"The implementation of a new and highly efficient converting practice at the Glencore Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations Smelter has opened the possibility to further capacity increases by using larger ladles. To quantify the impact of increasing ladle sizes from 200 to 300 ft3, XPS constructed a detailed discrete event simulation using the commercial software package Rockwell Arena®. The challenges associated with implementing a model on an intricate and tightly scheduled process, and the solutions needed to derive meaningful results will be presented. The aisle capacity is predicted to increase by approximately 17 %, with a reduction in furnace tapping demand of 8 %. Arena modeling capabilities and the key factors contributing to the overall capacity increase at the Sudbury INO Smelter will be reviewed and presented.INTRODUCTION The Glencore Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations (INO) comprises two Ni-Cu-PGM mines, Strathcona Mill, and the Sudbury Smelter. The Smelter has operated continuously since 1929 using different processes to produce nickel-copper Bessemer matte. Feeds to the Sudbury INO Smelter are a blend of concentrate from Strathcona Mill, Raglan concentrate produced at the mine-mill complex in Raglan, Quebec, as well as third party concentrate feeds shipped to Sudbury from around the world. In 2016, the Sudbury INO Smelter produced 75,900 tonnes of nickel and 20,000 tonnes of copper in Bessemer matte. The product matte is shipped to Glencore’s Nikkelverk refinery in Kristiansand, Norway where it is refined to produce nickel and copper cathode. 1. De Beers, Diamonds and Canada 1.1. De Beers was founded long ago (1888, the same time that Canada became a country) in a rural mining village in South Africa. Today, we employ 22,000 people across 19 countries and have 14 mines including open pits, shafts, beach-sands and seabed. 1.2. Last year our sales were US$5.7 billion and our total production amounted to 47 million carats which means a 40% global market share. For the Kyoto buffs in the audience, the company consumes 66 million cubic metres of water per annum, 210 million litres of hydrocarbon fuel and 1,600 GWh of electricity. De Beers in Botswana is the leading source of diamonds 2.1 Today Botswana is the Jewell in the Crown. There are three big open pits that enjoy economies of scale that make them the lowest cost producers. Last year 60 million tonnes of overburden and 30 million tonnes of ore were moved in Botswana alone. "FLAC3D is an important numerical analysis software to study dynamic response of rock slope. In application of the program, the common issues such as absorbing boundary and the method to apply wave have been well studied. However, effects of model mesh size, damping and width of slope are still unknown. In order to make the result more convictive, this article has discussed the above issues systematically. It found that when the maximum mesh size is smaller than 1/10~1/8 of the smallest wavelength, the mesh size is smaller, the computational accuracy is higher. Meanwhile, values of damping and width of slope have no effect on the result. Additional, results of FLAC3D modeling on wave transmission across rock joints agree well with analytical solutions, so it has verified the capability and accuracy of FLAC3D on dynamic response of rock slope.INTRODUCTIONChina is a mountainous country accompanied with many earthquakes. Thousands of geological disasters are triggered by the Wenchuan Earthquake in Sichuan Province, and the majority of the disasters are landslides induced (Xu et al., 2009). Meanwhile, the paper (Li et al., 2003) points out five significant issues about dynamic loading in the area of geotechnical engineering, which includes the study of rock slope stability under earthquakes, and the dynamic response of rock slopes is one of its important study issues."

