The objective of this paper is to back analyze the August 6th, 2007, collapse at the Crandall Canyon Mine in Utah, in order to better understand the geometric and geomechanical factors that contributed to that collapse. In this work, the LaModel boundary-element program, along with the best available information, is used for the back analysis. To initiate the analysis, a six-step base model of the mining in the Main West area was developed. This base model included a step for each of the critical stages in the mining of this area. Next, calibrated values for the critical input parameters, rock mass stiffness, gob stiffness and coal strength, were developed and optimized based on the best available information. Finally, the model was used to simulate the final mining scenario. As a result of this back analysis, a number of conclusions can be made concerning the mine design and the August 6th collapse: 1) overall, the area was primed for a massive pillar collapse because of the large area of equal-size pillars, 2) the abutment stress from the active retreat sections and the adjacent longwall panels were significant contributors to the collapse and 3) from the modeling alone, it is not clear exactly what triggered the August collapse, although the active mining is a reasonable assumption.

The Red Dog Operation is located in northwestern Alaska at Latitude 68°, 100 miles north of the Arctic Circle and 50 miles inland from the Chukchi Sea. The orebody was acquired by the NANA Regional Corporation, (an Alaska Native Corporation established by the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971), in 1980 in their land selection. In 1982 Cominco American and the NANA Corporation signed a development agreement and Cominco Alaska Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Cominco American, was formed to manage the Red Dog Project. An extensive exploration program in 1980 -1982 outlined a mineral inventory of 85 million tons, at a grade of 5.2% Pb, 17.1 % Zn, and 2.4 oz/ton Ag, which makes the Red Dog the second largest deposit ever discovered. Broken Hill, in Australia, is the only zinc orebody which was originally larger than Red Dog. The design of the facilities is to process 2.1 million tons of ore annually, which will produce 560,000 tons of zinc concentrate, 100,000 tons of lead concentrate and 50,000 tons of bulk lead/zinc concentrate.

Red bauxites from Breadnut Valley, Clarendon Parish, Jamaica, are very homogeneous in texture. Bauxite minerals are uniformly distributed in a groundmass, the predominant grain size being smaller than l um (Figure 1 Although the deposits have a massive, non-stratified structure, they all seem to have been affected by postformational faulting which is evidenced by shear zones running subvertically through the deposits. These shear zones stand out very clearly because of a yellow staining along their faces. Often yellow zones, ranging from a few m to several cm in thickness, have developed. When the shear zones are cut at an angle, they appear as yellow veins. Near the surface of the deposits, yellow material forms shallow irregular lenses (Figure 2). In most cases, tree roots (hair roots), or their imprints, are associated with the shear zones or stained areas. In fact, the yellowish color is especially pronounced along these roots and often disappears where the roots end (Figure 3). The mineral composition and texture of red groundmass and yellow zones are markedly different. Secondary phosphate minerals and a higher goethite to hematite ratio characterize the mineral composition of the yellow zones. It should also be noted that Al-substitution in goethite from these areas is significantly higher than in goethite occurring in the groundmass (Figure 4).

This paper deals primarily with roof bolting in Kentucky coal mines from January 1, 1949, through December 31, 1954, a six year period. The Consolidation Coal Co? (Ky.), a division of the Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Co., began systemmatic roof bolting in November 1948 in Mine #204, Elkhorn #3 Seam, at Jenkins, Kentucky, After the efficiency of roof bolting had been proven by the Consolidation Coal Co., this procedure was adopted by other companies throughout the state. In December 1954, approximately 46.4 percent of Kentucky's total production of coal from underground mines was obtained from roof-bolted areas. Statistics in this report will show the progress made in roof bolting during the six years, in addition to the roof bolting being done as of December 31, 1955. Significant progress has been made in the coal mines of Kentucky in reducing the roof-fall fatality, rates, during the past several years by adopting systemmatic roof bolting. The ground work by the Consolidation Coal Co, (Ky.) in cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Mines was based upon the previous experience of the St. Joseph Lead. Cc, in its Southeastern Missouri Mines and The Tennessee Coal and Iron Division of the United States Steel Corporation. ABSTRACT OF ORAL PRESENTATION A discussion of current U. S. Bureau of Mines research into the problem of strata control in multiple Western coal seams will be presented. The problem and research priorities will be described as determined from interviews with major Colorado and Utah mine operators as well as governmental agencies responsible for Federal leases. Proposed contract research and ongoing in-house studies will be discussed, including case histories and results from projects being conducted at two multiple seam operations in Utah.

