"The cost of occupational injuries and diseases in the mining industry in Quebec was estimated for the period of 2010 to 2012. The method used takes into account the financial and human costs assumed by employers, workers, and the community. To better direct research and prevention toward issues with the most significant consequences, the results are presented in various ranking tables, which stakeholders might find useful.RÉSUMÉ Le coût des accidents du travail et des maladies professionnelles dans l’industrie minière au Québec a été estimé pour la période 2010-2012. La méthode utilisée prend en compte les coûts financiers et humains endossés par les employeurs, les travailleurs et la communauté. Afin de mieux orienter les recherches et la prévention vers les problèmes ayant les plus graves conséquences, les résultats sont présentés dans divers tableaux de classement, qui seront d’une grande utilité aux parties prenantes. INTRODUCTIONThe mining industry is much safer today than it was 30 or 40 years ago, mainly due to a more qualified workforce, the use of automated equipment, and a corporate culture more focused on occupational health and safety (OHS); however, the number and the severity of occupational injuries and diseases continue to make this industry one of the most hazardous. In the province of Quebec, the mining industry accounts for approximately 0.4% of paid workers but is the source of 4% of fatal work accidents. It is, therefore, important to continue the prevention efforts already underway in the mining industry.The difficult global economy, which has affected the mining industry in the last few years, is an opportunity to reaffirm that sound management of OHS can have a positive impact on companies’ productivity and profitability. Occupational injuries and diseases are costly for the companies concerned and for society as a whole. Reducing their occurrence makes it possible to reduce not only the size of workers’ compensation board contributions but also several other financial and human costs."

"Niobec mine, a producer of pyrochlore concentrates since 1976, became a producer of ferroniobium in 1994 and achieved accreditation to the ISO 9002 standard in 1995. The goal of ISO 9002 is to ensure that the products supplied to clients regularly meet their specifications, through explicit work standards and procedures throughout the production process, from deposit appraisal to ferroniobium production.A key element of ISO 9002 implementation at Niobec consists of the quality control procedures applied to the raw materials: the ore fed to the mill and the pyrochlore concentrate fed to the reduction plant. These controls extend from exploration, deposit appraisal, mine planning and reserves estimation, mining, mineral processing and, finally, ferroniobium production. The implementation of ISO 9002 has allowed more efficient control of the quality of the final product sold to clients. It requires interactive team work, the role of the geologist being to relate all information pertaining to raw material and product quality to the geological framework of the deposits."

"Preliminary investigations indicate that organic lake sediments offer some potential for gold exploration within the Canadian Shield of northwestern Saskatchewan. It is also apparent that certain precautions must be taken.Gold is primarily related to the organic fraction of the lake sediments, which, although giving consistant Au contents to those sediments, may restrict the dispersion of Au within the lake itself. It may be necessary to carry out selective extractions on the lake sediments to differentiate between Au related to organic sequestration, indicative of hydromorphic and/ or chemical dispersion, and Au related to inorganics, indicative of mechanical dispersion.Lake sediments are probably only of use for very detailed exploration (i.e. every lake). One to three samples per lake should be appropriate, although a single centre-lake organic-rich sediment sample may be adequate in very small lakes. Each lake sediment sample should be analyzed at least twice and the analytical data carefully monitored and evaluated.The use of As in lake sediments as a pathfinder element for gold is applicable in the search for certain types of gold occurrences.Following detailed lake sediment sampling, basal till sampling can possibly be used to localize areas of potential gold with or without base metal mineralization."

