The Mt Wright underground mine (MTW) is located near the town of Ravenswood in north Queensland and is operated by Carpentaria Gold – a wholly owned subsidiary of Resolute Mining Limited.The Mt Wright mine has gone through many stages, from the conception and implementation of the world first ‘sub-level shrinkage’ stoping (SLS) with continuous fill mining method in 2010, through to steady state production. These have been outlined in detail in papers presented by Mackay (2011) and Mackay, Long and Koen (2014) at previous Underground Operators Conferences.Since the last paper was presented, MTW has experienced significant change in two key areas.The first significant change was the discovery of a previously unknown hazard in the form of flat rilling events (FREs) from closed drawpoints (DPs). These events are believed to be unique to MTW and pose a significant risk to both the safety of personnel and the business as a whole. The paper will discuss this hazard and the evolution of the controls and practices that have been introduced to mitigate the risk posed by the identified hazards. The material involved in these events is extremely dry, fine and hot.The second significant change is an altered stress regime bought on in part by a change in the production front orientation and a general deterioration in ground conditions in some areas of the mine. This has caused some production interruptions at MTW. The second half of the paper will describe the challenges encountered, the mechanisms behind these challenges and the strategies implemented to safely return MTW production to planned levels.It is believed that other operations can learn from the issues mentioned above, and the paper has been written with this in mind.`CITATION:Long, S, Carnovale, D and Louwrens, L, 2017. With a worldwide growing population the demand for higher living standards, food and the development of new technology is rapidly rising. To allow for a continuous growth, larger quantities of minerals and raw materials are needed at a faster pace. Different methods have been developed to access or tap ore more quickly, such as improved drill and blast operations, mechanical mining methods using equipment such as roadheaders (RH), longwall miners and other technical equipment. Another possibility to access and develop mines faster is the use of a tunnel boring machine (TBM).The historical usage of TBMs is surprisingly long, but the opportunity for technology adoption by the majority of worldwide mining companies remains largely untapped. Dozens of full face TBMs have been used by mines around the world, including two that will begin operation soon in Australia. TBMs have been used to safely and rapidly gain access to the orebody, or to expand access to the orebody to increase output by running a TBM along the edge of the orebody for several kilometres. These machines have also been used for ventilation and for conveyor tunnels for ore removal. They have been used to quickly excavate long and winding declines giving access to an orebody at several levels in a short period of time.Tunnel boring technology can be used for mine declines, mine access tunnels and all sorts of different mine designs and set-ups. TBM technology simply needs to be adapted to the mine conditions and, if manufacturers are involved early on in the planning process for mine development, the operation can be very successful. In some cases, historically typical mine designs may need to be re-thought.One mine, the Stillwater Platinum mine in Nye, Montana, is currently employing its fourth TBM in 25 years. Two were used to create tunnels running alongside the orebody, rapidly expanding access to the orebody in many locations for increased output. Two were used to create parallel access tunnels to a mine expansion at the East Boulder orebody; one tunnel is for conveyor haulage and the other for vehicular access. TBMs have been employed successfully many times to rapidly drive vehicular decline tunnels to multiple mine levels, such as at the San Manuel – Magma Copper mine in the USA. While TBM technology may not seem to be optimal for every mine, these success stories show that the method can provide vast benefits for the right projects.Early use of TBMs in extremely hard rock metal mines, in the 1960s and 1970s, had limited success since performance was low. However there have been great improvements made over the years in the strength of rock which can be excavated by TBMs with high performance. Other important improvements involve the provision of a safe work environment, safely and rapidly supporting the rock and predicting geology ahead of the TBM.This paper will briefly note the more than 20 TBM mining projects and highlight some notable successes. It will then go on to give a status report on the two active TBM mining projects in Australia and the difference between a TBM operation versus other excavation methods such as drill and blast (D&B) or RH excavation.CITATION:Rauer, M, 2014. The Hunter Region, with a major part of the coal resources of New South Wales and a long history of coal mining, has experienced a rapid expansion of coal resource development in recent years. While there are inevitable conflicts between mining, urban development and related infrastructure, and between mining and other resources, the application of sound planning practices, and improved co-operation and co-ordination among the various parties, helps to reduce such conflicts. The planning process involves consideration of factors such as transport- ation (including port facilities), mine subsidence, provision for surface facilities, a,iC the need for buffer 'ones. In addition, provision must be made for urban expansion, often co-existing or in close proximity to present or future coal mining development. Approval of coal mining developments takes place within the legislative framework of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act, 1979 (EPA Act), the Coal Mining Act, 1973 (CM Act) and the Mining Act, 1973. Considerable effort has gone into stream- lining and co-ordinating the procedures under these Acts. The EPA Act provides for regional and local environmental plans, as well as a linked process of development control and environmental impact assessment. The CM Act provides for the grant of exploration and coal mining titles and mechanisms for the responsible management of Mining.

