"With Inco recording record profits over the past year, most people have forgotten the painful years of the last recession/depression when Inco was losing up to a million dollars a day for a short period . While high nickel prices have contributed to the exceptional recent profits, the real achievements stem from the tremendous advances in productivity and cost improvements that make Inco one of the lowest cost nickel producers.Some of the major advances in productivity have occurred in the mines. The establishment of Mining Research Departments in both Thompson and Copper Cliff in 1979/80 provided the stimulus and the opportunity to dedicate personnel to specific research projects, on a full-time basis; and more particularly to concentrate on the efficiency of the total mine system. The Copper Cliff North Mine was brought back into production as a research mine dedicated to the development and testing of new mining methods and equipment. A shop facility known as the ""Murray Shop"" was set up as the centre of innovation for the development and construction of prototype equipment required for new bulk mining methods. While other expenditures were being curtailed , investment in mining research was being increased. An early success was an ""in the hole"" drill that could be broken down into small components to access even the remotest sectors of a mine to convert labour intensive undercut-and-fill mining to "" vertical crater retreat "" , VCR, bulk mining. A new mine manufacturing company-Continuous Mining Systems-was incorporated with the objective of building innovative mining equipment, with strong focus on automated continuous sytems. Continuous Mining Systems has now grown to a $25 million per year business. With these synergistic thrusts, the VCR bulk mining method was implemented in all of the Ontario Division mines, raising the percentage of ore mined by bulk mining techniques from 320/0 in 1981 to over 90% today. Coupled with re-designed job responsibilities, sup- ported by appropriate training, mine productivity more than doubled. It was discovered that VCR mining could be adapted to the narrower Thompson mine ores with identical improvements in productivity. Development of the Thompson Open Pit North had an additional favourable impact on production cost s in Thompson. The timing of the open pit development could not have been better. It permitted Inco to rapidly increase production at high productivity and low cost, in years of record demand and prices."

Low-grade copper concentrates (with copper content less than 20%) often contain impurities such as arsenic, zinc, lead, mercury, antimony and bismuth. The pyrometallurgical treatment of such concentrates is associated with several problems, which will ultimately affect the cost and the quality of copper cathodes as well as by-products. SRC Hydrometallurgy proposed a complex hydrometallurgical technology which allows the removal of impurities and the enrichment of low-grade copper concentrates to a quality which will be more suitable for pyrometallurgical processing. Laboratory batch tests and pilot plant results for the pressure leaching steps are shown in this paper. The key parameters of the leaching steps were determined and optimized. The quality of possible by-products were also determined. The developed flowsheet includes two pressure leaching steps: pressure oxidation (POX) and hydrothermal alteration (HTA). Both operations are carried out at 170°C with subsequent flotation of POX and HTA residues and recovery of copper, zinc and lead into separate concentrates for further processing. The development of the flowsheet was based on the Balkhash Zinc Plant (Balkhash, Kazakhstan), which had been non-operational since 2009. The developed flowsheet for processing of low-grade concentrates will utilize 80% of the existing equipment of the Balkhash Zinc Plant, thus leading to a significant reduction in required capital expenditure. INTRODUCTION As the age of copper mining operations advance, copper grades continue to diminish and impurity levels increase. Therefore, copper producers are forced to look for new innovative hydrometallurgical technologies which are able to handle low-grade raw materials and solve problems associated with impurities in an economically justifiable way. New technologies allow to extract valuable components selectively and to process low-grade concentrates which had previously been marked as non-technological and economically unviable. Hydrometallurgical technologies for processing of copper-containing materials can be divided into two main categories: chloride and sulfate (atmospheric, autoclave and bacterial) based technologies. Since the 1970s, many autoclave techniques for the processing of copper-containing materials have been developed and implemented (Naboichenko, 2002; Dreisinger, 2005; Habashi, 2009; Shneerson, 2011). The mineralogical composition of the ore (or concentrates), geographical location of the deposit, distance from industrial areas, availability of existing treatment facilities, availability of skilled labor, cost of electricity and cost of neutralization are some of the factors which are usually considered when the appropriate technology is selected (Halbe, 2002).

