This study focused on the chemical reactions between uranium tailings fluids and cores of subjacent bedrock from the site of the Cotter Corporation uranium mill at Canon City, Colorado. Actual and synthetic tailings fluids were forced through cores of bedrock. The pH of the effluent solutions was the dominant control on the behavior of dissolved species in solution. The pH depended on the presence or absence of calcite cement in the rocks. Calcite neutralized acidic raffinates and caused the precipitation of iron, manganese, aluminum, and possibly uranium. Chloride, sulfate, and sodium were not retarded upon passage through the cores, and sulfate and chloride should be useful as tracers of escaping tailings fluids. Zinc, copper, cobalt, nickel, uranium, and vanadium exhibited high mobility under acidic conditions and were strongly retarded at elevated pH. Calcium was released due to dissolution of calcite and ion-exchange. Magnesium was not retarded in concentrated solutions, but showed moderate retardation in dilute fluids. Potassium and ammonium both showed early retardation followed by breakthrough and mobility. The behavior of molybdenum was strongly dependent on pH, with retardation at low pH and mobility at elevated pH. Selenium was highly mobile under all conditions. Selenium should be a better tracer than molybdenum for many situations. Precipitation of carnotite appears to control the solubility of uranium and, possibly, vanadium. With the exception of the precipitation of aluminum and silica, all reactions were rapid.

A crown pillar cave occurred at the Ropes Mine in December, 1987, that resulted in closure of the mine. Production was resumed soon afterwards with the formulation of a rock mechanics plan designed to address several issues of safety and stability. The plan proved to be successful and shows what can be accomplished in the realm of applied rock mechanics where a cooperative atmosphere exists.

Roof falls are one of the greatest hazards in underground coal mines worldwide. Due to stringent safety measures and extensive support system development, roof falls have been reduced significantly but they still persist in many underground coal mines. Some of the roof falls initiate with cutter roof or guttering. In the past, many factors have been identified as being responsible for the development of cutters and roof fall. These responsible factors can be broadly classified as stress related or non-stress related. In this paper the finer details of mining technique have been taken into consideration for better understanding of cutter roof and roof fall problems. Three dimensional finite difference modeling has been used to explain the mechanism of cutter development. Strain softening material behavior has been used to realistically simulate the cutter formation, and common cutting sequences as implemented in the field have been simulated. This was done with an objective to determine whether the cutting sequence has really any significant control over cutter formation or not. In addition to cutting sequences, the effect of cut length is also studied. The effect of step cutting and turning of crosscut into and away from major and minor horizontal stresses is also examined to see its influence on cutter development.

In a predrained gassy coalmine, ventilation control plays a secondary role to the longwall (LW) goaf drainage systems to safely manage panel return gas levels. Typically, the LW specific gas emission (SGE) estimation models provide anticipated goaf gas emissions and arriving at required gas drainage capacity for various coal production scenarios. A study comparing the various LW goaf gas hole spacing patterns with weekly production rates of up to 270 kt/w of an operating mine with high SGE rates (~20 m3/t) was carried out. The goaf capture efficiency of LW panels ranged from 64 per cent to 85 per cent. For the first time, gas content of upper seam data post LW retreat were used to verify the current SGE prediction models. This study has shown that an average of 50 m goaf spacing is optimal for management of high production retreat gassy LW panels in presence of multiple upper and lower seams with gas emission zone influence reaching up to 200 m above workings. Due to the horizontal stress direction related geotechnical issues, goaf hole failures just behind the LW face is a recurring challenge resulting in significant and immediate increase in LW panel return gas levels. This paper highlights the shortcomings of current SGE prediction models for goaf gas estimation, and evolution of 50 m goaf hole spacing embedded in design process in managing the LW tailgate gas levels.CITATION:Belle, B, 2017. "Laterite ore processed by the Ambatovy Joint Venture in Madagascar is primarily limonitic in nature, containing about 40 to 45 wt.% Fe and 1.1 wt.% Ni. The process selected for treatment of this ore considered the behavior and deportment of iron in each step of the commercial flowsheet. Such considerations included nickel and cobalt recoveries, reagent consumptions, liquid-solid separation characteristics, and both intermediate and final product purities. In this paper, the results for the first three years of commercial operation at Ambatovy are compared with the design parameters, with emphasis on the behavior of iron.INTRODUCTION The main component of nickeliferous laterite ore is iron, and the Ambatovy deposit in Madagascar is no exception. The Ambatovy ore is primarily limonitic in nature, containing about 40 to 45 wt.% Fe and 1.1 wt.% Ni. Since the nickel content of the ore is roughly one fortieth that of iron, successful recovery of nickel depends on close control of the behavior of iron in the selected process. Exploration of the Ambatovy area, which is located to the east of Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar, dates back to 1960, when the Malagasy Service Géologique carried out a limited pitting and auger-drilling program. Phelps Dodge Corporation (now Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, Inc.) was granted the mining rights to the property in 1995 and carried out significant resource definition, environmental assessment and engineering studies between 1995 and 2001 (Chou, Rooke, Williams, & Hanks, 2000). In 2003, Dynatec Corporation, which was formed in 1997 by the merger of Dynatec International Ltd. and Sherritt International Consultants Inc., signed a joint venture agreement with subsidiaries of Phelps Dodge to evaluate the Ambatovy Nickel Project. Dynatec then became extensively involved in the development of the project, including process selection and pilot plant testing in Fort Saskatchewan (Collins et al., 2004, 2005, 2009; Collins & Vardill, 2005). Dynatec acquired 100% of the project in 2005 and a joint venture between Dynatec, Sumitomo Corporation, Korea Resources Corporation (KORES), and SNC-Lavalin Inc. (SLI) was formed shortly thereafter to provide funding for further development. SLI was responsible for engineering, procurement and construction management of the commercial facilities. Sherritt International Corporation reacquired Dynatec Corporation, including 40% ownership in the Ambatovy Nickel Project, in 2007. The current Ambatovy Joint Venture consists of an integrated nickel and cobalt mining, processing, refining and marketing enterprise between subsidiaries of Sherritt (40% owner and mine and plant operator), Sumitomo Corporation (32.5% owner) and KORES (27.5% owner)."

