were made to decrease the thiourea consumption by removing the water-soluble iron(M) or reducing it to iron(II). Water washing of the pressure oxidation residue removed most of the hydrated iron sulphate but little of the basic iron sulphate. Iron removal was only 12-20 per cent, depending on the number of washes, from one sample which was low in HIS, and 40-45 per cent in another which was high in HIS. Iron extraction was not appreciably increased by using dilute sulphuric acid (with or without additions of sodium sulphite), dilute phosphoric acid, or sodium chloride solution (150 g/L NaCI). Direct thiourea leaching of the water-washed residue gave over 90 per cent extraction of gold but only 49 per cent of silver, with a thiourea consumption of 27 kg/t. However, the application of a water wash followed by reduction of dissolved iron(III) with sodium sulphite in the presence of thiourea, and then thiourea leaching resulted in over 98 per cent extraction of gold and silver for a thiourea consumption of 26 kg/t.

A reliable laboratory method to characterise the response of free gold particles when subjected to flash flotation conditions has been developed by AMIRA P420 researchers at Curtin University. This test has been applied to assess the flotation recovery of gravity recoverable gold from free milling ores as well as synthetic ores featuring either a gravity concentrate or gold powder. The current status of battery collection and recycling schemes in Australia are explored in light of current developments in product stewardship and increasing pressure to decrease materials going to landfill by originating equipment manufacturers. Used consumer batteries, both single cycle and rechargeable contain a mixture of valuable metals and potentially toxic materials that may become a resource/revenue stream to offset the cost of disposal/recycling. Although the volume of batteries discarded in Australia is modest compared to other global population centres, the expected increase in battery use with increasing equipment portability and future developments in the automotive industry, provide an opportunity to recycle. The requirements for a battery recycling facility in Australia and the most promising processing platforms that may exploit the resource with enough flexibility to cope with battery developments and market trends, are explored.

The Engel Model search simulator is described with particular emphasis on preparation of input parameters. The computer has a "black box" role in the same way a telephone or radio is a "black box" in communications. A search technique (sensor) is selected and applied in two stages of'search, namely, reconnaissance and detailed. The model relies on knowing and quantifying the parameters of the target sought and the search technique; this is usually done by analogy studies from available literature and experience. The parameters are then balanced by feasibility studies on the search area. Case histories show that the study makes the user aware of what he is likely to find rather than what he wants or needs to find to be viable. Two case histories are presented: one for Mississippi Valley type lead- zinc deposits and another for stratiform copper. The first study showed particular benefits in the input stage and highlighted the fact that one could expect a lot of encouragement by way of interesting results but with little chance of finding the high-grade,

Hamersley Iron's pellet plant at Dampier involves ore drying, dry grind- ing in ball mills, disc balling and, indurating by use of the straight grate system. After five years of operation, the plant's output has been increased from the design capacity level of 2 M.T.P.Y. to 2.5 M.T.P.Y. Steps taken in equipment modifica- tion, improvements in process control, and changes in maintenance procedures are described.

The loss of 11 miners in the 7 August 1994 Moura No.2 Underground Mine Disaster was the catalyst for major change in the way safety was managed in the Australian Mining Industry. The impact was felt across all sectors not just underground coal. It was the catalyst for the overhaul of the regulatory frameworks, moving away from prescription to management systems and risk management. This had a substantial impact on the way not only the industry operated but also on how the regulator functioned. It heralded the introduction of competency-based training across all levels of the mining workforce. Since that time major improvements in safety performance have occurred. However, hiding within the statistics are some disturbing trends. This paper aims to analyse the progress made in the past 30 years and identify the current and emerging issues. Automation is bringing major production and safety benefits, but at the same time other factors such as the reduction in workforce numbers and ever-increasing production pressures are leading to high turnover rates. This in turn causes to a loss of experience and expertise. In addition, and of particular importance, is the recognition of psychosocial wellness on workforce safety. Many of these factors are not unique to the mining industry however they may be exacerbated by the scale of mining, the remoteness of the mines and family unfriendly mining rosters.

