Introduction Many old underground mines have been developed extensively into reserves requiring large numbers of workers to maintain and rehabilitate lengthy track haulages and/or belt conveyor systems. Often, large numbers of fans are required to maintain minimal airflows in areas where poor conditions and huge leakages prevail. Problems that beset one such coal mine and projects undertaken to restore it to potential profitability are presented. Brief history The Vesta No. 5 mine was opened in 1908. Drift development began near the Monongahela River, which was the primary avenue for shipping metallurgical coal to coke ovens in Pittsburgh. Over the ensuing 75 years, the main haulage entries were developed a distance of 16.1 km (10 miles) to the present mining area. Track haulage was used to transport coal from working sections to the river loading facility. As haulage distance and areas of high water influx increased, management decided, in 1973, to construct an underground conveyor belt system. The project spanned 36 months and culminated in a system of 22 flights, ranging from 205.7 to 1767.8 m (675 to 5800 ft) long. Six intake and eight return entries were developed as the mains were advanced. These entries provided adequate ventilating capacity over the years, but as extensive gob areas progressed and roof conditions deteriorated, the entries became inaccessible and more resistant to airflow. By 1981, five fans were being used to circulate 943.9 m3/s (555.5 cfm) of air through the mine. An average of 6440 t (7100 st) were produced from 20.8 continuous miner unit shifts and 2.7 longwall unit shifts each day in 1981. The ratio of support to production personnel was 1.94. To maintain the outby 16.1 km (10 miles) of haulage, 110 personnel were used. The average cost per ton was $43.54 ($39.58 per st), resulting in excessive bottom-line losses. The mine possessed a rather promising reserve, mostly in lease, of good quality, medium-sulfur metallurgical coal, but it also had a number of formidable operating problems. Operating problems Contributing factors toward relatively low productivity and high costs were the conditions of the track haulage, conveyor, and ventilation systems. Productivity was affected greatly by downtime associated with the conveyor system, which lacked adequate access for making splices or other repairs. "Magnetic proximity detection systems (PDSs) are used with continuous mining machines (CMMs) to protect miners from striking and pinning accidents. Generators are used in a PDS to create magnetic fields covering the space around a CMM. The PDS determines the proximity of a miner relative to the CMM based on the magnetic flux density detected by a miner-wearable component (MWC) and simultaneously alerts the miner and stops the motion of the CMM if the miner is within a proximity that creates a striking hazard. A stable magnetic field is essential to the accuracy of the proximity calculations performed by the PDS. This paper presents the results of a systematic study of the magnetic influence of two types of steel structures found near a CMM—the body of the CMM itself and the wire mesh used for roof and rib control. The results show that the steel of the CMM body can change the magnetic field distribution and also alter electrical parameters of a PDS by changing its generator current. The study also shows that, depending on the distance between the wire mesh and a generator, the magnetic field can also be altered. INTRODUCTION Continuous mining machines (CMMs) can be up to 10 m (33’) in length and more than 3 m (10’) in width. These machines perform the coal cutting operations in underground room-and-pillar coal mines. Accidents during CMM operation accounts for an average of 250 injuries every year, and 43 miners have been killed by striking or pinning accidents involving CMMs in the United States from 1984 to 2015.Because of these fatalities and injuries, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) promulgated a regulation in 2015 that requires the use of proximity detection systems (PDSs) on all CMMs with the exception of full-face machines (Mine Safety and Health Administration, 2015). Currently, there are five different proximity detection systems that MSHA has approved as permissible for use in U.S. underground coal mines (Mine Safety and Health Administration, 2013). All of these PDSs rely on a miner-wearable component (MWC) to detect the generated magnetic fields that PDSs produce around a CMM (Schiffbauer, 2002). These systems use the magnetic field strength readings in terms of magnetic flux density from the MWC to determine whether a miner is at a safe distance from the CMM. A stable magnetic field is essential for the accuracy of a PDS."