"AbstractA number of plant-scale cyanidation tests were carried out in an attempt to uncover the causes of fluctuations in gold recovery efficiency. Computer analysis of the results verified that the treatment of reclaimed waste rock material along with normal run-of-mine ore was having an adverse effect on metallurgical efficiency. Mineralogical examinations showed that the free gold particles in the dump material were heavily tarnished or coated (predominantly by hydrated iron oxide), accounting for the lower recoveries. The indications were that the effect could be counteracted somewhat by using higher than normal cyanide and lime reagent concentrations and adequate leaching times. Analysis of the results showed further that leach pulp density was an important operating parameter affecting extraction efficiency. A variable activation energy leaching model provided an extremely good characterization of individual batch leach runs.IntroductionFLUCTUATING METALLURGICAL EFFICIENCY at the gold concentrator of the S.A. "Al–Si–Cu–Mg die casting alloys are widely used in the automotive industry, and recent advancements in high pressure die casting technology enable heat treating products to achieve desirable properties. However, CO2emissions associated with die-casting production lines should be reduced to address the global warming issue. In this study, the relation between the microstructures and thermal stability of precipitates formed during isothermal aging at 423, 485, and 558 K of Al-11.0 mass%Si-1.8 mass%Cu-0.2 mass% Mg (JIS ADC12) was investigated using Vickers hardness tests and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The hardness tests and TEM results showed that Si compounds and Al–Cu compounds enhanced the mechanical properties of the alloy and that the predominant compound affecting the mechanical properties differed between specimens treated at 423 K and those treated at 558 K. Moreover, additional aging at 423–458 K resulted in a material with a Vickers hardness higher than that of the isothermally single-aged material. Differential scanning calorimetry, differential elemental analysis, and selected-area diffraction analysis using TEM suggested that the combination of Al–Cu compounds precipitated at low aging temperatures and Si compounds precipitated during preliminary aging increased the mechanical strength, resulting in a maximum hardness of 130 HV.INTRODUCTIONAl–Si–Cu–Mg die casting alloys have well-balanced mechanical properties, machinability, and cast ability. These alloys are therefore widely used in the automotive industry because of their superior characteristics, accounting for>90% of the aluminum used in die casting production. As a substitute for iron-based materials, these alloys have contributed to the development of lightweight vehicles.Dong et al. (2014) reported that the heat treatment of die casting materials is effective for changing their dimensions under high temperatures as a result of the precipitation of solid-solution elements. Recent advancements in high pressure die casting technology have led to the application of heat treatments of Al–Si–Cu–Mg alloy products to reduce fuel consumption and satisfy customer needs. Although attempts to reduce CO2emissions have focused on fuel consumption in cars and fuel efficiency regulations have become increasingly strict in recent years, CO2discharged from production lines should also be reduced without adversely affecting the properties of the product. Heat treatments for artificial aging after solution treatment (T6 treatment) and after casting (T5 treatment) are CO2discharge sources, which together with a holding furnace account for >80 % of the CO2discharged during the casting process."

THE development of Reserve Mining Company's pelletizing practices began in 1949 in a pilot plant located at Ashland, Kentucky. Three years later the participating companies -Armco Steel Corporation, Cleveland Cliffs Iron Mining Company and Republic Steel Corporation concluded the work and the small plant was shut down. Oglebay Norton and Company was the operating manager and Armco Steel Corporation furnished labor and services. Arthur G. McKee and Company were the designers and constructors. The equipment flow sheet that was employed in that pilot operation is shown in Figure 1. This was Reserve's first step from the laboratory work per-formed by the Mines Experiment Station of the University of Minnesota in developing a commercial operation. The plant used New York state concentrate, purchased from Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation's Benson Mine. This concentrate, minus 14 mesh, 64.3 per cent Fe, 5.7 per cent Si02, was processed at Ashland to 80 per cent minus 325 mesh in conventional ball mill, classifier, thickener, filtering

"The Marvast monazite deposit is located 35 kilometres south - southwest of Marvast in Yazd province of Iran. A representative sample weighing approximately 10 tons was prepared to study the amenability of the ore to physical beneficiation. The size fraction of +1000 µm was removed due to low monazite content and the –1000 µm size fraction was concentrated by the gravity-classification-magnetic methods. According to the results of sample characterization, the representative sample contains 220 ppm REO that is contained in monazite. It was concentrated to 41.5% REO by the above mentioned methods. The recovery of REO in the monazite concentrate was 41.5%.INTRODUCTIONRare earth elements are critical metals in many countries (Gupta, 2005; UK Geological Survey, 2011). Increasing application of these metals in hi-tech industries and price fluctuation caused by Chinese production policy has led other countries to focus on their local resources (UK Geological Survey, 2011). In this case, Iran is not an exception.REE mineralization in Iran is mainly located in the central zone. Regarding the exploration data, these deposits are divided into two categories. The first group is iron ore deposits in which the REE are carried by phosphate minerals. The other group is placer deposits where monazite is the major mineral of the deposit. The Marvast placer deposit is one of these types of deposit (Daliran, 1990; Mokhtari, 2008; Torab, &Lehmann, 2007; Alipour, 2014)."

In the course of the hydrothermal refining of copper-nickel products containing covellite, oxidation of Fe2+ ions by the CuS?Cu2+ pair takes place, and iron is precipitated as hematite. Lower copper concentrations in the solution and higher solution acidity lead to the partial oxidation of sulphide sulphur, whereupon hematite is reduced by covellite causing iron to go back in solution. It is demonstrated that in the process of hydrothermal treatment of the covellite-containing solid product in pure water covellite oxidises millerite to polydymite (Ni3S4). Formation of polydymite during the process of refining seems to be due to millerite oxidation both by covellite and the CuS?Cu2+ pair.

