"THE LETHBRIDGE COAL FIELD lies mainly .to the north and west of the city of Lethbridge. Mining carried on in this area for over eighty years until 1965. Before the building of a railway the coal was carried by bullock wagon to Montana for use in smelting, and for a while by river boat to Medicine Hat for railway use. The single, almost flat, worked seam is designated the ""Galt"" seam and is about 1.5 metres thick. It belongs to the Belly River formation and is under cover of 80 to 180 metres of weakly stratified sediments. A complex system of cross faults adds to the mining difficulties. Close timbering required in the entries and rooms reflected in a high timber cost and lower output per man shift. The coal is High Volatile"" C"" bituminous in rank with maximum gross calorific value of 11,200 Btu per pound and with a well defined cleavage. Roof conditions in the field range from very tender and very heavy on the south end of the field and west of the Oldman River to a more stable character to the north. Relatively speaking, the whole field would earn a rather tender rating and definitely so in relation to many U.S. fields. Floor conditions are characterized by a bentonitic type heaving in the south end of the field west of the Oldman river to a more stable situation in the north, which can tolerate shuttle car operation if kept drained. Water problems are minimal, except paralleling the Oldman River, where the seam dips below the river level. While vigilance is necessary to prevent accumulations of gas, the volume is rather limited. The seam was entered by shafts, except where small mines were located along the Oldman river banks and gained access by drifts. The coal seam was developed by driving either 3 or 4 Face entries 2 1/2 metres (8 ft) wide on 18-metre ( 60-ft) centres. Sets of dual butt entries driven at right angles to the Face entries completed development work. Normally rooms up to 8 metres wide were turned off the butt entries on up to 11 - metre centres. These were worked in groups of three to five, depending on the roof conditions, and normally advanced 60 m (200 ft). In some areas rooms had to be abandoned short of their objectives due to roof pressure, heaving floor and intermittent work."

Presently,Many long-wall fully-mechanized faces in shallow depth coal seams are below room and pillar goaf in Shendong mining area. When the working face is advanced out of concentrated coal pillar in upper room and pillar goaf, strong strata behaviors often cause support crushing accident. Aiming at a support crushing accident which happened in Shigetai coal mine of Shenhua group in Shendong mining area, this paper analyses the stress transfer process while mining out of concentrated coal pillar by numerical simulation software FLAC3D. According to the feature, simplifying the roof of upper room and pillar goaf as supporting-beam structure explains mechanism of large area collapse in room and pillar goaf roof. Based on the feature of supporting-beam structure, deep-hole blasting concentrated coal pillar technology is proposed to control the strong strata behaviors in Shigetai coal mine. The blasting control effect is confirmed through characteristics of strata behaviors, growth circumstance of ground crack and multi-point extensometer monitoring results. By using control technology, Shigetai coal mine has been successfully avoided support crushing accident.

"Corrosion monitoring is commonly used in a variety of industries as a means of effective corrosion control programs to extend the life of the asset and ensure safe operation of the facilities. The majority of the monitoring tools have limitations and tradeoffs – e.g., sacrificing the longevity of the probe for higher measurement resolution. Linear polarization resistance (LPR) probes have the advantage of providing the operator with accurate, real-time corrosion rate data; however, the probes can only be deployed in conditions where the measured environment possesses certain minimal conductivity. In many instances, utilization of LPR probes in conditions with intermittent wetting (for example, conditions where the temperature fluctuates above and below the dew point) presents a challenge. To address this limitation, a special-design cooled corrosion probe has been developed, commercialized and integrated into the distributed control system in the plants. In addition to high-accuracy measurement of corrosion rates, the probe allows for monitoring of pitting corrosion. The most innovative feature of the probe is the cooling circuit, which brings the temperature of the sensors below the dew point, forcing precipitation of moisture and thus permitting corrosion measurements. Additionally, the probe was found to be well-suited for monitoring corrosion in crude distillation unit (CDU) overhead space, where condensation of hydrochloric acid may take place at relatively high temperatures, which would require relatively moderate amount of cooling to be imparted to the probe sensors. This paper presents laboratory-based data from a test simulating CDU refinery environment. A case study is presented to demonstrate how the cooling probe can be effectively used in the plants for corrosion monitoring.INTRODUCTIONConventional corrosion-monitoring techniques such as weight-loss coupons to assess corrosion damage are commonly used in plants1. However, the use of coupons is not only labor-intensive, but also does not deliver real-time corrosion data, thus effectively serving as a “backwards-looking” monitoring tool. "In 2005, the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) commissioned a new silver electrorefining circuit. This circuit was intended to operate with a minimal electrolyte bleed for the control of copper. However, by the time of start-up, the levels of copper-rich silver doré to electrorefining had increased, and despite partial pyro-conversion in a small Top Blown Rotary Converter (TBRC), copper concentration in the silver anode still averaged 7.5%. This necessitated frequent replenishment of the electrolyte with fresh silver nitrate since copper displaced dissolved silver during electrolysis, and therefore requiring a robust copper bleed treatment step in order to maintain cathode silver flake purity at 99.99%. The originally-installed bleed treatment system could not meet the RCM’s needs. A thorough review of known technologies, however, did not indicate one capable of handling the copper load, and resulted, therefore, in the development of a novel copper hydrolysis approach for removal of copper as an insoluble basic nitrate salt, and recovery of the associated nitric acid for re-use in the circuit. Laboratory-scale trials showed reproducible results, and existing equipment was subsequently modified.INTRODUCTIONIn 2005, the introduction of a new silver electrorefining circuit at the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) initiated changes in the way customer silver, collected from the gold doré circuit, was processed. These circuit changes were discussed in a recent paper (Aprahamian, 2015). A wastewater treatment plant had not been budgeted at the time, and this represented a significant constraint when considering the introduction of a wet processing circuit. After a review of various options, a turnkey silver electrorefining circuit was purchased from a European firm. Initially, enough cells were ordered to produce 2 million oz of fine silver (999), with the option to increase to 5 million oz. The selected equipment was based on a Moebius cell design combined with a silver grain pressure dissolver to produce make-up silver nitrate solution. Additionally, an evaporator/hydrolysis unit included in the package appealed to the Mint Refinery, on the basis that it offered a simple way to bleed dissolved copper in electrolyte without generating effluent."

