Cementation or metal displacement reactions such as Cu2+ + Fe Cu + Fe2+ are among the oldest known hydrometallurgical reactions. They are still used in the recovery of some metals and in the purification of process liquors and waste water streams. However, they are often more complex than the stoichiometric reaction would suggest because they involve the simultaneous deposition of one metal onto a second which is dissolving. For example, sometimes a cementation will not take place, even though it is thermodynamically favoured. On other occasions, a cementation reaction will start but come to a halt as the depositing metal blankets the reacting surface. On yet other occasions, side reactions, catalyzed by the deposit, can be important. In this paper, the electrochemical basis of cementation reactions is described. The conditions for each of the complications encountered in these reactions are described and illustrated by examples drawn from a number of hydrometallurgical processes. The cementation reaction between activated carbon and gold thiosulfate is also briefly described, this reaction being unusual in that no dissolution of the carbon occurs.

"Hot ductility of Nb-V-containing steel has been studied by theoretical calculation and thermal simulation experiment. Meanwhile, microsegregation and precipitates were analyzed. The results showed that segregation degree of elements S, P, 0 is greater in mushy zone, while, the hot ductility was deteriorated by inclusions of Fe(S,O), (Fe,Mn,Si,Al)(S,O) in the interdendritic region. At the temperature 1100°C, a few NbN particles, 60-70nm, have little effect on mechanical property. In the temperature range 1000°C to 975°C, R.A declined rapidly from 82.36% to 69.61% with the diameters decreasing from 20 to 10nm and quantity of particles increased 23 to 45inds/µm2, respectively. In the temperature range from 900°C to 850°C, R.A reduced unobviously from 34.27 % to 30.01 % with ferric films thickening gradually. The critical stress, 52.38MPa, was equal to tensile strength at 975°C. Intergranular fracture was easy to occur with higher critical stress below 975° C.IntroductionProductivity and product quality of slab are seriously affected by cracks during continuous casting and the influencing factors of cracks are various[l]. From microcosmic angle, resisting deformation ability of initial solidification shell decreases obviously with solute elements segregation which can urge the low melting point ofliquid film to form at grain boundaries[2, 3]. Meanwhile, with temperature decreasing, particles would precipitate as the practical solubility product is greater than equilibrium solubility product. The carbonitrides would lead to stress concentration at austenite grain boundaries. Therefore, the transverse cracks of microalloyed steel would form during the straightening operation in the continuous casting process. The hot ductility of steels in the temperature of mushy zone was characterized by microalloy elements segregation, zero strength temperature (ZST) and zero ductility temperature (ZDT). The nature, shape, and size of precipitates have been investigated by TEM (JEM2100). Hot tensile test with low strain rate was simulated by Gleeble-1500. The objective of present study is to provide reference for zero defect of microalloyed steel during continuous casting process."

A real-time dynamic simulation model has been developed to characterise the flash furnace operation at the Chagres smelter. This model permits the operators to plan the process to meet the Peirce Smith converters' schedules and feed the acid plant with gases that satisfy its best operating efficiency range. Essential control parameters for the furnace (process air enrichment, oxygen coefficient and supplementary heat) are calculated to satisfy process targets such as matte grade, slag silica and matte/slag temperatures. These calculations are carried out with a real-time simulation. Flash furnace control and operational stability permits setting up control strategies that streamline the flow of copper to converters and of sulphur to the acid plant.

In this paper, the technology of producing fluxed pellets by using hydrated lime as binder instead of bentonite was carried out. Green balls with 0.8% bentonite and others with 2% hydrated lime were obtained under the same conditions of 1.5% coke, 1.45 basicity and balling at 8.5% moisture for 13 min in disc pelletizer. The properties of two types green balls were as follows: drop numbers of 4.8 to 5.0 times/0.5m, compressive strength of 19.7 to 24.2 N/pellet and thermal shock temperature of 280 to 385?, respectively. Comparing with bentonite as binder, the compressive strength of fired pellets with hydrated lime is elevated by 13.8% and climbs up to 3113 N/pellet under the following conditions: preheating at 1050? for 10 min and firing at 1300? for 15 min. The hydrated lime also improves the metallurgical performance of fired pellets. The reduction index was enhanced from 68.6% to 70.6%, RDI+3.15 increased from 90.1% to 98.8% and reduction swelling index dropped from 22.4% to 7.4%, respectively. Therefore, hydrated lime can not only replace bentonite as binder to enhance the firing behaviors of green balls, but also effectively improve the metallurgical performance of fluxed pellets which can be used as high quality feed for blast furnace.