"Low back pains account for about 13 per cent of all compensation claims made to the Quebec Workmen's Compensation Commission and cost the employers a sum exceeding ten million dollars. The frequency and cost of these health problems in Quebec metal mines are proportional to the provincial trends. An elaborate review of the literature on the causes, nature and prevention of low back pain is made in this presentation. A prevention program for low back pain has been designed in cooperation with a team of seven medical specialists and two physiotherapists for the Quebec metal mines. The program is especially designed for persons who have had low back pain, in order to prevent a recurrence, and for persons beginning to feel chronic difficulties. It is based on existing programs at the Hawthorne Plant of Western Electric Company and at Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing, but it requires a much different approach because of the nature of medical care available at the mining sites. The program is difficult because it involves a change of attitude for every employee and every supervisor. The program, so far, is beneficial because several men are now seriously engaged in an active program of reconditioning and because the problem of low back pain ie beginning to be seen from a new angle."

This paper deals with coal sampling in general and with mechanical coal sampling in particular. The necessity of obtaining representative samples is emphasized. Other sections of the paper are devoted to the design and selection of automatic samplers, with a consideration of the three main types, and the testing, operation and maintenance of these samplers. The cost of the installation of an automated sampling system must be related to the value of the material to be sampled, to the volume of coal involved, and to the savings in labour and economy which can be achieved. Introduction T HE Committee?:; on Coal Sampling of the Coal Study Subsection, Thermal Power Section (Eastern Zone), Canadian Electrical Association, was established in November, 1963, to "study the various problem areas of coal sampling." The first undertaking of the Committee was to at-tempt to survey the problem areas of coal sampling through an evaluation of coal sampling difficulties as experienced at both the plant design and operational levels within the electric utilities represented on the Committee. Our recent studies revealed that the sulfide minerals in contact with water during grinding produced hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) where the amount of H2O2 production by the minerals found to be in the order of pyrite > chalcopyrite > sphalerite > galena. The H2O2 effect on the oxidation of pulp components and its influence on the concentrate grade and recovery in flotation have been studied and the results have been presented and discussed in this paper. Studies have also been carried out to build correlation between percentage of pyrite in the concentrate, grinding conditions and concentration of OH•/H2O2 in the pulp and as well of controlling the formation of these species through known chemical means for depressing the generation of the oxidant. Flotation tests using a complex sulfide ore with the same reagent scheme that is being used at Boliden concentrator in Sweden but with the addition of i) collector and depressant, ii) Na2S reductant and iii) inorganic (EDTA) and organic (TETA) surface modifiers, during grinding stage have been performed to judge the beneficial or detrimental role of H2O2 on the selective flotation of sulfides. The results demonstrate that the selectivity of metal sulfides against pyrite increases with increasing generation of H2O2 in the pulp liquid. H2O2 is also found to be a better oxidant in chalcopyrite-galena flotation separation than the commonly used K2Cr2O7.

The subject of capital and the Canadian mining industry is so broad as to be impossible of comprehensive treatment in brief form. The purpose of the present paper therefore will be only to outline in a meagre and somewhat sketchy way the nature and extent of the mineral industry in Canada and to point out those features which are likely to be of general public interest. Canada's mineral industry has a long and creditable production record. The? value of the output per capita rose from $2.23 in 1886 to a maximum of $26.40 in 1920 and the value of the products from ten million dollars in the former year to almost two hundred and twenty-eight million dollars in 1920. Compared with other primary industries and on the basis of the value of production, mining held third place in Canada in 1920, the premier position going to agriculture and the value of forestry production placing that industry second in the list. In the mineral industry, between six and seven thousand properties are operated annually giving employment to up- wards of sixty thousand employees to whom about seventy-five million dollars is paid in salaries and wages. During 1923, seventeen mineral products reached a production value of one million dollars or over in Canada and in order of the values assigned these were: coal, gold, nickel, cement, cop-per, silver, clay products, lead, asbestos, natural gas, stone, zinc, lime, cobalt, sand and gravel, gypsum and salt.

IT can be truly stated that no branch of the engineering industry has progressed more rapidly in the last few years than that of welding. In spite of depressed economic conditions, this industry has continued to advance along scientific lines, replacing the old hit-and-miss method of welding. The development work is intensive, and increased activity is recorded in every sphere of the industry, new applications of existing methods, together with new processes, being added to those already proved in practice. The general acceptance of the welding processes can be measured by their utilization as a manufacturing tool in the metal-working industries. Many manufacturers have partially or wholly adopted welding. These concerns have on their staffs welding specialists, design engineers, and metallurgists, who are qualified to design and supervise the manufacture of welded parts, at a considerable saving to the purchaser. The steady, consistent, and sound growth of welding is based upon investigation of the fundamentals of the various processes, together with their proper application. The classification of welding processes varies in different countries. In Europe, they are divided into two main classes, namely, heterogenous and autogenous. In the former, the parts are joined, as a ruler without melting the edges, and by using as filler a metal different from that of the object welded. Such welding differs from soldering and brazing in that higher temperatures are required to effect the union of the parts. In autogenous welding, the parts are joined by melting of the edges, with or without the addition of a material similar to the parts being joined.

