The paper uses three examples to illustrate the challenges that the minerals industry is facing with regard to our image and the public?s perception of us. The paper then discusses communication with stakeholders as opposed to lecturing to the public and the authorities, and states that the industry needs to work more directly towards politicians and regulators as target groups. The conclusion is that we still have a way to go before the industry is doing enough to bring our message to the right people, but we are improving.

Significant advances have occurred in the use of electrochemical techniques for sulfide mineral flotation research. The techniques have been used singly or jointly with other characterization methods. When used in combination with other methods, the electrochemical methods provide a means to control the state of oxidation of the surface. Various analytical methods are employed for characterization. The methods that have been used include wetting, x-ray photoelectron and fourier transform infrared spectroscopies. The electrochemical methods include voltammetry and transient electrochemical techniques of galvanostatic polarization and AC impedance spectroscopy. The challenge for the future lies in the utilization of this knowledge in plant operations so as to increase the overall efficiency of flotation separations.

At its lowest hierarchical level, the mine ventilation control system consists of local systems controlling the concentration of noxious gases in the air currents of various branches of the ventilation network, and of local systems controlling the air flow rates through those branches in which it is not necessary to regulate the concentration of any noxious gases. With respect to the noxious gas concentrations, the manipulated variables are air flow rates, while with respect to the air flow rates - the manipulated variables are aerodynamic resistances of the corresponding branches. Since there is an interdependence between the air flow rates in the ventilation network branches controlled through changes in aerodynamic resistance, the total system of mine ventilation control falls in the class of multivariable systems. The treatment of individual branches of a controlled ventilation network as separate plants presupposes an absolute autonomy of local systems, which is an untenable concept. The present paper is an attempt to break up the multivariable control system of the noxious gas concentrations and the air flow rates into autonomous (mutually unrelated) local control systems. The plant discussed is a ventilation network of arbitrary configuration with a single main axial fan. Because of the complexity of the problems involved, the multivariable control system of noxious gas concentrations and air flow rates has been described as linear, with constant and lumped parameters.

Taboca Mining is one of the largest producers of tin in the world. In its pilot plant, significant amounts of a middling of 90% xenotime (YPO4) and 10% zircon (ZrSi04) are produced. Until now, these minerals of this ore body could not be separated successfully. This paper presents some aspects of the fundamentals of xenotime and zircon flotation with anionic (fatty acids) and cationic (amine acetate) collector, as well as the influence of the superficial leaching of the minerals with cold HCI and HNO3 on the floatability. The mineralogical studies showed that both minerals are optically liberated in -212+106 µm size fraction. Surprisingly, SEM analysis indicated that both xenotime and zircon contain very small inclusions (1-5 µm) of thorite (ThSiO4). On the other hand, zircon is fairly metamictizated giving rise to malacon. Zeta potential tests showed that the isoelectric points of xenotime and zircon correspond to a pH value of 4.5 and 4.7, respectively.The pretreatment with HCI and HNO3 displaced the isoeletric point (IEP) of the minerals to the left. The microflotation tests indicated that the floatability of both untreated and treated minerals are quite similar in the presence of the collectors studied in this work. Adsorption mechanisms are also suggested.

Within the national and international strategy of the German based construction company HOCHTIEF, the majority of its business units is equipped with the comprehensive software package ARISTOTELES. This software is a powerful business information system for all accounting and controlling related processes in medium-sized and large construction and other related companies. Due to the complexity of the software, time constraints, and limited financial resources an implementation of this software package requires thorough project management. In this paper the relevant elements of project management are outlined based on practical experiences gained during this international IT - implementation project. Special emphasis is directed to the identification and management of potential risks. In this case particular acknowledgement was given to the multinational nature of the project and modernization of the business. This includes thorough reorganization of the company, significant changes of job requirements, and substantial trainings for its employees. At the same time key success factors like knowledge transfer, adoption of Czech legal requirements, commitment of management, networked thinking, and integrated project planning come into play. The costs for implementation had to be carefully evaluated because the software was implemented in a country with a considerably low cost I price level. All these impacts to the business had to be managed within the scope of transformation of business and political environment from socialist to market driven economy.

