A blast fragmentation model is developed based on the gamma function to describe the run-of-mine fragmentation distribution. The model presented is aimed to benefit from simplicity in application and also to be efficient in description of the fine to coarse part of the blast rock fragments. In fact, the gamma based model (KC-KUM), gives a unit distribution curve, which is made up of two separate equations, covering different fragment sizes in the muck pile. The generated values of the fines to central part of the equation and the central to coarse part of the equation are connected at the 40 per cent grafting point. For validation, eight production blasts, which were specially designed for this purpose, were carried out at an iron ore mine (Jalal-Abad iron ore mine/Iran). Results achieved by KC-KUM and two of the most well-known models. Kuz-Ram and Swebrec, are compared with measured data. Moreover, to assess the models’ efficiency in presenting the best distribution curve, a Logarithmic error method is chosen. Based on the achievements. KC-KUM has the least deviations by the least absolute log error of 0.52, whereas the values obtained for the Swebrec and Kuz-Ram models were 0.79 and 1.34 respectively. Furthermore, the models were applied to predict X80 for 12 production blasts carried out at Gol-e-Gohar iron ore mine/Iran. These predictions were compared with the results from these trials. The coefficient of determination (R2) and root mean square error (RMSE) are calculated. Consequently, the highest R2 was obtained for KC-KUM at 0.837 with the least RMSE of 11.31. On the other hand, R2 and RMSE are equal to 0.832 and 20.19 for Swebrec; and 0.813 and 19.75 for Kuz-Ram respectively. Throughout the Kalgoorlie Field the dominant factors influencing all planned exploratory work are: firstly, the general geology of the district, and, secondly, the lode fracture pattern. Superimposed on these, there are innumerable faulting problems which tend to complicate the search for ore.In this paper it is proposed to deal primarily with the lode fracture pattern and to touch on the general geology only insofar as it affects ore distribution. So much has been written on Kalgoorlie geology that it would be impossible to review the literature adequately in a brief paper such as this. The basic facts of rock types and rock distribution are well established and the broad structure of the field is known in the central portion, though it is less well established towards the northern and southern ends.The latest descriptions of the general geology are those of Stillwell (1), and Gustafson (2), -and these represent the basis of current knowledge.GENERAL GEOLOGY.The field is six miles long and about one mile wide, the long axis trending north-west. The "Golden Mile," or heart of the mining 'area, covers a length of three miles in the southern section, and consists of a central core of quartz dolerite greenstone which merges into uralitic quartz 'dolerite on its western margin. Stringent environmental benchmarks imposed by governments and successful legal challenges in the country of origin have changed the risk profile for all mining companies over recent years. In developing countries, however, where high government standards may not always be in place, direct community action has often made worthless substantial investments in otherwise viable mining operations. Real limitations are therefore imposed from these risks on all areas of mining activity, wherever they may be. Thus, the bar has been raised for all companies developing or operating mines. This paper argues real financial and global industry reputation benefits accrue when all known environmental risks, where practical, are managed. In response, among major international mining companies, as the industry moves towards greater global consolidation, senior management teams have increasingly adopted corporate governance standards including æTriple Bottom LineÆ (shareholder/government/community) sustainability reporting. Sustainability reporting is encouraged by improved international stockholder and financial investor perceptions by contributing to lowered social, community and geopolitical risk which lowers the cost of access to funds as well as improving staff morale and productivity. New mines must not only be primarily financially viable but must operate throughout in a sustainable way. Case studies of some recent mining operations, who have not foreseen or proactively managed major environmental risks, demonstrate the dire financial and personal implications for managers, directors and shareholders from not identifying and managing these environmental risks. Merely having a corporate policy statement on environmental standards or high level Government approvals process for a mining activity does not preclude mining operations from the risk of direct action by local populations or future adverse legal implications from risks which were perhaps identified but not mitigated effectively. Methods and processes for the identification and active management of environmental risks in the global arena are discussed to add a practical element to sustainability, based on the authors recent strategy development processes with governments and major mining houses such as BHPBillition, Rio and Xstrata. Emphasis is placed on proactive, innovative yet practical solutions which, where possible, show positive contributions firstly to the financial bottom line but also the community at large.

