Doe Run's Buick Smelter was converted from a primary lead smelter to a secondary lead smelter in 1991. The recycling facility was designed to produce 60,000 tons of refined lead per year from 110,000 tons of spent starting-lighting-ignition (SLI) batteries and 10,000 tons of lead contained in drosses and scrap. Since commissioning, Buick's refined lead output has steadily increased to exceed 120,000 tons for 1999. The production gains have been the result of continuous process improvements, empowerment of the workforee, and development of additional scrap lead streams. The production gains were accomplished while setting industry standards for employee safety, reducing plant environmental emissions and employee blood leads, achieving ISO 9002 certification, and expanding product lines to meet customer requirements. This paper highlights Buick's major accomplishments through the 1990's.

UFP are defined by atoms or their clusters having diameter in the range of l0Å-0.l.um. Due to a ratio of very large surface area to volume, they have peculiar properties such as extra high surface energy. Recently UFP deposition technique may find its new applications to various areas such as conductive/resistive film formation. In this method, gas flow with UFP jet through the nozzle which is considered to be a free molecular flow is maintained at a very high speed (~100m/s). Using this technique, mixture film of Fe and Ni, and Ag/ Ag-Alloy etc. were obtained, and their mechanical and electro-magnetic properties were determined. The experimental results are pending. The test results and discussion will be presented in the main paper.

La Caridad copper smelter is located in the magnificent but rugged Sierra Madre Mountains. This project presents unusual challenges that require the utmost in detailed analysis and planning. The smelter, owned by Mexicana de Cobre, S.A. de C.V., has an annual production capacity of 225,000 metric tons of copper and 600,000 metric tons of sulfuric acid. It utilizes only the Flash Smelting process. This project will expand the annual production capacity to 270,000 metric tons of copper and 1,000,000 metric tons of sulfuric acid. Offgases from the Flash Furnace and the Teniente Converter will be sent to a mixing chamber, from which it will be led to two sulfuric acid plants. This project will then produce a high quality sulfuric acid.

The selective aluminum extraction by 3 different calixarenes (p-tert-butyl-calix[4]arene-tetra¬2-acetic-acid-ethyl-ester, p-tert-butyl-calix[4]arene-tetra-2-acetic-acid and p-tert-butyl-calix-[4]arene-di-2-acetic-acid-ethyl-ester) from an industrial pickling bath solution was studied. The pickling bath solution contained hydrofluoric and phosphoric acid as its main components. The aluminum removal was not successful and also no significant extraction of trace metals present was observed.

This paper reports the results of a kinetic study on the oxidation of free cyanide and Cu-cyanide complex ions with HO,. The variables and respective ranges studied were the following: [CN] total =10 - 500 mg/l; pH=10-11; (H2O2/CN) mole ratio = 1- 3; (Cu/CN) mole ratio = 0.10 - 0.25. The results were interpreted by a semi-empirical model that incorporates the useful oxidation reactions and the parallel alkaline decomposition of H2O2

A rotating-discelectrode system was used to evaluate the electrochemical behaviour of Eu(III) during its reduction in NaCl solutions. The solution pH and NaCl concentration have a great effect on the reduction kinetics. The thermodynamic modelling study also revealed that Eu(III) exists in various forms in NaCl solutions. At a low concentration of NaCl, the predominant species is the free Eu3+. Other Eu-chloro complexes become more predominant when the NaCl concentration increases.

