When Dame Nature shook her horn of plenty and distributed her bounties over the face of the earth, she blessed the Pacific coast with many riches, but with these she added many offsetting disadvantages or handicaps, designed, no doubt, to effect a proper balance between wealth and economy. Nowhere is the application of the law of compensation more aptly illustrated than in the matter of fuel and power resources. A glance at the map of the Pacific northwest will show that west of the Coast Range batholith we are bounteously supplied with coal, with timber, with water power, and with tributary resources of oil from California. Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, all contain large resources of coal; Oregon and California to a lesser degree, but, compensating the golden state for its deficiency in this respect, oil was placed in the treasure ,chest. Timber, of wide variety and in lavish quantity, covers the forests from tidewater to mountain slope, and within this protected watershed area flow streams which give the Pacific coast states the largest single share of the potential water-power resources of the country. Something over 40 per cent. of the total estimated horsepower of the United States is to be found in the Pacific states, and British Columbia has 15 per cent. of the total for Canada; but of this total less than 10 per cent. has been developed.

"The original segmented intercell Optibar succeeded in reducing the magnitude and occurrence of short circuits. It also improved the specific energy consumption of the process. This paper expands the load current source concept introducing a triple segmented bar. This new bar adds immunity to dirt contacts and open circuits. Moreover, it further improves the standard deviation of current densities. As compared with industrial practices this development should accomplish an 8% specific energy reduction. Also, a plant implemented with BBS should be able to work with 12.5% higher process currents than Walker without compromising the operation.INTRODUCTIONIn 2011 the technology based on current mode was implemented at industrial scale. The success of this technology moved CIM Magazine (Lanktree, 2011) to write in the Jan 2012 issue an upfront story of this technological innovation. To cover the story, the technical reporter Graham Langtree was appointed by Peter Braul Editor of the upfront section. The article tells that “More than 40,000 tonnes of copper have been refined in a year-long test run of Optibar Inc.’s new technology at Barrick Gold’s Zaldívar copper plant in northern Chile. The new segmented intercell bars being used in the Compañía Minera Zaldívar refinery have slashed energy costs, reduced short circuits during refining and allowed the production of heftier, purer sheets of copper – gains that all promise to boost the plant’s margins. A copper refining tank house containing the cell circuits typically consumes 2,000 kWh of electricity to produce a single tonne of grade-A copper. Yet, monitoring the energy efficiency of the Optibar technology after increasing the weight of harvested copper sheets, the project’s engineers recorded a 92 kWh-per-tonne cut in energy consumption, a savings of 4.6 per cent. “Today, with the power prices we have, Optibar technology represents a potential savings for the whole plant of US$1.5 million per year,” says Robert Mayne- Nicholls, executive general manager of Barrick Gold’s Chilean operations.”"

"Abstract - The Meadowbank gold deposits are hosted by a series of polydeformed and metamorphosed auriferous iron formations located in the Neoarchean Woodburn Lake group, western Churchill province, Nunavut. The supracrustal rocks in the Meadowbank area consist of a thick sequence of intermediate-composition volcanic rocks with intercalated iron formation, ultramafic volcanic rocks, and quartzite to quartz arenite. U-Pb geochronology gives an interpreted age of 2711 ± 3 Ma for the host strata at Meadowbank.The intermediate volcanic rocks are predominately volcaniclastic and have a geochemical composition that is consistent with an active continental margin setting. Iron formation deposition was coeval with the intermediate volcanism, as indicated by incorporation of volcanic detritus in the chemical precipitate. The geochemistry of the iron formation indicates that it precipitated from a fluid that at one time was at high temperature (>250°C), reducing, and likely acidic. Intercalated ultramafic rocks rarely show spinifex textures and have trace element ratios that are consistent with mantle plume-related undepleted mantle asthenosphere, likely recording episodic mantle upwelling associated with rifting in an active continental margin. The contact between the ultramafic volcanic rocks and the overlying quartz arenite is a disconformity marked by a quartz pebble conglomerate. However, similar geology on the structural hanging wall and footwall of the contact suggests that the conglomerate does not represent a significant hiatus in deposition, and is more likely a prograding terriginous siliciclastic unit.Three metamorphic events are recognized. The first, M1, is a cryptic greenschist facies event that is pre-D2. The second event, M2, is a mid-greenschist to amphibolite facies, syn-D2 event. M3 is the last event recognized, and is a post-tectonic greenschist facies event that is regional but inhomogeneous in extent, possibly reflecting thermal aureoles around post-tectonic 1.7 to 1.8 Ga Nueltin granites. The structural geology of the area is complex with four phases of deformation recognized, two of which had a significant effect on the geometry of the deposit. All of these regional events are interpreted as Paleoproterozoic in age. Relationships between deformation fabrics and mineralization, as well as the overall geometry of the mineralized envelopes, suggest that the deposit formed during syn- to late-D2. Superimposed on the mineralization are D4 structural elements that postdate gold mineralization.The main control on gold mineralization is replacement of magnetite by pyrrhotite and pyrite in high-strain corridors. The composition of amphiboles and chlorites associated with gold mineralization is remarkably consistent and shows no spatial or temporal variation, suggesting that it was buffered by the iron-rich nature of the host rocks. The bulk metasomatic effect on the intermediate volcanic rocks is characterized by the addition of K2O and the loss of CaO, Na2O, and MgO, with little variation in the total iron content. The elemental losses are likely the result of destruction of feldspars, stilpnomelane, and ferroactinolite, which are relatively common in the unmineralized rocks, and the formation of sericite, chlorite, and grunerite."