The geographical region of South East Asia is variously defined, but generally agreed to include the Asean group - Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia. Other regional countries, such as Vietnam, Laos, Burma, Kampuchea etc. are of course geographically part of the region, however in economic terms, they play a minor role. It is the Asean group that dominates present economic activity and provides the overwhelming opportunity for commercial development. My experience in South East Asia has been gleaned over 15 years of regular travel in the region. More recently, we have established company offices in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia to extend and deepen contacts with major customers. This progressive development is an integral part of a planned growth pattern and will be discussed in more detail shortly. South East Asia is a rapidly developing economic growth centre, a fact which is clearly recognised and accepted by most commentators. An important question is then to be asked: Why has the region been relatively neglected by Australian, U.S. and European industrial supply companies? I will attempt to address this question in the context of industrial minerals and propose some ideas as to how effective sales programs could be developed. Firstly, let's consider the market potential provided by countries within the region. It is reasonable to suggest that industrial growth in S.E. Asia over the past 20 years has been generally steady and in some cases, explosive. Until recently, this growth has predominantly been driven by development of internal (regional) demand. Population growth and rising living standards have ensured that basic industries have enjoyed a solid uptrend in sales and production. The industries which most benefitted from regional economic development over this period were, interestingly, those which we understand to be major users of industrial minerals - glass, ceramics, paper, surface coatings, cement, refractories, rubber and plastics. Each of these industrial sectors has been influenced by different growth stimulii over a 20 year period. Nevertheless, they also enjoy a common feature which ensured an above average performance. All sectors are fundamental to an environment enjoying rising living standards and rapid growth in general prosperity. More recently, internal growth factors have been overtaken by a recognition that manufactured products from the region are competitive in export markets. This comparatively recent development provides the most interesting possibilities for higher value industrial mineral raw materials. Let me explain: For 20 years, industrial growth in South Asia has essentially been focused on satisfying domestic demand. Finished quality of manufactured items was orientated to a developing market more interested in cost than aesthetics or long life. This was reflected in raw material specifications, which often did not exist and at the best were undemanding.

A reappraisal of the stratigraphy, new regional kinematic analysis and thermobarometric data allow a new interpretation of the metamorphic zoning and tectonic structure of the Upper Eocene high-pressure metamorphic core complex of northernNew Caledonia allow a three steps evolution to be proposed: 1. subduction and understacking of previously thinned continental crust elements; 2. subduction blocking due to the crustal thickening; and 3. crustal thinning and extensional detachment during the diapir-like uplift and unroofing of the eclogitic core. Steps 2 and 3 may be partly contemporaneous. Such a model accounts for the thermobarometric and radiochronologic data, and also for the weakness of substratum deformation during the emplacement of the ophiolitic nappe

In one of North AmericaÆs largest mines, which contains more than six active coal-producing faces, mine controllers must meet the complex challenge of adhering to the mine plan while also ensuring customer quality. Fleet management systems (FMS) provide many different avenues to control production flows, from the faces to the various pit crushers. Nonetheless, mine controllers must balance a variety of factors such as unplanned downs, differing customer demands, their own daily key performance indicators (KPIs) related to equipment utilisation, among others. Deviating from the short-term mine plan is the most common means of balancing the other factors, since adherence to the plan is traditionally only measured during the weekly variance meeting with engineering staff. However, such deviation may be one of the most costly responses, as long-term scheduling issues may arise such as multi-face dead-heading or insufficient stripping. This paper focuses on the development of a system for real-time adherence to mine plan within a control room environment. This system is part of a larger blending-focused, multi-million dollar project with elements of a centralised remote control room, developed at the University of ArizonaÆs Mining Information Systems and Operations Management (MISOM) Mine Control Center (MC2). The mine plan (MPL) component of the overall blending system integrates both historical and real-time FMS data with mine plan requirements directly sourced from original systems (no additional input required). The measures, displayed largely as graphs, have tools to help controllers manage the production to facilitate adherence to the plan. Some measures are designed to motivate crews to perform by inciting competition between crews, softened through a study of the controller culture. The MPL component was deployed at the mine, and the before and after deployment adherence was measured. This paper discusses the technical development of the new tool, its deployment, and an ethnography (study of culture) to understand controller motivation.