The Australian Government?s Energy Efficiency Opportunities (EEO) program launched in 2006 obliges companies that use more than 0.5 PJ (petajoule) or roughly 139 GWh (gigawatt hour) per year to conduct an energy assessment in order to identify measures to improve energy efficiency. The opportunities identified by the mining sector were assembled in the Mining Significant Opportunities Register that permitted companies not yet embracing and adopting an energy management program to see what those who are, were doing and how much energy was saved, and helps disseminate best practice. The measures can be filtered by company, year, category or equipment type. The creation of a central repository of energy efficiency initiatives is valuable but this existing database could be improved; fields identifying the energy and carbon emission savings associated with a given initiative are a surprising omission. Consequently it does not permit the relative effectiveness of different measures for energy and carbon reductions to be readily assessed. A review of energy management efforts implemented in the mining industry, published in peer reviewed journals, corporate sustainability reports or industry publications during the last 40 years has revealed many examples of best practice. However, the lack of a standardized reporting framework in any of these sources has made it difficult to assess the effectiveness and compare the adopted energy management measures ? just as is the case with the Australian register. In an attempt to address these issues, an improved database structure has been created for energy management measures from the mining industry which identifies energy and financial savings arising from energy management initiatives, classifies applications to specific processes or equipment, and recognizes leaders in the mining industry with respect to energy management. The structure of the register includes the key data relevant to energy management in mining that is absent in the Australian version. The mining industry energy management database has been made available in the public domain where stakeholders can examine the best practice examples. Mining energy champions may also contribute to the register by providing case studies; a standardized entry template affords a quality assurance dimension that is absent in other reporting initiatives. Adoption of this database with its standardized reporting mechanism will enhance transparency of the mining industry in energy matters and help it maintain its social license to operate.

"In high mountainous regions, deep-seated rock slides are often observed in foliated metamorphic rocks such as paragneisses, micaschists and phyllites. Given that comprehensive investigations of deepseated rock slides are extraordinary costly and therefore are rare, most studies are related to investigations in the surroundings of infrastructures and human settlements. In the framework of this study there is an excellent opportunity to gain new insights in the fundamental processes and mechanisms of slowly moving deep-seated rock slides from a case study in the surrounding of a large dam reservoir in Austria. New fundamentals for comprehensive slope stability analyses and hazard assessments and sound prognoses focussing on the long-term stability and deformation behaviour of slopes under changing boundary conditions (e.g. impounding of a reservoir) and/or concepts for mitigation measures can be obtained. Within this contribution, geological field surveys, deformation monitoring, geophysical and drilling data were analysed and presented. Based on the compiled and analysed data, some key-properties of the rock slide will be presented, whereby special attention will be given on the geometry and internal structure, the slope kinematics, as well as hydrogeological and geomechanical aspects.INTRODUCTIONIn high mountainous regions, deep-seated rock slides are often encountered in highly foliated metamorphic rocks such as paragneisses, micaschists and phyllites (Agliardi et al. 2012). Critical situations may occur when deep-seated rock slides fail in a rapid manner characterised by very high sliding velocities, and/or when they develop into long run-out rock avalanches. However, many rock slides in foliated crystalline rock masses either do not move at high velocities nor do they accelerate seriously and form extremely rapid slides. Displacement rates in the range of a few millimetres or centimetres per year are common for this type of rock slide (Bonzanigo et al. 2007, Tentschert 1998, Watson et al. 2007). Nevertheless, some case studies show an activity behaviour characterised by acceleration phases reaching velocities of even metres per day. However a slope collapse is not expected and these slopes decelerate to much lower base activities. The trigger for these phases can be manifold and include heavy rainfall and snow melt, initial reservoir impounding and water level fluctuations, changes in the slope’s equilibrium state due to antecedent slow deformation processes, ongoing erosion processes along the toe of the slope, and others (Zangerl et al. 2010)."

"In this paper we present a new method for studying the detachment of particles from bubbles in a rotating turbulent eddy. The eddy is formed in a wall cavity in a two-dimensional water tunnel with transparent walls. When water flows through the tunnel, a vortical flow field develops in the cavity. The properties of the eddy can be modulated by changing the free-stream velocity of the water in the tunnel. Bubbles are pre-loaded with one or more particles in a fluidized bed flotation device located beneath the vortex cavity. Loaded bubbles are released one at a time into the cavity, and the motion of the bubbleparticle aggregate is studied using a high-speed video camera. The diameters of the particles and the bubbles, and the number of particles initially attached to the bubble, can be varied. The trajectories taken by the bubbles are quite complicated. In some cases, the bubble moves to the centre of the eddy, and particles rotate around its axis. If the rotational speed is sufficient, particles may detach due to centrifugal force. However, other modes were observed, including inertial detachment due to rapid changes in direction of the surface of the bubble, because of changes in trajectory of the bubble as a whole, or because of pulsations and oscillations of the bubble surface. Clusters of bubbles held together by particles were seen to form and reform. In the traditional explanation for the detachment of particles in flotation cells, it is assumed that particles detach from bubbles rotating in an eddy due to centrifugal force (Schulze, 1977). Although the conditions assumed in Schulze's theory may exist, it is only one of a range of phenomena that can lead to the detachment of particles from bubbles in a turbulent vortex.INTRODUCTIONThe recovery of particles by flotation methods is dependent on the particle size. The recovery in the existing flotation machines reaches a peak for particle size, typically in the range of 20 to 100 µm. This size range varies as a function of the particle’s properties (type and composites). For coarser particles, the recovery drops very quickly (Gaudin, Groh & Henderson, 1931; Jowett, 1980). If the upper size limit can be increased for flotation, dramatic savings in the grinding energy can be achieved."

