Historically most mine management teams have been forced to operate in a more or less subjective manner. The objectives of mine management are simple and clear. Like other operational managements, mine management teams have the traditional well defined goals of improving efficiency and production while decreasing costs. Unlike other operational managements however, mining teams deal regularly with a vast assortment of uncertainties caused by: - Key production tools being mobile and widely dispersed, and - Non-uniform mining conditions At best in most operations these conditions cause obstacles to productivity and at the same time cause long delay in managment awareness of the obstacles. Planning with delayed feedback of information about necessary deviations is incomplete planning. For these reasons increased operational efficiency remains a constant though somewhat elusive goal.

Significant changes in the markets for coal have taken place since World War II, As used in this study the term ?coal? will refer to bituminous coal, The anthracite industry in size, characteristics, and problems differs materially from the bituminous coal industry, These changes have both influenced and been influenced by the mechanization of mines, and by decreased distribution costs, especially in transportation. It is the purpose of this paper to examine these post-war changes, to assess their impact upon the production and distribution of coal, and to explore future market developments in the light of past and present trends and relationships. The layman lacks adequate informatian on the production, demand, and distribution of coal. There are two reasons for this. First, there is a relative lack of statistics coveting the industry, Coal operators and distributors are not required to file with any government agency the type of much more complete statistics filed by the railroads and public utilities with national and State agencies. The Bureau of Mines assembles much useful information on the coal industry, but several areas, including that of investment and finance, have no central depository which can be used to keep the public informed of the nature and extent of the industry and its problems.

"THE SS640 AGRIGENTO-CALTANISSETTA PROJECT The Caltanissetta tunnel is part of the works for the construction of the second 28km-long maxi section of the SS 640 motorway of Porto Empedocle, from km 44 to the junction of Imera in Sicilian hinterland. Amongst other major infrastructure works, the €740 million ANAS (Italian national roads and highway administration agency) project consists of four twin tube tunnels three of which are being excavated by conventional means. The longest tunnel, underpasses the Caltanissetta city and has a length of 3.9km under a maximum overburden of 120m. The JV consisting of CMC of Ravenna and TECNIS SpA won the design & built tender in 2010. Construction started in early spring 2012 following the approval of detailed design and later on the approval of design for construction. THE CALTANISSETTA TUNNEL The Design Phase Tender design and detailed design foresaw the construction of 13.4m excavation diameter tunnels that were to be enlarged in a second phase to create, every 600m, 50m-long tunnel sections for emergency parking. During the design for construction project phase the JV proposed to replace the 13.4m tunnel with a 15.08 excavation diameter that incorporated apart from the two 3.75m wide lanes a 3.25m wide continuous emergency lane. This significant tunnel section modification was associated with better road safety conditions, simpler and safer construction procedures, better statics for the tunnel section while in terms of overall cost the solutions were equivalent.Geologic context The tunnel is located in the middle of the geologically known Caltanissetta basin that is intersected by various tectonic structures. The geologic context for the tunnel scale, was defined in collaboration with the University of Catania in early project phases. For almost its entire length the tunnel is excavated in the Terravecchia formation that represents the lower part of the stratigraphic sequence that was formed in the Tortoniano period of Miocene. The quite complex geological model is also characterized by the presence of the so-called Trubi formation that consists of clay and marl clay. Almost 90% of the tunnel traverses formations that are quite similar in terms of excavation behavior. Exception to this are thrust zones and a calcareous stretch of the alignment. This last segment has a length of 200m and was identified since the very beginning as a tunneling challenge due to the combination of very poor geotechnical properties and an important water load."

