Amphiboles are hydrated mineral silicates five of which occur in asbestiform habits as asbestos grunerite (amosite) asbestos, riebeckite (crocidolite) asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, tremolite asbestos and actinolite asbestos] and non-asbestiform habits (grunerite, riebeckite, anthophyllite, tremolite and actinolite). The asbestiform varieties are characterized by long, thin fibers while non-asbestiform varieties such as cleavage fragments form short fibers with larger widths. The U.S. regulatory method for counting asbestos fibers (aspect ratio [>]3:1, length [>]5 µm) does not distinguish between asbestos and cleavage fragments. The method biases toward increased counts of non-asbestiform cleavage fragments compared to long, thin asbestos fibers. One consequence of this regulatory approach is that workers can be erroneously classified as exposed to concentrations of asbestos (asbestiform amphiboles) above the U.S. 0.1 f/mL exposure standard when in fact they are not exposed to asbestos at all but non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments. Another consequence is that the known carcinogenic effects of asbestos may be falsely attributed to non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments of the same mineral. The purpose of this review is to assess whether amphibole cleavage fragments pose the same risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma characteristic of amphibole asbestos fibers. We identified three groups of workers exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles: two groups exposed to grunerite (Homestake gold miners and taconite miners) and one group exposed to industrial talc containing non-asbestiform tremolite and anthophyllite in St. Lawrence County, NY. In addition to assessing strength of association and exposure?response trends in the non-asbestiform amphibole cohorts, comparisons were also made with cohorts exposed to the asbestiform counterpart (positive control) and cohorts exposed to the mineral (e.g. talc) that does not contain amphiboles (negative controls). The cohorts exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles had no excesses of lung cancer or mesothelioma. Similar results were observed in the negative control groups, in stark contrast to the excess risks of asbestos-related disease found in the asbestos cohorts. The only possible exception is the twofold increased risk of lung cancer where exposure was to industrial talc containing cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite. However, this risk is not considered attributable to the talc or amphibole cleavage fragments for several reasons. A similar increased risk of lung cancer was found in Vermont talc workers, studied in the same time period. Their exposure was to relatively pure talc. There was no relationship between lung cancer mortality and exposure measured as mg/m3 years and years worked. A case?control study reported that all the lung cancer cases were smokers (or former smokers) and attributed the excess to smoking. There were two mesothelioma cases among the NY State talc workers exposed to cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite, but talc is not a plausible cause because of too short latency and potential for previous asbestos exposure. The positive controls of tremolite asbestos and anthophyllite asbestos exposed workers showed excess risks of both lung cancer and mesothelioma and positive exposure? response trends. St. Lawrence, NY talc does not produce mesotheliomas in animals while amphibole asbestos does. In sum, the weight of evidence fully supports a conclusion that non-asbestiform amphiboles do not increase the risk of lung cancer or mesothelioma. ©2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. To achieve safe and healthy working conditions in shaft sinking operations, ventilation, and where necessary cooling, must be provided. These requirements are considered for sinking vertical, sub-vertical and decline shafts. Regulatory requirements, determining air volumes and amount of cooling required, the various ventilation methods used such as force, exhaust, twin columns, air reversal using four gate systems and the equipment required to achieve this, are discussed. Consideration is also given to the sinking of single and twin declines using diesel equipment, calculating the air volumes required to dilute pollutants and the various methods for achieving this. Also discussed is the importance of having early ventilation design input to the overall design of the mine. In many cases ventilation can be the prime determinant for the size and configuration of the shafts or declines that have to be sunk.

The development of a process for upgrading offgrade titanium metal by electrorefining in molten salt led to an investigation of the electrotransfer characteristics of selected metals when alloyed with the titanium to be refined. Previous tests on seven binary titanium alloys showed that the degree of transfer of the alloying constituent depends on the constituent and on the operating procedurese.5 This report describes tests on electrorefining ternary mixtures of titanium with selected metallic elements. Ten alloys were prepared from high purity titanium and 2-1/2 percent of each of the metal pairs selected from the same elements used in the binary study; manganese, vanadium, chromium, zirconium, tin, molybdenum, aluminum. Operating variables were similar to those investigated in the binary alloy study that gave minimum alloy metal transfer. The data presented indicate the transfer characteristics of the various metals and combinations tested relative to each other.