This paper describes work conducted as part of an overall research project that aims to identify current and emerging trends in the development of automation and remote mining technologies, and to provide an operator-centred perspective to the design and deployment of such systems. More specifically, this paper outlines a research and development process being constructed to examine the issues of the human skills and capabilities required to operate or maintain automated/remote controlled mobile mining equipment. A human factors approach presented here, where the focus is upon designing equipment interfaces to fit operators, rather than purely designing and deploying the equipment based on a technology-centred approach. However, the importance of training to help develop the required skills and capabilities is also emphasised.The work built on a full review of the literature about the effects of automation in mining and elsewhere, extensive interviews with different stakeholders in mining automation and recognised best practice regarding designing for the human element in automated systems. The human element research and development process proposed is in four stages, ranging from understanding the tasks involved in both manual and automated equipment operation through to user trials to ensure that the automated systems are acceptable to operators and are fit for purpose.It is outside the scope of the current paper to present the full data collection described by this four stage process, but an overview of what will be collected is presented. As such, this paper focuses on the broad methods being developed, rather than the specific results to be obtained. The ultimate objective is to apply a broad ‘technology assessment’ approach to the design, deployment and evaluation of automated mining technologies, in particular by considering the user-centred design implications of these technologies.

"Extensive literature surveys, research in the project environment and personal experiences both within and consulting to project teams have revealed some consistent ‘people factors’ that contribute most to ultimate project success. Outside of purely technical and business case issues, there are a small number of leadership characteristics – probably only ten – that if correctly applied can positively leverage a team’s impact on project success.Of the top seven project success characteristics that were consistently highly rated in a recent study, five of them were around leadership. The authors have focused on this topic, noting that good leaders need to display the following traits:passionate commitment to deliveryconsistent modelling and reinforcement of correct values and behaviourfocus on managing relationships well and energising teams and individualscarefully clarifying project vision from front-end loading stages onwardseffective decision making.Not every project manager can and does practise these behaviours all of the time, but being aware of them and receiving training or facilitation in improving their application of these skills can equip project managers with the essential tools to markedly improve their own performance and that of their teams.This paper draws upon experiences in the field and provides lessons – both good and bad – to illustrate. As well as examining leadership traits, the way in which a leader can establish, organise, motivate his or her team and ultimately lead them to success is examined. THE problem of satisfactorily eliminating the fumes and dust which are unavoidably produced in various metallurgical and manufacturing industries is one which has received considerable attention in the past, and has been the subject of much investigation and research. The solution of this problem was urgently desired for two reasons, the principal one being the fact that a considerable percentage of the total process losses in many industries was represented by the commercial values of the fumes and dust that escaped from the stack.The other reason is that, in some instances, the emission of the matter is regarded as objectionable. Various methods have been designed with a view to solving the problem thus presented, and the latest development that has beendesigned is the process of electrostatic precipitation. Continued investigational and developmental work with this process has already demonstrated its applicability to many industries, and new uses to which the process can be put are being opened up. Its use is already widespread, and the economic success that has attended its application in most instances would indicate that its use will become more general in the future.It has proved its ability to treat gases over wide ranges of temperature, and has successfully handled various types of fumes whose chemical characteristics differ very considerably. In many processes it has now come to be regarded as standard equipment.HISTORY OF ELECTRICAL PRECIPITATIONThe first recorded observations on the influence of an electrified insulated wire on gases containing solid particles in suspension was made as early as 1824 by Hohlfeld, in Leipzig. He found that, if he electrified a wire hung in a bottle filled with smoke, the smoke cleared rapidly, and a deposit formed on the sides and bottom of the bottle.

