"During 2007, Codelco-Chile carried out industrial tests to validate the Continuous Converting Process in the Teniente Converter of the Codelco Norte smelter.For planning and starting up the tests, a predictive, analytical and dynamic model was developed to support operational decisions. The dynamic model was developed using the METSIM® platform and dynamic data exchange (DDE) to operate smoothly with MS Excel®. The main feature of this real-time model was the on/off-line ability to work and gather data from either the smelter’s PI system® or database, and simulate the operation with or without scheduled events and controls.The main model development aspects, which include thermodynamics, metallurgical and kinetic considerations, slag-type and on-line mass and heat balances of the process, as well as the successful validation of the model, are presented and discussed in the present paper."

The paper reports on the results of a kinetic study on the oxidation reaction of aqueous free cyanide ions with H202, in the presence of Cu(2+) catalyst. The variables and respective ranges studied were the following: (CN) ° = 10 -100 mg/l pH = 10 -11 (H202/CN) mol ratio = 1 -3 (Cu/CN) mol ratio = 0 -0.25 The results lead to the development of a semi-empirical model whish incorporates both the useful oxidation reaction and the parallel alkaline decomposition of H202.

At Lonrho Platinum in South Africa, ores from both the Merensky and UG2 reefs of the Bushveld Igneous complex are treated by flotation and smelting to produce a nickel-copper matte which serves as a collector for the platinum group metals (PGM' s). The nickel-copper matte was originally shipped to Norway for treatment and recovery of the contained base metals, with the return of the PGM rich concentrate to South Africa. The Lonrho Platinum Base Metal Refinery was commissioned in 1985. The original process employed a Shenitt Gordon design. The converter matte is treated in a refinery which utilises both atmospheric and pressure leaches for the dissolution of base metals to produce nickel sulphate crystals, copper cathode and a PGM concentrate. This paper refers to flowsheet and operating changes as well as improvements within the Base Metal Refinery.

A study on the electro kinetics of lead carbonate, silica, and alumina, in aqueous media was carried out at different pH values. The behavior of potential was determined for these species in the pH range between 3 and 12. Homocoagulation of lead carbonate in aqueous media is analyzed at its isoelectrical point. Lead carbonate heterocoagulation is analyzed with silica, alumina, and silica ? alumina mixtures at low pH values. The experimental results are considered for their possible application to treat residual water polluted with lead.

A patent is a right granted by the government to exclude others from making, using, selling, offering to sell, or importing a claimed invention. Once the right is granted, the patentee may use the U.S. Federal Courts to enforce that right. Reading a patent from a litigation perspective is quite different than reading it from a technical perspective. The Judge's interpretation of the claims will affect their scope, and likely the ultimate outcome of a patent case. Additionally, the patent right can be challenged. If done successfully, the patent can be rendered invalid or unenforceable. The likelihood of success, and well as the achievement of other litigation goals is often influenced by the forum where the litigation is initiated. Finally, patent litigation costs are significant, and will weigh heavily in the decision to file (or fight) a patent lawsuit.

A process has been developed for detoxifying spent potliner (SPL) in which the SPL is blended with limestone and an anti-agglomeration agent and thermally treated in a rotary kiln. The process has been proven and a commercial plant is in operation at Gum Springs, Arkansas. The treated by-product material has been delisted by the U.S. EPA and is now a potential raw material for many commercial applications. Finding uses for a non-hazardous material has many advantages over finding uses for a hazardous material like SPL. Complete usage of the by-product will complete the life cycle and eliminate any landfilling of non-hazardous SPL by-products or residues. Being non-hazardous and containing compounds used in the ceramic and numerous other industries assures many potential uses for the spent potliner by-product.

Aiming at many controversial reports on Raman spectral pattern of heptamolybdate ion in aqueous solution appearing in the literature and the absence of its standard pattern, the comparative investigations on Raman spectral pattern of saturated solution of ammonium heptamolybdate tetra hydrate were done. The results showed that the main vibrant frequencies of Raman spectral pattern of the saturated solution were in good agreement with those introduced in the literature, and that the intensity ratio (4.4) of the strongest peak to the second strongest peak recorded in Raman spectrum of the saturated solution had three obvious characteristics: it was greater than each of the results (ranging from 3.7 to 1.3) reported in the literature, much closer to that (4.7) of crystal and well conformed to the change rule of Raman spectra occurring in the process of the first-step polymerization of acidified molybdate solution. It was found that Raman spectrum of heptamolybdate ion in aqueous solution was determined by not only the main vibrant frequencies but also the intensity ratio, which is also the crucial result in this study. The comparative investigations indicate that the pattern of Raman spectrum of the saturated solution is the standard pattern of Raman spectrum of heptamolybdate ion in aqueous solution essentially. The affirmed standard pattern is reliable and can be used to the identification of heptamolybdate ion in aqueous solution, applied in the research of the equilibrium of acidified molybdate solution and the exploration of the best technologic condition for the production of high quality heptamolybdates.