Although there was a significant improvement in the world economy, recovery in the iron and steel industry followed its traditional pattern and lagged the general economic recovery in 1983. World crude steel production increased from 645 Mt (711 million st) in 1982 to 664 Mt (732 million st) in 1983, an increase of less than 3%. Domestic iron and steel production showed a modest increase over 1982. Weekly raw steel pro¬duction levels ranged between 1.5 and 1.75 Mt (1.6 and 1.9 million st) for the last 10 months of 1983, compared with less than 1.25 Mt (1.4 million st) for the last half of 1982. The peak was 2.5 Mt (2.7 million per st) per week in 1978-79. This how level of steel operations kept most pelletizing and sintering operations at curtailed production levels. Extended shut-downs of pellet plants were also common. Pressure by management to reduce operating costs has continued with an increasing emphasis on maintaining quality and efficient unit productivity. With the extended decline, there have been significant personnel reductions in both operating and headquarters staffs. Many companies are anticipating a long-term how growth period in the iron and steel sector. Pelletizing Domestic pellet production showed a slight increase last year to about 34 Mt (38 million st), less than 50% of total capacity. What is indicative of the inevitable is the announced intention to chose down facilities, such as US Steel Corp.'s Atlantic City ore operations pellet plant at Lander, WY, and the recent aborted move by US Steel to purchase National Steel with the apparent intent to chose the National pellet plant in Keewatin, MN. There is excess domestic pellet capacity that will not be needed. The question is what form attrition will take. South American pellets can be brought into the Chicago area at a cost competitive with Great Lakes plants. This raises the possibility that imported pellets can, in fact, displace domestic pellets at almost any US steel plant. The need to re duce total production costs at domestic pelletizing plants is crucial. Efforts to reduce fuel costs for pelletizing have focused on re placing natural gas or fuel oil with coal. More recently, petroleum coke has become available at an attractive cost, but systems must cope with its higher sulfur con tent, which limits its potential The direct firing of grate-kiln systems with pulverized coal hay been fully proven. The use of solic fuel in the straight-grate process however, is still being developer and no straight-grate system i running on solid fuel alone. The further development o coal-water slurry systems may provide a suitable fuel for both systems. It would appear, how ever, that the same ash quality restriction would hold for coal water systems as for direct-firin systems. So, the choice is based of the relative cost and convenience of a wet-grinding system with additives, compared with a dry-grind direct-fired unit. The high-temperature (two stage) heat recuperation system installed at US Steel's Minnta plant (Step III) has provided the fuel savings anticipated, any modification of additional in durating lines is planned. Other operators are hooking at similar heat recuperation improvement. Another area of potential cost savings has been in the reduction of bentonite requirements. A CCI's Tihden plant, major improvements have been made in this area. Progressive bentonit reductions were achieved over several years from the 8- to 9-kg (16- to 18-lb per st) range to the 5-k (12-1b) level by progressive moisture reductions and chose attention to operating practice. "Fully grouted rock bolts have been used in mining industry for many years. Significant research has been conducted to evaluate the load transfer behavior of fully grouted rock bolts with experimental programs. However, compared with that, less work has been conducted with analytical modelling. Therefore, in this paper, the authors used an analytical model to study the load transfer behavior of fully grouted rock bolts. To confirm the credibility of this analytical model, an in-situ pull-out test was used to validate this model. There was a close match between the experimental result and the analytical result. Following this, a parametric study was conducted with this analytical model. The influence of coefficients, Young’s modulus of the rock bolt and the diameter of the rock bolt on the load transfer performance of rock bolts were studied. Furthermore, the load distribution along the fully grouted rock bolt was analytically studied. The results show that the axial load in the rock bolt decayed from the loaded end to the free end independent of the pull-out load. However, the trend of the load distribution curve was influenced by the pull-out load. This paper was beneficial to better understand the load transfer mechanism of fully grouted rock bolts.INTRODUCTIONRock bolts have been used in the mining industry for a long time. They are used as the reinforcement tendons to keep the stability of openings in underground mining and the slope in open-pit mining. Furthermore, rock bolts are commonly used not only in the mining engineering, but also in civil engineering (Thompson, Villaescusa, and Windsor, 2012).The rock bolt is a tendon which can be a rod or a cable inserted into a borehole drilled in rock masses or soils. Traditionally, the material of rock bolts was steel. However, engineering practices showed that the steel rock bolts can be easily corroded by the moist environment in underground mines. Next, Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) was used to manufacture rock bolts, which are termed as FRP rock bolts. Experimental results proved that the FRP rock bolts can effectively reinforce the surrounding rock masses without being corroded (Wang et al., 2018)."

