This paper describing the mining practices at the Chino mines at Santa Rita, Grant County, N. Mex., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The Nevada Consolidated Copper Co., Chino mine's, operates an open-cut copper mine at Santa Rita, Central mining district, Grant County, N. Mex. This mine is located about 16 miles east and slightly north of Silver City, the county seat. The ore is-transported in standard railroad cars by the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway Co., approximately 10 miles to Hurley where it is milled. The concentrated are shipped approximately l'70 miles over the same railroad to the smelter of the American Smelting and Refining Co., at El Paso, Tex. (fig. 1)

In modern warfare, mica is truly indispensable. Coordination of combatant units necessitates maintenance of intricate communications equipment, in the construction of which high-grade sheet mica is essential. Scrap, ground, and the poorer qualities of block mica, which are less essential to the military program, are not considered in this paper. Furthermore, as the paper is designed primarily to assist mica miners, mica derivatives, Such as splittings and films, also are excluded from discussion. Underground miners are exposed to some of the highest levels of diesel particulate matter (DPM) in the United States. Therefore, it is important to monitor the exposure of miners to DPM, but it can be difficult because of the complex composition of DPM and the number of interferences. Currently, elemental carbon (EC) is used as a surrogate because it makes up a significant fraction of the DPM and is not affected by interferences. Standard measurement methods for EC can be time consuming and only record end of shift results. In this research, a laser absorption technique that enables one to measure EC concentration in near real time was shown to be a beneficial tool. The real time data showed that the fresh air being drawn into a stone mine was not properly reaching the working area and needed to be redirected to decrease DPM concentrations. The real time data also provided a more accurate efficiency ofan environmental cab compared to just using the standard method by detecting the opening of the cab's window and door. The EC optical monitor was also worn by researchers in a mine to show how it can give not only the average concentration for the shift but also reveal when and where a miner is exposed to DPM. "INTRODUCTION This report describes the methods of development and operation and gives the results of controlled water injection into oil sands in Illinois. Prier to the date of this contract, Ocean Energy had developed and demonstrated a high efficiency fluorescent caplamp which operated from a standard 4 volt miner's caplamp battery. This unit produced about five times the light output of the standard incandescent miner's caplamp. The Company believed that the major market for this unique caplamp was in the industrial and municipal applications. Because of the additional safety requirements for coal mining use, and in conjunction with the much smaller market in the mining industry, the additional expense and difficulty of modifying this caplamp to comply with the Federal and State coal mine regulations were not considered at that time. Recognizing the potential of this lamp for improving illumination conditions for underground coal mining, the US Bureau of Mines contracted with Ocean Energy to make the required modifications to this lamp to bring it into compliance with the Federal and State of Pennsylvania regulations, and thereby, make this lamp available to the anthracite and bituminous coal mining industry. At the outset of the contract, the injection molds for the caplamp housing were being completed, and only prototype, hand fabricated, units were available for tests. The Bureau evaluated these prototype units and formulated a performance specification for the miner's version. Light level and distribution, weight, size, angle of tilt, and operating duration were all specified. In addition, it was required that the caplamp be com¬patible with existin charging equipment at the mines and that the final design be in full compliance with MESA Schedule 6D and he ultimately approved by MESA, Approval and Testing, as well as by the Pennsylvania Bureau of Deep Mine Safety. The scope of this contract covered the modifications required to achieve these objectives. It was agreed by the Bureau that all rights to the lamp, including design, material combinations, circuitry, etc. would remain with Ocean Energy. The charger/adapter system and components, which were developed under contract funds, are disclosed hero and become public knowledge and property. Patent applications have been filed by Ocean Energy to protect the mechanical and electrical design aspects of the lamp. It should be noted that this report contains details, designs and data which may be covered by one or more Ocean Energy patent applications, and disclosure herein is made only to provide better understanding of the contract results.

The Federal Bureau of Mines, under a contract with Ultrasystems, Inc., investigated the thermal oxidative degradation characteristics of conveyor belts used in underground mines. This included the determination of smoke evolution, glow characteristics, char yields, and the identification and quantification of all volatile decomposition products in the form of gram of specific product formed per gram of belt sample tested. In addition to these investigations, degradation studies were conducted on some pure ingredients used in conveyor-belt formulations. Three basic classes of belts were investigated: neoprene, polyvinyl chloride, and styrene-butadiene rubber compositions. The studies indicate that styrene-butadiene-based belts exhibit good flame resistance and are the least hazardous in regard to overall formation of toxic decomposition products. Under this program, thermogravimetric analysis was definitely established as a method of material differentiation.