Steel Ladle in Bhilai Steel Plant, SAIL, India, passes through VAD & LF-RH route and this exposes refractory lining to a severe operating conditions. Ladles are lined with in-house manufactured MgO-C refractories. Lining life used to be 35 heats, out of which 18-20 heats were through VAD/LF-RH, hence, ladle availability had become a constraint. Laboratory studies were carried-out to optimize granulometry and composition. Granulometry was developed by adopting Andearssen packing model. A suitable plasiticiser was identified to eliminate inconsistency caused due to variation in resin quality and weather condition. It reduced variation in green bulk density from 6 to 1.3%. Abrasion and slag erosion studies were conducted, which shows that with increase of carbon, abrasion resistance decreases and corrosion resistance improves. Based on these studies, graphite in slag zone was increased from 10 to 12.5% and in metal zone it was reduced to 7.5%. Different process parameters of brick making were optimized to make MgO-C bricks of maximum bulk density with reduced coke porosity. Modified bricks have bulk density of 2.99-3.02 g/cc and coke porosity of 9.5-10.5%. Further, shape of the bricks were changed from side arch to mini keys and thickness was increased from 80 to 100 mm. Mini key bricks are pressed from sides, thus eliminating variation in thickness which is critical dimension for dry joints. These modifications improved average lining life of steel ladles to 64 heats, which includes 37-40 secondary heats. Maximum life obtained is 87 heats.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines applied process mineralogy to investigate a lead and zinc deposit located near Story Creek, Colville Mining District, Alaska. Mineralization is hosted by the Kayak Shale in veins, veinlets, and breccia. Sphalerite and galena, with supergene anglesite, occur in symmetrical quartz veins and between breccia clasts. The study sample analyzed 2.11 percent Pb, 5.37 percent Zn, 0.014 percent Cu, and 1.2 oz/ton Ag. Analyses of crushed products showed that 33 percent of the sample weight, and more than 50 percent of the Pb and 65 percent of the Zn, are in the minus 850 um fraction. Liberated grains of sphalerite and galena were found in crushed products finer than 300 um. Beneficiation tests indicate the material is amenable to processing by traditional gravity and flotation techniques.

Section 1417 of the Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments enacted by the O.S. Congress prohibits the use of lead containing solders for potable water systems in new construction or when making repairs. The legislature defines "lead-free" solder as containing less than 0.2% lead. In the development of a new solder it was recognized in addition to the lead free requirement, the alloy should perform as well as the popular 50/50 tin lead solder, both in application and properties. Another objective was to have only nontoxic elements. This led to the development of a 4.0% copper, 0.5% silver and 95.5% tin solder. Review of the merits of other alloy systems and the development of the physical properties along with test data are presented for the lead free tin. rich alloy.

From its beginning in the 1970s, the Teniente Converter has consistently achieved continuous improvement, and has contributed to the competitiveness and sustainability of Codelco's copper operations. The later introduction of the Slag Cleaning Furnace technology has helped to create a full technology package, referred to as the Teniente Technology. This paper outlines the features of a new research and innovation program designed to bring the Teniente Technology as a modem, competitive technology into the 21st century. The overall objectives and features of the program are described and discussed. It is fully anticipated that these activities will help position the Teniente Technology as a world-class modem technology, well-integrated and operating in a fully continuous mode in conjunction with the other units at the plant, a competitive technology which operates in harmony with respect to environmental regulations.

In recent years, ENAMI implemented modernisation plans at its two smelters in order to meet the government's environmental regulations introduced in the early 1990s. The modernisation plans defined the new SO2 and particulates emission targets, deadlines for compliance, and the revised treatment capacities of the smelters. At Las Ventanas smelter, the principal process change consisted of eliminating the reverberatory furnace. All the smelter feed is currently processed in a 4m diameter, 14m long Teniente Converter, using up to 34% oxygen enriched air. Dry concentrate is injected into the bath through tuyeres. A fuel oil burner compensates for any process heat deficiency. The Teniente Converter high copper content slag is cleaned in an electric furnace. This furnace is also used to melt internal reverts. This paper will discuss the successful operation of the slag cleaning electric furnace.