"IntroductionSULPHUR production in Canada from all sources for the year 1953 amounted to about 375,000 tons. Except for 16,000 tons of elemental sulphur derived from natural gas, this production was in the form of by-product pyrites, liquid sulphur dioxide, and sulphuric acid. In the same year, Canadian industry imported 359,000 tons of elemental sulphur from the United States. The cost, including transportation charges, to Canadian consuming plants ranged from $35.00 to $45.00 per long ton, depending upon location.Although most of the sulphur consumed is used in the oxidized form it is often most convenient to buy sulphur in the elemental form, and convert it to sulphur dioxide or sulphuric acid in situ as required. This is because elemental sulphur is easily shipped and stored, weighs only half as much as an equivalent quantity of sulphur dioxide and one-third as much as the corresponding quantity of sulphuric acid, and is readily converted to these forms in a sulphur burner. A process, therefore, which could economically recover elemental sulphur from sulphide ores would be most attractive.Since the turn of the century, notable improvements have been made in extractive metallurgy, but until recently only limited attention has been paid to the possibilities of elemental sulphur recovery. This has been due to the plentiful supplies of cheaply mined Frasch sulphur which have been available on the world markets."

"14.1. INTRODUCTION1The boilerplate of an agreement is not a single provision, but a series of provisions that are expected in “every agreement”. They are sometimes also referred to as the “lawyer’s provisions”. Many businessmen consider the boilerplate to be superfluous and, to some extent, window-dressing by the lawyers – even legalese. They will often offer advice to the effect that it can “pretty well be ignored”. Such advice could not be more wrong.Most boilerplate provisions are essential parts of every agreement. Some may be part of a “standard package” and may have little relevance to the agreement at hand, but these are the exception rather than the rule. The exceptions should not be treated as justification for giving all these provisions short shrift. The boilerplate should receive the same review, consideration, and negotiation as the provisions that set forth the business deal. It is often these provisions that make the deal work or that are turned to at the time of disputes. If they are inadequate, as they sometimes are (unfortunately, some draftsmen are also loath to review or update their standard boilerplate provisions or to tailor them to the deal at hand), they can create problems, rather than offer solutions. Such problems can be costly and time-consuming for the parties to address. Inadequate or incomplete provisions may ultimately be one of the reasons for the parties to turn to the courts to settle their differences. On the other hand, good boilerplate provisions can help keep them out of the courts.One of the principal objectives of an agreement should be to provide procedures, or mechanics, for implementing agreed principles and for the parties to follow to settle their differences, real or perceived, without going to the expense and disruption of a lawsuit. An agreement should aim to keep the parties away from the courts, not serve as a springboard to the courts. It must nevertheless be acknowledged that, if there is a major falling-out among the parties to an agreement, the chances are that, however carefully the provisions of that agreement have been negotiated and drafted, the parties will end up before the courts or some other adjudicating body."