Many of the trace elements found in coal are associated with mineral matter, making it possible to remove them by physical coal cleaning. As part of work funded by the Electric Power Research Institute, both conventional and advanced coal cleaning processes were found to provide large reductions in the concentration of many trace elements that, if released into the atmosphere, are considered to be potentially toxic or environmentally harmful. Advanced physical cleaning technologies appear to provide greater reductions than conventional technologies. Chemical cleaning processes may also remove many trace elements, possibly including organically-bound elements such as beryllium. Care must be taken in the disposal of coal cleaning plant refuse because oxidation and leaching of this material can create highly acidic leachate and many trace elements are mobile in an acid environment. Laboratory leaching procedures are potentially useful in determining the degree of risk of water contamination by trace elements should an acid environment form.

During the past five years the use of all-hydraulic drilling equipment has increased rapidly, and we have now reached a point where the hydraulic drill has become an alternative to be seriously considered for every drilling operation. The hydraulic drills have many advantages over pneumatic drills, but they also have certain characteristics, which makes a potential user hesitate before making the switch. And when the decision to use hydraulic drills has been made, the user then faces another choice of equal difficulty: the choice between different hydraulic systems. This paper discusses some of the factors to be taken into account when considering hydraulic drilling equipment for rapid tunneling in hard to medium hard rock. THE CHOICE BETWEEN HYDRAULIC AND PNEUMATIC EQUIPMENT The choice between a hydraulic and a pneumatic drill is much more than just that: It is a choice between two different systems. The choice is usually based on the productivity, economy or ergonomy of the system. However, also other factors should be considered, such as service capabilities and training requirements. And finally the choice will be influenced by the need to acquire know-how in the new technology. Researchers from the Spokane Research Laboratory, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, in cooperation with engineers from the Department of Mining and Geological Engineering, Montana Tech, Butte, MT, conducted tests to evaluate the tensile strength, fiber count, and adhesion of shotcrete applied to panels at the Chief Joseph Mine, a research and training facility operated by Montana Tech. The tests were conducted in the mine ramp 45 m (150 ft) inward from the access portal at a 15.25-m- (50-ft) long test area divided into five 3-m- (10-ft) long sections. The shotcrete was applied with an Aliva 240.5 machine fitted with a predampener. Different amounts of fiber were entrained for each panel. Background data for the tests were obtained from earlier tests in Nevada, where the typical amount of fiber in the shotcrete is 6.54 kg/m3 (11 lb/yd3). All shotcrete was applied to a minimum thickness of 76 mm (3 in). Cylindrical cores were drilled at the wall-rock interface, and adhesion was tested after 28 days of curing. The goal of this research is to reduce the need to install multiple supports at the advancing face by creating a safer mining system that limits the time miners are exposed to unprotected roof.

Reconstruction of historical exposures to silica dust is required in an ongoing cohort mortality study of workers in the diatomaceous earth (DE) industry. However, historical data were collected using three different sampling methods. This study was conducted to derive empirical quantitative relationships from linear regression equations between the three methods: standard impinger, total mass, and respirable mass. Dust from one diatomaceous earth processing plant was sampled simultaneously by all three methods. Results from 61 clusters of the three sampling devices indicate that the phcle size distribution of the dust varies with the two parent products sampled. baghouse product and main product. The relationships between particle counts and respirable mass are: Respirable mass (mg/m3) = 0.064 (mppd) impinger count for baghouse product dust, and respirable mass (mg/m3) = 0.018 (mppcf) impinger count for main product dust. The relationships between particle counts and total mass are: Total mass (mg/m3) = 0.837 (mppcf) impinger count for baghouse product, and total mass (mg/m3) = 1.21 (mppcf) for main product dust. In all four euuations, the intercept did not differ significantly from zero, and the correlation coefficients ranged from 0.90 to 0.95. Results are compared with data from four previously published studies.

