As this is the first occasion I have had, and probably will be the only opportunity I shall have, of addressing such a large gathering of members and of student members of the Institute, I desire to- express my very deep appreciation of the honour 'you have paid me in electing me to the office of President for the current year. I realise also that such selection is a tribute to the Company which controls operations here, the centre selected for the annual meeting, but nevertheless there is afforded to the recipient a great deal of pride and of pleasure to hold the highest office in what is, in my opinion, undoubtedly the most important engineering society in Australasia.The past year has witnessed an unprecedented and unparalleled event in the history of the British Empire, and I think that we must all feel a wonderful sense of proud patriotism; the whole world was forced to admire the public calm and the dignity which accompanied the change in our Sovereign Ruler, and great tribute is due to the statesmanship of the Prime Minister, Mr. Baldwin. At this time, we should, I think, place on record our prayer, in common with all his people, that His Majesty, King George the Sixth, may enjoy a long and prosperous reign.The meeting at Port Pirie recalls one who did so much for the advancement of mining and metallurgy, especially in Australia. I refer to the late Mr. Delprat, who, as General Manager of The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited, had under his control for many years the smeltery in this centre. As you are aware, he had been elected an honorary member of this Institute, as well as of our sister Institutes in England and in America...

Bio-Oxidation of Arsenic and Stibium Bearing Gold Ores Bio-oxidation of arsenic and stibium bearing gold ores with acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans was studied. The preoxidation results show that the best bio-oxidation technical parameters are the initial pH in the range of 1.8 ~ 2.0, particle sizes under 0.074 mm, temperature in the range of 25¦C ~ 30¦C and rotating speed of the orbital incubator in 100 rpm ~ 160 rpm. The leaching results show that If the ore, of which contain 10.37 per cent arsenic and 36.81 per cent stibium, is not bio-oxidised, gold leaching is only about 41 per cent, after 8 days oxidised, the result is about 76.55 per cent, which improved about 35.62 points. The relationship between gold leaching and arsenic oxidation is direct proportion, furthermore, it needs only partly oxidise and higher gold leaching could be get, for example, gold leaching is over 90 per cent when asenic oxidation is 60 per cent. The results will provide theoretical and technological supports of bio-oxidation arsenopyrite for pretreating refractory gold ores.

This paper on the relation of Granite and Sedimentary Contacts to Victorian Mining will, it is hoped, be of interest to members of the Institute.The broad fact that gold often occurs' at or near the junction of granite with sedimentary silurian or metamorphic rocks has been noted by some Victorian geologists, miners, and prospectors; but the fuq practical value -of the fact does not seem to have been fully realised by prospectors. Glancing at the Geological" Map of Victoria, one can see that many of our goldfields 'are situated at or near the junction of granite with Palceozoic sedimentary formations, and that some of our alluvial fields are on granite. Many prospectors are possessed of this knowledge but when prospecting a contact locality, they would be just as likely to confine their search for auriferous matrices to spots a quarter of a mile on the sedimentary side, as on the actual contact line of two formations.

An oxide ore heap (80,000 ton assaying 2 per cent copper) and a sulphide ore heap (300,000 ton assaying 1·7 per cent copper) are being leached in series in a closed circuit system. The ore is friable and weatherseasily giving severe percolation problems. These were eased by applying liquors at 235 gal/min to trenches 2 ft wide and 6 ft deep along the full length of the heaps.Cementation recovery was improved from 20 per cent to over 80 per cent by regular intermittent agitation of the iron using a back hoe unit.Liquor pH is controlled by acid addition, and iron content is controlled by a bleed-off set according to predictions made from a pH-Eh diagram drawn for the liquor components. These controls, together with acyclic wetting and draining procedure, have raised production from 6 ton/week to 10 tdn/week of 80 per cent copper.