Goldex Mine is an underground mine located near the town of Val-d?Or. Multiple innovations were required to work the mine. Due to its low grade, it was important to develop a bulk mining method to economically extract the ore. The method used is a combination between shrinkage stope and long hole stope methods. This modified method is more than adequate; however, all of the ore body must be liberated in a very short period of time. Therefore, to bring down 23 Mt of ore, large blasts up to 1.8 Mt are required. The situation is also complicated by the fact that the mine is located in a residential area. No less that 40 homes are built within a 1 km radius of the mine site. In addition to managing mass blasts, means must also be found to mitigate the vibrations produced by the blast to diminish the disturbance to the neighbourhood. Therefore, the mine used numerous tools to properly plan the blasts and reduce the impacts. A program to control vibrations was one of the first tools put in place. The program?s aim was to draw up an action plan to ensure a follow-up of the homes by inspecting them. The second tool was to develop a methodology to plot a reliable attenuation curve and to adequately determine the maximum charge weight for each blast. Finally, effective communication tools were developed to inform the neighbourhood. There was a huge amount of work to be done in relation to the bench. Reliable and fast loading techniques had to be found to load large blasts in a very short period of time. Adequate logistics had to be developed to send underground more than 20,000 kg of emulsion per day while performing the daily underground operations. Technology had to be developed to adapt the i-kon electronic blasting system to large blasts. Since the control of the charges was the major factor to reduce surface vibrations, it was important to employ loading techniques that would permit decking of the long holes to reduce the charge weight per delays without adversely affecting the loading. All of this work requires an enormous amount of energy but also close collaboration between the different stakeholders (various departments, suppliers and consultants).

"The decision to proceed with mine decommissioning, generally involves a number of complex and independent factors. These factors, including potential for re-opening, legal requirements, contingent liability, asset depreciation, due diligence, and public relations are discussed in the context of the financial implications on a net-present- value basis. It is concluded that the decision to delay mine decommissioning is commonly not in the best financial interests of the mine operator. Some measures to reduce decommissioning costs and expedite the process are presented.IntroductionThe primary audience for this paper is mining executives, although it should be of interest to all professionals involved in the planning and carrying out of mine decommissioning. Historically, mines were abandoned, not decommissioned. Then, as decommissioning became required, it was assumed that salvage revenue would pay for decommissioning. During the I980s, it became apparent that mine decommissioning costs would exceed salvage revenue for nearly all sites, and that a substantial net cost for decommissioning would be realized for some sites. Throughout this period, the approach to decommissioning has evolved through the sequential addition of measures to meet the increasing regulatory burden. This has resulted in a process in which the elements of decommissioning may not be optimized with respect to each other for the most favourable net present value to the corporation. Additional considerations which are not specific to mine decommissioning, such as environmental policy, due diligence and public relations, may now come to bear on the decision-making process.This paper addresses the issue of mine decommissioning as a three-step process. The first step involves identification and evaluation of all of the issues that relate to mine closure, the most importantof which is the potential for re-opening of a mine. Assuming that it is decided that a mine is unlikely to re-open, the second step is to determine when to carry out the decommissioning work. This aspect is examined through a net present value (NPV) approach. Finally, details regarding who does the work and how the various tasks are divided up must be resolved.Every mine is a unique concentration of minerals at some specific location, hence the development, operation and closure of a given mine must be regarded as a special case. Superimposed on the site-specific considerations are the size, history and financial status of the associated corporation."

In order to remain competitive the mining industry must keep up with changes in technology. Many innovative technologies from the mining perspective are commonplace in other industries. A ?Global? review of technologies will often reveal existing technologies that can be innovatively applied in the mining industry. Industries, which are rife with proven solutions include, medicine, biotechnology, security, manufacturing, telecommunications, etc. This paper addresses the communications aspect of mining where greater productivity, lower costs and the ability to quickly react to mining related events is obtained through an increase in remote monitoring and operating control. A review of the communications systems in place globally reveals technologies that, with minimal modification, can be immediately applied to the mining environment. We discuss the concept, advantages and implementation of existing communications technology from an industry that is not usually associated with the mining industry. This technology will form the basis of a solid platform on which can be built a state-of-the-art process monitoring, control, and communication system. This lays the groundwork for providing one solution to the underground mining industry?s most difficult problem, establishing a reliable, maintainable and cost-effective underground bi-directional wired/wireless data, video and analog communications system. We need look no further than our own doorsteps to find such a solution. The cable that you see coming from the simple green or brown box on the boulevard into your home contains hundreds of television broadcast channels, FM radio channels and data channels. And if you have a set-top box, you are in control of it all. The Cable Television Broadcast Distribution System suppliers of today are at the leading edge of converging all the different methods of communications onto a common carrier, coaxial cable or fibre optic cable. There is no fundamental difference between providing a reliable communications network to a city/neighbourhood/home/personal computer than there is to a mining operation/underground level/equipment or person. The principle is the same. Only the application is different. Realizing this, we can capitalize on the efforts of other industrial sectors, to solve our communications problem. Where else can you find a solution to a problem that is mature, having been developed with the input of thousands of engineers, and having hundreds of millions of dollars spent on research and development, manufacturing, distribution, global presence and engineering support?