AND INTRODUCTION The Lochiel coal deposit, a large Tertiary soft brown coal deposit in the mid north of South Australia, is currently being investigated by the Electricity Trust of South Australia (ETSA) as a potential source of fuel for a base load power station. Feasibility studies indicated that the proposed dragline method of overburden removal was viable but economically sensitive to both highwail and dump batter angles. The unusual properties of the unconsolidated overburden sediments and the groundwater regime posed a number of intimately related hydrogeological and geotechnical questions which were addressed before and during the excavation of a trial pit. All strata at Lochiel are of soil strength, and artesian aquifers occur above and below the coal. From the initial evaluation of the deposit a number of hydrogeological questions were defined. These related to the rate at which the pore pressure in the silts is reduced by dewatering, the extent of the reduction in pore pressure due to prestripping, and the feasibility of dewatering and depressurising carbonaceous silty sand sequences. The site of the trial pit was selected to answer these and other questions from the basis of a detailed geological, hydrogeological and geotechnical understanding. The trial pit dewatering system simulated a full scale mine dewatering system and included ten pumped wells, twenty drainage wells, and nearly 400 monitoring instruments. It operated from September 1986 to June 1987. The excavation was carried out between February and May 1987.

An approximate rapid design system for tunnel liners and underground structures is presented which permits the effects of structure geometry and stiffness, rock quality in terms of its deformation modulus, and the applied system loading to be entered as data to produce direct designs conforming to stress limitations, optimum reinforcement requirements and restraints on section dimensions. An 'equivalent column' concept is introduced for modelling the rock mass in contact with the structure. Only the rock treatment is given in detail but the results of sensitivity analyses, with reference to rock quality, for a typical liner design are given and these results related to a number of empirical design approaches.

Revegetation at Perseverance Mining's Nagambie Gold Project is an excellent example of cost effective revegetation in the Central Victorian Goldfields. Work has centred on waste rock dumps, vegetative screens, amenity planting and revegetation trials on cyanide heap leach pads. A wetland is under construction and in consultation with farmers, waste heaps were planted with perennial pasture species.The area treated to date is 18 hectares comprising: 16 hectares of pasture and two hectares of trees/understory. Direct seeding and tubestock planting has cost $16,464. Cost effective revegetation demands careful planning from the EES stage onwards. The Government agreed rehabilitation plan should be comprehensive, realistic and above all flexible. This document must be kept in mind during the mining operation.

Gold at Renco occurs in association with pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and quartz and is confined to a series of brittle fractures and fault breccias (reefs) preferentially developed within an anastomosing ductile shear zone. During late Archaean crustal movements both the orebody and the enclosing host rocks were deformed within a series of east-north-east striking, southerly dipping, shear zones. The reefs within these shear zones are now texturally different to those away from the shear zones, and this difference is reflected by differences in the way the gold is distributed in the two reef types. These differences are not taken irto account by the software package currently being used to generate kriged plans of gold grade and reef thickness and this may explain some of the inaccuracies found in these plans.

Market forces, particularly iron ore prices, demand that plant operators achieve higher throughput in the worldÆs iron ore beneficiation plants without compromising yields or efficiency. This means that production cost per ton is of paramount importance and that all major pieces of Processing Equipment have come under close scrutiny to improve throughput at their most efficient performance levels and for the longest possible continuous running time. Without doubt the use of modern engineering standards and materials of construction has contributed to matching these throughput, efficiency and availability demands. However, often not enough attention is paid to the so called æinsignificant elementsÆ connecting this metallurgical equipment, such as chutes, pipes or other conveying systems, and particularly to the sufficient protection of their wearing surfaces. The result can be an unplanned and expensive outage caused by the wear related failure of such components. This paper will discuss:the theory of wear and the multiple factors of material and design that contribute to a reduction in wear; and the combinations of modern wear resistant materials available to todayÆs engineer and how, by intelligent selection and correct application, plant availability can be optimised. Examples outlining how these principles have been applied in South Africa showing some improvements leading to increased plant availability.

Pilot plant work has played a major role in the process development and design phase of the Iscor Heavy Minerals project. The pilot plant campaigns have been aimed at three process areas, namely primary beneficiation (wet gravity circuits), heavy mineral separation and ilmenite smelting. A process development structure was put in place, and the various pilot plants designed and built. A number of pilot campaigns were conducted during the project phase since 1995, and most of the key objectives were achieved. Various other valuable ælessonsÆ were learnt, and were incorporated in the full-scale plant designs, or used to change operating philosophies, equipment choices et cetera. The cost and durations of the pilot runs were significant, and an analysis indicated that the major risk and technology area of smelting has contributed more than 70 per cent of the total cost.