"Abstract - The Halfmile Lake South Deep zone, Bathurst Mining Camp, New Brunswick, was discovered by Noranda Inc. (Exploration) as a result of a 3-D seismic survey in 1998 and the subsequent drilling of ten diamond-drill cores. The deposit consists of massive, breccia, and stockwork Pb-Zn-Cu sulfide minerals, and is hosted by a volcano-sedimentary sequence belonging to the overturned Ordovician Tetagouche Group. Epiclastic rocks and interbedded fine-grained felsic pyroclastic rocks dominate the stratigraphic footwall. Locally, crystal-rich felsic tuffs and subordinate epiclastic rocks comprise the immediate stratigraphic hanging wall. The entire stratigraphic sequence was intruded by quartz-feldspar porphyritic intrusions, and cut by intermediate and basic dikes. The volcanic and sedimentary rocks can be discriminated geochemically using trace element ratios such as Zr/TiO2 and Nb/TiO2, despite intensive alteration and cleavage development. These ratios indicate that four protolith volcanic compositions exist: rhyolite, dacite, andesite, and basalt. The aphyric and feldspar- and quartz-phyric volcanic rocks are dacitic and rhyolitic in composition; epiclastic rocks have trace element ratios consistent with dacitic compositions. Pearce element ratio diagrams, general element ratio diagrams, and petrographic observations demonstrate that the rhyolitic volcanic rocks exhibit evidence of albite, potassium feldspar, and quartz fractionation, dacitic volcanic rocks exhibit little evidence of any fractionation, and epiclastic sedimentary rocks exhibit evidence of quartz sorting only. Hydrothermal alteration is best represented by the presence of phengitic muscovite and daphnitic chlorite. Minor calcite occurs in the stratigraphic hanging wall, deep in the stratigraphic footwall, and in post-mineralization dikes, and thus is not interpreted to be part of the causative hydrothermal event. Element additions and losses during alteration have been used to determine net alteration reactions, and these have been used to identify alteration parameters that are independent of other forms of alteration and fractionation/sorting, and which can be used to guide exploration. These parameters include: a bulk hydrolysis measure, (2Ca+Na+K-2CO2)/Al; a muscovite alteration measure, K/Al; an albite destruction measure, Na/Al; a chlorite alteration measure, (Fe+Mg-S/2)/Al; a chlorite composition measure, (Fe-S/2)/Mg; a sulfidization measure, S/Ti; and a carbonatization measure, CO2/Ti. With the exception of the carbonatization measure, these alteration parameters define a distinct lateral and vertical zone of intense hydrothermal alteration in the stratigraphic footwall of the deposit, and demonstrate that the epiclastic rocks are predominantly chlorite altered, and the volcanic rocks are predominantly muscovite altered. Within the alteration halo, element additions of Fe and H, and element losses of Na are characteristic. Potassium was added to muscovite-altered rocks, but subsequently removed from chlorite-altered rocks. The results from this study demonstrate that metamorphism and deformation have not significantly obscured hydrothermal alteration signatures."

"Suggestions have been made that the appraisal of mining assets using discounted cash flow techniques should be based solely on proven and probable reserves in reliance upon the widespread international recognition of uniform resource definitions. Following a review of general accepted valuation principles, a survey of the literature and, most importantly, a review of real transactions in the open market, it is clear that valuators should not be constrained by the growing acceptance of modern mineral resource codes. On the contrary, valuation practitioners should be encouraged to examine all classes of mineralization and, after making due allowance for risk, to utilize all mineral resources as a basis for determining fair market value.INTRODUCTIONGreat strides have been made recently in achieving an international consensus on mineral reserve and resource definitions and classifications. The Australasian JORC code, the CIM code in Canada, the SME proposal in the United States and even a proposed code from the United Nations have all brought the objective within reach.Unfortunately, this success has led to another problem for mineral valuators. Certain securities regulators, tax collectors and their ilk have begun to expound on the opinion that discounted cash flow projections carried out to calculate net present values that would form the basis for a valuation determination should be based solely on proven and probable reserves. Injection of biomass into blast furnace as alternative reducing agent is so effective for the purpose of mitigation of carbon dioxide emissions from steel industries, because biomass is considered to be carbon neutral raw materials. Certain amount of Palm Kernel Shell (PKS) is abandoned after Palm oil extraction process. To use as a reducing agent of blast furnace, PKS was carbonized and classified by 100 mesh sieve. To examine the gasification behavior of PKS carbide under the blast furnace conditions, several combustion experiments were conducted using hot model experimental furnace. The experimental results showed that the gasification efficiency of PKS carbide increased as the quantity of volatile matter increased. This tendency is the almost the same for the pulverized coal, so carbide of PKS can be used at blast furnace at appropriate amount of volatile matter that can be controlled by carbonization condition. In addition, the pressure drop of the furnace tends to decrease because the amount of ash in PKS carbide may be smaller than that of pulverized coal. PKS carbide is a suitable reducing agent in that respect.