INTRODUCTION FMC's Paradise Peak mine, located 13 Ian (8 miles) south of Gabbs, Nevada, became opera¬tional in April of 1986 (Figure 1). It was designed and built by Davy McKee, who was instrumental in equipment design and selection. It is the 7th largest gold deposit in the United States with defined reserves of 10.9 mt (12 million st) containing 34 million gms (1.1 million tr oz) of recoverable gold and 933 million gms (30 million tr oz) of recoverable silver. The mine extracts ore by the open-pit method, taking advantage of a 1.5:1 stripping ratio. The mill operates at a 3600 mt/day (4000 st/d) capacity. Crushing is done in three stages to achieve an ore size of minus 0.635 cm (0.25 inches). Grinding further reduces the ore to 85% minus 100 mesh. The ground ore is treated with cyanide in agitated leach tanks and then washed in the counter-current decantation (OCD) thickeners. Zinc is added to the clarified, deaerated pregnant solution to precipitate the precious metals. The precipitate is acid digested to eliminate excess zinc, filtered and retorted to drive off contained mercury. The retorted precipitate is then fluxed, melted and poured through cascade molds. Dore bars are cleaned for shipment and the slag is sent to an in-house slag treatment system. ELECTROSTATIC SEPARATION The dry electrostatic slag treatment system at Paradise Peak is the first installation of its kind. Electrostatic separation has been widely used in mineral processing since the early 1950's. A brief discussion of the theory behind the process is helpful to those not familiar to electrostatic separation. Charging and sepa¬rating slags, dry minerals or other materials by ion bombardment is the most common form of electrostatic separation. Millions of tonnes of minerals are processed each year by this method. In an ion bombardment separation, granular material is fed onto a grounded metal cylinder (or roll) and charged by a corona-producing electrode placed above the roll's surface (Figure 2). While both conductors and non¬conductors become charged, only the conductor is able to lose its charge. The charged non¬conductor, as it rests on the roll's surface, "sees" an oppositely charged image of itself in the metal surface. It is attracted to the image charge, becomes electrostatically pinned to, and moves with the roll's surface. The conductive particle also sees an image and is attracted to it. But upon touching the roll's surface, it discharges rapidly to the grounded surface and is thrown free from the roll's surface with a projectile motion. In the case of precious metal slags, the con¬ductive particles would be metallic prills of dore metal; and the nonconductive particles would be the slag, free of metal. Middling grains, generally, are in the form of a metallic prill encased in or incompletely liberated from slag. LABORATORY TESTING A number of precious metal slag samples have been tested in the laboratory. It has been found that the composition of slags vary widely from one refinery operation to another. Typical laboratory procedure is to crush and size the slag followed by two-stage lab-scale electro¬static separation. The conductor fractions from the first and second pass are then combined as a prill concentrate; middlings fraction and clean slag tailings from the second pass are held separate. Selected results from laboratory testing are shown in Table 1. It is important to note in Table 1 that the assays represent overall silver and gold, not metallic values. From experience, the laboratory results are typically lower in grade and recovery than the industrial installations. This is largely due to the hydroscopic nature of precious metal slags coupled with the high local humidity in Carpco's Jacksonville, Florida, location. "In today’s fast paced, globally competitive world, reliability and machine uptime are of the utmost importance to a successful operation. Along with these targets more emphasis is being put on cost reduction and decreasing the environmental impact of the overall system. To achieve these goals, automatic lubricators and lubrication systems have been used in many industries for years and are now becoming a common tool in the mining industry as well. These systems are able to provide proper lubrication amounts at the proper times autonomously, helping to keep the machines running smoothly while minimizing the physical support required. Copper mines in the southwest have begun utilizing auto lubrication to avoid mistakes and unplanned shut downs on critical equipment. This paper will describe the engineering behind these products and review case histories where these tools have been successfully utilized in the mining industry. INTRODUCTION In a dirty, dusty, wet environment, where machine uptime is imperative, proper lubrication of bearings is the only way to survive. With the push for cost reduction and mines striving to lower their environmental impact and increase worker safety according to MSHA guidelines, the old lubrication practices have come under scrutiny. It is no longer encouraged or cost effective to have maintenance personal walk from point to point throughout the entire mine pumping a shot of grease into each bearing once per shift. Automatic lubricators and lubrication systems have been on the market for years but recently, as the market focus has changed and technology has developed, the use of these systems has begun to rise in the mining industry. Automatic lubrication systems can be as simple as a single point lubricator lubricating one (1) bearing or a more complex system lubricating numerous bearings. With system design, the automatic lubricator provides a preset amount of grease to a bearing at regular, predetermined intervals. The systems designed to lubricate more than one bearing contain grease pumps of some design and possibly PLC controllers which can be used to remotely adjust and monitor the system. As can be seen in Figure 1, the right amount of lubrication can be achieved much more reliably with automatic lubricators. Depending on application needs, the market now has products to fit almost every wish list. This paper is going to focus on the single point systems that are lower in cost but are still being effective."

