The New Idria Mining and Chemical Co. owns and operates the New Idria mine in southern San Benito County, Calif. During 1957-59, the New Idria mine was the largest producer of mercury in the United States and its alltime production of over a half-million flasks was exceeded only by one mine. It is one of the oldest and most consistent producers in California. With the exception of 1921-22, the mine has an annual production of mercury dating back to 1854. This paper by the Federal Bureau of Mines describes the exploration, development, mining, and furnacing of mercury ore at the New Idria mine. Figure 1 is a view of the furnace plant of the New Idria mine. The purpose of this report is to promote the development and conservation of our mineral resources by dissemination of technological information on mining and processing procedures, and related practices at operating mines.

Accelerometers and pressure transducers, mounted in suspension components, can be used to monitor the ride of haulage trucks. Presently, it is difficult to tell what caused a jolt to the truck using either pressure or acceleration data alone. When information from a global positioning system (GPS) is recorded at the same time as shock pressures or acceleration data, the exact location of an event can be determined. Mine management can then determine what caused the jolt to the truck. This research is part of a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) project called "Engineering controls for reduction of jolting/jarring injuries in surface mines." NIOSH is investigating how the work environment of haulage truck drivers can be improved. The US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) notes that, between 1986 and 1995, 60% of the back injuries were to haulage truck drivers in metal/nonmetal surface mining. Personnel from Phelps Dodge suggested that combining acceleration data with information obtained from a GPS could generate results with a variety of uses. Therefore, researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory (SRL) began investigating how to tie acceleration and GPS data together. It was originally thought that this tool would be used primarily for road and truck maintenance. However, as research progressed, it became apparent that it would also be useful in providing feedback about equipment operations and identifying unusual causes of jolting. Experimental approach Available components that function well by themselves were linked for the purpose of proof of concept. Using a Modular Mining Systems (MMS) product called Vital Signs, SRL researchers took an Aero-Marine Products (AMP) acceleration recorder and hardwired it to MMS Dispatch equipment already installed on a truck. AMP is one of several manufacturers of acceleration recorders frequently used to monitor freight during shipping. MMS Dispatch is used for production accounting and truck dispatching and uses GPS tracking. Through Vital Signs, an analog or digital alarm signal can be recorded. Steve Rhoades, of MMS, wrote unique code that links the Vitals Signs data and GPS location and stores this data in an ASCII log file. SRL researchers installed the equipment in a Caterpillar 793 haul truck. The result was a working prototype. Figures 1 and 2 show the instrument installation in the truck. This Bureau of Mines publication is a literature study of the problem of spontaneous oxidation and combustion of sulfides in underground mines. It summarizes the present-day hazards, process mechanisms, and prevention and control techniques of this growing problem in underground mines. The iron sulfides generally have the greatest tendency to oxidize, particularly pyrrhotite. The presence of moisture and oxygen is essential for the oxidation reaction. Highly fractured sulfides, when found with timber or combustible refuse in slowly circulating air, pose the most serious fire hazard. Quenching with water is effective in quickly dealing with local hot spots, but ventilation at high flaw rates is the most effective and economical means for long-term prevention and control.

"The few previous observations of the effect of turbulence on limits of inflammability have been made on a small scale in turbulence produced either by a fan or by movement of the mixture.By a suitable amount of turbulence from a fan the lower limit of methane was 5 per cent as compared with 5 per cent observed for quiescent mixtures in the same vessel.3 With a streaming movement of the gas mixture within the range of speed from 35 to 65 centimeters per second (69 to 128 feet a minute) the lower limit was approximately 5 percent,4 For a quiescent mixture of ethane the lower limit was 3.10 per cent ethane, but with fan running at a moderate speed a 3 per cent mixture exploded.5The object of the tests herein reported was (1) to determine the lower limit of natural gas in a mixture of natural gas and air Which would be ignited and propagate violently when the turbulence was produced by explosives fired from a cannon into the mixture; (2) to observe the behavior when the mixture contained less than this low limit; and (3) to determine how turbulence produced by a fan affects thin limit.Four series of tests were run, three of which were to determine the effect of different sources of ignition: Tests with (1) an electric igniter; (2) 3F black blasting powder stemmed with 2 pounds of dry fire clay stemming used to ignite the mixture, and (3) 40 per cent straight nitroglycerin dynamite unstemmed. The fourth was made to study the effect of turbulence produced by a two-speed electric fan, using an electric igniter as the source of ignition.In both series of tests with explosives, charges of 50 and 200 were used to determine the effect of increased quantity of explosives on the lower limit of natural gas."