"Grinding tests were conducted on an oxidized copper-cobalt ore using a pear-shaped ball mill. Twelve mono-sized ore fractions were prepared and wet ground batchwise. The mill was run for 0.5 to 30 min intervals. The shortest interval provided data more closely related to the breakage function (B) because less secondary breakage was hypothesized. Some selection function (S) and B parameters were determined. Remaining parameters were estimated using a population balance model simulator. To evaluate the kinetics model, an unsized ore sample was also milled. Predicted and measured particle size distributions (PSDs) agreed well, suggesting that S and B parameters can be used for continuous operation mass balances.RÉSUMÉ Des essais de broyage ont été menés sur un minerai oxydé de cuivre-cobalt à l’aide d’un broyeur à boulets piriforme. Douze fractions de minerai de dimension unique ont été préparés et broyés en voie humide en lots. Le broyeur était mis en route à des intervalles de 0,5 à 30 minutes. L’intervalle le plus court fournissait des données plus étroitement liées à la fonction d’abattage (B) car d’après l’hypothèse avancée, le besoin d’abattage secondaire était moindre. Certains paramètres de la fonction de sélection (S) et de B ont été déterminés ; les paramètres restants ont été estimés à l’aide d’un simulateur de modèle d’équilibre de population. INTRODUCTIONSize reduction of solids is a very energy intensive and highly inefficient process. It consumes approximately 5% of the electricity produced worldwide (Rhodes, 1998), and more than 50% of the total energy used in mineral processing plants (Walkiewicz, Lindroth, & Clark, 1996). An increase in grinding efficiency can therefore result in significant reductions in operating costs. This often amounts to determining the optimal design configurations for milling an ore sample in a laboratory mill under standard conditions. Prior to optimizing the milling stage, the requirements for downstream processing in terms of particle size distribution (PSD) need to be understood because low liberation and overgrinding will lead to future problems. Once this is done, it is also important to clearly understand the breakage properties of the ore. The kinetics of size reduction in tumbling mills are often determined using two probabilistic functions: selection and breakage (Austin & Luckie, 1972). Knowledge of the selection and breakage functions also enables the prediction of the PSD for a given ore sample."

The Canada Mining Innovation Council (CMIC) Exploration Innovation Consortium developed a 10-year business case for developing new discovery criteria, exploration techniques, and better data management and analysis to improve exploration success in deep, remote, and covered terrains. Within this context, the CMIC devised a five-year project proposal to create improved multiparameter exploration tools to detect ore systems and more efficient vectoring toward high-grade mineralized cores. The Footprints project was approved March 2013. More than CAD$13 million funding was provided through the CMIC-led joint sponsorship from 30 companies and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council. Consistent industry leadership and integration of dedicated industry and academic expertise has the project on track for reaching its well-defined objectives.