Sishen Iron Ore Mine is situated 280 km north-west of Kimberley in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. The mine produces and sells high quality iron ore of various specifications to various national and international clients. The saleable product is derived from the blending and beneficiation of different types and qualities of hematite iron ore. This paper documents the new developments which were implemented (or are in the process of being implemented) on the mine in the long-term planning, medium-term planning, grade control and material tracking in the beneficiation plant with special attention being paid to the quality of the final, saleable product. The process starts with the long-term planning where the pit shell and pit optimization is determined by Whittle 4X. New developments include the introduction of a linear programming based scheduling system to enhance the long-term schedule generated by Whittle 4X. The LP route was decided on in order to take into account all the constraining factors of the final product that could not be configured in Whittle. To complement this the XPAC Auto Scheduler scheduling package was introduced to do the medium-term mine scheduling. This 18-month rolling plan includes cost parameters to enable the planner to extract a detailed operational budget from the scheduling while ensuring that production standards are maintained and grade constraints are met. The existing grade control system was enhanced with GPS capabilities and a computer system to do material tracking. The high precision GPS system introduced on the shovels allows for the accurate control of the loading procedures at the mining face. Because of the complicated geology and grade composition of blasting blocks it is imperative to accurately differentiate between different materials in the same blasting block and being able to excavate that with the loading equipment. The GPS system on the trucks allows for accurate location monitoring of dumping in order to keep track of specific material types. The state-of-the-art material tracking system developed for Sishen will enable the grade control officer to keep track and record various parameters of the material from its in situ position in the blasting blocks, through the crusher and onto different stockpiles, in various stages of the beneficiation process and onto the blending beds, into the dispatching trains and eventually into the ships for international distribution. These developments elevate the Sishen planning and grade control systems to a new level of service excellence from which management can obtain accurate and timely information on product status. It also enables Sishen to maximize resource utilization while still complying with the tough market constraints.

This paper forms the second of a series, in which it is proposed to communicate the results of an extensive research into the influence of alloying elements on the physical properties of lead, now being carried out in the Metallurgy School of the University of Melbourne.Some general comments on this research were made by the present writer as an introduction to the first contribution by R. S. Russell*: It was there pointed out that it was the intention to prepare lead as pure as possible, to determine its properties and then to make alloys with the various elements added singly, and in various combinations, in order to determine the effect of each. This line of action is still being pursued.It occurred to the writer, however, that this fundamental attack might, with advantage, be accompanied by a parallel investigation in which lead of commercial purity would form the basis material. Within the metal/nonmetal mining sector, fall-related incidents account for a large proportion of fatal and non-fatal injuries. However, the events and contributing factors leading up to these incidents have not been fully investigated. To help provide a clearer picture of these factors, an analysis of imminent danger orders issued by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) between 2010 and 2017 at both surface and underground metal/nonmetal mine sites revealed that most orders are associated with fall risks. Of these cases, 84% involved the workers not using fall protection, fall protection not being provided, or the improper use of fall protection. Fall risks for workers most frequently occurred when standing on mobile equipment, performing maintenance and repairs on plant equipment, or working near highwalls. In most cases, a single, basic, corrective action (e.g., using fall protection) would have allowed workers to perform the task safely. Overall, these findings suggest that a systematic approach is needed to identify, eliminate, and prevent imminent danger situations. Furthermore, to protect mineworkers from falls from height, frequently performed tasks requiring fall protection should be redesigned to eliminate the reliance on personal fall protection.

Environmental constraints are pushing many operators to change from large rotary blastholes to the smaller diameter holes drilled with down-hole or top-hammer rigs. Productivity improvements over the years with these two drilling techniques has taken some of the bite out of the transition, while improved fragmentation and more uniform muck due to the tighter patterns can help offset increased explosives costs.