The Noranda Reactor Process (NRP) has been in operation now for more than 30 years and this mature process has attained a high level of performance. The NRP at the Home Smelter of Xstrata Copper treats a wide range of feed materials and a thorough knowledge of both process control and smelting physico-chemistry has been beneficial to help meet the required plant flexibility. In this regard, some level of predictive knowledge related to slag chemistry, in particular, the liquid and solid phases such as spinels or olivines, has been found to be beneficial. In the last decade or so, the availability of commercial thermodynamic modeling packages, such as Factsage1m have been utilized with advantage to help the plant optimize slag chemistry and minimize problems from difficult slags, for example, those the could arise from undue feed variability. This paper illustrates the application of this software in examining a range of operating parameters such as: %Fe in product matte, the %Fe/%Si02 ratio in the slag, the levels of minor slag components including CaO, Ah03, ZnO, and MgO, and the level of oxygen enrichment on the operating conditions of the NRP. The slag composition boundaries at the conditions affecting magnetite control and solid magnetite/other precipitated solid phases, as well the conditions influencing the slag liquidus ranges of NRP slags are also discussed with respect to the overall process chemistry.

Cost management in the conditions of increasing competition and unforeseen market turbulence constitutes one of the key areas of the enterprise?s activity. In the last two years the demand for hard coal on the domestic and global market of non-renewable resources has increased significantly. Polish hard coal mining industry, as an industry in the stage of decline, received a chance for rejuvenation. However, one of the most significant conditions of seizing this opportunity is the rationalization of mining costs and improvement of production effectiveness. Due to the significance of this issue, the main objective of the paper is to identify the possibilities of improving the production effectiveness in the hard coal mining industry. In order to meet such an objective, in the first part of the paper we measured effectiveness in the Polish hard coal mines in years 2006- 2011. The research encompassed three out of five mining enterprises operating in the country. Then based on the received results, guidelines concerning the improvement of effectiveness of production were created, taking into consideration infrastructural, technical, economic and organizational determinants. Furthermore, opportunities and threats for improving the production effectiveness, stemming from the external conditions have also been indicated.

Coal as an energetic raw material is characterized by many features that determine its quality. The data concerning coal are usually treated as independent values, despite the fact that this kind of approach is not always appropriate. In the paper the dependencies between sulfur contents and volatile components in coal and particle size and density were analyzed. The method of ordinary kriging is applied to experimental data to describe this relationship; this method can be used for particles of any size and density. An example of the application of this technique is presented for energetic coal Type 31, originating from one of the Polish hard coal mines in Upper Silesia. Results from ordinary kriging are in good agreement with experimental results. Similar analyses can be performed for other properties of coal material, such as ash content, Roga number, and moisture. On the basis of the data obtained by ordinary kriging, a more comprehensive multidimensional model is described, which can characterize certain deposits or strata from which the analyzed materials originate. This is superior to basing the model only on experimental data, which often is limited by size of the sample. The results obtained by ordinary kriging applied to various types of coal would allow more precise analysis of individual properties of the studied materials and increase the ability to determine significant differences between them. This method can be also applied to other types of mineral raw materials, such as copper ore.