Simulation of the multi-entry and multi-crosscut (MEMC) ventilation systems commonly employed in U .S. underground coal mines can be very tedious, due to the large number of crosscuts with stoppings to be represented in the network models. In order to reduce the amount of work needed to build the models, a common practice is to represent a number of crosscuts with one equivalent airway. However, this introduces certain errors into the simulation results. In this paper, algorithms have been proposed to simplify the ventilation networks of common MEMC systems encountered in panel development operations. The algorithms can be used to reduce a MEMC system into one airway with an equivalent resistance and to determine the airflow distributions in the system and the leakages through the stoppings.

Bleeder entries are critically important to longwall mining for the moving of supplies and miners as well as the dilution of mine air contaminants and must stay open for many years. In this study, standing supports in moderate cover bleeder entries were observed, numerically modeled and instrumented by researchers at the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The measurements of the installed borehole pressure cells (BPCs), standing support load cells and convergence meters, and roof extensometers are presented in addition to the numerical modeling results and visual observations made by the NIOSH researchers in the bleeder entries. The results include the effects of multiple panels being extracted in close proximity to the instrumented site as well as over one and a half years of aging. As expected, standing supports closer to the longwall gob showed the greatest load and convergence. The roof sag appeared generally independent of the proximity to the longwall gob. The BPC readings were driven by both the proximity to the gob and the depth into the pillar. The results of this study demonstrated that the entry roof can respond independently of the pillar and standing support loading. In addition, the rear abutment stress experienced by this bleeder entry design was minimal. The closer the mine development, pillar or supports are to the gob, the greater the applied load due to rear abutment stress.

A detailed experimental study of the variations in grinding rate with particle size, particle load, ball diameter, ball load, mill diameter, and mill speed was carried out for a soft cement clinker and a hard cement clinker. The effects of the ball diameter, ball load, and particle load were observed to be material (hardness) independent, and those of the particle size, mill diameter, and mill speed to be material dependent. A sharp change in grinding behavior was observed for both the clinkers at about 150 µm size. Below this critical size: (1) the hardness difference between the two clinkers became insignificant, (2) variation in the grinding rate with particle size became markedly more pronounced, and (3) mill speed had little or no effect on grinding rate. The importance of these results in the context of process optimization and control is discussed.

Are the results of an exploration program worth the cost? This is a question I suspect many of you are familiar with and, theoretically at least, it is an easy question to answer. The answer, of course, lies in comparing the future earnings stream the program is expected to generate, to the present value of the cost of carrying it out. While historical costs can be determined without much difficulty, estimating the value of a future earnings stream involves all sorts of assumptions regarding future costs, metal prices, inflation rates and an appropriate discount factor; and in the context in which the question arises, requires additional assumptions about mineral deposits which have yet to be discovered. As a practical matter, this kind of approach isn't likely to produce a very convincing answer; certainly not one convincing enough to satisfy a skeptical audience; nor one likely to temper the illusions of recent converts to mineral exploration, who are convinced that if enough money is spent, profitable discoveries will inevitably follow. Within broad limits, however, I believe it is possible to analyze the costs and results of gold exploration in the U.S.A. over the past 20 odd years in a useful manner. And while such an analysis is imperfect, it will provide some insight into this fascinating subject.

