The Boddington gold mine is located near Perth in Western Australia in the Saddleback Greenstone Belt, a fault-bounded sliver of Archaean volcanic and shallow level intrusive rocks, surrounded by granitic and gneissic rocks. The mine began operations in 1987, producing about 7.7 t/a (250,000 oz/year) until mining ceased in 2001. Built on the footprint of the original mine, the Boddington gold mine expansion project involved opencut mining from two large pits. Expected gold production is around 31 t/a (1 million oz/year) for the first five years. It will be the largest gold mine in Australia. The mine has proven and probable reserves of more than 622 kt (20 million oz) of gold and has an expected life of more than 24 years. The mine is currently solely owned by Newmont Gold Corp., the world?s second-largest gold mining company, employing around 28,000 people worldwide. The conveyor and belt feeder contract for the Boddington gold mine expansion project was awarded by Aker Kvaerner Clough Murray Roberts (AKCMR) to FLSmidth Conveyor Engineering Inc. in August 2006. The contract involved the design and manufacture of 15 conveyors and 17 belt feeders with belt widths ranging from 450 mm to 2.4 m (18 in. to 96 in.) and conveyor lengths from 16 m to 2,172 m (52 ft to 7,125 ft). The total motor power added up to more than 16,700 kW (22,400 hp). The total length of all belting was almost 11.5 km (7.1 miles), and the total fabricated steel weight was approximately 3.7 kt (4,100 st).

The pneumatic conveying of relatively large abrasive materials by dilute-phase conveying techniques has been applied in the underground mining industry for many years especially for backfilling mines and the hoisting of ore, coal, or rock out of the mines. The technique was extensively used in Europe, especially Germany and Britain for backfilling coal mines with rejects from the coal cleaning plants which not only helped to reduce environmental problems on the surface, but offered support to the overlaying strata in the deep underground mines, Similar techniques are being employed in the U.S.A. especially in uranium mines for the disposal of tailings, the main purpose being to extract a larger percentage of the ore from the pillars especially under weak roof conditions. Other than for the backfilling of abandoned mine entries, pneumatic conveying has not been applied in the mining industry in surface applications. In this paper, some consideration is given to three applications for open pit mining which may prove beneficial, namely hoisting coal up the high wall, sealing off auger holes, and stabilizing the high wall when being undercut by a longwall system.

Wheel loaders became important bulk materials handling tools in the early fifties. As they grew in stature, productivity, reliability, and acceptance, the demand for larger, more rugged machines evolved. In the early sixties, the introduction of a 6-yard model by a major equipment manufacturer led quickly to widespread experimenting and rapid worldwide acceptance in loading blasted rock in stone quarries and smaller metal mines. As the wheel loaders grew in popularity for shot rock loading, larger models, 12- to 15-yard size were developed and saw widespread use by 1970. In the past 20 years, at most quarries and small to medium size mines, most cable operated power shovels have been replaced by large wheel loaders and more recently, hydraulic excavators as the primary loading tool. Wheel loaders larger than the 15-yard class are not used widely. Until about 1970, very few overburden haulage trucks were used in domestic coal mines. About that time, many states started enforcing stringent mine relcamation regulations and in 1977, even more stringent federal legislation was passed. These controls brought about drastic changes in coal surface mining methods in the mountainous areas of Appalachia, in smaller midwestern mines and in the large mines of the western states. Basically, simple material casting methods were replaced at most eastern mines by "haul-back" and "mountain top mining" methods using controlled placement of overburden as it is removed from the coal. These methods dictated much more extensive use of loaders/ shovels and trucks to the point that most coal mining in those areas is now by loader/shovel trucks methods. And those areas have become the home of the country's largest population of large wheel loaders and trucks in the 35- to 85-ton size class with a trend to even larger trucks and shovels. To maintain equal production or provide for growth, the new methods have caused a sharp increase in machine intensity to the extent that at some mines, up to three times as many machines were required to mine a million tons of coal in the late seventies as compared to the machine needs in the sixties. Mining costs and coal prices also took a big jump in the mid-seventies, paralleling the drastic price increases in oil and other forms of energy.