The Rocklands copper project is a multilode, iron oxide copper gold (IOCG) + cobalt mineralised system located in the Eastern Fold Belt of the Mt Isa Inlier. Rocklands orebodies cover a range of oxidation zones from oxide, to supergene and primary. Each zone contains different economic minerals of interest. The supergene zones contain significant amounts of native copper and the primary zones are dominated by chalcopyrite. The juxtaposition of these oxidation zones and minerals make it an interesting mineralisation system.Current mine production sampling collects a nominal 3 kg drill chip sample from a 1 m composite, RC drilled interval. A site specific sampling procedure was needed to quantify introduced sampling error when taking grade control samples. Due to oxidation and mineralogical variation in ore zones we needed to develop a practically achievable sampling methodology that ensures minimum sample mass and sample error requirements are achieved to ensure ‘representative’ samples for all ore types.These issues are planned to be resolved using an experimentally derived method using principles from the Theory of Sampling. This method uses an experimental calibration of parameters K and a for Gy’s fundamental sampling error formula using a modified 32-piece sampling tree experiment to compile sampling nomograms for the primary and supergene ores. This paper demonstrates the process undertaken to improve the quality and standard of existing mine production sampling procedures at the Rocklands operation.Results indicate a sample mass of 5 kg for RC drill chips is appropriate for both the primary and supergene ores to achieve a fundamental error below 0.01 or 10 per cent relative error, which is slightly higher than the existing sampling protocol of 3 kg. An additional experiment is recommended to compile sampling nomograms using the exact laboratory comminution and mass reduction stage information to assess the use of a 3 kg sample. The results also indicate no changes are required to existing sampling protocols when sampling RC drill chips in primary and supergene ore at Rocklands.Sampling nomogram results also provide a useful ‘rule of thumb’ reference guide to other mining and exploration companies to help understand minimum sample mass requirements and sampling error during exploration drilling, resource evaluation and mining production stages when targeting similar IOCG mineralised systems. A sample mass of 5 kg is recommended when RC drilling similarly IOCG mineralised prospects and deposits in the Cloncurry area. Future test work is recommended when additional open cuts become active as well as including resource drilling drill core to provide better three-dimensional sample representivity.CITATION:Hawtin, M G, 2017. For a multitude of years fine iron ore, -1 mm, across the world has been deposited as discard material in tailings facilities. This contributes to environmental problems, decreases plant yield and increases the cost of processing. Fine iron ore recovery processes are often deemed unfeasible or uneconomical, due to the complexity of the reclamation thereof in comparison with high-grade ores. However, recent advances in the recovery of fine iron ore using the Optima Classifier® has shown great promise. The Optima Classifier® is a new hindered settling separator that makes use of an upward current of water for density separation. It’s unique design combines three different separating zones for increased efficiency and recovery. In this study the potential of the Optima Classifier® to produce a +63 per cent Fe concentrate from -1 mm feed material was evaluated from a standalone and process perspective. It was found that a +63 per cent Fe product can be produced from a single stage, using the Optima Classifier®. Fine iron ore feed with an average head grade of 50 per cent Fe was upgraded to average concentrate grades of 63.2 per cent Fe. Displaying upgrade ratios of up to 1.26 in a single stage. A three-stage, rougher, cleaner and scavenger system did however show the best performance with recoveries of up to 70 per cent, yielding 56 per cent of a 63 per cent Fe product. Furthermore, the dewatering of the product and tailings was evaluated using the UltraG ultra-fine dewatering screen ensuring dry, stackable material. The tailings could be used in codisposal, while loads on thickeners and filter presses are significantly reduced. The high throughput of the Optima Classifier® ensures a small plant footprint, minimal civil and structural requirements and low operating utility consumption such as electricity, minimising the carbon footprint of a fines beneficiation plant. The Optima Classifier® in combination with the UltraG dewatering technology has provided a platform for economical recovery of fine iron ore, both current arising and historical. Ernest Henry mine (EHM) is an underground sublevel caving mine located in north-west Queensland with a production rate of 6.4 Mt/a. The mine has sublevels spaced with a 25 m vertical interval. The production process on each level starts with the drilling and firing of a blind uphole rise to start the slot extraction. These rises are fired as a single shot and routinely need to achieve a design height of 22 m to 30 m depending on the local mine geometry. If the rise fails to perform as designed then the production phase of the level is delayed with significant rework required to remedy the situation.This paper describes the process that the EHM team has followed to improve the first time performance of each rise. The improvement process commenced with a review of results from previous rises and resulted in the identification of a number of improvement opportunities. A revised holistic approach was established for the process, which included involvement from operators and engineers. Through continued measurement and review of rise performance, inputs to the process were improved to a point where reliable results can now be expected. The successful performance of subsequent rises has been verified through a comprehensive quality assurance quality control (QA/QC) program. Before quality control processes were implemented, the success rate of blind uphole rises was only 11 per cent (one out of nine rises) at EHM. In comparison, the success rates have been vastly improved to 25 per cent (one out of four) and 75 per cent (three out of four) respectively following two stages of improvements. When used in suitable ground conditions, rock bolts can have advantages over other permanent tunnel lining solutions. Permanent rock bolts offer flexibility in tunnelling profile and rapid rock bolt installation can enable time and cost savings. There are also disadvantages when considering the suitability of rock bolts for permanent support installations. These generally concern achieving the specified durability requirement over the specified design life. By investigating alternate approaches to rock bolt installation, quality assurance (QA), monitoring and design life it may be possible to alleviate some of these concerns.The design and construction benefits that can be realised through the use of rock bolts are primarily related to reducing project program time. This time reduction could be realised if rock bolts are considered as a permanent solution, with the installation being completed as a part of the primary excavation cycle. Any reduction of the program could allow direct and indirect cost savings and in the case of a major project, allow the revenue stream to be realised earlier.Currently ambiguity exists where the treatment of rock bolts as permanent support components is inconsistent with that of (often identical) ground anchors, as utilised in stabilising cut and cover structures. The ground support design process, implementation and testing are generally similar, though the acceptance of rock bolts as long-term support elements is treated differently to ground anchors in technical specifications.This paper discusses some of the benefits available through the use of rock bolts. It offers different solutions to the concerns surrounding durability, including alternate approaches to installation, Quality Assurance practices and monitoring solutions. The selection of an alternate design life is also investigated as another means of alleviating concerns around long-term durability. The paper will also provide an indication of savings that could be expected through the use of rock bolts as part of a long-term support system.

