The Bureau of Mines is engaged in a continuing research effort toward the recovery of alumina from kaolinitic clay and other nonbauxitic domestic minerals. Hydrochloric acid extraction of calcined clay is among the acid processes under consideration. Although aluminum is easily leached from calcined clay, the presence of fines and slimes in the leached residue has hindered the application of this and other acid leaching processes. A clay feed preparation method was therefore developed that eliminated the slimy nature and the separation problems normally associated with leached clay residues. The preparation process consists of crushing the raw clay to minus 20 mesh, dampening the crushed clay with a fine water mist while tumbling on a rotating disk, and calcining the misted clay at 750° C. The misting process increases residue settling rates threefold to 9 cm/min (18 ft/hr) and filtration rates by two orders of magnitude. Leaching-kinetics were determined for misted clay feeds in a batch, stirred-tank reactor. Rapid leaching occurred during the first 85 to 90 pct of the extraction. The linear relationship of extraction to time during this initial phase corresponded to a zero order reaction with a rate constant of around 10 pct/min.

As a result of the new mining law implemented in August 1985 and the programs conducted by the Institute Ecustoriano de Mineria (INEMIN), which was created by this legislation, there was considerably greater activity in the nonfuels mineral sector during 1986. Over the next 2 years, INEMIN will be developing a national mining plan that will guide Ecuadorean mineral development for the balance of this century. As stage one of INEMIN's mineral study, historical records were reviewed and 300 abandoned mines and 1,200 unexplored mineral deposits were available for further investigation. In 1986, INEMIN established 5 branch offices and negotiated 250 new mining contracts with foreign companies valued at $16 million. Despite all this activity, INEMIN officials estimate that 100,000 square kilometers remain available for claim staking. Technical assistance contracts were signed with Belgium, the Federal Republic of Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom, to assist in a variety of assignments ranging from helping prepare the national minion plan to the development of industrial mineral deposits.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research to determine the high temperature oxidation resistance of substitute stainless steels (SS) containing two less strategic elements, Al and Si, instead of Cr. Chromium is considered to be a critical and strategic metal. Although the Cr content was reduced to 8 wt pct, the alloys showed better oxidation resistance than did 304 SS containing 18 wt pct Cr. Specifically, the alloys that contained Fe-8Cr-16Ni with combinations of Al and Si showed excellent oxidation resistance even at temperatures up to 1,000° C. In this study, the effects of the alloying elements on oxidation kinetics and morphology of oxides were investigated using a Cahn Rg electrobalance, scanning electron microscopy, an energy-dispersive X-ray analyzer, X-ray diffraction, and an electron microprobe. Aluminum and silicon additions in combinatin were more effective in providing oxidation resistance than either element was alone.

Develop a safe, efficient filter for removing diesel particulate matter (soot) from the exhaust of underground mining machines equipped with water scrubbers. Approach The Bureau of Mines and the Donaldson Company, Inc., jointly developed a low-cost, disposable, pleated-media filter (PMF) system. The system is intended for use on Part 36 permissible equipment or other machines equipped with water scrubbers. The PMF is installed downstream of the water scrubber to take advantage of the cool exhaust produced by the water bath. This demonstration system was tested on three Jeffrey 4114 Ramcars and a Wagner LST-5 scoop at Utah Fuel Company's Skyline mine near Scofield, Utah. Figure 1 illustrates a clean filter element being inserted into the canister on the Ramcar. How It Works The PMF system consists of a water trap, an optional over-pressure relief valve, filter canister, and PMF Under normal operations exhaust from a vehicle equipped with a water scrubber is heavily laden with water, especially on immediate startup of the engine. The water trap is designed to remove most of the water droplets from the exhaust before they enter the PMF, thus improving PMF performance. The over-pressure valve is designed to limit the exhaust backpressure by venting off some exhaust gas before the: filter. It is attached to the water trap upstream of the PMF. Figure 2 illustrates and shows a break out sectional view of the location of the PMF on the Ramcar.

Determine the extent to which remote-sensing techniques, primarily lineament analysis, can be used to identify geologic structures that may affect the location and migration of subsidence over abandoned underground coal mines in the Colorado Springs, CO, area. Compile data using a geographic information system (GIS) to allow efficient and reproducible comparisons and analyses. Background The basis for evaluating abandoned mine land (AML) sites with remote-sensing techniques comes from past and ongoing Bureau ground control research using remote-sensing data to identify potential hazards caused by geologic structures (faults, joints, etc.) above active underground coal mines. Research showed that lineament (linear feature) analysis of Landsat Multispectral Scanner (MSS) images could indicate locations of fractures and fracture trends that had varying, but significant, impacts on the stability of mine openings. Such geologic structures should be identifiable over abandoned mines as well. If fractures are present, even if they arc not faults, they should represent areas of potential instability over these mines and, therefore, should tend to localize subsidence when it occurs, particularly for deep and moderately deep portions of mines.

