The Paranam plant in Surinam (formerly Dutch Guiana) was built during 1939-40 to supply crushed and dried bauxite for the growing U.S. aluminum industry, supplementing production from the Suriname Aluminum Co.'s Moengo works, which began operation in 1922. A subsidiary of Aluminum Company of America, Suralco's total annual production from these two plants averages 2.55 million dry metric tons of various grades of bauxite. Starting in 1941 with bauxite from mines on the west side of the Suriname River, annual production at the Paranam plant has varied from a low of approximately 450,000 tons to more than 1 million tons in 1949. High production rates during World War II and the late 1940's rapidly depleted these reserves, and in 1950 plans were made to mine the known deposits on the east bank of the river, about five miles downstream from the original Paranam plant.

With the increasing military significance of the arctic, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' ice- tunneling research program has been instituted to determine the feasibility of excavating large under- ice openings. Such openings would provide for year- around storage of material and housing of personnel, independent of surface weather conditions. This unique ice mining operation has been carried on in the tunnels at Camp Tuto, Greenland, during the summers of 1955, 1956, 1957 and 1958 by the U.S. Army Snow, Ice, and Permafrost Research Establishment (USA SIPRE), Wilmette, Ill. Supervisory personnel for the tunneling projects principally have been civilian mining engineers and mining engineering students from Colorado School of Mines. They have been employed under contract between USA SIPRE and the Denver Research Institute (DRI) of the University of Denver, Denver, Colo. Laborers have been enlisted military personnel attached to the U.S. Army Polar Research & Development Center (USA PR&DC) , Ft. Belvoir, Va.

Secondary recrystallization was investigated in vacuum-melted electrolytic iron to which 70 pm N was vacuum-meltedadded. The secondary texture is "near {554}<225>" for material cold-rolled 75 to 90 pct, the sharpness of the texture increasing with increased rolling reduction and with decreased annealing temperature. At reductions of 95 and 97.5 pct the secondary texture is &apos;"near {322)(296)". Both secondary orientations also exist as major components of the primary re-crystallization texture. Development of a strong "near {554) (225)" secondary texture appears to depend on the evolution of the Primary texture to a transition texture depleted in orientations near the secondary orientation before the onset of secondary growth. A variety of qualitative experinzents have been used to show that nitrogen is important in limiling primary grain growth. The presence of nitrogen does not seem essential for the establishment of a transition texture, but a loss of nitrogen during annealing may facilitate growth of grains in the secondary orientation. Secondary grains we shown to form initially at the specimen surface. This is not thought to indicate that surface energies are important in the growth process. It is proposed that the quasi-two-dimensional character of surface grains permits discontinuous growth parallel to the surface before secondary growth of interior grains is possible. An earlier study of recrystallization textures in 90 pct cold-rolled electrolytic iron showed that secondary recrystallization occurred after annealing for several days at 700C1 This type of secondary recrystallization, which had not been reported previously, results in the formation of a strong texture, best described by the indices "near {554}(225)". The purpose of the present work was to investigate the effect of various processing variables on secondary recrystallization in this material and determine the mechanism of secondary grain growth. LITERATURE REVIEW An understanding of the mechanism of a secondary recrystallization process depends on knowing: 1) how grains in the secondary orientation come to be in the primary recrystallization texture; 2) why normal grain growth does not occur; and 3) what factors determine the strength of the secondary texture. For secondary growth of grains of a particular orientation, a certain minimum fraction of the grains must be in that orientation after primary recrystallization. This requirement is apparently satisfied "naturally" in certain systems, i.e., when the primary texture obtained by rolling and recrystallizing material initially randomly oriented contains a sufficient fraction of primaries in the secondary orientation. However, in other cases, e.g., {110}<001> and {100}<001> secondary growth in silicon iron,2 it is necessary to enhance the fraction of primary grains in the secondary orientation by rolling and recrystallizing textured material. In the present case, the "near {554}<225>" orientation is contained within the spread of orientations found in the primary recrystallization texture of iron or bbc iron-base alloys. In systems where the main driving force for secondary growth is the reduction in total grain boundary energy, secondary growth is observed only when normal grain growth is minimized. Four ways in which normal grain growth can be limited are: 1) Limitation by a strong primary texture. When a very strong primary texture consisting of a single component or twin-related components develop, most primary grains are separated from one another by relatively immobile small-angle grain boundaries. The classic instance of this is secondary growth into the primary cube texture in some fcc metals. 2) Limitation by precipitates. Precipitates present in the proper volume fraction with a suitable dispersion will limit primary grain growth. The role of MnS inclusions in impeding normal grain growth in Si-Fe is well-documented.5 3) Limitation by sheet thickness. Normal grain growth slows drastically when the mean grain diameter is of the same order as the sheet thickness. This effect has been used to obtain secondary recrystallization in thin sheets of high-purity silicon iron.&apos; 4) Limitation by solute impurities. It is well-established that certain impurity elements in solution can have a large effect on grain boundary mobility.