Falconbridge, a major base metal producer in the Sudbury Basin of Ontario, identified a need to find a safe and cost effective replacement for welded-wire mesh used to support loose ground during underground nickel mining. Falconbridge took a methodical approach to the concept of a spray-on liner as a screen replacement proving the strength characteristics of the liner as a safe, cost effective, and suitable method of supporting ground. Compact, hydraulic mixing and spraying equipment have been developed and are in use at the Fraser mine. The Tekflex material has been approved as a wire-mesh replacement and has been in use since November1998.

Computer Controlled Scanning Electron Microscopy (CCSEM) is used to analyze indivdual mineral fractions in heavy mineral sands. CCSEM is a fully automated particle analysis technique for the determination of physical and chemical properties of a large number of individual particles. CCSEM enables the precise and accurate determination of the modal abundances of individual mineral fractions (e.g. ilmenite, rutile, zircon, or garnet), their average chemical composition (and compositional variation), as well as their physical properties such as size (e.g. diameter and perimeter length) and shape (aspect ratio and circularity). A unique sample preparation procedure is used to produce representative polished sections from cylinders of raw sand samples such that thousands of grains are present in a polished cross section, but grains are not touching. The combination of this sample preparation technique with CCSEM enables the fully automated analysis of individual grains without the application of de-agglomeration or erosion steps to separate touching particles. Hence, CCSEM yields information representative of the entire area of analyzed grains without systematic bias due to neglect of rim areas by de-agglomeration or erosion steps. Therefore, the resulting data are determined with high accuracy, precision and statistical validity. Because the sample preparation is relatively straightforward, using raw sand samples, and all chemical and physical properties are determined in one analytical session per sample, CCSEM is a powerful cost and time efficient tool for characterizing chemical and physical properties of minerals in heavy mineral sand deposits.

A precious metals refinery’s switch to personal computer-based, three-dimensional piping design saved many hours in the design of a South African precious metals refinery. Bateman Minerals and Industrial provided engineering, procurement and construction management services for Impala Platinum Limited-Refineries’ new $60 million refinery in Springs, South Africa. This project is one of the largest platinum refineries in the world. Bateman evaluated a new design method during this project that involved developing a three-dimensional model for the project. The new method saved time by reducing the man-hours required to generate complete project documentation, including plans, sections, isometrics and material takeoffs. The new method also saved design and construction time by allowing designers to detect clashes before construction began.

Recent NIOSH published information has shown an increase of rapidly progressive coal workers? pneumoconiosis (CWP) in the southern Appalachian coal region (SAR) of the U.S., despite the fact that compliance data indicates that most coal miners have been exposed to coal mine dust concentrations below the statutory limit of 2.0 mg/m³. While the exact cause of these elevated CWP levels in the SAR has not been established, several factors may be contributing to the increase in occupational lung disease among coal miners. The mining of high rank coal is known to lead to higher CWP rates, and this type of coal is mined in a portion of this region. Also, a high percentage of the mines in the region are on reduced dust standards because of the high silica content of the airborne dust resulting in miners possibly being exposed to excessive amounts of respirable silica dust. Exposure to excessive amounts of respirable silica dust can lead to silicosis, a disabling and potentially fatal lung disease. NIOSH's Respiratory Hazards Control Branch has been investigating the possible causes that would account for the observed higher trends in disease progression through literature review, data analysis, and in-mine surveying. The investigation to date has revealed that underground mines are faced with cutting large amounts of rock in order to maintain haulage clearances. Cutting rock not only increases the potential for silica exposure, it increases the requirement for machine maintenance which was a concern observed during dust surveys conducted by NIOSH. Over half of the mines operating in the SAR are on reduced standards due to high silica content. Adequate face ventilation of the continuous miner and roof bolter and limited down-wind operations from the miner are also issues of concern and items which require the constant attention of miners operating in these conditions. Newmont?s Twin Creeks Mine, located in northern Nevada, is producing gold ore from surface mining operations. The ore is currently processed at three different on site facilities depending on the ore type and the grade. The processing facilities operate under stringent geochemical blending constraints that must be met from mine ore deliveries and off site sourced ore. To analyze various strategic options, the technical team utilizes the mathematical optimization approach. However, due to the size and the complexity of the operation, there are unique challenges in optimizing life of mine production scheduling. This paper describes those challenges and the methodology developed to take advantage of different scheduling software systems that effectively compensate each other and result in reasonable guidance. The paper also describes how those scheduling results are reflected in detailed mine plan and cost estimate work.