A radiotracer technique developed by the Bureau of Mines extends to the parts-per-billion range the sensitivity for determining contributors of deposits formed in stored and thermally stressed jet fuels. The method depends upon measuring radioactivity associated with thermally induced deposits from fuels containing one labeled compound. The technique was applied to 88 test blends, representing 12 fuels and nine carbon-l4 labeled fuel constituents or fuel additives, or both. Data from results of these tests are included in this report. With this radiotracer technique, the contribution of fuel components and additives to thermally induced deposits in a variety of fuel environments was estimated before and after storage.

Significant effects of in-the-mill drying on the pulverization of lignite have been demonstrated in an experimental impact-type pulverizer by tests in which the primary variable was temperature of the sweeping gas. Reduced power requirements and increased product fineness were observed as the extent of drying was increased. Pulverization with in-the-mill drying was studied in comparative tests made on lignites from five mine sources. All of the lignites responded in a similar manner; however, differences in the pulverizing characteristics of the individual lignites were significant. For one lignite, the electrical input to the pulverizer driving motor with minimum sweeping-gas temperature was 33.9 kw.-hr. per ton, decreasing to 14.0 kw.-hr. per ton with a sweeping-gas temperature of 658° F.; for another lignite, at comparable operating conditions, the electrical input decreased from 59.1 to 19.0 kw.-hr. per ton. In the first case, the product fineness increased with increasing temperature of sweeping gas from 65.2 to 79.2 percent through a 200-mesh sieve, and in the second case, from b2.7 to 86.9 percent through a 200-mesh sieve.

Although haulage truck collisions account for only a small percentage of haulage accidents, the likelihood of severe injury, or even death is very high when such a collision does occur. Most rear-end collisions also result in considerable equipment damage, creating a need for expensive repairs. To improve collision protection, some southwestern surface mines have, for several years, been fabricating and using extended bumpers. In cooperation with these mines, the Bureau of Mines has worked to improve this technology by evaluating the structural requiremnts of extended bumpers. How Extended Bumpers Help The Bureau found that when one large rear-dump haulage truck collides with the rear of another an extended bumper protects the driver of the vehicle that is struck by dissipating the impact energy into the rear tires and pushing the whole vehicle forward. An extended bumper also prevents the box on the truck that is hit from penetrating the cab of the other truck-a typical and serious collision hazard. A further advantage derives from the wide design of the extended bumper which helps prevent damage to truck ladders, thereby minimizing any entry or exit problems. Extended bumpers also provide safe work platforms at the front of large haulage vehicles.

Design, fabricate, and test a machine capable of operating in coal seams 48-inches and thicker that can reduce the time, expense, and injury potential inherent in extending and retracting mine-wide section belt conveyors, while eliminating the need to use additional machinery or equipment in accomplishing such moves. The Problem Many underground coal mines use a belt haulage system to move cut coal from the face to the loading area. This system usually consists of a main line belt conveyor fed by section belt conveyors. A shuttle car at the face carries the coal cut by a continuous mining machine to a feeder breaker that breaks the large lumps of coal into smaller, transport-able pieces and unloads them onto the tail piece of the section conveyor. This tail piece is skid-mounted so it can be readily moved as needed. The conveyor is kept close to the face during mining in order to shorten the haul distance of the shuttle cars. Section belts can be lengthened by adding belting, wire rope, and support hard-ware. During pillar retreat mining, these section belts are shortened to keep pace with pillar extraction operations. However, these belt moves, either the extensions or retractions, usually require six to eight workers and three to eight hours to complete. In addition, a 100-foot belt move requires workers to handle up to 4,000 lbs. of material, not including the tail section. Strain and sprain injuries can be incurred during this heavily labor-intensive task. The time required to move the section belt can also create losses in the mine's production. The differences in starch demands that occur between ore types subjected to the anionic flotation of calcium-activated gangue and the range of residual starch contents expected to give the best metallurgical response were evaluated on a batch and pilot plant basis. A phenol-sulfuric acid procedure was used to determine the residual starch contents in the iron ore slurries. Three pilot plant campaigns on samples from a group of orebodies located on the Marquette Range, Michigan, showed that in the rougher flotation pulp, a residual carbohydrate range of 25 to 100 ppm, which is equivalent to a 0.5 lb/short ton spread, yielded optimum results. Concentrates assaying at least 65 percent Fe and less than 6.0 percent Si02 and containing more than 80 per-cent of the recoverable iron were obtained. Both batch and continuous research indicated that starch adsorption is calcium modulated and relatively unaffected by the fatty acid additions employed. Residual starch level is not a critical control factor, but the addition must be adjusted to about 25 to 50 ppm residual starch and kept in this range for most effective utilization of the added tapioca flour.