In a Bureau of Mines supply evaluation, the known uranium resources in the United States are estimated to have a total recoverable uranium oxide (U3O8) content of 3,132,400 tons at prices up to $69.32 per pound. Only those resources were evaluated for which sufficient quantity data are available and process technology exists for recovering uranium. A total of 160,800 tons of U3O8 is available at $8 per pound from ore deposits presently mined and an additional 244,700 tons available at prices up to $30 per pound from similar but usually lower grade deposits. A total of 2,726,900 tons of U3O8 is available from four other resources: copper leach solutions, wet-process phosphoric acid, Florida phosphate rock Leached zone, and Chattanooga Shale. These resources contain from 30,000 tons of recoverable U30, at a price of $7.52 per pound as a byproduct of copper leach solutions to 2,557,300 tons at a price of $69.32 per pound from Chattanooga Shale.

This report describes the loading and transportation practices employed at the zinc-lead mines of The Eagle-Picher Co., Jo Daviess County, Ill., and Lafayette County, Wis. The report also gives a brief history of the Illinois-Wisconsin zinc-lead district and the operations of the company in the area. The diesel-powered, rubber-tired loading and haulage equipment is described and illustrated from the operational point of view only, and an analysis is made of the materials-handling system without going into health and safety factors. The costs per ton of the various components of mechanical loading, underground haulage, underground crushing, and hoisting for fiscal year 1960 are tabulated.

The present paper gives more on analyses of the gases leaving the top of the charge and on accretions formed on the walls of the blast furnace. New data are presented to show the effect of the temperatures at the tuyere zone on the lead content of the slags made. The greater part of this paper, however, deals with a much debated subject, namely air used in lead blast furnaces. Original data are presented to show the effects on smelting lead 'products when air is supplied to a lead blast furnace under volume versus under pressure control.

Legislation and Government Programs.-The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) accepted written comments until July 23, 1976, and held an informal hearing on August 24, 1976, to receive oral testimony regarding an economic and inflation impact statement prepared by OSHA on the proposed standard for occupational exposure to inorganic arsenic. These written and oral submissions were to be used in conjunction with information supplied at 1975 hearings to promulgate emission standards. An in-depth study for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) assembled and interpreted comprehensive information on arsenic and its compounds and the effects of these substances on people, animals, and plants.2 Another study for EPA assessed the role of arsenic and its compounds in the environment and in the economy of the United States and evaluated the need for and the projected effect of controlling its production, use, dissipation, and emission.3

One area of study in the Coal Mine Injury Analysis project was to illustrate and enhance the ability of mine safety management personnel to apply analytical techniques to injury experience data and to justify requests for funds for safety enhancement actions on a cost/benefit and other quantitative basis. Four volumes of this final project report detail (1) the objective and scope of the mine safety management research, (2) the results of literature review, and case studies, and (3) models developed for mine safety management. The four volumes are titled as Volume III: Mine Safety Management, Volume IV: Analytical Techniques for Mine Safety Management; Volume V: Mine Safety Management Case Studies and Volume IX: Training Cost Model. In this volume, the following material is presented: (i) review of related literature, (ii) mathematical models to perform quantitative analyses of accident/ injury experience data using the tools and techniques of risk analysis, time series analysis, and the Markov process, and (iii) descriptions of the HDBSEL and ACIM programs which are used to perform accident/injury experience analyses and cost analyses, respectively.