As a preventive action, the geotechnical department at the mine analyzed the original topography overlying a conveyor tunnel at the mine. Several dewatering drains were installed to intercept water collecting from an old lakebed. Subsequently, 20 steel arches were installed to provide additional support in an area of tunnel where original geological mapping indicated Type IV rock. This project was completed ontime with no loss to production. Construction schedules had to be developed to half hour precision, to accommodate the installation.

Lime production is the largest single chemical use for limestone and dolomite. The term “lime” in this review refers to high-calcium and dolomitic quicklime, their hydroxide forms and dead-burned dolomite. This review is restricted to a discussion of the U.S. lime industry. Production and consumption In 2004, according to preliminary data, U.S. lime production was about 20.1 Mt (22.1 million st), an increase of 900 kt (990,000 st) compared with 2003. Production in2004 was valued at about $1.4 billion. Commercial sales of lime totaled 18.6 Mt (20.5 million st) and captive production was 1.5 Mt (1.65 million st). Total U.S. consumption was about 20.2 Mt (22.2 million st). The majority of U.S. lime trade was with Canada.

The geoscience matrix method has proven useful for valuing metallic mineral properties lacking delineated mineral resources or reserves. However, the method explicitly excludes commodity markets from the factors considered; marketability is assumed. When valuing industrial mineral properties, marketability cannot be assumed, it must considered. Market considerations may also significantly affect the standard weightings of geoscience matrix parameters such as the proximity to known deposits. In some cases, such proximity is desirable but in many cases it is undesirable. Application of the geoscience matrix method to industrial mineral properties therefore requires thoughtful, market-related adjustments to the basic geoscience matrix methodology.

Based on X-ray phase analysis and exploratory experiments, a new technology was developed to recycle multiple valuable elements in spent Al2O3-based catalyst. The experimental results showed that after roasting at 750°C for 30 minutes at an Na2O:Al2O3 mol ratio of 1.2, the leaching recoveries of alumina, vanadium and molybdenum from the spent catalyst were 97.2%, 95.8% and 98.9%, respectively. Vanadium and molybdenum in sodium aluminate solution can be recovered by barium hydroxide and barium aluminate. The precipitation recovery of vanadium and molybdenum was 94.8% and 92.6%, respectively. Al(OH)3 is prepared from sodium aluminate solution using the carbonation decomposition process. The purity of Al2O3 is 99.9% after calcinations, and the recovery of alumina can reach 90.6% in the whole process. The Ni-Co concentrate was leached with sulfuric acid, and a nickel recovery of 98.2% and a cobalt recovery of more than 98.5% were obtained under the experimental condition of 30% (w/w) H2SO4, 80°C, a liquid: solid ratio of 8:1 (by weight), a reaction time of 4 hours and a stirring rate of 800 rpm.

The mechanization of hard rock underground mines offers a large potential for reducing cost, improving efficiency, and increasing profitability. However, in spite of serious efforts by quite a number of equipment developers and mining company initiatives, the industry has achieved little real progress. The task is difficult and the blasting alternative to mechanical excavation is an effective and well-developed method, which continues to improve in spite of its inherent limitations. A large number of machines have been built and tried. Only a few developments have succeeded to make a major impact on underground hard rock mining. It is certain that hard rock mines would be laid out and designed quite differently if the mining engineers knew they had available continuous mechanical excavation machines. In the absence of the machines, mines will be designed for excavation by traditional methods. It is not easy to utilize mechanical excavation in a mine which is designed to operate with normal drill and blast excavation. This is certainly an impediment to machine development. But what if an ore body cannot be mined conventionally, simply because the mining company cannot get permits to satisfy the ever increasing strict EIS requirements of the general public and governmental agencies? This may provide the incentive necessary to develop the equipment that will be needed by a new mining method that will have almost no impact on the environment.

