The Morning Star diorite dyke has been subjected to two periods of mineralization. The earlier, genetically related to the dyke magma, gave rise to a weak chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-pentlandite-gold mineralization in a narrow zone, up to 25 cm. wide, which parallelsthe nearby western (hanging) wall of the dyke. Subsequently a set of conjugate shears formed in the dyke as a result of tectonic movements. Gold-quartz veins formed in these shears giving rise to the classical "ladder veins" of the Morning Star mine. On either side of the veins ("floors") the diorite has been bleached for up to 3 ft. This involved introduction of much CO. and some K"O, and S with abstraction of SiO. and FeO, giving rise to carbonates, sericite, zoisite and pyrite. The veins consist of quartz with minor amounts of albite and carbonate, together with pyrite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, tetrahedrite, galena, bournonite, boulangerite and gold. Spectrographic analyses of gold show that the suite of trace elements is consistent throughout the mine.INTRODUCTIONThe gold-quartz veins of the Morning Star Gold Mine, at Wood's Point, Victoria, are a classic example of the "ladder vein" type of deposit. The structure of this series of repeating quartz veins or "floors", some barren and some productive, occurring in a set of conjugate shears which transect a "dyke bulge" of diorite (Fig. 1), has been described on numerous occasions as mining has progressed and figures in the textbooks (Whitelaw, 1905; 1916; Junner, 1920; Lindgren, 1933; McKinstry, 1935; 1942; 1949; Kenny, 1949; Hills, 1952; Clappison, 1953) ; but there has been no study of the mineralization apart from that in Junner's (1920) general study of the Walhalla-Wood's Point Goldfield, made at a time when mining had not developed below the 400 ft. level,. and the mine was dormant.

I have headed this paper with a question and for the impatient among you ûthe answer is no we have not run out of developments but, and it is a big æbutÆ, we need to be innovative and ahead of the game or ænoÆ will be æyesÆ before we know it.Why do I believe that our future lies in innovation? Thirty years ago, knowledge doubled every 14 years. It is now doubling every seven years. In 1965, Gordon Moore, one of the founders of the chip maker Intel, made an observation that growth in memory chip performance is doubled every 18 months which became known as MooreÆs Law. Now there is fibre law, where the transmission line capacity doubles every nine months and storage capacity, under disc law, doubles every 12 months. What does this mean? Well, firstly there is a massive rise in information flow and availability with no limits in growth for at least the next ten years. Secondly, unlike our grandfathers, we are most unlikely to be employed by the same firm for our working career - we may not even have the choice to stay with the same company. In a phenomenon Richard Foster and Sarah Kaplan (2001), borrowing from Schumpeter, termed æcreative destructionÆ, companies are unable to sustain market-beating levels of performance for more than ten to 15 years. In the 1920s the turnover rate of companies in the United States was 1.5 per cent, so a company could employ almost three generations from the one family. A company had a half life of 60 years. In other words, you could well be in the same working environment as your grandparents. Today the churn rate is estimated to be eight to ten per cent. A company has a half life of five to six years. So for large companies, as an employer or employee or as a contractor, your working environment has a 50 per cent chance of changing in five years. Innovation is the driver of this rapid rate of change. Innovation is not for the faint hearted (Cutler, 2001) but it is the core for success in the global economy. The rate of change in our world is not going to decrease. We must learn, not only to manage change, but to enjoy the process of changing û to ride the tsunami of the knowledge economy.

The state of sampling practice in South African minerals industry must be appreciated in the context of the changes that the country has recently lived through. These include the entrepreneurship and investment in local mineral developments, the 'unbundling of mineral assets', the rising foreign control of South Africa's mineral assets, developments in the regulatory environment, and the training that has come to the industry through international experts. In terms of their financial contribution the five most important commodities in the South African mining industry include gold, platinum, non-ferrous metals, ferrous metals, and coal. International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards form the basis for international trade in two of these commodities and have had a steadying influence on sampling practice over the years. The contribution of the minerals industry to the economic well-being of South Africa and the strong financial links between good sampling practice and minerals marketing, has acted as a driver for improved sampling practice. The state of sampling practice at mining operations of the five main commodities was found to be quite widely divergent with 'pockets of sampling excellence' in each of the commodities. The stages of mineral development at mines for each of the commodities have been described in terms of the sampling sites, sampling mechanisms, and associated problems at different stages of mineral production from exploration, through face sampling, blasthole sampling, and in-mine grade control, ore processing and handling, metallurgical subsampling, process subsampling, and subsampling in the laboratory. In each case the principal errors were identified and their potential impact on value erosion was estimated. In the final analysis it is evident that the greatest problems arise in the early stage of mineral development, and that ferrous metals and coal are particularly susceptible to loss of value through poor sampling practice. Several examples of value lost through poor sampling at the marketing stage that arise from breaching contract specifications, either in terms of grade or sizing, are described. The conclusion is that larger companies with larger ore deposits and greater human, financial, and capital resources are probably more compliant with 'best sampling practice' than smaller companies. Finally the message that equipment suppliers are sending is that business is booming and the awakened awareness of the issues around sampling practice are translating into rands and cents spent on improved sampling equipment.

