During the summer of 1946, the Division of Geophysical Exploration of the U.S. Bureau of Mines established several primary magnetic base stations near important iron-producing districts in Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin. Stations were located in groups of four to six in six separate base-station areas, and each position was marked with a concrete monument. Differences in magnetic intensity between stations in these areas, as well as the difference between each area and a magnetic datum at the magnetic observatory of the Coast and Geologic Survey at Cheltenham, Md., were measured with a modified Askania magnetometer. Measurements also were made with a Hotchkiss superdip to study the usefulness of the stations for the calibration of instruments of this type. The work was planned and supervised by F. W. Lee, chief of the Division of Geophysical Exploration, and Edward F. Fitzhugh, Jr., chief of the Minneapolis Division of the Bureau of Mines. Special mention is due Harold B. Ewoldt, Bureau of Mines engineer, for his assistance in the field work, especially in locating and establishing monuments. Special mention also is due Clyde L. Holmberg, of the Bureau of Mines, for the magnetic measurements made with the Hotchkiss superdip. Helpful suggestions were received in the field from H. L. James, of the U. S. Geological Survey. Acknowledgment is made of the cooperation of Stephen Royce, Irving E. Beckwith, Arthur Johnson, and Josiah Royce of Pickands, Mather & Co., and A. E. Matson, of Butler Bros. The U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey furnished daily magnetograms from the Cheltenham Magnetic Observatory as well as calibration equipment and values of absolute magnetic intensity. Scheelite, the most abundant tungsten mineral in the Philipsburg region of Montana, is found in replacement deposits and along fissures and cracks in limestone at various distances from contacts with acidic igneous rocks. It also occurs at the limestone-igneous contacts, but typical garnet tactites are developed in only a few places in the region. The most favorable host rocks for scheelite mineralization are the Jefferson, Hasmark, and Madison limestones. Scheelite is exposed in float, outcrops, and surface and mine workings along a 2-mile-wide belt extending southwest from Lost Creek beyond Silver Lake, a distance of 15 miles or more. (See fig. 1.) Some scheelite is found in veins formerly mined for silver. Powellite and molybdenite occasionally are present with the scheelite. Hubnerite occurs in quartz veins in the Black Pine area 10 miles northwest of Philipsburg. These quartz veins occur in the quartzites of the Precambrian Spokane formation. Tungsten production in the region has come almost exclusively from scheelite deposits, both lode and placer. During a 6-year period beginning in 1943 a total of 142.0 tons of 63-percent W03 concentrate was produced by H & H Mines Co. In the early 1950's, the Trigger mine produced 4,000 tons of 1-percent W03 ore and the Tip Top 650 tons of 2.0-percent W03 ore and 2,906 tons of 2.2-percent ore. There has been sporadic production from some of the smaller properties in the area.

Much of the material is reprinted on the following pages in its original form, and changes have been made only where manifestly neces- St,ry. Laboratory methods have been brought up to date. Some types of apparatus described in Bulletin 42 have now become obsolete and newer designs are described instead. The authors hope that this bulletin will be of as much service as was Bulletin 42.

The heat capacities of four crystalline silicates of barium ( BaSiO3 , BaSiO4 , Ba Si¸0 , and BaSi₂0 ) and two crystalline silicates of strontium (SrSio and Sr₂Sio ) were measured over the temperature range from 51 ° to 298° K. The results were used to evaluate the entropies at 298.15 ° K. The entropy values were joined with known heats of formation to obtain the free energies of formation of the silicates with respect to their constituent oxides at 298.15 ° K.

