Late Cretaceous Blue Spur Conglomerate preserved as isolated remnants at Gabriels Gully, Weatherstones, Forsyth, Waitahuna Gully and Adams Flat was deposited during the intiation and early stages of extensional movement on the Tuapeka Fault zone at each locality. The deposits represent successive courses of a single fluvial system flowing across the Tuapeka Fault zone from the up-thrown (northeast) block. Each course, beginning with the channel at Gabriels Gully, was abandoned as a result of uplift-induced defeated antecedence in favour of a new course farther to the southeast around the southeast-propagating tip of the Tuapeka Fault zone. Schist and quartz in the conglomerate was derived ultimately from schistose rocks northeast of the Tuapeka Fault zone. Caples Terrane greywacke detritus in the middle and upper beds of the conglomerate was probably recycled from pre-existing sedimentary cover on the up-thrown block, following initiation of uplift on the Tuapeka Fault zone at each locality. Most of the gold is derived from vein sources in Otago Schist rocks to the north, and/or associated placers. Hydrothermal veins at Waipori, Hindon, Barewood, and Macraes are the most likely primary sources. There is no evidence to support previous interpretations of deposition by river systems flowing from the southwest, or axially along the Tuapeka Fault zone from northwest to southeast. High gold grades within Blue Spur Conglomerate should have a linear trend more or less similar to the orientation of the host channels, but are likely to drop off rapidly to the southwest. Extensions of the conglomerate-filled channels are unlikely to be preserved, but there is a strong probability that younger placers recycled from the former channels exist.

A pilot steel ladle injection facility designed to assist in the production of high quality steels suitable for use in pipelines has been built and commissioned at the Basic Oxygen Steelmaking (BOS) plant at Port Kembla Works.The plant design and the injection procedure are described.The performance of the unit and some metallurgical results are discussed in terms of the addition to the steel ladle of various quantities of calcium silicide and a lime based material. The effects of these additions on sulphur content and inclusion morphology and hence on steel ductility are also presented. The influence of ladle lining on desulphurisation is illustrated.On the basis of the experience gathered in the pilot plant a permanent and more sophisticated injection facility has been designed.

Alluvial gold is an ideal exploration tracer to bedrock source and indicator of bedrock mineralisation style because: (i) gold occurs in a wide range of deposit types, (ii) primary composition is sensitive to style of mineralisation, and (iii) it is a heavy resistate mineral that is readily preserved and easily sampled. In regional exploration of the Central Ranges of Irian Jaya, alluvial gold mineralogy has been applied to maximise the information return from panned concentrate sampling and to focus exploration effort. Primary gold is a solid solution of Au+Ag¦Cu¦Hg, ¦ trace Pd, Te, and Sb. In general Ag¦Hg increase and Cu decreases with inferred decreasing temperature of formation, and gold from particular mineralisation styles has signature compositions that can be used as indicators of bedrock mineralisation type. Furthermore, the abundance of alluvial gold is an indicator of the economic potential of a catchment. The convergent continental-oceanic plate geology of the Central Ranges is conducive to a wide range of mineralisation styles. Mineralogy of gold in ophiolite, skarn, porphyry, mesothermal vein and possible VHMS environments is characterised from alluvial and bedrock samples, and the use of gold mineralogy in prospecting at regional scale through prospect definition to drilling is demonstrated.

A slag-metal equilibrium study of the system SnO-FeO-(Si02+Al2O3)/Sn-Fe was carried out at 1250°C. The distribution coefficient, k =(Sn/Fe)metal X (Fe/Sn)slag was found to range from 246 for an iron contentof 0·53 per cenrt in the metal to 82 for an iron content of 6·4 per cent. The value of the ratio ?SnO/?FeO was calculated and found to be approximately a function of per cent SnO in slag alone in the region (Si02+Al2O3)/ FeO = 0·4 to 1·2. Comparison with other published work suggests that the addition of CaO to slags having (SiO2+Al203)/FeO ratios of about 1·1 raises the value of ?SnO/?FeO...

Some form of technical library is a necessity for every metallurgical plant, but its form and scope will vary with the conditions of each case. In its simplest form, it may consist of one or two mining journals and a few text books distributed amongst the staff. Again, it may be a separate establishment controlled by a clerk, the technical staff necessarily making its own research into the literature available. A still more elaborate organisation may be established both to supply information when requested and to keep the operating staff in touch with current matters of interest, and the library service of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia is of this character.The necessity for such a service is due to several facts. The Company's interests are scattered over three States. Most of its staff members are remote from: good public library facilities and they have few opportunities for exchanging ideas verbally with other metallurgists and engineers. Then, too, the process of recovering zinc by electrolysis, is a young art of which the physical and chemical bases were far from fully known at the time the: Risdon plant was established. Most of the zinc produced is sold abroad, and this unsheltered industry can afford to miss no technical or economic development which may promote its efficiency. Add to these facts the geographical isolation of the Commonwealth and the case for an adequate library is complete.