Evaluation of three dimensionally non-uniform strain distribution in rocks under various conditions such as in water or under freeze-thaw cycles is of significant importance to understand their complex deformations and fracturing mechanisms. For this purpose, we developed an image analysis method which can evaluate or “measure” the three dimensional (3-D) strain distribution in rocks. The proposed method utilizes the 3-D images of rock under initial and deformed configurations, which are obtained by some imaging techniques such as X-ray computed tomography (X-rayCT). In the proposed method, the obtained 3-D images are divided into multiple sub-regions of interest. For each sub-region, the strain is evaluated utilizing 3-D affine transform with unknown coefficients to be determined. In the first step, 3-D voxel level displacements at multiple representative points in each sub-region are computed by 3- D digital volume correlation technique between the comparison images and the initial-guess of the transform coefficients are obtained. In the second step, referring to the initial-guess of unknown transform coefficient, they were optimized in sub-voxel level by finding optimum digital volume correlation between the comparison images, which can evaluate the transform coefficients with higher precision. From the calculated transform coefficients, the strain was directly obtained through the spatial derivative of displacement based on affine transform. In this paper, along with the description of the proposed method, the evaluation of deformation in a lignite specimen due to immersion in water was presented as an application example. As the 3-D imaging technique, micro-focus X-rayCT was applied. The result showed that the induced dilatational strain field due to the initiation and extension of cracks in the specimen was clearly captured. Therefore, authors believe that the proposed method can be applicable to various problems in rock mechanics.

There are a number of hydrogen storage systems proposed for automotive applications. However, all of the current suggestions fall short of the DOE targets for storage density and volumetric density. The DOE has suggested that only through radically new ideas will a practical solution to hydrogen storage for automotive applications be realized. This paper provides some background in chemical hydrogen storage and discusses roadblocks to the implementation of some proposed technologies.

Wear mechanisms of two commercial aluminum alloys, namely a spray formed and extruded Al-25%Si alloy, and a sand cast A390 alloy (18.5 %Si) that are known to be successful in cylinder bore technology were studied to have a better understanding of the requirements for wear resistant aluminum alloy design. From durability point of view these alloys are known to be successful for engine bore applications. It is interesting to compare the wear mechanisms in these alloys because they have significantly different silicon content and microstructures, and were produced using different techniques. The wear tests were done using a block-on-ring configuration, in controlled air atmospheres (5 % relative humidity). In spite of the differences in silicon content and microstructure, the wear mechanisms were similar and consisted of formation and destruction of hard tribolayers that are either formed by either mechanical or chemical interactions on contact surfaces. The differences in the wear rates between the two alloys arose from the differences in the hardness of the worn surfaces, and the alloy's ability to sustain the tribolayers on the worn surfaces.

"The major importance of liners in grinding is their role in providing an appropriate trajectory for the charge. Since it is not possible to study the charge movement by direct observation in operating industrial mills, this task is accomplished by physical (laboratory), and/or, mathematical (software) methods. Because of the high cost and a longer time required for a physical analysis, mathematical simulations have become more common. Simulation of the effect of liner shape on the charge movement has provided a means to select a proper design based on the operational objectives and conditions. Furthermore, the liner shape changes due to wear and impact during operation, which will influence the charge trajectory. This adds more of an incentive to use simulation. These changes in liner could be predicted through liner profile measurements during operation and/or simulation. In this research, an inhouse developed DEM software called KMPCDEM © was used to simulate the charge movement in industrial plant SAG mills. A geometrical method of implementing the shell liners on SAG mills at the Sarcheshmeh (9.75×4.87 m) and the Gole-E-Ghohar (9×2.05 m) operations facilitated the software simulation. Point by point implementation of the measurements of liner profiles of these mills enabled the study to trend the change in the charge movement as the liners wear. Comparison of the simulation to a laboratory mill (1 m diameter) showed that the difference between the measured and predicted charge impact point, shoulder angle and toe angle were 6, 4 and 3°, respectively.INTRODUCTIONComminution is the most energy intensive operation constituting the major portion of operating and capital costs of a mineral processing plant. In the last decade, a vast number of research was aimed at studying various aspects of grinding with the aim of performance improvements (Davis, 1919; Mishra & Rajamani, 1990; kalala, Breetzke, & Moys, 2008). Mill liners transfer the input power to the charge and play a significant role in affecting the motion of the charge (Mclvor, 1983; Mishra & Rajamani, 1990; Radziszewski, 1997; Van Nierop, Glover, Hinde, & Moys, 2001; kalala et al., 2008). Lifters are usually used with mill liners to extend their life and to enhance the grinding and impact breakage efficiency. Mill lifters are used to raise the grinding media and ore to transfer the energy from the mill to the load (Rezaeizadeh, Fooladi, Powell, & Weerasekara, 2010)."