INTRODUCTION It was not very many years ago that tunneling machine manufacturers spent considerable time trying to convince contractors and mine operators of the advantages of mechanical tunnel boring over conventional drill and blast methods. Today there are few doubters left. There is universal agreement that, not only are tunneling machines here to stay, but the ratio of bored rock tunnels to blasted rock tunnels is increasing at an accelerated pace, and within the next twenty years I predict almost all tunnels will be bored by machine. I believe we are today at a very important mile-post in the development of tunnel boring systems. Felix Gaye stated in his recent article (1) "It is important to disseminate between the efficiency of cutting tools and the overall efficiency of the boring operation". Mechanized tunnel boring in the past placed almost total emphasis on the rock cutting and boring ability of the tunneling machine. With advancements in technology and better solutions to the problems of rock fracture, steering control, and structural design, the emphasis today can be placed on the total-system concept. Tunneling machine design, as one of the key elements in the overall system, presents many problems that are not totally solved today. These design problems are, in the most part, not related with rock fracture, but rather with criteria associated with the over-all operation.

This summary of international mineral exploration activities for 2006 draws upon avail-able information from literature, industry and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analysis of the mineral industry based upon these data. Two types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review. They include budgetary statistics provided by Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and information on regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2006 compiled by the USGS.

The “China & East Asia Mineral and Energy Re-sources Symposium — CEAR 2000” was held Jan. 23-26, 2000 in Denver, CO. Conference sponsors included Resources and Technology Symposia of Colorado and the Asian Journal of Mining. The meeting was attended by representatives from China, Japan, Mongolia, Korea, eastern Russia (Siberia) and the United States. The US attendees consisted of interested parties from mining and energy companies, financial institutions, consultants and government agencies. In his opening statements, L. Maness, Jr., president of Resources and Technology Symposia of Colorado, said that the “goal of the conference was to make jobs and friendships and to introduce people to each other.” The conference provided an opportunity for Western mining interests, including mining companies and investors, to meet with government agencies from both sides of the Pacific.

According to the practice of mining management in the system of industrial complexes, the Kazakhstan gold mines are part of the mine processing industrial concerns providing ore-mining and ore-dressing. The cycle technology of winning operations used at the mining of vein deposits in the mines of the industrial concern is mainly provided by the systems of scrapping, scipping and electric locomotion. At present the information and computer system, elaborated on the basis of the Maikain underground mine is intended for creation of the system of automatic operation for the industrial complex mines. The information and computer system includes: - parametres characterising the accepted technology of works; - the main parametres characterising the technical devices of operation and control ; - information about the material, technical and personnel resources available at the mine; - mining and geological conditions of the deposit; - the facilities of the subsidiary units, of the mine; - the direct parametres and technico-economical indices in which the mine efficacy and activity is estimated. The suggested structure of the automatic operation system can be sensibly realized with the application of the microprocessor on the first level, the personal computer IBM PC/XT or PC/AT on the second level. For the complete realization of the project each mine will need 4-5 computers (as PC/XT), one IBM PC/AT and each mine complex - one super IBM for creation of the distributed information bank and its including in the integral world communication system.

The opportunity to make a close study of the available geologic data existing along the line of the California Aqueduct crossing of the Garlock fault in the Tehachapi Mountains was brought about first by my involvement in the prebid examinations, and later with contractors' claim cases. The California Aqueduct crosses through the western end of the Tehachapi Mountains and cuts across the Garlock fault zone at a location about 9 miles east from its junction with the San Andreas fault zone. This is about 65 miles northwest of Los Angeles and 38 miles southeast of Bakersfield (Fig. 1) (1). This map was published after the tunnels were started and shows the corrected geology. At the crossing the fault has north and south branches which extend northeastward for about 22 miles before converging. In the vicinity immediately east of the tunnel line the north branch of the fault starts to converge toward the west. After crossing the line it passes under the upper plate of the apparent easterly extension of the Pastoria thrust fault, so the actual junction with the south branch is obscured. The aqueduct design called for the expected active slip zone of the north Garlock fault branch to be crossed by the 2,800 foot long Pastoria siphon, which connects with the north portal of Tehachapi Tunnel No. 3. The tunnel would extend through the western end of Genghus Ridge which lies between the north branch and the main south Garlock fault zone in Beartrap Canyon. Here again the

