"The Candego property is in Boisbuisson and Christie Townships, Quebec, about 13 miles south of Marsoui, a village on the north coast of the Gaspe peninsula, 80 miles east of the railhead at Matane. It was the first producing mine in the peninsula. Production to October 1954, when operations were suspended, totalled 68,497 tons of ore, which yielded concentrates containing 8,706,535 lb. lead, 5,870,272 lb. zinc, 355,526 oz. silver, and about 1,000 oz. gold. The property was acquired by the present company in the summer of 1955.The mine has been developed by seven adits, driven into the west slope of the valley of the Marsoui River. The river here is at an elevation of about 1,600 feet, and is roughly 1,500 feet below the level of the adjacent upland. Adit elevations range from 1,760 to 2,330 feet. Five of them are in one vertical zone, on what was originally believed to be a single vein. Past production has come from Nos. l to 5; the chief present high-grade ore reserves are in No. 7.The author's observations were made in adits Nos. 3 to 6, in several of the old pits, in the surface trenches, and on drill core, at various times between December 1952 and September 1953. Much of the surrounding area has been mapped by Jones (I) and McGerrigle (2) for the Quebec Department of Mines. H. M. Kingsbury served as consulting geologist to the mining company for several years.General GeologyThe Candego veins occur in Lower ( ?) Ordovician sedimentary rocks which form a strip about 15 miles wide along the north coast of the Gaspé peninsula. The series includes limestones, shales, and sandstones, mildly metamorphosed in places. Three miles south of the mine is the north contact of the granitic intrusive, regarded as Lower or Middle Devonian, which underlies the Tabletop Mountains area. This batholith is about 10 miles long, in a north-south direction, and about 4 miles wide. At Mount Albert, about 5 miles west of the Tabletop intrusion, is a group of basic rocks, amphibolites and serpentinized peridotites, thought to have been intruded at the close of the Ordovician."

La mine Tio (QIT Fer et Titane Inc.) exploite à ciel ouvert un gisement d?ilménite massive depuis 1950, générant jusqu?à maintenant plus de 70 Mt de roches stériles potentiellement génératrices de drainage neutre contaminé (DNC), dont une partie est submergée dans le lac Petitpas, au nord de la mine. Si généralement l?ennoiement des rejets miniers a un effet bénéfique pour limiter la contamination des eaux, cela reste à prouver pour ce qui est des stériles générateurs de DNC. Des essais en réservoirs ont été réalisés afin d?évaluer la réactivité de trois différents types de stériles submergés, qui ont été choisis en fonction de leur teneur en ilménite. Afin d?évaluer l?impact de la matière organique sur la réactivité des stériles submergés, chaque type de stérile est étudié en immersion simple ainsi que combinée à des sédiments prélevés au lac Allard, à proximité de la mine, d?où l?eau utilisée dans les essais a aussi été prélevée. L?évolution des teneurs en Ca, Mg, Si et Ni durant les 8 premiers mois d?étude démontrent que les stériles immergés sont réactifs, mais l?impact de la matière organique demeure pour l?instant difficile à préciser. Tank tests on Tio mine waste rock The Tio mine (QIT Iron and Titanium Inc.) exploits a massive ilmenite ore as an open pit since 1950, producing over 70Mt of potentially contaminated neutral drainage (CND)-generating waste rocks. While the underwater disposal of mine wastes generally show a beneficial effect on water contamination, this method still needs to be approved for CND-generating waste rocks. Tank tests were realized in order to evaluate the reactivity in underwater conditions of 3 different waste rock types, chosen with regards to their ilmenite content. In order to evaluate the impact of organic matter on the reactivity of underwater waste rock, each waste rock type was studied in simple immersion and in combination with sediments sampled at Allard lake, located near the mine, where the water for the tests was also sampled. The evolution of Ca, Mg, Si and Ni during the 8 first months of testing show that the waste rocks are reactive underwater, but the impact of the organic matter is till hard to define.

"The East Bull Lake gabbro-anorthosite intrusion is one of several Early Proterozoic layered mafic intrusions occurring along the Southern Province - Superior Province boundary in the Elliot Lake - Sudbury region, Ontario. The base of the East Bull Lake intrusion comprises abundant plagioclase cumulates (Leucogabbronorite Zone) hosting two distinct styles of sulfide mineralization: (1) disseminated magmatic sulfides, and (2) disseminated to massive, structurally controlled sulfides. Both types of mineralization are enriched in Pd, Pt, Au, Cu and Ni. The host rocks to the sulfide mineralization display a range of interesting features including nodular textures, dendriticpegmatitic mafic pods, inclusion-rich zones (pyroxenite, anorthosite and granitic inclusions) and magmatic breccias. Disseminated chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and pentlandite occur in concentrations of up to 100/0 within erratically distributed gossan pods near the base of the intrusion. The sulfides were originally precipitated from intercumulus liquids, but were subsequently recrystallized and locally remobilized along fractures during the major period of metamorphism and deformation that affected the East Bull Lake intrusion. The base- and precious-metal tenor of the structurally controlled sulfides can be explained by extensive remobilization and reconcentration of the pre-existing magmatic sulfides in the vicinity of a major shear zone. Both styles of sulfide mineralization locally contain ppm abundances of POE + Au and are generally Pd- and Cu-rich, although both display large variations in Pd:Pt and Cu:Ni ratios. The magmatic sulfides are more strongly enriched in POE and contain up to 1470 ppm Pd in 100% sulfide. Several factors, including source characteristics, magmatic processes (crustal assimilation, fractional crystallization) and post-magmatic interaction with hydrous fluid, have influenced the present distribution of POE, Cu and Ni in the East Bull Lake intrusion.The magmatic sulfide occurrences from the East Bull Lake intrusion compare favorably with marginal-type deposits from rift-related intrusions (Noril'sk-Talnakh region, Siberia; Duluth Complex, U.S.A.) in terms of their distribution, but are most similar to reef-type POE deposits with respect to their base- and precious-metal geochemistry. The combination of high POE tenors and large tonnages that is observed for the POE-Cu-Ni mineralization from the East Bull Lake intrusion suggests that a good potential exists for the presence of economic concentrations of Pd, Pt, Au, Cu and Ni in the intrusion. On a global scale, the East Bull Lake intrusion is part of a suite of Early Proterozoic plutons, many of which contain significant volumes of stratiform and/or marginaltype POE-Cu-Ni mineralization. The East Bull Lake intrusion is also one of the oldest mineralized intrusions derived from a sub-Superior Province mantle source region that has given rise to several significant magmatic POE-Cu-Ni deposits during the period 2.5 Ga to 1.1 Ga."