"The Safety Pays in Mining web application, developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mining Program, helps mines determine the potential costs associated with mining injuries. This web app groups injuries by type, either by the cause of the injury or by the nature of the injury. When the user selects one of over 30 common types of mining injuries, the app provides information on the distribution of costs of workers’ compensation claims for that type of injury. Based on other user inputs, Safety Pays in Mining will estimate the total costs of the selected injuries, including an estimate of additional indirect costs, the estimated impact of total injury costs on mining company profits, and provide some examples of other items (services, equipment) on which companies could spend the savings that result from the prevention of injuries. This paper reviews the Safety Pays in Mining web application by discussing the development of the app, how it is used to show the true costs of mining injuries, and how mines can benefit from using this app. INTRODUCTION Injuries on the job cause pain and suffering. They can also profoundly affect profits and daily operations. In addition to paying direct costs or increased premiums for workers’ compensation insurance, a company might need to pay overtime for other workers to fill an injured worker’s job role, cover training costs for a replacement worker, or divert administrative resources in the wake of an injury. Safety Pays in Mining is a web app that estimates the distribution of these injury costs and assesses the impact that occupational injuries have on a company’s profits. The costs of specific types of occupational injuries in mining are not readily available as mining and insurance companies don’t usually share this information. As a consequence, companies only have cost information based on previous experience with their own employees. Therefore, if a mine never experienced a finger amputation for one of its miners, it would not be aware of the possible costs associated with this type of injury. In addition, injury costs are unique in that the cost distribution is so wide — with half of the injuries in our dataset having mean costs higher than 90th percentile costs — just using the average cost of a specific injury type does not provide adequate information. Some injuries involve immensely high costs, and even though the risk of these high-cost injuries occurring is low, mines need to be aware of their potential impact on their company’s financial health."

Magnesium is the eighth most abundant element in the earth's crust and the third most plentiful element in seawater. It is found in more than sixty minerals and in brines and seawater as a magnesium salt. One of the more important magnesium minerals is magnesium carbonate, MgCO3, with a theoretical maximum magnesia, MgO, content of 47.6%; this carbonate form represents the world's largest source of magnesia. The next most used sources for magnesia are magnesia-rich brines and seawater, where it occurs as magnesium sulfate and magnesium chloride. Other commercially important magnesium-bearing minerals are dolomite, CaMg(CO3)2, which serves the aggregate industry as well as the chemical industry; brucite, Mg(OH)2, which is used in the production of both caustic and sintered magnesia; olivine, ([MgFe]2-SiO2), which serves the refractory and heat storage industries; talc, (H2Mg3(SiO3)4), which serves several industries as a filler and as an ingredient in cosmetics; and serpentine, (H4Mg3SiO9). All these minerals are of commercial value because of the desirable characteristics given to them by magnesia and by its placement in the crystal structure. These minerals are the starting raw materials for a wide range of products. These include the production of magnesium metal, and several grades of magnesia used for the production of both sintered magnesia for refractory manufacture and lighter fired caustic magnesia, the latter is used in fluxes, fillers, insulation, cements, decolorants, fertilizers, chemicals, in the treatment of waste water including pH control, and in the removal of sulfur compounds from exhaust stacks. Magnesite is one of several major minerals possessing a dual character, i.e., non-metallic industrial mineral because of its principal end use as a calcined/dead burned raw material in non-metallic end products and magnesium metal. A large percentage of the magnesia used to produce magnesium metal comes from seawater1 brines. The total primary metal production worldwide is about 350 ktpy. This report reviews magnesite solely as an industrial non- metallic raw material. Magnesite for most refractory purposes must have a content of sintered magnesia above 85%, with a preference for those sources that have the potential for 90 to 98% magnesia