"DEFINITION OF THE REGION AND ITS BOUNDARIESTHE EXPOSED PART OF THE GRENVILLE PROVINCE is the southeastern part of the Canadian Shield, characterized by crystalline rocks with K-Ar ages of about 1,000 million years. Its Canadian portion is bounded on the southwest by Georgian Bay •and by Paleozoic sediments south of a line passing through Orillia and Kingston, on the southeast by the St. Lawrence River valley and the north shore of the Gulf of the St. Lawrence, on the east by the coast of Labrador and on the northwest by the Grenville front, a linear tec-tonic feature that is a metamorphic transition zone and/or a fault. Rocks located to the southeast of the front have younger K-Ar radiom€tric ages than rocks located to the northwest of it.The region is formed of complexly deformed and highly metamorphosed crystalline rocks and in part differs from other areas of the Canadian Shield by the presence of large amounts of crystalline limestone and bodies of anorthosite."

Of the f ive Canadian cement producing regions- Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario, Prairie and Pacific-Ontario has the greatest capacity and normally produces the most cement. However, during the last 5 years the greatest activity within the industry in Canada has been in the Prairie and Pacific regions where major capacity increases have taken place. Most Canadian cement companies produce normal Portland, high-earlystrength Portland and sulphate resisting Portland cements. Some companies also manufacture moderate Portland cement, and low-heat-of-hydration Portland cement. Escalating energy costs highlight the need for technology research into more energy-efficient equipment for the energy-intensive cement industry. The industry is well integrated and plants are well situated to support construction in Canada. Expansion into the United States has become common during the past decade.

WE assemble again today in this comfortable, hospitable Inn to begin this, the 58th, Meeting of our Society. It is just a year ago when last we met but that year was, probably, the most portentious year in the whole history of mankind. In that year, the German 'Atlantic Wall' was broached, the Rhine was crossed, and Germany, as a Nation, has ceased to be. The agony of Europe is over; convalescence may be, probably will be, slow. But blood no longer flows in Europe. Time will heal the sores, cover the scars, regenerate the industries, rebuild the cities, and re-establish the people. True, the war of all wars is not yet over. True, a bloody conflict remains . But, the power of the United Nations now converges on one target. The rain of blood will be heavy. We can hope the storm will be short. The sun is on the horizon. The light of peace 1s in the sky. What of that Peace? Are we ready for it? Have we a 'sure foundation ' for our future world? Are the footings under that foundation broad and substantial? Can we look forward with confidence to a lasting peace and a fruitful life? The United Nations, even as this is being written, are in conference in San Francisco, placing the footings, rearing the foundations for a world edifice. There are bickerings; there are jealousies. The world is tired, and a tired family always squabbles. We can, we must, believe that the decisions they make, the edifices they rear, will be better than anything we each could effect separately. It will be a compromise, probably; it will carry things that will hurt us, just as it will carry things that will hurt others. We can, we must, believe that the good of the whole is a greater good than the good of the part. Each Nation within the United Nations must sacrifice something, each part of each Nation must sacrifice something, each individual within each part of each nation must contribute something, if the whole is to be wholesome. Sacrifice and contribution must be the order of the day if the New World we are about to build is to be worth while. What of Nova Scotia? The world has travelled far in the last year; how far has Nova Scotia gone? Canada has preparations for the Peace under way; what has Nova Scotia done? Is Nova Scotia preparing counter measures for the sacrifices it must make? Is each of us ready to contribute his share?