"The recycling of wastepaper has become an important and common process worldwide. Techniques similar to those used in the mineral processing industry are used to produce high quality recycled fibers for use in newsprint. The mineral processing group at McGill University in conjunction with the Pulp and Paper industry (Mechanical and Chemi-mechanical Wood Pulp Network) has adapted one of these techniques, column flotation, for the purpose of deinking wastepaper. This article describes the typical process of recycling wastepaper from a mineral processing point of view. It also presents results from McGill University's flotation column test work at a Quebec wastepaper recycling facility.IntroductionThe recycling of wastepaper has become an important and common process worldwide, including Canada which is now the world's largest importer of wastepaper (CPPA, 1996). Much of the current drive to increase the utilization rate of recovered paper is a reaction to the solid-waste disposal problem that faces many Canadian and U.S. municipalities. The real problem in the disposal of solid waste is not the absolute amount of garbage that must be disposed of each year but this amount in relation to available disposal capacity.Environmental restrictions on the creation of new landfill sites and incinerators (the two main options for disposal of municipal solid waste) have tightened the demand/supply balance in the solid waste disposal market. This shrinking availability of waste disposal sites in the face of increasing population with greater disposal requirements defines the Developed World's solid waste crisis. Not only are there fewer disposal sites available, but the costs of using them is skyrocketing. These factors have increased government regulations mandating recycled paper content in newsprint. Conservation and environmental issues make the current drive for wastepaper recycling a real issue and business opportunity.A key to the success of producing quality recycled fibers from wastepaper is the deinking technology. The production of tissue papers, paper towels and newsprint requires regenerated fibers which are substantially free of ink particles. Of the various options available, mineral processing techniques can offer the most economical, environmentally acceptable and versatile strategies (Yoon, 1993). Today, it is recognized that flotation is one of the most effective processes for removing ink particles in the production of a high quality product. In a collaborative program with the Pulp and Paper industry, the mineral processing group at McGill University has adapted column flotation technology for this purpose. This article will describe the typical process of deinking from a mineral processing point of view (Part A). It will also present some results from McGill University's flotation column test work at a nearby paper recycling facility (Part 8)."

"The Brenda mine is located in south central British Columbia, 22 km north west of Peachland, in the heart of the Okanagan Valley. Situated at an elevation of 1500 metres, the mine area straddles the divide between the headwaters of Trepanier Creek and Peachland Creek. These flow into Okanagan Lake, the chief valley water resource located 1100 metres below. The creeks are of great significance to the water management of the area as they constitute the water supply for the Municipality of Peachland, a thriving retirement community with a population of 5000. A location map is shown in Figure 1.The history of the Brenda Mine operation has been well documented previously. After twenty years of operation, the open pit mine shut down in June 1990 due to the depletion of its ore reserves. During the course of its life, it produced 109 million tonnes of waste rock which is thought to contain approximately 0.10% copper as chalcopyrite and 0.015% molybdenum as molybdenite stored in four rock piles around the pit. Similarly, approximately 200 million tonnes of tailings were produced grading 0.015% copper and 0.005% molybdenum. During operation, tailings were hydrocycloned to produce a coarse sand for dam building with the fine slime stored behind the dam. It is estimated that 40% of the tailings were used for the dam construction. The layout of the mine site is shown in Figure 2.The mine was operated under a zero discharge permit. This was achieved by diverting practically all surface water flowing towards the mine area around the site. Water affected by mine operations, was discharged to the tailings impoundment, and recycled to the mill for reuse. The recycle rate was 90% and seepage from the tailings embankment and saddle dam was pumped back to the tailings pond. Because acid drainage was not a problem with the low grade Brenda rock, runoff from the rockpiles was initially released to the local environment. However, due to the alkaline nature of the waste rock, dissolution of low concentrations of molybdenum in the site runoff waters became evident by the late 1970's. The molybdenum content of Peachland Lake, the water reservoir for the municipality of Peachland, approached the Canadian Drinking Water Standard of 0.25 ppm. By 1979, a series of diversion and collection ditches was completed to direct all runoff water from the rockpiles to the tailings impoundment area. This had a significant detrimental effect on the site water balance causing it to go into a considerable surplus condition. During normal operation, this oversupply was contained by the rate of tailings dam building. An economic shutdown of the mine during 1984 forced a limited discharge from the site to protect the integrity of the tailings dam."