values. Dolomite, used in large tonnages because of its physical properties in the construction industry, also has a use in the chemical and the refractory industry. In its calcined form, dolomite is used as a slag addition in the making of steel, and it is used in a high-purity calcine to precipitate magnesium hydroxide from brines or seawater. The precipitated magnesium hydroxide is intermediate for the production of deadburned clinker for refractories and the production of magnesium metal. In many cases the high-purity magnesium hydroxide obtained by precipitation with calcined dolomite, or in some cases limestone, has supplanted much of the world's production of magnesia from the natural mineral magnesite. This is especially true of the United States and in major industrialized areas of Europe and Japan. The best known of the minerals directly and widely exploited for its magnesia content is magnesite (MgCO3), one of the calcite group of rhombohedra1 carbonates, which includes calcite (CaCO3), siderite (Fe2CO3), and rhodocrosite (MnCO3), among others. The members of this group enter into a wide range of substitutional solid solutions when the positive ions have similar radii. The radii of magnesium and iron ions are within 6% of each other; hence magnesite and siderite form a complete series, of which the mineral breunnerite (ferroan magnesite) is a well known end member. The radii of calcium ion is 36% larger than that of magnesium ion and only limited substitution exists at each end of the MgC03-CaCO3 series. Dolomite is not a member of the calcite group, but it occurs when calcium and magnesium ions alternate in equal number in an ordered structure among carbonate ions. The result of this relationship is that calcite and dolomite are commonly found intermixed with magnesite. They occur, commonly, as identifiable crystal entities, which can be separated to a varying degree from the magnesite by benefication techniques. Magnesite, when pure, contains 47.8% MgO and 52.2% CO,. The pure mineral is found occasionally as transparent crystals resembling calcite. Magnesite principally contains variable amounts of the carbonates, oxides, and the silicates of iron, calcium, manganese, and aluminum. Although the genesis of natural magnesite deposits can be complex, it is distinguished in nature in two distinct physical forms, namely crystalline, (with a wide range of visible crystal sizes) and cryptocrystalline, sometimes referred to as amorphous, where the crystal size is not detectable to the eye and will range from 1 to 10 pm. The two types not only differ in crystal structure but in the sizes of the deposits and in modes of formations. The crystalline form has a Mohs hardness of 3.5 to 4.0. The color range is from white to black with shades of yellow, blue, red, or gray. The color is not a significant indicator of purity but in a given deposit an experienced person can often roughly grade the magnesite by observing color and crystallinity. Macrocrystalline deposits occur in relatively few, but generally large, deposits on the order of several million tons. The ore shows a marble-like crystal structure and belongs to the sedimentary or metasomatic groups of origin. The cryptocrystalline variety of magnesite frequently occurs in many small deposits, although there are exceptions. Cryptocrystalline magnesite is typically massive with no cleavage and is sometimes descriptively called bone magnesite. The fracture is usually conchoidal, with a hardness of 3.5 to 5.0. The color is mainly white, but it can have tints of yellow, orange, or buff. Accessory silaceous minerals such as serpentine, quartz, or chalcedony are usually present. Calcium minerals are normally absent or in low concentration, this contrasting with the macrocrystalline form where calcium minerals are almost invariably present and some- times in high concentration. The Jerritt Canyon Joint Venture project is located approximately 50 miles (80 km) north of Elko. Nevada, U.S.A. and produces between 250 and 300 thousand ounces of gold annually. The Joint Venture is 70% owned by Independence Mining Company and 30% owned by Meridian Gold Company. Independence Mining Company is the operator. The Jerrin Canyon Joint Venture started operations in 1980 mining a series of open pit mines. Since the early 1990's, the discovery of deeper ores has required the joint venture to develop and mine a significant portion of its annual production utilizing underground mining methods. Underground production started with the West Generator Mine in 1993 followed by the Murray Mine in late 1994. Presently, two additional underground projects are being developed. Underground mining at Jerritt Canyon is budgeted to produce 128 thousand ounces in 1997. This paper documents the major transition/redevelopment of the Jerritt Canyon mining methods.