Project-finance risk assessment is mature and approached systematically. Mining industry due diligence remains fragmented with specialists addressing different aspects of the project such as reserves/JORC, environmental impact, commodity market, even financial analysis/ modelling. Each professional has a natural tendency to believe that the risk factors they have examined are the key ones necessary to be reviewed, as if their review will stand in isolation from others in the way a project materialises. By first laying out the project risk categories and risk matrices, this paper examines the due diligence process with a keen eye to the risk assessment and overlap/interaction. Some cross fertilisation of due diligence techniques from other industry sectors is placed into the mining context. Six case studies are then presented with regards to due diligence features in each projectÆs feasibility review or financial information/ offering memorandum. A power case first shows the differences between the due diligence expectations of banks versus bond financings. Then some Australian and Indonesian mining development cases are analysed to see the due diligence learning points. Some of these were project/due diligence failures. The conclusion focuses on the value of a systematic risk assessment for project evaluation, all from the project-finance perspective.

Safety remains a critical priority for the Australian mineral resource industry and will receive increased focus in the future. This is particularly evident in underground coal mines where reserves are becoming deeper and more hazardous to extract. The CSIRO, through its Exploration and Mining Division, have recently delivered on two projects aimed at providing step-change capabilities in real-time risk management and hazard control. This paper describes the key outcomes of these projects.

In the early-1990s, Tad Golosinski, the former the head of mining department at WASM participated in a review mining engineering courses in Australia. The review team asked various industry executives what subjects they thought graduates needed to be taught. Tad made the comment to me that the more senior executives thought that history and ethics were very important. The outcome was that the mining engineering courses were required to contain at least five per cent content dealing in ethics. The course was to be modified to reflect this. Tad thought at the time the students would think that subjects dealing in history and ethics came from retirees and professionals that were over the hill. So let me talk to you today about ethics.