Chalcopyrite is by far the most abundant copper sulphide on Earth, but it has proved to be problematic in its processing by leaching, mainly related to its refractory nature, slow kinetic rates of dissolution and the formation of an inhibiting product layer on its surface during leaching. This study is focussed on the electrochemistry of chalcopyrite dissolution in acidic chloride system, which has recently gained attention as a feasible alternative to conventional sulphate media for chalcopyrite leaching. It is well understood that chalcopyrite dissolution from mineral grains depends strongly on the solution redox potential at the mineral surface as well as the composition of the product layer that may form on its surface. The chloride ions in solution support the Cu(II)/Cu(I) couple as the primary oxidant, as they can form complexes with the cuprous ions formed, increasing the dissolution rate. Additionally, these ions increase the potential range where chalcopyrite can be oxidized. The chemical reaction that occurs on the surface of chalcopyrite in chloride solutions in the presence of cupric ions will be characterized and the coulometry of the reaction will be reported to understand what is happening on the surface of chalcopyrite. Electrochemical experiments have been carried out to investigate the behaviour of mixed potential by open circuit potential (OCP) measurement for 30 minutes using sulphuric acid at pH 1 under nitrogen at 25⁰ C. The effect of chloride was analysed at 0, 20, 50 and 100 g/L and cupric ions from 0 to 50 g/L. The potentials obtained were then used to carry out chronoamperometry tests for a period of 30 minutes in absence of cupric ions. The mixed potential did not show a significant difference with an increase in cupric concentrations in the absence of chloride. Increased mixed potentials and current densities were observed at higher chloride and cupric concentrations. Chronoamperometry tests at those potentials were used to construct a voltammogram trace which has the same trend as a normal cyclic voltammogram but with much lower current densities. INTRODUCTION As a result of the depletion of copper oxides, the leaching of copper sulphide minerals has become the focus of many studies. Chalcopyrite, (CuFeS2) which is the most abundant of copper minerals, has proved to be challenging to process via hydrometallurgy, mainly related to its refractory nature, slow kinetic rates of dissolution and the formation of an inhibiting product layer on its surface, during leaching.

This paper looks briefly at some of the agreements and types of royalties that may be met during exploration activities, but does not go into details relating to them. Agreements can either make or break a deal or relationship. A well drafted, comprehensive and fair agreement can create good relations and trust among the parties and will go a long way towards making a deal work. In the best of all worlds the agreement will be put away and not need to be referred to after it has been signed (but it will be there if needed to sort out potential problems). On the other hand, a poorly drafted agreement or one that is inappropriate to the circumstances or unfair to one of the parties can break a deal and end up with the parties facing each other in that expensive, unproductive and time-consuming occupation ? a lawsuit. Accordingly, it is advisable to involve professional advisers with any agreement. The straightforward one may involve no more that a read through whereas the more complex agreement will require considerable involvement. There is, however, one rule for every explorationist to remember: a professional adviser is only an adviser. His responsibility is to make sure that you have the necessary information to make a reasoned decision but the decision is yours, not the adviser?s. It is your deal, you are going to have to live with it, and it is inappropriate for an adviser to introduce new concepts or amend negotiated ones without your specific instructions. Mineral exploration agreements, although basically option, acquisition and joint participation agreements, come in all the shapes and forms, appropriate to give effect to the endless variety of deals negotiated by the ever-active minds of explorationists. You will note the reference to "joint participation agreements" rather than "joint venture agreements". The latter term was purposely avoided because, with the current activity of explorationists from common law jurisdictions in civil law jurisdictions, it has become necessary for the explorationist to become familiar with corporations and shareholders agreements. As most of you are no doubt aware, under the civil law system a joint venture is normally not recognized as a legal entity and, therefore, joint participation in projects is usually by way of corporations.

