A combined process of segregation roasting-flota-tion or magnetic separation was developed to recover nickel from lateritic iron ores and oxidized nickel ores. An ore was mixed with a halide, such as sodium or calcium chloride, and a solid reductant, and roasted, whereby the nickel content was segregated out as discrete metallic particles. Either by magnetic separation, or by flotation using a sulfhydryl collector together with a heavy metal salt as an activator, the metallic nickel could be concentrated, Effects of such variables as the types and amounts of the halide and solid reductant addition and of the roasting conditions were extensively investigated. The concentration results on several types of ores from Japan, the Philippines, and New Caledonia are presented. Laterite is a residual product of rock decay in tropical and subtropical regions, and consists mainly of hydrated oxides of iron and alumina. Those derived from serpentine sometimes become enriched in nickel, cobalt, and chromium contents. Oxidized nickel ores are of the similar origin, but their nickel as well as silica contents are higher due to gamierite-type silicates. Apparently, nickel enrichment is more pronounced in the transition region between the surface layer of iron laterite and the underlying serpentine. Iron laterites often contain over 50% iron, and their reserve is reported to exceed 22 billion tons, corresponding approximately to 20% of the world iron ore reserve.1 It is readily apparent, therefore, why the iron laterites have attracted much attention of the steel industry as a potential source of iron ores. Numerous attempts to remove nickel and chromium as byproducts, have been reported in literature.' Worldwide discoveries of high-grade iron ore deposits in recent years have inevitably lessened the interests in iron laterites. However, in view of the tremendous potential for their gross value and supplies of nickel, cobalt, chromium, and alumina along with iron, the problem remains as a challenge. Much of the chromium in laterites is present in the form of relatively coarse particles of chromite, and various classification methods have successfully been applied for its removal.2,3 The nickel, however, is intimately associated with limonite, and ordinary concentration techniques are totally ineffective. Much attention has, therefore, been given to hydro-metallurgical or pyrometallurgical means. Yet, all the known processes appear to have limitations either economically or for the use of products as iron raw materials due to a high residual content of nickel. Some attempts have been made to pre-roast laterites or oxidized nickel ores, particularly with sulfidizing agents, and to remove nickel either by magnetic separation,' or by flotation.4 It is apparent that any such concentration process would require grain growth of nickel during roasting for effective separation. Oxidized copper ores are reported to be concentrated by the segregation roasting-flotation process,5 in which the ores are roasted with a chloridizing agent and a carbonaceous reductant in order to promote the growth of metallic copper through repeated cycles of copper chloride volatilization and its reduction on the solid reductant surfaces. Examination of a vapor pressure-temperature diagram of various metal chlorides indicates that a separation of nickel from iron may be effected by a similar process. In fact, the segregation roasting of laterites was reported to increase the extraction of nickel by the ammonia leach process, as compared to the ordinary reduction roasting.6 In the present article some of the preliminary experimental results of the segregation roasting, followed by either flotation or magnetic separation, on laterites and oxidized nickel ores are reported. The effects of various parameters in the roasting as well as in the concentration steps are discussed. Both temperature and humidity are important variables in electrical separations. By independent control of temperature and water vapor pressure, it is shown that charge depends primarily upon relative humidity, not on temperature or water pressure alone. All the effects of temperature changes other than modification of humidity are apparently small. However, humidity control can be achieved through manipulation of the more tractable variable, temperature. Both temperature and humidity are important variables in electrical separations. Some of their effects have been described in general by Fraas1,2 and by Ralston.3 The influence of temperature and humidity may be considered a problem in industrial separations because humidity, especially, is not normally controlled, hence leads to unpredicted quality control problems. The problem is significant whether the separation is based on conductivity differences or on contact electrification. There is no doubt that water adsorbs from humid atmospheres onto mineral surfaces resulting in conductivity changes.'