While sampling techniques used by the mineral industry continue to improve, sampling is still an area which is often neglected. It is often left to personnel who do not fully appreciate the significance and importance of sampling. Yet sampling and sample processing are of vital importance. There is little point in making major capital investments in the latest analytical equipment and spending considerable time obtaining the best analytical precision, if the sample provided for analysis is seriously biased in the first place.

The pilot scale testing of Australian coals for their NO, emissions was carried out at the ACTC to investigate the influence of coal properties, furnace conditions and different NO,, control strategies on NO,, emissions. The NOx emissions for the Australian coals tested were found to vary over a wide range and primarily depended on combustion temperature and excess oxygen conditions. These coals did not exhibit any fundamental difference in NOx levels to other world coals. Under similar combustion conditions, the conversion of coal nitrogen to NO. was found to be best correlated with coal rank parameter, R, max per centage. The use of staged combustion as a control strategy was shown to reduce their NOx levels by 56 - 77 per cent.

A study has been undertaken into mine ventilation systems currently in use within Australian modern coal longwall (LW) extraction mines. It reviews systems and discusses evolving changes being adopted to address the more complex challenges. There is a strong move to longer panels, wider faces, greater extraction heights, increased production rates, more efficient ventilation and decreased personnel. Each of these changes is motivated by improvement in productivity and generally leads to cost reduction. In addition, mine workings are moving deeper, which results in increased ventilation control issues such as higher total and respirable dust levels, greater seam gas contents in parallel with lower in situ permeabilities, spontaneous combustion and heat management issues. A comprehensive database of Australian LW ventilation practice is analysed. Currently there are a variety of LW panel ventilation circuits used in Australian underground coal mines due to various combinations of seam characteristics, gas emission rates, spontaneous combustion, geological features and surface constraints. The main issues usually addressed in the designing and planning of ventilation circuits for LW panels are airway velocity, gas concentrations, LW cutting methods (eg Bi-di, Uni-di or half web), ventilation of control devices, pressure differentials and leakage paths and understanding gas concentrations across the length and width of the goaf. If the ventilation circuit can manage the applied contaminant load (gases, heat and dust) at an acceptable cost and circuit duty, then supplementary controls, such as gas drainage, refrigeration and dust sprays and scrubbers, may not be required. Hong Kong is one of the most rapidly developing cities in the world. With constant population growth and limited opportunities for space, the development of a fast and effective underground public transportation network is essential. Hong Kong’s Mass Transit Railway (MTR) Corporation is currently undertaking several large underground expansions to its existing network. Much of the excavation will be carried out using the drill and blast excavation method.Drill and blast excavation is common in Hong Kong and with the continued development of underground infrastructure the use of the drill and blast excavation method will increase. Although an effective method of excavation, the blasting vibrations caused during construction can have an adverse impact on surrounding structures and impose disruption on the local community.In order to minimise the risks associated with blasting vibrations, and to demonstrate that the impact on local stakeholders will remain within acceptable limits, it is generally necessary for a contractor to submit a blasting assessment report for approval by government authorities before blasting may commence.Continued increases in population density will force more infrastructure to be constructed underground. Tunnels and caverns are increasingly excavated in closer proximity to critical sensitive receivers. This leads to greater potential impacts on the community, tightening constraints on contractors and a higher level of confidence required for approval authorities. Finding a balance between the needs of the community and rising construction costs becomes more challenging.This paper presents a case study on how the blasting assessment report process has been successfully implemented for a major MTR project situated in a densely developed area of Hong Kong. Designing for early access to deep orebodies is an essential driver for improved project payback. Vertical shaft sinking techniques have been developed to allow concurrent mine level excavation while continuing to sink. Project cash flows can also be improved when simultaneously deepening existing shafts beneath operating hoisting systems. Further economic advantage has been realised through creative sinking sequencing in twin ventilation/service shaft projects. A fourth technique to reduce project schedules involves partial shaft barrel equipping allowing unrestricted access to construct stations and continue with level installations. This approach reduces interference with barrel sinking activities to insignificant proportions. This paper reviews how these approaches have added significant value to actual shaft sinking projects, as assessed from a contractorÆs perspective, and discusses some of the practical issues to be addressed when planning future projects. Designers need to take cognisance throughout all project engineering phases of the adage that you are only sinking when cleaning the face. Cleaning can only be sustained when there is sufficient hoisting capacity.

