The Federal Bureau of Mines is publishing a series of studies on the methods and costs of mining uranium on the Colorado Plateau. This report describes the longwall-mining methods and techniques used at the Radon mine, Big Indian district, San Juan County, Utah. The tabular Radon ore body lies on the southwest flank of the Lisbon Valley anticline, strikes N. 10° W., dips 7° SW., and has an average thickness of 4-1/2 to 5 ft. The mine is developed by a three-compartment vertical shaft, a haulage level driven beneath the ore, and a system of drifts driven within and parallel to the strike of the ore.

This information circular is one of a series describing mining methods and costs, being published by the Bureau of Mines. The Sunbright mine of the Foote Mineral Co. at Sunbright, Va., is the southernmost underground limestone mine in the State. It is a comparatively recent operation, and a description of its rapid development to production stage may have particular interest for the limestone-mining industry. For the past several years, the Bureau of Mines has been actively engaged in developing two new oxygen self-rescuers through research contracts with private industry. These new oxygen self-rescuers are designed to be carried by a miner while he is at work and are used during emergency escape, supplying high-purity oxygen to the user and, at the same time, absorbing carbon dioxide (C02), The first of the two new self-rescue breathing devices is a 10-minute, self-contained apparatus developed by the Mine Safety Appliance Co, Size and weight of the unit are comparable to the currently used self-rescue devices. The second device, designed and developed by Lockheed Missiles and Space Corp., is 8. 4.5-lb package which supplies 1 hour of oxygen to the miner. Both devices have a canister which contains the oxygen-producing and CO2-absorbing potassium superoxide chemical, a breathing bag, a bite-type mouthpiece, noseclip, goggles, and hoses connecting the canister and mouthpiece. When needed in an emergency, the miner removes the outer protective cover and dons the unit. For both devices oxygen is immediately available once the mouthpiece is placed in the mouth. These two new units have received prototype approval from the National Institute for Occupation and Safety Health (NIOSH) and the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA).

Previous Bureau of Mines studies of vibrations from quarry blasts have shown that the square root of the charge-weight may be used to group particle velocity data from various charge sizes, and that empirical propagation equations may be used to estimate vibration amplitudes. Particle accelerations of the sandstone roof of the White Pine Copper mine, Michigan, were measured to determine whether similar propagation equations may be developed for underground mine blasts. Vibration data from White Pine blasts were best grouped by scaling with the square root of the charge weight. Cube root scaling did not effectively group the data. The empirical propagation equation AW1/2 = 50,000 (R/W1/2)-2.21 where A is peak-to-peak acceleration in g's, W is the zero-delay charge-weight in pounds, and R is the distance from the blast in feet, may be used to estimate maximum vibration amplitudes from production sized blasts. Vibration differences among headings and types of explosive charge (AN-FO and dynamite), while statistically significant, were not a major factor in the estimation of maximum vibration amplitudes with an empirical propagation equation. Vibration differences between types of explosive charge were larger than the differences among headings, indicating that some reduction of vibration amplitude might be gained by using AN-FO rather than dynamite. Acceleration records from both White Pine's AN-FO and dynamite production blasts show that high intensity vibrations from the delayed portions of the blast (each delay interval = 25 milliseconds) were separate events, and that the zero-delay portion of the blast produced the maximum vibration amplitudes. If the pull of the underground blast round can be maintained, a reduction of the zero-delay charge-weight may effectively reduce the maximum vibration amplitude of the blast.

Because surface mining removes the original plant cover from the land and exposes the soil, special care is needed. Until the mined land is stabilized by revegetation, snowmelt and rainfall can pick up sediment and erode mined lands much faster than undisturbed areas. Sediment control is an important aspect of protecting the environment during mining and reclamation because without it, large amounts of sediment can clog streams, increase the risk of flooding, damage irrigation systems, harm aquatic habitat, and limit the use of water for other purposes. Stream quality can be affected many miles downstream from the mine. Before SMCRA was implemented many streams were degraded by uncontrolled sediment from mining. Sediment is controlled through careful planning and a design that incorporates a variety of measures that work together to reduce soil erosion at the mine. Disturbed areas are graded, and some areas terraced, to achieve stable slopes, reduce runoff water velocity, increase infiltration, and divert runoff into drainage channels so that it flows away from unvegetated, erodible areas. Grading along the slope contour and scarify in gun vegetated slopes with bulldozer track marks help prevent erosion by slowing down the flow of water. Runoff from haul roads is controlled by culverts and roadside ditches. Sedimentation ponds or other forms of sediment control are required at all mines to minimize the amount of sediment leaving the site.