Probability function integration method is one of the influence function method. It is a widely accepted method in many mining districts in China and Poland mainly because its theory and formulae can well-represent the surface subsidence basins due to longwall mining of flat or near-flat seams. This paper introduces the basic theory of the probability function integration method and determines its 4 basic parameters by analyzing the measured subsidence profiles in eight longwall panels in Northern Appalachian Coal field. It also discusses the two methods for determining the 4 parameters. Finally the acquired parameters are used to predict the subsidence and deformation of the houses for damage assessment. Comparisons are made between the measured and the predicted subsidence. Probability Function Integration Method The probability function integration method for predicting surface movements and deformations is widely used in China and Poland. The governing equation of the method contains five parameters: subsidence factor, a, offset of inflection point, d, tangent of the major influence angle, tan fl, horizontal movement constant, b, and major dispersion angle e (e = 90. for flat seams). Its applicable range iis much larger including seams less than 30' from the horizontal, critical and noncritical mining and soft to hard overburden.

INTRODUCTION As the population increased along the coast route (California Route 1), and the people’s need to have guaranteed access increased, the landslides and related road closures began to have serious adverse economic impacts. Landslides were causing major long-term road closures about every 10 years on average. In 1983, ground movement at Devil’s Slide caused Highway 1 to be closed for an extended period of time which caused significant economic loss to the surrounding coastal communities. A number of options for bypassing the slide area were considered, and the Martini Creek inland bypass was selected for design. Subsequent litigation led to the creation of the Devil’s Slide Tunnel Study in 1996. The results of this study indicated that a tunnel alternative would be competitive with the inland bypass. The final decision was left to the citizens of San Mateo County, who approved the tunnel alternative in the November, 1996 election After completion of environmental studies and the processing of legal challenges, the final environmental document was finished in 2001. The preferred tunnel alternative was designated to proceed for final design and construction. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Devil’s Slide Tunnels consists of a separated two-lane road, one lane in each direction, which passes through twin tunnels and over twin bridges and then connects with the existing non-separated, two-lane road at each end. Magnetic separation is an age-old technique for mineral beneficiation operations. The existing mathematical models for magnetic separators are quite complicated, and it is very difficult to measure the theoretical separation efficiency. The connectionist approach of modeling, to establish the relationships of the inputs and outputs, is preferred for this kind of problem. Experiments were carried out on a high-intensity roll magnetic separator to develop a database using four input variables (magnetic flux intensity, particle size, splitter position and roll speed) and two output variables (weight recovery and Fe recovery). The artificial neural network (ANN) and statistical methods (MLRG) were used to model the magnetic separation process. For the ANN, the regression coefficient (R2) values between the predicted and measured results were 0.89 and 0.94 for Fe recovery and weight recovery, respectively. Compared to ANN, the multivariable linear regression analysis showed inferior performance in predicting the weight recovery and the Fe recovery. The ANN models for the roll magnetic separator can predict the separation efficiency up to an acceptable limit. These models can be used to modify the operational parameters at mineral beneficiation plants to minimize the effects of variations in the raw material characteristics.

The Construction of Tunnel and Edison Force Mains contract involves the installation of two new force mains to provide a redundant means for sewage conveyance from Middlesex County Utility Authority?s (MCUA) Edison Pump Station on the northern shore of the Raritan River to the Central Wastewater Treatment Plant on the southern shore. The force mains will be installed in a 1,192 m (3,910 lineal foot) long tunnel with a 4.09 m (13'-5') inside diameter, fully gasketed precast concrete segmental lining, which is to be tunneled underneath the Raritan River utilizing an Earth Pressure Balance TBM. The tunnel is anticipated to encounter flowing soils near and beneath the river. Two new 60-inch diameter Centrifugal Cast Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer Mortar force mains will be installed within the tunnel leaving an open utility corridor above the force mains for future consideration. The project also includes the design and construction of two slurry wall shafts with associated piping. The paper will provide an overview of design and provide a case history of the construction of the tunnel and highlights of the construction methods implemented to date.