"The first commercial scale application of CSIRO’s direct solvent extraction (DSX) technology has been in operation at the Boleo project in Mexico since December, 2015. In this application, DSX is a synergistic solvent extraction system consisting of the extractants LIX 63 and Versatic 10 for recovery of cobalt and zinc from a solution background of manganese, magnesium, and calcium. Key operating parameters such as metal extraction, phase disengagement and extractant stability are summarized and discussed in this paper.INTRODUCTION Commissioning of the Boleo processing plant, located on Mexico’s Baja peninsula, began with the copper circuit starting in late 2014, with first copper cathode production achieved in January, 2015. The cobalt and zinc circuits began commissioning in December, 2015 with first zinc sulphate monohydrate (ZSM) and cobalt cathode production achieved in February and April, 2016 respectively. The Boleo project flow sheet and development has been described in detail in previous publications (Dreisinger, et al. 2005; Dreisinger, Baxter, & Molnar, 2006; Dreisinger, et al. 2008; Dreisinger, et al. 2009) and is summarized schematically in Figure 1. Boleo is a mixed oxide/sulphide Cu-Co-Zn-Mn high clay deposit that is processed in a whole ore, atmospheric, oxidative and reductive, sulphuric acid/seawater leach. Copper is recovered as cathode by conventional solvent extraction and electrowinning. Cobalt and zinc are recovered, from a solution background of manganese, magnesium, and calcium, by CSIRO’s synergistic solvent extraction technology Direct Solvent Extraction (DSX). Cobalt and zinc are bulk stripped from the DSX circuit and then further purified by phosphinic acid solvent extraction to produce zinc sulphate monohydrate granules via spray dried granulation and cobalt cathode rounds via divided cell electrowinning."

The AG/SAG circuit discharge P80 is now increasingly referred to as the ?Transfer Size? or T80 for short. From the literature it is apparent that in circuit design some approaches to the sizing of AG/SAG mills as well as the ball mills that they feed use this parameter. This paper reviews whether the use of the T80 is appropriate in this context. In the course of the review examples of AG/SAG discharge size distributions measured from range of operating circuits are used to illustrate the arguments made.

ZEBALLOS is a relatively new mining camp. It is on the west coast of Vancouver island, approximately 195 nautical miles northwestward from Victoria. Previous to 1934, a small amount of placer gold had been recovered from the Zeballos river and tributary creeks. However, it was not until the winter of 1934-35, when shipments of high-grade gold ore were made from the property of the White Star Gold Mines, Limited, that lode gold mining really began. Since then, several new mines and many promising prospects have been found. Milling in standard sized mills only commenced late in 1938, when the 75-ton mill of Privateer Mines, Limited, and the 50-ton mill of Spud Valley Gold Mines, limited, were first turned over. The most striking feature of the camp is the high-grade quality of the ore as usually mined. At one property, the ore along a drift 650 feet long has ranged from 5.8 ounces per ton to 17.5 ounces, over average vein-widths ranging from 8.3 inches to 14.5 inches in selected blocks along the drift. One . high-grade shipment of 196.6 pounds of ore from the same property contained 142.877 ounces of gold. The present paper deals only with that part of the area in which mining operations are most active, namely the main Zeballos River valley and its tributaries, Spud and Goldvalley creeks. Orano Canada Inc. (Orano) operates the McClean Lake mill in northern Saskatchewan, processing high concentration uranium ore, delivered in slurry form, from the Cameco operated Cigar Lake mine. This slurry is ultimately processed into the purified uranium oxide product known as calcined yellowcake. During the calcining process, sulphate (SO42-) entrained in the yellowcake undergoes thermal decomposition into sulphur dioxide (SO2). SO2 is a colourless gas that poses health and safety risks. Since 2016, an anhydrous ammonia dosing system was successfully added to the existing Venturi particulate scrubber system to provide efficient removal of SO2 from the calciner off-gas. Within the pH controlled scrubber solution, SO2 exists in a pH dependent equilibrium with sulphite/bisulphite (SO32-/ HSO3-). The presence of a significant fraction of reduced sulphite and bisulphite in mill solutions presents a hazard in downstream circuits. Should these solutions drop in pH, either through natural oxidation or inadvertent mixing with low pH solutions, the solution equilibrium will shift from SO32-/HSO3- in favour of SO2, resulting in the evolution of SO2 gas from any liquid surfaces. In 2018, Hatch Ltd. (Hatch) and Orano implemented a design change in the calciner scrubber system. Blowdown from this system is now treated in an oxidation pre-step utilizing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and anhydrous ammonia (NH3) for pH control, in order to convert the residual sulphite/bisulphite present in solution to stable ammonium sulphate product. This paper will detail some of the challenges and actions undertaken to minimize SO2 risk, culminating in the recent introduction of a novel system designed to oxidize sulphite/bisulphite and prevent mobilization from the calciner scrubber solution into other mill areas where there is the potential for acidification and SO2 release.