"1. Introduction The North-Bohemian Basin area is known for its largest Czech brown coal deposit. About 50% brown coal reserves have been exploited in the North-Bohemian Basin by the mining company of Severoceske doly, a.s. (North Bohemian Mines, j.s.c.) today. The opencast mining of brown coal naturally led to vast landscape damages. Therefore reclamation work has acquired great significance. The specific feature of Severoceske doly, a.s. mining is the fact that the mining has been realized in two geologically absolutely different localities. This fact demands even rather different methods of reclamations. The main problem at Doly Bilina localities is the occurrence of overburden rocks from the series of rocks of coal seams. These rocks are texturally light but large amounts of coal (cca 5 %) and sulphur (cca below 3 %) which makes the soil reaction extremely acid. If they appear on the surface of the dump, they create a phytotoxic area, reclamation of which requires special methods. Rocks from Doly Nastup Tusimice localities are more suitable to reclamation use, but texturally extremely heavy rocks with large fraction of physical clays appear there that can generate a sterile soil area. Their reclamation requirements are completely different from those on Doly Bilina phytotoxic areas. That is the reason of the application of some non – traditional restoration methods. This report briefly summarises the experience in application of fertilizable soils, power plant stabilizer, power plant ash and aerial sowing of charlock. The results are documented by the monitoring of the physical, mineralogical and pedological parameters of rocks in testing areas.2. Properties of Overburden Rocks in Opencast Mines Bilina and Libous The reclamation work methodology in the North Bohemian Basin is above all determined by the properties of overburden rocks which occur in the top horizon of the reclaimed sites. The research of the rocks reclamation properties dealt with four current mining localities in the central part of the basin. It concerned the Bilina and Libous mines. This chapter states the stratigraphic status properties of these sites with respect to reclamation availability. The total status of the area of interest is shown in the figure No. 1."

During the electrorefining of lead by the Betts process, ionic concentration gradients become established within the slimes layer. These gradients contribute to precipitation of secondary products and to gradients in electrode potential applied to slimes filaments, and thereby affect the dissolution of noble impurities. This paper describes the experimental results obtained when a typical lead anode was dissolved under galvanostatic conditions with concurrent interruption of current at preset slimes thicknesses. Reference electrodes were incorporated within the lead anode to follow the potential gradients across the slimes electrolyte. Samples of the slimes electrolyte were withdrawn in-situ and their compositional changes were related to transport processes across the slimes layer. Upon current interruption the anodic overpotential decays, first abruptly (as the uncompensated ohmic drop disappears), and then slowly (due to the presence of a back E.M.F. created by ionic concentration gradients that decay slowly). Current interruption measurements showed that: (A) concentration gradients exist across the slimes layer, (B) inner solution potentials within the slimes layer can be larger than those measured from reference electrodes located in the bulk electrolyte, (C) secondary products can shift the inner solution potential to negative values that reverse upon re-dissolution and (D) ionic diffusion is seen upon current interruption but it is complex and difficult to model due to the presence of processes that can support the passage of internal currents. SEM and X-ray diffraction analysis of the slimes filaments indicated that secondary reactions leading to the formation of Si02 and PbF2 take place (mainly at the anodelslimes interface). The onset of these reactions and their relationship to the Pb-F-Si-H20 Eh-pH diagram are linked to the industrial operation of the Betts process.

Spent Ni-Cd batteries contain in the electrode materials heavy metals like Ni, Cd and Co, which must be recycled due to environmental problems. Pyrometallurgy is normally used for recycling these end-of-life products, but alternative processes by hydrometallurgy, integrating also physical operations, can be used. Hydrometallurgy seems to be useful, because metals can be efficiently recuperated in chemical forms with commercial value. The economical viability of this recycling process can be improved increasing the treatment capacity, through the application to different types of residues with similar characteristics like Ni-MH and domestic batteries, or other residues containing Ni/Co, like sludges, dusts or spent catalysts. Spent Ni-Cd batteries were first physically processed using shredding and wet sieving operations. Best results were achieved using an output of 6 mm in the shredder and 1.4-2 mm in the physical separation by wet sieving, resulting a fine fraction containing 70% of the initial electrode material and only 6% of the initial scrap. The acid leaching of the obtained material in the previous operation was studied, being the parameters like: temperature, H2SO4 concentration and the liquid/solid ratio (L/S) optimized. The values attributed to the factors which concerned the best results obtained on the leaching process were mainly influenced by Ni recovery. In opposition, Co and Cd were easily leached in a wide range of conditions. To attain an overall recovery, with minimum costs, of the three metals, the values of T~100ºC, [H2SO4]=2.3-2.7 M and L/S=8-10 L/kg were considered the most appropriate.