The Bureau of Mines dried and carbonized two wood wastes, one softwood (redwood) and one hardwood (oak), using continuous, vertical entrainment techniques previously developed for use with coal. It was demonstrated that these techniques are readily applicable to wood waste and that appreciable changes in the yields of carbonization products can be obtained by varying operating conditions. A limited amount of experimental work was done on briquetting the charcoals. Firm briquets were formed with oak charcoal, although greater quantities of starch binder than used commercially for kiln-produced charcoal were required. Redwood charcoal did not briquet successfully under the test conditions employed.

This paper describing the method of mining a deposit of vanadium ore near Rifle, Colo., is one of a series of similar papers on metal-mining methods and costs being issued by the United States Bureau of Mines. This vanadium deposit probably is the largest yet found in North America. It is situated 12 miles northeast of Rifle, Colo. (see fig. 1), on the southern flank of tae White River plateau, and is at an altitude of 6,500 feet. Between 150 and 200 tons of ore are mined daily and trucked to the mill at Rifle. The product of the mill is fined vanadium oxide, which is shipped to the company's plaits at Columbiana, Ohio, and Niagara Falls, N. Y., for the electric manufacture of ferrovanadium. HISTORY The deposit was discovered about 1909 by men prospecting for carnotite. Its outcrop on the bola cliff of Rifle Canon had been known to stockmen for many years.

Increasing use of continuous miners, especially the boring type, has focused attention on the inadequacy of face ventilation in coal mines. The bulk of the machine, the rapid advance of working faces, and the increased liberation of methane from the larger expanse of freshly exposed coal surfaces have created ventilation problems that were unknown with conventional mining equipment. Ignition of gas, especially that caused by machine bits striking hard rock or pyritic inclusions, have increased at an alarming rate. As the mines penetrate beds under thicker cover at an ever-increasing rate of face advance, this problem will probably increase unless face ventilation is improved. A previous survey, described in Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 5414, Auxiliary Ventilation of Continuous Miner Places, disclosed that auxiliary fans with tubing generally improved circulation of air and removal of gas at the face. The study here reported attempts to examine, face ventilation at various mines and to note any plan or innovation of. air coursing that industry might adopt to reduce the danger of gas ignition. "INTRODUCTION This circular contains the story of a stubborn mine fire of electrical origin that started on the main haulage road of No. 59 mine of the Peabody Coal Co. and illustrates that sometimes serious fires can be fought by direct attack. The story also points out that the cost of such procedure can be extremely high, and it is better, therefore, to minimize the possibility of a fire of electrical origin by suitable over-current and line-fault protection. The lives of 163 men were saved by utilizing a recently sunk air shaft near active workings as an escapeway. These men could not have reached the older openings. Also described are the rescue of 75 additional men through another air shaft, sealing of the fire, attempted extin¬guishment with carbon dioxide, and the difficulties of fighting the fire and recovering the mine.A fire occurred shortly before 12 o'clock noon, August 15, 1949, in the No. 59 mine, Peabody Coal Co., Springfield, Ill. All 257 men underground escaped to the surface. One group of 75 men was delayed from escaping for several hours after the alarm was given because smoke and fire gases were circulating in a main return airway, which intervened between their working section and one air shaft, and also in the stairway compartment of the shaft. After being supplied with universal-type gas masks, or self-rescuers, these men were conducted from the mine by members of a State mine-rescue team and other mine employees. Six nine officials were hospitalized because of exposure to carbon monoxide during fire-fighting activities; all were discharged a few days afterward. Later, while doing work incident to fighting the fire, two men were killed, and several were injured by falls of roof and rib.The fire broke out after a collision of a loaded trip with four empty mine cars on the main east haulage entry. The mine cars were jammed against the trolley wire causing a sustained electric arc that ignited the wooden mine cars and the fire spread to the timbers and coal."