"FOREWORD (By O. P. Hood, Chief mechanical engineer).During the war certain suggestions concerning power production were made by Mr. Walter E. Trent to the War Inventions Board, and at the request of the War Department facilities for experimental work were provided on the grounds of the. Bureau of Standards.The experiments were along the line of controlling the conditions of combustion in a closed space. In order to reduce slag troubles, experiments were carried out for removing ash from powdered coal. After the war, work along this line was continued, resulting in the Trent Process, which agitates or beats together powdered coal, water and oil.A new technology had previously been given to ore preparation by the use of small quantities of oil in water with froth flotation, and although the methods, results and mixtures of the Trent Process were quite different, yet the same physical phenomena of differential wetting used, and the possibility of there being interesting results in fuel technologic was evident. A cooperative agreement was entered into, whereby the Bureau of Mines was to investigate the underlying physical and chemical facts and make them public, and the Trent Corporation was to pay the cost of the investigation.The several reports as made have been available to any one interested, and are now to be published. While the Bureau of Mines felt justified in investigating the physical phenomena so far as might be done in a laboratory, and so far as public interest might reach, no attempt was made to discover the commercial possibilities which development might bring. The question of commercial possibilities must be left for commercial enterprise to answer."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has established a wire rope research laboratory to examine the factors that affect the life of wire rope. A 2-in-diameter 6x25 fiber core rope was degraded on a bending fatigue machine. This was the first in a series of tests on rope of this construction and size. Baseline testing at the laboratory was reported in an earlier publication. Tensile and nondestructive tests were performed on samples of the rope to determine the relationship between rope deterioration and rope breaking strength. The tests indicated that as a wire rope nears the end of its useful life, deterioration and the consequent loss of rope strength increase at an accelerated rate.

The Bureau of Mines used a diphenyl ether calorimeter to determine the heat contents of natural and synthetic blast-furnace slags. For solid slags, enthalpy (HT-H298) at 1,448° to 1,680° K ranged from 282.1 to 348.5 cal/g (±3 percent); liquid slag values were 400.1 to 514 cal/g (±3 percent) in the temperature range between 1,626° and 1,890° K. Experimental results for liquid slags were 14.3 to 16.2 percent higher than the enthalpies calculated from thermodynamic tables; values for solid slags ranged from 5.3 percent lower to 3.9 percent higher than calculated values. Experimental results for liquid synthetic slags ranged from 14.9 to 24.3 percent higher than the calculated enthalpies; values for solid synthetic slags were from 1.0 to 3.4 percent higher.

During reconnaissance investigations of more than 300 stream areas in Idaho to determine the potential value of ilmenite in black - sand placer deposits 46 deposits were explored by churn drilling , trenching , test pitting , or shafting . The component mineral content and total black - sand content were determined for more than 8,690 reconnaissance and exploration samples . Data compiled during the investigation indicate a good potential for large , low- grade deposits containing ilmenite , monazite , columbite , euxenite , uranothorite , and other radioactive black minerals and accessory black - sand minerals . The data also indicate most deposits will be economic only if several component minerals can be recovered as coproducts .