Many ideas, tools, technologies, and methodologies are believed to have staked their claims on the future of mining. For example, automation is strongly positioned as the platform within which mining will be practiced. A subset of automation ? intelligent mining ? will add some smart interactions between machines, technologies, the rock, and the environment. The future also calls for an improved approach to sustainability and corporate social responsibility. Mines of the future are dreamed of to be more ethical and more balanced. They will boast optimized designs, integrated value and supply chains, produce less waste, recycle and reuse, and will require less energy to operate. Then, what about the people that will operate this optimized ecosystem? How is the education system teaching the operators of the mines of the future? What kind of a future should mining education foresee to prepare the workers appropriately? In recent years, the shortage of skilled labor for mines around the world has created a tough competition to attract, retain, and train the very people without whom mining will cease to exist. In Australia, Canada, and the United States in particular, the war for talent has resulted in higher-than-usual labour costs. Such costs have dented the unit costs of many mining businesses. Concomitantly, mining contractors? and consultants? prices have increased to reflect the escalation of labour costs across the value chain. From labourers to engineers, from juniors to seasoned professionals, the increase in compensation is unprecedented. Yet, the shortage is still hurting the industry, and the high calibre candidates continue to be rare gems. The industry has been implementing aggressive solutions that include the increased hiring of skilled immigrants, the training and recruitment of minorities, and the retaining of near-retirement experienced employees. Public relation campaigns about the benefits of embracing careers in mining are also common. The CIM has also devoted a ?M4S? section to its pan-Canada meetings to educate the public, especially the youth, about the importance of the mining industry for Canada. Moreover, mining associations and universities are enticing students? enrolment through scholarships and financial support. Still, the balance between quantity and quality of workers can be discussed. This paper intends to discuss the present state of mining education as an essential part of the future of mining. The authors brush the picture of the education of miners, technicians, and engineers, against the backdrop of the technology-advanced mines of the future.

The primary motivation underlying the proposal of polygeneration systems for mine sites is to increase the efficient use of natural resources by combining different technologies and energy resources while satisfying energy service demands. For many mineral producers, particularly in Canada?s mining extremes of climate and depth, energy in support of mineral production can be the second largest cost centre after labour. A generic methodology is proposed for the design of energy supply systems in mine sites, based on a search for the minimum discounted cost of energy supplied for all feasible different plant configurations. These configurations can be represented within a connectivity matrix which corresponds to a network representation. A Mixed Integer Programming formulation is set out for the multiperiod synthesis and operational planning problem. This is characterized by i) binary variables for the selection of technologies, ii) integer variables for the determination of the number of units installed, and iii) by continuous variables for the representation of energy and economic flows. Through the integration of particular energy supply strategies matching specific mine circumstances (on-grid, remote, degree days, etc) and consideration of technologies that improve energy efficiency, hitherto not considered new technologies and demand management systems or new perspectives on optimal mine site energy supply can be investigated. Some of these investigations identify the economic conditions through which biomass energy feedstocks should be used, for direct heat production, for gasification and providing for Fischer-Tropsch syndiesel manufacture. As well as integrating demand from mobile diesel-fuelled plant into an optimization procedure that hitherto has only been considered for static energy production and consumption plant, this analysis shows how the techniques can be used to explore economic conditions of threshold prices for biomass (purpose-grown biomass and peat are considered herein) and trucked-in diesel. The methodology also allows for electricity and syngas storage and diesel and biomass bunkering. Within the paper the energy demands for a remote, open pit mining operation located in Northern Ontario are considered as a case study to illustrate the technique and investigations. As expected, for mines close to electricity, natural gas, and diesel distribution infrastructures, the optimal choice is to connect. When a constraint is applied specifying that connection is not possible, as would be for the case exemplified, the optimal choice includes some of the more exotic options for mine site energy supply.

One of the fundamental trade-offs for copper concentrators is between grinding circuit product size and copper recovery. The capital and operating cost savings and throughput increases for a coarser grind should be evaluated against potential recovery reductions. Other benefits of coarser grinds, such as GHG emissions reductions and favourable effects on tailings and water management should also be considered. This paper assesses the formation of laboratory and pilot test programs, design of process flowsheets, equipment selection, and evaluation methods to determine the most appropriate and economical grind size for a given deposit. The paper will include an evaluation of case studies. INTRODUCTION The majority of the world’s mined copper comes from sulphide deposits, which are mostly processed using crushing, grinding, flotation and dewatering flowsheets to produce copper-bearing concentrates for smelting. Ores must be ground to a sufficiently fine size to achieve an acceptable level of liberation to allow both high recovery of copper and valuable by-product minerals while efficiently rejecting gangue to tailings. Therefore, a key design parameter in process plant design is the grind size of the flotation feed. Copper concentrators use a variety of grind size targets that depend on various factors, including ore mineralogy and the grain sizes of valuable and gangue minerals; the sensitivity of valuable mineral recoveries in the rougher flotation stages to grind size, ore hardness; electricity costs; and mining vs. processing throughput constraints. Typically, copper and by-product recovery increase as grind size is reduced, which can improve revenue, but finer grinds increase power and grinding media operating costs and may have implications for tailings management. This paper explores the trade-offs that should be assessed in determining the optimum grind size, and to answer the question if coarser grinds are worthwhile. METALLURGICAL AND FLOWSHEET FACTORS Recovery-by-size behaviour of sulphide-bearing particles In base metals sulphide flotation, it is typical that flotation recoveries vary by particle size. Metal sulphide particles rendered hydrophobic by collector in intermediate size ranges (e.g. 10 to 100 um) usually show very high recoveries, often approaching 100%. Recovery usually falls away in finer size fractions (<10 um) as fine particles have little inertia and can move around bubbles without colliding and attaching to them. Coarser particles (>100 um) are susceptible to particle-bubble detachment and dropback (Jameson, 2019).