&apos; However, there does not seem to be any secondary recrystallization process in which primary grain size stabilization has been shown to be due to the drag exerted on grain boundaries by dissolved impurities. In certain systems, e.g., secondary recrystallization in silver,&apos; the means by which normal grain growth is limited has not been identified, and solute-impurity limitation might be suspected. In order to understand the factors which determine secondary texture strength in three-dimensional growth, it is necessary to examine in more detail the current picture of general secondary recrystallization processes. Following Cahn,9 it is assumed that the primary grains have a range of sizes and that secondary growth of one of the large grains in this distribution is possible when it exceeds a critical size with respect to its neighboring grains. The critical size depends on the ratio ?S/?p, where ?s is some sort of average grain boundary energy between the potential secondary and the primary grains and ?p is some sort of average grain boundary energy between primary grains. Electric power demand doubles about every ten years, and because of the associated burgeoning fuel requirements, power stations absorb over half of the coal output in the United States. Throughout the 1960&apos;s, demand for coal utilized to generate electricity grew at an average annual rate of 6.5% but coal producers held back greater expansion because they expected nuclear plants to proliferate faster than they actually did. Even so, the growth rate is expected to continue at the 1960&apos;s rate until at least 1976. The continuation of the 6.5% growth rate beyond 1976, however, will require additional orders for coal-fired plants during the early 1970&apos;s. In fact, plants consuming a total of 130 million tons of coal must be ordered in the next few years. If the requisite plants materialize, total 1980 coal output for electrical power generation will be approximately 600 million tons.

(communication to the Secretary*) :-For some time before the publication of Mr. Scholz&apos;s paper, I had been collecting data bearing upon its subject, and I now take pleasure in presenting my results to the Institute in the form of a discussion. It has long been a matter of common opinion among mining-men that mice-explosions are, more frequent during the colder, or winter months, than during the warmer ones, and it is a matter of common knowledge among them that the air-ways and road-ways in most mines are much drier and are more in¬clined to be dusty during the winter than during the summer. In many mines, places which are wet and sloppy in the summer are dry and sometimes dusty during the winter. These changes, of course, can only be due to atmospheric conditions, and are caused by differences in temperature and humidity. Until recently, however, very little attention has been paid to the part that atmospheric conditions may play in mine-explosions, or, rather, to the effect they may have in rendering mine-conditions peculiarly dangerous, and in spreading and rendering more disastrous the effects of what would otherwise probably have been .small explosions. To show the difference in mine-conditions during sunnier .and winter months, I have tabulated in Table I. the results of 24 observations of hygrometric conditions in several different mines at different times of the year. Mines Nos. 1, 2, and 6 are located in the Pocahontas.coal -region, in McDowell couuty, W.Va., the first one being a shaft-mine shaft mine and the others drift. Mines 1A and 2A are drift-mines located in Logan county, W. Va. All of these are mines of fair size, but none of them has been in operation more than six years,

A two year study was made of the waste disposal of the pebble rock phosphate industry. Solid slimes are impounded in large settling areas and the process water is re-used. Clear effluent was not found to be toxic to fish or animal life in field tests or in controlled experiments. Survey: The pebble rock phosphate mining and washing operations in Florida (fig. 1) are along the river basins of the Alafia to the west and the Peace to the east. The elevation of the area varies between 40 and 170 ft above sea level. Effluents from the operations find their way into one of the two river systems (fig. 2), the Peace River which flows into Charlotte Harbor and the Alafia into Tampa Bay, both along the Gulf of Mexico. There are no major industries along these rivers below the phosphate operations. On the Peace River, the town of Arcadia, approximately 50 miles below the phosphate operations, obtains its water from the river. No other communities along the rivers use them as a source of water supply. Small communities, farms, and ranches are located along the rivers and both rivers drain vast swamp areas. Complaints had been received at the office of the Chief Sanitary Engineer, of the Florida State Board of Health,&apos; that both rivers were turbid at various times and that fishing in the Alafia River was "not as good as it used to be." Tests made by another agency on the dissolved oxygen content of the Alafia River revealed that the oxygen content, at times, was comparatively low.= However, it was not shown that the phosphate wastes had any effect upon the oxygen content of the stream. The river waters are normally brown in color due to drainage from vast swamp areas and are very shallow, from 2 to 6 ft in depth. Turbid waters have been noted in streams coming from the present phosphate operations and also from streams along which there are no operations at the present time. It was learned from "old timers" that, when many more companies than at present were operating along both the Alafia and Peace Rivers forty or fifty years ago, no attention was paid to prohibiting the disposal of slimes along the river basins. During dry periods now in some of the river swamps where drainage ditches have been dug, it is indicated clearly that phosphate slimes were disposed of directly into the river swamps for many years past. Places have been observed where there were alternating strata of phosphate mud, leaf mold, and quartz sand. The former practice of indiscriminate disposal of wastes accounts for some turbidity, particularly after heavy rains and washouts and during clearing of land and digging