In the extraction of level bridge pillars in the South Mine by square-setting methods the general practice is to work transversely from the hanging wall in narrow sections three or four sets wide to the depth of the bridge-usually three sets. When the working block attains an area of twelve square sets, sand filling is run in, either by pneumatic (Proceedings No. 123, 1941) or hydraulic methods, in order to control the settlement of the general area and prevent the development of undue weight in the stope. Upon completion of the filling operations, or coincident with them, ore breaking is resumed and the transverse section of the bridge pillar gradually reduced. A number of these parallel sections may be working at the same time.In preparing a block of sets for filling a great deal of paddocking is required, both to contain the filling and to preserve access to ladderways and ore chutes which may be situated at some horizontal distance. Detailed landform designs were completed for six (integrated) iron ore waste rock dumps at a Western Australian iron ore mine site to meet closure objectives and to optimise material movements for closure. The designs were based on specific physical and geochemical properties of waste material and the design was undertaken to enhance long-term stability of the dumps and optimise material movements, and therefore minimise closure cost. Construction of the re-shaped waste rock dumps have been completed. Following construction, surface material characteristics were found to deviate from those used in the design assessment. Materials present at surface following re-shaping were generally finer textured than those sampled for modelling. It is anticipated that the embankment slopes may experience increased rates of surface erosion compared to the rates predicted from modelling and used in design. The finer textured material is thought to be generated from exposing finer material that has migrated into the coarser matrix over time or that was not present in the sampled top surface of the landforms. This is due to armouring processes over time and this phenomenon is likely to recur following further wet seasons. The majority of the waste materials present in the waste rock dumps were subgrade banded iron formations (BIF) and chert, which are generally competent and geochemically inert. Some waste material was known to have an elevated risk of erosion but present in relatively small quantities. The presence of a large number of dolerite dyke swarms indicates appreciable volumes of dolerite were produced as waste from the pits. This material has an elevated risk of being highly erodible/dispersive. Clays and shales are also likely to be present in the dumps and are considered to be less competent material (relative to the BIF/chert). The ball mill in closed circuit with hydrocyclones is an industry standard, and well known methodologies exist for equipment sizing, selection and design. However, the potential to improve the capacity of ball mill circuits by replacing cyclones with screens has been recognised for many years and recently has been successfully realised, thanks to developments in fine screening technology. Proper methodology for equipment sizing and selection is required to capitalise on this opportunity, but there is currently insufficient information and few guidelines available on how to design such a circuit. This paper discusses the differences between ball mill circuits closed with cyclones and with screens. A methodology is described for equipment sizing and selection for a circuit closed with screens, and the laboratory testing requirements are described for low grade base metal ores and magnetite ores. An economic evaluation is also presented for a case study demonstrating the potential benefits of closing a ball mill circuit with screens.CITATION:Jankovic, A and Valery, W, 2013. Two outstanding features of the world's young orogenic belts are their very consistently developed suites of volcanic rocks and, it is now recognized, the rather distinctive types of mineralization they contain. Further,it is now known that these volcanic suites exhibit evolutionary patterns, and it is beginning to appear that this evolution in style of igneous activity is accompanied by a parallel evolution in style of mineralization. Specifically,podiform chromite and stratiform pyritic copper ores of Alpine ultramafic/submarine tholeiite association progressively give way to more zincian stratiform ores associated with andesites and dacites, "porphyry copper"deposits developed in quartz dioritic to dacitic plugs, and lead-zinc stratiform ores related to increasingly pyroclastic, rbyodacitic volcanism.This "coupling" is exhibited well in the volcanic arcs - the young orogenic zones-of the SW Pacific which, with tbeir abundance of youthful and commonly unmetamorphosed materials provide an opportunity for investigating, through a petrochemical approach, the possible significance of ores in the elucidation of mechanisms of lava formation. It is suggested as a working hypothesis that in the orogenic (voleanic arc) regime ores are associated with the cale-alkaline rocks because these cale-alkaline rocks are in part generated by exhalative loss, and the ores are among the manifestations of tbat loss.

As an extension to investigations into methods of upgrading the Iitania content of ilmenite concentrate from beach sands using 100 g/day, a small pilot plant treating 23 kg/ day of ilmenite was used.In the pilot plant the iron oxide in the ilmenite was reduced to iron at 1200°C using carbon (coal/char) without melting the material, using a tunnel kiln heating cycle, the charges contained in saggars, The iron was then separated from the titania fraction by ball milling, wet magnetic separation, and screening. The resulting magnetic product was high in iron (about 80 per cent Fe) and the non-magnetic product high intitania (about 70 per cent TiO2).From this trial sufficient data were obtained to enable the preparation of a flow sheet for a plant producing 62,300 tonnes/year total products, and an estimate of costs to be made. This has shown that for an estimatedcapital expenditure of nearly $6,000,000 and annual production costs of about $4,000,000, the cost per tonne of high titania product (76 per cent TiO2) would be nearly $70.