The Tri-State, or Joplin, zinc and lead mining district in south- western Missouri and adjoining, parts of Kansas and Oklahoma is one of the great mining districts of the world. It is in flat-lying or gently rolling agricultural country near industrial centers and coal, oil, and gas fields. The nearly horizontally, lying bedded rocks in which the ore bodies are found were originally limestone but are now largely chert containing minor percent- ages of dolomite and other minerals. The ore occurs in nearly vertical fis- sure zones, large and small, and in blanket (sheet-ground) deposits. The mining depth ranges from surface diggings to $50 feet. The average tenor of the ore mined, in recent years is much lower than that of ore produced in other large zinc and lead districts of the United States. Mining and mill- ing costs are low because of the shallowness of mining, amenability of ores to concentration, efficiency resulting from long experience of management and labor, and other factors. The operators comprise many small and medium-size producing companies and partnerships, as well as individuals and a few larger producers. About 7,000 men are employed in the mines and mills during normal industrial activity. The concentrates produced are sold f.o.b. the mill bins to local representatives of smelting companies at prices quoted on the Joplin market. The productive life of the district began with the discovery of lead near Joplin in 1848, but output was not large until after mining for zinc began near Granby in 1871. In most of the intervening years through 1945 the district produced more zinc than any other field, and it generally ranked third or fourth in the United States in lead production. Figures compiled from sources given later in this paper show a total output for the district from the beginning through 1945 of 20,755,020 tons of zinc concentrates and 3,334,057 tons of lead concentrates valued altogether at $1,110,058,581 in the mill bins. The output, in terms of recoverable metals, was 10,609,408 tons of zinc and 2,529,121 tons of lead, valued in all, at the average yearly market prices of the metals, at $1,691,282,419. During the 39 years (1907-1945) for which complete figures are available, the annual output of the district fluctuated from 23 to 66 percent of the total United States mine output of zinc and from 5 to 18 percent of the total lead; the averages for the period were 40 percent for zinc and 11 percent for lead. peak yearly production was attained in 1926, with an output of 423,800 tons of recoverable zinc and 102;117 tons of lead. Since that yoar the production rate has trended downward, accentuated at first by the depression in the thirties and later ameliorated somewhat under the stimulus of heavy demand and higher metal prices during World War II; the output in 1945 was 139,274 tons of recovorablo zinc and 23,556 tons of load. The above figures show the groat contribution made by the Tri-State district in the past toward the country's supplies of primary zinc and lead, cspecially zinc. However, the district's production is expected to decline both in quantity and in proportion of total United States mine output unless important discoveries are made. "IntroductionThe purpose of this investigation was to study the characteristics of the high-acid electrolytic manganese cell with the idea of fitting it into one of the flow sheets being worked out by the Metallurgical Division of the Bureau of Mines for the recovery of manganese from low-grade domestic ores.In construction, the high-acid cell 3/ differs from the low-acid type in that the cathode and anode compartments are separated by a diaphragm of relatively low porosity, such as alundum. This is necessary because in the high-acid cell the two electrolytes are circulated separately. The anolyte is 15 to 30 percent H2SO4. The catholyte consists of a solution of ammonium sulfate and manganese sulfate with a OH of 4 to 3. The only mixing of electrolytes is that resulting from flow through the diaphragms. In the low-acid cell the two electrolytes are not circulated separately and do not differ so widely in hydrogen-ion concentration. Hence, the canvas diaphragm is sufficient.During operation of the cell, manganese is deposited on the cathode, and sulfuric acid is produced in the anode compartments. Various other reactions take place in the cell. There is considerable decomposition of water; hydrogen is evolved at the cathode, and oxygen is liberated at the anode. When lead anodes are used, some hydrated oxides of manganese are formed at the anodes. The quantity of oxides formed is not as great as it is in the low-acid cell, because fewer Mn++ reach the vicinity of the anodes."

The use of activated carbon for extracting gold and silver from pregnant cyanide solution and pulp has been investigated many times. The primary advantage of this use of activated carbon is that .the dissolved values can be recovered from slimy ore pulps or from slime portions of ore without settling and thickening or filtering. The loaded carbon is removed from the barren pulp, and the pulp can then be discarded. Activated carbon has been used recently in treating gold ores containing very little soluble silver. When the carbon was loaded with a suitable amount of gold, the silver load was negligible. The remaining problems concerned the removal of the gold from the carbon, the recovery of the gold as bullion, and the reuse of the unloaded carbon. As described in a recent report, a method that solved these problems was developed. The gold-laden carbon was leached with caustic sodium sulfide solution and the gold simultaneously recovered by electrolysis. Both the carbon and the spent solution can be reused. That process was applicable to gold-laden carbon only. It was not applicable to carbon carrying silver, because sodium sulfide does not leach silver from carbon but "fixes" it. It has been necessary, therefore, to develop a modified process for the removal or desorption of both gold and silver from loaded carbon. This modi¬fied process permits the use of activated carbon for extracting both gold and silver from gold ores carrying enough silver to have economical interest or in which silver may be the predominating value.