The aim of this paper is to highlight the social aspects involved in the preparation of environmental impact studies (E.I.S.'s) for mining developments. In particular, the paper will reveal that the social information provided in such E.I.S.'s can achieve much more than simply satisfying government requirements. Such information can form the basis of a strategy to deal with the settlement of a mine workforce in either an existing or newly developed community. A strategy of this type can go a long way towards avoiding many of the social problems and related industrial disputes often created in such circumstances. It will also be of significant benefit to the mining company in negotiating its infrastructure package with the local authority.

Relocation into the Lichtenberg open pit mine of about 110 million m3 of sulfide-bearing and ARD-generating waste rock piled up on the surface is the most important and cost-intensive single surface restoration project conducted by WISMUT GmbH at the former Ronneburg uranium mining site. The waste rock comprises for the most part Palaeozoic shales, limestones and diabases with pyrite contents of up to seven per cent. Waste pile relocation began in 1992 and is scheduled to be completed by 2007. The approach used for relocation has been extensively described elsewhere (Jakubick et al, 1997; Hockley et al, 1997; Chapman et al, 1998; Paul, 2003). Following completion of the backfill that will be up to 60 m above the initial ground level, a dry cover will be placed on top of the backfilled mine wastes. The area to be covered amounts to about 220 ha. Design planning for the final cover placement of which is to begin in 2004 had to be based on a comprehensive cost-benefit analysis over and above compliance with legal requirements. The crucial question to be answered in this respect was to determine û in addition to the expenditure required to ensure reuse, radiation protection and soil protection û the extent to which additional time, effort and money were justified in order to minimise contaminant release from the unsaturated portion of the backfilled pit contributing to total releases into the ground water and possibly achieve savings in long-term operating costs for the on-site water treatment plant. Optimisation was based on contaminant balance modelling for the entire site reproducing dominant physical and geochemical processes. Among the specifics underlying the cover design is that contaminant release from the backfilled open pit must not be considered independently of that from the adjacent flooded underground mine and that a major part of the backfilled open pit will also be submerged. Following weighing of cover-related short- and long-term costs it was found that higher construction costs for the various cover options will not be offset by cost savings in the long-term water treatment. As a consequence of pit flooding, even a costly multiple cover including an impermeable layer will only insignificantly impact on concentrations and loads at ground water spill over points. As a result of comprehensive studies and investigations, a combined cover of cohesive soil material from on-site excavation overlain by a 0.4 m thick storage layer to restore natural soil functions for revegetation was derived and submitted for approval. Together with hydraulic measures, this approach is to meet any requirement in terms of radiology, water protection, stability, erosion protection, and reuse.

Flocculation behaviour of six different dolomite samples, four from the Florida mining district, one from Perry, South Georgia and another from New Jersey was examined using polyethylene oxide (PEO) as a flocculant. The samples were similar in chemical composition, however the porosity of the samples from the Florida mining district was higher than the others. FT-IR, adsorption and surface modification by leaching revealed that flocculation was directly related to the presence of isolated hydroxyl groups on the surface. The adsorption mechanism was believed to be hydrogen bonding of the ether oxygen of PEO with isolated -OH sites on the solid.

The challenge of narrow vein mining is to produce ore with as little dilution as possible, at the least cost -commensurate with the increasing degrees of safety being demanded for mine workers by the modem 'duty of care' legislation. Geotechnical factors play an important, if not overriding, role in these areas. The geotechnical factors cover the complex interaction over a period of time, between the in situ and induced rock stresses, rock structures, rock mass strength and the cable, rock bolt and other ground support members. In the Archaean schist belt areas where many of our narrow vein mines occur the pre-mining in situ rock stresses are commonly significantly higher than the overburden stresses. These are concentrated in areas beneath previous open pits and may be highly concentrated in the pillars and abutments of stopes on narrow veins. The presence of high in situ stresses may be suspected from the appearance of drill cores and underground development long before they become sufficiently concentrated by mining to cause damage or bursts. These initial indications are discussed and modem low cost methods of stress measurement are described. Practical and quick methods of analysing the stress redistribution around scopes and other underground excavations are now available and guidelines for interpreting them in terms of rockmass characteristics, stope stability and support requirements are developed with the object of increasing safety, whilst reducing overall costs and dilution.