In exploiting the ultra-deep, narrow reef ore bodies of the Witwatersrand, the ventilation and cooling systems within the stopes play a critical role because of high concentrations of active workers. This paper examines the heat, ventilation and cooling effects of a number of different stoping layouts for narrow reef mining in ultra-deep operations in very hot rock. The stope ventilation and cooling needs are driven primarily by the difference between the air temperature and that of the rock front being excavated. These needs depend on the face utilization, geometry, face advance (rate and direction), layout, backfill, use of water and machinery1,2,3. Detailed studies of different stoping configurations have been undertaken for mining operations extending to depths of 5000m below surface, where virgin rock temperatures approach 70°C. Extensive work has been completed with regard to evaluating ventilation and cooling requirements to maintain air reject temperatures of 28°C wet-bulb and better. This knowledge is being used to determine overall cooling requirements, reduce operational costs and maximize the efficiency of cooling systems. These issues are important when considering both the local and regional air conditioning systems and the most effective application of in-stope chilled water.

A Bureau of Mines investigation identified no mineral deposits in the Lost Creek RARE II area. Sand and gravel has been mined from alluvial flood plain deposits just outside the RARE II boundary. An oil and gas lease application which includes the eastern portion of the RARE II area is pending. Abundant basalt in the area can be crushed and used as aggregate; but it could not compete with similar deposits in more favorable locations, or with cheaper substitutes such as volcanic cinders or sand and gravel which are available outside the study area closer to major markets. No indication of coal or geothermal energy resources was found. INTRODUCTION Location and Access The Lost Creek RARE II area encompasses 8,300 acres (3,400 ha) of Lassen National Forest in north-central California, about 20 mi (30 km) north of Lassen Peak. The closest city is Redding, California, 50 air mi (80 km) southwest. Peripheral access is provided by State Highway 89 passing near the western RARE II boundary (fig. 1). The Pacific Crest Trail traverses the western margin of Hat Creek Rim adjacent to the eastern boundary of the area.

Many mining companies apply ergonomic principles, but it is done either informally and/or reactively. Examples of an informal approach include replacing worn equipment, such as seats, with models that have ergonomic features, or modifying tasks to eliminate safety hazards that will also reduce risk factor exposures that may result in musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). A reactive approach is followed when modifying a task/equipment after an MSD occurs. Neither one of these approaches involves a systematic method of proactively applying ergonomic principles to actually prevent injuries or illnesses. This paper will discuss how Vulcan Materials Company applied ergonomic principles and the interventions implemented to reduce risk factor exposures.

A common problem during the operation of the Kaldo furnace is the formation of accretions and blockage of the injection lance due to splashing. This typically occurs during the processing of anodic slimes for the production of doré. In this work, a 1:7 scale model of the Kaldo furnace currently in operation at Metalúrgica de Cobre, Mexico, was built in transparent acrylic plastic. Water and colored oil were used to represent the doré and slag, respectively. The model was used to determine the maximum penetration distance of the injection lance under a variety of experimental conditions at room temperature. Input variables included two types of oil, rotation speed, inclination angle, and the fraction of the vessel volume occupied by the liquids (φ). A mathematical correlation for the dimensionless maximum penetration distance of the injection lance d ∗ as a function of φ, the Froude number of the liquids in the vessel (Fr), the Reynolds number of the gas jet (Re), and the oil-to-water kinematic viscosity ratio (η)was developed. Reasonable agreement between the calculated and experimental values was obtained. Digital images showed that splashing was caused by the turbulent gas jet impinging upon the free surface of the liquids, whereas the cascade effect was negligible. The results of this work have been useful to improve the operation of an industrial Kaldo reactor.