Wyoming contains many petroleum and natural-gas fields, and more than 250 geological structures have been mapped; however, only about 85 have been found (July 1938) to contain petroleum or natural gas, or both, in commercial quantities. To January 1938 approximately 434 million barrels of oil and 915 billion cubic feet of gas have been produced, and it was estimated that proved oil reserves in Wyoming amounted to 300 million barrels.' The Salt Creek field, the largest in the Rocky Mountain area, alone has produced 64 percent of the State's oil and 46 percent of its gas. This field ranked thirteenth among the producing fields of the United States in total cumulative production as of January 1, 1938. On this basis it ranks with the Kern River and Huntington Beach fields of California and the Butler County fields of Kansas. The Salt Creek field has declined in relative importance; in 1937, while still the largest oil-producing field in the State, it produced 31 percent of the oil and 11 percent of the gas extracted from all wells in Wyoming.

The data published in this retort cover only one phase of a special study of tile physical and chemical properties s of only Alabama coals made by the Bureau of Mines. In addition to determinations of friability, the survey included determinations of grindability, B.t.u. value, and ash-fusion temperature. Assay distillation tests, both for high- and low-temperature carbonization, and proximate and ultimate analyses were made also. However, this preliminary paper is concerned only with the results of friability tests and is issued to expedite the release of this information to the public. The friability, test measures the liability of a coal to break into smaller pieces when subjected to repeated handling, as occurs in the mining, preparation, and transportation operations. Friability depends on many physical characteristics of the coal that vary not only between different seams but also in the same seam. The laboratory methods of determining friability have been developed to give a practical means of estimating degradation of size. So far as is known to the authors, no data on the friability of Alabama coals have ever been published. This caper makes available for the first time fairly comprehensive3 information on this subject. Because the procedure for the tumbler test for determining the friability of coal is relatively new to the coal operators, the authors Lave included a, complete description of it in this report.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines tangentially impacted potential coal-cutter bit shank materials against sandstone to investigate the potential of the materials to ignite natural gas by a friction-generated hot streak. The shank material samples were mounted in a 24-in, 550-lb flywheel, which was rotated at surface speeds of 400 to 900 sfpm. The sandstone was advanced toward the rotating flywheel at feed rates of 1 mil per impact. The atmosphere mixture was 7 vol pct natural gas in air. Three grades of polycarbonate resin, an ultra-high-molecular weight polyethylene, and a zinc alloy (ZA27) were among the potential materials. None of these materials caused ignition of the methane at any of the three test speeds (400, 600, and 900 sfpm), but the above materials do not have sufficient strength to hold a carbide tip during coal cutting. Of the materials having sufficient strength to hold a carbide tip, three nickel-based alloys proved less likely to cause a natural gas ignition than did iron-based alloys such as 4340 (a commonly used shank material for coal cutters).

"INTRODUCTION An extensive test program is in progress by the Bureau of Mines to determine ways and means of recovering ferromanganese ore 5/ from the widespread domestic manganese and manganiferous iron deposits.Samples were received from the Stance property in southwestern Virginia, 12 miles northwest of Stoney Gap, in Bland County.The Stange mine is situated on the crest of Flat Top Mountain and is developed by open-cuts extending over several acres. The manganese deposit occurs in the Oriskany sandstone largely as a replacement of the sandstone, to some extent as breccia filling in the crusted parts of the sandstone, and as veins along joints, and bedding planes.The mine was first worked in 1917 and was operated during the war years. A long period of idleness was followed by intermittent operations in recent years. A small log-washing plant, consisting of a 20-foot log washer, was operated 1-1/4 miles northwest of the mine. The log-washer concentrates were crushed to minus- 1/2 inch and then washed in a second log washer to remove as much of the siliceous sandstone as possible. According to a communication from the operator, the double-washed concentrates were jigged and the jig concentrates marketed without further beneficiation."