Rock damage around underground excavations has been an important hazard in mines and tunnels. Rock dilation generates buckling that needs to be contained before it causes damage to equipment or safety concerns to mine workers. In seismically active mines, rockburst occurrence has been widely recognized as one of the most important hazards in deep mines and tunnels. While there is a wide range of cases where rockburst hazard can be mitigated through dedicated excavation sequences, reentry procedures or exclusion zones, there are still many situations where large unexpected rockbursting may occur, relying only on rock support as the last mitigation measure to prevent production and safety losses. Considering the previous situations, surface support as mesh, plays a major role containing the failed/ejected rock and providing a safe working environment to the underground operations. While there have been considerable achievements in improving mesh resistance, with more than 26Kj/m2 of energy dissipation capacity, there is still a lack of research in the overlapping mechanism and load transfer between contiguous mesh elements. This paper presents the state of the art in static and dynamic analysis of welded and rolled mesh overlaps, based on experimentation carried on by Geobrugg in their Research Center, leaving clearly established that the difference in meshes is not only in levels of energy absorption, but also concluding that in the case of high resistance rolled meshes overlapping is not necessary and the transmission of stresses can be fully guaranteed by using suitable connecting elements. All these characteristics, supported by operational advantages as light weight and mechanized mesh installation, provides a considerable improvement in safety and productivity, improving the economic value of the project