GoldcorpÆs Musselwhite mine in north-western Ontario, Canada has in recent years become a world-class deposit. Initially discovered in the early 1960s by Alan and Harold Musselwhite, the then marginal mine eventually started production in 1997 and has to date produced 2.6 Moz of gold. Two million ounces of gold are currently classified as Mineral Reserve and a further 1.2 Moz of gold are classified in the Mineral Resource category for a total gold inventory approaching 6 Moz. Growth of the mineral inventory has been achieved through the successful implementation of strategic planning that sought to extend the mine life through discovery of additional economic zones and increased mined tonnages. Accelerated exploration activity commenced in 2001, at a time when gold price was at its lowest in decades. Focus was placed on building, developing and retaining a highly skilled geological team, maintaining purpose, conducting external reviews and developing a new geological model through research partnerships. Ongoing collaborative research between Lakehead University and Musselwhite mine has seen the development of new structural and geological models through post-graduate and academic studies. Research has included lithogeochemical, stable isotope and structural and metamorphic studies and has led to the evolution of a new mineralisation model (for the mine) and the recognition of brittle and ductile deformation regimes within the mineralised horizons. Exploration drilling continues to provide support for the new geologic model. Gold discoveries have extended known mineralisation 2.3 km along strike from mineral reserves and laterally into parallel zones. The exploration potential to further increase production rates, Mineral Reserves and Resources remains very positive and increases in overall gold inventory are likely. Musselwhite mine has significantly exceeded initial projections for a ten year life-of-mine and a marginal existence.

The suitability of magnetic surveys flown at low altitudes to identify buried heavy mineral (HM) strands has long been accepted. This is despite the low intensity magnetic response often obtained from such strands. The fundamentals of the magnetic survey method dictate that the closer the instrument is to the source the stronger the response. As such the optimal elevation for the magnetometer is at or near the surface. Iluka sought to use a ground based magnetometer to aid in the exploration target generation process and allow accurate targeting of exploration drill holes. Following the initial trial Iluka recognised the potential additional application of data obtained by a ground based magnetometer over known strand deposits. The detail of the ground magnetic images can confirm the assumed strand continuity between cross-sections of close spaced drilling and can aid in the definition of the geometry of different generations of mineralisation. The ability to confidently determine that the deposit has not been truncated by post emplacement erosion of the mineralised deposit may enable reductions in drilling requirements as well as assisting mine planning activities. Iluka intends to investigate advanced modelling of the magnetic data to determine the level of strand geometry and HM content resolution that can be achieved from the ground magnetic survey data and its potential application in the mining grade control process.It is anticipated that the surveying of Iluka’s known resource deposits will provide the ability to correlate the magnetic response from new exploration targets with those from known deposits for a given depth, HM grade and mineralogy suite.

In 2003, NEWMONT MINING CORPORATION, the worldÆs largest gold producer, set out to prove that High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) technology is sufficiently robust and reliable to be considered for the treatment of hard rock gold ores. In collaboration with POLYSIUS, a significant trial was conducted and 127 600 tonnes processed, successfully proving the HPGR capabilities on the Lone Tree Mine, Nevada ore û one of the most competent and abrasive ores in the industry. The success has led a number of mining companies to consider HPGRs for the comminution of gold and copper ores.

PT Freeport Indonesia is a copper-gold mine operation located in West Papua, Indonesia about 3500 km east of Jakarta. Current ore production is about 270 000 tpd, of which 30 000 tpd comes from underground. In the future, the production from underground will be gradually increased to reach a maximum of 115 000 tpd, as the Grasberg open pit production decreases. The current and future challenge for PT Freeport Indonesia is to fill the quota of underground miners, as Indonesia does not have a long culture of underground work. At present, there are only three active underground mines in Indonesia. The lack of underground skilled labour incited the company to develop its own skilled workforce. In the mean time, to overcome the shortage of personnel, the underground management had to find a way to improve the productivity. Since 21 May 1998, PT Freeport Indonesia Underground Mine has operated with the new roster of two rotating shifts a day, 11 hours per shift. The previous schedule consisted of three nine-hour shifts per day, six days a week, for a total of 26 working days in a month. This change was intended to increase the productivity of the miners. With the previous roster, studies determined that the effective working time was only seven hours per shift. The new roster produces an improvement of effective working hours to about nine hours per shift. As a result, total production has increased by 33 per cent and the utilisation of production equipment has increased by 16.5 per cent. This paper describes the background of the decision to change the work schedule, the study carried out to evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of the new shift roster, the challenges, and then compares the results for various parameters between the old schedule and the new one.