-8 An empirical relationship between conductivity and humidity is1.4-6,8 where a and b are constants peculiar to the substrate, and s and h are the conductivity and relative humidity respectively. Some authors have taken advantage of differences in a and b among minerals to make or propose electrodynamic separations in which h is the key control variable. Fraasl,2 reported that the charge developed on quartz and feldspar through contact with aluminum is sensitive to humidity, as illustrated schematically in Fig. 1. ALTHOUGH by far the largest A consumer of platinum metals in the world, the United States until recently has been in- significant as a producer. Writing in the "Minerals Yearbook" for 1939, H. W. Davis states that 1938 probably marked the beginning of an- other period of transition in the world production of the platinum metals. In that year, he says, their production in the United States jumped to 49,380 oz., or fourth in the rank of world output. In the ten-year period 1925 to 1934 United States output ,averaged only 8300 oz. Practically all of this sudden in- crease in production is attributable to the introduction of mechanized equipment at the placer deposits in the Goodnews Bay district of Alaska. This district adjoins the Bering Sea and Kuskokwim Bay (accented on the first syllable), and is approximately 120 miles south of the mouth of the Kuskokwim River. The nearest village and post office is Platinum, which lies about eleven miles north- east of the Goodnews Bay Mining Company's camp. A good gravel road connects the mine camp and the village.

THE use of minute boron additions to steel has been given considerable attention in recent years. Comparisons made between boron-free and boron-containing heats of otherwise identical analysis have indicated, beyond a doubt, the potent effect of boron for increasing hardenability. The actual hardenability increase has been expressed as a multiplying factor, or in terms of the percentage of other alloying elements boron might replace, The present study presents the results of a systematic survey of. the use of boron as an addition to two types of alloyed steels and as a replacement for various percentages of molybdenum in these steels, Both cast and wrought steels of the two basic compositions were prepared. Molybdenum, because of its scarcity at the time the investigation was started, was selected as the element to be replaced by boron. Attention was also given to the effects of boron on other properties of the steels, particularly their notched-bar toughness, to investigate other advantages or limitations of this element as an alloy addition. EXPERIMENTAL WORK Steels Investigated The two basic compositions used in this survey of boron as a replacement for molybdenum are given in Table I. The cast steels were higher than the wrought steels in silicon content to improve the casting quality. [ ] Each of these base steels, both cast and wrought, was made with molybdenum contents of o, 0.10, 0.20, 0.30, or 0.40 per cent, the total comprising 20 steels. In addition, each of these 20 compositions . was prepared with boron additions in amounts of 0.0015, 0.003, and o,006 per cent as ferroboron; and in amounts of 0.002 and 0.005 per cent as two com¬mercial intensifier alloys, designated alloys A and B. The boron-treated steels totaled 100, and the entire series 120, Test Procedure Each steel was melted as an individual heat in a 50-lb., magnesia-lined induction furnace. Ingot iron scrap or mixtures of ingot iron and steel scrap were used for melting stock. Deoxidation was carried out in the furnace with o.10 per cent aluminum. The aluminum addition was

It is with some trepidation that I approach my subject, for I know that I shall at once incur the suspicion of the mechanical engineer, with his concern for boiler tests and efficiencies; of the mining engineer, with his mechanization problems; and of the chemical engineer with his unit processes. Nevertheless, it must be recognized that the technology of fuels, the systematic body of knowledge relating to the production, processing and utilization of mineral fuels, has grown to such proportions and involves so many widely diverse applications of fundamental science and engineering that it behooves us to stop and consider just what its status is in relation to other technologies, as well as in relation to the present and future needs of the social order. The time has come when technologists, applied scientists and engineers must consider the possible effects that their achievements may have on Society. The development of a machine to - -replace -several hundred men is a fine achievement when considered solely from the point of view of creative endeavor. But what of the men who are displaced by the machine! Does not the responsibility for the development of this machine embrace as well