Current conditions in the copper market demand that mine and plant operators make budgeted production targets at the lowest possible unit costs. For those companies bringing new production capacity on-line, achieving budgeted production levels as quickly as possible after start-up is vitally important to minimize unit costs and to begin a positive cash flow. Whether the objective is to simply improve unit costs or successfully start-up a new, complex plant, success will be strongly influenced by .the skill levels of the operators :and supervisors. The only way to assure return on plant investment, and to survive during depressed metal prices, is to ensure that plant operators have the knowledge to effectively run the plant. Technology available in computer-based, multimedia training systems, including: interactive animation, videos, voice-overs, schematics, and text can now be used to train operators at their own pace using plant-specific information. Additionally, it has been shown that learning through multimedia provides a higher degree of long term retention than more traditional learning methods.

"The study on the preparation of mono-dispersed liquid droplet was performed using ultrasonic as one of the steps of producing the perfectly mono-dispersed particle. The ultrasonic system was a 33.6kHz ultrasonic generator, an amplifier, an electric distortion element, and a bolted Langevin type horn installed in .a cell. For the first time, a liquid pillar under a nozzle of the cell ·was stably formed. Then, dense and coarse parts were alternatively constructed by oscillating the wavelength of the ultrasonic.· The diameter of those liquid droplets were found to be· perfectly uniform, therefore, it was measured by ""multiplex photography"" using a synchronized stroboscope with the ultrasonic.- From the results, more than 30,000 of perfectly uniform liquid droplets in 1 second were observed by this method.IntroductionRecently, research on the control of physical form is done in various fields of industry. Some examples are the processing technology of the minute compound material of micro-machines and integrated circuits, and the form control of molecule size like catalysts. There is a need for such material to take on various forms in correspondence to its use. ""Form control"" as used in this study will indicate ""research on physical chemistry factors which determine the size of the material"" and will refer to the contour uniformity of comparatively little particles. A well-known method of preparing particles is to spout a mist of liquid and slurry from a nozzle l) 2). Particles for metals, catalysts and food have been prepared by this method. In this case, although an approximate particle diameter can be decided by controlling the nozzle diameter and the violent outflow velocity, it is not easy to completely control ·the contour and to prepare a particle with uniform diameter. ·However, the preparation of perfectly uniform particles is necessary for solders for the adhesion of electronic wiring 3), ion exchange resins4), catalysts and so on. Large quantities of fine particles and super-fine particles are generated when manufactured in the usual way. Large quantities of these fine· particles and super-fine particles have polluted the internal and external' environments of factories. The products yield' ·decreases, also. From such a background, this study examines the preparation of perfectly uniform particles that could be· collected -100% as products. Recently, NASA has succeeded in the preparation of perfectly uniform particles in zero gravity 5). But the preparation of 'perfectly uniform particles by this method is difficult, and it can not be used in general industry"

The statistical analysis of the slag composition influence on copper losses to discard slag in the reverberatory furnaces No.1 and No.2 in the RTB BOR, Copper Smelter and Refinery (Yugoslavia) is presented in this paper. The model for the slag basicity calculation is determined, and connected to the copper distribution coefficients between the matte and slag phase. The influence of all components on the slag structure is also illustrated.

