A cylinder-cyclone system, fitted with a flow control valve between the cylinder and cyclone plus in some tests a variable cyclone spigot, has been used to achieve classifier separations at unusually coarse sizes relative to the diameter of the units used. The method has proved to be useful for low tonnage flows at low pulp density and variable feed rate. The system relies on use of a cylinder unit to reject excess water and fine particles, the amount rejected being adjusted by the flow control valve. The valve also adjusts flow rate and pulp density of feed to the cyclone unit, and can be adjusted to give a separation at a coarse particle size. The system has been used in connection with experiments on the pilot plant at Mount Isa, where a 76 mm system was used to classify feed to the lead secondary rougher circuit at sizes as coarse as 52 micrametres galena equivalent for split conditioning tests. Further tests have been carried out with quartz to assess the range of size separations Possible.

Life cycle assessment (LCA) provides an internationally standardised framework for estimating the environmental impacts associated with products or services (International Organisation for Standardisation, 2006). A particular strength of LCA is the ability to consider indirect impacts that occur at different stages of a product’s life (eg raw material acquisition, manufacture, use, disposal or recycling) and through its supply chain (Figure 1). A wide variety of impact categories are able to be considered by LCA, such as the potential contribution to global warming, ozone depletion, marine eco-toxicity or freshwater eutrophication.CSIRO has a long history of using LCA to compare the environmental impacts associated with alternative mining, mineral processing and metal production technologies (Haque and Norgate, 2014; Norgate and Haque, 2012, 2013). Bacteriophage (phage) are viruses that infect bacteria. Protein coatings on the surface of the phage particle can be genetically engineered so that they bind to inorganic molecules. The filamentous phage particle is about 930 nanometres in length and 6.5 nanometres in diameter and consists of a single-stranded molecule of DNA surrounded by five different coat protein molecules denoted P3, P6, P7, P8 and P9. Peptide sequences in the P3 coat protein that bind to sphalerite and chalcopyrite have been identified. The binding is selective; phage with specific P3 peptide sequences bind to minerals but do not bind to silica or to pyrite. Two peptide sequences in the P8 coat protein that bind selectively to chalcopyrite and pyrite have also been identified. The amino acids in the P8 binding sequences are hydrophilic and thus a coating of a mineral particle with phage having these peptide sequences may render the particle hydrophilic. Experiments are underway to confirm this. Phage are relatively easy to grow and are not living organisms requiring an energy source to maintain life. Phage can also tolerate a range of pH and temperatures. Given this, and the ability to indentify phage coat proteins that bind selectively to a variety of inorganic molecules, phage have the potential to be useful tools in mineral processing and waste treatment.

Chemical species distributions in rock sequences can be modelled using Gaussian processes (GPs) to predict the weight percentage between known data points. This method can be improved by dividing the modelled area into regions of different mineralogy. In the context of many iron ore deposits, marker shales give the initial guidance of where these regions may lie. These shales give rise to distinctive peaks in the natural gamma downhole logs, which are conventionally identified by hand. A GP method has been developed to automate this task.Once the appropriate boundary has been located on the basis of shale occurrences, chemical assays from exploration drill holes are used to find the exact boundaries of interest. These boundaries divide the drill hole stratigraphy into regions of different mineralogy, each of which display their own distinct correlations between the main elements and oxides (Fe, SiO2 and Al2O3). Iron ore shows a negative correlation between Fe and Al2O3, but in banded iron formation (BIF) there is a positive correlation between these species. Similarly, SiO2 and Al2O3 have a positive correlation in the shales and ore but a negative correlation in the BIF. Correlations obtained within ore-, BIF- and shale-dominated regions are therefore better than those obtained using the entire log and can be used to improve the results obtained when modelling.