"Synthetic rutile for paints industry is conventionally produced by a combined smelting and leaching process. Smelting process is an energy intensive step and represents economic burden in view of the increasing energy costs. Egyptian ilmenite ore containing 40% TiO2 and 38% total Fe was thus directly leached with sulphuric acid to produce eventually synthetic rutile. The process-involves digestion of the ore with sulphuric acid whereby both TiO2 and Fe are dissolved. The solution was then treated with iron powder to convert Fe3+ to Fe2+ to avoid co-precipitation of iron during the hydrolysis step. After solid/liquid separation and clarification, Fe was crystallized as ferrous sulphate hydrate by chilling. The titanium pregnant liquor was concentrated by evaporation and then hydrolyzed to precipitate hydrated titanium dioxide which was then calcined to produce synthetic rutile containing 98.6 TiO2 and 0.58% Fe2O 3. The optimum conditions of all the processing stages were determined.IntroductionSynthetic rutile for paints, welding rods and other industries could be produced from ilmenite ore by sulfuric acid leaching process. "Nanophased coupled growth structures, with spacings of -10 nm, have been observed in banded microstructures produced by laser melting hypoeutectic Ag-Cu alloys. These coupled growth structures comprised a Cu-rich phase of width - 1 nm and a Ag-rich phase of width - 9 nm. In this paper, microstructural observations of nanophased coupled growth structures in hypo eutectic AgCu alloys are presented. Laser beam velocities for the transition from banded to microsegregation free microstructures are modelled and compared with experimental values. Models are presented to show that, at a critical undercooling, initial growth of a Ag-rich, metastable, extended solid solution is rapid but slows to a halt as copper is partitioned into the liquid at the solid/liquid interface. Following nucleation, the coupled growth structure then grows until the partitioned copper is consumed, at which point growth of the Ag-rich solid solution is again accelerated. This cycle then repeats resulting in banded microstructures comprised of 750 nm of the Ag-rich extended, metastable solid solution, followed by 250 nm of the coupled growth structure.1. Structural Studies of Laser Melted and Resolidified TrailsPresented here are observations of laser melted and resolidified trails in Ag-Cu alloys obtained at beam velocities ranging from 0.7 to 34 cm S·I. When the laser beam is scanned along the surface (positive x-direction) with a velocity Vb a melt pool with the shape given in Fig. 1a moves with the beam. The isotherms move with the velocity, Vi,. = Vb cos.p. Calculations employing the thermal analysis of Kou, Hsu and Mehrabian [1] for the beam velocities of this investigation and for the thermal properties of AgCu alloys, indicated that, .p, the angle between the isotherm velocity and beam velocity should be small at the surface where microstructural studies were made. This prediction was supported by observations of trail cross-sections. Based on these observations, and the calculations which include latent heat effects, the isotherm velocity for observations near the surface in our investigation was taken to be 27 cm S-I."

"Degradation of refractories in molten aluminum applications leads to energy inefficiencies, both in terms of increased energy consumption during use as well as due to frequent and premature production shutdowns. Therefore, the ability to enhance and extend the performance of refractory systems will improve the energy efficiency through out the service life. TCON_ ceramic composite materials are being produced via a collaboration between Fireline TCON, Inc. and Rex Materials Group. These materials were found to be extremely resistant to erosion and corrosion by molten aluminum alloys during an evaluation funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and it was concluded that they positively impact the performance of refractory systems. These findings were subsequently verified by field tests. Data will be presented on how TCON shapes are used to significantly improve the thermal management of molten aluminum contact applications and extend the performance of such refractory systems.IntroductionThe production of molten aluminum creates aggressive environments for processing equipment, thereby requiring refractory materials to contain the aluminum during melting, transfer, treatment, and casting operations. Degradation of these refractories not only causes issues with reduced product quality and production yields, but also increases heat losses as the insulative properties of the refractories are compromised. Furthermore, in addition to disrupting production output, refractory failures lead to further impacts upon energy efficiency as large amounts of energy are lost during the cooling and subsequent reheating of the equipment as the refractory linings are repaired or replaced.The need for improved refractory materials is recognized throughout the industry. A joint U.S. Department of Energy and industrial workshop held in 2000 on applications for advanced ceramics in aluminum production [1] noted that refractory materials used in melt processing equipment have many limitations. The workshop report noted that these issues may be addressed by using advanced ceramics, but new materials must be cost effective when compared to current refractory materials. Also, in 2005 the Canadian aluminum industry produced a technology roadmap [2] having the goal of identifying and bridging gaps between current technological resources in the industry and future requirements. One of the areas identified as being crucial to the future of the industry was the need for improved molten aluminum-resistant materials."