"A Yieldable Structure for Use in Areas of High Rock Stress & Deformation." Rock stress of up to 9000 psi have been recorded in the mines of the Coeur d'Alene Mining district. Associated with these large stresses are rock fractures and deformation. In order to maintain openings required for mining, large wood preparation structures are constructed to provide access to the work areas for men and materials. These wood raise preparation structures are costly to construct and maintain. Therefore a steel-foam concrete structure was designed and proposed for testing which would be less costly to construct, require no maintainence and maintain its structural integrity while allowing up to 53 inches of wall rock deformation.

Interstate 70 running into the mountains west of Denver, CO is the main access to the state?s numerous ski areas and other tourist attractions. As such, the highway is a vital part of Colorado?s economy. Due to the mountainous terrain in which it winds, I-70 is limited to two lanes in either direction. And, during the past few decades, the volume of traffic has increased to the point where motorists encounter major delays, particularly on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings heading west from Denver, and then again on Sunday evenings heading east. In the past, those delays occurred mostly during the ski season. However, many of the mountain towns have been successful in turning their resorts into year-round vacation destinations. A good move economically, but the pressure added to I-70 has caused even greater traffic delays, sometimes to the point where some Front Range residents avoid trips to the mountains.

Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc.’s Betze open pit is located at the north end of the Carlin Trend, in Eureka County, NV. Ten open pit gold mines exist on the trend, which strikes northwesterly, through the north end of Eureka County and into Elko County (Fig. 1). The final pit will be about 2440 m long x 1550 m wide (8000 x 5100 ft), elongate in a west-northwesterly direction and about 425 m (1400 ft) deep. The pit straddles the Barrick-Newmont Gold Co. property boundary. History The first hole at the Goldstrike Mine was drilled in 1962. Between 1963 and 1964, 17 shallow holes were drilled with little encouragement, in view of the price of gold at $1.12/g ($35/oz). From 1962 to 1975, several different companies explored the Goldstrike property. In 1975, Pancana Industries acquired the property. Coal production in the in the Powder River Basin began its tremendous expansion during the boom of the mid-1970s. New mines were opened from 1976 through the early 1980s. This expansion soon placed Wyoming at the top of the list of coal producing states, where it has since remained. Mines are operated by large companies, with safety and production having equal priority. These mines have been some of the safest ever in the coal industry. Many Sentinels of Safety Awards have gone to them. Safety programs are varied, but there are commonalities. Mine safety at Wyodak Extra training is required of all supervisors. The company offers to pay for any additional first-aid training that employees participate in. Safety departments conduct weekly safety talks. All employees receive the monthly magazine Family Safety and Health compliments of Wyodak. Electricians receive extra training on electric wheel motors, from General Electric. Equipment operators receive extra training from Dresser.

"China is rich in tungsten resource, but they are mainly associated minerals. The similar flotability of scheelite, fluorite, and calcite resulted in the difficult separation by flotation. This work summarized the current situation and the development of flotation reagents, technological process, and mineral processing equipments in China. Fatty acid served as the collector and water glass was the depressant to expand the flotability differences in traditional flotation technology. However the water glass inevitably influenced the flotation of tungsten minerals to a large extend, and the suppressed fluorite was difficult to recover by flotation. Abundant water glass lead to the bad settleability of the tailings and the tail water was difficult to circulate, resulted in serious environmental problems. Recent study proved that the selectivity of benzene armour hydroxyl oxime acid (BAHA) salts was adequate for the separation of tungsten minerals from fluorite, calcite and most silicate minerals without any depressant. By this way, sodium silicate was canceled completely in tungsten flotation, greatly improving the recovery of tungsten and the environmental problems caused by tail water treatment would be solved fundamentally. TUNGSTEN RESOURCES AND DISTRIBUTION IN CHINA China is rich in tungsten resources and the proved reserves accounted for 60% of the world's reserves [1]. However the wolframite has been dried up and the scheelite resources had become the main resource of the tungsten metal. Table 1 showed the most large and superlarge scheelite deposits in China. China has more than 40 large and superlarge scheelite deposits and the total metallic deserves is more than 3 million ton [2]. But most of the deposits were low-grade and the associated relationship was complicated. For example, scheelite was usually associated with wolframite, molybonite, bismuthinite, pyrite, fluorite, and calcite in Shizhuyuan and Yaogangxian mine."