The Butte quartz monzonite is the host rock for early porphyry copper style mineralization and subsequent mesothermal-epithermal, enargite-gold style veining that transects the district. The east-west Anaconda system veins: including the Emma, Anaconda-Original, Syndicate, Badger-State, and Alice-Rainbow veins, each with strike lengths of over 12,000 feet and vertical continuity in excess of 4,500 feet, along with mining widths from 5 to 50 feet, are unique to Butte. The incredible dimensions and tenor of these veins have yet to be surpassed and Butte is still touted as being the “Richest Hill on Earth.” The Anaconda Company was formed in 1895 to develop underground copper reserves in the district and eventually consolidated all operations under one company. Production from underground mining continued through the mid-1970’s. Open pit mining in the Berkeley pit began in 1955 with the extraction of supergene ores, along with the remnants of deeper horsetail zones inaccessible to the underground mines. Operations in the Berkeley pit were suspended in mid-1982 because of the rejection of high arsenic, copper concentrates at major smelting facilities throughout the world. Bulk mining of porphyry style mineralization in the Continental pit began in January 1980 to supplement copper production while stripping “C” pushback in the Berkeley pit. The Anaconda Smelter closed in September 1980. A molybdenum circuit was added to the Butte Concentrator in 1981 and mining continued in the Continental pit to produce copper and molybdenum concentrates. A blend of Berkeley and Continental ores were processed to dilute penalty metals in the final concentrates marketed to toll smelters. All mining operations ceased mid-1983 when Anaconda closed the Continental pit and offered the property for sale. Montana Resources reopened the Continental pit in June 1986 to produce copper and molybdenum concentrates. Operations were suspended mid-2000, because of exorbitantly high power prices, but resumed in November 2003 with rising metal prices. Bulk open pit mining of the early porphyry style mineralization has sustained production over the past twenty years and mining is expected to continue in the Continental pit with favorable prices. Future mining will eventually develop a 500 million-ton geologic resource incorporated in a supergene enrichment blanket situated between the Berkeley pit and the Continental pit. Grades in this enrichment blanket range in the neighborhood of 0.5% copper.

One aspect of long-range mine planning in an open-pit mine is first to define the ultimate pit limit, i.e., the projected size and shape of the pit at the end of its life. This chapter is concerned with various techniques that are currently in use today in determining the ultimate pit limits using the computer. Prior to the early 1960's, open-pit limits analyses were entirely performed manually. This manual technique has been well explained by Soderberg and Rausch in Surface Mining (1968). Soderberg and Rausch also explain clearly the need for establishing the ultimate pit limits in long-range mine planning, i.e., location of surface facilities, dumps, etc. Consequently, the need for ultimate pit limit design will not be reiterated here. Nor will the definitions of the most commonly accepted terminologies such as break-even stripping ratio, economic cutoff grade, ultimate and working slope angles, preproduction stripping, etc. be repeated here. Briefly, the objective of the ultimate pit limit design (which is also frequently referred to as pit design in short) is to determine the projected final pit limits of an ore body and its associated projected grade and tonnage, which will maximize some prespecified economic criteria while satisfying practical operational requirements.

Throughout all segments of the United States mining industry, 163 independent contractor employees were fatally injured between 1990 and 1997. Factors that contributed to these injuries were identified after reviewing descriptive information contained in Mine Safety and Health Administration fatality reports for each of the incidents. Thirty-three unique contributing factors were identified and multiple factors were noted for each fatality. Those most frequently discerned were "failure to follow `standard operating procedures"', (35% of the fatalities), "poor positioning of employee" (26% of the fatalities) and "failure to maintain equipment" (23% of the fatalities). Contributing factors were then associated with the accident and job classifications of the victims. Factors having the highest frequencies in the top five accident classifications where most fatalities occurred were as follows: powered haulage - "failure to maintain equipment"; machinery - "poor positioning of employee"; slip/fall of person - "inadequate fall protection" and "failure to wear safety line"; electrical - "equipment contact with power line"; and falling/rolling/sliding rock - "poor positioning of employee. " Among the job classifications in which most fatalities occurred, leading contributing factors were as follows: truck driver - "failure to follow standard operating procedures" and "poor positioning of employee"; laborer/utility man/pumper - "poor positioning of employee"; mechanic/ repairman and welder - "failure to follow standard operating procedures." Recommendations for utilizing contributing factor information as a basis for safety training are proposed. Training programs may be developed that inform independent contractor employees of factors which, in the past, have contributed to fatal injuries in their job classifications. Then, by combining this information with contributing factors identified in "related" accident classifications, a truly focused training intervention that addresses very specific workplace hazards may he developed.