Under the traditional environmental paradigm, industry, stakeholders, and government impact the environment through production, consumption, and regulation. For more than twenty years, this paradigm has survived more or less unchallenged. Environmental action has followed a typical pattern: industry pollutes, the public clamors, government enacts legislation, and industry expenditures for pollution-control equipment soar. In the 1990's, many groups realize that command-and-control techniques may not be the most effective method of dealing with environmental issues in the new millennium. The need for regulatory reform became apparent in the 1980's after an accident at the Union Carbide plant in Bhopal, India. In addition, the prospects of an integrated European market and increased global trade sparked a need for common standards regarding the production of goods and services, which led to the adoption of the International Standards Organization (ISO) 9000 Quality Standards. These factors, and others, triggered the development of the Environmental Management System (EMS). Over the past decade, country-and industry- specific EMSs were developed. However, the IS0 realized the need for a single, internationally recognized standard that would be workable for any type organization. The goal of this standard is to promote economic competitiveness, remove trade barriers, and promote environmental protection. To this end, the IS0 14000 Standards were developed to provide business with a structure for managing environmental impacts. This article argues that a new paradigm has begun to transcend the old. Protection of the environment if shifting from "government drivers" to "market drivers". This shift means that industry and stakeholders, instead of government, are taking the lead to develop ways to protect the environment. This article also argues that government can use this new paradigm, in a time of declining budgets and regulatory reform, to continue to protect the environment through increased compliance monitoring and rigorous enforcement. Specifically, the IS0 14000 Standards can allow the government to reduce compliance costs, streamline permit and reporting requirements, and provide business with regulatory flexibility. Finally, this article argues that IS0 14000 will be central to the regulatory reform effort, because it can be internally implemented with little need for legislative intervention.

"In order to solve air leakage of sintering testing cumbersome, inaccurate results, and other issues, the sinter machine air leakage characteristics were studied, and combining the mathematical modeling and the field detection. The temperature before air leakage was calculated by mathematical model, energy balance equation was established according to sintering process, using Adams prediction correction method which has stronge stability and high precision, to solve hyperbolic partial differential equation with astringency problem. The temperature after air leakage is detected by instruments, according to energy conservation calculation the sintering air leakage rate. According to the sintering continuity and periodicity, sintering air leakage location diagnosis expert system was established to judge specific air leakage locations.IntroductionStrengthening of modern blast furnace production depends on the quality of the raw material preparation to a large extent [1]. Technical and economic index of modern blast furnace production is advanced; the most important reason is the use of concentrated feed. Sintering plant is the ""kitchen"" of blast furnace’s concentrate. As we all know, sintering plant is major energy consumption of steel plant, in sinter process energy consumption, the solid fuel consumption of total energy consumption is 75%~80%, power is 13%~20%, ignition and combustion is 5%~10%. To reduce the air leakage of sintering plant is an effective measurement to save energy consumption. At present, our air leakage of sintering compared to the other developed countries is still a long way to go. Japan’s air leakage rate is about 30%, and 35%~60% air leakage of sintering machine at home, a big gap exists between the plants. At present the determination of air leakage is all for manual operation, long measuring period, considerable manpower and resources, and the results are significantly affected by operation. For air leakage of sintering control lag issues, research and development of diagnosis expert system for on-line monitoring model for air leakage and, through this research can reduce the use of detection equipment, detect sintering air leakage, improve the yield and quality of sintering production, reduce energy consumption, and extend equipment life span."