Willyamite from the type locality, Consols mine, Broken Hill, N.S.W., has been re-examined, and found to consist of zones with widely different Co:Ni ratios. The name willyamite is redefined to include the portion of the (Co, Ni)SbS series with cobalt in excess of nickel. Willyamite is pseudo-cubic, with the three axes equal to within 0·001 A.

Rhenium, molybdenum and tungsten are the elements demanded by high-end technologies. These metals are found in process solutions in forms of their oxyanions: ReO4-, MoO42- and WO42-. The later two can exist in forms of iso- and/or heteropolyanions. Basically all three metals demonstrate very similar chemical behavior in aqueous solutions. Unfortunately, in their mineral sources these elements commonly accompany each other, like pairs of rhenium-molybdenum or molybdenum-tungsten. Their economical separation is a challenging task.

Analysis for pillar extraction potential (A-PEP) is an intelligent tool, which could be used as a preliminary output indicator when considering the secondary extraction of regional support pillars in the Witbank and Highveld coalfields of South Africa. The safe and economic extraction of underground coal pillars is of paramount significance and importance to the South African coalmining industry to ensure continuity of supply of this fossil fuel. Pillar extraction practices in South Africa have been responsible a significant proportion of safety and fatality statistics in relation to its relative output (less than 5 per cent of total South African coal production) and, as a result, research was undertaken in local pillar extraction operations and extended to similar operations in New South Wales, Australia to assess a way forward for pillar extraction in South Africa. It was found that, although little in the way of new technologies has emerged in this field in the recent past, significant contributions could be made in the field of risk analysis to obtain a generic design methodology for pillar extraction in South Africa. The resultant A-PEP tool to assess pillar extraction potential is based on certain physical, risk and economic factors, which combine to indicate operational success in terms of economic, health and safety attributes. At the time of A-PEP?s development there was alack of operating underground coal pillar extraction operations, which made it difficult to validate its applicability. Since then, however, A-PEP has been successfully tested and validated against two unique underground coal pillar operations, which is the discussion of this paper. One operation is situated in the Witbank coalfield and is extracting pillars, which are 20 years old and at a depth of 80 metres below surface, while the other operation is situated in the Highveld coalfield-which is extracting 6 month-old-pillars underneath a massive dolerite sill at a depth of 220 metres. A-PEP has shown that its predictive nature is consistent the workings at both operations, irrespective of their unique conditions, and as such it can be successfully used as a mine planning tool. The A-PEP mine planning tool thus represents a positive step toward an integrated approach to underground coal pillar extraction when considering legal and operational aspects, which could form the basis for legislative guidelines when considering the future of pillar extraction in South Africa.