Many mining companies try to fight their way up from small operator and exploration company to major producer. Not many companies make it. Cambior Inc., formed in 1986, is one company well on its way to making it as a major operating company. In 1993, Cambior surpassed 15.5 t (500,000 oz) of gold production and began operations at its world class Omai gold mine in Guyana. At the same time, the company has embarked on a program of geographic and minerals diversification. Cambior, a Canadian company, now has interests in eight mines, three development projects and more than 100 exploration properties in North and South America. The company’s goal is to derive 70% of its income from gold and 30% from base metals and other minerals. Cambior’s moderate diversification into base metals gives protection against negative gold price fluctuations. It also balances the typically short term gold mines and the longer term base metal mines.

Accurate level detection is required to make full use of level in optimizing control strategies for flotation columns. Techniques based on pressure and electrical conductivity are compared. Pressure and conductivity profiles give good agreement on level. Level calculated from single and multiple pressure values became more accurate using, in order, one, two and three sensor locations. The level estimate remained in error, however, because, unlike the collection zone, froth zone bulk density varies with height. A conductivity probe continually updating the conductance profile is a practical method of obtaining an accurate level.

The Ivanhoe district, Elko Co., Nevada, is located in the northern part of the Carlin trend of epithermal gold-deposits, but it differs from most mines in the belt in that Ivanhoe epithermal gold ores are found in 14 m.y. old Tertiary volcanic rocks as well as in the better known Paleozoic sediments. Within the Ivanhoe district U.S. Steel (USX Corp.) discovered and partly developed an epithermal gold deposit largely hosted by Tertiary rocks that, with a 167-hole program, was found to contain an open ended probable reserve of 4.0 million tons of heap leachable open pit oxide ore averaging .042 opt Au. An additional 4.0 m.t. of open pit sulfide ore averaging .048 opt Au were also developed. The U.S. Steel orebody was a blind discovery in that it just barely outcropped, and it was found by drilling through a premineral but barren cover of altered Tertiary volcanic rocks.

"The authors have successfully developed an innovative rehabilitation concept, which meets actual technical standards and minimizes the impact on the operation of a key conveyor tunnel. A flexible and stepwise ground support rehabilitation program utilized a combination of yielding steel arch sections with grout filled fabric hoses, which represents a fast and safe backfilling support system. The system was developed and successfully installed at Bingham Canyon Mine, the world’s largest open pit copper mine, which also includes numerous underground structures. The mine is owned and operated by Kennecott Utah Copper (RTKC) a fully owned subsidiary of Rio Tinto. The system was implemented at a conveyance tunnel, which was originally designed as a railroad tunnel, but was re-commissioned and is currently used as a conveyor belt tunnel to transport ore from the open pit to processing facilities outside the mine. The existing structure showed signs of overstressing due to movements in the surrounding rock mass, which had to be addressed with a yielding support system in order to provide safe access into the tunnel. However, the impact on the conveyor belt operation due to support installation was to be limited to the bare minimum. Keywords: rehabilitation, yielding support, mining, stabilization, and grout filled fabric hose.PROJECT DESCRIPTION The C6 Tunnel is considered a critical asset for the operation of the Bingham Canyon mine as it comprises the standard route for transporting crushed ore from the open pit to the processing facility on a continuous conveyor belt system. The C6 tunnel was originally built as a railroad tunnel. Construction was completed in 1959. The original horse-shoe shaped cross section of the tunnel was 18 feet wide and 24-1/2 feet high [8]. The tunnel length was approximately 18,000 feet. During its service life, the railroad tunnel has undergone several transformations. The length of the tunnel towards the Bingham Canyon pit was shortened over the course of mining operations and the railroad tracks in the tunnel were removed. The invert was partially backfilled (3 feet typical) and a 72 inches belt conveyor was installed. Currently, the C6 Tunnel is nominally only approximately 21 feet high and 15,000 feet long. Ground Support and Rehabilitation Measures prior to 2014 The C6 tunnel was mined mainly with conventional mining methods, using drill & blast as the typical one. However, the weak geological sections, such as those encountered in the Fortuna fault, were excavated by shaping and chipping with machine-held moils [8]."