Underground contractors in the mining industry must be prepared to take a position at the forefront of innovation of equipment and work methods in order to maintain a competitive advantage over in-house operations and remain relevant. Innovative concepts such as split-feed development jumbos, high capacity trucks and loader guidance systems were implemented by contractors to stay ahead of ‘the pack’. All of these are now common across the industry.The demands of regular participation in competitive tendering coupled with aggressive fleet depreciation, means contractors tend to have more communication and opportunities to work with equipment suppliers than mine owners. Therefore, they are more likely to influence equipment design and product directions. They also have a unique opportunity to assist in trialling new concepts and technologies across a wide variety of operating conditions rather than being restricted to one mine.In addition, as a ‘guest’ on a mine site, mining contractors do not have the luxury of creating the environment for their preferred systems, rather they must have the capacity to adapt their technology to suit the offered environment at a particular mine. This leads to a pursuit of adaptive technologies that can be implemented selectively and seamlessly without excessive disturbance rather than ‘all-of-mine’ systems. These incremental innovations then become available for use across the mining industry where they can add value as ‘bolt-on systems’ to existing operations.Mining contractors, therefore, act as the bellwether for industry practices and equipment. However, in order to maintain their position they must engage industry stakeholders to deliver practical, innovative and cost-effective technologies that add value and result in an improved bottom line for all. The El Salvador porphyry Cu deposit (26¦ 15Æ Lat S, ~2700 masl) and associated exotic mineralisation is situated at the back-scarp of the late middle Miocene Atacama pediplain in the western Precordillera. New, together with published 40Ar-39Ar data from El Salvador combined with morphologic analysis reveal that the palaeospring plumbing system related to exotic mineralisation at the Damiana exotic Cu deposit and the local geomorphology has not changed fundamentally between the late Eocene and late Miocene. Stable H/D isotope data on supergene alunite from El Salvador indicate an overall increase in dD values (VSMOW) from -74ë at 35.82 ¦ 0.95 Ma to -23ë at ~11 Ma. The transition from strongly to moderately negative deuterium values occurred between ~16 and ~13.5 Ma. Supergene alunite from the El Hueso (3950 masl) sedimentary rock-hosted epithermal deposit ca 35 km SE from El Salvador was dated at 8.19 ¦ 0.01 Ma and yielded a dD value of -25ë. We interpret the increasing deuterium excess as the result of strong evaporation and recycling of meteoric water after ~15 Ma and as indicative for a change in precipitation patterns and climate desiccation. In contrast, the strongly negative dD value for late Eocene supergene alunite points to a more humid climate and an elevation similar to the present. The late Miocene supergene activity at El Hueso is probably related to an uplift of the Precordillera to elevations sufficient for capture of orographically controlled precipitation. The Mount Carlton project in Queensland's North East sits on a high-sulphidation epithermal style deposit rich in gold, copper and silver. Mt Carlton is an open pit mining operation with ore processed using a primary crusher, single stage SAG mill and flotation to produce a concentrate for sale. Orway Mineral Consultants (OMC) was involved in the original design of the comminution circuit and the project was commissioned in late 2012, with first concentrate shipped in March 2013. When Evolution sought to optimise the project in 2015, OMC was invited to assist by undertaking a circuit review to identify opportunities for the optimisation. During 2016, the Mt Carlton site team implemented the optimisation strategies developed in conjunction with OMC. These included reconfiguring the SAG mill discharge arrangement, reducing the average ball diameter and allowing the mill to operate at higher speed and under more autogenous conditions. Cyclone operation was changed to constant pressure and the vortex finder size was decreased. The combined strategies improved energy efficiency and allowed higher SAG mill power utilisation. The additional power has been used to increase throughput by 2.4 per cent while achieving a 27µm reduction in product size (P80) to gain downstream recovery improvements. The reduction in grind size has been achieved with only 6.8 per cent increase in specific energy consumption because of a 6.5 per cent increase in grinding efficiency. The circuit product size is also notably more consistent due to the improvements made to the cyclones, providing benefit to the downstream flotation circuit. A significant decrease in ball consumption was also gained, saving hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in operating cost.This paper will discuss the circuit design, start up and will detail the changes made during the optimisation and why these were successful.CITATION:Putland, B, Lovatt, I, Cervillin, A and Schwann, D, 2018. The bulk of Australia's uranium resour- ces was delineated in the last 18 years when a total of $563 million (1984 dollar values) was spent on uranium exploration. Australia's share of the low-cost Reasonably Assured Re- sources in the World Outside the Centrally Planned Economies Area (WOCA) increased from 1.5% in 1967 to 29% by the end of 1984 and its share of the low-cost Estimated Additional Resources (Category I) then stood at 25%. As of December 1984, Australia's uranium resour- ces were estimated by the BMR to be: Cost range US$80/kg U (US$30/lb U301) Reasonably Assured Resources 463 000 t U Estimated Additional Resources(I) 251 000 t U Cost range US$80-130/kg U (US$30-50/lb U308) Reasonably Assured Resources 63 000 t U Estimated Additional Resources(I) 126 000 t U The increases in Australia's resources was sustained by a group of large and rela- tively high-grade deposits which were disco- vered during the period 1969 to 1975. Austra- lia's share of the low-cost resources was also enhanced by a contraction of WOCA's low-cost resource base due to escalation of production costs for smaller low-grade deposits. Most of Australia's uranium resources are contained in the Proterozoic unconformity- type deposits of the Alligator Rivers uranium field and the stratabound deposit at Olympic Dam on the Stuart Shelf. Most of the remain- der of Australia's uranium resources is con- tained in calcrete-type deposits. Less than 10% of Australia's uranium resources are in sandstone-type deposits. Total Australian production to the end of 1984 amounted to 26 241 t U, representing 3.4% of WOCA's cumulative production. Aus- tralia's share of WOCA's annual production has steadily increased from 1.3% in 1977 to 11.2% in 1984 (4390 t U). The increases in Austra- lian production took place in the face of reductions of production in WOCA countries, principally the US, from a record level of 43 988 t U in 1980 to about 39 000 t U in 1984. New low-cost production centres, mainly in Australia and Canada, have partly compen- sated the decline in US production. The Department of Resources and Energy (1985) reported that Australian exports of yellowcake are expected to reach 10 000 t U308 (8480 t U) by 1993/94, representing an in- crease of about 13% oer annum.