The xanthate adsorption mechanism on pyrite was investigated with an emphasis on solubility studies. Additionally, adsorption studies, Eh and infrared spectrophotometer measurements were performed. Pyrite floats at pH levels between 3 and 6 using ethyl and amyl xanthates with a maximum at pH 4. The solubility of pyrite in the absence and presence of xanthate was investigated in detail with respect to pH and conditioning time. Experimental results showed that the solubility of pyrite increases from 60 to 120 ppm (10-3 to 2x10-3 mol/ L) in the presence of xanthate at pH 3. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra of ferric xanthate, dixanthogen and pyrite conditioned with xanthate indicated that dixanthogen is the only species that can be determined on the pyrite surface. Adsorption tests showed that the highest level of xanthate adsorption was in the acidic range; yet higher adsorption densities were detected in neutral solutions compared to alkaline conditions. Electrochemical data suggest that the doubling of the iron concentration is due to the reduction of ferric ion to ferrous by xanthate while xanthate is oxidized to dixanthogen. Dixanthogen formation together with the hydrophobic iron hydroxy-xanthate complex on the surface is proposed to be responsible for pyrite flotation. Shallow underground voids resulting from early coal mining and other resource recovery activities over the past several decades are now being recognized as a significant cause of ground subsidence problems. Uncertain knowledge of abandoned coal mines also imposes potential hazards in current mining operations since water inundation or the release of methane gas is a serious hazard when mine excavation operations break into an abandoned mine. Requirements for detecting and mapping subversive man-made tunnels in previous work has led to the development of a surface- operated automatic earth resistivity survey system and associated computer data processing system for military applications. Field demonstration tests of this system have resulted in successful detection of tunnels at depth-to- diameter ratios greater than ten to one. Under the sponsorship of the Bureau of Mines, a similar high-resolution earth resistivity system was designed and constructed for use as a potential means of detecting coal mine workings. The hardware and software aspects of the new system are described together with applications of the method to the survey and mapping of abandoned coal mine workings. Field tests are presented showing the detection of both air-filled and water-filled mine workings.

Both water pollution and proposed solid waste disposal regulations have a definite effect on the copper leaching industry and some of the major factors affecting the industry are discussed in this paper. New developments of the NDPS are discussed with emphasis on the "toxic" or priority pollutants and EPA's philosophy on the control of these pollutants, The protection of groundwater is the prime aim of RCRA through solid/hazardous waste management. Some of the major elements of the RCA regulations that will affect the copper leaching industry are discussed.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has investigated new methods for increasing the selectivity in flotation by creating and regulating reagent concentration gradients within flotation columns at steady-state operation. Gradients were generated and traced in a water-only system with the use of fluorescent dyes, and the effects of various operating parameters on these gradients were investigated. From this investigation, it was found that both gradual and steep gradients could be generated in the froth cleaning zone, and that these gradients could be changed through the manipulation of both physical and chemical operating parameters. The application of reagent-gradient control to mineral systems could improve both flotation grade and recovery in commercial flotation operations without the use of additional flotation circuitry.

Gold-silver and copper-gold deposits with high-temperature wallrock alteration of Ca-Mg-Fe-Al silicates occur in ca. 3.0 Ga old greenstone belts of the Yilgarn Block, Western Australia. The deposits are hosted by amphibolite-facies komatiites, basalts and BIF, controlled by ductile shear zones and located within the contact-metamorphic aureoles of composite granodiorite-granite batholiths. Disseminated sulfides and free gold form foliation-parallel ore zones in a gangue of anhydrous silicates (garnet, clinopyroxene, olivine), hydrous silicates (amphibole, biotite) and calcite. The deposits may be classified on the basis of their dominant economic metals as: 1(1) Gold skarns with substantial silver as by-product, represented by the Marvel Loch mine (production: 2,200,000 t at 3.5 g/t Au), and characterized by the mineral association pyrrhotite, loellingite, arsenopyrite, galena, gold and magnetite. (2) Gold skarns with low silver contents, represented by the Nevoria mine (production:1,850,000 t at 3.4 g/t Au), and characterized by the mineral association pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, gold, Bi-tellurides and magnetite. (3) Copper-gold skarns, represented by the Elverdton mine (production: 850,000 t at .7 5 Cu, 0.81 g/t Au), and characterized by the mineral association magnetite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, gold and Ag-Bi tellurides.