"The steelmaking industry has drastically reduced its energy consumption in the last fifty years, and today’s technologies are considered to operate at their optimal efficiency with respect to energy needs. To cope with new constraints related to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, a change of paradigm is necessary. One of the promising technologies that could be deployed to help reach CO2 mitigation targets relies on the intensive use of electricity: molten oxide electrolysis (MOE). This paper presents the key process parameters that need to be tuned to address the practical needs for both high productivity in a steelmaking reactor and for an energy efficient process. Herein we show that contrary to common perception, the electrolysis process for ironmaking requires less energy than today’s chemical reduction route. Furthermore, we prove that most of the energy that must be provided to operate the electrolytic iron production cell is thermal energy which is readily generated by joule heating during electrolysis due to large currents being passed through the electrolyte. The energy consumption of the electrolysis cell is therefore shown to be highly dependent on the cell configuration and the chemistry of the electrolyte. As a consequence, the CO2-impact of the technology strongly depends on both the power production mode and the technological choices for design of the process, including cell configuration. Surprisingly enough, even when the electricity generation is not carbon-free, MOE still appears to be viable from the perspective of reducing GHG emissions providing sound reactor design considerations are made.IntroductionIn the context of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions mitigation, the steelmaking industry is considering several techniques that could sustain the efforts and progress achieved by this sector in the last decades [1]. A recent report [2] on potential routes for low-CO2 steelmaking highlighted for all techniques both the strong dependency of CO2 emissions on electric power production mode and the need for a decrease in energy consumption per tonne of steel. Incited to innovate with respect to this last criterion, the steel industry considers electrolysis to be a promising technological solution, and in particular the molten oxide electrolysis (MOE) process. This process conducts electrolysis in a mixture of oxides that dissolve the iron oxide feed, which by the action of electric current is decomposed into liquid iron and oxygen gas. The opportunity for reduction in energy consumption during steelmaking by MOE is commonly attributed to the “direct” pathway from iron oxide to liquid metal offered by the use of a molten oxide melt and operation at a temperature above the melting point of iron, ideally 1600°C, to provide enough superheat for tapping the molten iron product:"

"Current Activated Tip-based Sintering (CATS) is a new process for the powder-based fabrication of macro, micro and possibly nano-scale features and shapes. This new and unique process enables selective sintering of powders by localizing electrically activated sintering conditions through a stationary or moving electrically conducting tip. We present preliminary experimental results on the effect of tip size in the CA TS process as well as the effect of initial powder particle size on the sintering behavior of nickel powder.IntroductionSpark Plasma Sintering (SPS) has been the center of attention of numerous researchers due its noticeable advantages over conventional sintering techniques such as rapid heating rates, lower sintering temperature and shorter holding times. Research on SPS has been applied on a wide variety of materials such as pure metals [ 1], ceramics [2], composites [3], nano-materials [ 4], biomaterials [ 5], shape memory alloys [ 6] and many other material systems. However, it has been mostly limited to bulk materials with simple shapes with a few exceptions ofresearch efforts where the effect of electric current was combined with metal forming processes such as spark plasma extrusion [7,8] and electric rolling of powders[9]. In this paper a novel process (Current-Activated Tip-Based Sintering (CATS)) is discussed where electric current and pressure are applied simultaneously through a small conducting tip (stationary or moving) over a conducting powder compact. This process has the potential advantages of sintering complex geometries with minimum energy requirements as unconventionally high current densities can be achieved due to the small contact area between the tip and the powder compact. Furthermore, by controlling the tip size, it can be possible to sinter features on the macro-, micro- and even nanoscales."

Oxygen-flame converting of a solid ground matte containing heavy non-ferrous metals in a wide range of concentrations is one of the perspective trends meeting the demands of modern non-ferrous metallurgy. As. a result, of semicommercial tests on oxygen-flame smelting of nickel matte containing 13,5-17,5% Ni; 0,45-0,65% Co under continuous autogenous conditions a converter matte containing 68 8-75,0% Ni and 0,48-1-,0% Co and ferrite -calcium slag containing 1,4-8,4 Ni and 0,16-0,56 Co were pro¬duced. Nickel recovery in a converter-matte was 76,2%, copper - 58,'2% and cobalt recovery in. a slag was 90%. Slag cleaning in an electric furnace allowed to after-recover nickel and cobalt in an alloy to produce a dumpy slag containing 0,03% Ni and 0,02% Co. The development of modern' ecologically pure energy-saving autogenous technologies of the treatment of sulphide raw materials containing heavy non-ferrous metals makes certain demands of the perfection of a process of converting rich sulphide-metallic intermediate products obtained at autogenous smelting. These-demands were connected first of all with the fact that converting process stages because of process periodicity are more unfavourable from the point of ecology, power intensity and unit stability. Besides, during rich matte treatment the problems connected with heat shortage when using air blast and heat excess-when using top oxygen blast to treat luquid matte a-rise and when enriching air blast by oxygen up to 26% fast erosion of the brickwork of a tuyere zone takes place. The technology of Outokumpu and Kennecott companies-on solid- copper matte converting in a flash smelting furnace using air blast is not universal as its possibilities are limited by certain composition of mattes. Besides, flash smelting to produce highly basic or combined slags requires larger enrichment-of blast by oxygen or extra fuel feed. Organic compound binder can effectively enhance the strength of green pellet and reduce the addition amount of binder during pelletizing. However, compared with traditional bentonite binder pellet, the compressive strength of the preheated and roasted pellets significantly declined. It is of significance to resolve this problem for the application of organic compound binder. In this paper, magnetite concentrate was used as raw material, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)- bentonite compound was used as binder, characteristics of preheated and roasted pellets and the effects of additives on that were systematically studied, The results show that sodium acetate can effectively improve the characteristics of the finished compound binder pellets. The compressive strength of the preheated and roasted pellets were increased by 52/N·p-1 and 342/N·p-1 respectively when the addition amount of sodium acetate is 2.2%wt of compound binder. Moreover, sodium acetate has no adverse effect on pelletizing process and drying characteristics of green balls.

