An attempt was made to beneficiate low-grade, high-phosphorus manganese ores of the Garividi-Garbham region of Andhra Pradesh, India, by using wet high-intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS). The distribution behavior of both mass and chemical constituents in different size fractions of a typical highly weathered ore sample was studied to obtain information about the liberation characteristics of various chemical constituents. Magnetic separation indicated that in the +208-µm size fractions, P and acid insolubles were concentrated in the magnetic fractions. However, in the -208-µm size fractions, P and acid insolubles were concentrated in the nonmagnetic fraction because of a lower recovery of the magnetic fraction. Variations in field intensity between 1.3 and 1.75 T had little effect on the recovery and the grade of concentrate. The results also demonstrated that phosphorus was associated with all three major constituent phases, namely, oxides of Mn and Fe and aluminosilicate gangue minerals.

With high expectations and promises, computers were introduced to the mining industry in the late 1950s and 1960s. Applications spread in the 1970s when capabilities began to catch up to early promises, and people within the industry began to see the benefits of using computers in business and engineering. The 1980s have seen a wide acceptance of computers, both large and small, and the use of computers is accelerating throughout the industry. Computers have changed dramatically over the last 25 years. The power of some microcomputers matches the capabilities of main frame computers from less than 10 years ago. The variety of software on these micros exceeds what is available on many larger computers today. Changes over the next 10 years are likely to be greater than those of the last 10 years. Making use of available computer technology while trying to cope with the rapid changes in this industry will take much effort within mining. To take advantage of existing computers, consider and evaluate: project needs and applications; professional, administrative, and support personnel; computer software and technology; and computer and related hardware. Note that this list is in the order of decreasing importance. These categories are also presented in the order for which organization and solutions should be provided to get the most out of computers. To start with a computer and go up the list has cost many mining companies needless expenditures, wear and tear on personnel, and frustration. It is assumed for this article that the need for computer tools is self evident. You can do without a computer by using the appropriate techniques (manual methods) with any required shortcuts plus a lot of personnel time. Indeed, several companies are doing that as a "solution" to what to do with their excess engineering personnel in these lean times. However, the future may be better served if some of these people could be prepared to handle the applications and technology presently available. People and Problems To present the factors related to turning the computer into a productivity aide, it may be enlightening to examine some common people problems that reduce productivity. The most valuable resource any mining company has is its mining professionals. And, particularly with computers, people either make the successes or create the barriers, not the machines. The following list of people problems (syndromes and complexes) has been amply observed during some 23 years of the author's experience with computers and their applications in mining. Home Grown Syndrome - "Nobody else can really understand my problem or provide `exactly' what I need to solve it." While there may be some truth to this syndrome, it would be an unusual project that cannot be handled with existing solutions for at least 75-80% of the needs. Having a base to build on will also speed the development of any remaining needs. It does not seem justified to start all over for a new application, even if "our problem is unique." Not Invented Here Syndrome - This "justification" for the continued existence and budgets of some groups has various forms: "It wasn't done here so it obviously can't do the project the way I think it should be done"; and, "If it wasn't invented here, it obviously

THE FUTUREGEN CLEAN Coal project will be the recipient of $1 billion worth of federal stimulus money by way of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), which announced the commitment to the project. The money is expected to kick off years of further work that could finally see the project completed. One of the companies involved, Ameren Corp., said the $1.2 billion project ? which will include some private funding ? still has a number of hurdles to clear.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, has investigated the use of rheology to provide insight into the mechanism of flocculation. A technique developed by Tattersall has been modified and used to explain the flocculation of calcium montmorillonite with polyethylene oxide. The results indicated that there are two types of bond systems operating during the flocculation sequence. Also, flocculation results are highly dependent on the shear rate and the amount of polymer added.

Resource Enterprises Inc. (REI) is exploiting the coalbed gas resource by working in unison with active underground mining operations. At REZ7s pilot project at the Soldier Canyon mine, Carbon County, UT, RE1 has drilled nearly 15.25 km (50,000 ft) of horizontal in-seam and slant boreholes during the initial two years of drilling activity. Produced gas has been sold to a natural gas transmission company on a continuous basis since mid 1983.