[The two types of sulfide deposits in the Bathhurst Newcastle area are; (a) epignetic fissure deposits, and (b) massive sulfide deposits. Geological evidence has been variously interpreted to suggest a syngenetic origin, a source bed' origin, or a magmatic hydrothermal origin for the massive sulfide deposits. Sulfides disseminated through the black shales and argillites of the host rocks are enriched in S32 (mean value 22.34, S34. = 5.8 per mil) relative to the meteoritic standard of 22.21, and have a broad spread in range of values. S32/S34 ratios of sulfide minerals from the deposits occur in two distinct groups. The massive sulfide deposits exhibit ratios between 21.88 to 22.05, while the fissure deposits exhibit ratios between 22.18 and 22.21. These results suggest two separate sources for the sulfur, each, however, resulting in magmatic hydrthermal deposition because of the narrow spread of ratios in each group. Granite intrusive into the host rocks of the sulfide deposits have a mean K/A age of 386 ± 10 M.Y. Lead minerals in the sulfide deposits have a mean nodel lead age of 370±20 M. Y. Thus the lead minerals and the granite bodies were emplaced during the same major orogenic event. Sulfide minerals from magmatic hydrothermal deposit have a very narrow range of S32/S34 values, as do those of the Bathurst area. It seems reasonable, therefore, that well homogenized magmatic hydrothermal solutions are the most logical source of the sulfide deposits. Furthermore, the homogeneity of the lead isotopic abundance data gives strong independent evidence that the ores are of a magmatic hydrothermal origin.]

The perennial subject of comminution is deserving of a fresh approach if one can be found. This is attempted here by directing attention primarily to principles rather than to theories. While theories attempt to explain how a certain process acts, principles delineate the laws which the action-must follow. Comminution may be defined as the progressive separation of particulate matter. At the present time this is accomplished commercially by applying energy in the form of compressive and, shearing forces. Such forces strain and distort the particles they contact. When-the applied stress locally exceeds the breaking strength at the weakest flaw in the particle, a crack tip forms. The surrounding strain energy flows to the crack tip, which rapidly extends through the particle as a break. The minute changes in shape and the resulting energy flow cause the failure of other highly stressed flaws, with the consequent formation of a progeny (1) of new smaller particles out of its destroyed progenitor. The applied mechanical energy is transformed into strain energy as the particle is distorted, and then into heat when it fails. Only a tiny fraction of the order of 1/1000 of the applied energy necessary for breakage appears as new surface energy in the product particles. The tide has turned. Developments in China that have continued to unfold over the last four years or so have now reached a point where the supply market dynamics of certain industrial minerals have changed significantly. No more is this sea change better exemplified than by the supply market for magnesite, and in particular, its processed derivative grades of dead burned magnesia (DBM), caustic calcined magnesia (CCM), and fused magnesia (FM). But what has compounded the barrage of influencing factors impacting this sector, which include the widespread effects of energy and freight cost increases, has been rising demand from certain end use markets. Clearly, the magnesia market is experiencing bittersweet conditions. But those western producers which have monitored and responded to this market transformation, stand to taste success in the near and medium future. REVOLUTION IN WORLD SUPPLY STATUS In essence, while China, as host to a wealth of magnesite resources in Liaoning province, remains a huge producer of magnesia, its supply dominance on the global magnesia market has been considerably weakened. In future, it will mainly aim to supply domestic, and to some extent east Asian markets. Magnesia consumers outside China are now scrabbling for alternative, ?western? sources of supply. At the same time, magnesia producers outside China that weathered the storm of low cost Chinese DBM and FM imports