"Most mine managers in Canada today will agree that one of the keys to mining efficiency and productivity is their human resources. A5 a result, many mines develop some sort of incentive designed to tap their employees' capabilities to the fullest extent. Historically, the most common plans used have been ""piece-rate"" plans, where individual or small groups of miners are paid a financial bonus based on some measure of their productivity. Recently, however, incentive plans that take a more team-based approach have been developed in some Canadian mines. One such plan will be defined in this paper, and its popularity in the industry today discussed.Gainsharing PlansThere are two primary components to a gainsharing plan. The first is a cash incentive, which is paid to all employees and based on factors that are highly correlated with employee productivity, and key to the profitability of the mine. For example, the typical gainsharing cash incentive is based on the cost/unit of metal produced. Management (in consultation with employees in some cases) will establish the budgeted cost per tonne, and any savings in this amount is shared between the company and the employees. The second is a management philosophy and associated communication network, which is designed to foster an environment that encourages information exchanges, communication, participation, and trust between employees and management. The typical gainsharing communication network consists of two tiers of committees. The first, operational committees, include all employees working in the same department or departments which frequently interact. The employees meet monthly with management personnel to discuss problems encountered and brainstorm for solutions. In most cases, these committees will nominate a person in the group to structure the meeting to maximize its efficiency. The second, the screening committee, is a single group consisting of representatives from the various operational groups, whose primary job is to ensure that the plan is effective, and the objectives and results generated by the plan remain consistent with the mine objectives. In short, gainsharing plans tell employees that their bonus depends upon performance and then gives them the opportunity and incentive to affect that performance. The opportunity is provided by a communication network and positive management practices, and the incentive comes in the form of ""intrinsic"" rewards of participation and the ""extrinsic"" rewards of the bonus payments. In mineral processing plants, cyclones typically perform the classification duty prior to the downstream recovery process. Particle size distribution of the cyclone overflow is an important parameter and can be viewed as the product of the comminution process. Too coarse of a product will likely have poorly liberated valuable minerals and make recovery difficult. Too fine of a product may represent a missed opportunity to increase plant throughput and/or also result in low recovery due to poor kinetics. “Near-line” particle size measurement instrumentation has been in place for several decades, its availability and low measurement frequency have typically been inadequate for reliable use in automatic control. CiDRA Minerals Processing has developed a novel and robust technology that provides a highly reliable and low maintenance system for “on-line” measurement of the particle size in the overflow of individual cyclones. The system is based around a wetted sensor design with no moving parts and provides a real-time trend of the desired target grind size parameter. The system does not require sampling and associated sample transfer piping that is prone to plugging, thus avoiding high maintenance requirements. Plant data and benefits realized from the latest installations of the CYCLONEtrac PST will be presented. INTRODUCTION Impact-based real-time hydrocyclone particle size measurement Acoustic impact-based particle size tracking is a unique method for measuring and controlling the particle size in cyclone overflow streams. The implementation of this technology is centered upon a sensor probe that is inserted into the overflow slurry stream via a two-inch (50 mm) hole in the overflow pipe (Figure 1). Particles within the slurry stream impact the surface of the probe generating travelling stress waves within the probe. A sensor converts these travelling stress waves into an electrical signal and proprietary signal processing techniques convert these signals into a particle size measurement that is output every four seconds. The sensor is constantly in contact with many particles in the slurry stream, thus obtaining information from orders of magnitude more particles than traditional sample-based technologies. The sensor has no impact on cyclone performance because it is located downstream of the hydrocyclone and the presence of an air core ensures there is no change in the back pressure seen by the hydrocyclone.