The Geological Survey of the U.S. Department of the Interior is primarily a domestic agency whose responsibility is furnishing impartial data and analyses to the public, private, and academic sectors of the Nation. The Survey concentrates on earth-science issues, such as mapping the land surface, determining the quality and quantity of water resources, estimating the nation's endowment of fuel and nonfuel minerals, and predicting and mitigating geologic hazards, such as those inherent in the tectonically active Pacific Rim. One of the challenges to managing this program is striking a sustainable balance between concentrating on the problems society wants solved today and investing in the research that seeds our vitality for the future. The Geological Survey's role in the Pacific results from the Nation's geography and the Nation's long standing interest in and commitment to the region. The longest segment of the U.S. coastline borders the Pacific Ocean, one of our states is a Mid-Pacific island chain, our lands are 80 degrees--nearly one-fourth--of the Pacific perimeter, and our Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) underlies significant parts of the eastern, northern, and central Pacific waters. Thus, the program of marine and terrestrial science operating in these areas make substantial contributions to the world's growing understanding of the Pacific realm.

The Carajßs Province presents several volcano-sedimentary sequences that comprise the Itacai·nas Supergroup. The rocks represent bimodal volcanism, and clastic and chemical sedimentation in relatively unstable basins subject to recurrent structural events with subsidence and volcanism. The Grpo Parß Group represents one of these sequences with mafic volcanic rocks that enclose discontinuous jaspilite lenses, with development of large high-grade orebodies (Fe >65 per cent). This unit is named the Carajßs Formation and presents peculiar characteristics compared to other iron districts in the world, thereby departing from the classic Lake Superior or Algoma iron formation types. Owing to the dense vegetation, lack of outcrops and harsh landscape, the structural analysis of the district can only be accomplished by combination of regional field work, detailed structural work on the open pits, and remotely sensed image interpretation, in this case Landsat ETM7, JERS-1 images and the SRTM digital terrane model. The regional trend of the several sequences of the area is approximately N-S and the structure is dominated by a flattened flexural fold system with axes moderately dipping WNW, intersected by several strike-slip faults subparallel to their axial plane. The Serra dos Carajßs represents an s-shaped synform-antiform pair, herein named the Carajßs Fold. This regional structure is partially disrupted by the Carajßs Shear Zone that divides it in the northern (Serra Norte) and the southern (Serra Sul) Ranges and also probably prepared the terrane with the development of pathways for mineralising hydrothermal fluids forming large high-grade massive iron bodies. Syntectonic granitic bodies played an important role in the structural evolution of the area as well. They caused localised ductile flattening deformation and thermal contact metamorphism in surrounding terranes. The Estrela pluton, for instance, was responsible for the discontinuity of the regional trend between the Serras do Rabo and Leste. The Carajßs Province is regionally the upper crustal product of a very shallowly eroded dome-and-keel geometry of Neo-Archaean volcano- sedimentary units intruded by syntectonic calc-alkaline intrusives and overlying pre-existing infracrustal rocks. The lithostructural data suggest continental-margin back-arc basin development and closure in an oblique collision belt, with N-S shallow crustal shortening, parallel to the inferred pre-existing strike of the stratigraphy.

Converter slag assaying 3.7 per cent Cu is produced by Mount Isa copper smelter at a rate of up to 180 000 tonnes per annum.Priority is given to the processing of ore, however concentrator capacity periodically exceeds that of the mine and the opportunity is taken to treat converter slag. It is processed in batch campaigns, typically through the Copper Concentrator, but the Hilton Concentrator has also been used. Slag and ore are kept as separate as possible, since each has an adverse effect on the flotation performance of the other.