flooding their regional markets for the last 20 years (and many did not), are busy investing in production capacity increases to meet not just demand from falling Chinese supply, but also demand from end use markets which is picking up. And it is not just a matter of expanding capacity of existing magnesia product lines. In the face of plentiful lower cost DBM and FM substitutes from China over the last couple of decades, many western magnesia producers started to switch their focus to the non-refractory markets (eg. environmental, specialities) which promised lucrative opportunities (and still do) and crucially, a lessening of sales revenue dependence on the DBM refractories market. Now we have the likes of Baymag (Canada), Bommag (Serbia/Turkey), and Kumas (Turkey) not only expanding capacities but seriously considering diversifying into DBM and FM production. Perhaps DSP (Israel), having ceased its famous high purity DBM activity as recently as 2005, might even reconsider a return to the ?other side?. But it?s not all DBM and FM. The CCM and specialities markets are also demanding a response, and so Baymag, DSP, Martin Marietta (USA), Premier Chemicals (USA), Qmag (Australia), MGR (Spain), and Magnifin (Austria) are also stepping up to the market on the non-refractory side. From most accounts, the situation with regard to Chinese supply has been described as one of turmoil, with prices rising, leading to improving opportunities for western producers. The majors are conducting huge expansion programmes, such as Qmag, Magnezit (Russia), and the new look Magnesita (Brazil). Even smaller players such as Causmag (Australia) and Dalmia (India) are looking to increase production. In short, the western magnesia supply sector is witnessing a landmark event in capacity investment and market share penetration as China?s previously dominant role begins to weaken (for a review of western capacity expansions see Industrial Minerals, September 2008, p.28). MERGER & ACQUISITION ACTIVITY Another response of course has been a raft of mergers and acquisitions in order to secure resources and supply outside China. These have included private equity groups taking over Magnesita and Qmag; Imerys entering the FM business through UCM; Peñoles further consolidating the electrical grade FM market by acquiring Minco; Martin Marietta acquiring Morton Salt?s Specialty Magnesia Group; Bomex entering the market through Calmag (now Bommag); LWB acquiring Magnesita; and Magnezit?s pursuit of Slovakian magnesia, with Slovmag aboard while currently wooing SMZ. Interestingly, RHI has gone ?the other way?, and has invested in a state of the art joint venture operation at Dashiqiao, Liaoning, with which it aims to secure high quality feedstock for its Chinese refractory plants. Tata Refractories Ltd has announced intentions to follow suit, and other majors, such as Qmag are known to be interested in seeking options. Naturally, there is now renewed interest from several parties in the idled 50,000 tpa DBM/10,000 CCM Jormag facility, Jordan, and the commercially undeveloped Zhargat project, Saudi Arabia. Elsewhere, there will no doubt be suitors for stakes in SMZ, in Slovakia, and Magnohrom, in Serbia, whose respective ownerships are on the block. THE ?CHINA FACTOR? The ?China factor? has been key to magnesia?s market change, and has significantly influenced prices and availability of material to global markets. Resources & production China hosts the largest share of the world?s magnesite deposits, accounting for 26% or 3,319m. tonnes of predominantly sparry magnesite (followed by North Korea, 24%, and Russia, 22%; Wilson 2008). China accounts for 44% of total world magnesite mined (19m. tonnes in 2007) and 50% of the total world magnesia produced (8.2m. tonnes CCM, DBM, FM; Wilson 2008). Russia follows China at 13% of magnesia supply, illustrating China?s dominance of magnesia production. Apart from one producer in Shandong province, central eastern China, the country?s magnesite resources and production are concentrated around the cities of Haicheng and Dashiqiao in Liaoning province, north-east China. Although there are also producers in the Xiuyan district of south-east Liaoning, the Haicheng-Dashiqiao Magnesite Belt hosts the majority of producers. In total these may number 200-300 of large,