"Abstract - Oxide-facies banded iron formation in the Third Portage Lake area is hosted by ultramafic and calc-alkaline volcanic rocks and related sedimentary rocks of the Archean (2.8 Ga) Woodburn Lake Group, 80 km north of Baker Lake. These rocks record at least two phases of metamorphism/ metasomatism. Greenschist facies metamorphism, in the temperature range of 370°C to 520°C and at pressures above 2.3 kbar, has affected all rocks on a regional scale. Later mineralization and alteration of banded iron formation (BIF) and associated volcanic rocks resulted from metasomatic fluids which carried Mg, K, Ca, S, As, Cu and Au. These fluids were confined to ductile to brittle, cross-cutting and layer-parallel micro-shears developed in the thickened hinge region of a shallow plunging recumbent fold. Metasomatic reactions yielded cummingtonite + biotite-bearing assemblages which are associated with strongly mineralized iron formation. Pyrrhotite is the dominant sulfide phase and occurs within ductily deformed iron formation where it pervasively replaces magnetite. Minor fine-grained chalcopyrite and arsenopyrite generally occur as inclusions within pyrrhotite and recrystallized magnetite, and rarely as individual grains. Pyrite is restricted to brittlely deformed iron formation, and to the contact between iron formation and altered ultramafic rocks, where it is associated with quartz veins. Pyrite typically replaces pyrrhotite. Native gold is associated with both pyrrhotite and pyrite, but higher gold concentrations are associated with pyrite. Grunerite/Ca-amphibole + stilpnomelane and sparse pyrrhotite and pyrite characterize weakly mineralized iron formation. Within adjacent ultramafic rocks, metasomatic reactions yielded assemblages of interlayered Ca-amphibole + biotite, and talc + Ca-amphibole + carbonate + biotite. K-Ar geochronology on metasomatic biotite from mineralized BIF yielded a 1791 ± 32 Ma age.An epigenetic model is favored for the emplacement of gold. The age of the gold mineralization in the Third Portage Lake area is uncertain, but may be Proterozoic based on the preliminary isotopic age and by analogy with Proterozoic gold deposits elsewhere in this part of the Churchill Structural Province."

"Rio Algom's Stanleigh Mine and Mill Operation Was' officially started up in August 1983. In September 1982, Rio Algom contracted Estonix International Inc. from Lively, Ontario, to develop and implement two innovative programs: (1) Work Renovation Planning, and (2) Systems Performance Training. This paper deals with the development and implementation of these two concepts relative to the plants technology from start-up to present and the exceptional results achieved. This paper discusses how a small but motivated workforce resulted in the smooth transition from startup to full production. It also deals with how these concepts were applied elsewhere in the organization which permitted a successful transition and downsizing of the over-all operation.IntroductionRio Algom Limited produces uranium in Elliot Lake, Ontario. In the late 1970s Rio Algom entered a contract with Ontario Hydro to supply uranium from its Stanleigh property, which had been idle since 1960. The mine was subsequently upgraded, and a new modem mill was designed and built, commencing operation in 1983.From then until September 1990,Rio Algom had three producing mines and mills in the Elliot Lake area. Quirke mill, with a capacity of 6350 tonnes per day, operated continuously from 1968. The Panel mill with a 3000 tonnes per day capacity, operated since 1979. Stanleigh mill continues to operate under long-term contracts, although at a production rate about 25070 lower than its rated capacity of 5000 tonnes per day.Both the Quirke and Panel mills, although not entirely similar, were conventional uranium mills utilizing crushing, grinding, leaching and ion exchange. As such, and in keeping with the traditional management style, there was a rather large mill operating workforce, which utilized a line-of-progression job classification system."

"This paper presents an overview of Alberta Oil Sands Technology Research Authority's in situ oil sands recovery project at its underground test facility near Fort McMurray. It covers the rationale for horizontal wells drilled from tunnels below the oil sands, the tunnel layout, the drilling program, and the recovery process and facilities. INTRODUCTIONThe Alberta Oil Sands Technology and Research Authority (AOSTRA) has constructed an Underground Test Facility (UTF) in the Athabasca oil sands deposit in northern Alberta, approximately 50 km northwest of Fort McMurray (Fig. 1). The facility initially is to serve as an underground laboratory from which to field test new approaches to in situ recovery of the bitumen (oil) in the Athabasca deposit.The UTF employs mine access to get at the effective exploitation of an oil reservoir. It does so, however, under conditions considerably more difficult than those faced by most other applications of the technology. Because of the unconsolidated nature of the McMurray formation, the development of drilling chambers directly in the reservoir would be prohibitively expensive. Further, mobilization of the extremely viscous bitumen requires intensive steam stimulation with the attendant concerns of large, complex well completions and potentially hazardous operations Over-all, the oil sands presents mining, drilling and operations challenges which push the technology to a new state-of-the-art. The UTF as it now exists consists of:• a 20 000 ha lease with all-weather road access;• 925 m of 5 m by 4 m tunnels in the limestone 15 m below the oil sands at roof depth of 178 m below the surface (Fig. 2);• two 3 m diameter steel lined shafts to a depth of 213 m;• administration and sur face mine support facilities from which to operate the UTF (Figs. 3 and 4);• underground piping systems to transport drill fluids, steam, produced fluids and services to and from the future well heads underground (Fig. 5);• surface steam generation and production handling facilities (Figs . 3 and 4).• a drilling rig and auxiliary systems specifically designed to drill long horizontal wells into the oil sands from tunnels in the underlying limestone (Fig. 6);• an experienced staff to engineer and operate the facility (Fig. 7)"