INTRODUCTION The flotation process, in the real industrial complexes, is characterized by the existence of the significant number of the close reciprocal interrelationship between the input and output Darameters. Traditional complexity is appeared with regard to absence of the suitable a priori information for the physico-chemical characteristics of the flotation process. It’s led to needful of taking of consideration about the undefinition which have got the place in the real conditions and application of the statistical methods. The identification of the flotation process through statistical methods is conception of the more-stages procedure, including the collection and previous analysis, the choice of the model structure and valuation method, the estimation of the model un- known parameters and the results interpretation. The essential concept for the subject of this paper belongs to the empirical models ("black-box") and deals with optimizing in constant industrial plant process. The offered method envisages the application of process operation data in order to improve the work process or constant accomplishment of better results for the target function in relation to the former achievement. The optimum process solution isn't afixed value under the influence of various factors, but "a moving point" along the response surface and deviates from the scheme solutions. The evolutive planning method constantly "investigates and approaches" the optimum solution for the selected target function. As a matter of fact the expert operates the plant without interrupting the normal work process. The essential concept of method is to attain changes in the standard conditions, but so limited that they will not effect either production or the product. This method is based on statistical concepts and availability of following the risk of error. The possible influental factors for the flotation process (m=l, 2, 3) is following: the metal content in the feed ore; production level (t/h); grinding fineness in the flotation pulp; pH-values; the consumption of collectors and modifiers The possible target functions are: the recovery of plant capacity, metal recovery in the concentration process and concentration quality. The application of the evolutive operativity method in the chalcopyrite flotation- Bucim concentrator, combines the statistical data and the operator's experience in the interpretation and making a decision which adds up to the precise automatic performance of the process. The advantages of this method in relation to the existing procedure for the flotation process are the following: • The method is unexpensive and losses are reduced to the time necessary to collect the data and record them in the computer. This method provides a constant process control and a quality decision which is better than those brought by an ex- pert with great experience ("hit-and-miss method"). • The method also provides incidental data about the effects. • The method should not be considered as a procedure for solving an incidental problem ("crash program"). • The obtained results must be interpreted by an appropriate expert in order to be considered instructive. MATHEMATICAL STATISTICS Taking into consideration the complexity of the enrichment processes it's necessary the application of "black-box" and mathematical modelling. The presence of the indefinite elements compel us towards the both theory of the probability and mathematical statistics. The mathematical statistics by the mineral processing investigation of the valuable raw materials in the last years has had greater signifance and widely spread application. The application of the mathematical statistics methods for the technological pro- cess analysis and the construction of the mathematical models is bound up by the task putting of the automatic control system de- sign (Fisher R. A. 1941, 1949). The statistical analysis in the enrichment processes is applied formerly, especially in the sampling estimation. Contemporary, in the last years is imposed the tendency of mathematical statistics application for the obtaining of quantity characteristics and quantity valuation from the individual influental factors. Above mentioned tendency in the significant level is based by the mathematical statistics development as a mathematical discipline close connected with the technical cybernetics general joining to the investigated object as a "black-box". Another essential factor in the mathematical statistics development is appeared the created mathematical theory of experiments as a new, to some extent, autonomous statistical domain. The theory of experiments has demonstrated exclusively importance for the investigation of the complex more-factorial processes in the chemistry, mineral processing, metallurgy etc. The investigation by the enrichment processes of the valuable raw materials and their management is possible by the statistical method application. In the same time, it's possible to use the wide-spread traditional methods of the statistical analysis, such as the methods of the dispersion, correlation, regression etc. Also, it may be mentioned above all the methods of the statistical planning of the extreme experiments. The more perspective are representatived some cybernetic methods which are based by the probability as an approach in the process analysis, for example, the identify of the ways and forms, the graph application as an additional instrument in the correlation analysis, the dynamic programming etc. The mathematical statistics application in the laboratory investigation scale is connected above all by the experimented material analysis and the compact representation of the obtained results. The mathematical statistics methods are more varrying and may be applied in the investigations of the wide circle of problems

In the grand scheme of things, the 9.5-t (21,000-lb) shipment of molybdenum concentrate that left Freeport-McMoRan?s Climax Mine site on May 10, 2012 was not unlike the thousands of others that have been hauled away from the site during the last century, except for the fact that this shipment marked the official rebirth of one of America?s greatest mines. For nearly two decades, 17 years to be exact, there was no production from the mine that was once the largest underground mine in the world and was so important to the Allies? effort during World War II that it was assigned the highest priority of any mine in the United States by the War Production Board. The economic recession in 1980 put an end to the mine?s success, and the Great Recession of 2008 nearly derailed the mine again. But, like the nearby town of Leadville, CO, the mine survived thanks to an investment of more than $700 million by Climax Molybdenum Co., a Freeport-McMoRan company, to bring the Climax Mine back into production.