Although blasting remains the most inexpensive method of fragmentation in hardrock mining, the significance of the costs of blast-induced rockmass damage in terms of mining efficiency and safety is becoming increasingly recognized. There is no straightforward and systematic method of adequately measuring blast damage in on-going mining operations. This paper considers various techniques available to measure blast damage, making particular reference to recent underground hardrock mine studies. It concludes by proposing a damage audit procedure for integration into routine mine production control.

This paper is concerned with applied platinum resistance thermometry which involves many considerations absent in precision thermometry. The historical development of the Callendar-Van Dusen Equation which describes the resistance- temperature relation of pure platinum is discussed. The advantage of using platinum resistance temperature sensors over thermocouples is described, and the improvements in design and construction of these sensors that have come about in the past few years are discussed. Integral and remote bridges that convert resistance changes into voltage together with signal conditioning techniques and equipment for voltage or current signals are described. Errors encountered in temperature measuring schemes and methods to reduce these errors are summarized.

"Fiber reinforcement has emerged as an alternative to steel bars in precast concrete segments due to advantages such as saving cost and reducing production time while developing a more robust product with improved handling and long-term durability. ACI recently drafted a new report as the first design guideline on FRC tunnel segments to provide specific guidance for this emerging technology. ACI document offers general information on the history of FRC precast segments from tunneling projects throughout the world; a procedure for structural analysis and design based on governing load cases, and a description of the material parameters, tests and analyses required to complete the design. This paper summarizes the design considerations in this ACI guideline prepared by the authors of this paper as the main contributors. Application of this guideline to design of a tunnel with an internal diameter of 5.5 m (18 ft) results in elimination of steel bars.INTRODUCTIONPrecast concrete segments are installed to support the tunnel excavation behind the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) in soft ground and weak rock applications. The TBM advances by thrusting off the completed rings of precast concrete segments that provide both the initial and final ground support as part of a one-pass lining system. These segments are typically designed to resist the permanent loads from the ground and groundwater as well as the temporary loads from production, transportation and construction. Tunnel segments are generally reinforced to resist the tensile stresses at both the Serviceability (SLS) and the Ultimate Limit States (ULS). With traditional rebar, a significant amount of labor is needed to assemble the cages and place the rebar, which results in higher production costs.Fiber Reinforced Concrete (FRC) can be used to enhance the production, handling, and placement of precast concrete segments. This is because of the uniform dispersion of fibers throughout the segment to include the concrete cover, which is very advantageous for resisting the bursting and spalling stresses. These stresses develop as a result of the high loads induced on the segments during the TBM jacking process. The presence of fiber in the concrete matrix helps mitigate against unintentional impact loads during segment handling and tunnel construction operations."

The Society for Mining Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) has a long and proud history of being the world?s leading resource for the dissemination for technical information regarding the fields of mining and mineral extraction and processing. That reputation was met, and maybe even exceeded, with the programming for the Society?s 2014 Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, UT Feb. 23-26. The meeting drew more than 6,700 attendees to the three-day conference that featured more than 90 technical sessions with 670 presentations. These sessions covered the breadth of the mining and minerals industry, but it was the so-called ?softer issues? that were discussed in the keynote session that kicked off the meeting. The keynote session, ?Community Engagement: Building Partnerships for Mining,? brought together some of the leading voices from the mining industry, as well as some of the top voices from nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) that work in the mining sector. The common ground between the panelists was their dedication to working to ensure a social, economic and environmental balance in the development of mines. ?We wanted to bring these NGOs in to begin a dialogue to see how we can work together,? said SME President Jessica Kogel. ?This is a space that SME has not typically operated in, but one in which SME can bring a technical, scientific voice to the discussion. SME wants to play a leadership role in creating partnerships between the technical, social and economic areas that are crucial to the success of any mining project.? In today?s environment, finding mineral deposits and extracting the minerals in an economically viable manner is just one piece of an increasingly complex puzzle. Earning and maintaining a social license to operate requires careful consideration of local and global impacts. The industry often comes under intense scrutiny when a new project is proposed and, therefore, it must strive to meet the highest ethical and environmental standards. Success requires cooperation and collaboration between the industry, community and NGOs.

Jerry is the maintenance planning supervisor and is in charge of preventative maintenance and maintenance scheduling. Jerry's group uses predictive tools to monitor and predict the equipment failure throughout the mine, from pumps to shovels to motors, you name it. The title of Jerry's talk is "If You're Not Using Predictive Tools, You're Behind the Curve." I’ll turn it over to Jerry.

Over a period of seven years (1989-1996) the Mineral Industry Research Laboratory (MIRL) University of Alaska Fairbanks, has investigated the effects of temperature, residence time, and particle size on the degree of low-rank coal (LRC) upgrading for a non-evaporative, hydrothermal drying process, also known as hot water drying (HWD). Three Alaskan LRCs were used in this study: Usibelli coal (Seam No.4) from the Nenana Coal Field, Little Tonzona coal from near McGrath, and Beluga coal from the Beluga-Yentna field on the west side of Cook Inlet. Replicated, factorial tests were conducted. Experimental results indicate that most of the low-rank coal upgrading via HWD occurs rapidly within the first 10-20 minutes of residence time. Thereafter, the upgrading process slows down and over 100 minutes of additional residence time are required to produce similar percentage increases in coal properties to those achieved in the first 10-20 minutes. The properties of the hot water dried products were very sensitive to process temperature. Calorific value, carbon and oxygen contents, equilibrium moisture levels and Hardgrove grindabilities all appear to change linearly with temperature within the 275" C to 325" C range.

Conventional round tank thickeners have been widely used in the mining industry for many years. The mining industry was well satisfied with the ability of conventional thickeners to improve minerals beneficiation operations. However, development of improved flocculants (the polyacrylamides) made possible much more rapid settling rates, since polyacrylamides produce large flocs rapidly (unlike starch or inorganics). Traditionally considered to be a slow operation if maximum underflow density was achieved, and therefore there was some justification for the expense. Thickeners required large volumes to permit sufficient time for settling. The oversize not considered a drawback but the initial capital cost was. In high rate thickeners, a bed of thickened material is allowed to build around the feedwell, even above the bottom of the feedwell. The slurry is fed directly into the bed at a velocity that allows the material to be evenly dispersed over the thickener area This more efficient use of settling area allows a higher solids throughput per unit surface area (rise rate). In this paper, high rate thickener rise rates and polymer consumption are compared.