"As has been noted on numerous occasions, the vertical shafts being sunk around the world are all tending to get deeper as we seek to take advantage of higher grades of minerals which can sometimes be found at greater depths. One of the challenges with these deeper shafts is the requirement to supply services to the mine’s operations at depth as well as the requirement to dewater the mine. Both the supply of water and the dewatering of mines is generally done using piping. With the greater shaft depths, this piping is now required to contain higher pressures as well as to accommodate changes in temperature resulting from normal mine operations. This paper will discuss the requirements for the design of high pressure piping in deep vertical shafts. The discussion will start with the general definition of the systems and the detailed design requirement. Once this is clearly outlined, we will discuss the options available for fulfilling these requirement as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each of the systems. We will finish with the installation recommendations and provide a basis for the maintenance of these systems. INTRODUCTION Piping in vertical shafts is used to provide a number of services in underground workings. These services vary depending on geographical location and the type of the ore body which is being mined. For example, in the Zambian Copper mines, one of the largest requirements for in shaft piping is for dewatering. Similarly in the Gold deposits in the West Wits basin as well as the deep level Copper deposits in Arizona, one of the largest uses for the piping is the supply of a cooling medium to underground workings to create a safe working environment (this can in the form of water or of glycol depending on the application). In South Africa, systems were installed which used the hydrostatic head which is generated from supplying chilled water to mines whose depths exceeded 2,000 m below surface. This chilled water was supplied as a closed system, allowing for high pressures to be generated which was then used to supply useful work (for example, Rock Drills, Face Cleaning and other ancillary services) whose power was traditionally supplied by compressed air or electricity. This system was initially researched by Chamber of Mine in South Africa. The design pressure range of these systems is 14 MPa to 18 MPa."

Process control, mine-to-mill optimization, and other mining operations depend on having robust, comprehensive mineralogical and chemical characterization. However, current characterization methods rely primarily on analyzing samples from trenches, channels, blast holes, and drill holes and interpolating between them, and are not always sensitive to some minerals (such as clays) that cause major problems for mining and mineral processing. Continuous characterization is possible with techniques such as hyperspectral remote sensing, which measures reflectance or absorption of light in the visible to near infrared (VNIR) and short-wave infrared (SWIR) regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Absorption and reflectance features are characteristic of different chemical bond types, so each spectrum corresponds to a different mineral or material. In remote sensing, each pixel in the scanned area has both a location and a spectrum. This makes hyperspectral remote sensing potentially useful for characterizing mine site materials. In this study, we tested a hyperspectral remote sensing system as a method of characterizing the mineralogy and material types at mine and metallurgical sites. Our test site was a small open-pit copper mine and leach operation in the southwestern U.S. We scanned mine highwalls, dump piles, leach pads, and nearby rock outcrops with drone- and tripod-mounted VNIR-SWIR spectrometers. We collected ground-truth data through geologic mapping, sampling, and spot analyses with a portable short-wave SWIR instrument. The results show that the hyperspectral remote sensing system that we tested is capable of distinguishing the types and distribution of spectrally active minerals and other materials in diverse mining settings, including showing wet and dry areas of leach pads; clay and carbonate type and distribution on mine highwalls, leach pads, dumps, and rock outcrops; plant type and distribution; fault zones, bedding planes, and other geological features; and qualitative spectral matches between dump piles and areas of the mine highwalls. Hyperspectral sensing proved particularly sensitive to the presence and type of clay and carbonate minerals, which cause geotechnical and metallurgical problems such as highwall failure, gangue acid consumption, and flotation sliming. Examples will be presented and discussed at the conference. Areas of continuing research include automating and streamlining the data reduction process, integrating hyperspectral data with block modeling and mine planning software, and testing the results of hyperspectral sensing in different geological environments.

