San Diego’s need to access underground space has dictated a long history of tunnel construction. The subsequent need for water, coupled with San Diego’s natural attractiveness, has led to significant population increases and the need for the construction of even more tunnels. This paper will provide a historical summary of the progression of mines, tunnels and trenchless technology construction projects that contributed to the advance of current technology, feasibility, and constructability. A bibliography of relevant reports and data is included.

Iron ore pelletizing using compressive and shear action on wet mixture feed has been studied. The physical properties, namely, moisture content, drop strength, green compressive strength (GCS), dry compressive strength (DCS), porosity, and cold crushing strength (CCS), have been studied. Pelletizing tests were carried out on four different types of ore, namely, hematite ore, magnetite ore, goethite ore, and sinter return fines. The inference of shear forces on silica distribution index in dry pellet has been studied using optical and scanning electron microscopy. Significant improvement in physical strength was observed due to compressive and shear forces on the pellet mixture feed. However, decrease in moisture content and ball porosity has been observed. Silica distribution index improved by 1.72 times for hematite ore, 1.47 times for magnetite ore, and 1.68 times for goethite ore. It has been found that bubble cavity has been reduced which is good indicator in terms of physical properties.

Dumper operators are frequently exposed to whole body vibration (WBV) in surface mines. Surface mining activities involve the amalgamation of comparatively high intensity of vibration and extended exposure durations. Efficient risk reduction mandates knowing of important phases of a task that poses a threat to health of dumper operators. So far in India very limited studies have been reported on WBV exposure with regard to surface mines. This paper evaluates WBV of dumper operators based on ISO 2631-1:1997 Standards and European Union (EU) Directive 2002 for different phases of job cycle. Six dumpers were considered for this study and the vibration measurements were made for all the four phases of the job cycle by placing the triaxial accelerometer on the operator’s seat-surface and at the seat-back, independently. The findings of the study revealed that the haulage task (loaded travel and empty travel) remains the chief contributor to vibration exposure according to seat-surface and seat-back measurements. Maximum frequency weighted root mean square (RMS) of 1.12 m/s2 and 1.09 m/s2 were reported for empty travel task for seat-surface and seat-back measurements, respectively. For seat-surface measurements based on RMS, Z axis remains as the dominant axis of vibration for all the dumpers during haulage task, whereas for seat-back measurements, the dominant axis varies between X and Y. Exposure action value (EAV) based on RMS has exceeded the threshold value of 0.5 m/s2 for all the dumpers during loaded travel and empty travel for seat-surface as well as for seat-back measurements.

The present article reports the recovery of potassium from mica scrap using carbide lime waste and NaCl. The acid leaching of mica [4 M H2SO4 at 90 °C] can recover a maximum of 25% potassium. However, in the chlorination roasting (with CLW and NaCl) water leaching process, it was possible to recover potassium to the tune of 94% [900 °C, 50 min roasting; mica:CLW:NaCl 1:0.75:1]. The formation of water-soluble phase like sylvite (KCl) and water-insoluble phases like anorthite ( CaAl2Si2O8) and nepheline ( NaAlSiO4) confirms the complete breakdown of the mica crystal structure. The extraction mechanism proceeds with the formation of a transition state followed by the release of potassium as KCl. The characterisation studies using ICP-OES, XRD, FTIR and FESEM support the proposed extraction mechanism. The salt produced by the evaporation of roast-leached liquor confirms the presence of sylvite and halite only, which can be separated to get the fertiliser grade KCl.

"Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have advocated the use of instrumentation in underground mine ground control studies to aid in understanding failure mechanisms and to calibrate numerical models. The purpose of these efforts is to reduce accidents and fatalities in underground mines resulting from inadequate design of mining layout or supports. A recent examination of some results of stress change measurement raised some questions about the validity of elastic solutions in ground, such as coal. Particularly under deep cover as is prevalent in the western United States, the coal around a borehole would likely have yielded so that post-yield behavior would govern the response of the instrument.A numerical experiment was conducted by NIOSH researchers using the FLAC software (Itasca Consulting Group, 2016) to investigate the response of the borehole pressure cell (BPC) and the biaxial stressmeter to varying degrees of plastic behavior. The pre-encapsulated BPC cell pressure exhibits increasing departure from the elastic case with decreasing post-peak-strength slope of the stress-strain curve. On the other hand, because the BSM usually provides much more confinement to the surrounding rock than does the BPC, the measurements obtained from the BSM do not depart significantly from the changes in secondary principal stresses and directions as calculated by the elastic solution.INTRODUCTIONSeveral years ago, Larson et al. (2000) described several instruments that NIOSH had used in underground field studies and how to monitor them with dataloggers. This information is still relevant because of the need to understand how excavation affects the stability of mines and thus, the safety of mining personnel. One class of instruments described in that paper includes those instruments that measure change in rock stress. Although several such instruments might be used to measure stress change, the focus of this paper is on two instruments with which NIOSH has had more recent experience—the borehole pressure cell (BPC) (Geokon, 2018a; RST Instruments, 2018) and the biaxial stressmeter (BSM) (Geokon, 2018b). Other instruments, such as the CSIRO hollow inclusion stress cell (HICell) (Earth Sciences, 2019; Worotnicki and Walton, 1976) may be included in future studies.Early studies in the development of the BPC were those of Panek and Stock (USBM, 1964), Sellers (1970), Lu (1984), and Babcock (1986). Babcock’s work is particularly useful, but his setting and testing range was far below what we experienced in the NIOSH study, and it was Babcock’s data reduction scheme from his laboratory experiments that was used to calculate stress change in the NIOSH study (NIOSH, 2019a)."

We applied kriging (geostatistics) to interpret the structure of basement rock in Yucca Flat, NTS from borehole data. The estimation error for 118 data is 81 m comparable with those based on both gravity and borehole data. Using digitized topographic data, we tested the kriging results and found that the model validation process (Thomas option) on data gave a fair representation of the overall uncertainty of the kriged values.