During the past few years, synthetic efforts have been addressed to the synthesis of polymeric materials with optical or semiconducting properties or even with capabilities to act as sensors for volatile organic compounds (1). The most recent studies have been concerned with the synthesis of heterometallic systems with short metal-metal interactions and the determination of their optical properties. These complexes are undoubtly interesting from a theoretical viewpoint and include an emerging class of luminescent materials, in which the observed luminescence results mainly from the interactions among the different metal centers, as well as the environments of these atoms. The understanding of the photophysics and photochemistry of these products could permit the design of complexes with appropriate metals and ligands chosen for individual applications. Following a synthetic strategy consisting on reactions between acid heterometal complexes and basic gold precursors we have succeded in synthesizing supramolecular assemblies formed via acid-base stacking, which display tunable luminescence or selective and reversible sensitivity to Vapour Organic Compounds (VOC?s) (2-5). In this sense, in accord with previous Mössbauer studies carried out in the gold precursor complex [AuR2]- (R = C6F5), the basic properties of this and related materials have been employed as building blocks of supramolecular assemblies in their reactions with complexes in wich the metallic centers act as lewis acids as, for instance, Tl(I) or Ag(I) (6). For instance, in the case of silver, by reacting equimolecular quantities of [NBu4][Au(C6F5)2] with AgClO4, in acetone, a solid of stoichiometry [Au2Ag2(C6F5)4(OCMe2)2]n is obtained. The polymeric nature of this material in solid state is confirmed through X-ray analyses (figure 1). It consists of polymeric chains formed by repetition of Au2Ag2 moieties linked through short gold-gold interactions. Nevertheless, in solution, the nature of this polymeric materials was still a matter of controversy and, in this case, the optical properties have been shown as useful tools in order to obtain information. Thus, while dilute acetone solutions of this complex give a emission coming from pentafluorphenyl localized ??* excited states, in accord with the presence of isolated tetranuclear Au2Ag2 units, when the measurements are done at different and higher concentrations, a band that does not obey the Lambert-Beer law appears. This deviation is consistent with molecular aggregation in solution of these units through gold-gold interactions, and a clear correlation between the emssion wavelength and the structure in the solid state and in solution is shown (figure 2). DFT calculations accord with the observed experimental behaviour and show the nature of the orbitals involved in each transition.

The University of New South Wales (UNSW) has been a world leader in the development of innovative virtual reality technologies over the last 10 to 15 years. These developments have included developing the world?s first 360° surround, virtual reality (VR), stereo projection theatre system known as AVIE (Advanced Visualisation and Interactive Environment), which was developed by iCinema, a collaborative venture between the UNSW Faculties of Engineering and College of Fine Arts. The UNSW School of Mining Engineering has been responsible for development of mining applications virtual reality software modules and to date, has developed eighteen different mine safety training and mining engineering education modules which run in the AVIE environment. This platform and technology package provides a unique ?immersive environment? experience for groups of trainees or students who can engage with the simulated environment in the complete safety of the virtual reality theatre. In all of the major international mining industries, safety is of paramount importance, and training of personnel is an essential component of any comprehensive proactive safety management system. All personnel need to be aware of the inevitable hazards around them at all times, as well as understand appropriate safety and operational procedures. This can be done by conventional class-room style training sessions, or by provision of training documentation. However the effectiveness of such systems is often very limited due to the inability of trainers to engage with the audience for a lengthy period of time; or to convey the often complex and variable mining environments and situations which can exist in a typical mine. The ability to immerse the trainees in a virtual mine environment, with all the reality of an actual mine but with none of the physical exposure to actual hazards, provides a far more effective and engaging training experience. Furthermore, in the virtual world, trainees can be exposed to the very unlikely, but nevertheless high consequence hazards such as mine fires, falls of ground or outbursts, without any risk to their safety and well-being. The end result is that trainees will be far more engaged with the learning environment they find themselves in, and will develop a far higher level of understanding of the topics, rather than simply experiencing a passive class-room style learning environment offered by conventional training modes. The UNSW systems have been implemented widely within the Australian mining industry and the mining engineering education sector and are now being adopted internationally. This paper presents an overview of the innovative technologies involved in these virtual reality systems ? as applied to the mining industry. Modules developed for both mineworker training and mining engineering student learning will be presented, to illustrate the effectiveness and value of such a training and education approach.