PROBABLY the first flotation mill for treating molybdenite ores was put into operation .in Norway during 1913, when the writer was employed to introduce and apply the Elmore vacuum flotation process at a mine in southern Norway. These operations proved successful and led to other similar installations in that country. It remained, however, for Norwegian engineers themselves to iron out their difficulties and establish the molybdenum industry on a basis which ultimately attained world importance. Just as today, an urgent demand for molybdenum arose during the world war of 1914-18. By 1916, many molybdenite properties were in operation in Canada and several small concentrating mills were under construction. At one of these, in the Ottawa Valley district, the opportunity came for applying the Elmore vacuum flotation process, using a flow-sheet similar to that adopted in Norway. Later, as one of the staff of the General Engineering Company, who had already developed a highly efficient flowsheet for treating molybdenite ores, using the Callow pneumatic flotation process, the writer devoted considerable time to research work and investigations on a number of molybdenite projects and deposits in eastern Canada. The bulk of Canada&apos;s production of molybdenite was coming at that time from the Moss mine at Quyon, Que., where concentration of the ore was effected by water-film flotation. It is of interest to note that this process, based on the principle of surface tension, had been developed and introduced by the late Henry E. Wood, of Denver, Colorado- one of the original owners of the Moss mine-at the time he was investigating the Elmore vacuum process in his Denver plant. The process, with certain modifications, was used at several other properties in eastern Canada, and notably in the ore dressing laboratories of the Department of Mines at Ottawa and in a plant at Renfrew, Ont., in both of which ore from deposits in various parts of Canada was treated, with recovery of very appreciable amounts o much needed molybdenite. During the summer of 1917, the water-film flotation mill at the Moss mine was dismantled and the plant was re-modelled by the General Engineering Company to include the Callow system. This installation, using improved flotation methods, was highly successful both as to recovery and grade of concentrate, and proved a decided advance in molybdenite concentration, a recovery of upwards of 90 per cent being obtained, with a concentrate grading over 90 percent MoS2.

"This paper highlights the results of collaboration between geology, mining and mineral processing teams during the restart of the North American Lithium Project, located near La Corne, Quebec, Canada. This collaboration was central in ensuring a cross discipline harmonization of design parameters and key inputs, all of which allowed for the development of an optimized life of mine plan suited to the particular needs of the operation.INTRODUCTION In July 2016, North American Lithium Inc. (NAL) began the process of restarting operations at the former Quebec Lithium Mine, located in the municipality of La Corne, Quebec, Canada. The North American Lithium Project (the Project) as it is known today, is the latest chapter in the history of this property. In order to provide a robust foundation for the project, multidisciplinary collaboration was instituted between the geology, mining and metallurgy teams. Despite the intrinsic link between these departments, in many instances their work is completed separate from one another; in silos. This collaboration highlighted specific drivers in the mining value chain that could be exploited to ensure that a saleable product could be produced effectively. This paper explores some of the concepts and strategies that were developed during the feasibility study that supported the project restart (excerpts from the study technical report have been used throughout this paper). PROJECT HISTORY In 1942, prospectors identified the presence of numerous spodumene-bearing pegmatite dykes on the Property. This led to additional interest and exploration drilling campaigns. In 1955, Quebec Lithium Corp. (QLC), who had acquired the property, began construction of an underground mine with mill facilities located on the surface. Operations began the following year at a production rate of 1,100 tonnes per day. A historical cross-section view of the underground mine is shown in Figure 1. In 1959, QLC began the construction of an on-site lithium refinery to produce lithium hydroxide. The refinery was finally operational by 1963. Mining and processing operations continued until 1966 when activities were halted due to a labour dispute. The property was sold and a few years later attempts to resume production were unsuccessful. Property ownership changed several times again until being acquired by Cambior in 1987. In the early 1990’s the existing mine and mill facilities were sold and the mine site rehabilitated"

Or, au cours de ces dernières années, le nombre de ces découvertes a fortement diminué dans les territoires classiquement explorés, entraînant une recrudescence de l?exploration dans les terrains géologiques de grade métamorphique élevé (e.g., Province de Grenville, Grand Nord du Québec). Ces derniers ont été traditionnellement considérés comme stériles à cause (i) de la monotonie apparente des gneiss qui les composent, (ii) de la difficulté d?identifier leurs protolites, (iii) des changements importants dans l?apparence des gîtes recherchés reliés au fort degré de déformation et de métamorphisme et (iv) des théories qui prônent un lessivage important des cations et des métaux d?intérêt économique par les processus de déshydratation des roches lors du métamorphisme régional (Weaver et Tarney, 1985; Vokes, 2000). Cependant, l?avancée des connaissances dans la compréhension des gîtes métallifères et de leurs terrains hôtes gneissiques intensément métamorphisés, montre que les systèmes géochimiques des roches altérées demeurent robustes (p. ex. ; Trägårdh, 1991; Craig et Vokes, 1993; Geringer et al., 1994; Schandl et al., 1995; Zaleski et Peterson, 1995; Vokes, 2000; Blein et al., 2003, sous presse). Bien sûr, les sulfures peuvent être localement remobilisés et même fondre, mais cette remobilisation n?implique pas forcément la disparition du gîte hôte (Williams, 1990) et peut s?avérer, bien au contraire, bénéfique pour la rentabilité d?un gîte en augmentant sa teneur en minerais (Marshall et al., 2000). Jusqu?à présent, dans les terrains métamorphiques, les contextes sédimentaires et plutoniques ont été reconnus et respectivement explorés pour les gîtes de type SEDEX et les gîtes magmatiques de Ni-Cu. L?étude de gîtes de métaux de base et précieux intensément métamorphisés (faciès des granulites) et leur comparaison avec des gîtes équivalents peu on non métamorphisés a permis d?établir, au cours des dernières décennies, des outils pour l?exploration des terrains de haut-grade métamorphique (Vokes, 1991, 2000; Slack et al., 1993; Spry et al., 2000). Ces outils sont basés sur la reconnaissance de roches diagnostiques d?une circulation ou d?une exhalation de fluides hydrothermaux telles que les méta-exhalites (formation de fer, coticules, tourmalinites, roches riches en quartz-gahnite, en apatite, en barite ou en staurolite zincifère) (Spry, 2000; Spry et al., 2000). Ils sont utilisés constamment dans les ceintures supracrustales riches en roches métasédimentaires.