Introduction Mechanical classifiers consist of a settling tank with parallel sides and a sloping bottom equipped with a mechanism which continuously agitates the pulp and removes the settled solids. The functions served by mechanical classifiers include the following: (1) allow the particles larger than the desired size to settle in the tank and provide an overflow product with a minimum of oversize particles, (2) produce an overflow product of sufficiently high solids content to meet the requirements of the subsequent processing steps, (3) agitate the pulp and permit separation of the entrapped undersize particles so they can report in the overflow product, and (4) drain and remove the underflow solids from the settling pool. Various types of mechanisms have been used to agitate the pulp and remove the settled solids, which include: (I) endless belt and chain drags, (2) reciprocating rakes, (3) helical flights mounted on a rotating shaft which extends through the settling pool, (4) helical flights inside of a rotating drum which contains the classifier pool, (5) troughed conveyor belts forming the settling pool in the concave curve of the belt closely following the tail pulley, and (6) low-speed impellers agitating the underflow settled in the apex of cone-type mechanical classifiers.23 The principal use of mechanical classifiers has been in closed¬-circuit wet grinding; however, this application has been widely displaced over the past few decades by the hydrocyclone. The hydrocyclone installation, including its feed pump, offers lower capital costs and requires less floor space. Nominally it produces an overflow prod¬uct of higher solids content, compared with a mechanical classifier, for comparable classification size up to 400µm (35 mesh). However, these advantages of the hydrocyclone are being gained at the sacrifice of some of the advantages of the mechanical classifier. The mechanical classifier requires less power and has lower maintenance costs than the hydrocyclone and its feed pump. The underflow product from the mechanical classifier can have a higher solids content and contain less entrapped undersize particles than the comparable product from the hydrocyclone. Consequently, it is capable of operating at a higher classification efficiency. A reduced circulating load24, 25 results under these conditions in a closed-circuit grinding application. Other applications for mechanical classifiers include desliming, dewatering, and washing operations. Sand-slime separation may be achieved using one or more stages of mechanical classifiers. Typical applications would include washing and deslimining of concrete aggre¬gate or sand; glass sand; abrasives; oyster shells; phosphate rock; iron, nickel, and chromium ores; alumina; zeolites; solar salt; and precipitates from chemical processing. As an example for the latter, Bitzer26 recommended the use of mechanical classifiers for countercur¬rent cementation-in-pulp of copper from the leach liquor. Similarly, mechanical classifiers are used in uranium processing27 for separation of the barren sands from the pregnant leach solution. Depending on the particle size and the effectiveness of the sand¬slime separation, the sand product from mechanical classifiers may be drained to solids content approaching 84%. Thus, mechanical classifiers are frequently used as dewatering equipment for various applications, such as: 1) Make a product having suitable solids content for subsequent transport by belt conveyor. 2) Provide a drained product to reduce cost of drying. 3) Provide a drained, washed, heavy sand product for return to the circuit. 4) Recover fine values from dilute plant effluents from coal, sand, phosphate-rock, and iron-ore washing plants and from steel-mill flue¬dust scrubbers. 5) Drain residual reagents of a preceding process stage prior to conditioning with reagents of different characteristics, e.g., cationic¬anionic flotation of phosphate rock, iron ore, etc. Design and Operating Features The proper selection of mechanical classification equipment re¬quires that the properties of the solids and liquid are adequately de¬fined. The following descriptive information regarding the solids is desired: feed rate, chemical and physical composition, density, tem¬perature, size analysis, and desired separation size. For the liquid used, the following data would be needed: feed rate, density, viscosity, pH, and temperature. Settling Area. The pool area required to permit a particle larger than the separation size to settle depends on the density and shape of the particle and on the density and viscosity of the pulp within the classifier pool. These criteria of the solids and pulp determine the settling rate which, in turn, determines the settling area required. Determination of the settling rate by long-tube batch tests can be used to calculate the settling area. A theoretical approach for estimat¬ing the settling area requirements is discussed in Chapter 1, Classifica¬tion Theory. This procedure can be used when neither test data nor empirical data from similar operations are available. Data on settling-area requirements and settling rates have been compiled by the manufacturers of mechanical classifiers. The approxi¬mate settling area required for a particular separation size can be estimated by using the curve shown in Fig. 65. This curve applies for closed-circuit grinding applications. For dilute velocity classification in open circuit, desliming, the length of the overflow weir, W, multiplied by the weir's mean distance from the feed opening, E, is used as the design criterion, instead of the settling area, in sizing the classifier. The area requirements, W X E, for dilute velocity classification can be expressed in terms of volumetric flow, Q, and settling rate, Rs, as follows: W x E = Q/(18.06 Rs) where W and E are feet, Q is gallons per minute, and Rs is inches per second. Overflow Weir. The hydraulic head, and thus the velocity at which the overflow crests the overflow weir, is one of the factors controlling the particle size of classification. Consequently, the length of the overflow weir must be designed to provide the overflow velocity which allows the particles larger than the desired size of classification to settle in the working area of the pool. The concept of green mining is to improve the mining industry in a holistic way so that it is safe, efficient, and environmentally sustainable. The purpose of this study was to develop an evaluation index system of green surface mining based on the theory of green grades. The evaluation model is comprised of three attributes (safety, efficiency, and environment), nine criteria, and 35 indicators. The fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method was used to determine the weights of indicators by taking into consideration degree centrality, closeness centrality, and betweenness centrality. Findings indicate that the environment is the most critical aspect of green surface mining, followed by efficiency and safety. The top five ranked green mining success indicators were the application of new technology, starting-off-rate of equipment, science and technology input to total investment, the number of accidents (decreased), and the production (increased). It was observed that more improvements are needed to overcome water, air, waste, and sound pollution. Attention should also be paid to land reclamation and post-mining land uses, which are key factors in green mining. The proposed model can be applied to evaluate and improve the level of green surface mining in other regions. This study provides a tool for decision-makers that can offer technical assistance to green mining.