In this talk, we review highlights of x-ray magnetic scattering studies performed during the last decade, concentrating at the beginning on experiments on the rare earth metal holmium.(1-4) Besides intrinsic interest in the x-ray scattering cross-section and its description, studies of this type are motivated by the possibility that new structural and magnetic properties of rare earth metals might be revealed, and that new techniques may thereby be developed. As a result, interest in x-ray magnetic scattering experiments. has grown rapidly during the last 10 years particularly, with the regular application of synchrotron radiation techniques- Magnetic scattering experiments have by now been performed at most of the x-ray synchrotrons around the world. In addition, insertion .device beamlines dedicated to x-ray magnetic scattering experiments are planned at each of the next-generation storage rings presently under construction in the United States (APS), Europe (ESRF), and Japan (SPRING-8). Generally, the results of x-ray magnetic scattering experiments may be analyzed within two regimes of the incident x-ray energy, namely, in the limit of high x-ray energies, when the incident x-ray energy lies above the excitation energy of any absorption edge, and at resonance, when the incident energy lies near an absorption edge. In the high energy limit, the amplitude for x-ray magnetic scattering has the simple form [L(Q)?A + S(Q)?B](5-7) Here, L(Q) and S(Q) refer to the Fourier 'transforms of the atomic orbital and spin magnetization densities, respectively, and the vectors A and B depend on the incident and scattered wavevectors and on the: incident and scattered polarization vectors. 7) Because the vectors A and B are not identical, the polarization dependence of the orbital contribution to the magnetic cross-section differs from that of the spin contribution. This leads to the possibility that the orbital and spin magnetization densities maybe distinguished, in x-ray scattering experiments. The same distinction is not directly possible by neutron diffraction techniques (in dipole approximation, where the polarization dependence of the orbital contribution is identical to that of the spin contribution), and is important to a fundamental understanding of the electronic structure of magnetic materials. "The paper presents a 3D finite element solver for non-steady state fluid flow. The thermomechanical simulation package REM3D® has been initially developed to model Stokes' flow for polymer injection. The mechanical module is based on a Eulerian velocitypressure formulation. The spatial discretization uses P 1+IP1 tetrahedral elements. The front tracking module consists of the resolution of a transport equation, thanks to a space-time discontinuous Galerkin formulation. It includes mesh adaptation, which permits a dynamic refinement at the front, thus controling the numerical diffusion. The same approach is used to solve heat transfer. In this paper, we focus on the specific adaptations done to treat Navier Stokes flow. The treatment of inertia is detailed, as well as the implementation of sliding conditions at mould surface, using conservative normals. Industrial applications are presented.IntroductionThe study of the mould filling stage in casting processes requires the ability to simulate complex non steady-state three-dimensional flows. Most commercial software use the volume of fluid (VOF) method, associated with a Eulerian formulation, see for instance the series of conferences ""Modelling of Casting, Welding and Advanced Solidification Processes"" [1-3]. The VOF method [4] consists in solving the conservation equation dF / dt = 0 for a variable F - the volumic fraction of fluid - whose value is 1 in filled regions and 0 elsewhere. Two fluids are actually considered: the molten alloy and a gas in the empty regions. This method suffers generally from numerical diffusion in the resolution of the free surface tracking equation, which is of pure advective type. The precision of the computation is then strongly dependent on the mesh density. Since the mesh is fixed (Eulerian formulation) this implies that in case of complex flow the user must have a priori a fairly good idea of the flow characteristics in order to capture properly the critical features of the flow. In addition, the method can hardly handle the discontinuity of the material viscosity at the interface. To prevent this difficulty, the viscosity value is smoothed around the interfuce, adding once again some inaccuracy. Since the value F = ½ is supposed to represent the free surface, it results in a smeared fluid surface. An alternative to the fixed mesh methods are the methods in which the mesh covers the fluid domain only, as proposed by Navti and Lewis [5-6], or Gaston and Bellet [7]. Based on updated Lagrangian schemes, they must be associated with an ALE formulation (arbitrary LagrangianEulerian) in order to reduce the number of full remeshing operations."

Reactions between solids and a gas phase have many interesting theoretical aspects as well as technological applications. The present group had carried out experimental investigations as well as theoretical studies of a number of gas-solid reactions over the past decade and was able to derive interesting results. Studies of the decomposition of alkaline earth carbonates were carried out by thermogravimetric analyses. The experiments were carried out using thin powder beds as well as iso-statically pressed compacts with thermocouples embedded in the same. The investigations revealed the complexity of the reactions and the impact of the heat- and mass transfer aspects on the reaction kinetics. In the case of BaCO3, the kinetics of decomposition was complicated by the formation of a liquid phase. In the case of SrCO3, the reaction kinetics could be simulated by theoretical modeling. Gas-solid reactions were also employed as a versatile process tool towards the production of alloys and intermetallics involving transition elements by hydrogen reduction of complex oxides involving transition metals. Thin powder beds were employed to examine the micro-kinetics, while fluidized bed technique was utilized to produce bulk alloys. Preliminary correlations could be drawn between the thermodynamic stabilities of the oxides and the activation energies of chemical reduction steps. Adjusting the process parameters, products at nano-scale could be produced. The structural, mechanical and thermal properties were investigated in the case of these products. The potentialities of this method as a green route to produce industrially important alloys and intermetallics with unique properties are demonstrated.