the consequences of obsolescence and technological unemployment resulting from such development? I believe that it does and that we must recognize this fact in our practice of engineering and tech- nology as well as in the training of future engineers and technologists. Magnitude of the Fuels Industry Fuel technology is the body of knowledge that relates to the mineral fuels. The fuels industry is by far the most important of all Our mineral industries. The chart in Fig. I, reprinted from U. S. Bureau of Mines Information Circular No. 6643, indicates the compartive values of metals, fuels and other nonmetallic minerals for the year 1929. Of the grand total of 13¼ billions of dollars in value of minerals at the mines, the mineral fuels contributed 48 per cent. Coal, with 34.4 Per cent, exceeded the value of any other single mineral. In fact, the value of the production of the Pennsylvania anthracite mines alone anand exceeds the value of the gold production of the entire world. Petroleum and natural gas in 1929 contributed 14.3 per cent and 3.3 per cent, respectively, of the total value of world mineral production. So much for the world picture; let us now look at the situation in the United States. Over the 60-year period 1880 to '939, $46,409,727,000 of metal1ic products, $80,788,852,000 of fuels (coal, petroleum, natural gas, natural gasoline) and $27,871,-ooo,ooo of nonmetallic minerals other than fuels were produced. The mineral fuels have contributed 52.7 per cent of the entire mineral wealth produced over this period that has seen such tremendous industrial development in our Our As a matter of fact, our present industrial civilization has been made possible through the use of the

As shown in previous papers by the authorsg-17t the resistance of a metal to fracture, like its resistance to plastic deformation, is a function of all three principal stresses. A technical cohesion limit is the technically determined resistance to fracture under a specific stress system. The technical cohesive strength thus comprises an infinite number of technical cohesion limits corresponding to the infinite number Of possible com-binations of the principal stresses. The technical cohesive strength, therefore, may be represented by a surface in a diagram with the three principal stresses as coordinates. As shown in previous papers,'-'' the technical cohesive strength increases with plastic deformation, with decrease in temperature, and with increase in the strain rate. The technical cohesion limit, therefore, is affected by the same factors that affect the flow stress,$ namely, the stress system, plastic deformation, temperature, and the strain rate. More- over, the influence of each of these factors on the technical cohesion limit has been shown to be qualitatively similar to the three of the same factor on the flow stress.9-18 Advance of knowledge about the conditions determining fracture of metals has been retarded by the reluctance of some investigators to abandon preconceived ideas about how metals ''should,, behave. The incorrect idea is still prevalent that the conditions determining resistance to fracture are very different from those determining the flow stress. Attempts are still being made to express resistance to fracture in terms of a single parameter, such as a limiting value of the greatest principal stress, the maximum shearing stress, or the volume stress (one-third the algebraic sum of the three principal stresses). In these attempts, a sharp distinction is sometimes made between a ductile or ,plasticdeformation, fracture,, and a "brittle frat-ture.H In making this distinction, however, the meaning attached to the term "brittle fracture" sometimes is not made clear. The term could mean fracture after very little plastic deformation or it could be used to designate the type of fracture. An ordinary fracture of a ductile metal at room temperature starts as a cleavage, generally transverse to the direction of the greatest principal stress, but eventually changes to a shearing fracture' In some conditions, however, the metal fractures entirely by cleavage, with no evidence of plastic deformation during the fracture; the surface of such a fracture may have a