It can be useful to model the mean grade values for a metal in mineral deposits containing that metal as representing the extreme value tail of a lognormal frequency distribution for the concentration values of the metal in rocks of all types. Results for copper and zinc in the Abitibi area of the Canadian Shield are compared to results previously obtained for the Canadian Appalachian Region. The lognormal model is also applied to a set of 162 large gold deposits in the Abitibi area. In the second part of the paper, 1311 large and small gold deposits in the Abitibi area are modelled as discrete events. By means of a newly developed spatial clustering model it is possible to predict the variances of random variables for frequencies of deposits in cells of different sizes.

The Gosowong epithermal quartz-adularia vein, in the Halmahera magmatic arc, is a new discovery in an area of primary tropical rain forest with no history of gold mining or mineralization. The newly recognized mineral district also contains a number of other epithermal vein systems, two centres of porphyry Cu-Au mineralization, and a number of argillic and advanced argillic alteration zones that may be related to underlying mineralization. Gosowong was discovered and tested through the application of basic exploration techniques including drainage sampling, soil sampling, trenching, magnetics, IP, and diamond drilling. Lapse time from the initial reconnaissance discovery of a stream sediment anomaly to the release of inferred resource estimates of approximately 1.0m ounces was just over 3 years.

This paper presents the results of a parametric study of the influence of natural features (stress field, rock strength, and strength and orientation of fractures) as well as the influence of induced features (undercut span, boundary slot, and other boundary-weakening measures) on the cavability of an undercut block of ore in mining by the block-caving method. The two-dimensional finite element analysis technique was used for this study. A coarse "mesh," along with linear homogeneous assumptions for rock properties, was used to model the problem of initiation of caving in a block of ore. Interpretation of the test results suggests that weakening the "abutments" of the block as well as certain orientations of natural fractures exercise significant influence on cavability. These findings hold promise for immediate application to known situations in block-caving mines.

Many longwall operators experience difficulty complying with the federal regulation limiting average dust exposure. Others are currently in compliance, but the dust exposure limit keeps then from increasing their production. Spray water is a major means of dust control. Excess water can cause problems in the transportation system and the cleaning plant, and reduces the Btu value of the run of mine coal. Thus, the dust exposure reduction per unit of water sprayed must be maximized. This paper discusses underground tests recently completed as part of a Bureau of Mines research program to determine the effects of variations in spray water flow rate, pressure, proportioning and spray orientation on longwall shearers.

GeoBiotics has developed a biooxidation technology (patents pending) which involves coating refractory precious metal sulfide concentrates onto a support material and biooxidizing the sulfides in a heap configuration. The concentrates are produced from low or high grade sulfidic refractory ores or existing mine tailings. The process has been found to achieve high gold recoveries asso­ciated with stirred tank biooxidation, but at the low operating and capital costs associated with whole ore heap biooxidation. Improved gold recoveries of up to 98% after biooxidation are reported for 4 representative mines or deposits. The sulfide flotation concentrates were studied using 3 and 6 in. diameter columns or 3 in. drained vats. The refractory sulfide concen­trates biooxidize rapidly in 3 to 12 weeks with substantial increases in subsequent gold recovery.

This project had all things happen to it. Born easy, a hard time after being born, there were tremendous problems to overcome but here it is, a major copper project, a major operation, and a new source of copper for Mexico and the world market. La caridad is an ore body located in the state of Sonora in northwestern Mexico. It is at an elevation of 1,200 meters above sea level and the nearest major city is Hermosillo, the capital city of Sonora. Hermosillo is located approximately 270 kms (about 168 miles) to the southwest of la caridad. North of la caridad, 130 kms (about 81 miles), is the U.S. border town of Douglas, Arizona, which has a sister city on the Mexican side of the border -Agua Prieta.