"PAH compounds have been found in the exhaust from all types of engines burning hydrocarbon fuels . They have also been found in the air over cities and in water. The authors report on a study to assess the concentrations of twelve different PAH compounds in several different environments in dieselized underground mines. In addition, the differences in the PAH levels and distributions in different mines will be demonstrated. Finally, the influence of blasting and the type of diesel engine used as well as the effect of catalytic converters in the exhaust system on the PAH concentration in the mine will be discussed.IntroductionMining methods have been altered significantly in the last 25 years; i.e ., the tools and machinery used underground have changed from electrically operated trains and other equipment to diesel-powered equipment. This has been done for several reasons: 1) economics, 2) convenience and 3) safety. Today, most mines are heavily committed to using diesel equipment.Although the introduction of diesel equipment has revolutionized mining methods and has been a tremendous boon to the mining industry, it has also created new problems. These problems arise because the exhaust from diesel engines contains several pollutants which can be hazardous to the health of the miners. These pollutants are CO2, CO, NO., SO2, oxygenated hydrocarbons produced during the buring process and unburned hydrocarbons. There are two classes of hydrocarbons, of which polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs or PNAs) are a part."

The following notes deal chiefly with changes from steam to electric drives, or, in the case of the Bellevue pumps, from air to electric. Where electric power can be purchased or generated cheaply it can be used to advantage and is generally more economical than steam, especially in places remote from the central power-plant. Nothing could be more simple than the operation of electrical gear. It does not require a competent engineer constantly on the alert, oiling and watching bearings, and maintenance is at a minimum. The ease with which the current is transmitted from its source to where it must do its work is one of its greatest advantages. Transmission losses are very low. Generally speaking, the smaller the plant the lower the loss and 90 per cent, and better, efficiency is easily attained. In and around Bellevue 2300-volt, three-phase, is the standard distributing pressure; our power requirements and the distances transmitted, for the present, do not require more than this. Most of the heavier motors are 2300-volt .machines, which eliminates the cost and possible troubles of step-down transformers, and makes for a cheaper and less bulky motor. This applies to two fan, two hoist, and two compressor motors, the smallest being 75 and the largest 520 horse power. The standard pressure on power lines to all inside pumps is 550 volts, and 220 volts is general for the the tipple. While 110 volts is used for house and office lighting service, it is not economical around and in the mine. No matter what kind of device is used to lock and protect the lamps, they are invariably missing.

IN 1934 Newfoundland, after extravagant operation based on exaggerated ideas of what she had to work with, became bankrupt, ceased to be a self-governing Dominion, and passed into the hands of a Commission. Since the days of Dawson, Canadians have been taught that no country in the world is as rich as their own. This idea has become a religion; contrary views are heresy, and are suppressed even by technical organizations and government departments. Following the alleged habit of the ostrich, we have buried our heads in the sand and have refused to face the facts. This policy of "to have today and to hell with tomorrow" is now bearing fruit. After forty years of operation on the basis of unlimited natural wealth, with resulting over-expansion, wholesale depletion of capital assets, and huge borrowings, we are, now that our wealth has been shown to be very limited, face to face with the status of Newfoundland. Already, in this Province, commission government of bankrupt municipalities is not uncommon. The ostrich is referred to as the most foolish bird in the world. That is not the case-no ostrich ever hid his head in the sand. In the clear air of his home on the South African veldt, an area characterized by low bushes, he is a conspicuous object. When danger approaches, he lowers his head; matches his background, the bushes; and danger passes him by. This leaves the Canadian, with his head still in the sand, to fill the r61e cast for the ostrich. Fortunately, a few Canadians never did get their heads covered; others are getting them out far enough to see what is going on. Their comments are very much to the point. "Nowhere in the world," says Mr. Meighen, "has more harm been done to any country by an exaggeration of its resources and potentialities than has been done in Canada'.