Process control and optimization have always been crucial aspects in the mineral processing industry, and expectations constantly increase to cope with more stringent security, quality, efficiency, and environmental performances. The main challenges to reduce variability of key process variables, and steer profits to higher values while maintaining sustainability indexes within acceptable ranges come from nonlinear responses and circulating loads. The most commonly implemented control strategies rely on simple PID controllers for practical implementation and maintenance considerations. If arguably good performances are accomplished when these are adequately set up, there is also room for further gains by using more advanced methods such as model-based techniques. There is thus a need for more realistic process and equipment models. Based on advances of the past few decades, this paper introduces an autogenous/semi-autogenous mill (AG/SAG) model to be included in a modular comminution circuit simulation toolbox comprising ball/rod mills, material handling, and classification devices. The proposed mill model incorporates a modified version of the classic comminution equation that makes grinding rates proportional to the energy input. It requires the determination of a selection function (fragmentation rates) and a breaking function (fragments distribution). The former is modelled with an S-shaped curve characteristic of AG/SAG processes and the latter is a size-relative distribution of the produced fragments. The power draw is predicted employing the empirical equation of Austin. The paper also develops a case study to illustrate how the proposed simulation framework can capture the behaviour of an actual plant. Model calibration consists in an optimization problem that search the global minimum of the difference between predicted and measured/estimated size distributions, power draw, solid fractions, etc. Results demonstrate that the mill simulator can mimic an actual process in its operation conditions. INTRODUCTION Comminution is a key stage in the mineral processing industry, obviously because the phases of interest must be liberated to be able to recover them. In general terms, the global performance of a plant depends largely on the efficiency of the grinding circuit and on the material properties such as its grindability, density, and mineral grades. The subject has vastly been studied since as early as the 19th century, when Rittinger (1867) and Kick (1883) developed some of the first empirical models to relate grinding and energy input. The great interest in the subject comes from the fact that this operation is costly and, probably most concerning, highly inefficient. Buckingham et al. (2011) estimated that ore comminution can represent up to 60% of the overall plant power draw. Moreover, only a modest fraction of the power draw effectively translates into rock fragmentation. For grinding, estimates range between 1% and 25%, depending on the reference used, while the rest is mainly lost as heath (Fuerstenau & Abouzeid, 2002; Tromans & Meech, 2002; Bouchard et al., 2017).

The Flash Smelting Process for copper and nickel production has been one of the most successful new metallurgical process developments in the 20th century. The experimental data from laboratory scale investigations of studies has produced information and insight into the reaction mechanisms and kinetics of the flash reactions of copper concentrates. Advanced computer models coupling chemical reactions with a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software became possible with the development of commercial CFD software together with increased computing power. Currently, there are both experimental and CFD modelling, including also CFD–DEM coupling (Discrete Element Method), studies ongoing for investigating the kinetics of matte – slag reactions in the flash smelting furnace (FSF) settler. The ultimate goal of the modelling work is to develop a comprehensive FSF model for studying the behavior of changing raw materials, both primary and secondary, and distribution of their elements between the matte, slag, and gas phases. The use of User-Defined-Functions (UDF) is one way to digitalize metallurgical knowledge and experimental information to be used for supporting process experts and development of artificial intelligence applications in metallurgy. In this paper, a review of the development of the FSF reaction shaft modelling and experimental investigations, and the current work for the settler reactions’ experiments and modelling are presented. INTRODUCTION The Outotec Flash Smelting process (Bryk, Ryselin, Honkasalo, & Malmström 1958) has been used in the copper and nickel industry for 70 years with continuous support from experimental investigations by many research groups in academia, among others Jorgensen and Segnit (1977); Jokilaakso, Suominen, Taskinen and Lilius (1991), Chaubal and Sohn (1986), Kim and Themelis (1986), and in industry Mäkinen and Jåfs (1982); Kojo, Lahtinen and Miettinen (2009); Tuominen, Pienimäki and Fagerlund (2016). It has been developed also for pyrite and lead smelting (Asteljoki, Sulanto & Talonen, 1984). A schematic illustration of the FSF and other main parts of the process is depicted in Figure 1. Also, two and three dimensional physical water or gas models have extensively been used in product and process development (Lilja & Rajainmäki 1995). During the recent decades, computer based models have increasingly been adopted in the FSF research and development (Ahokainen & Jokilaakso, 1998); Ahokainen, Jokilaakso, Taskinen & Kytö, 2006; Hahn & Sohn, 1990; Jorgensen & Elliot, 1992; Zhou, Zhou, Chen & Mao, 2014; White, Haywood, Ranasinghe & Chen, 2015) to name a few, but also in supporting engineering and sales of the technology (Miettinen 2017). Even though the reactions of the sulfidic concentrate particles have been included in the reaction shaft modelling, the complete FSF model with both gas-solid/drop and molten slag/matte drop has so far been and still is too demanding for today’s computer hardware.

The Top Submerged Lance (TSL) technology has obtained significant importance in the pyrometallurgy industry for nearly four decades. One of the advantages of TSL furnace is its high reaction rate, which is caused by splashing and turbulence of the melt. In contradiction, this phenomenon stands as a barrier for conducting experimental investigations to validate the simulation models. The highly turbulent and splashing environment in the TSL furnace is caused due to the immersion of the lance into the slag layer and thus the effect of the flame structure is directly related to the splashing, turbulence, reaction kinetics and life-span of the lance. Moreover, the material properties such as viscosity, density and the surface tension will also influence the flame structure. As a first step to understand the flame structure, attempts are made to generate a stable flame of the lance in an open environment. INTRODUCTION Top Submerged Lance (TSL) technology was invented during the 1970s at Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia by Floyd and Denholm. This technology was later commercialised and currently, there are about 100 TSL plants around the world commissioned by various licence holders such as AUSMELT (Outotec) and ISASMELT (Xstrata- Glencore Technology). Copper is the most produced non-ferrous metal followed by lead and zinc, see Hunt (2005). Today, a wide range of primary, secondary, and complex recycling materials are used as a feed material in the TSL, Alvear et al. (2010), Kaye et al. (2008). The working principle of TSL technology lies on inserting and submerging a lance from the top of a vertical cylindrical chamber into the slag layer. The lance is considered as the heart of the furnace, where the air and fuel are transported through two concentric tubes and are mixed in a combustion chamber, which is approximately 7 cm from the tip of the lance (considering the pilot-scale TSL furnace at the Institute for Nonferrous Metallurgy and Purest Materials - INEMET). The TSL furnace is very flexible with the type of fuel, feed material and the air input. The fuel can be natural gas/heating oil/fine coal particles and the air could be enriched with oxygen (Figure 1). The general mechanism of the TSL furnace lies on feeding the material from the top of the furnace and the material is pulled into the molten bath due to the high turbulent atmosphere, which results in high reaction rates. The thermocouples installed in the furnace (i.e. in the ceramic linings) allow the operator to know the temperature of the melt. For example, in the case of copper production the tapped material (i.e. matte/metal) can be transported to a settler for further processing or directly used.