Since 1986, we have developed a series of electromagnetic (EM) sounding systems at the Laboratory for Advanced Subsurface Imaging (LASI). These may be categorized by their frequency ranges: low frequency (LF, 30 Hz to 30 kHz), medium frequency (MF, 1 kHz to 1 MHz), and high frequency (HF, 30 kHz to 30 MHz). We have applied these EM systems to a variety of targets, including: mapping of plumes of contaminated groundwater, tracing leachate for an in-situ leaching operation, locating buried hazardous waste, identifying subsidence-prone zones and detecting buried voids. These systems are also applicable to exploration for ore bodies. Currently, our sounding system uses a vertical magnetic field vector. Previous systems of this type required a slow and relatively inaccurate manual rotation of the sensing coils. The systems also used occasional calibrations of the measuring system. We have developed a 3-dimensional mathematical rotation procedure for the data, as well as a simultaneous, high-accuracy, calibration method. These new developments have greatly increased the speed of the measurements, as well as improving the accuracy of the ellipticity data. We use stepped-frequency measurements along with narrow-band filtering to allow accurate measurements, even in high-noise areas. We typically obtain ellipticity measurements at eleven frequencies and along densely sampled profile lines. We use neural networks to help interpret the measured ellipticity patterns. Neural networks can be trained to relate the measured ellipticity patterns to earth resistivities or to discrete targets buried in the earth. The neural network training may use theoretical EM responses calculated from computer codes for relatively simple structures. The theoretical EM response for many complex targets that are of interest cannot currently be reliably calculated, even with the largest supercomputers available. We have therefore chosen to do some of the training using theoretical EM responses generated in a full-scale modeling tank located at our Avra Valley Geophysical Test Site. We have also developed data-visualization software to help interpret the large data sets produced by this system.

In February of 1989 the Mission Complex of ASARCO Incorporated completed an expansion of its concentrator, raising the base mining rate from 25,900 TPO (28,500 STPD) to 37,200 TPO (41,000 STPD). The expansion was accomplished by extending the twelve existing Mission ball mills in length, by installing the grinding circuit from Asarco's idled Sacaton Concentrator along with various auxiliary equipment, and by modifications to the flotation circuit and water systems. This paper will give a brief history of the consolidation of the ore body which made the expansion possible and explain the various parts of the expansion.

The Denali Prospect (147° 08' 20" W, 63° 08' 50" N) is located on the south flank of the Alaska Range in the Clearwater Mountains in south central Alaska. (See Figure 1). The mineralization was discovered in 1963 and surface explora¬tion began the following summer. Surface trenching and diamond drilling were used to locate and sample the mineralized zones. In 1969, an adit totalling approximately 1400 feet was completed. In 1970, a -15% grade decline approximately 1800 feet long was completed. Further diamond drilling was done along with both underground programs. Although much work remains to be done to properly evaluate the prospect, results from all the work to date are quite encouraging. This paper will consider the geology of the prospect and the surrounding area, some- aspects of the geochemistry of the sulfides, and the origin of the sulfide deposits. This paper includes data from this writer's Ph. D. dissertation, "Geology and Geochemistry of the Denali Prospect, Clearwater Mountains Alaska" from the University of Alaska and subsequent work.

"INTRODUCTION Shotcrete lining forms an integral part of conventional tunneling and is widely applied for underground excavations. Early strength gain of the shotcrete is a crucial aspect for ground support and safety of operatives. Strength requirements are dependent on various factors such as lining thickness, ground type, excavation size and tunnel depth. The early strength gain is typically monitored using destructive tests, such as needle penetration, stud driving or coring samples for uniaxial compressive strength testing in the laboratory. Being destructive, these tests cannot be directly performed onto the lining without causing damage that must be repaired, which is a particular problem for permanent linings. For this reason and to avoid the need for operatives to work near to exposed ground and/or fresh shotcrete, these destructive tests are often performed on panels, which are sprayed at the same time as the tunnel lining. All current testing methods are also very local, testing only a small part of the lining or a panel, which may not be representative because the temperature history could be significantly different. Therefore, these tests do not provide an accurate or complete picture of the lining strength gain. New testing methods that are non-destructive and can scan the whole lining remotely would be extremely desirable. This paper describes a new method, using thermal imaging techniques, that achieves these aims. It also discusses the real-time on-site application of the method, providing insight into the experience gained and conclusions derived. Shotcrete Shotcrete used for tunnel linings requires immediate strength development. The strength development is a direct result of the hydration reaction of cementitious materials present in it. A progressive sequence of the hydration reaction changes it from a solid suspension (typically referred to as fresh concrete) to a solid skeleton with a porous network and thereafter, into a solid with predominantly discontinuous pores (Byfors 1980). In the case of shotcrete, early strength is needed to support the self-weight and then continuing early age strength gain is required to begin to support ground loads. These strength requirements, along with other workability needs, are met by careful concrete mix design, the use of admixtures, such as accelerator and superplasticizer (BS EN 934-5 2007), and supplementary cementitious materials, such as silica fume."