The concept of the circular economy has been gaining traction both in Europe and China.In Europe the Ellen Macarthur Foundation see their mission as accelerating the transition from a linear take-make-dispose economic model to a circular model that is restorative and regenerative by design, and aims to keep products, components and materials at their highest utility and value at all times. The Chinese Circular Economy initiative is effectively a sustainable consumption and production program utilising cleaner production, industrial ecology and life cycle management approaches to meet the national challenges of maintaining rapid economic growth while simultaneously enhancing environmental quality and maintaining social progress. A key characteristic of both of these circular economy initiatives is to design out, reuse or minimise the generation of waste.The mining sector, by definition, is represented by linear rather than circular activities, by supplying resources to society. However, being one of the world’s largest waste generators, the sector can adopt similar logic to that of the circular economy to improve its sustainability performance. Waste is a critical issue along the whole metals value chain, from mining waste to eventual end-of-life products, such as scrap steel from construction and demolition waste or the growing problem of electronic waste.CITATION:Corder, G and Golev, A, 2016. The Middle Proterozoic metasedimentary rocks of the Belt Supergroup contain important metallic mineral deposits like the diagenetic sediment-hosted stratiform copper mineralization, including the Troy (Spar Lake) deposit and the epigenetic hydrothermal veins in the lower Belt and Ravalli Group in the Coeur d'Alene district. Magnetite (Fe3O4) is a common and widespread accessory mineral in these rocks and can have multiple origins including ore stage in deposits, mobilization stage in source rocks, metamorphism of red beds and alteration mineral in thin halos enveloping Ag-rich veins in the Coeur dÆAlene district. As shown in several classic studies, the composition of magnetite from igneous rocks varies significantly in response to controlling factors such as melt composition, temperature, silica activity, and oxygen and sulphur fugacity. Therefore, the distinctively different geologic settings within the Belt Supergroup strongly suggest that there may be differences in the magnetite compositions. However, initial microprobe analyses detected no variation in magnetite composition.   Three possibilities may give an adequate explanation for these initial results: 1.      the magnetite formed primarily as pure Fe3O4, 2.      one or more tectonothermal events led to regional scale re-equilibration that affected all rocks in the field area, and 3.      the variations in the composition are below the detection limit of the microprobe.

Kidston Gold Mine is a 3.5 million tonnes per year operation located 280 kilometres west of Townsville, Queensland. Kidston's ore body consists of 44.3 million tonnes graded at 1.79 grams per tonne gold and 2.22 grams per tonne silver. Full production commenced in March, 1985. During the remainder of 1985, Kidston milled 3.77 million tonnes of ore and produced 213,614 ounces of gold.The ore is comprised of granodiorite, polymictic and volcanic breccias. The degree of oxidation of the rock influences the milling capacity and therefore determines the cut-off grade; ore is categorised as oxide, transition and fresh. The milling rates are 15,400, 12,000 and 9,600 tonnes per day for oxide, transition and fresh ore respectively.The ore is treated in a conventional cyanidation/ carbon-in-pulp plant (CIP). The plant consists of a primary crusher, semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball mills, leach circuit and carbon-in-pulp circuit. Carbon stripping and dore smelting are done on site. The major difference between the Kidston plant and other Australian CIP plants is that a cyclone separation and washing circuit rejects half of the dry tonnage as a sand tail prior to CIP treatment. This difference allows the CIP circuit at Ki.dston to be smaller and makes the CIP less sensitive to the grind circuit product size.

An ocean outfall is currently under construction in Christchurch, New Zealand to transfer treated wastewater from the existing treatment ponds at the city wastewater treatment plant to diffusers located 3 km offshore. The New Zealand $85 million project comprises a new pump station and 5 km of 1800 mm diameter pipeline with a design capacity of 6.0 cumecs. The pipeline comprises 2.3 km of concrete pipe installed by microtunnelling and 2.7 km of polyethene marine pipe installed by dredge and lay. This paper describes the consent process, key environmental and community constraints, the tender process, risk provisions included in the contract, the type of contract, partnering provisions, geotechnical design issues and the pipejacking construction activities and issues.

A technique for determining the recovery of attached particles across the froth phase in flotation that relies on measuring the rate at which bubble-particle aggregates enter the froth is used to investigate the selectivity of attached particles across the froth phase. Combining these measurements with those of other techniques for determining the froth recovery of attached particles provides an insight into the different subprocesses of particle rejection in the froth phase. The results of experiments conducted in a 3 m3 Outokumpu tank cell show that the detachment of particles from aggregates in the froth phase occurs largely at the pulp-froth interface. In particular it is shown that the pulp-froth interface selectively detaches particles from aggregates according to their physical attributes.