Les activités minières peuvent produire de grandes quantités de roches stériles, qui sont typiquement entreposées dans des empilements de surface, au dessus la nappe phréatique. Ces haldes peuvent occuper une superficie de plusieurs dizaines d?hectares, et s?élever à plus de cent mètres. Pour des exploitations en roches dures, les roches stériles ont usuellement une granulométrie qui contient des particules de la taille d?un sol silteux jusqu?à des cailloux et blocs de taille métrique. La structure interne d?une halde construite sur une surface relativement plane comprend généralement deux zones principales. La première zone se trouve au coeur de l?empilement, et elle est formée par la présence de plusieurs stratifications subhorizontales (avec des couches denses et lâches) due à l?effet des équipements lourds qui compactent et brisent les grains. La deuxième zone se trouve aux endroits où les stériles ont été déversés en crête, par des camions ou des butoirs, ce qui induit une ségrégation des particules sur les flancs, le long de la pente. Selon la séquence de mise en place, la distribution granulométrique et la hauteur des bancs, un grano-classement plus ou moins développé se produit, avec les particules les plus grosses au bas de la pente et les particules plus fines au sommet ; on observe aussi une stratification inclinée due à l?avancement latéral du front de déposition. Ces éléments de la structure interne d?une halde influencent la distribution et le mouvement de l?eau (et de l?air). Pour évaluer la distribution des propriétés des matériaux dans une halde, on doit usuellement avoir recours à une combinaison de techniques qui fournissent des informations sur les caractéristiques hydrogéologiques et géochimiques des roches stériles. A cet égard, certaines techniques géophysiques sont particulièrement intéressantes car elles permettent une cartographie tridimensionnelle des variations des propriétés. Les informations obtenues de diverses techniques de mesures utilisées conjointement peuvent alors être employées afin de construire un modèle numérique qui permet d?analyser les écoulements non saturés de l?eau et le transport réactif des contaminants. De telles simulations aident à mieux comprendre la réponse de la halde dans son état actuel et futur, ce qui fournit des arguments pour ajuster la séquence de déposition pour élaborer le plan de fermeture et pour sélectionner la stratégie d?instrumentation et de suivi de l?empilement. "A low-grade concentrate from the Crevier Township, Quebec, containing 1.8% Ta205 and 13.7% Nb205 was reduced with carbon at 1600°C, and niobium and tantalum were selectively absorbed in liquid iron. To slag off the zirconia-rich gangue, some silica and lime were added as flux. Metallic iron was added in such a way that the combined contents of TaC and NbC did not exceed 20% in the ferroalloy . Up to 95% of the niobium, and up to 80% of the tantalum contained in the concentrate were recovered in the metal. The ferroalloy was ground finely and dissolved in 2 wt % sulphuric acid to leach out iron and silicon preferentially. The insoluble residue consisted principally of NbC and TaC, the calcination of which yielded an enriched concentrate comprising 80% Nb2O5 and 8% Ta2O5. The insoluble residue could also be chlorinated to obtain an impure liquid of Nb2Cl5 and TaCl5. Process variables and their effects are discussed in terms of higher metal recoveries in the smelting.IntroductionPresently, about one-third of the world production of tantalum comes from the pyrometallurgical reprocessing of tin slag, a by-product of tin smelting, containing sometimes 2 to 10% Ta205 and about the same amount of Nb205. Upon heating tin slags with carbon at about 1600°C in an electric furnace, tantalum and niobium oxides are converted to TaC and NbC, which are absorbed by the coexisting phase of molten metallic iron(1,2). The Fe-Nb-Ta-C melts cannot be decarburized by oxidation because of the preferential formation of Nb and Ta oxides over CO gas(3). So, the ferroalloys containing tantalum and niobium carbides are commercially treated by acid-leaching and I or chlorination to eliminate iron and thus permitting the eventual recovery of purified tantalum and niobium oxides(2).Absorbing Ta and Nb carbides in molten iron was first proposed and demonstrated by Zimmerley and Back(4) in 1957 in order to recover selectively tantalum and niobium from lowgrade concentrates. The process was successfully applied to the electric furnace smelting of tin slags by Hunter and Fursmant(5) over a period preceding 1965."