As Phelps Dodge Corporation addresses the environmental challenges of the 1990's, water management has become a key element in an overall waste minimization strategy. The Phelps Dodge Hidalgo copper smelter has implemented a comprehensive water management program that includes management of both fresh and process water utilized by its pyrometallurgical operation. Two major technological strategies are being implemented. They are the design, construction and operation of a raw water pre-treatment facility to allow increased evaporation within cooling towers thereby minimizing blow down, and the use of a brine concentrator to treat and recycle significant quantities of process water. The end result of this program is a significant reduction in raw water pumped from the underlying aquifer into the facility as well as a decrease in process water which must be impounded or otherwise treated.

The paper "Copper Smelting to the Year 2000" was presented at the CIM Conference of Metallurgists in Sudbury, August 1979. That paper predicted, in part, that high matte grade, high oxygen smelting - particularly in flash furnaces - would dominate copper smelting until the beginning of the next millennium. The present paper re-evaluates that prediction and examines the changes that have occurred and will occur in copper extraction in the 1990's. Of particular interest is the question as to whether major competitors are on the horizon for flash smelting and Peirce-Smith converting. Recent results with direct-to-blister smelting, lance smelting and submerged-tuyere smelting are reviewed and their roles in future copper smelting are predicted. Requirements for H2SO4 plants which handle the off-gases from modern smelting/converting processes are also examined.

"The trend towards near net shape casting requires the development of more complex design and control algorithms for continuous casting ""machines in particular with respect to the solidification process.Compared to conventional continuous casting the reduction in casting thickness allows to influence more directly the solidification rate by control variables like surface cooling and/or casting speed.In order to enable the determination of these control variables for a given solidification profile, an algorithm (inverse solidification analysis) has been developed based on nonlinear constrained optimization. The application of the model is illustrated by practical examples ranging from conventional continuous casting to advanced thin slab casting.IntroductionProcess development in the Iron and Steel Industry is directed towards the realization of continuous process sequences. Since the direct linkage of processes imposes some restrictions onto the individual process steps, more complex algorithms are needed for design of equipment and control of operation. In particular the recent trend to reduce casting thickness, i.e. to cast thin slabs, has made the direct coupling of continuous casting and rolling absolutely necessary. The prospective development in strip production is schematically shown in fig. 1."

"A variety of interacting complex phenomena takes place during the casting of metallic components. Here molten metal is poured into a mould cavity where it flows, cools, solidifies and then deforms in its solid state. As the metal cools, thermal gradients will promote thermal convection which will redistribute the heat around the component (usually from feeders or risers) towards the solidification front and mushy zone. Also, as the evolving solid regions of the cast component deform they will form gap at the cast-mould interface. This gap may change the rate of solidification in certain parts the casting, hence affecting the manner in which the cast component solidifies. Interaction between a cast component and its surrounding mould will also govern stress magnitudes in both the cast and mould - these may lead to defects such as cracks.This paper presents a multiphysics modelling approach to this complex process. Emphasis will be placed on the interacting phenomena taking place during the process and the modelling strategy used. Comparisons with plant data are also be given."

"This work presents the preparation and characterization of a nanocomposite based on Poly(butylene terephthalate) PBT and Brazilian smectitic clay (bentonite chocolate clay). Before being incorporated as clay nanoparticles in PBT resin, the clay was organically modified by the addition of a quaternary salt and sodium carbonate. PBT/Clay nanocomposite (96.3:3.70 wt %) was obtained by using a twin-screw extruder machine. After extrusion process, the nanocomposite was characterized by tensile, flexural and impact tests, SEM, Vicat, HDT, DSC, TGA and XRD tests. The results showed that the properties of the nanocomposite obtained were superior to those of neat PBT. Concerning the temperature of thermal distortion (HDT) an expressive gain of around 45 % was presented to PBT/Clay nanocomposite compared to PBT evidencing the interaction of nanofiller with the polymeric matrix.IntroductionPolymer-clay nanocomposites, also called as polymer layered silicates nanocomposites have attracted much attention from both industry and academia over the past decade because they frequently exhibit unexpected properties. In contrast to the traditional fillers, nanofillers, in particular, nanoclay, is found to be effective. The addition of a small amount (< 5 wt.%) can show significant improvement in mechanical, thermal and barrier properties, flammability resistance, and electrical/electronic properties of the final polymer nanocomposite without requiring special processing techniques. Also, as with other nano-size particles, the overall crystallization rate and the glass transition temperature are also affected. It is generally believed that the improvement of properties of nanoclay composites is directly related to the complete exfoliation of silicate layers in the polymer matrix. However, a processing technique that produces complete exfoliation is still a technical challenge [1,2]."