Reclamation of potentially acid producing coal processing waste requires a 4-foot cover, and/or treatment to allow vegetation establishment. If not planned properly, soil covering alone does not prevent refuse acidification or formation of acid seeps. Adequate neutralization enhancement prior to soil covering can maintain an alkaline environment in the soil refuse interface and prevent acidification. Direct vegetation establishment using only limestone amendment (without soil cover) can successfully reclaim aged and weathered fine (Blurry) and coarse (gob) refuse if adequate neutralization treatment is provided for the oxidized surface zone. Acid seeps, representing an "after-the-fact" verification of an imbalance of acid-base equilibrium may also be corrected using upslope alkaline recharge techniques. Concentrated alkaline recharge pools have been constructed above previously soil covered acid gob at the Peabody Will Scarlet Mine to abate acid seeps. Preliminary monitoring results (1989-1992) from a concentrated alkaline recharge pool demonstration project in the Pit 4 area of the Will Scarlet Mine have documented a 50 to 80 percent reduction in acidity in the principal recharge pool groundwater zone. A 22% reduction in acidity has occurred in the primary seeps located downslope from the alkaline recharge pools. The initial improvements in water quality are seen as a positive indication that groundwater acidity will decrease further and amelioration of the acid seep will continue.

"The adsorption of collector on chalcocite has been studied in situ in aqueous solutions by applying an atomic force microscopy (AFM). The AFM images show that xanthate, such as potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) and potassium amyl xanthate (PAX), adsorbs strongly on chalcocite mainly in the form of insoluble metal xanthate, which binds strongly with the mineral surface without being removed by flushing with ethanol alcohol. The result clearly shows that the adsorption of xanthate on chalcocite is totally different from its adsorption on chalcopyrite, during which oily dixanthogen is the main adsorption product on chalcopyrite surface. AFM images also showed that increasing solution pH to 10 doesn’t prevent the adsorption of xanthate on chalcocite much and the result confirms with the fact that chalcocite floats well in a wide pH range up to 12 with xanthate being used as a collector. INTRODUCTION In flotation, the adsorption of collector on mineral surface is vital for a successful flotation process to achieve a satisfying metal recovery. Historically, many works have been carried out to clarify the adsorption mechanism of collectors on sulfides. (Gaudin and Schuhmann, 1936, Poling and Leja, 1963; Allison et al., 1972, Fuerstenau, 1982; Leja, 1982; Woods, 1984) The adsorption of xanthate on chalcocite surface in aqueous solution also attracted the interest of many researches. Gaudin and his colleagues (Gaudin et al., 1934; Gaudin and Schuhmann, 1936) studied the solubility of potassium ethyl xanthate and its reaction products in organic solvents and firstly proposed there was initially chemisorbed xanthate (X-) on chalcocite surface followed by insoluble cuprous xanthate (CuX). Allison et al. (1972) studied the reaction products of various sulfide minerals with xanthate solutions and reported that the measured rest potential of chalcocite in 6.25×10-4 M KEX solution at pH 7 was +60 mV and the reaction product of PAX on chalcocite was cuprous xanthate. Mielczarski and Suoninen (1984a, 1984b) applied the XPS and studied the adsorption of potassium ethyl xanthate on cuprous sulfide. It was reported that there was a relatively rapid formation of a well-oriented monolayer of xanthate ions followed by a slow growth of disordered cuprous xanthate molecules on top of this layer. Richardson et al. (1984) carried out an electrochemical study of chalcocite flotation with the addition of ethyl xanthate. It was proposed that cuprous xanthate and possibly cupric xanthate were adsorbed hydrophobic species on chalcocite surface due to the exchange and charge transfer oxidation reactions. Leppinen et al. (1989) applied an in-situ FTIR study of ethyl xanthate adsorption on sulfide minerals under conditions of controlled potential and they concluded that, for chalcocite, there were three different potential regions of xanthate adsorption, including chemisorption, copper ethyl xanthate formation on the surface and multilayer formation."