Fault diagnosis systems have attracted growing interest in a number of engineering fields. The number of applications has increased and successful results have been widely reported. The fault diagnosis system presented in this paper is integrated, and it monitors the states of the process and performs fault detection and diagnosis on the process equipment. The monitoring of process states is carried out by means of Kohonen Self-Organising Maps that is a powerful tool in visualisation and analysis of high dimensional data in engineering applications. This paper presents the results of SOM analysis carried out on the Outokumpu flash smelting process. The subsystems analyzed in more detail are the condition of the concentrate burner, the condition of the gas line on the basis of the pressure distribution in the process and the cooling water circulation of the waste heat boiler, and the condition of the furnace and furnace equipment on the basis of the temperature distribution in the furnace and gas line. "In recent years, zinc recovery from flue dusts and other industrial wastes has been increased, offering to the market a large tonnage of secondary zinc oxides, which can not be processed directly to render high quality zinc because of the hazardous impurities and halogens content.The ZINCEXTM Technology has been commercially applied for more than thirty years and represents the most suitable solution to deal with secondary or crude zinc oxides due to its flexibility, simplicity, and cost-efficiency, allowing production of SHG electrolytic zinc and pure zinc sulfate salts thanks to the flexibility and selectivity of the zinc solvent extraction unit regarding to get rid of impurities.A dual plant able to produce electrolytic zinc and crystallized zinc sulfate has been engineered to provide a flexible and profitable solution to zinc market. A description of the study and the relevant achievements is presented in this paper.IntroductionZinc is a valuable commodity in the marketplace and can be recycled again and again and still maintain its physical and chemical properties. Zinc recycling offers both environmental and economic benefits such as reducing volumes of material that end up in landfills, saving energy by reducing the need for mining and smelting, and relieving environmental impact on the land and water, and conserving zinc ore [1].The supply of zinc able to be re-processed will be increasing from year to year according to secondary materials enter the recycling stream, and as a result, more recycled zinc will become available in the market. Thus, some existing zinc refineries are implementing an annexed treatment line to process secondary oxides in conjunction with primary zinc concentrates [2].The galvanized steel scrap is normally recycled in electric arc furnaces or in basic oxygen furnaces, which generates a large tonnage of zinc-bearing flue dusts (EAFD). Around one million ton EAFD is yearly produced at the USA and the EU, respectively. The flue dusts are treated commercially by pyrometallurgical ways such as waelz kilns, electrothermic furnaces, etc, to yield secondary zinc oxides that can not be processed directly to render high quality zinc because of the hazardous impurities and halogens content [3]."

Recovery of uranium in conventional ion exchange circuits, using strong base or weak base resins containing quaternary or tertiary amine functional groups, is based on an anion exchange mechanism. In saline liquors, chloride competes with uranium for the active resin sites and reduces resin loading. This results in significant negative impacts on the IX process in terms of plant throughput and operating costs. In this paper we present the results of a study on the recovery of uranium from an acidic in situ leach liquor containing approximately 9 g/L chloride. A range of resins was tested, and a high capacity strong base resin was identified with significantly enhanced loading compared to conventional resins. Other process-relevant criteria such as loading kinetics and elution efficacy are also discussed. The process developed was successfully tested during a recent ion exchange pilot plant operated in conjunction with a field-leach trial.