The objective of this investigation was to obtain data on friction-head losses of sand slurries during their transport in pipelines. The data ultimately will be used in designing hydraulic transport systems. Information that was incidental to the primary objective was gathered on degradation, changed percolation characteristics, and critical velocities of the slurries~ Tests were made in a closed-circuit pilot plant, with one type of tailing, through horizontal 2-, 3-, and 4-inch-pipe test sections at various pulp densities and flow velocities. Approximately 2,000 tests were run in the pilot plant. The ranges of flow velocities used in the experiment were 2.8 to 19 f.p.s. in the 2-inch line, 4 to 14.5 f.p.s. in the 3-inch line, and 4 to 11 f.p.s. in the 4-inch line. Velocities were varied in increments of 0.5 f.p.s. through the entire velocity range in each pipe size. Densities were varied in 3-percent increments from 40 to 70 percent solids by weight except for one series of tests in the 2-inch line; in this series, densities were varied in 5-percent increments from 5 to 65 percent solids by weight.

Reconnaisance samples of reported beryllium occurrences in Idaho, Washington, Montana, and Oregon were chemically and spectroscopically tested in a mobile laboratory. The two predominant types of occurrences were green beryl associated with Cretaceous intrusions and disseminated aquamarine associated with Tertiary intrusions. Although the beryllium content of known deposits in the Northwest is too low for economic development at present, total submarginal-grade beryllium resources in pegmatites are estimated to be 570,000 to 1,870,000 tons containing 0.024 to 0.167 BeO. A potential source of 500,000 to 700,000 tons of beryllium-bearing tactite in Idaho and Montana averages 0.033 to 0.080 percent BeO.

The aerospace and automotive industries are facing a significant risk for cumulative trauma disorders from high-repetition, long-duration tasks. Additional risk factors such as shocks, vibrations and sustained uncomfortable postures oftentimes contribute to musculoskeletal, neurological injuries associated with the hand-arm system. The power tools used for the operation reduce the comfort and working efficiency of the operators, thus lowering their health and safety and the quality of operation. This paper investigates the fastening operation on the assembly line of a major aerospace company for quantifying hand-arm vibrations with the objective of developing a dynamic model of the hand-arm system. The model will be used to ascertain the effect of the various risk factors on the quality of the operation. Experiment Setup A system of three tri-axial accelerometers is used to collect vibrations entering the hand-arm system and their positioning follows the ISO-5349 standard. Reaction force during the operation is measured using a force sensor. The posture of the hand-arm system is measured using two goniometers and one torsiometer. The pilot study conducted has two subjects and one pistol-grip power tool. The experiment setup and positions of various sensors is depicted in Figure 1. [ ] Analysis Method The analysis consists of transmissibility of vibrations and frequency weighted acceleration based on the recommendations of the ISO-5349 standard [1,2]. This report is the 26th in a series summarizing Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal and related investigations and the 8th of these reports to be issued on a calendar-year basis.1 It reviews briefly work in progress during 1961, and it provides references to publications by Bureau personnel during 1961 and also to a few older papers that were not cited in prior reports of this series. Details about some of the researches mentioned may be obtained by referring to the publications cited in the footnotes or in the further list in the Bibliography; other phases of work are reported here for the first time and will be covered in more detail by later publications.