Some information has been published on the sulphur dioxide concentration of gases from D wight-Lloyd machines sintering lead ores but most of this relates to the customary practice in which the charge is relatively high in lead and is sintered in two passes Over the machine. It is thought, therefore, that the following observations on sintering in one pass a low-lead, low-sulphur charge may be of interest. The data were obtained in sintering lead sulphide notation concentrates mixed with minus 20.mesh oxide ore, the mixture carrying 16,8 per cent Pb and 5.3 per cent S. No returns were used because of the limited amount of sulphur available as fuel, but the mixture pelletized readily. to make a satisfactorily permeable bed on the sintering machine. As there was a possibility that the SO z might be utilized, a series of runs was made to determine the concentration ofSO2 in the gases at different points along the wind box, and the effect on this concentration of changes in the wind-box vacuum. Several runs each were made with vacuums (as measured in inches of water at the wind box) of (1 2 to 1 in., ('1 4 to 3% in. and (3) 6 to 5% in. The averages of the determinations from each series are platted On the graph (Fig, 1). The vertical scale shows the percentage by volume of SOz (as determined by the Reich method), and the horizontal scale shows the time e~pressed as percentage of the total sintering time. Sintering was considered to be complete when no SOz could be detected in the gases. In all cases the depth of bed was 4 1/2 in. and the weight of dry charge per square foot of hearth area was 45.2 lb. Other data are given in the table. The volume of gases corresponding to the several points along the wind box at which SO2 determinations were made could not be measured, but has been calculated from the SO2 Content and sulphur elimination on the assumption that the volume is uniform throughout the sintering period. This is not strictly true, as with a given vacuum the volume usually will drop slightly toward the middle of the period and increase toward the end. However, this made is a reasonable approximation. several interesting features are brought out by these data. In general, the published data on SO 2 concentration in sintering under ordinary conditions show a high SO2 concentration in the early stages followed by a rapid decrease in concentration and with relatively little SOz in the gases from the last half or third of the operation. In other words, the greater part of the sulphur elimination is obtained in the first third or half of the period. In these runs, the 6-in. vacuum, which approximates the usual operating condition, gives a curve that follows this customary pattern. Maximum SO2 concentration is obtained 234 min. after

The solubility of nitrogen gas in purified iron and low alloy steels is determined for the y region (930° to 1350°C). The diffusivtiy of nitrogen is estimated from the rate of approach to equilibrium. The investigation of aluminum-killed steels, held in nitrogen, discloses precipitation of aluminum nitride, the solubility of which is determined. ALTHOUGH several investigations of the solu-bility of nitrogen gas in y iron have been reported, all have made use of the method adopted by Sieverts in his classic work, whereby the solubility is determined by the pressure or volume change of the gas. The agreement between different investigators* is rather poor, particularly as compared to the self-consistency of results of several individual investigators. The present report represents a portion of our investigation of the equilibrium of nitrogen and nitrogenous atmospheres with iron and steels. The method adopted in this temperature region (910" to 1400°C) consists of holding the specimen in gaseous nitrogen, quenching (or cooling), and determining the nitrogen content by direct analysis (solution in acid followed by distillation and titra-tion of the ammonia).** Up to 1050°C a 20 in. vertical wire-wound (Kan-thal) furnace was used; this was wound in three sections so that by proper adjustment of relative currents, and use of a modulator1 and a commercial controller (using a chromel-alumel control couple), a zone almost 6 in. long could be maintained uniform within a few tenths of a degree. Since the temperature coefficient of the nitrogen solubility is low, the full precision was not utilized and a variation of l° to 2" was tolerated; a variation of a similar amount also occurred occasionally between the beginning and end of the experiment. At higher temperature a vertically mounted, tubular Globar furnace and control unit was used; the zone of uniformity (l° to 2"C) was here limited to about 2 in.; fluctuations with time were comparable to those in the wire-wound furnace. Reported temperatures were measured by use of a platinum-platinum-rhodium thermocouple, which was frequently com- pared with a similar standard couple which was calibrated at the gold and palladium points and also compared with one certified by the Bureau of Standards; error from this source is believed to be less than 1 "C. Nitrogen gas from a commercial cylinder was mixed with slightly over 1 pct H by use of a gas mixer described previously.' This mixture was passed over hot copper and through ascarite and phosphorus pentoxide to remove oxygen and water vapor. The purified gas contained 1.05 pct H. This procedure was adopted to prevent the formation on the specimens of oxide film, which is well known to be nearly impervious to nitrogen; its success was attested by