of drainage ditches. During a six months&apos; period in which a large tract of land was being cleared and drainage ditches dug, a small stream (Six Mile Creek), which previously had been clear, showed a turbidity of 600 ppm and remained turbid until the clearing was completed; after which the stream again flowed clear. An interview with the operator of the municipal water plant, which is about 50 miles below the phosphate operations on the Peace River and which used this river as a source of supply, revealed that there had been no taste in the water for the past ten years, other than that occasionally encountered from increased growth of algae. This paper presents two main developments: (1) a short, constantly accelerated centrifuge method of measuring drainage capillary pressure properties of cores, and (2) a new analytic method of treatment of centrifuge measurements to obtain saturation-capillary pressure relations. Toward the first objective, a clever experimental method is presented which is certainly more rapid than previous centrifuge methods. Toward the second objective, a new analytic method is derived to eliminate the approximate method of Hassler and runner. The derivation of this new analytic method, however, appears to be in error. The new analytic solution is developed as Eq. 5 in Appendix A. DR. TILNEY, the great expert on the study of the development of the brain of human beings and animals, tells us that the greatest difference between the human brain and the brain of animals is that man alone has shown evidence of being able to predict the future. Just why he throws overboard the busy bee who lays up honey for the winter, the squirrel who gathers nuts, and the humble ant, I do not know. At any rate, it is nice to be assured by an authority that we have this power of prophecy. My own experience with attempting to prophesy the future has convinced me that our only possibility of being good prophets is to be good students of history.

This paper is presented as a suniniary report of the use of well gas composition correlations obtained from mass spectrometer recordings as a means of identification and determination of reservoir continuity. Conventional methods for detecting composition differences are en-pensive, elaborate, and difficult to obtain. This excludes the use of extensive composition data for most applications. During recent years the mass spec-trometer has come into general use as an analytical tool in petroleum refineries. The use of mass spectrometer composition patterns ir~ characterizing or "finger-printing" the produced gas from a reservoir, presents a novel method for correlatitlg gas samples from well to well. The mass spectrometer provides a trace similar to an electric log. having peaks which represent the abuntlnnce of certaitz hydrocarbons in the well gas sample. Without going further into the detailed analysis the idea has been advanced that these traces or patterns could be used as a means of identifying a particular natural gas. This theory has proven to be essentially correct. The mass spectrometer pattern method is simple and cheap as COi?7pared to other standard methods. It greatly facilitates the solution of reservoir and geological problems in which correlation of well gas Com-positions is a factor. Specific field applications have been made. This paper concerns the results obtained in 465 individual gas analyses from 35 fields and 77 res- ervoirs. In a number of cases it has been found that such data have been extremely valuable in the determination of reservoir continuity. In at least one case, the method was a valuable contribution in tracing a reservoir from sand to sand in a coinplex fnulted field involving n11rnerous gas reservoirs. Field applications are presented to illustrate the possibilities of the method at the present stage of developnient and to stimulate the ernployrnent of this new approach by geologists and petroleum engineers in the industry. INTRODUCTION Identification of producing horizons and the determination of reservoir continuity are often a problem in those areas where dome structures and highly faulted sands are encountered. To complicate the picture further, there may be numerous sands, one on top of the other which dip and diverge in different directions. Even though it may be possible to develop some solutions to the preceding problems on the basis of the geological and reservoir data on hand. it is readily recognized that substantiating data based on independent methods would he extremely valuable. It has been found through field studies that correiation of well gas composition can be used to advantage in the geological and engineering study of a complex reservoir identification problem. METHOD FOR COMPARISON AND CORRELATION OF WELL GAS SAMPLES Since a large number of well gas samples are required in a gas identification or reservoir con- tinuity problem, it is necessary that a method of analysis be employed which can detect differences in composition readily and inexpensively. Although detection would be possible by means of low temperature fractional distillation (POD) analpsis, the method requires a relatively large sample and is comparatively slow and expensive to run. The mass spectrometer affords an inexpensive and precise analysis of small well gas samples taken at the surface which are about 1/300 as large as a POD sample. These samples can be obtained by regular field personnei and shipped to the spectrometer for analysis. It is, therefore, a practical approach to the problem. A typical record from the mass spectrometer is illustrated in Fig. I. The peaks on the record represent the abundance of ions produced from the different hydrocarbon molecules making up the gas sam-ple. In well gas comparisons only five peaks are employed, since the other peaks are formed from the same gas molecules and furnish no additional information. The five peaks used represent the abundance of methane, propane, ethane, butane and heavier, and oxygen. They are referred to respectively as the 16, 29, 30, 43, and 32 peaks. THE atmosphere, which plays such an important part in the manufacture of iron and steel, is the most variable element involved in its several processes; and particularly is this true of the blast-furnace