It is shown that a differential colorimetric technique can be used as a routine method for the estimation of titanium in beach sands, and their ore dressing products. The method will tolerate the presence of most of the other elements usually found in beach sands. The accuracy is shown to be within the limits of ±0ò31 per cent for concentrates containing more than 95 per cent titanium dioxide and ±1 per cent for tailings containing 0ò2 per cent titanium dioxide. The method is described for use with a Hilger "Spekker" absorptiometer.

The solvent extraction section of an old Uranium Plant in the Vaal River region (North West Province in South Africa) produced a substance called CRUD (Chalk River Unidentified Deposit) that formed within the aqueous/organic interface of the settler of the solvent extraction circuit. The CRUD was deposited together with gold tailings to the tailings dam many years ago. Previous research done on the CRUD confirmed that exposed CRUD leaches Mn and Ni at concentrations that are well above their acceptable risk limits as well as Zn that leaches at concentrations that are slightly lower than its acceptable risk limit. Soil washing and bioremediation technologies were employed to treat the contaminated soil.   Various laboratory test work and the pilot scale studies were conducted in parallel with each other and the results of the laboratory studies were used to determine critical parameters. Four lixiviants, ie sulfuric acid, acetic acid, oxalic acid and ethylene diamine acetic acid were tested at three concentration levels ie 0.001 M, 0.0001 M and 0.00001 M, respectively. Column tests showed that the leaching of the heavy metals increases as the soil porosity increases. Silica sand was added to increase porosity of the contaminated soil. Highest Mn removal was achieved mainly by sulfuric and oxalic acid at 0.001M at all soil levels. EDTA was significantly efficient in the removal of Ni and Zn. The recovery of heavy metals, particularly Mn, decreased as the depth of sampling increased.   Heterogeneous bacteria and filamentous organism plate counts were conducted to evaluate the growth of the bacteria and filamentous organisms in the soil. Results showed that more organism growth took place in the bioremediated soil with a fertilizer added to it. The leaching of metals from the soil that was bioremediated in the pilot study was generally higher than the extraction of the metals from the soil that was leached with no bioremediation carried out. The results from this study suggest that the leaching of heavy metals from the contaminated soil is to a large extent dependant on the pH of the leaching solution. By increasing the soil's porosity and bioremediating the soil, higher extractions of metals were achieved.

A way back in 1851-2 an army of diggers had commenced the conquest, of the now famous goldfields of Australasia. At that time, and in the Colony of Victoria, more that 10,000 were camped on and around the slopes of the silurian ridges over which Ballarat East h'as been built. A wonderfully rich golden harvest was soon gathered from the alluvial found high on these slopes, and from runs (or gutters) which got their rise on them, and were traced down gullies into a broad valley. In due course it was ascertained that the valley carried a main gutter which represented the unity of the higher ones, and further explorations proved this gutter to have a westerly and then a southerly trend toward and under a basaltic plateau, on the top ofwhich Ballarat West and Sebastopol now stand. In the records of alluvial gold mining all the world over the Ballarat field can be classed amongst the richest. Gold in pieces the size of beans, in, stringy filigree bits, in dust and in solid lumps (the largest of which weighed more than 2,200 ozs.), was obtained in the comparatively shallow ground on the slopes; and speaking generally, great and uniform richness was met with along a belt of country on which, in a north and south line, the present quartz mines of Ballarat East are at work. It was noticed by the diggers that when the gutters crossed the upturned edges of the ,strata, the gold deposits in them were patchy, and that when they trended north and south on this beltthey carried rich deposits for longer distances. In time it was also noticf!d that a class of stringy, irregular shaped quartz occurrences, in a bottom of soft slates, in the, immediate vicinity of tpe g)ltter, meant greater richness, and (in the aIluvial) on the higher ground slabs of quartz would now and then be met with, in which strings and spongy masses of gold were found. As the shallow alluvial became worked out the diggers turned their attention to the quartz occurrences, and, now and again the striking of a flat make of a very golden nature would cause quite a stir in the local mining world.