The Ernest Henry Mine is currently a copper-gold open pit operation situated in north-west Queensland, Australia. It is owned and operated by Xstrata Copper with a current throughput of 11 million tonnes per annum; however, open pit operations are scheduled to cease in late 2011. The deposit dips at approximately 45¦ and extends for at least another 400 vertical metres below the final 530 m deep pit design. Resource drilling from 2002 until mid 2008 has enabled an Indicated Mineral Resource to be established to 1000 m below surface. Scoping and prefeasibility studies (PFS) have been completed toward determining if this resource is suitable for underground mining and a feasibility study is currently progressing with a sublevel caving (SLC) concept. This paper briefly describes the process by which the SLC method was selected, conclusions regarding the non-selected methods, and then discusses the optimisation process used to derive the mining plan. The key optimisation parameters include the production drive spacing, level spacing, draw strategy, cut-off grade and production rate. Key risks will then be assessed and economic sensitivities studied. Final sensitivities will use Monte Carlo simulations to improve the transparency of the projectÆs risk profile. The feasibility study (FS) began in March 2008 and this paper describes the main optimisation steps at the time of writing and outlines the plan for study completion through to March 2009.

Fiji is a developing nation that relies on economic opportunities and recently experienced increased interest in mining and mineral exploration that could potentially benefit the country. In order to understand the lack of, or failure of, past rehabilitation activity, this study applied risk-based approaches to identify the significance of activities or actions applicable to rehabilitation of post-mined land in Fiji. This involved the use of qualitative, semi-quantitative and quantitative risk methodologies, which allow assessment and evaluation of mechanisms of mining administration and practices, as well as rehabilitation methods and approaches that have been applied successfully to post-mined land in other countries with similar environmental and climatic conditions and social and regulatory environments to Fiji. The semi-quantitative risk-based technique followed an earlier approach applied for mine closure by Laurence (2006) and provided a systematic way to assess and evaluate rehabilitation issues that were identified on-site by assessors, who were able to estimate through expert judgement the likelihood and consequences based on conditions, situations observed and circumstances on-site. It demonstrated that experienced professionals could reproducibly score likelihood and consequence of selected items relevant to mine site rehabilitation, despite the wide-ranging issues identified during post mined land rehabilitation. The quantitative risk-based approach was adopted as a method to determine environmental bonds for mining projects using the assessment of consequences and likelihood results from the semi-quantitative approach, then incorporating unit cost of materials or activities for local conditions required to fully rehabilitate each issue at net present value. NEARLY all problems in mining engineering involve the transport and distribution of materials from place to place, and in general the most economically managed mines and plants are those in which the transport of materials has been carried out most efficiently. Of all these transport problems, the hoisting of ore out of the mine and the distribution of same to the various treatment works is perhaps one of the most important. The Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) schedule model is used for short- to medium-term planning and scheduling at the Fimiston Open Pit Mine (the Superpit). The model bridges the gap between grade control models, which are generated one to seven days prior to mining, and the annual Resource and Reserve model update that is used for budget and life-of-mine plans. The schedule model uses close-spaced grade control data (up to 20 000 m drilled each month) as well as resource definition drilling to estimate production volumes three to six months ahead of current mining. From this, a rolling 12 week mining and processing schedule is generated on a monthly basis. As the KCGM operation is mill and sulfur constrained, the schedule model needs to be an accurate predictor of ounces as well as tonnes, gold and sulfur grades. The process must also be time efficient in order to meet monthly planning and reporting deadlines. Due to the large amount of new data generated each month, model updates using conventional interpretation and estimation techniques have proven to be impractical and too time consuming. This work goes beyond the general perception of how the well-known mine to mill process can be applied, by applying deeper knowledge along the mining chain. Grade deportment and dilution are considered at the mining stage, and modelled with the new SMI blast movement simulator, linking with the block model data. Assessing the shift to a considerably more competent section of the orebody is quantified via substantial milling trials at standard and higher-intensity blasts. These were stockpiled for batch processing through the mill to ensure feed integrity. The trial work included operating the mill at widely different fillings to develop Grindcurve milling responses. Additionally, model informed process control is initiated via a mill prediction tool.It has been found that accounting for blast movement for the higher intensity blasts could generate additional value of around $1.5M per blast. With the high-intensity blast and changing mill control, the plant was easily able to exceed projected mill throughputs with the far more competent Pipeline ore. Strategies to shift the workload and debottleneck the milling circuit were proposed and proven during the milling trials, demonstrating an increase in throughput of 7 per cent despite running at a lower SAG mill speed, and potential of 16 per cent for increasing the SAG mill to standard operating speed. A number of process improvement opportunities have been identified to enhance current productivity and ensure long term capability to process the considerably more competent future ores. A 4-component model for settling slurry pipe flow has been previously described by Wilson et al (2006) and Sellgren et al (2014) to predict pipeline friction loss (hydraulic pressure gradient) over a range of slurry compositions: from fine to coarse particle size, narrow to broad particle size distribution, and low to high solids concentration. The method applies a weighted average of established pipeline models for various settling slurry flow regimes, according to the volume fraction of solids falling within the applicable size range for each model. Further development of the model was undertaken by Visintainer et al (2017a, 2017b), based on a comprehensive set of laboratory tests in 203 mm (8 inch) and 103 mm (4 inch) pipelines, and it was also adapted to the modelling of slurry pump performance derates. However, this work was all performed with solids having a specific gravity near 2.65, as is typical for many mineral processing and dredging applications. The goal of the present work is to test the applicability of these models for settling slurries having a higher solids specific gravity, as may often be seen in the mineral processing of iron ore deposits. To that end, a test program was carried out in a 103 mm (4 inch) pipe loop using various compositions of an iron ore product having a solids specific gravity of 4.75 and containing both coarse and fine solids. By screening and flushing operations, a range of particle size distributions were created having different proportions of the coarse and fine elements. In all, 19 tests were performed with d50 particle sizes ranging from 50 μm to 3.2 mm and delivered solids concentrations from 10 per cent to 43 per cent by volume. Particle size distributions varied from very narrow to very broad, with d85/d50 ratios ranging from 1.75 to 26. Pipeline pressure gradient and pump performance data were collected and used to test the applicability of the previously developed 4- component models and to propose improvements to the models for the handling of high-density solids.