Provide the U.S. mining industry with technology for designing environmentally sound, low-cost in situ leach mining operations to produce copper from small, deep, and/or low-grade copper oxide deposits. Approach Investigate the feasibility of a new mining method--in situ leach mining-as an alternative to conventional mining for copper. Study fundamental leaching technology that will facilitate future commercial operations. Develop guidelines and procedures that will enable mine operators to design and evaluate in situ leach mining operations for any specific copper oxide deposit.

Three-dimensional structural analyses of three instrumented areas of a deep, longwall coal mine have been performed using the finite element code BMINES. The three Instrumented areas include two single-entry portions and one double-entry portion of the Sunnyside No. 1 Mine, Sunnyside, Utah. The finite element models simulated the sequence of excavation in each test area: the advance of the entry, installation of structural supports, retreat of the longwall, caving behind the longwall, and accumulation and loading of the gob. The structural supports considered in these finite element models include rock bolts, wood cribs, concrete cribs, steel arch sets, and chocks. Mechanical simulation of the geologic environment is achieved through elastic/ perfectly plastic material models employing anisotropy to represent finely layered regions of the medium. The results of these calculations are com-pared with the instrumentation readings from the mine. These measurements include closures, crib loads, rock-bolt forces, and stress growth.

Pillar recovery continues to be a significant ground control hazard. During the past decade, 10 miners were killed during pillar extraction operations in southern West Virginia. Studies conducted during the past decade have identified a number of “risk factors” that can be used to evaluate pillar extraction plans: •Cut sequence •Final stump •Timber or Mobile Roof Supports •Roof bolting •Intersection span •Depth of cover •Roof quality •Age of workings For each of these factors, rock mechanics science suggests which alternative would be expected to be more risky. For example, numerical models were used to evaluate different cut sequences, and indicated that less roof convergence occurred with the outside lift method than with the Christmas tree in the particular environment simulated. For many of the risk factors, accident statistics confirm the science. One finding was that currently almost 70% of the retreat coal in southern WV is being mined with MRS. In contrast, timber supports were used in 70% of the past decade’s pillaring fatalities. This paper discusses each of the risk factors in turn, presents the relevant accident statistics, and shows how the risk factors can be combined to estimate the overall hazard. It also addresses the use of pillar design to minimize the risk of global stability hazards including squeezes, massive collapses, and bumps.

Electrical arcing injuries are the most common form of electrical injury in mining. MSHA data show that 381 "non-contact electric arc burn" injuries occurred in the mining industry from 1996 - 2005. A more detailed study of data from 1990-2001 showed that five types of apparatus - circuit breakers, conductors, nonpowered hand tools, electrical meters and test leads, and connectors and plugs were involved in two-thirds of the lost workday injuries. Many of the protections from electrical arcing injury available to workers in other industries stem from the application of National Fire Protection Association Standard 70E - Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace (NFPA 70E). NFPA 70E is a generally accepted industry guideline document, but excludes underground mining from its scope. Many of its practices and procedures, however, can be applied in the mining workplace to supplement the existing electrical safety requirements of Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations. This paper describes how NFPA 70E can be applied to mining workplaces after an analysis of the mine power system electrical arcing hazards has been completed (and Hazard/Risk Categories determined) using the tables from NFPA 70E or the calculation method as described in IEEE 1584. NFPA 70E can then be used to determine the levels and types of personal protective equipment (PPE) needed to protect miners against burn injuries. Appropriate lockout and tagout (LOTO) procedures for use in the mining industry are also described. Suggestions for better selection of electrically-rated hand tools are included. Recommendations for electrical meter selection and use based on transient withstand capability are also discussed.

The value of non fuel mineral production in Alabama in 1991 was $539.9 million, a decrease of $20.7 million, a result of the nationwide recession that was felt throughout the State's economy. The 3.7% decline in mineral sales was due primarily to a slowdown in construction, which had a major impact in the construction minerals mined instate. Production and sales of crushed stone and sand and gravel fell significantly below the value reported in 1990. Despite the recession, Alabama moved from 21st to 20th place nationally in mineral value. Mineral industry developments in 1991 were primarily in the metals manufacturing sector. Reynolds Metals Co., Sheffield, celebrated 50 years of operation in Alabama. During the November celebration, the company dedicated a $121 million expansion that included a new casting facility and sheet rolling operation. Gulf States Steel Corp., Gadsden, completed the first full year of operation of its new multimillion-dollar continuous caster.3 The Foundry of the Shoals Inc., Florence, replaced two coke-fired furnaces with electric furnaces.