ABSTRACT Since 1964, the Iron Ore Company of Canada has deposited iron ore tailings into Wabush Lake in western Labrador, Canada. From 1999 to 2008, the authors completed multibeam bathymetric and sampling surveys and an airborne LiDAR survey. These data were integrated to study the evolution of the tailings delta shoreline and lakebed elevation. Subaqueous channels evolved between surveys, influencing the tailings depositional pattern. With this analysis it is possible to evaluate the effect of disposal strategies on the delta topset and tailings accumulation. This project uniquely couples marine and terrestrial techniques to follow the fate of tailings in a dispersal system.

"The Lexington-Lone Star CU-Au deposits straddle the Canada U. S.A. border, south of Greenwood, British Columbia. This 3 km long linear porphyry system occurs in a northeast dipping belt of sheared quartz porphyry and serpentinite. The best grades of mineralization occur in three principal bodies known as the Pit zone, the Northwest zone and the Lexington Main zone. The Pit zone at the Lone Star mine is the largest of the mineralized bodies and consists of fracture fillings and disseminations of pyrite, chalcopyrite and minor molybdenite, hosted by the Lexington quartz porphyry. The Northwest zone, discovered by drilling through overburden near the 49th Parallel, consists of pyrite-chalcopyrite-gold mineralization in the quartz porphyry and the footwall serpentinite. The Lexington Main zone has the highest grade of gold and occurs near the footwall of the quartz porphyry with the mineralogy and setting similar to the Northwest zone. Alteration of the host quartz porphyry is mostly sericitic and chloritic; alteration in the adjacent serpentinite is mostly talc and carbonates.A weighted average of the drill-indicated reserves is 19.5 million tonnes grading 0.56% CU and 0.55 gl t Au.IntroductionThis paper describes copper-gold mineralization associated with the Lexington quartz porphyry in the Greenwood mining camp of south-central British Columbia and adjacent parts of Washington State (Fig. 1).Access to the property is mainly by a network of farm, logging and old mining roads to the U.S. border, 10 km south of Greenwood, British Columbia."

"The ever increasing demand for cleaner steels with low inclusion content has highlighted the limits of our current knowledge for controlling and predicting inclusion agglomeration and removal during liquid steel processing. Key knowledge gaps in this area result from the complex nature of the problems associated with measuring and visualizing the phenomena studied. Confocal scanning laser microscope (CSLM) allows for continuous in situ observation of micron-size samples in real time, at high resolution, under conditions relevant to the steelmaking process. This paper summarizes some of recent CSLM applications in our laboratory to illustrate the methods of analyzing transient behavior. The reaction between inclusions and slag is given as an example. The dissolution rate of calcium aluminate inclusions in CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 slags has been studied at elevated temperatures: 1500, 1550 and 1600°C as well as thermodynamic/kinetic analysis. It is found that total dissolution time decreased with increasing temperature. The rate limiting steps are discussed. It is shown that the diffusion through a product layer is responsible for dissolution at 1500°C. At higher temperature, dissolution is most likely controlled by both boundary layer diffusion and chemical reaction at the slag-inclusion interface. In this paper, the evidence for and against the theory will be critically examined and repercussions of the theory to steel refining processes will be discussed.INTRODUCTION Inclusion formation during liquid steel refining is an unavoidable consequence of current ladle steelmaking processes. The nature and quantity of the inclusions formed in steel is critical in steelmaking, as it affects both productivity through clogging, and downstream physical properties of the steel. It is therefore crucial to better understand and control the formation, agglomeration and dissolution behaviour of inclusions in a slag in order to improve the removability of inclusions from liquid steel. Most research (Sandhage & Yurek, 1988; Sandhage & Yurek, 1990a; Sandhuge & Yurek, 1990b; Sandhuge, 1991) relevant to the kinetics of inclusion removal has been obtained by using a technique where simulated inclusion material (ceramic rods) is dipped in slag and the dissolution rate is measured. While much has been learned using this approach, the difference in scale from bulk materials to inclusions is likely to have a significant bearing on the dissolution kinetics of inclusions in a slag and will certainly result in a very different influence of capillary effects. Further, the data obtained using an indirect (dip test) procedure relies on a comparison of the initial and final conditions of a sample rather than in-situ observation which can be achieved in a confocal microscope in real time."