Rare earth elements (REE) are regarded today as highly critical raw materials but currently lack suitable recycling processes. A combined hydro- and pyrometallurgical process aimed at REE recovery from used NdFeB permanent magnets was recently developed by the CEA. The process integrates the physico-chemical treatment of magnets, followed by a solvent extraction step for the recovery and intra-REE separation using a selective extractant. A subsequent pyrometallurgical treatment via molten chloride salt electrolysis allowed the isolation of pure Dy metal. Technical-economic assessment and life-cycle analysis were also conducted. Following this first successful demonstration, a new project aimed at the recovery of REE from end-of-life nickel-metal-hydride batteries is currently being developed in association with industrial and academic partners. The project aims at evaluating from an experimental and economic perspective different processes converging at the production of value-added products such as cermet materials for catalytic applications, purified REO concentrates, or metallic alloys.

"Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a valid environmental evaluation method and enterprise environmental management tool used in industrial ecology areas. In this paper LCA was newly used to evaluate the environmental impact of manufacturing of alumina by Bayer process in china from two aspects of logistics and energy flow, GaBi software acted as analysis tools with evaluation model established, and several environmental impact assessment criteria were selected based on the actually typical date of Bayer alumina producing process. Evaluation results show that alumina manufacturing by the Bayer process has a great impact on the global warming and human health of respiration, even roasting process gives rise to the greatest impact of winter fog index. Scenario analysis proposed ways of reducing environmental load caused by Bayer process including: (1) the economic and efficient use of mineral processing technology; (2) optimization of energy use, saving power consumption or the use of new more economical source of energy; (3) actively promote the use of innovated technology and equipment in alumina manufacturing and waste such as red mud utilization process.1 IntroductionSince 2002, China is already the world's biggest producer of aluminium, in 2007, China aluminum production has accounted for above 1/3 all over the world, 2009 for 13 million tons and to the end of 2010, China aluminum production is expected increased to be over 15 million ton [1,2,3]. While as the raw material for producing aluminum the alumina production in china has up to 19.46 million tons of the world's total quarter in 2007, by the end of 2009 China alumina production has achieve to 23.78 million tons [4,5]. China has rich bauxite resources with proven reserves about 23 million tons, but the great majority of china bauxite is hard monohydrate diaspore type with low ratio of aluminium silicon, high impurity content and poor aluminum dissolution performance, that cause high energy consumption, long and complex process, high production costs and heavy environment load[6,7]. Before most used alumina production was sintering process rather than Bayer method in china, over the past decade Bayer method has been widely applied instead of sintering process or combination both forming joint process, premise is improving bauxite quality by mineral processing or adding imported rich bauxite mineral[6,8]. In general each ton production of alumina needs bauxite 1.6~2.20t, limestone 0.7~1.7t, soda 0.250kg, fresh water 12.30 cubic meters, in addition to consume large amounts of energy, and emission waste water over 8.0 cubic meters, dust 2.3~5.7 kg, red mud 0.8-1.5 tons. In china Red mud yield nearly 30.0 million tons every year, accumulated stock is approximately 0.2 billion tons, by 2015 accumulative total red mud is expected to reach 0.35 billion tons [9-13].We know aluminium industry and alumina production have produced large waste, make large energy consumption and its environmental impact could not be ignored. Expecting to optimize production processes and achieve resource recycling for this industrial process the proper environmental assessment is very necessary. Currently Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is generally recognized as the approved tool to achieve the purpose. The essence of LCA tool is to examine, identify and evaluate a kind of materials, product, process, or a system of environmental impact in their whole life cycle. The life cycle of materials or products includes whole process from raw materials obtained to the final disposal, or more ideal with original or other forms of the whole process of recycling [14-17]."

This paper illustrates sustainability considerations in copper hydrometallurgy using examples of practices at ASARCO LLC, an integrated U.S. primary copper producer. Using the classic Brundtland Commission development of sustainable development, i.e., “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs,” the paper discusses how copper hydrometallurgical processes can be sustainable. The examples used to illustrate sustainable development and related concepts include: water conservation opportunities in milling and leaching operations; implementing green chemistry and promoting product stewardship in the electrorefining of copper.