18.1-RAILROAD JOHN W. BRAUNS Conventional railroad haulage can be employed at both open-pit or strip and underground mines-in the latter case, largely for transfer of ore from distant openings to processing plants, or processed material to loading points or docks, using standard hopper cars for bottom unloading or gondolas for rotary dumping. The major application, however, is in surface mining for moving ore and/or waste out of the pit to a crushing plant or dump. Consequently, the following will deal largely with this phase of railroad operation, though the conclusions apply equally, for the most part, to other rail-type surface haulage. In surface mining, trains consisting of a locomotive and gondola or side-dump cars suitable for loading by power shovels are used. Gondolas are restricted to hauling ore as a rotary dumper is required. Side-dump cars are more versatile, carrying both ore and waste, but because of their additional dumping mechanism they are likely to be more expensive to maintain.' Also they weigh up to twice a flat-bottom car of the same capacity and. therefore, fewer" cars can be hauled per train. Standard-gage track is most commonly used. Track systems incorporate low-quality temporary track where moves are frequent and permanent high-quality track on main lines. Rail haulage can be used alone, or in combination with other surface haulage methods, thus permitting a selection best adapted to the peculiar requirements of each mining project. 18.1.1---GENERAL APPLICABILITY, CONTROLLING PHYSICAL CONDITIONS For handling rough rock, the shovel-train system is unexcelled.' The ideal applica¬tion is in a large, but not excessively deep, open pit mine from which the coarsely blasted ore and waste must be transported over 3 mi. If. in addition, a high production rate is to he maintained, railroad haulage probably will afford a lower cost per ton transported. Grade must he relatively gentle-usually 3% uphill and 4% downhill. The greater the differences in elevation involved, the greater are the track grade space requirements; for example, a 3 c ramp out of a pit only 300 ft deep is almost 2 mi long. Main-line track locations should he selected carefully so that the number of moves during the life of the mining operation can he kept to a minimum. This applies both to the ore haulageway and that for waste. Such moves are not only expensive, but are difficult to execute without adversely affecting production rates. The large mine affords greater opportunities for judicious location of semipermanent trackage. Figs. 18-1 and 18-2 illustrate typical track layouts. The effect of terrain in considering railroad haulage is confined chiefly to the initial cost of the installation. Grade construction in mountainous territory is ap¬preciably more expensive. However, if that expense can be borne, the subsequent maintenance cost of trackage will not he much higher than in areas of low relief.

This investigation addressed the possibility of producing pellet feed at a silica content of = 1.0% using a representative sample of Samarco´s mechanical flotation tailings. This sample contained 11.0% Fe and presented an F80 = 116 µm and a d50 = 63 µm. The higher silica content was verified in the coarser fractions and the higher iron content in the fraction -37 µm. Specular hematite is the most abundant mineralogical phase in the fraction -37 µm. The technological tests used one of four methods: magnetic concentration using a wet high-intensity magnetic separator, magnetic concentration using a SLon high-gradient magnetic separator, reverse flotation or direct flotation. The methods using the magnetic concentrator SLon, reverse flotation and direct flotation did not present results meeting the target of the study: iron content in the concentrate (rougher stage) greater than 34% or iron recovery greater than 80%. Cleaner stages were not achievable with the resulting concentrates. In contrast, the most successful method consisted of using wet high-intensity magnetic separators (WHIMS) as a rougher stage and reverse flotation as a cleaner stage. Using this route, it was possible to produce a pellet feed with a silica grade of 1.0% and high specular hematite content.

Coal spontaneous combustion is one of the disasters occurring in underground coal mines. As a typical case, the spontaneous combustion of broken coal left in the longwall gobs often happen which could greatly interrupt the normal mining production. Such concealed thermal event is featured as rapid development and difficulty in locating “hot” spots. If such spontaneous combustion fails to be timely prevented and controlled, a large amount of toxic gases (mainly CO) and smoke could flow and diffuse in the underground working sections, which could present safety hazards for coal miners. In this paper, based on an coal spontaneous combustion event happened in a Chinese gassy mine, the fire ratios derived from the gas composition data obtained through the tube bundle mine atmospheric monitoring system are used in determining the fire status. A comprehensive and collaborative fire extinguishing effort including inert gas injection, underground pressure balance, and sealing enhancement are made to control the fire progress. Simultaneously, the effects of such works to control the spontaneous combustion event have also been quantified using the fire ratios to justify again. Finally, the danger of coal spontaneous combustion in gob is eliminated, and the longwall panel is successfully re-opened for normal production.