"This paper describes a guidance system for autonomous underground mining vehicles, which does not require any infrastructure or inertial positioning systems to aid the guidance process.BackgroundINCO Limited mines approximately ten million tons per annum through 12 operating mines in the Sudbury, Ontario, area (Fig. 1). With challenges from operating in a cyclical marketplace as well as new technologies making alternative nickel ores more competitive to refine, the Mines Research department embarked on a strategy that pointed toward automation as a tool to help the company become even more economical in mining.The mining industry has been looking for ways and means to mine orebodies more and more inexpensively. Automation and the lessons learned from manufacturing had a great influence in the direction of research at INCO Limited over the past ten years. Guidance systems have evolved over the years but the majority of commercially available systems rely on some form of infrastructure. This, in part, has caused some resistance from operators to install and maintain automated or semi-automated systems for guidance of underground machinery.Internal industrial studies cited travel time to and from the workplace as one of the major time sinks in the shift of underground miners. Depending on the mine, it may be as much as two hours moving in and out of an area. Some work areas have accommodated this by having “hot changes” at the work place. However, at some point in time, there are two people tasked with the same job and on site at the same time to make this overlap occur.Tele-operation of underground hard rock equipment eliminated this overlap and also provided a comfortable environment in which to work. By taking advantage of the communications network installed, the miners proved that they could operate three machines with relative ease. This was accomplished by a vision-based, “painted line,” autonomous guidance system termed the light rope system.With a few years’ experience with the system, some issues have arisen, including the cost of the rope itself (Fig. 2).The vehicle’s route is limited to the paths defined by the light rope, and a system of switching power to the light rope to select different routes is required. The rope itself is subject to damage from nearby blasts. Also, the system offers no obstacle detection; the vehicle may be switched off as a means of shutting the machine down thus protecting personnel in the area."

MR. C. S. Gibson: Mr. Chairman, I listened with much interest to Mr. Corlett&apos;s paper. Those of us who are directly engaged in mine ventilation and dust control are impressed by the improved atmospheric conditions to be derived from the use of methods of mining such as those in operation at Aldermac, which Mr. Corlett has just described, and those employed at Noranda. It is a well known fact that drilling-dust is one of the most potent factors in the production of silicosis in mines handling ores containing quartz, so that from that angle the use of diamond drills, instead of percussion drills, to drill ore for blasts in stopes is an important development. A second point which I think merits mention is blasting. Blasting, we all know, creates the most dust in a mine and the fact that you can drill ore for a large blast with diamond drills and fire it, say, on Saturday night, and then have all the next day to ventilate the workings, is a great advance in dust control. 1 have wondered if Mr. Corlett, or possibly those at Noranda, can en-vision the use of the diamond drill as a means of advancing cross-cuts and drifts, preparing stopes, etc. I believe it is a matter which is receiving considerable attention at the moment in some parts of the world and J thought it would be interesting to have Mr. Corlett&apos;s reaction on that point. MR. A. V. CORLETT: I am not quite so hopeful of using diamond drills as a means of drilling holes in the ordinary drift. Maybe some of the diamond drill men can give us some further information on that point. MR. R. D. LoNGYEAR: The diamond drill manufacturers are working on that problem, but until further work is done we have nothing definite to offer. Drilling holes with a diamond drill to compete with rock drills for advancing drifts and cross-cuts is a desirable objective, because of the elimination of drilling dust and the ability to cut a smooth bore of uniform diameter. To reach this objective, higher rates of penetration are required, which can only be achieved by discovering the optimum bit rotating speed, by reducing vibration, and by further improving the bits and machines. We are optimistic, but the problem is still largely in the research stage.