THIS paper is entitled "Some" problems, rather than "The" problems, met in selling coal, since the problems to be met in selling any commodity have to deal with an infinite number of circumstances and conditions. These are believed to be more varied in the case of coal than probably any other commodity. This is due, perhaps, to the fact that coal has been one of the basic materials in the guiding of industrial and national achievement for the past two hundred years. During this time its use has developed from a most haphazard one to uses involving all modern scientific methods, which, rather than simplifying matters as regards the marketing of coal, have added many fresh problems, and these vary according to the particular market served. Since the concern of this paper is primarily the selling of Nova Scotia coal, it is proposed to deal chiefly with some of the specific conditions met in the markets presently served by this coal. For the purpose of discussion, these markets may be considered as divided into three main groups, namely, the Maritime market, the Quebec market, and the Ontario market. THE MARITIME MARKET First of all, let us consider the Maritime market. This is a market which has been regularly served by Nova Scotia coal since coal mining became the first industry in Cape Breton, slightly over one hundred years ago. Conditions as applying to the use of coal have naturally tended to adjust themselves to the characteristics of the coal most readily available, and, therefore, marketing problems are fewer in the Maritimes than in districts where many coals of varied characteristics are offered. Up to recent years, the problems involved were chiefly those of providing satisfactory service insofar as de-liveries were concerned. However, with the speeding-up of manufacturing processes and the necessity of reducing costs to a minimum, users of coal have become interested in obtaining coal that will give the most economical service. It is, therefore, now of importance that the salesman should have full knowledge of the particular conditions applicable to each customer's use in order to deal to the best advantage.

"In washability, the objective is to establish the set of maximum possible separation performance criteria for a given mineral feed. The method of choice for this has been the conventional sink-float analysis. Time, cost and safety aspects of the sink-float method have prompted the search for a new approach for establishing separation performance criteria, especially as performance levels of separator plants can be maximized if reliable information based on an analysis of washability in conjunction with particle size distribution, elemental constituency becomes readily available. The new method to establish washability and associated performance information utilizes at least two measurement technologies concurrently: single energy x-ray transmission and image processing. For porous or very inhomogeneous materials the results can be refined further by using dual energy x-ray transmission and image processing. The value of the collected data increases considerably if the washability data were additionally available in time to be considered in the control of the process plant. The incorporation of an automated washability monitor gives near real-time data that would impinge positively on the profitability of the plant operation. The method was extensively tested with a range of sample with different densities, varying from 1 g/cm³ (coal) to 5 g/cm³ (iron ore).INTRODUCTIONWashability of minerals like coal and iron ore is expressed by a curve or graph showing the results of a series of float-and-sink tests. Several of these curves are drawn to illustrate different conditions or variables, usually on the same axes, thus presenting the information on one sheet of paper. Washability curves are essential not only for the design but also for the operation of preparation plants.In determining the washability analysis, particle density is the underlying feature of all washability curves. Conventionally, the particles are separated into density fractions by immersing them in fluids of a predetermined density followed by skimming of those particles that stay afloat. The particles remaining afloat thus have a density lower than that of the fluid they were subjected to. The particles that remained at the bottom of the fluid container thus had a higher density higher than that of the fluid. By progressively increasing, for example, the density of the fluid and immersing the remaining particles so as to be able to skim the next density fraction, the particles would be fractionated into density groups. The liquids used range from aqueous solutions to organic liquids to suspensions. Unfortunately the liquids used for this separation process are often toxic and expensive. It stands to reason that a new method of determining washability is sought."

"The Thyssen Mining Group of Companies has successfully applied ground freezing technology to numerous projects throughout Europe and North America for over 100 years. Recently, the aspect of data acquisition and data verification has received greater focus.Thyssen Mining has been engaged in several relatively deep shaft sinking projects over the past five (5) years, all of which have required ground freezing to successfully sink through water bearing rock. To safely and economically sink through a quantity of water similar to Saskatchewan’s Potash Mines, it is imperative to understand freeze wall thickness and growth rate.Critical to understanding freeze wall thickness and growth rate, is the collection of accurate data as well as the interpretation of those data. The data can then be utilized to gain a better understanding of the freeze wall growth rate in active projects as well as to provide data to be utilized in modeling for future projects.This paper elaborates on the installation and operation of the data acquisition system utilized at the Newmont Leeville project, Nevada’s first frozen shaft project. In addition, this paper elaborates on the methodology developed by Thyssen Mining to manipulate the freeze wall data derived through the data acquisition system.The successful incorporation of the new system of collection and analysis of freeze wall data for the Leeville Project has given Thyssen Mining a high degree of confidence in the understanding, as well as prediction, of the ground conditions during shaft sinking.This paper will include:•,A brief description of ground freezing and its objective;•,An overview of previous data acquisition methods employed;•,Current data acquisition methods;•,Installation requirements; and,•,Data manipulation and presentation methods."