In this paper, we attempt to answer an often asked question, how can metal mining be compatible with the principles of sustainable development. Starting with the classic Brundtland Commission definition of sustainable development as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs," we make the case that mining is or should be sustainable, using examples of sustainable practices at ASARCO LLC, an integrated U.S primary copper producer. These examples cover the entire mining cycle starting with exploration, mining, beneficiation, smelting, refining, closure and post-closure and post-mining land use. It is hoped that the presentation will challenge the mining industry to even greater innovation as future mineral development projects are planned.

"The property of Aunor Gold Mines, Limited, is in Deloro township, Ontario, about 3 miles southeast of Timmins. It consists of a group of eleven claims between the Buffalo Ankerite and Delnite mines.In the autumn of 1909, two brothers, John A. and W. S. Mitchell, joined the 'gold rush' to Porcupine. By the time they arrived the township of Tisdale, in which the Hollinger and Dome discoveries had been made, was staked solid but they managed to locate four claims in the northern part of Deloro township. Sufficient surface work was performed to bring the claims to patent in 1915. Following the Porcupine fire the Mitchells left the north to follow the oil developments in southwestern United States. In 1935 because of the rise in the price of gold and the successful development of the l3uffalo Ankerite and Delnite mines, they returned to Timmins and organized Augite Porcupine Mines, Limited, which combined the original four claims in Deloro and two adjoining claims controlled by Montreal River International Silver Mines, Limited. There were few rock exposures on the property, and as the overburden was generally deep surface exploration was impracticable. A programme of diamond drilling was, there; fore, undertaken in an endeavour to locate the western extension of the orebearing formation of the Buffalo Ankerite mine. This drilling was started in August 1936, and 5 months later ore was intersected at a depth of 500 feet on the south boundary of the property."

"The centrifugal slurry pumps feeding cyclones are critical components used in the grinding process. It is well known that for this type of pumps the performance degradation is very intense. To minimize downtime a complete stand-by slurry pump is always installed in a parallel circuit. The replacement decision of slurry pumps is sometimes set on specific periods of time that are empirically determined, based on previous experience; unless a pump failure triggers the second (standby) pump. Given the significant energy costs in the grinding process and a desire to increase competitiveness, engineers and scientists started research in this field while manufacturers also took actions in order to improve pumps reliability and performance. The lack of standardization regarding the methods used to benchmark and evaluate the energy performances of cyclone slurry pump systems in the mining industry makes it difficult for an enterprise to take informed decisions concerning the replacement or optimization of its process based on energy benchmarking of such slurry pump systems. This paper proposes a new methodology of benchmarking slurry pump performances using a new concept of Benchmark Energy factor (BEF) based on Mathematical Model Benchmarking. The concept of BEF has been proven successful in other industries. A new standard addressing the guidelines for benchmarking the energy performance of slurry pumps for cyclones was proposed within the Canadian Standards Association. This standard will provide a unified and consistent methodology for performing measurement activities with the ability to measure and verify the system energy performance in the field through the BEF approach. Practical examples based on the new concept are presented with comments."