Exhaust emissions were measured from 25 aircraft turbine engines using Jet A fuel. Analytical apparatus, procedures, and results are described. Carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, and aldehydes were measured at engine operating modes representing power levels used in airline operation. Carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon, and aldehyde emissions were highest at idle and lowest at takeoff; oxides of nitrogen were lowest at idle and highest at takeoff. Of the total oxides of nitrogen emitted, nitrogen dioxide constituted from 10 to 100 pct, depending on the exhaust gas temperature. Engines retrofitted with smoke-reducing burner cans produced less carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon, and aldehyde emissions, and slightly more oxides of nitrogen then engines with standard burner cans.

The major developments of the world's Mineral economy in 1955 were the continued rise in production and consumption of practically all major minerals. the sharp increase in output of the fertilizer minerals in response to demands for greater food output, the cutback, in new investment for steel capacity in Europe and Japan, Europe's continuing decline as a producer of primary minerals, and the emergence of nuclear power as an economically competitive factor in the energy economies of the United States and Western Europe. In resource development, discovery of new natural gas deposits in the North Sea and the continued development of Australia's bauxite and iron ore resources, making this country a major source for these commodities, were significant.

This report is the 17th of a series originally issued annually, and more recently bienially, to acquaint the reader with the work of the Division of Explosives Technology, Federal Bureau of Mines. It differs from preceding reports in that its material is presented in two parts: Part I reviews briefly the overall activities of the Division during fiscal years 1955 and 1956;4/ part II presents in abstract form, the publications of the Division during that period. As it is not unusual for research completed in the course of one report period to be published only in the following period, the Bureau believes that the present approach will give a more accurate presentation of its work for the period considered. The Bureau of Mines undertook this investigation to study methods of utilizing red mud residues from production of alumina from bauxite. Pilot-plant tests were conducted using Jamaican and Surinam red muds. Both the carbon-lime-soda sinter process and electric-arc smelting with coke and limestone were employed to recover iron and alumina. Alumina recoveries of 85 to 90 percent were obtained by the sinter process; although iron recovery was about 80 percent, the magnetic product was finely divided and difficult to separate from the gangue. Smelting red muds in the electric-arc furnace produced a pig iron with 98-percent recovery of iron; up to 84 percent of the A1203 was recovered by leaching the calcium aluminate slag with Na2C03 solution. A titania product assaying 96 percent TiO2 was recovered from the nonmagnetic portion of Surinam red mud sinter by extraction with H2SO4. Leached calcium aluminate slags and brown mud (from the combination Bayer process) are possible raw materials in the manufacture of portland cement.

This preliminary paper is intended to answer briefly some of the inquiries coning to the Bureau of Mines regarding the so-called "paraffining", of oil wells and methods of preventing and remedying that trouble. The increased difficulties in operation and the losses of production caused by the deposition of gummy and waxy hydrocarbons, commonly called paraffin, in the wells, tubing, other pumping equipment, and in the pores of the productive sands, have long been recognized but the trouble has not been overcome. The nature and causes of the trouble, together with some of the possible methods by which it may be diminished or overcome, are outlined below. Character of the Peraffining Materials. The so-called paraffin that collects in oil wells end in the pores of the oil-producing sands immediately around the wells, is generally made up of amorphous wax or uncracked paraffin, asphalt, or other gummy hydrocarbons mixed with more or lees water, oil, and inorganic silt. Some of the samples of this "paraffin" collected from oil wells in different fields and examined by the Bureau of Mines contain as mach as 20 per cent by weight of water and inorganic silt, whereas other samples are composed entirely of waxy hydrocarbons and oil. The inorganic silt accompanying this "paraffin" is mostly fine sand, clayey materials, common salt and finely disseminated precipitates of calcium and magnesium carbonates. Sulphates of calcium, barium, and strontium are less common constituents of the "paraffin."

This report describes a study that examined load transfer mechanics in longwall shield supports as part of the Bureau of Mines research program to optimize support design and utilization. The objectives of this study were to determine the contribution of the leg cylinders and the caving shield-lemniscate assembly towards full shield vertical and hor-izontal load resistance capability and to determine how the interaction of these members affect overall shield response. Load-displacement characteristics of the leg cylinders and the caving shield-lemniscate assembly, independent of the full shield, were evaluated from controlled displacement tests in the Bureau's mine roof simulator and responses were compared with full shield responses to identify load transfer mechanics. It is concluded from this research that the participation of the caving shield-lemniscate assembly significantly affects the response of the shield support. It is likely that the caving shield-lemniscate assembly is not participating fully in current shield designs because of translational freedom in the numerous pin joints. It is also concluded that the shield will respond differently to different boundary condi-tions resulting from interaction with the strata. This report describes load transfer mechanics of shield supports and the implication of these research findings on shield design and utilization.