This work presents design features of an innovative in-line mixing helical (coiled) reactor for flocculation and flotation as a solid-liquid separation process for suspended particles (including liquid droplets). The device has been named flocs generator reactor (FGR), a compact system whereby the flocculation of particles is assisted by the kinetic energy transfer from the hydraulic flow through the reactor and/or by the injection of microbubbles (30 - 70 ¦m). The flow mixing presented a plug flow regime with a low dispersion degree, promoting the required hydrodynamic conditions to disperse the polymer flocculant (cationic polyacrylamide) and to generate æstrongÆ flocs of Fe(OH)3 or clays (as colloidal model systems) with aggregation using an anionic polymer, Al2(SO4)3 and poly aluminium chloride (PAC), and oil emulsions destabilisation with a high molecular weight cationic polymer. The solid-liquid separation of the flocs was then achieved either by settling or by flotation with microbubbles. This paper discusses advances in this new in-line flocculation-rapid flotation device to remove æaerated aggregatesÆ, aggregates with entrained and entrapped bubbles. Studies were carried out with different models of FGRs (varying the length:volume ratio) and process efficiency (mainly kinetics) evaluated as a function of polymer concentration and some operating parameters, namely, feed flow-rate, air:solids ratio and residence time. Results showed that the aerated flocs are readily floated with rising rates in the order of 120 mh-1, values higher than those obtained for the settling of the non-aerated flocs (18 - 24 mh-1). The FGR requires short residence times and generates dense, well structured flocs (with a mass fractal dimension, dF of about three) which withstand high shear forces. Mechanisms involved appear to include small bubble formation and their rapid occlusion (entrapment) within flocs, nucleation of bubbles at floc/water interfaces, polymer coiling as a result of æsalting outÆ effects at the aqueous/air interface and plug flow type of mixing (flocculation). Successful examples of emulsified oil and solids removal from water are shown and because in all cases high efficiencies were obtained (>90 per cent removal). Due to the high process efficiency and high loading capacity shown, the FGR appears to have good potential as an in-line flotation-separator device in applications requiring high rate solid-liquid or liquid-liquid separations.

A useful way to assess potential productivity of SLC mines is by quantifying tonnes/drawpoint/day to be extracted from the mine. However limited industry information has been published to help mines benchmark this number. This paper assesses industry data which can be used to support estimates of potential productivity from new mines based on tonnes/drawpoint/day. The information used has been extracted from historical production schedules which indicate what was achieved, rather than what was planned. It has been assessed using an algorithm created for the purpose and is presented with discussion of varying definitions of active drawpoints, analysis of the data and inquiry into some of the underlying contributing factors.

RME has a vision for a new grinding plant operational paradigm made possible by RMEÆs fast, safe Mill Relining System. Some new liner designs can degrade SAG mill performance because of mill volume loss, ball strike (rotational speed limitations) and other issues often brought about by modifying liner design for maximum life and without a backward glance at metallurgical consequences. Freshly relined mills can initially produce as little as 80 per cent of their maximum throughput, that maximum occurring toward the end of the linersÆ wear life. RMEÆs proposition is to see new liners designed for maximum commercial performance. This may mean more frequent mill relines but with liners designed to yield optimum grinding, metallurgical and profitability performance, not maximum life. In other words, mill liner profiles and mill relining speed become key operational controls and not simply æmust doÆ maintenance functions. Taken to the extreme, liner profiles may prove capable of ætuningÆ a grinding plant for maximum profitability in any metal price environment. Following the introduction, the first section of this paper provides an update describing recent and significant developments within RMEÆs range of Mill Relining Systems, the enabling technologies which permit more frequent liner exchange without incurring additional downtime imposts. The second section outlines RMEÆs vision of a æliner profile versus profitabilityÆ commercial model, developed either intuitively or by using a combination of new measurement and modelling technologies. These new measurement and modelling tools provide the opportunity to predict the optimum commercial outcome, off-line in the virtual world, before committing to an expensive liner experiment.

The carbon-in-pulp (CIP) process is now well established in the South African gold industry, with a total of over I million metric tons of material being treated each month in six large plants. This tonnage is derived from ground ore, from filtered pulp, from calcine, and from reclaimed sand-tailings dumps. With this new process and the new large plants, those concerned with CIP are experiencing a learning process, since each new plant presents a different set of problems to be overcome. The knowledge and experience gained from these plants is being shared, and will be of benefit in the design and operation of new plants. The CIP process can be subdivided into the following unit operations: prescreening at a fine size, adsorption, acid-washing and elution, reactivation, and electrowinning. Results concerning each of these unit operations, which were obtained from pilot plants and from large-scale CIP plants in South Africa, are presented. The latest developments in each of these areas is summarized. Tables that are included as an appendix contain some information concerning the equipment in these new CIP plants plus operating results from some plants.