A detailed study of ponding phenomenon relative to surface subsidence due to longwall mining was conducted for various surface stream conditions. Based on field monitoring, the stream-ponding process and three forms of stream water are described. Also discussed are the criteria of stream ponding and the influences on the ponding process by two key factors: the angle of stream flow and the change in the stream-bed gradient. A numerical (mathematical) model, which combines trend surface technique that describe the topographical features in the vicinity of a stream and the modified influence function, which represents the profile of the surface subsidence trough (or basin), is constructed to predict the formation characteristics of stream ponding in terms of location, boundary and accumulated water volume of migratory and stationary ponds produced by the stream-ponding process. Three cases are analyzed using the model to predict the interaction of the underground operations and the environmental impact due to stream ponding. The feasibility of various mitigative measures are assessed.

The Front Range Infrastructure Resources Project (FRIRP) of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is currently using Landsat Thematic Mapper? and air- borne-visible-infrared-imaging-spectrometer (AVIRIS) data along with planned thermal-infrared data and interferometry-synthetic-aperture radar (IFSAR) data to assess the industrial-minerals quality and quantity along the Colorado-Wyoming Front Range Urban Corridor and to characterize surrounding areas. Landsat? satellite data show synoptic views of the corridor, which may readily be used to identify potential regions of permissible terrain, such as river drain-ages, pediment surfaces, upturned lithology, and bed- rock exposures, where various types of deposits may occur. Descriptive models of these deposit types are used to define the physical features that need to be recognized and characterized. In the case of Landsat? data, the measured light is either reflected or partly absorbed by surface materials, depending on the wave- length of the light, which allows coarse mineral classifications to be made.

"The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), commonly known as Superfund, mandates evaluation of remediation alternative using nine criteria: (1) overall protection of human health and the environment, (2) compliance with ARARs (applicable or relevant and appropriate standards), (3) long-term effectiveness and permanence, (4) reduction of toxicity, mobility or volume, (5) short-term effectiveness, (6) implementability, (7) cost, (8) state acceptance, and (9) community acceptance. Many states have adopted these or similar criteria for remedy selection under state laws. Although not explicitly addressed in the CERCLA criteria, consideration of sustainability can be incorporated into these criteria. This paper explores how sustainability can be evaluated for remedy selection using the CERCLA criteria. INTRODUCTION Sustainability considerations can be incorporated into all phases of site remediation: • Site investigation (remedial investigation). • Remedy selection. • Remedial design. • Remediation construction. • Operations, maintenance, and monitoring. This paper focuses on remedy selection. Many have looked at remedy selection using sustainability criteria. However, CERCLA and corresponding State programs require remedy selection using mandatory criteria. This paper shows how sustainability can be explicitly considered using the mandatory criteria. REVIEW OF CERCLA CRITERIA First, we review the definitions of the CERCLA criteria. We then explore how sustainability criteria can be fit into the CERCLA criteria. Overall Protection of Human Health and the Environment This criterion addresses the degree to which each alternative is protective of human health and the environment, considering both long-term and short-term risks. Overall protectiveness is a ""threshold"" criterion, in that alternatives that do not achieve adequate protection of human health or the environment are eliminated from further consideration. Evaluation of this criterion is derived from the evaluation of the other criteria (e.g., long-term effectiveness and permanence, and short-term effectiveness). It is not an independent criterion, but more a summary of the overall evaluation."