"At its plant in San Juan, Peru, Marcona Mining Company operates two grate pelletizing furnaces for the agglomeration of 3.5 million long tons of magnetic concentrates annually. Line One, installed in 1963, was built by Lurgi as a downdraft process furnace utilizing a furnace fan for the recuperation of hot gases from the cooling zone. This line was modified in 1966 to include both updraft drying and downdraft drying, and the original roof burners were converted to side-wall burners. Line Two, a Dravo-Lurgi furnace with an annual capacity of 2.4 million long tons, was built in 1966. This line, in contrast to the modified Lurgi furnace, employs direct recuperation of hot gases from the cooling zone and utilization of process gases from the firing zone for updraft drying.At its plant in San Juan, Peru, Marcona Mining Compa-ny operates two grate pelletizing furnaces for the agglo-meration of 3.5 million long tons of magnetic concentrates annually. This modification also permitted utilization of monolithic refractory in place of pre-fired shapes, thereby improving over-all furnace availability and reducing refractory stock requirements from 154 different shapes to 18.Data are presented to compare operating performance of the Dravo-Lurgi furnace and the modified Lurgi furnace. These data show 30 per cent lower fuel oil consumption and 10 per cent higher capacity per unit grate area for the Dravo-Lurgi furnace, which also averages higher availability due to greater operating flexibility."

"Shales play a major role in the stability of slopes, both natural and engineered. This paper attempts to provide a review of the state-of-the-art in shale slope stability. The complexities of shale terminology and classification are first reviewed followed by a brief discussion of the important physical and mechanical properties of relevance to shale slope stability. The varied mechanisms of shale slope stability are outlined and their importance highlighted by reference to international shale slope failures. Stability analysis and modelling of anisotropic rock slope masses are briefly discussed and the potential role of brittle rock fracture and damage highlighted. A short review of shale slopes in open pits is presented.INTRODUCTIONShales have been stated to form approximately 58% of sedimentary rock so it is not surprising that they are frequently encountered in both natural and engineered slopes. They represent challenging environments for slope stability due to the wide variation in their engineering properties, their changing behaviour with time due to geomorphic processes and the variation in the failure mechanisms as a function of both stratigraphy and tectonics. An extensive body of literature exists on the terminology and classification relevant to shales; it is not possible in the scope and length of the current paper to review these works in detail and the reader is referred to Farrokhrouz and Asef (2013), Bell (2000) and Goodman (1993) for detailed discussions. It is arguably the case that no universally accepted classification of shales exists today and depending on the field of application the terminology varies widely. Shales in slope stability, for the purpose of this keynote paper, are taken to include material varying in properties from weak rocks to soils and therein lies one of the most challenging aspects in shale slope characterisation for engineering purposes. They have been classified as “rock-like” or “soil-like’, (Underwood 1967) or compacted and cemented, Table 1, Yagiz (2001). Classifications have considered numerous factors including composition, cementation and a wide range of engineering properties.The propensity of shales to degrade with time due to geomorphic processes has resulted in an important aspect in their classification, that is, the attempts to incorporate slaking, durability and swelling and softening behavior through purpose developed testing methods (Gamble 1971, Morgenstern and Eigenbrod, 1974). Figures 1 and 2 show examples of terminology used to describe argillaceous materials and some proposed engineering classification schemes (Grainger 1984 and Bott 1986). Corominas (2014) provides a recent classification of argillaceous rocks and their durability relating five stages of slope deterioration to the texture of the rock on Ternary diagrams. No attempt will be made here to discuss the merits of the proposed terminology and classifications, suffice it to say, that the controversy and flux surrounding these issues is a strong indicator of the complexities in the behavior of these materials. In this paper the author will consider slope stability in the materials indicated in Table 1, Figures 1 and 2 without undue focus on terminology. At the lower strength limit of shales the engineer must design slopes using the principles of soil mechanics which may vary from the simple Mohr Coulomb plasticity constitutive criterion to modified critical state models, some even attempting to incorporate softening behaviour in the weaker clay shale materials. Given the transitional nature of shale materials several workers have treated overconsolidated clays and clay shales using concepts such as peak and residual shear strength, brittleness index and softening. Martin and Stacey (2013) provide a useful review of the importance of weak rocks in open pit mining, with mudrocks as a specific member, and note the importance of delayed failure, progressive failure and loosening in the stability of"

The results of complex processing sulphide copper ore and advantages of recovery of copper by vat and heap leaching, sorption, cementation and electrolytic solutions processing and utilization of waste material after heap leaching of copper for production of building materials were investigated. The combined chemical solvents with the additives of oxidizing agents are developed at the KazNTU. The solvents are inorganic or organic chemical reagents, which form complexes of Cu, Au, Ag, Pt, Ni, Sr, Co etc. Recovery of non-ferrous metals from solutions and purification of industrial waste waters is carried out on the base of using new synthetic and natural sorbents (from local raw materials) which are able to bind ions in both cationic and anionic forms depending on type of ligands and external conditions. Optimum parameters of copper sorption were determined. The developed wasteless technologies of copper extraction from sulphide ores with usage of new non-toxic solvents and accessible sorbents with full recycling of water are tested in pilot scale heap leaching, and are recommended as the ecological, economical and practical alternative to traditional methods.