LiDAR technology has made it possible to map large areas of underground mines accurately and rapidly in three dimensions. MSHA Technical Support began implementing LiDAR technology in conjunction with the Agency’s Pillar Collapse Initiative, using scans to determine width-to-height ratios (w/h) of pillars adjacent to mass collapse areas and to conduct risk assessments for global pillar stability in U.S. stone mines. This work quickly expanded to include change detection, such as measuring many pillars to show which are deteriorating over time. Change detection has also been used in ground falls and squeeze areas to see if they have continued to propagate. LiDAR technology supports accurate data acquisition of unstable mining conditions from safe distances. For example, once the LiDAR scan has been processed, it can measure roof fall cavity heights and volumes with the user at a stable ground location. Some LiDAR scanners can collect geologic data, such as joint orientations.

The Bowie chabazite deposit has yielded the most mined tonnage of any natural zeolite deposit in the United States. Since 1962 the deposit has yielded about 12,000 tons of crude chabazite, with an estimated market value of S30 million when sold as an activated molecular -sieve product. Between 1,000 and 1,500 tons of high-purity crude lump chabazite is now produced annually by stripping and selectively mining the lower, massive, half-foot-thick, "high-grade" bed. All of the chabazite is still shipped out of State for grinding prior to extrusion and activation. Zeolite minerals were discovered at the Bowie deposit in 1875, when Oscar Lowe identified a hydrous silicate related to chabazite or stilbite from a tuff bed that cropped out in the San Simon Valley. It was not until 1959, however, that chabzite, erionite, and clinoptilolite were positively identified as the principal constituents of an altered vitric-tuff horizon that crops out in the area originally described by Lowe. Shortly after the rediscovery of zeolite minerals in the San Simon Valley, several of the major producers of synthetic zeolites acquired land positions covering the outcrops, including projected extensions, and began exploration drilling. By 1980 all of the known chabazite reserves had been acquired by five companies and two individuals. The more than 3,000 holes drilled to explore the deposit and the excellent exposures provided by the strip-mined areas indicate that the chabazite-bearing horizon (known as the marker tuff) is confined to a flat-lying lacustrine section known to the operators as the Green Lake Beds. The deposition of the parent airborne vitric ash and subsequent zeolitic alteration was controlled by many factors, including the lake-bottom topography, depth and cation content of the saline-alkaline lake water, and proximity to post-depositional erosion surfaces. Zeolitic alteration was complete when an extensive system of younger paleochannels deeply eroded the Green Lake Beds. This left only a few erosional remnants of the marker tuff and the lower "high-grade-bed" that constitute the present deposit. Both the channel gravels and the Green Lake Beds are overlain by a section of halite-bearing brown mud-stones, known as the Brown Lake Beds. The bowie chabazite deposit can be used as a model to guide the exploration and development of other zeolite deposits that formed in saline-alkaline lacustrine environments.