This paper explores the use of a Process Safety Management (PSM) system to manage risk in the mineral processing and metallurgical refining industries. Important elements of a PSM system are described. International regulations and non-regulatory guidelines covering PSM for high hazard industries are reviewed. Case studies of incidents in the mineral processing and metallurgical refining industries are presented to understand the lessons learned from failure to manage risks using a PSM system. Conclusions are drawn to adopt PSM in the minerals and metals processing industry as a tool for loss prevention and risk management.

Developments since 1959 in major excavators to meet the high outputs of overburden and coal under the changing nature of the Morwell Coal Deposits of the Latrobe Valley are described. Particular reference is made to investigations of designs of the bucket wheel head configurations for the digging of flat batters on high faces, and examples are given of the wide use ofmodelsin these studies.An explanation is given of considerations leading to selection of the Long Boom or the Compact type of bucket wheel excavator for various applications. The past decade has seen increasing manufacture in Australia of components for excavators and similar machines. The measures undertaken to integrate these components with those from overseas (Germany) are described. A section of the paper deals with advances in Electrical Engineering for large excavators in Australia and its interdependenee with mechanical design and construction. Finally, as an example of the versatility of the bucket wheel excavator a description is given of a recent application for the mining of mineral sands in Northern N.S.W.

The Olympic Dam deposit is truly a world-class IOCG-Ag deposit, the world’s fourth largest deposit of copper and the world’s largest known single uranium deposit. Traditional and non-traditional methods have been used to accurately model the geology and mineralisation of the Olympic Dam deposit. Conditional simulation models have long been used as the most robust method for estimating risk and uncertainty in mine planning decisions at other mines around Australia and the world. There are many challenges associated with simulating the Olympic Dam deposit at a selective mining unit size sufficient for underground mine planning purposes. These include the size of the deposit, resulting in hundreds of millions of grid blocks; the disseminated nature of the zoned sulfide mineralisation. And lastly the direct relationship of the relative abundances of the sulfide mineral species that are crucial to the Olympic Dam smelter performance. Several geostatistical techniques have been utilised in the workflow for the Olympic Dam Conditional Simulation model to address these challenges. The key techniques are: • Projection Pursuit Multivariate Transform to de-correlate the main elements before simulation. • Pluri-Gaussian implicit boundary simulation method to simulate the mineralisation domains. • Spectral simulation method of de-trended and de-correlated attributes with account of local varying variance. The resulting conditional simulation models have been validated against histograms, grade-tonnage curves, cross-plots and assessed for variogram reproduction. This paper presents how the final conditional simulation models compare to benchmarking models created using alternate estimation techniques of ordinary kriging and local uniform conditioning. It also presents a validation process using historical samples to test final estimate accuracy of the simulation models.

In the smelting section, flexible fuels such as coal or coke are used in place of heavy fuel oil in order to utilize energy sources more efficiently. Heat recovered from the off gas of the furnace has been converted by the waste heat boiler into steam, which is used for self power generation and for heating or maintaining various temperatures. The amount of the recovered steam in the smelter is currently increasing due to maximum utilization of powdered cokes. The heat source required to maintain the temperature of the electrolyte in the tank house is electric power and steam. However until recent year this steam was provided by its own heavy oil combustion type boiler in the tank house since the amount of steam consumed in heating the electrolyte is large. Though experimental work over the last few years has shown the advantages of reducing steam in the tank house by fully covering the cell, the implementation of the full cover can lead to other operating problems. However various improvements, mainly the covering of the cell with a simple device, have led to greatly reduced steam consumption. As a result, steam for the tank house is now provided by the waste heat boiler only bringing more efficient energy usage.