The applicability of four empirical strength criteria for rock masses, namely, Hoek and Brown, Bieniawski - Yudhbir et al., Ramamurthy - Arora and Johnston - Sheorey et al. has been tested against the triaxial test data for jointed plaster of Paris of Arora. The following modified Bieniawski criterion shows best agreement with the triaxial test data for jointed plaster of Paris: 611=1+B(63)O.825 acm 6cm where a1= axial compressive stress at failure, MPa; a3 = confining pressure, MPa; acm = uniaxial compressive strength of jointed plaster of Paris, MPa; and B = - 3.988 + 9.674 (aim ) -0.185 The modified Bieniawski strength criterion can be used to estimate the strength of a coal pillar, based on a knowledge of stress distribution in it.

The sulfur distribution ratio (Ls) is an expression of the amount of sulfur in slag to the amount of sulfur in molten metal. The sulfide capacities calculated from Reddy-Blander (RB) model were used to calculate the sulfur distribution ratio (Ls). A new Reddy model for sulfur distribution ratio (Ls) was developed for modelling Ls for ironmaking, steelmaking, and secondary steelmaking conditions. Besides calcium oxide, the major component in the ladle furnace (LF) slags is alumina. The Ls was calculated for typical LF slags as a function of temperature and composition. The model calculated Ls values are in good agreement with the experimental and industrial slags data. The extremely low oxygen potential in these furnaces after fully-killed steel is favourable for desulfurisation. For any given slag’s composition and temperature, its sulfide capacity can be calculated a priori. The equilibrium sulfur distribution ratio between this slag and liquid metal in a particular vessel can also be calculated a priori. The Ls for ladle furnace (LF) slags is about twice those for blast furnaces (BF) slags and ten times those of basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slags. The desulfurisation of pig iron in BF and desulfurisation of steel in LF during secondary steelmaking are recommended. Steel desulfurisation in steelmaking furnaces is not effective. Since the model used to calculate the sulfur distribution ratio (Ls) is a priori, it is a useful tool for the iron and steel makers in improving the product quality and optimisation of the industrial furnace operations.

Australia has been an important producer of zinc minerals and metal for many years.Late in the last century Edgar A. Ashcroft, a versatile and enterprising electrical engineer proposed the treatment of zinc rich ores by roasting, followed by leaching to extract zinc, purification of the solution and electrolysis of the purified solution to produce zinc. Residues from the leaching operation were to be smelted in a lead blast furnace to recover lead, silver and gold.Ashcroft (1897-98) and (1898) has.given us a most interesting record of the attempts made at the Sulphide Corporation's plant at Cockle Creek near Newcastle, NSW, to put his ideas into practice. In spite of the best efforts of all concerned, including the use of electrolysis of aqueous chlorides and sulphates, zinc could not be deposited consistently and the project failed although lead smelting continued until 1922 (Woodward, 1965, p. 158). Based on later experience with Broken Hill materials the presence of undetected cobalt in the solutions was the likely cause of the inability to deposit zinc (Kirk and Othmer, 1956).