Roughness of a discontinuity may be an important factor influencing shear strength of the discontinuity. Traditionally, determining the roughness of a discontinuity surface and providing a numerical measure of the roughness has required considerable effort or specialised equipment. The development of new 3D imaging tools that are easy to use has provided effective fast and accurate means of creating 3D surface models from which roughness measurements can be readily obtained. These new techniques are versatile enabling a user to measure roughness along any desired profile and at any resolution up to the limit of the spatial subtense of a measurement on the discontinuity surface. This paper primarily reviews extensions to the use of 3D imaging that enable the measurement of roughness. Additionally we provide some examples of the measurements and examine some of the issues associated with extracting measures from the spatial data that will support estimation of shear strength.

Before entering into a discussion of wet washing, it will be advisable to consider the various phases and conditions sur- rounding the problem of cleaning coal from the Corbin mines. Corbin is located in the south-east part of British Columbia in the Crowsnest Pass district, about 35 miles north of the International boundary and about three miles west of the Flat-head Range of the Rocky Mountains. It is reached by a rail-way, about thirteen miles long, from McGillivray, B.C., a point on the Crowsnest branch of the Canadian Pacific rail-way, owned and operated by the Eastern British Columbia Railway Company, a subsidiary company of Corbin Coals, Limited. The coal is assumed to occur here, as principally elsewhere in the Rockies, in the Kootenai series of the Lower Cretaceous, but owing to the disturbed condition of the surrounding country and, therefore, the magnitude of the geological study involved, this has never been definitely worked out. The coal is of the usual Crowsnest high-grade steam-coal, containing from 9 to 12 per cent. of ash, but appears to have 4 to 5 per cent. less volatile combustible matter than other coals being mined in this district, a representative analysis being about as follows:

"L’étude présentée ici vise à étudier l’influence, lors de stimulation hydraulique de puits dans les réservoirs géothermiques de type Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS), du comportement mécanique des zones de failles recoupant le puits sur la réponse hydraulique du réseau de fractures 3D. Dans ce but, un modèle 3D, basé sur la méthode des éléments distincts et dans lequel les zones de failles recoupant le puits sont modélisées par des fractures numériques 2D, est mis en oeuvre. Les modélisations présentées ici visent à caractériser l’influence du comportement mécanique (type de comportement, hétérogénéité) sur la cinétique de la stimulation hydraulique, ainsi que sur son effet spatial autour du puits. INTRODUCTIONPour le développement de l’exploitation géothermique de type Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS), la phase de stimulation conditionne grandement le succés du projet ; en effet, elle a pour objectif d’augmenter l’injectivité et la productivité des puits et doit permettre d’assurer la connexion entre les puits d’injection et de production garantissant ainsi la viabilité technique et économique de l’échangeur. Pour le site EGS de Soultz-sous-Forêts (France), parmi différentes techniques de stimulation, la stimulation hydraulique a été utilisée à cette fin en provoquant une augmentation irréversible de la perméabilité autour des puits. Dans ce type de réservoirs fracturés, le but des stimulations hydrauliques est de réactiver, plus spécifiquement en cisaillement, des structures hydrauliques pré-existantes (fractures, zones de failles etc.) dans le socle cristallin. La compréhension des phénomènes physiques durant la stimulation hydraulique est cruciale pour optimiser cette technologie et pour contrôler/limiter les risques associés (viabilité technique et économique des puits, sismicité induite etc.). C’est notamment le cas pour la relation entre le comportement mécanique des structures stimulées et les conséquences sur le comportement hydraulique dans un contexte tectonique spécifique."

Canada is currently the world's largest supplier of zinc concentrates and is also a major producer of zinc metal. This dominant position in the world's zinc market is a fairly recent circumstance and, in fact, the country's zinc industry was founded only in the early part of the twentieth century. By contrast, the American zinc industry was well established by the mid-nineteenth century, largely based on technology originally imported from the still older European practice. Initial attempts to create a viable Canadian zinc smelter were based on the traditional practice and were unsuccessful; success came only with new electrolytic technology, much of which was developed domestically. The purpose of this paper is to outline the early attempts to produce metallic zinc in Canada and to trace the gradual development of these first efforts into a viable zinc industry based on modern science and technology.