Soon after the Rosebery concentrator commenced operations in 1936, an investigation was begun in an attempt to discover a substitute for cyanide in lead flotation. Cyanide is an excellent depressant for zinc and iron, but it also powerfully depresses the copper, silver and gold bearing minerals present in Rosebery ore, thus allowing them to pass through to the zinc concentrate or final residue where they are of little or no value.The investigation was not entirely successful, but it did indicate that sodium bisulphite or sodium sulphite could be used as a depressant for zinc without depressing the copper, silver and gold bearing minerals. The sulphites were, however, much inferior to cyanide as apyrite depressant.At about this time, I. W. Wark, using the captive bubble technique, had shown that, at the concentrations normally used, sodium aerofloat is not a promoter for pyrite or galena in alkaline solutions (see his book "Principles of Flotation", p. 188). Some preliminary tests on the production of a copper concentrate from Rosebery ore were therefore carried out using sodium sulphite as depressant and sodium aerofloat as promoter.The results of this work were promising but, since Rosebery ore usually carries only about 0·5% copper, there did not seem to be much incentive to carry the work further. Myths and misconceptions regarding cyanide in the mining industry are common. This is not surprising, given the other uses to which cyanide is, and has been put. Unfortunately, the economic benefits, largely due to the introduction of cyanide in towns such as Waihi are often unrecognized. In the current "green" environment, the New Zealand mining industry faces constant scrutiny and challenge. The use of cyanide in hard rock mining is one area which can stir the emotions of the public.   Cyanide can be transported, stored, used and disposed of in a safe manner. The modem mining industry has an excellent record regarding the safety and environmental issues relating to cyanide. Many of the fears relating to cyanide in the mining industry have proven to be unfounded. It is important that this reputation is maintained. This is possible given proactive and ongoing management of cyanide issues.

The additional information that Clarke and Taylor (1982) provide about the important but poorly documented Ardlethan deposit is, of course, very welcome. However their contention that structural considerations, in conjunction with petrology, alter the interpretation of the mineralogical and geochemical data presented previously (Scott, 1981) is not accompanied by adequate supporting evidence. Indeed characteristics of the orebodies studied invalidate their arguments.Heterogeneity between matrix and fragments is not a problem in the South Cherry and Ardwest orebodies because most samples are comprised entirely of interlocking hydrothermal assemblages with a fabric and mineralogy that is uniform through both former breccia fragments and matrix. In hand specimen, the rock superficially resembles altered granite and, as indicated by Clarke and Taylor (1982), a brecciated texture is difficult to discern. In thin section, relict brecciated textures can be observed as localized changes in the grainsize or in the distribution of minerals that outline former breccia fragments (P. J. Eadington, 1982, personal communication).Because of the intense brecciation and comminution of rocks (fragments < 10 mm are usual) in the South Cherry and Ardwest breccia bodies, hydrothermal recrystallization was complete, resulting in homogenization of fragments and matrix. Furthermore, the amount of sample analysed (-100 g for drill core and 2-3 kg for hand specimens) is sufficiently large to be representative of both former breccia fragments and matrix. The Carpathia and Stackpool orebodies, with their abundance of sedimentary fragments, have alteration superimposed on a heterogeneous fabric, and were not studied. Thus the problems of differentiating between fragments and matrix (Clarke and Taylor, 1982) are irrelevant to the particular orebodies described in my paper.Within the alteration halo, which is several hundred metres wide (Paterson, 1976), the very uniformity of the alteration assemblages implies that subsequent, postmineralization brecciation is of only minor significance.Indeed tourmaline pipes in the Ardwest pit are less than several metres across (Clarke, 1979) and produce minimal alteration in the surrounding rocks. Therefore the interpretation of the mineralogical zonation is not compromised by the recognition of several periods of brecciation.