A Bureau of Mines investigation was conducted to determine the effect of specimen volume on the apparent tensile strength of disks of St. Cloud Gray Granodiorite, Lithonia granite, and Rockville granite. The investigation used a technique developed by the Bureau to determine apparent tensile strength. Because the test specimens were selected without macroscopic defects, that is, cracks, joints, and planes of weakness, the strength variations are solely due to microscopic features. Several replications of each test were performed. Data for each set of specimens were fitted to a power law of the form y = axb, where y = apparent tensile strength, x = specimen volume, and a and b are constants. This power law is essentially a form of Weibull's theory. The average coefficients of correlation for St. Cloud Gray Granodiorite, Lithonia granite, and Rockville granite were 0.85, 0.53, and 0.78, respecitvely. In all cases a decrease in strength with increasing volume was noted; in the extreme case, a decrease of 40 pct was noted with an elevenfold increase in volume. The decrease in strength with increasing specimen volume is explained in terms of Weibull's theory.

This contract final report summarizes the design, fabrication and testing of canopy air curtain devices under Bureau of Mines Contract H0232067. The canopy air curtain device is designed to reduce the level of respirable dust exposure to a continuous mining machine operator while having a minimum effect on operator safety, mobility and comfort and being compatible with mining equipment. This contract was devoted to the development of a device which utilizes an invisible curtain of air to envelope a mining machine operator's breathing zone with filtered air to provide respiratory protection. Various concepts were evaluated by means of laboratory tests. One concept was selected and was tested on various mining machines at underground sites by means of MSA personal samplers. The canopy air curtain was found to be effective. The percent reductions over the ambient dust concentrations were about 30 to 75 percent depending on the amount of time the operator spent under the air curtain. At one test site, the device enabled the mining machine to operate within compliance. Donaldson Company is presently working on the commercial production of the device.

In 1986, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied part of the 20,071-acre South Fork Wilderness Study Area (OR-005-033) and part of the 8,791-acre Sand Hollow Wilderness Study Area (OR-005-034) in order to evaluate their identified mineral resources. The study areas are located in Crook County, OR, about 58 air miles east from Bend. The areas studied are underlain by Tertiary- and Quaternary-age volcanic and tuffaceous sedimentary rocks. No mineral resources were identified in or adjacent to the study area. Except for common opal and agate occurrences along the northern boundary of the study areas, no mines, prospects, or mineralized zones occur within the study areas. Bentonite is periodically mined less than 1 mi southwest of the Sand Hollow study area boundary. Neither of the study areas has geothermal leases, but both areas are under lease for oil and gas.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a method for determining the H2S content in natural gas samples. A gas chromatograph with a flame photometric detector was used to analyze samples with H2S concentrations ranging from 5,000 ppm to a minimum detectable limit of 0.01 ppm. A mass spectrometer was used to analyze samples containing H2S in amounts greater than 5,000 ppm. Methods are presented for preparing containers for H2S samples and for preparing standards using partial pressure and weighed standard methods, Sample collection techniques are discussed, as are analytical results which illustrate the loss of H2S while in the sample container and provide a basis for evaluating containers used for sampling and standard preparation.

The accident-frequency rate for placer mining in 1942 is reported as 36.923 accidents per million man-hours worked. This figure places placer-mining accident frequency slightly higher than that given for quarrying-35.7-but considerably under the 78.0 for coal mining and 56.5 for metal mining.4 Placer mining is subdivided into four types of activity: Underground, surface, dredging, and hydraulicking. It is the purpose of this paper to present and discuss safety practices in dredging and hydraulic mining; therefore, the following considerations will be limited to these two types of placer mining.

The technology of clay and the manufacture of ceramic products therefrom, and also the clay resources of most of the individual States, are already covered by a voluminous literature. The present resume touches these matters only briefly; its purpose is essentially to bring together in small compass certain of the elementary factors affecting the potential commercial value of a clay deposit. In its preparation the author made extensive use of the annual chapters on Clay in Mineral Resources of the United States and in the two annual issues of the Minerals. Yearbook that succeeded them. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The term ?clay? includes a great variety of substances that may differ widely in chemical mineralogical and physical properties. No two clays are exactly alike. All of them however, have the prominent characteristic of becoming more or less plastic when wet. Nearly all of the useful clays can be molded into articles, will hold their shape while being dried, and can be converted into a hard, rocklike substance by heat. Clay may, and in fact usually does, consist of a number of minerals among the commonest of which are kaolinite, quartz, feldspar, iron oxides, mica, bauxite, calcite, and manganese oxides. Organic matter is often present. Pure kaolinite, which has the formula A1203. 2 SiO2. 2H2O, is ordinarily, considered to be the parent "clay substance," butt most clays contain other hydrated mixtures of alumina and silica (aluminosilicic acids) along with indefinite amounts of sand and other nonessential minerals3/ Even, this so-called inert matter affects the plasticity, drying shrinkage, ease of drying, and final density, and at high temperatures may react chemically with the clay substance.