During 1992 a number of papers were published on aspects of respiratory disease in US underground coal miners. These included reports on trends in prevalence of coal workers' pneumoconiosis, the risks of developing coal workers' pneumoconiosis in relation to dust exposure, and the relationship between lung disease other than pneumoconiosis and dust exposure. The intent of this paper is to provide a summary of the essential findings from these investigations. PREVALENCE AND INCIDENCE OF COAL WORKERS' PNEUMOCONIOSIS Coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) is usually detected in living miners through use of the chest x-ray. Deposits of dust in the lung, and the fibrotic tissue reactions to the dust, are manifested on the x-ray as small and large opacities. These abnormalities are quantified into degrees of severity using a standardized classification scheme (the International Classification of Radiographs of the Pneumoconioses of the International Labour Office). For small opacities, the scheme provides for a four-point scale of abnormality (0, 1, 2, 3), reflecting increasing profusion of the opacities on the x-ray. In this report, category 1 or greater small rounded opacities (CWP 1+) represents the earlier radiographic stages of pneumoconiosis. Large opacities, indicate the later and often disabling stage of pneumoconiosis, usually referred to as progressive massive fibrosis (PMF). Information collected in a national surveillance program for underground coal miners (the Coalworkers' X-ray Surveillance Program (CWXSP)) and a large epidemiologic study (National Study of Coalworkers' Pneumoconiosis (NSCWP)) provide a means to assess trends in CWP prevalence over the years following the reduction in dust levels mandated by the 1969 Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act (FCMHSA). These programs are operated by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and are described in detail in Attfield and Althouse (1992) and Attfield and Castellan (1992). Both studies were divided administratively into distinct time periods, and the results shown here reflect that division. Figure 1 shows the prevalence of CWP 1+ as determined from data from the CWXSP, plotted by time period and years in mining. There is evidence of a temporal reduction in prevalence. (The lack of an obvious decline in the early 1970s may be an artifact arising from use of different versions of the standard classification.) Introduction The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy and the Institution of Mining Engineers organized the Third International Mine Ventilation Congress held in Harrogate, England. Sixty-one papers were presented and about 300 participants registered. About 30% of the participants came from Great Britain, 20% from South Africa, and about 5% each came from Australia, Canada, China, France, US, and West Germany. The remainder of the participants came from 18 other countries. Eleven of the papers presented dealt with methane, three with diesel exhausts, four with dust, four with radioactivity, 18 with heat, and 15 dealt with main and auxiliary ventilation. Six of the papers dealt with mine fires, which is a boundary region between main ventilation and gas concerns. Ventilation Congress proceedings are available. See ME, December 1984, page 1687, New Books page. With CH4 and radioactivity topics, the Australians dominated since they are becoming large coal and uranium producers. With diesel exhausts, the most important problem in highly mechanized mines, the North Americans were prominent. The South Africans, working in 90% SiO2 in their gold deposits, were preeminent in presentations on dust. They also led in topics related to heat, joined by the West Germans whose mines are getting deeper. In main and auxiliary ventilation, Great Britain and West Germany provided the majority of contributions. Methane The large number of methods for the precalculation of CH4 liberation in longwall mining all contain three elements: gas content of the coal, gas emitting zone (or influence zone of face), and degree of gas emission. Determination of the gas content, commonly accomplished by taking coal samples, does not pose much difficulty. But this is not the case with the other two factors. Most existing approaches rely on rock mechanics observations. Some only rely on intuition or speculation. The West German coal mines conducted a large research project between 1977 and 1982, in which gas pressures around longwall faces were measured. Gas pressures and gas contents can be related. Therefore, influence zone and degree of gas emission can be determined simultaneously. The precalculation of CH4 liberation in room-and-pillar mining is simpler. Since foot and hanging walls remain essentially intact, gas pressure distribution and gas flow can be calculated using hydraulics equations. A key to these calculations is permeability. A group of Australian researchers reported that the permeabilities of rock under three dimensional stress differs from rock under destressed conditions. This fact