A detailed treatment is given of the transient pressure behavior of a well located near a linear discontinuity. On either side of the discontinuity, the values of permeability, viscosity, compressibility, and porosity are uniform, but may be different from those on the other side of the discontinuity. These results generalize previously published works which assumed the permeability ratio for media on different sides of the discontinuity was zero, one, or infinity. One application of this material would be to facilitate detection of facies changes or fluid-fluid contacts by transient testing. Solutions, presented graphically, show pressure decline for constant rate fluid production. The range of variables examined includes dimensionless time from 0.1 to 100, rnohility ratio from 0.001 to 1000 and specific compressibility ratio from 0.001 to 1000. For dimensionless tinze less than 0.4, the pressure behavior is essentially that of a well in an infinite reservoir. Thus, reservoir properties near the well may be estimated in the usual manner. Using an overlay technique to match an experimental curve with one of the theoretical curves, it is possible to estimate the distance to a discontinuity by substituting the actual time t and the corresponding dimensionless time , at which a match occurs into the equation where is the diffusivity near the well, and may be estimated from data taken at early time. Because of both the complexity of the solutions and limited computer facilities, well interference problems were not examined extensively. However, it was found that well interference may be masked by the discontinuity in some cases. By superposition of the results of constant rate fluid production, the problenz of pressure buildup may be treated. Such results show that for early shut-in times correct values for the transnzissibility are obtained from conventional semilog plotting. However, erroneous values of the static reservoir pressure are obtained unless data at large shut-in times are taken. INTRODUCTION Transient well testing has yielded estimates of such reservoir parameters as static reservoir pressure, permeability. porosity, and well bore effects. In most tests, it was assumed that the reservoirs were homogeneous and iso-tropic. Anisotropic media' and radial discontinuities were considered.'.' Various studies have been made on multiple-layer reservoirs." ' Linear discontinuities have been described for problems of one-dimensional flow.' In the present paper, a mathematical treatment is given for a well located near a linear discontinuity in an otherwise infinite medium (see Fig. 1). An actual reservoir analogy would be a well in a relatively thin reservoir near a fluid-fluid contact, or a well located in a reservoir exhibiting a sudden change in rock and formation characteristics, such as thickness, porosity, or permeability. A sudden change in porosity or permeability may be caused by clay fill or other types of facies changes. Sudden thickness changes niay be the result of such geological formations as buried shore lines and channel deposits. In otherwise uniform formations, a linear discontinuity may be caused by fluid-fluid interfaces such as oil-water contacts. 3s-oil contacts, or gas-water contacts.

In conventional dump leaching of strip wastes from open-pit porphyry mining operations, many years are required to extract a fraction of the copper from the contained sulfide minerals. Furthermore, none of the molybdenum, gold, or silver is recovered by current leaching practices. Because the copper sulfide minerals and molybdenite generally are distributed in the minute fractures throughout the host rock, the mineral values tend to concentrate in the finer fraction of the strip material. This suggests the possibility of segregating the enriched fines in as-produced or coarsely crushed strip wastes for blending with the ore grade flotation mill feed. In the past, extra handling or crushing of mine wastes to enable better leach extraction has been deemed uneconomical. However, recent articles on mobile crushing plants and conveyor haulage systems indicate possible cost improvements for these techniques over conventional truck haulage of ore and mine wastes. Another potential benefit from removal of the fines from copper-bearing mine waste derives from the increased permeability of the coarse dump material to leach solutions and air. Better permeability should result in faster oxidation of the sulfide minerals, less channeling of leach solutions, and fewer perched solution tables caused by compacted fines. Therefore, in addition to the metal values recovered by flotation, higher copper recoveries by leaching also might be achieved. The Salt Lake City Metallurgy Research Center of the U.S. Bureau of Mines undertook an investigation to determine the feasibility of removing enriched fines from strip waste material for separate treatment by froth flotation for early