Since the advent of longwall mining systems in the United States, mine operators are increasingly relying on methane drainage techniques to supplement the ventilation system. The most commonly used technique is the vertical gob borehole. The number and spacing of vertical gob boreholes per panel is generally based on experience and underground conditions. To design a more efficient methane drainage systems, mine operators must accurately determine methane gas produced. Thus, mine operators must monitor gas flow and methane gas concentration on every vertical gob borehole on active panels at least once or twice during each 8-hr shift. As the mine grows, it is possible to have more than one operating longwall and many vertical gob boreholes. Thus, daily visits to each vertical gob borehole site can become very time consuming. During weekends when methane gas concentrations typically drop because there is no mining activity, borehole sites may not be visited. To obtain accurate gas flow data, a gob borehole monitoring system was designed and constructed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM). Gas flow, methane gas concentration, gas temperature, barometric pressure, and vacuum pressure of the exhaust fan are the parameters collected by the system. The system also includes circuitry for automatic shutdown of the exhaust fan and an alarm system before an unsafe condition is created. Telemetry components were also integrated into the system to allow for transmission of borehole data to the mine office. As a test, the system was installed and operated on a vertical gob borehole for six months. Test results indicated that intermittent measurements with hand-held instruments from vertical gob boreholes were always higher than gas flows measurements made by the gob gas analyzer system. This paper describes the system components, operational characteristics, and the results of the test program.

Dragline stripping operations account for over one-half of the U.S. bituminous coal production mined by surface coal mining methods. The dragline is a popular stripping tool because of its flexibility in varying overburden depths and relatively low operating costs per cubic yard of overburden. Because of the relatively high capital costs of the machines and their use as a primary stripping tool, the selection process is an important step in the mine planning procedure.

The bacterial-oxidation (BIOX®) process for the pre-treatment of refractory ores for gold recovery is marketed by BlOMlN Technologies S.A. The process was originally developed by GENMIN who is still providing testwork, design and commissioning assistance to BIOMIN. Since 1986 three BIOX® plants have been commissioned by GENMIN. A further two plants will be commissioned during 1993 and 1994. The commissioning and operational experiences from these plants are described in the paper.

"As an extension of the work on the effect of OH- on various cations in hydrometallurgical systems, the effect of Cl-, Br-, I- and CN- on cations such as Ag+, Cd2+, Hg2+, Cu+, Cu2+, Co2+, Zn2+, Pb2+ and Sn2+ has been examined in detail. The Newton-Raphson technique has been used to determine the amounts of various metal species as a function of the concentration of anions. Some practical implications of various metal complexes in metal separation and removal from solutions have been examined and discussed.IntroductionUnderstanding the role of anions in hydrometallurgical processes often determines the success of an operation. The successful choice of concentration and type of anions not only leads to an effective extraction and removal of metals (Esmaeili et al., 2005; Brbooti et al., 2011; Wei et al., 2005; Jeppesen et al., 2009; Al-Tarazi et al., 2004), but also to assisting effective separation of various metals, whether it is a solvent extraction, ion exchange operation or even a simple precipitation (Farha et al., 2011; Sevenich and Fritz, 1983; Rashid, 1974).This paper continues the discussion of the role of anions in hydrometallurgical systems beyond the role of OH-, which was the topic of a previous paper (Kim et al., 2014). Table 1 lists various anions that are frequently used in conjunction with metal ions to be selectively separated or precipitated. As seen in the table, many anions are used frequently in hydrometallurgical practices. Some of the more frequently used anions include OH-, SO4 2- and CO3 2-. The halogen elements, Cl-, Br- and I- , as well as CN-, are also used in hydrometallurgical applications, especially in relation to noble metal recoveries (Meng and Han, 1994; Zhang et al., 1996; Sun et al., 1996; Starovoytov et al., 2007)."

The Pittsburgh Safety and Health Technology Center (PSHTC) of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) provides engineering and scientific support to the inspectorate personnel of MSHA. One of the Center's myriad roles is to assist in the investigation of mining accidents, especially those involving fatalities. Center personnel utilize forensics to help uncover the causes of accidents and to make technical recommendations on the prevention of future similar mishaps. To exemplify a typical forensic investigation, this paper documents the methodology used in determining the reasons for a boat sinking, which resulted in a double fatality on a mine company pond.

The Esmeralda mine is located about three miles west of the town of Parral, in the State of Chihuahua, Northern Mexico, and about 400 miles south of El Paso, Texas. The area is serviced by the Interamerican Highway and a branch line of the National Railways of Mexico. The Parral district is quite typical of the semidesert of Northern Mexico, lying near the western margin of the Chihuahua basin and range province known in Mexico as the ?Mesa Central? In the immediate mine area, low rounded hills and rolling plans slope toward the Parral River. Surface elevation at the mine is 5,800 feet. The Esmeralda vein outcrops strongly, but was too low grade to be of interest to the Spaniards, The first claims were staked in 1897 and limited exploration work to a depth of 550 feet was carried out prior to 1912, at which time work was suspended. The Eagle-Picher Company acquired the property in 1944 and by surface diamond drilling outlined an orebody to a depth of 800 feet, Minas de Iguala, S. A, de C.V., one of Eagle-Picher?s totally owned subsidiary companies in Mexico, then unwatered the old workings, developed the mine, installed a modern differential flotation plant and started production lage in 1948. To the present, more than two and ahalf million tons of ore have been mined and milled producing lead and zinc concentrates.