was known, but no systematic observations existed. These were provided. Methane drainage has been practiced for more than 40 years. It is used with great success in longwall operations. Some of the West Germans think that methane drainage from the footwall is neglected. Under certain geological conditions, they claim this is as important as drainage from the hanging wall. A research project was presented in support of this claim. Considerable efforts have existed for more than 10 years to use methane drainage in room-and-pillar mining. A paper described the accomplishments of Consolidation Coal Co. Since coal and rock are not fractured as much as in longwall mining, gas transport takes place by the slow diffusion from micropores into the cleats. Then, it is transported by laminar flow along the cleats until a drainage borehole or the mine workings are reached. Boreholes about 300 m (1000 ft) long can reduce the gas content of a band of coal 100-m (330-ft) wide by 50% in one year. A paper from India described methane drainage from gob areas. A French paper reported that especially high methane concentrations can be drained from gob areas if the face ventilation is descensional. Methane buoyancy and ventilating pressures compensate each other, and little air dilution by leakage takes place. Another French paper described a newly developed gas and air velocity monitoring system making use of a microcomputer. Four papers on methane dealt with gas outbursts. Two Australian contributions described the problems encountered with CH,-CO2 mixtures and the attempts to solve them with drainage boreholes having 10 to 20-kPa (1.5 to 3-psi) suction pressures. A Hungarian paper described problems and attempts to reduce the risks of gas outbursts in Hungary. Prediction of gas outbursts in coal seams was the focus of an English paper. "Hecla's Greens Creek silver-gold-lead-zinc mill began using carbon dioxide rather than sulphuric acid to control pH in April, 2015. High pH levels in the grinding and lead flotation circuits are caused by the presence of re-mined cemented paste backfill in mill feed and need to be lowered to achieve good flotation response. Carbon dioxide has proven to be quite effective at controlling pH in the lead circuit with greatly improved pH target attainment. The allowable amount of carbon dioxide used is not limited by effects on lead-zinc selectivity and by poor froth characteristics, as was the case with sulphuric acid. Startup and implementation went smoothly, with few operational issues needing to be resolved. Early results from implementation of the system and its effects on mill performance will be presented. INTRODUCTION Hecla Greens Creek is a silver-gold-lead-zinc mine producing flotation lead and zinc concentrates, as well as a gravity gold concentrate. Besides their base metal contents, both the lead and zinc concentrates carry precious metals. The circuit is largely conventional, with SAG and ball mill grinding being followed by graphite removal preflotation, then conventional lead flotation and conventional zinc flotation. Both rougher concentrates are treated in regrind steps, followed by cleaner flotation. The cleaners tails are treated in an unorthodox bulk circuit to produce a low-grade zinc-lead concentrate marketed to Imperial Process smelters (1). BACKGROUND Backfill and Flotation pH The Greens Creek mine is an underground operation in which mined areas, after ore extraction, are backfilled, using rammed paste or pumped slurry. The backfill consists of mill tailings to which approximately five percent Portland or similar cement is added to enhance its compressive strength. Later mining near backfilled areas inevitably results in a considerable amount of old backfill being mixed with new ore before being shipped to the mill. Depending on orebody geometry, mining methods etc., the amount of backfill in mill feed is often 20% to 25% and sometimes even higher. Commercial cement, and consequently backfill prepared using it, contains excess lime. Because of this, backfill in mill feed is indistinguishable from the addition of a large amount of lime, so mill natural pHs often range above 10 or even 11. Similar situations have been recognized for many years at mines throughout the world (2)."

Grinding in steel mills adversely affects the flotation removal of pyrrhotite from magnetite ores. To elucidate the effect of grinding media on the floatability of pyrrhotite, rest potential and short-circuit current measurements were made on electrode combinations of pyrrhotite-mild steel and pyrrhotite-stainless steel. Galvanic contact of pyrrhotite with mild steel increased the rate of surface reactions on pyrrhotite in air-exposed and oxygenated solutions. It was postulated that the formation of ' an iron hydroxide coating on the pyrrhotite adversely affected its floatability. Its formation was minimal when pyrrhotite was contacted with stainless steel. Fine magnetite particles caused slime coating on pyrrhotite surfaces by magnetic interaction and impaired the flotation of pyrrhotite.