"The large reserves of low-rank coals in the western United States are at a disadvantage in competing with the more mature but less plentiful eastern coals, which are nearer important markets and are more suitable for combustion and coke production. However, low-rank coals generally are amenable to hydrogenation, and the western coals might become an important source of liquid fuels and organic chemicals when petroleum is less plentiful.In view of these facts an the tremendous quantities available, further information on the western coals clearly desirable. The purpose of the work described in this paper was to study the hydrogenation characteristics of some of the low-rank western coals in discontinuous converters. The data obtained in this manner, which are inadequate for predicting the suitability of coals for large-scale continuous hydrogenation, were used as a basis for selecting samples for further study in the Bureau's experimental coal-hydrogenation plant (26, 35). 8/ Because of the general importance of the western coals and recently demonstrated relation between coal hydrogenation and petrograghy (14, 15, 16), the proportions of anthraxylon, (vitrain), translucent attritus, and opaque matter were determined. In some instances samples of anthraxylon were isolated and hydrogenated separately so that their properties might be compared with those of the entire coal. The samples studied include peat, brown coal, lignite, sub-bituminous coals, and low-rank bituminous coals."

The Bureau of Mines, in an effort to improve planning and development in coal mining, is investigating strata interactions associated with mining of multiple coalbeds. Two common interactions that occur between adjacent coalbeds are subsidence and pillar load transfer. The study described involves underground observations and measurements conducted at two Pennsylvania mines, each affected by one of these interactions. At the mine affected by subsidence, measurements show that undermining had little effect on upper mine pillar stability, but had a more severe effect on the development and maintenance of entries. Roof-to-floor measurements recorded over four times more convergence in entries developed over gob as compared with entries developed over support pillars in the lower mine. At the mine affected by pillar load transfer, Initial in situ measurements have shown the existence of a pressure arch in the lower workings. Prior research has shown that arch interaction between two adjacent openings can create stress concentrations in the in-nerburden. Underground measurements and results obtained from both mine sites correlate with theoretical and photoelastic multiple-seam models, and eventually these field data will serve to refine model accuracy. Further study of multiple-seam interaction mechanisms will lead to improved mine planning, increased resource conservation, and a safer working environment.

Literature concerned with management and supervisory training was reviewed and analyzed from the perspective of relative effectiveness of various training methods for improving knowledge and awareness, changing attitudes, improving problem solving skills, improving interpersonal skills, and improving on-the-job performance. Conclusions were drawn relative to each method and the current state of the field of management and leadership training. A 168 item annotated bibliography is presented.

A larger measure of safety attended the operation of the stone quarries and related plants in the United States during the calendar year 1935 than in any other year for which annual records are available for the industry. The accident rate, covering fatalities and nonfatal injuries that disabled an employee beyond the remainder of the day on which the accident occurred, was 38.19 per million man-hours of work performed. The nearest approach to this favorable record was in 1932 when the rate was 38.48. The rate for 1934 was 41.82; hence the record for 1935 was 9 percent better than that for 1934. Reports from operating companies showed that 51 men were killed by accidents in 1935 and 4,152 men were injured. (See table 37.) The industry employed 73,005 men and performed 110,033,341 man-hours of labor, an average of 1,507 hours of work per man. Measured in man-days, the total volume of labor was 14,623,303, or an average of 200 days of 7.52 hours per day for each man employed. These figures are not strictly comparable with similar figures for the preceding year, as the, coverage of the industry was more complete for 1935 than for 1934 because special facilities were available to the Bureau of Mines for conducting the 1935 canvass that were not available for the 1934 canvass. Reports covering identical plants that were active both in 1934 and 1935 indicate a reduction of about 7 percent in the number of men employed in 1935. This fact suggests that the apparent increase in the number of workers in 1935 is attributable chiefly, if not entirely, to the more complete coverage of operating plants in 1935. The plants from which this inference is drawn employed 21,799 men in 1934 compared with 20,248 in 1935.