recovery of part of the copper, molybdenum, gold, and silver. Percolation leaching tests were made on mine-run and sized fractions of the dump material to determine the effect of fines removal on copper extraction. Samples Tested Three 10-ton samples of copper sulfide-bearing mine waste were obtained for the investigation. Partial chemical analyses of the samples are given in [Table 1] and the consolidated results of detailed screen analyses made on the samples are given in [Table 2]. The -1/4-in, fine fractions contain from 16 to 32% of the copper and 19 to 40% of the molybdenum in 11 to 18% of the total waste. The samples also were crushed to -3 in. to determine the feasibility of crushing to obtain a higher distribution of the metal values in an enriched fine fraction while providing a more leachable coarse fraction that could be transported by a conveyor system to a dump. The -%-in. fine fractions screened from the crushed mine waste were almost identical in grade to the natural fines. From 2 to 4% more1/4-in. fines were produced by crushing to -3 in. Copper distribution was increased by about 3% over that in the natural fines, while molybdenum distribution was increased by about 10%. Extrusion of aluminum alloys in this country is performed mainly by direct extrusion, therefore this paper is confined only to factors affecting the rate of extrusion by this method. Many factors affect the rate of extrusion of aluminum alloys. It is the purpose of this paper to present a discussion on the factors that are subject to technical control. Most of them are closely related, so that a clear-cut distinction between them is rather difficult. However, an attempt will be made to evaluate the effect of each factor separately, as far as possible. The most important factors only will be considered, and these will be discussed in detail under three general headings: (I) characteristics of the equipment, (2) size and structure of the ingot, and (3) temperature of ingot, cylinder, and other parts. It is a well established fact1 that the pressure and the speed of extrusion are related and are exponential functions of one another. Therefore, whenever a certain condition tends, for instance, to increase the pressure required for extrusion, it will reduce the extrusion speed if the pressure is maintained constant. For this reason, in this paper the effect of various conditions is expressed either in regard to their effect on the pressure required or the extrusion speed. Another established fact is the relation- ship between the temperature of the material being extruded and the pressure required to extrude. According to Schi-shokin,= this relationship is of the exponential type, and as the temperature is increased the pressure required is decreased. It would seem from the preceding that the greatest rates of extrusion can be obtained by the use of higher temperatures. However, as is well known, other factors intervene to limit the rate of extrusion of aluminum alloys when increasing the temperature. These factors will be discussed in detail later. Characteristics of the Equipment The capacity of the press determines * the maximum unitary pressure that can be applied for any given cylinder diameter. Pressures used for extrusion of aluminum alloys range from approximately 50,000 lb. per sq. in. to 150,000 lb. per sq. in., dependent upon the alloy and the size of the shape extruded. Higher pressures could be used to advantage, but existing steels limit pressures employed in the production of extrusions. Numerous mechanical characteristics of the extrusion press affect extrusion rate. The most important characteristics of the press itself are: (I) sensitivity of the main pressure valve and accuracy of pressure gauges, (2) accuracy of equipment to heat the cylinder uniformly and to control cylinder temperature, and (3) accuracy of means of measuring the speed of extrusion. Reverse combustion is one thermal method of recovering hydrocarbons from porous undergrortnd formations containing oil or tar. In applying this method, air is introduced via an injection well and the mixture of air and hydrocarbons is ignited in the production well. A combustion zone then recedes toward the injection well, counter-current to the air flow. If the combustion-zorie temperature is sufficiently high, the oil or tar irz place is distilled arid cracked. The hydrocnrhon flows as a vapor to the production well and subsequently is condensed at the surface. Maximum temperature and velocity of morcment arc the two dependent variubles defining the progress of the combustion zone. A theoretical analysis has been made of heat flow in the reverse-comhustion process as.srtrning linear flow in a homogeneous system. The differentirll equatious, which include the oxygen-hydrocar-hon rctrction rate, have been solved numerically. Rescllts indicate that the maximum temperature reached and he