process, which consumes air in large quantities. At no time since the blast-furnace became an important and widely used apparatus-even when it was operated in the most crude manner-have the variations in composition of the raw materials used been as frequent and as great as the variations in humility of the atmosphere. Important, improvements have been made in the blast furnace and its accessories, such as the hot-blast stoves, the increase in size and change in the shape of the furnace, more efficient blowing engines, the increased protection given to the bosh walls, and the careful preparation of&apos; the raw material, all of which have exerted a pronounced influence on the furnace-operations from a metallurgical standpoint. But during the past eight years little advance has been made in this direction; the fuel-consumption has not diminished, nor has there been any material increase in production. Within that period, however, there has been witnessed the greatest development in appliances for the economical handling of material. So complete has been the work in this direction, that, except in isolated cases, in this country at least., a further extension does not hold out much promise of a satisfactory return on the investment required. It seemed that, with the exception of the gas-engine, we had about reached the limit, for like a strong wall, the atmosphere, with its humility as variable to-clay as when first blown into a primitive blast-furnace, appeared to stand as a Barrier to

Desulfurization of limestone during and subsequent to calcination has been investigated using U.S. Steel&apos;s Rogers City quarry-Michigan limestone cut to 25-30-mm diam spheroidal shapes. The experimental observations indicated that the sulfur present as iron pyrite in commercial limestone is oxidized partly to SO, during calcination and partly converted to sulfides (FeS, CaS) and CaSO4. If calcination is carried out under oxidizing conditions, most of the sulfur is converted to CaSO4, which can be removed from burnt lime readily in CO,-CO mixtures, the higher the CO content the faster is the rate of reaction. In the 30-mm-diam spheroids gas diffusion in the pores of limestone and burnt lime is fast relative to rates of the desulfurizing reactions. Over the temperature range investigated, e.g., 850° to 1200°C, there is internal desulfurization.

Greensand, greensand marl, and green earth are names given to sediments rich in the bluish green to greenish black mineral known as glauconite by the mineralogist. The word glauconite is from the Greek word glaukos, meaning bluish green. The term "greensand" as a rock name for a glauconite-bearing sediment is more appropriate than "greensand marl," a term that has been doggedly perpetuated in the literature. Because of its potash and phosphate content, greensand was dug and marketed as a fertilizer and soil conditioner for more than 100 years. The advent of prepared fertilizers with adjustable nutrient ratios led to the decline of green- sand for agricultural application. The material has since been recognized for use in water treatment. Unfortunately, in spite of large reserves and worldwide distribution, the mineral has not been utilized to any significant commercial extent because no major application has been found for a substance with its chemical composition and properties. This lack is probably due to a paucity of research on its potential commercial application. Extraction of potash received considerable attention during and just after World War I. Because of relatively high extraction costs and generally low potash content (up to 8%), glauconite lost its appeal as a source of this commodity. Historical Background Greensand was used as a fertilizer in New Jersey in the latter part of the 1700s. During the early 1800s its use became more common; applications of up to 100 tons per acre were sometimes made, although recommendations for agricultural use suggested 20 to 50 tons per acre (Tedrow, 1957). Many crops, especially the forage type, were said to improve with greensand application; however, because of slow release of potash, large quantities were required. Certain greensands that contain sulfur and sulfide minerals are harmful to plant growth, and these were classified as "poison," "burning," or "black marls." The availability of higher-grade potash salts from other mineral sources, and the manufacture of prepared fertilizers, displaced the agricultural use of green- sand during the later 1800s. During the mid-1800s the domestic greensand industry, centered in a small section of the eastern United States, grossed more than $500,000 per year. Toward the end of the century, annual production had dwindled to less than $100,000. By 1910 there were only six or eight greensand producers, grossing less than $5000 (Tyler, 1934). There was a small revival in the industry during World War I because of the curtailment of foreign potash, especially from Germany. During the later 1940s and early 1950s greensand was again recommended as a food nutrient for plants and farm crops. Agronomic studies discussed its potential as a soil additive that gradually releases potash and many trace- element nutrients essential for plant growth (Tedrow, 1957). Greensand was sold with the idea that it would condition soil and absorb and hold water while its base-exchange properties would release trace elements. For a short time glauconite was utilized in certain parts of New Jersey as a binding additive in the brick industry, and in the 1800s for making green glass (Cook, 1868). In the early 1900s the base-exchange property of glauconite was recognized for water treatment, and the mineral gained acceptance as a water softener. Zinc metal production in the operating plants in the United States during 1948 was approximately equal to that of the year 1947, although new developments during the year assure higher output in 1949, if economic conditions are favorable. In the Western plants, the man-power shortage was almost completely overcome and new capacity has been or is in the process of being added to three plants; thus by December of 1948 daily zinc metal production had risen to the highest point since May of 1944 despite strikes in one large primary smelter and in one secondary plant.