The capacity calculation of complex transportation systems involving variable activity times such as encountered in the mining industry are often worked out by means of simulation, which reconstructs waiting times and cycle times. The queuing theory, which mathematically calculates waiting times, has been used mainly to describe the, phenomena. This is due partly to the difficulties encountered in modelling complex systems and partly to the difficulty of reconciling the required time distribution laws with the real phenomena by means of the queuing theory. It is, however, obvious that formulas for capacity calculations would be preferable to simulation procedures because of their higher calculation speed, shorter and more flexible programs and shorter programming work. The calculation procedure presented in this paper is composed of some rather simple models, which are based on the queuing theory, and on some probabilistic and some deterministic considerations. The models are supported by observations, and to some extent by simulations. It has been attempted to find all the components of the cycle time and to include them in a comprehensive model. It is the intention to demonstrate that even quite complex mine transportation systems can be treated by means of the queuing theory with the advantages mentionned above and, without sacrificing the precision of the estimates. The speed of calculation of a wide range of parameter combinations is such that the procedure can be used extensively by a project engineer in the search for optimal modifications of the entire transportation system.

For public organizations, preparing accurate project cost estimates is a critical component in capital project planning. Project delivery methods provide a structured approach to moving projects through the design and construction lifecycle, and typically use cost estimates as key inputs at each stage to determine if the project will advance. As design stages can occur years or even decades before construction contracts are awarded, estimates need to make reasonable assumptions about how the work may be executed (means and methods) as well as potential future market trends so that appropriate values for material pricing, labour costs, escalation, and owner’s costs can be included. This process is challenging enough during stable markets, as historic trends can often be misleading and require a suitable understanding of economic factors to use appropriately. When you mix in the market volatility that has been observed since 2020, developing accurate project cost estimates becomes even more challenging. In cases such as this, having a structured approach to cost estimating that includes an adequate risk-based reserves cannot be overstated as it provides the basis for ongoing project decisions. This paper explores some of the historic and more recent market trends that have impacted key aspects of project cost estimates for capital project planning. It also provides recommendations on how to develop cost estimates for infrastructure projects, with examples from Metro Vancouver, which plans for and delivers regional-scale services to 2.6 million residents. A brief commentary on the use of escalation clauses in contracts is also presented.

Unfortunately, the term "control" has a negative connotation in the minds of many of our operating plant personnel. Whereas the opposite is true of those associated with research and technical centers in our industry. The magnitude of this difference in opinion and actual experience has often proved to be a major factor influencing the success or failure of process control applications. Through the years, many plant people have endured a number of unsuccessful attempts by "outside" people to "optimize" their plants; and these experiences have proved to have had quite a callousing effect on them. On the other hand, in many plants, successful process control efforts have made firm allies of the operating personnel, and have increased the number of metallurgical people who are well qualified and experienced in process control. The instrumentation industry, computer industry, and the mining industry's ability to quantify what is really happening in our processes have grown and developed rapidly since the first control efforts were made in the 1930's (1). Because of this-,: new control opportunities are becoming increasingly more feasible and older well established ones are becoming even more practical and necessary with regard to the economic s of our industry.

In 2009, the Gold Quarry openpit mine experienced multiple large-scale slope failures of the upper east highwall that reduced gold ore extraction for nearly 18 months. The slope failures occurred within a weak, consolidated sedimentary sequence that exhibits strength characteristics that are transitional between soil and rock. Instability initiated as mining exposed the lower, high plasticity subunits of the Carlin Formation. This deformation created preferential flow paths that allowed ground water from the upper sandy subunits to infiltrate low-permeability, clay-rich subunits, thereby enhancing deformation of the slope toe, which, in turn, destabilized the upper portion of the highwall. The outcome was a 160 m high slope failure that had a lateral run-out of 850 m. The effort to return the pit to ore production required geotechnical and hydrogeological investigations and the preliminary remediation mining activity to be concurrent. This required the development of detailed safety procedures and a requirement to modify the remediation design as new results were obtained. An initial challenge was to mitigate a near vertical, 90 m headscarp with localized, blast-induced slope failures. Back-analyses with numerical modeling software indicated that the failure surface could be shallower, which contradicted the initial failure interpretations. Eventually, drilling results confirmed this alternative failure geometry. The final remediation design incorporated shallower slope geometries and an approximately 3 Mt buttress along the base of the Carlin Formation and bedrock contact to reinforce the subunits with residual strength properties. The results are a stable highwall within the Carlin Formation following nearly 10 years of repeated slope failures, and an example of the necessity to conduct appropriate geotechnical and hydrogeological studies during the early stages of a new layback evaluation or new openpit development.