"A 1/3 scale ""thin-slice"" model of an electric arc furnace was developed so that gas could be injected to simulate foaming gas evolution. The influence of arc jets, oxygen lancing and bottom bubbling was also simulated. Liquid velocities were measured by a white light particle image velocimetry system. Numerical simulations of some of these effects were made using commercial CFD packages. Comparisons with measured results show that considerable care is required to select the appropriate model and to interpret the computational results.INTRODUCTIONDuring recent years electric arc furnaces (EAF) have captured a significant share of steel production, partially due to increased productivity through the introduction of advanced technology such as oxygen injection, slag foaming and long-arc operation, process automation and post-combustion. However, systematic analysis of the process and these effects on heat transfer and fluid flow in the furnace is still in its infancy. Most investigationsl1 6l have been restricted to a specific application such as oxygen lancing or bottom stirring. In addition, it is very difficult to make comparisons between these computed results and experimental/industrial results. In this work a 1/3-scale ""thin-slice"" model of Dofasco's 190 ton EAF was built. The fluid flow in the bath due to the arc jets, bottom stirring, oxygen lancing and CO evolution was simulated. The velocity distributions in the bath were measured using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) System. In addition, numerical simulations of bottom stirring and CO evolution were carried out using two commercial CFD packages (Fluent and Phoenics). The objective of this work is to validate the mathematical models so that they can be applied to the full-scale furnaces."

Silver dissolution with thiourea was studied by using the rotating disk technique. The major parameters studied were: thiourea concentration (0-0.5M), ferric sulfate concentration (0-0.5M), sulfuric acid concentration (0-0.5M), and the effect of many foreign ions (Mn, o.i, Co, Ca, Na, etc.). Temperature effect was studied in the range 5-35 .C. The activation energy was 5.4 Kcal/mole. The dissolution of silver was first order with respect to ferric sulfate, and the secord order with respect to thiourea. Among the additives, copper had a dramatically negative effect. The strong oxidants such as hydrogen peroxide and manganese dioxide were also detrimental for silver dissolution. Silver does not dissolve with thiourea in the absence of ferric ions. Sulfuric acid does not participate in the dissolution reaction either. Chemically, the most important parameter for silver dissolution is the ferric sulfate/thiourea ratio. Thus, in the solutions with excess of ferric sulfate, a solid silver-thiourea complex is formed, which precludes transfer of silver into solution. In the solutions with the excess of thiourea, the free thiourea reacts with formed solid silver-thiourea complex and silver goes into the solution. The solid silver-thiourea complex was characterized according to its chemical composition. The complex contains 6.54%C, 2.49\H, 14.77%N, 16.09%0, 21.62%8, and 37.13% Ag. This composition corresponds to a Ag2so4.3&apos;1U.2ff:i0 compound The soluble silver species are present in the solution as the dimers of AgTU+3 complexes.

The optimal operation of the blast furnace depends considerably on the properties of the sinter fed into the furnace. As a result, the optimization of the sintering processes has a direct effect on the overall effectiveness of the iron making processes. In order to produce a good sinter special care needs to be taken in order to assure it has a good permeability and reducibility and it is able to retain these properties for a certain time. If the sinter starts to melt down early in the upper part of the blast furnace, where its solid state reduction is essential, permeability decreases, the gas channels get blocked, reductibility diminishes and serious problems may also follow. Among the factors that influences the above mentioned sinter properties are the oxygen potential and fluxing components. Nevertheless, their effect on the phase relations during sintering and sinter reduction conditions has not yet entirely clarified and confusion exists in literature. This quantification becomes even more important today where many new minor components such as Al2O3 and MgO enter the sinter through raw materials. This work quantifies the effect of oxygen potential and fluxing components such as alumina and magnesia on the liquidus and phase relations of the sinter primary melts in the iron rich portion of CaO-FeO-Fe2O3-SiO2 system at sintering conditions. This is carried out by the means of new type of industrial diagrams in the form of Fe/CaO vs. SiO2 that can directly help the optimization of the sintering processes.