The increasing volume of wastes being generated by industry is a legacy of the industrial revolution and subsequent industrial growth. Social and regulatory pressures have been mounting on industry to improve its waste management practices. In many industrial sectors, waste disposal has been the only method of waste management. Land farming, underground burial, deep wells and incineration are still practiced. Often, concentration and volume reduction of waste streams are also practiced to reduce the waste management costs. In the recent years, there has been emphasis on waste minimization. Since the 19th century, industry has practiced recycling of usable resources as a way of handling unwanted byproducts. The mining industry has recovered or extracted economic minerals from tailings for decades. For example, during the gold rush period of 1970s, extraction of gold from tailings dams became economically attractive. Similarly, when it was economical, coal and shale fractions have also been recovered from tailings and refuge materials for commercial uses. In the steel industry, with the development of new furnace technology, recycling of flue dust and scrap iron was practiced as early as in the 19th century. Before 1900, there was little incentive for the industry to reduce the waste volumes. Manufacturers, however, did see a rationale for adopting profit-increasing techniques. They made an effort to recover and recycle economic materials from waste sources. One of the pioneering examples of resource recovery is the coke making industry. As the industry was market driven, products recycled from coke batteries included ammonia for use in fertilizers, gas for power generation and heating, and tar for road construction, wood preservation and roofing. Tar had been avery troublesome waste byproduct. But it quickly became a valuable chemical raw material, providing the foundation for Germany's dominance of the world's dye and medicine markets before World War I. Similar trends evolved in the chemical industry. In the context of current environmental regulations and escalating mining and processing costs, recycling of re- [ ] sources is becoming economically more attractive. Solid and liquid wastes generated by industries contain a range of inorganic and organic contaminants. Among these contaminants, metals and hydrocarbons form major groups. Treatment of these wastes is essential to meet regulatory disposal requirements. In the recent years, based on the principles of chemical and mineral process engineering, processes have been developed to treat these industrial wastes. This article reviews some of the processes that have made impacts and have proven to be effective at commercial scales.

The Hansen orebody is a large (1 2 million kg U3O8, 0.08% U3O8 average grade) sandstone-type uranium deposit in the Eocene Echo Park Formation of central Colorado. The deposit occurs in carbonaceous braided-stream sandstones that are part of a wet-alluvial-fan complex that prograded eastward across a narrow strike-slip basin. The Echo Park basin is one of a series of basins that formed along the east side of the Colorado Plateau as it was translated northward during the Eocene culmination of the Laramide orogeny. The valleys of east- and southeast- flowing perennial streams, whose courses were transected by the subsiding Echo Park basin, were filled with permeable volcanic and sedimentary rocks during construction of the Oligocene Thirtynine Mile volcanic field. These paleovalleys funneled large volumes of uranium-bearing ground waters through the braided-stream facies of the wet alluvial fan. Uplift of a basement horst downfan from the Hansen orebody reduced transmissivity and helped maintain a reducing environment in the Hansen area; this later became an important factor in preservation of the Hansen orebody. The horst also deflected uranium- bearing ground waters upward into the Oligocene Tallahassee Creek Conglomerate where they formed the Picnic Tree orebody (1.1 million kg U3O8, 0.09% U3O8 average grade) in an altered ash-fall tuff that is essentially barren above the Hansen orebody. Several potential source rocks for uranium are present and range in age from Proterozoic quartz monzonites of Silver Plume age to lower and upper Oligocene ash-flow and ash-fall tuffs. Uranium may have been contributed to the Hansen orebody several times from different sources. Uranium and thorium analyses of ash-flow tuffs indicate that ample uranium was released during cooling and ground-water leaching to form several Hansen orebodies. The host sandstones are conspicuously altered, and their initial high permeability has been greatly reduced by precipitation of intergranular cements, especially clays and opal C-T. The alteration and cementation mineral assemblages and the chemical composition of stagnant ground waters recovered from pump tests indicate that uranium deposition occurred under alkaline, reducing conditions preceded and/or accompanied by bacterial production of framboidal pyrite.

Global public mineral reporting codes have driven strong governance of public disclosures of minerals information. Recently, we have seen an increase in disclosure of information related to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) issues, and governance of ESG information in mining companies has arguably reached a similar level of governance and diligence afforded mineral reporting. We define Resource Governance as the conjunction of environmental, social and minerals governance. A modern systems approach to Resource Governance, which combines mineral and ESG information, would provide not only reporting and governance capability, but also has the potential to sense/respond, predict, and manage ESG risks.