The research, development and testing of a Blast Control Plug (U.S. Pat. #4,754,705) funded by the U.S. Department of Energy is described. The plug's function is to improve blasting efficiency through the enhancement of stemming effectiveness and thereby reduce drilling and blasting costs. The plug comprises a solid unit placed in the blast hole within the stemming column above the explosive. It is designed for use with back filled drill cuttings or any other suitable material The research and development program comprised the testing of the plug in small diameter holes in competent rock for both bench and crater blasting configurations and full scale field trials in multiple hole and row blasts using blast holes of from 76 to 387 mm in diameter. Test measurements included stemming displacement and velocity, face movement and extent, peak air over pressure and ground surface peak particle velocity. Data acquisition equipment included a Spin Physics SP2000 high speed video motion analysis system, and acoustic and seismic monitoring units. Substantial reductions in stemming ejection velocity or ejection elimination were achieved whilst reducing stemming length by up to 35% over conventional practice. Peak air blast pressures were also reduced by between 8 and 25 dB. A strong inverse relationship between rock face movement and stemming ejection velocity was found. The implications of the importance of stemming effectiveness in blasting and computer blast simulation is also addressed.

Osborne Mine commenced hydraulic filling of three stopes in April 1999. Two of these stopes experienced barricade failures in July 1999 and January 2000. As a result, a review of hydraulic filling was commissioned in April 2000. The design of a trial of revised specifications and practices is in the final stages, prior to the trial commencing in mid-2002.

Depending upon the probability one assigns to project go-ahead, up to $10 billion (1978 figures) could be required for resource based projects in Australia in the next decade. In the past major resource projects were readily financeable against sales contracts. In the future the complexities imposed by such matters as political risk, inflation, currency movements and environmental and other socio- economic considerations on project development costs and returns may require a different approach. This paper addresses itself to the ramifications of providing development finance for resource based projects in the future - and in particular examines such factors as project completion guarantees, sales contracts, protection against exchange rate fluctuations, interest rate structures and debt/equity ratios as each relates to the provision of finance. Life inside the mining family was regulated by the mine. The whistle shrieked the change of shift to the Cornish, Welsh and German miners digging the alien soil for copper at Burra in the 1840s and the deep quartz gold mines at Bendigo in the 1880s.During the golden years of alluvial mining in the 1850s, and later out on the frontier fields of Kalgoorlie and Jarrahdale in Western Australia, the lure of the mine dominated family life. How could it do anything else? The canvas tent, bark hut or weatherboard cottage in which the mining family lived close by the mine facilitated prompt access. The working man of the family attended to the demands of the mine first, and those of his family afterward. Who then organized and nurtured the mining family? The role of the mining wife was multi-fold. She played the traditional roles of home-maker and comforter, raising her children, tending her house and vegetable garden and supporting those friends and acquaintances who had lost children to disease, or menfolk to the mine. Epidemics of measles, the whooping cough or influenza carried away children in infancy or at too young an age. The death of a husband through accident or disease (pthisis was a likely killer) forced upon the mining wife another role, that of provider. When Elizabeth Vigus' husband died in a Bendigo mine accident in March 1880 Elizabeth set up a grocery business to support her young children.' But in other cases the mining wife supplemented the family earnings by part time work, not in the mines for the Mines Act legislation of 1842 forbade the working of women underground, but in auxilfiary occupations which were in demand.2 Ann Mitchell, a herbalist ,found plenty of work in the goldfield towns of Daylesford and Maldon in the 1860s and 1870s.3 So too did Susan Rule and her daughter Catherine who conducted a sewing and millinery establishment in Beechworth in the 1870s.4 The making of the family's clothes was another task of the mining wife and mother.Until the wonderful invention of the sewing machine, this was a tedious and time-consuming task. James Slater Edmonson bought his wife a Wertheim for the sum of 12 pounds in June 1886, just before leaving her and his chil- dren in the Adelaide suburb of Goodwood whilst he went alone to the goldfields of the West. In October of that year he wrote to Louise telling her how he missed the childrens' wondering "whether Slater wore my old shirt now. I always think of him as he sat on my knee at breakfast in that old shirt; and how pleasant it would be if I could rock both of them and sing as I used to do".5