Increasingly, geologists use geostatistical methods to evaluate drilling programs. The complexity of the methods varies with the nature of the available sample information, the objective of the statistical analysis and the geologist's experience. Occasionally, estimating the average sample grade is all that is required. In other instances a semivariogram calculation may be considered. If sufficient data is available, the geologist may wish to estimate blocks or panels of complex shape, using the kriging method of evaluation. Historically, the use of geostatistics by geologists has been limited by a number of factors, most significant being the difficulty in accessing and using computer programs needed to complete the necessary studies. Geologists are often working in remote areas from which electronic communication is unreliable, if not impossible. Even when access to computer programs is technically possible, the costs incurred in accessing and using these programs are often considered prohibitive. In many instances using the programs requires an understanding of computer systems far beyond that which a field geologist can justifiably be interested in acquiring and maintaining.

A multi-lift benching cut-and-fill mining method was adopted at Asamera Minerals (U. S.), Inc.'s Cannon Mine to balance the goals of high productivity and near 100 percent recovery with the need to minimize subsidence. High strength backfill was required to provide effective long-term overburden support and safe working conditions during the pillar recovery operations. Operational designs were evaluated using numerical modeling to predict global mine stability and backfill strength requirements. These models incorporated sequential mining of primary stopes, backfilling of primary stopes and recovery of pillars, and have been transferred to the mine operations group for use in evaluating different production sequences. The modeling has provided a better understanding of the structural response of the mine to excavation of the primary stopes and removal of the pillars. Predictions about the transfer of overburden weight to the abutments, pillars and cemented fill pillars have provided a criterion to evaluate mining plans and production sequence. Comparison of these predictions with actual mine structural performance has developed confidence in the design of the mining method and in the geomechanical design methods being employed. Primary mining of the B-North zone is nearly complete, and the stopes have been generally stable, as projected in the original design. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to assist explorationists and entrepreneurs in deciding whether to invest in gold mining concessions in lesser developed countries (LDCs) and, if so, in deciding which LDCs provide the best opportunity. The first decision is difficult in the face of common notions that foreigners are not welcome - only their money; that the best gold deposits were worked out long ago; that even if you survive the mal- aria, and in spite of 51% control by a national partner, you manage to profit from a new discovery, they will tax your operation to death, or worse yet, nationalize it. Close scrutiny of what happened to foreign investors in LDCs during the “Mexicanizationt” of the 1930's through the "Zambianization" of the 1970's shows that many of these concerns are well-founded historically. But the trend of knowledgeable writers over the past decade seems to be away from this gloomy foreboding, and towards a cautious optimism, based on recently perceptible metamorphoses in certain LDCs' conditions and attitudes. If the explorationist or entrepreneur decides to seize on this apparent opportunity, the second decision -- which of these certain LDCs to invest in -- is doubly difficult, because of the formidable tasks of coming up with a rating system to provide rational comparison, and then gathering enough current, reliable information to apply. In recent years drivage advance rates in the UK have in- creased from 35m per week in the 1980's to 100/150m per week possible today. These extended rates of advance have resulted in an increase in the potential methane, dust and heat generation at the drivage face. In order to disperse this additional pollutant load requires an increase of fresh air at the face. Although advance rates have changed, current auxiliary ventilation practice has not. UK mining law requires that the fresh air must be delivered to within 5m of the face. This has lead to the wide spread use of overlap auxiliary systems, since a pure forcing system set at this distance would lead to excessive airborne dust. UK mining law does not at present consider on-board mounted exhaust scrubber fans to constitute an effective overlap fan within mechanised drivages. In an attempt to determine whether working conditions could be safely and economically improved within mechanised drivages, a series of preliminary full scale gallery trials were con- ducted. A summary of the principal findings of these trials are presented together with an outline of a series of representative CFD simulations, scale model experiments.

INTRODUCTION The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers is developing chemical explosive excavation as a construction technique for use on Civil Works projects. Large chemical charges are being used in multiple charge arrays in a variety of media and topographic situations to achieve actual construction projects. The target is the development of chemical and nuclear explosive excavation as an accepted cost-competitive construction technique. Military research using explosive excavation is also being conducted to apply this technique to military engineering for combat purposes and to military construction. The information gained from both the civil and military research is integrated into the overall development of explosive excavation. This research and development work is being conducted under the auspices of the U. S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station Explosive Excavation Research Laboratory (EERL) located at Livermore, California. This organization was formed in 1962 as the Nuclear Cratering Group (NCG) to carry out the Corps of Engineers (OCE) portion of a joint agreement with the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) to develop nuclear explosives for construction purposes. The AEC, through the Plowshare Division of the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory at Livermore, California, has been responsible for developing nuclear explosives, conducting nuclear cratering experiments, developing nuclear safety information, and developing methods for predicting the shape of the craters.