High temperature deformation characteristics of austenitic 304L, and martensitic 410 and 416 stainless steels were investigated by conducting compression tests over a wide range of temperatures and strain rates (950-1250 C and 0.001-20 s-1). Flow behaviors of the three alloys were characterized. Optical metallography was performed to determine the as-deformed microstructures. The flow behaviors were related to microstructural phenomena during high temperature deformation. Dynamic recrystallization was responsible for the flow softening. Both dynamic and static recrystallization were operating, and the recrystallized grain size increased with increasing temperature and decreasing strain rate. Strain rate sensitivity was found to increased with increasing temperature and decreasing strain rate. No defects such as cracking and shear bands were observed at those test conditions. Preferred processing conditions can be selected by considering as-deformed microstructure and strain rate sensitivity.

Copper anode slime is an increasingly significant resource for precious metals such as Au, Ag and Pd. The extraction of Au, Ag and Pd from decopperized anode slime by different pretreatments and different lixiviants including cyanide, chloride, thiourea and thiosulfate have been investigated. When oxidizing roasting pretreatment was carried out under the conditions of roasting time 120min and temperature 625 ℃, the removal ratios of S and Sb could reach 82.18% and 98.52%, respectively. And the following alkaline leaching of calcine could result in the dissolution of 46.40% Cu and 98.48% Pb. The optima leaching ratios of Au, Ag and Pd reached 99.48%, 97.69%, 94.79% by cyanide leaching, and 95.01%, 79.84%, 96.59% by chloride leaching, and about 95.21%, 95.66%, 48.79% by thiourea/thiosulfate leaching.

Pioneering work at the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has produced a personal computer (PC)-based, software-driven video photometric color sensor for real time process control of metallurgical streams. The video photometer is an inexpensive optical sensor which operates in the visual area of the electromagnetic spectrum and collects color information through plastic optical fiber. The red, green, and blue (R/G/B) voltage components of the color video signal are digitized and characterized through software and then presented as the control variable for software-based proportional-integral-differential (PID) control. This sensor has been successfully employed in the control of a laboratory copper electrolytic circuit. With this sensor, copper solutions were analyzed on-line without the need for sample removal, dilution, mixing or reagent addition, thereby allowing for the real time control of the circuit.

"During 2007, Codelco-Chile carried out industrial tests to validate the Continuous Converting Process in the Teniente Converter of the Codelco Norte smelter.For planning and starting up the tests, a predictive, analytical and dynamic model was developed to support operational decisions. The dynamic model was developed using the METSIM® platform and dynamic data exchange (DDE) to operate smoothly with MS Excel®. The main feature of this real-time model was the on/off-line ability to work and gather data from either the smelter’s PI system® or database, and simulate the operation with or without scheduled events and controls.The main model development aspects, which include thermodynamics, metallurgical and kinetic considerations, slag-type and on-line mass and heat balances of the process, as well as the successful validation of the model, are presented and discussed in the present paper."

At Lonrho Platinum in South Africa, ores from both the Merensky and UG2 reefs of the Bushveld Igneous complex are treated by flotation and smelting to produce a nickel-copper matte which serves as a collector for the platinum group metals (PGM' s). The nickel-copper matte was originally shipped to Norway for treatment and recovery of the contained base metals, with the return of the PGM rich concentrate to South Africa. The Lonrho Platinum Base Metal Refinery was commissioned in 1985. The original process employed a Shenitt Gordon design. The converter matte is treated in a refinery which utilises both atmospheric and pressure leaches for the dissolution of base metals to produce nickel sulphate crystals, copper cathode and a PGM concentrate. This paper refers to flowsheet and operating changes as well as improvements within the Base Metal Refinery.

A patent is a right granted by the government to exclude others from making, using, selling, offering to sell, or importing a claimed invention. Once the right is granted, the patentee may use the U.S. Federal Courts to enforce that right. Reading a patent from a litigation perspective is quite different than reading it from a technical perspective. The Judge's interpretation of the claims will affect their scope, and likely the ultimate outcome of a patent case. Additionally, the patent right can be challenged. If done successfully, the patent can be rendered invalid or unenforceable. The likelihood of success, and well as the achievement of other litigation goals is often influenced by the forum where the litigation is initiated. Finally, patent litigation costs are significant, and will weigh heavily in the decision to file (or fight) a patent lawsuit.