Synthetic indium-bearing zinc ferrite (IBZF) was mechanically activated by a tumbling mill. Subsequently, the behavior and kinetics of leaching zinc and indium from the initial IBZF and activated IBZF in sulfuric acid solution were investigated. The results demonstrate that the tumbling ball milling enhances the leaching reactivity of IBZF and increases the zinc and indium extractions. The reaction temperature and H2SO4 concentration have an important effect on leaching zinc and indium from the initial IBZF and activated IBZF. The kinetic model -ln(1-x) = kt was used to describe the kinetics of leaching zinc and indium from the initial IBZF and activated IBZF and to calculate the kinetic parameters. The tumbling ball milling causes a decrease in activation energy and reaction order, which indicates that the dissolution of IBZF after mechanical activation by a tumbling mill becomes less sensitive to temperature and H2SO4 concentration. For the zinc leaching, the activation energy decreases from 73.9 to 70.3 kJ/mol and the reaction order decreases from 0.72 to 0.70. For indium leaching, the activation energy decreases from 78.1 to 73.5 kJ/mol and the reaction order decreases from 0.82 to 0.69. It is found that the dissolution rates of the initial IBZF and activated IBZF are controlled by surface chemical reactions.

The generalized rail haulage simulator described in this paper is an outgrowth of the need to expand a previously developed single level simulator to permit analysis of production problems where intermediate car storage is used. Many of the ideas of the former single level simulator, which is an integral part of an Underground Generalized Materials Handling Simulator (UGMHS), have been used in model development. In addition, experience gained in applying the earlier model to a variety of operating conditions has been heavily relied on. The generalized rail haulage simulation model can operate as an independent system and, as such, can be used to analyze rail haulage systems using production distributions as data input. In addition, this model is designed to replace the present rail haulage sub-assembly in the UGMHS model and the linking procedure has been integrated into the model. The flow of coal from production sections in UGMHS, for example, fill the mine cars and a condition of no empty cars at a loading station will shut down in by production systems.

Good morning ladies and gentlemen - today I am in an enviable position for two basic reasons - No. 1, since I am first on the program, the audience should start out awake because those that partied too much last night are still asleep, but in their room, not here. No. 2, since copper, iron, and mining technology are not competitive, the veracity of my statements will not be questioned. Most such meetings I attend are based on the subject of energy and the coal industry does have competition from oil, gas, hydro, and nuclear. However, to counteract this advantage I am the usual engineer with a limited vocabulary by schooling, and the remaining vocabulary almost completely eliminated due to the presence of ladies. In relation to the past of the coal industry, we have not only suffered the competition of other energy sources mentioned before, but in addition have in the last 25 to 30 years been required to meet the demands of a vastly changing market. To explain this statement, I am sure many of you can remember 30 to 40 years back when most homes were heated by coal furnaces or stoves and shudder to recall the shoveling of coal into the fire and the carrying out of ashes with the attendent manual labor dust. Now this space heating portion of our sales has almost become non-existant due to an almost universal switch from coal to natural gas, oil, and electric heating. Actual figures show a decrease from 119 million to less than 28 million tons per year in less than a twenty year span. Also, most of you can remember the coal burning steam locomotives and the tremendous volume of coal they consumed and then the very rapid change to the diesel-electric locomotives, incorporating improved large diesel engines driving D C generators and electric drive motors, which resulted in cheaper motive power. This change over was so complete that the annual tonnage of coal dropped from 125 million to less than 2 million tons in 15 years. 'Actually, now it requires some considerable interrogation and traveling to find a locomotive still operating on steam.