Block caving is an underground mining method that can provide high production capacities at low operating costs. This enables the profitable extraction of massive, low-grade orebodies and attracts industry towards the method. Block caving operations require significant initial capital investment and predictable cave propagation is crucial to safety and economic success. Lack of access to observe the caving process hinders our ability to learn how the rock mass and geological structures are reacting to mining. Virtual reality scientific visualisation (VRSV) enables the integration and investigation of multiple, large caving data sets and provides a viable alternative to visualise rock mass response without physical access to the cave. Point instrumentation is incapable of providing an overview of cave performance and seismic monitoring, while providing an overview of the rock mass and the response of structures to caving, is only useful when linked to the caving activities. The integration of point instrumentation data with seismic monitoring information, coupled with scientific visualisation of the mining system in a virtual reality environment, provides a powerful means for understanding caving performance.This paper describes the use of a VRSV module at UNSW Australia, designed for investigating the block cave mining system from a case study operation. This module has been used to investigate the location and chronological evolution of seismicity to understand sources of damage resulting in seismic space-time sequences (SSTS) in the caving system. The events within an SSTS represent damage that is spatially and temporally related. An SSTS group represents a collection of microseismic events from a reasonably competent region of the rock mass that has experienced a stress change significant enough to cause sequential damage. SSTS group locations have been seen to be the path of subsequent cave propagation. Thus, SSTS analysis enables insight to further our understanding of rock mass damage in caving geomechanics through analysis of historic data. "Dating back to 1934, Con Mine is located directly south to the city of Yellowknife in the NWT, Canada. With mill operations ceasing in 2004, a challenging surface remediation situation resulted which required the treatment of close to 40,000 m3 of Arsenic impacted material.Through much of the period of 1941 to 1970, Con Mine treated their refractory arsenopyrite ore through the use of an Edwards Heath roaster. With mounting environmental pressure and through Canadian governmental studies during 1950 to 1970, attention was directed to the Arsenic Trioxide material being collected by two Doyle scrubbers on the Con’s roaster stack. In 1970, the roaster was decommissioned leaving the resulting Arsenic material in two containment areas on surface.As a result of Con Mine entering into remediation in 2004, the Con’s autoclave, commissioned in 1992, was dedicated to the immobilization of high impacted Arsenic material through the combination of excess Iron under high temperature and oxygen overpressure. Examined, herein, is the history and chemistry of the Con Mine autoclave as well as the two stages of chemistry for the Water Treatment Plant used to remove arsenic, heavy metals and WAD cyanide from tailings water. Simplified capping plans of the tailing containment areas and a high arsenic impacted area are also presented.INTRODUCTION TO CON MINECon Mine (Con) is situated just south of the City of Yellowknife in the North West Territories (NWT) Canada and is bounded locally by Yellowknife Bay (North Extension of Great Slave Lake) to the east and Kam Lake to the west (Figure 6). The discovery of gold at Con was made in 1934 and mineral rights were acquired by Consolidated Mining and Smelting Limited (Cominco) and Falconbridge soon thereafter. Nerco Minerals Limited (Nerco) took control in 1986 and in 1993, was subsequently sold to, Miramar Mining Corporation which in turn was purchased by friendly takeover involving Newmont Mining in November 2007 as a result of acquiring the Miramar’s Hope Bay project. Con’s underground operations ceased in September 2003 and have since entered into the remediation of the site. The current surface lease holdings are about 340 Hectares (Table 1) which sits on top of the Archean-aged Yellowknife Greenstone Belt."

The advent of the more efficient and effective rare-earth roll (RER) separator in the early 1980?s began a new era of dry magnetic separation. The RER units quickly became the separator of choice within the materials processing industry. Though RER separators are now commonplace throughout the world, only modest advancements have been made to the original design. This paper details recent, more significant, rare-earth magnetic separation developments. These developments maintain the best features of existing technology while minimizing shortcomings. The discussion includes discerning features that aid in better metallurgical performance. Also discussed are improved mechanical aspects that allow for both easier operation and maintenance. Performance details from various test programs are included.