In January 1998 Sydney Water Corporation formed an Alliance with construction contractor Transfield, and engineering consultants Connell Wagner and Montgomery Watson, to design and construct the Northside Storage Tunnel. The project is part of WaterPlan 21, Sydney WaterÆs strategy for cleaning up the harbours, bays, rivers and beaches within its business area. WaterPlan 21 is an integral part of the NSW GovernmentÆs $3.1 billion Waterways Package which establishes targets and initiatives for sustainable wastewater management within NSW. The project is being delivered under an Alliance Agreement, which has a number of non-traditional features in terms of partnering, management principles and design and construct. Construction began in mid-1998 and is on target to meet the completion deadline for the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

Attractive mining workplaces are good, safe and healthy environments. They are also workplaces that the workforce of the future wants to work in. As skilled miners and engineers are already scarce, this is important both for today and for the future. However, the future of mining will also be subject to increased international competition. In attempting to become more competitive, many mining companies turn to rationalisation, looking to both rationalise their production and organisation as well as optimise their processes. Work organisation is important in both rationalisation and providing attractive mining work. As a result, this paper investigates a ‘lean production’ (LP) philosophy for the organisation of future mines. The aim of the paper is to investigate to what extent LP can be used to organise for attractive mining. It first defines what attractive mining work is and to what degree it can be influenced by work organisation. A short insight into the LP concept will be given as well as a review of how it is discussed and utilised in mining today. All tunnels have unique characteristics that result in different fire and life safety risk. The fire safety systems for each tunnel also give different benefits at different costs. It is therefore neither pragmatic nor cost-effective to prescribe specific fire standards requirements for all tunnels. Each tunnel needs to be assessed individually but using a common process.The owner/client is normally the risk owner and needs to make the decision on what fire and life safety provisions will be provided within the tunnel. To make this decision they need to be appropriately informed. The low probability and high consequence nature of fire events creates a challenge such that traditional analysis processes, which tend to focus on a major event after it has happened, are not easily applied and do not give the best value for money. Therefore a process is required that provides the relevant information to the owner for decision-making.A quantitative risk assessment (QRA) provides a process and framework for the consideration of fire life safety risk when applied properly. This involves a risk assessment of the ‘do nothing’ option together with assessments of improvement options and their costs. It also involves consideration of benchmark safety levels for other tunnels and the open road.This paper will outline a QRA process for assessing fire and life safety risk in tunnels and how this has been used for three existing tunnels, Homer Tunnel, Lyttelton Tunnel and Mt Victoria Tunnel. Key challenges include determining an acceptable safety level, defining realistic inputs, providing sufficient complexity to get meaningful results but not so complex that transparency is lost and interpretation to enable decision-making by non-technical personnel.CITATION:Weaver, S, Wright, B and Ireland, T, 2014. Froth flotation is widely used for the separation of particulate materials in the world. It is a complex process whose operational behaviour in process plants is difficult to predict. A comprehensive phenomenological dynamic flotation model was presented at the 1982 IMPC. This model uniquely linked the particle/bubble interactions and water transport phenomena to the flotation cell hydrodynamics. The model was used as a dynamic framework to analyse and develop process optimisation strategies. New developments in mineralogical characterisation, real time information management systems and data validation simplify the implementation of flotation technologies for mine to mill grade recovery optimisation. With recent developments in software programming, dynamic simulation enables process engineers to develop process alternatives interactively. This paper presents such an implementation of current process analysis tools and an updated froth flotation dynamic model. It demonstrates how this new environment can be used to improve our technological knowledge of flotation, eg alternative bubble/particle attachment and detachment microprocesses can be incorporated. The dynamic flotation model has several manipulated variables (such as feed flow rate, per cent solids, aeration, wash water flow rate, frother flow rate, specific power energy (impeller speed/delta pressure), cell geometry and tails flow rate) and evaluates the dynamic effects of these variables on grade and recovery.

Production from a major, deep orebody requires the construction of two 6 m diameter, 1000 m deep ventilation shafts over the next three years. Further ventilation upgrades have foreshadowed an additional 1500 m of 6 m diameter shafts beyond that. After reviewing the construction alternatives it was decided to raisebore the first shaft in one pass using Western Mining Corporation's 121R raiseborer and the Wirth sequential head. The significant cost and speed of construction potential of 6 m raiseboring justified the risks associated with this new technology. Large diameter sequential head raiseboring has only been carried out in South Africa. Over the last three years many lessons have been learnt and the technology has progressed to being considered feasible. Operating practice and the optimisation of raiseboring performance for specific ground conditions are the areas requiring further work. The development of large diameter raiseboring in South Africa and the site preparation and initial operation at Z.C. Mines are described. Comment on actual operating experience includes the geotechnical investigations, the raiseborer foundations, cuttings disposal and the drilling of the pilot hole which has progressed to beyond 450 m. Unforeseen difficulties with the verticality of the pilot hole and with mud losses illustrate the types of problems that can be expected.