"This paper describes the development and application of single-stage fluidized bed continuous ion exchange to the following processes: removal of base metals from mine water; cyanide removal from gold mill waste; uranium removal from sulphuric acid leach liquor; and uranium removal from mine water. IntroductionThe recovery of metals by fixed bed ion exchange has been practiced for many years. However, the operation has been semi-continuous and can only treat clarified liquors. Substantial savings could be made if the operation were continuous, thus reducing the resin inventory, and if the costly filtration and clarification steps could be eliminated. Work has been in progress over the past twenty-five years on the recovery of metals from unfiltered ore leach slurries, heap leach liquors and mine drainage waters containing a small amount of suspended solids. In the case of dilute waste solutions, with suspended matter and high flow rates, filtration is usually prohibitively expensive.Continuous ion exchange operation using fluidized beds has made it possible to reduce considerably the resin inventory and to allow the treatment of unclarified liquors and slurries. The subject has been reviewed on several occasions (1. 2. 3, 4). Although fluidized beds in multi-stage columns are an improvement over previous resin-in-pulp treatment, they have complicated internal structure and I or involved automatic control systems to move the resin stages.Slater and Prud'homme performed studies on multi-stage fluid beds, and concluded that the performance of single, deep fluidized beds of resin with continuous or semi-continuous flow of both phases would be worth investigating, particularly in the case of very dilute metal solutionsoi, A pilot plant was designed and built at CANMET in a cooperative project with Dr. Slateroi. The use of deep fluidized beds of resin (with a large height/diameter ratio) for treating dilute solutions has the attraction of engineering simplicity. Extreme simplicity of equipment design is considered of paramount importance when treating, for example, mine waters at high flow rates, possibly of the order of several million gallons per day. This paper describes the development of the concept of single-stage fluidized bed continuous ion exchange arid reviews the pilotplant development of processes for the treatment of base metal mine water, cyanide waste water, uranium leach liquor and uranium mine water."

"A computer-assisted process control system for the Noranda Process Reactor Wa5 installed at the Home smelter in 1991. Operating as an advisory tool for the furnace operators, and using a flexible oxygen balance as the basic building block of the computer program, the new control system has helped to reduce the variability in the grade of the matte produced by 50% . The smelter is currently operating at a 72% copper matte, with a standard deviation of between 1.0 and 1.3, while treating a wide range of concentrates, secondary materials and scrap. Enhanced process control has allowed for longer reactor campaigns, and improved stability of the converting operation.This paper reviews the feed classification and blending practice used at the smelter, outlines the strategy of the new computer control system, and summarizes the benefits realized since the implementation of the system in early 1990.IntroductionUntil 1989 the Noranda Home smelter operated as a multi furnace smelter, at one time having three hot-charge reverberatory furnaces, and finally operating with one wet-charge reverberatory furnace and one Noranda Process Reactor. In 1989 the final reverberatory furnace was closed and the Reactor became the sole smelting vessel, treating around 750 000 tonnes of concentrate, secondary materials, and scrap per year. At the time of the start-up of theNoranda Reactor in 1973, the vessel was capable of treating 750tonnes per day of a heterogeneous mixture of copper concentrates, fluxes and secondary materials to produce copper in one operation. Through process improvements, and the introduction of additional oxygen in 1982(pannell and Mackey, 1988), the daily tonnage increased to 1800 tonnes by 1988. The operation had also been changed to produce a high-grade matte instead of copper. Figure1 illustrates the main features of the reactor, a cylindrical vessel which is charged at one end and tapped at the other. The matteis subsequently processed through Peirce-Smith converters and anode furnaces before being cast into copper anodes. Figure 2 outlines the progressive increase in the furnace smelting capacity. Over this period the percentage of secondary materials, and scrap feeds also increased to approximately 110 000 tonnes per year, or 15% of the total new feed input (Bedard et al., 1991). Now operating wholly as a custom feed operation, the Home smelter can treat over 2200tonnes per day of new metal-bearing material."

"The current advanced technologies for the manufacture of light weight metals processing significantly increasing and attributes to the safety, performance, recyclability and economy. Still lack of technologies developed for light weight metals processing waste utilization and application. Environmentally friendly methods need to develop for better understanding the processing waste utilization. Alumina and aluminium processing creates a wide range of waste products, the most significant being is red mud. Bauxite residue is a high volume hazardous waste and nearly 3 billion tons have been dumped worldwide. Approximately, 120 Million tons/yr of red mud being produced without any environmental sustainable solution. Currently the most significant technology is waste utilization. The bauxite residue is suitable for road base construction, golf bunker sand, back fill and, general fill. Sustainable recycling technologies are necessary for the bauxite residue utilization for the recovery of rare earth elements and cement materials. Carbonation or CO2 sequestration of carbon dioxide is a method pioneered for the bauxite residue is modified to reduce alkalinity. The carbonation of alkaline material is an inexpensive and safe process that leads to the formation of thermodynamically stable products. The use of the carbonation can be an advantageous solution for environmental climate change and sustainability problems in the new century.INTRODUCTIONIn 2014, bauxite consumption was estimated to be 9.6 million tons, nearly all of which was imported, worth an estimated 269 million dollars. More than 95% of the bauxite was converted to alumina, and the remaining 5% went to non-metallurgical products, such as abrasives, chemicals, proppants, and refractories. Global aluminum demand is growing steadily spurred by growth in India and China (RBCAluminum Market Outlook, 2013) (Figure 1). Aluminum consumption is expected to rise 5% annually through the end of the decade, reaching 67 million tons per year by 2020. Global bauxite production decreased by 17% from that of 2013, principally owing to lower production in Indonesia. In response to a Government ban on exporting bauxite and other unprocessed mineral ores that took effect on January 12, 2014, bauxite mines throughout Indonesia shut down and production decreased from 55.7 million tons in 2013 to an estimated 500,000 tons in 2014. The ban was part of a mining law that was instituted in 2009 to increase development of downstream processing facilities in Indonesia."