Analysis of seed numbers present in topsoils (a grazed area, an ungrazed area, and two stockpiles) indicated that seeds of the most prevalent colonizers (e.g., Kochia scoparla, Setaria virdis, and Salsolo collins) were not present in the topsoil upon respreading but rather appeared by immigration from the surrounding areas. The grazed site had a seed density of over 7,700 seeds m-2 (of which 43% were from weedy species) and the ungrazed site had 3,900 seeds m-2 (of which 7% were weeds); the stockpiled topsoils had very low seed densities (255 and 520 seeds m-2). Seed densities and diversity decreased with depth on both the grazed and ungrazed sites; this was especially true on the grazed site where 94% of the seeds were found in the surface 7.5 cm. Several species were present in the seed bank (e.g., Hedeoma hispida, Artemesia ludoviciana, A. frigida, and A, abslnthlum) which were also found on the three and four year old mined sites in the aboveground vegetation survey. Seeds from these species may germinate after several years of dormancy, thereby starting populations on mined sites and enhancing plant diversity. Seed bank analysis was also undertaken on mined sites ranging in age of 2 to 6 years (plus an unmined site). Mined site seed densities ranged from 1630 to 3980 seeds m-2, with the four year old site having the greatest density (largely because of high Melilotus spp. populations); unmined site and stockpiled topsoil sample had lower seed densities. A significant positive correlation between total viable seed content and soil-water saturation percentage indicated that soil texture may influence seed viability/ dormancy (the. finer the material, the higher the seed population). As with the previous part of this study (and other studies), there was a poor correlation between the aboveground flora and the belowground seed composition.

Mineral production in Fiji, a group of 322 volcanic islands and atolls of Melanesia in the southern Pacific Ocean, continued to be dominated by gold. However, the Fijian mineral sector remained a minor factor as a source of export earnings, Government revenues, and employment, generating only 1% of the gross domestic product (GDP), estimated as $1.2 billion.2 The largest and most important mining operation was the Vatukoula gold mine on the north side of Viti Levu, the main island. The Vatukoula Mine has been in prduction since 1932, producing about 3.8 million troy ounces of gold and 1.3 million troy ounces of silver to date. In April 1983, the large Australian mining firm, Western Mining Corp. (WMC), assumed operation of the mine in a joint venture with Emperor Gold Mining Co. Ltd., which operated the mine previously. The WMC takeover of the mine management was expected to bring in additional capital and technological expertise in order to modernize operations, increasing both efficiency and output. During the year, rate of recovery was only about 75% of the gold contained in the ore and only 40% of the contained silver. Mining at the Vatukoula Mine was done using bath opencut and underground methods, with about 60% of the ore mined attributed to the underground operations.

The development and use of minerals and mineral fuels are essential to national security and to the maintenance of an expanding economy. As a Nation, we often met these needs but failed to recognize and assess the impact that mining and mineral processing activities have on other natural resources. Currently, the growing demand for energy and minerals is accompanied by an increasing awareness that the provision of these resources must not conflict with society's demand for a clean and habit-able environment. Although present mining and mineral processing activities incorporate, or have under development, technology capable of minimizing environ-mental impacts on land, air, and water, many older operations, particularly in the first half of this century, lacked the technological, social, and environmental insights that exist today. Consequently, a substantial backlog of damaging and potentially damaging conditions remains from such problems as mine subsidence, acid water generation, burning and nonburning waste banks, abandoned surface-mined lands, abandoned underground mine fires, and abandoned mine shafts and oil and gas wells.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has prepared this report on strategies for maintaining high job attendance among underground coal miners because high absenteeism is a threat to miners safety and seriously hampers productivity. A substantial number of research studies on the effectiveness of various strategies for reducing absenteeism among the employees of nonmining industries have been reported in the literature. These strategies have aimed at improving job attendance through one or more of the following: (1) improving employment procedures, (2) overcoming problems that adversely affect one's ability to attend work, and (3) increasing miners motivation to attend work. Many of these strategies appear applicable to the mining industry, and are reviewed in the first half of this report. The second half of this report describes how one could develop and implement a program for maintaining high attendance at underground coal mines. The steps include: measuring and evaluating attendance levels; formulating attendance goals and an absenteeism policy; developing and implementing an attendance promotion program; and periodically going through the preceding steps known as recycling.