The Bureau of Mines studied lignite pulverization in a laboratory ring-roller mill. Both moisture content and the source of lignite were found to be important factors in pulverizer operation. Reduction of moisture content increased capacity and reduced power consumption, but predrying is more effective than in-the-mill drying in improving pulverizer operation. A combination predrier-crusher system produced significant improvements but other efforts to improve in-the-mill drying in the test mill were unsuccessful. Pulverization of frozen lignite was found to seriously reduce pulverizer capacity and increase power requirements.

This paper describes a focus of work presently being conducted at the Rock Mechanics Research Group at the University of British Columbia. The underhand method under consolidated fill ensures a high recovery under an engineered back that is comprised of cemented rock fill and/or cemented paste fill. This method of mining has been employed successfully in mines throughout North America as a method of mitigating exposure to the operator having to work under a seismically active ?back?. This paper reviews design methodology in the placement and analysis of sill mats with reference to site observation coupled with on going numerical and analytically derived solutions.

The continued worldwide shortage and strategic value of nickel place great importance upon the continued development and exploitation of new sources of nickel in the United States, The deposits of nickel-bearing minerals in Oregon and Washington have attracted considerable attention, particularly since the Hanna Development Co. has engaged in development work aimed at producing ferronickel from the Nickel Mountain deposit, near Riddle, Douglas County, Greg. The Red Flats nickel deposit in Curry County, Oreg., was first examined by the Bureau of Mines in dune 1945, but it was not until 1952 that the deposit was drilled and sampled. In 1953, a 15-ton sample of Red Flats material was procured and subjected to continuous smelting tests in the Bureau's Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory, Albany, Greg.

Selenium was discovered in 1817 by the Swedish chemist, Berzelius, while studying flue dust from the lead chambers of the sulfuric acid works at Gripsholm, Sweden.

The Bureau of Mines recorded both particle accelerations and velocities from one-stick and production blasts at Eagle-Picher Industries' Shullsburg mine, Shullsburg, Wis., to test the effectiveness of square root scaling in grouping underground blast vibrations and to determine the effects of rock type and mine geometry on blast vibrations. Although the charge weights of subsequent delay periods sometimes exceeded the charge weight of the zero-delay period, both acceleration and velocity records showed that the zero-delay portion of the Shullsburg production blasts produced the highest vibration amplitudes. Because of the restricted range of charge weights in the Shullsburg experiments, no statistical determination of an appropriate scaling factor could be made. However, the square root scaled peak particle velocity data from the Shullsburg production blasts grouped well within the approximate band-width of vibration data obtained by the Bureau from quarry blasts in many different rock types. This indicates that scaling by some factor, perhaps the square root or cube root of the charge weight, may be an effective way to group and study vibration data from underground blasts. Further research is needed to determine which scaling factor is best for underground blasting.

This paper describing the mining methods employed by the Federal Mining and Smelting Co., operating the Morning mine at Mullan, Idaho, is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The daily tonnage produced at the Morning mine, including that mined by leasers, is 1,100 tons. Mine run of ore will average 9.1 per cent lead, 5.8 per cent zinc, and 4.4 ounces silver per ton. A stull set and fill method of mining is employed.

The practicability and dependability of two permissible methane-indicat- in detectors recently developed were proved conclusively by extensive tests in the return airways of all mines operating in the anthracite region in most of which samples and readings were taken with one or the other of the two in- dicating detectors. These detectors roved dependable and accurate within practical limits, and their general use should be encouraged as an aid to bet ter ventilation, more accurate control of air currents, and greater safety in mines.

This project was designed to explore the suitability of using fluorinated inorganic materials as solvents for the in situ mining of thin seamed, heavily overburdened coal; to build a data base for the selection of an inorganic solvent for use for coal cleaning; to determine if fluorinated solvents will reduce the organic and inorganic sulfur contents of the coal, as well as to lower the ash content. The coal samples have been combined with pure solvent, as well as with aqueous solutions at atmospheric pressure and at increased pressure. The increased pressure experiments are important since they duplicate the conditions anticipated for an in situ cleaning and mining operation. Trifluoroacetic, difluorphosphoric (phosphorodifluoroidic), and trifluoromethanesulfonic acids have been found to be effective for the cleaning of high sulfur, high ash coal at 300°C and at atmospheric pressure. At pressures up to 20,000 psi the effectiveness of these reagents is not decreased.