OWING to the gradual depletion of the hitherto plentiful supply of firewood in the immediate vieinity of Queenstown and Gormanston, which caused a steady increase in the cost of fuel for domestic purposes, the Mount Lyell Company took steps several years ago to make available as a substitute electric current from its Lake Margaret hydro-electric supply. In order to make this practicable it was necessary that the cost of electric power for heating purposes should compare favourably with the cost, of fuel, and the installation of domestic appliances brought within reach of the average householder, and efforts have been continuously directed towards this end since the year 1928.WATER HEATERSThe installation of electrical apparatus in local dwellings began with hot-water services, the heating elements being the types then procurable on the market and adapted to meet requirements.These, however, did not prove satisfactory, but the study of their bilure resulted in a type being developed locally which has overcome all difficulties. The first type of water heater evolved was an outside circulation one the element of which consisted of an iron pipe through which the water passed, insulated with micanite and wound with nichrome wire, the latter being covered with alundun cement to keep it in position and prevent oxidation. This was insulated on its outside surface with a layer of asbestos flour, and connected to the hot-water container as shown in Fig. 1. It was found, however, that the iron pipe had a short life, due to a certain amount of acidity in the water, and a copper pipe was substituted which proved very durable. Some heaters with this improved type of element are still operating after six years of use. The resistance wire is run at a very low current density, which ensures durability.

At the inception of the gold-mining industry at Kalgoorlie the small supply of firewood required for steaming purposes was naturally all drawn from the limited local areas, which promised soon to become denuded. With the advent of the railway toKalgoorlie came the ever increasing machinery and steam power, and the accompanying demand for firewood so increased that the fuel contractors began their operations, by following the timber belts along the Yilgarn railway line, and graduallygetting further westward, until at present we find them as far as Woolgangie, 63 miles from Kalgoorlie, and with the regular railway rates, I0. per ton per mile, this maybe considered the limit of payable timber at current rates. Although in the early days the reserve of timber along the railway line must have appeared as incalculable and inexhaustible as that of coal did in Europe a couple of centurys ago, the day is now near us when even this source will fail to meet the demands made upon it, for, although a good two years' supply is available or the areas under the axe, yet it is time to look ahead and find from whence the future supplies are to be drawn. Along the railways we find the zone of felling operations limited for want ofcommunication, and only such portions of the forests as are within six or seven miles of the railway come under the axe at present while virgin forests to the rear remain practically unexploited. It is only in the course of the past sixteen months that the firewood industry has developed...

All development proposals have to run the gauntlet of the approvals process. Major resource projects are generally subject to particularly intense scrutiny. The key element in the approvals process is that it is about making decisions that take into account the benefits or otherwise to society as a whole - the interests of any one group do not take precedence. Most groups tend to see their relatively narrow interests as representing those of the broader society. Each group develops their arguments for or against a project in isolation, and then presents these to an arbiter in an adversarial situation. From this mire of argument and counter-argument it is often difficult to discern just what the real benefits of a project are, and opportunities for agreement and constructive modification of proposals to meet real concerns are often missed. The contention made in this paper is that the inevitable differences between these various viewpoints should be harnessed to help the proponent to come up with a proposal that is clearly of overall benefit to society and which gains approval. It is better to accept that no one group has a monopoly on wisdom in this area and to engender an environment of creative tension in which the pros and cons can be broadly considered and good planning and design used to produce a proposal that has a high chance of success. There are a variety of ways in which this approach can be implemented. Some of these options will be discussed in terms of their likely applicability to energy projects and their potential for success.

Alluvial gold is an ideal exploration tracer to bedrock source and indicator of bedrock mineralisation style because: (i) gold occurs in a wide range of deposit types, (ii) primary composition is sensitive to style of mineralisation, and (iii) it is a heavy resistate mineral that is readily preserved and easily sampled. In regional exploration of the Central Ranges of Irian Jaya, alluvial gold mineralogy has been applied to maximise the information return from panned concentrate sampling and to focus exploration effort. Primary gold is a solid solution of Au+Ag¦Cu¦Hg, ¦ trace Pd, Te, and Sb. In general Ag¦Hg increase and Cu decreases with inferred decreasing temperature of formation, and gold from particular mineralisation styles has signature compositions that can be used as indicators of bedrock mineralisation type. Furthermore, the abundance of alluvial gold is an indicator of the economic potential of a catchment. The convergent continental-oceanic plate geology of the Central Ranges is conducive to a wide range of mineralisation styles. Mineralogy of gold in ophiolite, skarn, porphyry, mesothermal vein and possible VHMS environments is characterised from alluvial and bedrock samples, and the use of gold mineralogy in prospecting at regional scale through prospect definition to drilling is demonstrated.