"The presence of enargite (Cu3AsS4) is problematic in gold processing not only because it is environmentally hazardous due to its arsenic content but also because it is refractory, causing both cyanide and oxygen consumption to increase. Selective leaching and treatment of the arsenic would prove advantageous prior to applying conventional gold leaching methods. The reactivity of enargite samples from Butte in Montana and Quiruvilca in Peru were spectroelectrochemically studied under alkaline conditions – pH range of 8-13 – using Raman spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. Raman spectra of the surface were collected during and after potentially cycled voltammograms in order to determine and compare surface species against theoretical EH-pH diagrams constructed from mass-balanced thermodynamic calculations using STABCAL software. Under slightly oxidizing conditions, covellite (CuS) peaks were found in a short matter of time, above ~100mV vs. SHE for pH 9-13, suggesting arsenic leaching specifically occurred. At longer conditioning times, elemental sulfur was observed and tended to passivate the surface. The presence of elemental sulfur suggests that copper was eventually leached from the surface. By operating above pH 12, under slightly reducing conditions near -300mV vs. SHE, arsenic can be selectively leached as thioarsenate (AsS4 3-) or thiosulfate (AsO4 3-) without sulfur formation.IntroductionEnvironmental limitations on the pyrometallurgical processing of ores and concentrates bearing arsenic and other hazardous elements often outweigh those in hydrometallurgical processing, particularly when minerals like enargite (Cu3AsS4) are present. The hydrometallurgical processing of enargite-bearing materials can be broken down into two categories: the co-dissolution of arsenic and copper under acidic conditions, and the selective leaching of arsenic under alkaline conditions. The selective leaching of arsenic would preferably leave behind copperrich sulfide phases, typically chalcocite (Cu2S) and covellite (CuS), which then become more amenable to conventional copper (and gold) processing. Furthermore, selective leaching often employs sulfide (S2-), bisulfide (HS-) or polysulfides (Sx 2-) to first extract the arsenic as AsS4 3- and AsS3 3- (Delfini et al., 2003; Anderson and Twidwell, 2008; Tongamp et al., 2010a,b). However, hypochlorite leaching (Viñals et al., 2003; Curreli et al., 2005; Mihajlovic et al., 2007), ammoniacal leaching (Gajam and Raghavan, 1983), and finegrinding to mechanically activate the enargite surface (Balaz and Achimovicova, 2006) have been investigated to increase the normally slow reaction kinetics. Because gold ores are becoming more refractory due to increasing arsenic contents as a result of enargite, these methods are being examined more closely by the gold-mining industry."

This paper investigates the design approaches taken and the philosophy employed during the construction of the Metropolitan Airport Commission (MAC) storm tunnels, part of the Phase 4 Segment of the MAC Trunk Storm Sewer Project at Minneapolis St.-Paul International Airport, located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. URS Corporation was retained to provide a design and Construction Management (CM)services for the MAC Trunk Storm Sewer Project. A case history of the design and construction challenges of the project is presented. The MAC storm tunnels consisted of the construction of twin 10-foot inside diameter (I.D.) tunnels within 7 feet of an existing 72-inch I.D. storm pipe at the base of a 70-foot high highway embankment. The analysis required during the design stage of the project is discussed. This analysis and our design approach provided a defensible framework and justification to make design decisions on relevant issues including: allowable spacing of new and existing structures; preferred order of construction; expected ground deformation behavior; response of lining types to adjacent construction; and effects of proposed changes to design at the submittal stage and during construction.

Underground mining environments bring occupational health and safety issues with some severe dangers such as mine disasters like explosions. During such events, miners might escape using main access openings, or find a safe haven like refuge alternatives (RAs) to wait and be rescued and evacuated to the surface. In this paper, RAs are explained with their early and current applications. A classification as permanent and portable is explained depending on the conditions and their abilities. This classification is followed by the utilization and survivability of RAs with the requirements and recommendations of the main mining countries. Based on the utilization and survivability constraints, basic human requirements, waiting for a rescue team, and the required physical specifications of RAs during the events are analyzed in detail for various countries with their regulations. Among these, the specification, resistance to the explosion, is discussed in particular, and the studies in the literature are examined in terms of structural deformation. The highest deformed zones, the beneficiation of reinforcing steel components such as stiffeners, and the simulation approaches are investigated through this review.