The discussion which followed the publication of my paper by the formert has, I think, enhanced its value. It may therefore be of interest to members of our Australasian Institute, who are not members of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, if I give a synopsis of the discussion.My attention was drawn to the fact that my paper did not make clear the extent of the improvement in furnace operations, which followed the use of coke of high quality; this comment applied more particularly to the lead content of slag. The following data cover a phase in the systematic testing of gold deposits which does not appear to have been specificalIy investigated.In boring either secondary or primary deposits, gold, by virtue of its high specific gravity, will tend to migrate downward, below the driving shoe or bit, and thus cause misinterpretation of value unless final recovery Can be effected after the hole has been bottomed.Unlike fortuitous and non-recurrent errors, due to, say, running ground, "pile driving" or rock fractures, systematic error due to migration may be unpredict.able from operating data alone, and, therefore, result in serious miscalculation of the weighted average upon which the engineer's recommendation is based.Applied to diamond drilling, loss by downward migration appears to have been largely responsible for distrust of sludge assays in the past. On the other hand, although modern practice rightly trends towards an integration of both core and sludge samples in borehole valuation, the possibility of systematic loss must be investigated when using combination graphs such as those of Longyear, Moehlman and WeIler. If the sludge value is incorrect the combination graphs will serve solely to stultify the core valuation.It appears to be axiomatic that: 1. With full core, sludge assays are of minor import.2. With recovery above 90%, differentjal grinding, of the high grade sections may have occurred, and this c!ln be corrected only by the us.e of cOJ;rect sludge valuation.3. With core recovery less than, say, 70%, no accurate valuation is possible without integrating the sludge assay.4. With less than, say, 10% core recovery, the sludge assay affords the sole basis of evaluating a borehole which may have cost many hundreds of pounds.The conditions demanded for reliable sludge valuation have, in practice, been restricted to high quantitative recovery and return of nearly 90% of the drill water. It is submitted, however, that the following additional knowledge is required:1. The nature of gold distribution in the ore.2. The lifting power of the return water column, which can be gauged by the maximum quartz particle, provided that the degree of "hindrance" can be determined.3. That all gold has been cleared from the bottom of the borehole immediately after it has passed through the orebody.The three cases discussed hereunder are offered not only as proof of the thesis, but also in the hope of promoting discussion on the interpretation of borehole values and on methods for saving free gold in the sludge. The fact that two of them cover alluvial boringand the third diamond drilling has resulted in this attempt to reduce the behaviour of free gold to a basis common to all types of boring.

The Waimumu area, 12 km southwest of Gore, is underlain by the Gore Lignite Measures, an early Tertiary fluvial sequence approximately 500 m thick resting on Triassic-Jurassic argillitic basement. The Waimumu Quartz Gravels (Pliocene) have been deposited locally and are in part due to the localised reworking of the Gore Lignite Measures. Structurally the area is dominated by the Dunsdale Fault System, a steeply dipping series of NE trending reverse faults (Isaac and Lindqvist, 1990). The Belle-Brook, Hedgehope and Parker Road sites sampled are adjacent to the downthrown (east) side of the Hedgehope Fault.The authigenic gold-sulphide association at Belle-Brook was discovered in 1987 (Falconer, 1987: Clough and Craw, 1989). Despite a very limited amount of alluvial mining a significant quantity of authigenic marcasite has developed. Authigenic sulphide trace element analysis has shown anomalous amounts of As, Ni, Cr and to a lesser extent Zn, Pb and eu (Table 1). It has been established that the nickel occurs as a colloform banded Ni sulphide, possibly bravoite, within the marcasite (Figures 1 & 2). Arsenic and nickel (re)mobilisation are well documented in the literature. Generally As and heavy metals are mobilised in the groundwater as a result of the oxidation of sulphides (ie as a result of mining). At Belle-Brook it is reasonable to assume the authigenic sulphide trace element composition reflects either localised groundwater contamination or hydrothermal mineralisation. This poster presents some preliminary findings.

I have spent most of the past 35 years working as an economic geologist in the area of exploration and development of base and precious metals. Most of this period has been as an employee of Trans-National-Corporations (TNC's). I presently act as a consulting geologist to a joint venture company, bringing together two such TNC's: Anglo American Corporation and affiliated companies De Beers (Diamonds) and Minorco (Metals mining outside of Southern Africa), and Normandy Mining Limited ofAustralia. Normandy is presently through its gold arm PosGold, Australia's largest gold miner and Anglo American can claim to be the world's largest gold company producing over 280 tonnes of gold a year, more than twice its nearest rival Gold Fields of South Africa. In addressing this topic, the role that Government can, and should play in mineral development, I will be drawing heavily on some examples from these and other TNC's experience in recent offshore mining investment.