INTRODUCTION Underground mining causes disturbances of the primary state of stresses. Resulting from those disturbances a loss of stability of rocks that surround excavation may occur interrupting the production and creating life danger for the personnel. One of the manifestations of such an instability is a rock burst phenomenon which mainly occurs at great depths. From the mechanical mint of view the rock burst is a loss of stability /Filcek et a1.,1984; Pietuchow and Linkow, 1976/ due to : - quasi-static stress changes in the surrounding rocks; we will call it s seam burst , - dynamic stress changes in the surrounding rocks caused by rock shocks ; we will call it roof burst. Possibility of the rock burst occurrence Is uniquely determined by the state of stresses existing in the rock mass. In the following sections of the paper we will consider different aspects of this question. Moreover distributions of displacements and failure criteria for a coal seam at longwall mining will be defined. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Determination of the vertical stresses and displacements resulting from longwail mining will be based on the Budryk’s idea of a stress wave /Salustowicz, 1955/. The idea originates from the analysis of a roof plate /beam/ resting on the deformable foundation /Sean/ and subjected to the cylindrical bending. Equation of the bending lice uniquely defines vertical stresses and displacements which are induced in the seam. The equation will account only the shear force effect. Surfactants are used to control the interfacial properties of the gas-liquid and liquid-solid inter- faces inflotation. This paper investigates the dynamic adsorption of surfactants at the gas-liquid intelface. The dynamic adsorption process was modeled by considering the surfactant mass transfer to the gas-liquid interface by dimion and the Langmuir and Frumkin adsorption isotherms. The numerical computation was applied to solve the non-linear governing equations. The dynamic adsorption was measured in tenns of the dynamic surface tension using the pen- dant drop method. The theoretical modek were compared against the experimental data obtained with non-ionic (Dowfroth 250) and ionic (sodium dodecylbenzene sulfate, SDBS) surfactants. The theoretical results agreed well with the erperimental data for SDBS, but not for Dowfrother 250, especially for the initial stage. Reasons for the variation in results are given in the paper.

The iron ore industry presently utilizes two types of de-posits. The first are the high grade deposits generally located in remote areas and, secondly, the low grade de-posits which are normally found nearer to the steel-making centers. The high grade deposits produce a direct shipping ore which has an iron content which may be close to the maxi-mum 70% of Fe. These deposits have reserves which are ex-pressed in billions of tons. The ore needs little or no up-grading and where this is performed is restricted to ore washing. With the large demand for iron ore pellets, plus a national drive to perform as much of the upgrading as possible in the native country, there is a trend to erecting pellet plants at the mine location~ Large iron ore suppliers such as Australia, Brazil, Venezuela and Liberia already have pellet plants in operation, and there are new plants projected or expansion projects under study. The low grade ores are mined at locations closer to steel mills such as in Minnesota, Michigan and Canada. These low grade ores require methods of beneficiation to obtain a commercially accept-able product with the modern beneficiation techniques it is no~, possible to produce iron ore pellets of 68% Fe and 4.5% silica from ores containing as low as 26% Fe. Figure 1 gives a general picture of the types of iron ores and their beneficiation. The final product of the high grade ore is a coarse concentrate, sinter product or pellets. The final product of the low grade ores is pellets and, in some cases, coarse concentrates.

The European Economic Community (The Common Market) is now shifting from I a coal oriented to an oil oriented economy. The proportion of energy supplied by oil has increased from only 13% in 1950 to 38% in 1962, and will approach 50% by 1970. In the past five years Common Market petroleum demand has in- creased 15% per year compared with only 3% per year in the United States. This rapid shift to oil can be explained by looking at oil's competition, First; there is simply not enough other energy - European coal, natural gas and hydro-electric power - to meet the demand, Secondly, oil?s primary competing energy in the Common Market is coal, and Community coal is high-priced - it costs more than two and a half times as much as U. S, coal at the pithead. The third reason for the shift to oil is consumer preference for the ease of handling, convenience and cleanliness of liquid fuels. As these reasons suggest, much of the shift to oil and the resulting growth in demand would have occurred whether or not the Common Market organization had existed. On the other hand, the Common Market has stimulated the use of oil by causing a higher rate of energy consumption, and oil has been the beneficiary of most of this growth.