The Grande Côte Mineral Sands Deposit (GCMSP) is located on a coastal mobile dune system in Senegal on the west coast of Africa. Senegal is a stable, democratic republic, having gained its independence from France in 1960. It has a population of about 12.5 million people. The dunes begin about 25 km north-east of Dakar, the capital city of Senegal, and extend northwards for more than 140 km. The mineralised dune system averages about 2 km wide with some areas extending to up to 4.5 km wide.Mineral Deposits limited (MDL), a Melbourne-based company with over 60 years operational experience in mineral sand mining in Australia, holds, through its Senegalese subsidiary MDL Senegal SARL (MDLS), a 25-year Mining Concession covering the deposits. The main heavy mineral (HM) areas identified to date are, from south to north, Mboro, Fass Boye, Diogo and Lompoul. Within the Mining Concession there is potential to identify additional resources beyond the limits of present drilling. The dunes are mobile or semi fixed, pale yellow in colour and overlie older white marine sands. The dunes range between 5 m and 30 m in height and the mineralised zones, which are essentially flat-lying, average around 15 m in thickness. The mineralisation consists, principally of ilmenite with accessory zircon, rutile and leucoxene. Zircon and ilmenite are the main commodities of interest.Independent consultants AMC estimated mineral resources for the four main deposits in 2006 of 1330 Mt of sand averaging 2.0 per cent HM at a cut-off grade of 1.5 per cent HM. At a cut-off grade of one per cent the resources were 3200 Mt averaging 1.5 per cent HM. All of the estimate was classified as Inferred Resources under the 2004 Australasian Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (JORC, 2004).Subsequent completion of infill drilling, sampling and assaying of the initial mining area, centred at Diogo, was completed in 2008, enabling a final dredge path to be designed and ore reserves estimated, based on a JORC compliant Measured and Indicated Mineral Resource. Infill drilling is continuing in the Lompoul and the results of this campaign will be included in the JORC compliant data base by AMC in April 2010 to enable the 15 per cent year dredge path and mine plan to be finalised.Development studies have shown that the project can be optimised as a dredging operation, with mineralised sand being treated in a conventional floating spiral preconcentrator, wet concentrator and dry mineral separation plant. Engineering work now substantially completed by Ausenco Limited (Ausenco) has developed the combination of some existing plant from MDL’s past operations, and new plant for the complete process from dredging to final product separation and grading. Testwork on a series of bulk samples has determined that the project can yield a high quality zircon product and an ilmenite product along with minor rutile and leucoxene.Work to date indicates a likely output of around 80 000 t of zircon in various quality streams (Primary, Secondary, Standard and Foundry Grades), around 550 000 t of ilmenite plus around 15000 t of rutile and around 12 000 t of leucoxene/secondary ilmenite. Planned zircon output would represent around 7per cent of the total world production, which would make the GCZ&IP a significant producer on a world scale.The studies have indicated capital costs to be in the range of US$400 M total operating cost (after completion of ramp-up) of around US$50 M - $55 M/a. Revenue is expected to be in the range $127 M - $157 M/a.

Before the arrival of the first Europeans, Aborigines living in the northern Flinders Ranges mined ochre - an earthy form of haematite used for pigment.The discovery of copper ore at Kapunda and Burra in the 1840s stimulated the early settlers to prospect further north along the ranges. Many of the new discoveries were not properly evaluated and companies were floated on the most tenuous evidence.

Shear strength testing of rock discontinuity surfaces has been undertaken at a considerable number of open pit gold mining operations in Western Australia, as part of geotechnical studies of pit wall stability. These mining operations are located in geological settings that are typified by highly weathered and/or chemically altered rocks that contain significant structural fabric in which accurate and representative measurement of shear strength is essential.Little of the published rock discontinuity shear test work and back-analysis of failures has been conducted on weathered discontinuity surfaces, at low normal stress levels which are comparable to Western Australian conditions. Available shear strength data are reviewed and the following aspects of shear strength testing are considered:ò the need for shear strength test work and the amount of testing required;ò review of laboratory testing methods and the quality of the results; ò presentation of the test results;ò discussion of the shear strength failure criteria; ò interpretation of the test results;ò summary of test results for a variety of rock types, degree of weathering and discontinuity surface conditions;ò a review of laboratory and field shear strength data to illustrate the amount of variability that can occur; andò a monitoring strategy is proposed to manage the uncertainty associated with discontinuity shear strength.

The topaz resource at Torrington in northern N.S.W is currently the subject of a joint research and development programme managed by Pacific Copper Ltd, This programme has culminated in a pilot topaz calcination plant, located at Parramatta, which, through its operation, will establish the commercial viability of developing this mineral as an industrial raw material for both the refractory and fluoride chemical industries.