Reduce the noise levels to which operators of double-drum longwall shearers are exposed without compromising the operational effectiveness of the shearer. The Problem Noise produced by double-drum longwall shearers can be harmful to machine operators. Typical noise levels at the lead-drum operator position range from 100 to 105 dBA, and Federal noise regulations allow only one to two hours of exposure per shift at these levels. Noise radiated by the shearer cutting drum is the primary contributor to the overall noise level. However, test of a noise-controlled cutting drum developed by the Bureau of Mines reduced the operator noise level to 95 dBA, thereby increasing the allowable operating time to four hours per shift. Approach The key design aspect of the noise-controlled shearer drum is its reduced vibration-al response to coal-cutting forces. Laboratory studies have shown that these forces are concentrated in the low-frequency region (500 Hz and below). The Bureau of Mines investigated the adaptability of the Meteorology Research Inc.2 (MRI) nephelometer and the Sinclair-Phoenix smoke meter for use in routine, analytical, smog-chamber experiments and to compare their responses to aerosol during these experiments. Both instruments' sampling systems were modified--smaller size sample input systems were studied using the nephelometer and a secondary sample system was added to the smoke meter to allow measurement of Aitken or condensate nuclei. Both instruments were easily adapted for use with small smog chambers and both displayed good precision and sensitivity to aerosol. A correlation was shown to exist between the two instruments' responses to aerosol. This correlation makes it possible to report the Sinclair-Phoenix measurements in visibility and/or mass units if desired.

Inhaled particle contact with pulmonary surfactant in the hypophase lining pulmonary alveoli was modeled in vitro by exposing two respirable sized dusts, kaolin and silica quartz, to lecithin, a major component of pulmonary surfactant, emulsified in physiologic saline. Lecithin adsorbs to the dusts upon incubation at 37º C and suppresses their cytotoxicity as measured by pulmonary macrophage and erythrocyte assays, suggesting that pulmonary surfactant provides a defense system against prompt cell membrane lysis by inhaled dusts. Subsequent pulmonary macrophage phagocytosis and lysosomal enzyme digestion of the coated dusts was modeled in vitro by incubation with phospholipase A2 for one hour. With increasing lipase activity, silica hemolytic potential was restored to native silica levels. Kaolin was retoxified to levels far in excess of native kaolin hemolytic potential. Elution, thin layer chromatography and phosphate assay of treated dusts indicate most lecithin on silica is digested to lysolecithin and desorbed, silica retoxification being due to surface and adherent lysolecithin effects. Most lecithin on kaolin is not digested in this same time; that which is results in adherent lysolecithin which is responsible for the kaolin retoxification. Digestion with phospholipases A2 and C together produces only weakly retoxified kaolin. Results suggest that surface adsorption properties which control the adherence of prophylactic surfactant distinguish the pathogenic potentials of quartz, kaolin and mixed dust.

The Bureau of Mines presents a theoretical solution for the stresses and displacements in an infinite elastic plate containing a circular hole whose boundary is subjected to applied shear loads over four separated arcs. The results for the applied shear loads can be superimposed on the results for applied radial loads, given in a previous publication, to obtain a complete two-dimensional approximation of the stresses and displacements induced in the rock by tunnel boring machines anchored in a circular tunnel by means of four props. Analysis of the various solutions shows that the tangential tensile stresses induced on the boundary of the circular tunnel by applied radial loads can be minimized in the roof and floor of the tunnel by the application of appropriate shear loads to each of the four props. Thus when planning tunnel boring operations, consideration should be given to the in situ stress field in the rock and the induced stresses in the rock resulting from the applied radial and shear loads produced by the props of the boring machine.

The Bureau of Mines used sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer gas to evaluate the effectiveness of gob ventilation and/or sealing practices at three coal mines, each having different problems associated with their mined-out areas. The purpose of these ventilation studies was to better understand whether current techniques employed for ventilation or sealing are successful at minimizing the potential for gob fires and explosions. The work performed at each mine is discussed: One is a long-wall operation that uses ventilation to carry off hazardous gases, and two are room-and-pillar operations, each with far different concerns, that seal off the gobs to isolate them from the main mine ventilation. In all cases employment of the Bureau's SF6 tracer gas technique resulted in answers to questions raised by the mine operators concerning the effectiveness of their gob ventilation or sealing practices in preventing mine fires.

Electrophoretic mobility measurements were made by the Bureau of Mines on samples of a Florida phosphate slime to determine the optimum conditions of coagulation and settling in an aluminum sulfate solution. Addition of anthracite to promote mutual coagulation demonstrated the practicability of heterocoagulation by reduction of the repulsive effect of double layers. By proper selection of the electrolyte and its concentration, the reduction of the double layers to a net zero point of charge causes the predominance of Van der Waals' forces of attraction leading to the coagulation and rapid settling of both particle systems, as is predicted by the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory of colloidal stability. Confirmation was found in the microfiltration tests where a modified Carman equation was applied to evaluate the specific filter bed resistance.