The earliest authenticated scientific report of the occurrence of platinum in rocks from the Bushveld Complex appears to be by William Bettel on 10 November 1906. Thereafter, prospecting of the chromite-rich rocks for platinum proved frustrating. I suggest that the resurgence of interest shown by Dr Hans Merensky in 1924 resulted from his realization that newly panned platinum had a different grain size from that in the chromite layers and indicated a different source rock, which he located, and it became known as the Merensky Reef.

This information circular, which describes the methods and costs of sinking a small underground shaft with steel supports at the Keystone mine of American Smelting and Refining Co., near Crested Butte, Colo., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on current shaft-sinking practices in various mining districts of the United States. Preparations for sinking a combined exploration, development, and production shaft from the lowest level of the Keystone mine began early in 1957. This vertical, three-compartment, 6-1/4-by 16-foot rectangular shaft was to be sunk in separate stages or lifts so as to correspond with the progress of an associated lateral exploration and development program. The first section of the shaft was collared and sunk to a depth of 209 feet between September 1957 and April 1958. Because of the depressed base-metal market, the mine was shut down as soon as the initial phase of the exploration and development program had been completed and before any deeper sinking could be attempted.

The treatment plant at the Macraes Gold Project in New Zealand processes a carbonaceous, refractory sulphide gold ore. Since its commissioning in 1990, there has been a programme of continuous improvement of the plant, leading to higher recovery, increased throughput and low operating costs. During this time, a number of processes for treating both, or either, the preg-robbing carbonaceous fraction of the ore and the refractory sulfide fraction have been evaluated, trialed and utilised. The latest phase involves the installation by Minproc of plant utilising Newmont Gold's Pressure Oxidation Technology, a process which is anticipated to mitigate both problem factors when commissioned in 1999.

This final report summarizes the prototype development and testing of an air curtain respirotory protective device under Bureau of Mines Contract HO122087. The air curtain respiratory protective device, as part of a miner?s hat, provides protection for the underground mining machine operator against inhalation of dangerous amounts of respirable coal dust. Major components of the air curtain respiratory protective device are: 1) a modified miner hat incorporating an air curtain jet manifold from which the protective air curtain emanates, 2) a motor blower which supplies the air for the air curtain, 3) a filter element to remove the particulate material from the air used for the air curtain, and 4) the hoses and coupling used to duct the filtered air from the motor blower to the modified miner's hat.

The use of quality materials (aggregates and asphalt binder) in optimal proportions is the key to producing optimally performing hot mix asphalt (HMA). The Superpave mix design standard in the US introduced specific volumetric and binder property requirements in HMA design. Different methods for HMA constituent proportioning have been proposed in various guidelines. The design process to determine the HMA blend is currently iterative and engineers rely almost exclusively on experience. This approach is time consuming and often does not result in cost-optimal HMA mixtures. This paper introduces a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) optimization model for hot-mix asphalt constituent proportioning. The MILP model minimizes the total mix cost while satisfying all the volumetric, binder and mix property specification requirements. The model has been successfully validated with real-life example. The aggregates and binder ratios from the model were in close agreement with those from the contractor. The Bailey ratios and the gradation constraints were also satisfied. The cost of the optimal mix was $0.804/Mg less than that of the contractors?. This marginal reduction might make all the difference in an industry that is highly competitive. The MILP model also demonstrated that adding RAP to the contractor?s design would reduce the cost of the blend by $5.74/Mg. The virgin binder content was reduced by 1% because of the recycled asphalt contained in the RAP. This work represents the first successful attempt in incorporating both aggregate and asphalt performance requirements into the optimization formulation. Applying these models will ensure the minimum cost mix that meets all constraints and will increase profit margins for plant operators.

The thickness of the coal seam is one of the more important items influencing the productivity and general overall efficiency of operation of a coal mine. The average thickness of coal seams mined in the United States has changed very little in the past 40 years. The first measurement of thickness of bituminous coal and lignite seams was made for 1920, when the average thickness was 5.3 feet.4/ The average thickness for later years was as follows: 1945, 5.4 feet; 1950, 5.3 feet; 1955, 5.2 feet; and 1960, 5.5 feet.5/ Table 1 includes data on number and production of bituminous coal and lignite mines classified by I-foot intervals of seam thickness mined in 1920, 1945, 1950, 1955, and 1960. Though bituminous coal and lignite are mined today from seams of exceedingly variable thickness -less than 2 feet to more than 50 feet - a large majority of the production, 62 percent in 1960, came from seams 3 to 6 feet thick. This is not surprising since the coal seam of moderate thickness presents the least mining difficulties.