The real option valuation method is often presented as an alternative to the conventional discounted cash flow (DCF) approach because it is able to recognize additional project value due to the presence of management flexibility. However, these two valuation methods can be separated on a more fundamental level by their differences in risk discounting. Real option valuation applies the risk-adjustment to the source of uncertainty in the cash flow while the DCF method adjusts for risk at the aggregate level of net cash flow. This seemingly small difference is the reason why the real option method is able to differentiate between projects according to each project?s unique risk characteristics while the conventional DCF approach cannot. This paper provides an overview of the real options and DCF valuation frameworks and discusses the differences in risk discounting that exist between the two methods. Using grade-school mathematics, this paper clearly demonstrates how, with real options, a unique project risk discount can be calculated which is directly linked to the project?s unique risk profile. It also highlights why the DCF method fails in this regard and shows why a call to ?increase the Risk-Adjusted Discount Rate? is an incomplete solution at best. Finally, a heap-leach project and satellite reserve development project are valued with both techniques and the difference in investment conclusions is explained in terms of the risk-discounting concepts discussed here.

"The Nor-Acme gold mine is near the shore of Snow lake, northern Manitoba, about 75 miles east of Flin Flon. The claims that form the nucleus of the present property were staked in 1927 by C. R. Parres, but it was not until 1941 that diamond drilling disclosed the potentialities of the deposit. In that year a large-scale drilling programme was begun under the direction of F. Ebbutt, of the Howe Sound Exploration and Development Company. Two orebodies were outlined containing about 5,000,000 tons of ore assaying $5.25 in gold per ton. In August, 1945, construction of the mining plant was begun.All information and interpretations contained in the following brief description of the deposit were obtained from surface mapping.GEOLOGYThe ore lies at the contact between a coarse, basic, pyroclastic rock, which is the hanging-wall, and grey, acidic lavas and sediments, which form the footwall. These rocks are cut by irregular basic intrusions that vary in composition from diorite to hornblendite, and by small acidic dykes . Tourmaline is locally common in the hanging-wall rock near the ore.The ore occurs in brecciated, silicified, and ·slightly carbonatized rock. Arsenopyrite is the main sulphide and the gold is associated with it. Pyrrhotite is locally abundant and minor pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, and cubanite have been noted. Two orebodies are known, the Dick and the Toots. The Toots, which is much the smaller of the two, is about 1,000 feet west of the Dick."

Flotation testing of Flin Flon ore was started in the Denver laboratory of Complex Ores Recoveries Co. in March, 1926. There had been a considerable amount of flotation testing previously which had shown possibilities of success, and it was felt that, with the increased knowledge of flotation and the comparatively new reagents then available, flotation held out the best prospects for a successful commercial treatment of this ore. There remained available for this experimental work a small amount of the rejects from a thorough sampling of the mine and some ore from the mine dump.

"The property of Matachewan Consolidated Mines is in the Matachewan area on the west side of Montreal river. It lies in the western extension of the Kirkland Lake sedimentary belt. The first discovery of gold on the property was made by S. Otisse, in 1916. The property was taken over by Ventures, Limited, in 1933 and production commenced in late 1934. To date (December 31st, 1947) it has amounted to 2,308,800 tons, from which gold and silver to the value of $9,567,600 has been recovered. The mill is currently treating 650 tons of ore a day.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe deposits lie close to the south contact of a belt of sediments striking in a general east-west direction. The sediments, presumed to be of Timiskaming age, consist of light buff arkose and greywacke, containing small pebbles. The Keewatin volcanic rocks to the south are andesites or basalts with cuff and agglomerate bands developed especially near the contact with the sediments. The lavas and sediments are overlain by relatively flat-lying sediments of the Cobalt series to the south and west of the mine, but these later sediments are not involved in the mineralization under discussion. The Keewatin lavas and Timiskaming sediments are intruded by dykes and lenses of red syenite porphyry that have approximately the same strike and dip as the invaded rocks. Later diabase dykes, apparently post-ore, run in a north-south direction and cut all rocks except the Cobalt series.OREBODIESThe gold-bearing mineralization forms bodies of two different types: (1) Within the volcanic rocks irregular orebodies with limited vertical extent. These consist of a series of flat-dipping quartz stringers and adjacent lavas and /or cuffs fractured, bleached, and mineralized with pyrite and gold. They are higher grade than the second type (average about 0.16 oz. gold a ton) and formed the main source of ore for the first 5 years of production. They are described in more detail than can be given here in an article by C. H. Hopper (4).