OUTLOOK FOR COAL UTILIZATION In 1975, about 650 million tons of bituminous coal and lignite mined in the United States was used to meet 55% of the primary energy input for electric power generation and 26% of the total industrial consumption.1 Even though this amounts to only 21% of the total energy requirements, it is believed that with the declining natural gas resources and uncertainty of liquid fuel imports, coal will assume a more dominant role in suppplying our future energy needs. A regional breakdown of the coal reserves of the United States along with their characteristics is shown in Table I. At present the United Stares Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) and the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) are financing extensive research programs in advanced mining methods and energy conversion processes. The increased demand for wal which may result from these research programs may also create large-scale environmental protection problems. As more and more coal is mined the production of undesirable coal fines and dust also increases proportionally. The USBM and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) research in this field includes development in the areas of instrumentation for qualitative and quantitative analysis of wal dust, protective devices, and dust collectors. Dust control by water sprays, steam, and foam are also being investigated. Other aspects of safety in mining include developing methane drainage techniques prior to coal mining, fire and explosion prevention, and neutralization and disposal of acid mine waters. It is the belief of coal technologists that when the emphasis shifts to coal as the primary source of energy. the existing methods of mining and preparation of coal must be improved considerably to supply large quantities of quality coal for energy conversion. It is the objective of the present large-scale research financed by ERDA to produce substitute fuels from coal. Large-scale gasification pilot plants are being constructed by Bituminous Coal Research, Consolidation Coal Co., Institute of Gas Technology, and the Pittsburgh Energy Research Center to produce coal gas of natural gas standards at 1,000 psig. The processes being adopted by these pilot plants are oriented towards recovering most of the sulfur from coal by absorbing H2S and its subsequent conversion to elemental sulfur. The environmental protection standards will be strictly followed in using the results of these pilot plants to construct large-scale coal gasification plants in the latter part of the 1970's. With the increasing awareness of the need for air pollution control, considerable research is being done to minimize sulfur dioxide emission from thermal power plants. Utilization of limestone and dolomite scrubbing systems and caustic treatment of stack gases have proved to reduce sulfur and nitric oxide emissions by about 90 to 96%.3 Currently, about 22 scrubbers are in use in the United States to reduce sulfur in stack gas emission. In the long-term, it appears that optimal combinations will be developed involving both advanced coal preparation technology and wet scrubbing. The sulfur compounds are converted either to elemental sulfur of sulfuric acid. Besides the sulfur compounds, the major byproduct of the coal utilization industry is the large amount of coal ash. The Coal Research Bureau at West Virginia University has developed a practical use for coal ash as a structural material. The coal industry will undergo revolutionary changes when coal becomes the primary source of energy. New coal mining and preparation processes will be introduced to meet the ever-increasing per capita energy requirements. 2. BENEFICATION Introduction Coal preparation, like the beneficiation of ores, is also aimed at the separation of values from associated waste. Even though the unit operations involved when enriching ores and coal are similar, there are certain characteristics unique to coal preparation. Unlike the scattered and concentrated veins of underground minera1 ores, coal is distributed uniformly and very much in abundance in the coal mines. Coal occurs as the metamorphosed sedimentary deposits of vegetable matter, while metal and mineral deposits occur in great varieties of forms, structures, and origin-from igneous to sedimentary and metamorphic. The mined coal, being much more friable than mineral ores, is subjected to less intensive size reduction operations. Ores are usually ground to a very fine size for subsequent concentration, while coal is crushed to a coarser size, since considerably less liberation is needed to achieve the desired degree of separation. Since mineral matter is to a great extent discretely distributed in coal, concentration is mainly achieved by taking advantage of differences in specific gravity between clean coal and associated waste. In general, about 90% of coal is concentrated using specific gravity separation and about 10% by froth flotation. In contrast, these operations are frequently reversed in the beneficiation of ores. In coal preparation almost all fractions separated during various stages are made use of. while large amounts of gangue