The author discusses the promising future of the use of pipelines for transportation of ore slurries over long distances, citing existing installations. Various criteria and factors affecting the use and size of pipelines are considered. Among the factors influencing the use of pipelines are particle size, specific gravity, abrasiveness, minimum velocities, and pumping considerations. Long-distance transportation of solids by hydraulic pipelines holds the promise of great economic benefits. Today within the confines of most mineral processing plants, the moving of solids about in slurry form by pipeline is commonplace, since the method offers great advantages when conditions are suitable. Yet, this method is surprisingly slow in being adopted on a broad scale for transportation of solids over long distances (arbitrarily the term will be applied to one over five miles long). This is especially surprising in view of the successful realization in this country within the last five years of two daring ventures in long-distance solids pipelines. A 72-mile long, 6-in. diam pipeline of the American Gilsonite Co. has been satisfactorily transporting 700 tpd of gilsonite from the mine at Bonanza, Utah, to the processing plant at Grand Junction, Colo., since April 1957. The 108-mile long 10-in. diam pipeline of the Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Co. has been transporting about 4000 tpd of finely crushed coal from the mine at Cadiz, Ohio, to the Eastlake power plant of the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co. on Lake Erie since January 1958. However, besides two projects in the operations of The Anaconda Co. there have been hardly any other significant solids pipeline developments in the minerals industry during the last three years. The two projects are the 14-mile long, 6-in. diam copper concentrate gravity pipeline at Anaconda's El Salvador project in Chile which has been transporting about 800 tpd since January 1959. The second is a 16-in. diam tailings pipeline at the Anaconda Reduction Works, Anaconda, Mont., designed to transport about 20,000 tpd of deslimed flotation tailings for dam building. This pipeline, which is currently undergoing tryout tests and which will be about seven miles in length, will have a maximum of three 20-in. rubber-lined centrifugal pumps in series at the starting point, each developing a maximum of 100 ft of head, to supplement gravity. It is the writer's opinion that the major reason for the hesitation in considering pipeline operations is confusion due to an inadequate understanding of the basic physical principles affecting the slurry flow process by many engineers in the industry. This in turn begets an attitude of fear and trepidation instead of confidence on the part of many management executives, which leads to a minimizing of the advantages and exaggeration of difficulties when considering the possibility of a long-distance solids pipeline. The promotion of better understanding and consequently the promotion of greater confidence in the potentials of long-distance solids pipelines when conditions are suitable is thus the main purpose of this article. To this end, after considering several examples of the possibilities for solids pipelines in the minerals field, the relative significance of the major factors affecting pulp flow, and some major aspects of slurry pumping will be discussed on a general qualitative level. Then a brief outline of the semi-empirical quantitative methods developed to date for estimating slurry flow behavior will be presented. SOME POSSIBILITIES To give an idea of the magnitude of the possible economic benefits, it should be interesting to mention briefly some of the projects currently under consideration and to suggest some likely future possibilities. At Anaconda's El Salvador Project in Chile (Fig. 1) it is eventually planned to extend the existing 14-mile pipeline by another 60 miles to bring the copper concentrates down to the coast of the Pacific Ocean. Spray-on ground support membranes (GSM) or thin support liners hold today perhaps as much potential to impact underground (u/g) ground support operations as dry and later wet-mix shotcrete when introduced to mining in the latter part of the 20th century. This emerging technology has come a long way from the time the first single component experimental coatings were tested in the mid-1980s. Due to a number of factors, including occupational health risk and mine safety regulations, it has taken quite some time for the development of non-hazardous membrane products. However, at this junction most existing u/g mines that employ more conventional forms of ground support could benefit from evaluating GSM technology as a means of improving safety and the bottom line. The same is especially true for future mine developments. This paper describes Master Builders Inc.’s CS1251 GSM product and its implementation. It discusses the situations in which GSM may replace other forms of ground support. Furthermore, it evaluates GSM costs & safety issues and looks at present applications and the potentially bright future of this technology.

This publication describes mining and milling methods and costs at the Madison mine of National Lead Co., St. Louis Smelting & Refining Division, in the Fredericktown district of southeast Missouri and is one of a series prepared by the Federal Bureau of Mines on methods, practices, and costs of mining and milling throughout the United States. The are bodies of the Madison mine are known for the complexity and diversity of their are minerals. Sulfides of copper, nickel, and cobalt occur in commercial quantities with lead sulfide, which is the most valuable metallic mineral in are bodies of the Bonne Terre formation in southeast Missouri. Several attempts were made by various operators to mine the complex ores and separate the sulfide minerals before 1927 when National Lead Co. became interested in the Fredericktown district. Operating then as the St. Louis Smelting & Refining Co., the company began mining and milling ores from the Madison mine in 1944 and has operated continuously since then. A recently built refinery produces copper, nickel, and cobalt metal from a concentrate containing iron sulphides and small quantities of copper, nickel, and cobalt sulphides.