"An experimental study has been carried out in order to study the deformation of porous brittle materials under plane strain indentation. Gypsum, which is well known model system for understanding the behaviour of soft rocks, is used in this study. The effect of wedge angle is investigated in this research through this series of experiments, using wedges of 3 different apical angles. High-speed, high-resolution images are captured using a CMOS camera during the experiment. The images obtained are analyzed using a Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) algorithm in order to obtain the evolving velocity, strain-rate and strain fields.INTRODUCTIONThe problem of indentation, which is usually referred to in the context of hardness testing is ubiquitous as a material characterization technique for a large class of solids. Mechanical properties of materials such as yield stress, flow stress, fracture toughness, elastic moduli etc. can be related to the hardness of a given solid. The indentation problem involves a given material or solid (whose properties are to be determined) indented by a relatively harder material (indenter) allowing the solid to undergo plastic deformation, which is then related to the yield stress of the material. The problem of indentation and its variants see many applications ranging from mining and petroleum industry, infrastructure industry, manufacturing, and biomedical sectors. Indentation has been extensively studied in metals, with accurate measurement of deformation parameters, stresses and comparison with analytical solutions. On the other hand, understanding of indentation in other class of solids such as cellular solids, porous solids, rocks, and soft solids is still nascent. In case of rocks, a comprehensive understanding of the indentation problem is very crucial because of the obvious applications in mining, petroleum and infrastructure sectors. The inherent porosity, the brittle nature of the rocks, adds to the complexity of indentation in these porous brittle solids. Various theoretical models with degrees of simplifying assumptions have been proposed to study the indentation in rocks. The most common model used in the study of indentation in rocks is a cavity expansion model, wherein a blunt indenter indenting into a rock is approximated with the expansion of cylindrical or spherical cavity in an elastic-plastic material. Complementary studies in understanding fracture initiation and propagation due to indentation has been largely based on the studies of traditional brittle materials such as glass."

"A large amount of platinum group metals (PGM) are used in automobile catalyst. It is important to recover the metals from wasted catalyst. Nomura and Kageyama (2013) suggested recovery process that PGM oxides were absorbed to perovskite-type oxide based on LaScO3. In their process, the PGM in wasted catalyst as absorbed to the perovskite-type oxide as PGM oxide. It has potential to each element in the process if the perovskite-type oxide is selected properly. In this study, the PGM oxide absorption properties of various perovskite-type oxides are investigated to develop a new recovery and separation process. The various perovskite-type oxide were synthesized with metallic platinum, palladium, rhodium at high temperature in air atmosphere. And the PGM contents in the perovskite-type oxide after the experiment are determined by chemical analysis. Some of them have the properties to absorb specific PGM oxide selectively. In addition, in order to increase the amount of absorption of PGM oxide and composition of the perovskite-type oxide experimental temperature was investigated. Then it is also found that doping another specific element to the perovskite-type oxide is effective to increase the amount of absorption of PGM oxide. Then a new recovery process of PGM from wasted automobile catalyst, in which PGM can be separate to each element, was designed.INTRODUCTIONA large amount of Platinum (Pt), Palladium (Pd), and Rhodium (Rh) are used in automobile catalysis (Figure 1) (Platinum, 2013). Natural supplies for these metals are limited and PGM mining can detrimental environmental impact. Therefore, the recycling of PGMs from wasted automobile catalysis is very important. The Rose process (Figure 2) was developed as a process to recover PGM from wasted automobile catalysis. In this process, the automobile catalysis is first crushed mechanically, and then extracting agent, copper (Cu), and flux are melted at high temperature. The mixture separates into a metal phase, (Cu alloy containing PGM) and slag. The PGM is enriched by oxidizing. Cu to Cu oxide. The PGM are then recovered and separated to each element in a wet process. However, it is hard to dissolve the PGM with acid because they are chemically stable and strong oxidation agent such as aqua regia is used. Moreover, to separate the PGM to each individual element, a solvent extraction process is required."

During the geological synthesis of the Réservoir Pipmuacan area (NTS 22E) by the Ministère des Ressources naturelles (Québec), several ilmenite-apatite occurrences, some well-known and some recently discovered, have been examined. These occurrences are hosted in the Lac-Saint-Jean and Labrieville AMCG anorthositic suites. The Lac-Saint-Jean Anorthositic Suite (1160-1140 Ma), composed of multiple intrusions covering an extensive surface area, is characterized by labradorite plagioclase. The Labrieville Anorthositic Suite (1010-1008 Ma) is characterized by andesine plagioclase. It was previously known as the Labrieville Anorthosite, which was composed of a small isolated pluton located east of the Lac-Saint-Jean Anorthositic Suite. However, new geochronological data and field observations indicate that the Labrieville Anorthositic Suite in fact includes several intrusive bodies, namely the La Hache Monzonite and the Mattawa Anorthosite. A series of major structures (Saint-Fulgence, Pipmuacan, and Chute-des-Passes deformation zones) and their conjugate faults played an important role in the emplacement of the Lac-Saint-Jean Anorthositic Suite. The Saint-Fulgence deformation zone appears to have been involved in the emplacement of the Labrieville Anorthositic Suite. Oxide mineralizations are abundant in both anorthositic suites. Ilmenite, magnetite (± titaniferous), and apatite assemblages are found mostly in the labradorite-type anorthosites, while hemo-ilmenite, magnetite and apatite assemblages are associated only with the andesine-type anorthosites. Field works has revealed ilmenite-apatite mineralizations in a variety of settings, with grades reaching 48% TiO2, 16.2% P2O5, and 71.7% Fe2O3 (tot). Numerous oxide-bearing gabbronorites, often accompanied by or located near massive apatite-oxide accumulations (nelsonites), were discovered. Among these oxide-rich zones, breccia zones with anorthosite enclaves in an oxide matrix (ilmenite-magnetiteapatite) have been observed. Locally, ilmenite-apatite mineralization occurs as cumulate concentrations in ultramafic rocks. Evidence has been observed for immiscible magmas, for magmas differentiated from a mangerite or jotunite parent, and even for late magmas differentiated from the anorthosite magma itself (apatite-bearing anorthosite). Finally, the northern part of the Lac-Saint-Jean Anorthositic Suite hosts sulfide and vanadium mineralizations associated with ilmenite-apatite enriched zones, with grades reaching 1.48% Cu, 1.22% Ni, 1.6% Cr2O5, 0.25% Co, and 0.52% V2O5.