material are rejected in the concentration of ores. Hence, coal generally has a much lower ratio of concentration than ores. Since ore deposits are frequently more variable and mineralogically complex than coal, beneficiation of ore may require more plant flexibility and point-to-point quality control. This characteristic difference between the mineral ores and coal is attributed to the generally used one-step processing in coal as compared to the multiple-step processing of ores. Dewatering to enhance the energy content of coal is usually considered a major unit operation. Even though thickening and filtration are common for dewatering ore concentrates and cleaned coal, vibrating centrifuges and disk filters find unique application in the coal industry for achieving these types of solid-fluid separation. In coal preparation, thermal drying is carried out in separate units at the mine. While ore concentrates are usually dried at the smelter. Although the drying of ores is seldom considered dangerous, volatile matter and combustible dust are reasons why the thermal drying of coal can be hazardous. Open air storage of ores and mined coal results in partial oxidation. Unlike the oxidation of ores, the oxidation of the pyritic and carbonaceous constituents of coal together with the heat of condensation of moisture contribute to spontaneous heating and the subsequent combustion of coal in storage. Among the other significant difference between concentration of ores and coal are the weight and capacity of processing equipment. Coal processing employs less cumbersome, higher capacity units while the beneficiation of ores usually requires much more massive and frequently lower capacity equipment. Properties of Coal Which Influence Design The widely varying and heterogeneous composition of coal, due to metamorphism, determines the preparation design and uses of the resulting products. The 32nd annual American Hall of Fame Awards Banquet and Fundraiser, sponsored by the Mining Foundation of the Southwest (MFSW), will be held at the JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort & Spa on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2014. Each year, one living Hall of Fame inductee, up to three Medal of Merit recipients, honorees from mining?s past, and recipients of an Industry Partnership Award and a Special Citation are recognized for their respective contributions to the mining industry. Armine Frederick Ban?eld Jr., past chairman and founder of Mintec, Inc. located in Tucson, AZ, will be honored as the 2014 Hall of Fame Inductee at the awards banquet. Banfield founded Mintec from his Tucson apartment in 1970 and expanded it to a global operation. Under his guidance, Mintec won the 2013 President?s E-Award for Exports ? the highest recognition any United States company may receive for making a significant contribution to the expansion of U.S. exports. Medals of Merit will be awarded to Corale L. and James A. Brierley, founder and principal of Brierley Consultancy LLC; David Nicholas of Call and Nicholas Inc. and Scott M. Shields of Joy Global. The Brierleys are being recognized for their true scientific partnership with parallel achievements in academia and in business development. Nicholas is being recognized as the co-founder of Call & Nicholas and for his noted expertise in mining geotechnical engineering. Connor, ?Father of Utah Mining,? for pioneering mineral exploration efforts in Utah; Earl Tappan Stannard, president of Kennecott Copper Co., for transforming Kennecott in to one of the largest U.S. copper producers; Arthur Barrette Parsons, mining editor and author, for his book ?The Porphyry Coppers in 1933,? a seminal work detailing the history and technical information regarding major porphyry copper deposits and Ernest R. Dickie, general manager of Bagdad Copper Co., for his foresight in converting the mine from block caving to open pit. The Industry Partnership Award will be presented to Empire Southwest, a third generation family owned dealership for Caterpillar which consistently ranks among the top Caterpillar dealers worldwide. This paper describes the Darwin Silver Recovery project, located 66 km (40 miles) outside of Lone Pine, near Darwin, Inyo County, California. A lead-zinc mine and a flotation concentrator were operated there from 1945 to 1957. By the time the mine was shut down, 1.53 Tg (1.69 million short tons) of tailings had been stored in ponds. An average silver assay of 47 mg/kg (1.38 troy oz/st) of tailings stimulated interest for commercial silver recovery. A heap leach process was developed in 1981 at the Tucson Research Center of Anaconda Minerals Company, a division of Atlantic Richfield Company. Agglomeration techniques were used on the ore since the fine grind did not allow direct heap leaching. Lime and cement were required as binders, Early laboratory tests showed that recoveries equal to those from an agitated leach could be achieved at lower capital and operating costs. Laboratory tests determined cyanide requirements, lime and cement usages, and percolation or leach rates, as well as confirming that a zinc precipitation step could recover the silver from the leach solution.