Attempts have been made to predict the volumetric and phase behavior of naturally occurring hydrocarbon mix-turesl-6 but these methods have not been extended to the higher pressures and tem-peratures that are currently encountered in some producing formations. Furthermore, the methods of prediction at present avail-able have not been tested in a sufficient number of cases to ensure their applica-bility to all naturally occurring hydrocar-bon mixtures, even at the lower pressures and temperatures. For these reasons the behavior of a number of hydrocarbon mix-tures from a field in which the subsurface pressures are above 4500 lb. per sq. in.t and the temperatures are in the neighbor-hood of 250°F. was investigated. Method The objective of this program was to determine the volumetric behavior of ma-terial as it existed in the reservoir as a function of pressure, temperature and com-position. Strictly speaking, this cannot be accomplished in any simple fashion. How- ever, the variations in composition that are encountered within a producing reservoir may be approximated roughly by means of mixtures made up of two arbitrarily chosen constituents. Experience indicates that the liquid and gas phases from a high-pressure gas trap afford a simple source of material for this purpose. Throughout this discus-sion the samples of the gas phase and liquid phase from the production trap will be called the "trap-gas sample" and the "trap-liquid sample," respectively. The volumetric behavior of both of the trap samples was determined throughout the temperature interval between 100" and 250°F. at pressures up to 5000 lb. per sq. in. In addition, the behavior of eight different mixtures containing varying proportions of the two trap samples was studied throughout the same temperature and pressure intervals. The experimental results yielded information concerning the specific volume of the material as a function of pressure, temperature and the relative quantity of the trap samples. The relative amount of each of the paraffin hydrocarbons of lower molecular weight than n-hexane was determined for each of the trap samples. In addition, the specific weight, viscosity and average molecular weight of the hexanes-and-heavier fraction of the trap-liquid sample were determined as well as similar information for each of five fractions separated from this material by distillation. From these data the weight fractions of each of the components from methane through pentane were determined for the trap samples and eight systematically chosen mixtures. WHAT proportion of the national wealth is represented by&apos; the producing mines of the country?&apos; Or by the- mining and metallurgical industry-as a whole, for it is impossible to make-an economic distinction between the mines that produce the ore and the plant that is used to get the metals from it. The total national wealth in fixed property is about $270,000,000,000. How much for the mines? I do not know that any one &apos;else has ever tried to furnish answers to these questions. In making such an attempt I am conscious that the result can be nothing more than a rough approximation. Yet even that will give an idea of relative values. No separate valuation for the mines of the country has appeared in any inventory of the national wealth previous to that which I compiled and published for 1916. -In earlier census estimates mines were supposed to be included under the head of real estate. However, an examination of the laws and practices of the several states with respect to mine taxation will make it evident that no good idea of the value of the mines of the coun¬try is obtainable from the assessment rolls. In my previous estimate for 1916, I computed the value of the mines at $8,000,000,000, which was approxi¬mately 10 times their net income as reported to the Bureau of Internal Revenue. In making that estimate I fell grossly into error, for several reasons that it is unnecessary to explain, but chiefly because the net income of the mines of the country in that year was exceptionally large. The whole subject of valuing the mines of the country en bloc is extraordinarily difficult At the best, no one can hope to arrive at, anything more than a rough idea about it. However, elements of reason may be introduced and may be made to serve as chief bases.