While effective in treating refractory sulfide ores, pressure oxidation leaves carbonaceous matter unscathed and able to adsorb gold from cyanide solutions. Barrick Goldstrike's strategy to mitigate this problem is to minimize contact between dissolved gold and native carbon in advance of the carbon-in-leach (CIL) process. Measures currently in use include limiting carbonaceous matter in the plant feed by meticulous blending of ore, controlling the degree of oxidation in the autoclaves and blinding native carbon surfaces with lauryl sulfate. The presence of residual cyanide and thiocyanate in the process water remains to be a cause of premature gold dissolution and loss of gold by adsorption on carbonaceous matter. This cyanide is introduced by water that is recycled from the tailing pond. Of several treatment options considered, oxidation by peroxymonosulfuric acid, also known as Caro's acid, is deemed to be the most effective. Laboratory and pilot plant tests show that Caro's acid can oxidize free cyanide, weak¬acid-dissociable (WAD) cyanide and thiocyanate, resulting in significant improvements in gold recovery downstream. The process requires Caro's acid at 125 % of the stoichiometric requirement and pH in the range of 9.5 to 10 to accomplish the desired destruction in about twenty minutes. A cyanide destruction plant is currently being designed and construction should be completed by the end of 2005.

"Al-Sc-Zr alloys form thermally stable L12 precipitates which provide high temperature strength. Although the overall fraction of L12 Al3Sc and Al3Zr may be increased by increasing scandium (Sc) and zirconium (Zr) content, such additions may increase primary phase fractions and do not produce desirable secondary phase morphologies. Rapid solidification techniques, such as melt spinning, increase solute atom concentration within the matrix. When the supersaturated matrix is aged, higher precipitate volume fractions at low Sc and Zr levels can be achieved improving high temperature strength. Melt spinning was used to rapidly solidify (107 k/s) a thin ribbon of Al-0.5Sc-0.4Zr at. %. The ribbon was compacted and extruded into 99.8% dense rods, and then aged using multi-step isochronal heat treatment up to 600°C. Precipitation strengthening was evaluated by ambient hardness measurement. The ambient hardness of melt-spun ribbon after precipitation hardening increased by 450 MPa (~67% increment) during isochronal heat treatment.INTRODUCTION Small Sc and Zr additions to aluminum improve strength and creep resistance above 300°C due to tri-aluminide precipitation of Al3(Sc,Zr) in L12 structures similar to ??, Ni3(Al,Ti) in nickel superalloy, but the Al3(Sc,Zr) particles have a Sc-rich core surrounded by Zr-rich shell (Figure 1). The Al3Zr shell limits atomic transport between the Al3Sc core and the matrix and reduces coherency strain. These factors reduce precipitate coarsening rate at elevated temperature (Bergner & Van Chi, 1977; Fujikawa, 1997; Knipling et al., 2011; Clouet et al., 2006).Figure 1. The Shortage of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers I N many parts of the Western World attention has recently been drawn to the acute shortage of mining and metallurgical engineers produced by the universities. Naturally, the reasons for this shortage have been discussed, and various remedies for it have been proposed. In this paper, I want to examine some of them. It is now fairly generally ac-cepted among mining men that the easy attractions of modern urban life have left the career of mining in the metaphorical as well as in the literal backwoods. The industry finds it increasingly difficult to recruit adventurous and intelligent young men; for such men now seek their intellectual, if not physical, adventure in more glamorous occupations from a safe social base in suburbia. The salaries, opportunities and security offered by the mining industry do not complete effectively with the rewards offered by other industries and by commerce, taking into account the social disadvantages of a mining life.