Mesothermal gold deposits of southernAlaska and Westland, New Zealand have both formed at the seaward edge of major collisional zones in the Pacific basin. In Alaska, production of large fluid volumes correlates in time with the addition of heat into the lower parts of the accreted terranes in the late stages of collisional orogeny. This heat was critical for driving both the metamorphic reactions that released the large volumes of fluid that carried the gold, and the contemporaneous widespread anatexis and magmatism. In Alaska's Chugach terrane, this heat as produced by subduction of a spreading ridge beneath the North America continental margin in the Eocene. The resulting products were the S-type granites and gold-bearing veins. The similar widespread S-type plutonism and gold veining in Westland's Buller terrane suggest that a similar tectonic event could have triggered ore formation along the southeastern edge of Gondwanaland. Based on the Alaskan model, a Devonian or Early Carboniferous age is favoured for high volume metamorphogenic fluid generation and gold vein formation in Westland.

A recently developed technique for use in collieries is described in which samples of gas of relatively high vitiation value are obtained from points deep within a developing goaf by means of pipes. This technique prevents dilution of small quantities of carbon monoxide by large quantities of fresh ventilation air and eliminates interference from shotfiring gases. By using the technique it should be possible to assign a characteristic ratio of carbon monoxide to oxygen consumed to any district and to predict the onset of heatings.INTRODUCTIONGas analysis has played a vital role in detecting heatings in collieries all over the world. By analysing return air from a district and by calculating the percentage ratio of volume of carbon monoxide found to oxygen consumed (known simply as the "carbon monoxide ratio") it has been found possible, in many cases, to assign a characteristic ratio to a district under consideration. This characteristic ratio serves as an index of the spontan~ous combustion tendency of a goaf area. Any definite and consistent increase in the ratioabove the normal figure· indicates that a heating is developing and hence adequate preparations may be made to deal with the trouble.This ratio technique was developed by Graham (1920-21) who found (Table 1) that the temperature of oxidizing coal was directly related to the ratio obtained from analyses of the effluent gas.Until recently, most attempts to employ a similar technique in collieries working the Greta Seam (N.S.W.) were not successful. The phosphorus content of the banded iron formation (BIF) and of the associated iron ore deposits in the north west of Western Australia is known to vary widely, a fact which has considerable econ~mic significance. Trendall and Blockley (1970) have described the variety of textural appearances of apatite in the Hamersley Group BlF, and suggest that apatite may account for the entire phosphorus content of the unaltered BIF.A preliminary investigation using an M.A.C. electron microprobe analyser has shown that, at least in some iron ores and in partially enriched BIF and associated shales, the phosphorus occurrence is more complicated than this. A suite of samples was examined from one location which covered the entire Dales Gorge Member and some adjoining macrobands in the Mt. McRae shale, together with samples selected for their high phosphorus content, degree of ore enrichment, and position relative to the enrichment zone. Calcium apatite was not observed in any sample of ore from this sequence, despite its ubiquitous occurrence in the BIF. Silicate mineralogy in the enriched regions also differs from that in the BIF, but this change has not yet been studied in detail.The phosphorus content of goethite in one orebody is often high and appears to be in solid solution in the goethite structure. It shows little or no variability on a micro-scale within a grain, except where theremay be a zoned enrichment near boundaries and solution channels. There is also a limited solubility of phosphorus in hematite (the maximum observed by the author is 0·1 per cent P); but where the hematite is martitic (after magnetite) its phosphorus content is always low or zero. In some bands, martitic hematite has been hydrated to goethite, and this also has a very low phosphorus content. Phosphorus was not found in the silica or silicates in the ore, and even when iron enrichment is just beginning, a limited suite of samples from the BIF suggests that the phosphorus content of the chert microbands is almost entirely in the microscopic goethite nuclei (after riebeckite) scattered throughout the chert. Bio-Oxidation of Arsenic and Stibium Bearing Gold Ores Bio-oxidation of arsenic and stibium bearing gold ores with acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans was studied. The preoxidation results show that the best bio-oxidation technical parameters are the initial pH in the range of 1.8 ~ 2.0, particle sizes under 0.074 mm, temperature in the range of 25¦C ~ 30¦C and rotating speed of the orbital incubator in 100 rpm ~ 160 rpm. The leaching results show that If the ore, of which contain 10.37 per cent arsenic and 36.81 per cent stibium, is not bio-oxidised, gold leaching is only about 41 per cent, after 8 days oxidised, the result is about 76.55 per cent, which improved about 35.62 points. The relationship between gold leaching and arsenic oxidation is direct proportion, furthermore, it needs only partly oxidise and higher gold leaching could be get, for example, gold leaching is over 90 per cent when asenic oxidation is 60 per cent. The results will provide theoretical and technological supports of bio-oxidation arsenopyrite for pretreating refractory gold ores.