"Sodium Isopropyl Xanthate is employed in a wide variety of sulphide flotation procedures due to the specificity over other xanthates and the cost savings over other sulphide collectors such as thionocarbamates, xanthogen formates and dithiophosphates. An investigation carried out by Tennants Research Technology Applications (TRTA), has produced a chemically enhanced SIPX that has shown all the advantages of normal SIPX along with improved recoveries.Currently, FLEX 31 is manufactured at the Prospec Chemicals xanthate plant in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada. Prospec, founded in 1983, produces approximately 4500 tonnes of xanthates per year and is presently undergoing expansion to produce approximately 6000 tonnes. The proprietary process for FLEX 31 is a new addition to plant operations that include the production of xanthates, thionocarbamates and xanthogen formates.This paper will cover the testwork on the zinc flotation circuit at the Louvicourt Mine in Val d'Or, Quebec. This testwork indicated that FLEX 31 could replace SIPX due to the ability of the FLEX to improve zinc flotation kinetics without adversely affecting final concentrate grade. FLEX has presently replaced SIPX in the zinc circuit at Louvicourt.BackgroundThe Louvicourt deposit is hosted by greenschist facies Archean volcanic rocks located in the southeast portion of the Abitibi Greenstone Belt. In the Val d'Or area, the volcanic rocks form an east-west striking, steeply dipping and south-facing sequence composed of thick mafic and ultramafic flows of the Lower Malartic Group.The joint venture has three partners-Aur Louvicourt Inc. (30%), Novicourt Inc. (45%) and Teck Corp (25%). Aur Resources holds 30% interest through Aur Louvicourt, a wholly owned subsidiary and is the operator of the project. Novicourt Inc. is 60.9% held by Noranda.Approximately 75% to 85% of Louvicourt's revenue comes from the sale of copper; 10% from gold (in the copper concentrate); 7% from zinc and 3% from silver (also in the copper concentrate) The copper at Louvicourt is fairly ""fast floating"". About 60% of the copper in the ore can be concentrated in the first flotation cells with feed grades of approximately 4% copper.The initial testwork and pilot trials had indicated that it would be difficult to achieve zinc grades over 52% and recoveries would have to be kept at a level amenable to salable concentrate grades. The actual mill results, with a fine regrind, achieved zinc grades of 55% to 56% at about 75% recovery."

Anode or fire refining is the final pyrometallurgical step in the production of copper anode. Part of this process purifies liquid copper by reducing its dissolved oxygen with a natural gas-steam mixture. Until now there have been no transient models of this process coupling the injected gas jet mass transport with its chemical reactions. A transient, 1D flow, chemical reaction model was made to estimate the time-dependent behavior of anode copper composition, soot formation, and the transient gas jet composition along its height. Model estimates were made for reduction rate, soot emission rate, and exergy loss and destruction distributions for two melt temperatures and a range of steam addition rates. It was found that increases to melt temperature and steam addition rate increased reduction rate and decreased soot emission, while having little effect on exergetic performance. Estimates for reduction histories were compared to industrial data. INTRODUCTION Anode/fire refining is the final pyrometallurgical step in the production of copper anodes; it is essential for removing dissolved gases which cause porosity in cast anodes. Despite its significance, the open literature appears devoid of any transient models of the entire process; furthermore, there are very little published process data with which to validate any models made. This dual dearth of modelling work and process data inhibits studies of the tradeoffs between process and performance changes, desirable for decreasing reduction time and soot formation as well as quantifying changes in the exergy losses and destructions of the process. This work introduces a reduced-order, transient model of reduction during fire refining, examines performance trends with operating conditions, and compares model estimates with industrial data. Overview of anode refining The purpose of anode refining is to produce liquid copper which can be cast with minimal gas porosity, which disrupts the downstream electrorefining process. Dissolved sulfur is removed first, then oxygen, by reactions with different injected gases. The removal of oxygen (the reduction step) is the subject of this proceeding and is effected by the bubbling of natural gas, typically mixed with steam, through the melt from tuyeres. A typical refining run reduces dissolved oxygen from 3000 ppm to 300 ppm in 2–3 hours (Schlesinger, King, Sole, & Davenport, 2011). The refined copper is then cast as anodes. Figure 1 shows a schematic of the furnace vessel.