The An Shan iron ore deposit is the biggest low-grade oxidised iron deposit in China. Over the past ten years, about 120 SLon verticalring-pulsating high gradient magnetic separators units have been installed in An Shan to process oxidised iron ore. This paper describes how several plants have upgraded their old technologies to new technologies with SLon magnetic separators as the key equipment for controlling tails grades, including using reverse flotation as the key technology for iron concentrate cleaning, These plants have been modernised with beneficial results at low cost.

Dissolution of non-metallic inclusions in the metallurgical slag is of vital importance for cleanliness control of the steel manufacturing. With the development of high temperature confocal laser scanning microscope (HT-CLSM), new insights have been obtained due to its in situ observation characteristics, higher resolution and precise control. However, HT-CLSM measurement has the limitation, eg the slag composition cannot include high amount of transition metal oxides. In addition, it is time consuming for the experimental procedure and not so simple to succeed for every measurement. It is known that digitalisation has made a significant progress in recent years. Machine learning (ML), a sub-domain of artificial intelligence (AI), is the key enabling technology for the digitalisation of the material science and industry. The database for ML model is collected using almost all available HT-CLSM experimental data and subsequently the established database is trained by different ML methods. Unseen data is used as the benchmark of the ML model. Al2O3 dissolution is the main process to be predicted in the current study. A good agreement between the HT-CLSM data and the ML model prediction results show the possibility to apply ML in process metallurgy.

As Australia’s mining industry painfully retrenches, mining executives and managers strive to remain viable by seeking significant productivity increases directly through process improvement and indirectly by improving leadership and workplace culture, the most powerful determinant of productivity. Culture is the combination of people’s attitudes and behaviour, together with leadership values and focus.Comprehensive new and automated data collection and management systems promise much for improving productivity, yet despite rapid advances in measurement and sharing of data, the use of data can reduce productivity unless behavioural aspects are considered and designed as part of implementation. This is because systems drive behaviour that in turn shapes attitudes to determine culture.Experience from many mine sites and other industries in three countries confirm that the most powerful drivers of people’s behaviour are the Measurement-Analysis-Reporting system and business leadership.This paper discusses fundamentals of practical, statistically valid process measurement, analysis and reporting systems before discussing associated leadership considerations for sustained improvement in safety, productivity, employee retention, leadership, accountability and commercial returns.The key to productivity improvement is improving core processes and important support processes. In turn, the key to process improvement is identifying the major process components and their interaction by measuring and then analysing their variation and level of performance. Understanding variation is often neglected yet is usually highly significant. It is essential that the fundamentals of statistically valid yet practical process and data analysis are understood and incorporated into system design to ensure productive, informed behaviour.The design and use of Measurement-Analysis-Reporting systems influences behaviour most profoundly and determines people’s effectiveness. Behavioural aspects are detailed by focusing on six primary drivers of human behaviour and five basic systems for managing businesses. These are integrated in a seven-step process and productivity improvement methodology that combines statistical, analytical, systems and behavioural factors.The paper includes development, implementation and tracking of a project plan for improving management and leadership systems to drive aligned behaviours.