cornbustion-zone relocity both increase with an incrense in air-injection rote. Heat loss to surroundings has little effect on the maximum comhustion-zone ten?perature achieved, but it is reflected in a reduced com-bustion-zorzc, velocity. It is also predicted that an increase in the oxygen-hydrocarbon reaction rate results in a reduction in the maximum temperature reached. The calculated results are in agreement with results from reverse-combustion experinments using samples of a tar sand. INTRODUCTION Reverse combustion is one thermal method of recovering hydrocarbons from porous underground forma-tions containing oil or tar.' In applying this method, air is introduced into the underground formation via an in-jection well. In one or more adjacent production wells, the mixture of air and hydrocarbons is ignited at the sand face. The combustion zone thus formed recedes toward the injection well, counter-current to the air flow (Fig. 1). Under certain conditions, the rate of recession of the combustion zone is sufficiently rapid that only a small fraction of the hydrocarbon at any point in the formation is consumed by combustion. If the combustion-zone temperature is sufficiently high, the uncon-sumed oil or tar in place may be partially distilled or cracked. This material then can flow as a vapor with the gaseous combustion products to the production well and subsequently be condensed at the surface. Under other conditions, the combustion-zone temperature may be so low that little, if any, of the hydrocarbon is vaporized. Nevertheless, the viscosity of the hydrocarbon may be reduced enough so that other recovery methods subsequently can be applied to produce oil at attractive rates. The maximum temperature achieved in the combustion zone and the velocity of movement are the two dependent variables defining the progress of the combustion zone. Presumably. knowledge of these factors will permit estimates to be made of oil recovery efficiency, oil and gas producticn rates and average amount of injection air required per barrel of oil recovered. The maximum temperature and combustion-zone vclocity are, in turn, expected to be dependent upon air flow rate, heat losses to surrounding formations, physical properties of the rock and the hydrocarbon. the extent to which the porous formation is saturated with the hydrocarbon, the rate of oxidation of the hydrocarbon and the amount of heat released. It is desirable that the relative importance of each of these factors be understood so that the results of laboratory tests of oil recovery by reverse combustion can be properly interpreted in terms of expected field performance. NUMEROUS publications have examined hot hardness of metals and alloys. Some have studied creep in long-time hardness tests, few of which, however, were tested under a spherical indentor. 1-3 The results of Mulhearn and Tabor' indicate a parabolic-type creep for indium and lead, whereas Moore and Tabor2 how a logarithmic-type creep for indium. Similar semilog relationships between hardness and time have been found by Goffard and wheeler3 for magnesium, aluminum, and their alloys. In this note, the elevated-temperature hardness of some complex alloys, shown in Table I, was examined to discover whether any basic information about the deformation behavior of the alloys could be obtained. One of the alloys, H-13 alloy steel, was tested for short-time creep tests to examine the hardness-time relationship at various temperatures. A standard Brinell Hardness Tester, mounted with an appropriate furnace and 99 pct A12O3 poly-crystalline indentor, was employed for the purpose. The alloys were tested at temperatures from room to 1400°F for 30 sec under 1500-kg load. The creep studies were conducted for about 8500 sec at 7l°, 500°, 1000°, and 1200°F. For constants A and B, a relationship of the type H = Aexp(-BT) [ll was obtained for all alloys between hardness, H, and temperature, T. In the semilogarithmic plot, the data points for each alloy were arranged into two groups, each group on a straight line with a specific set of A and B values. These results are in agreement with many such observations on hot hardness, notably those of Westbrook for pure metals,4 The thermal softening coefficient, B, and transition temperature, Tt, for various alloys are shown in Table I. The change in slope around the transition temperature suggests an apparent change in the mechanism of deformation, probably from the shear (below Tt) to the diffusion type of mechanism. At the temperatures above Tt, for constants A' and B, a relationship of the type was obtained between H and T, Fig. 1. The nature of the equation, where R is gas constant, suggests the possibility of a thermally activated mechanism of deformation above Tt. The constant B' may hence be defined as the apparent activation energy of indentation. The B' values of various alloys are shown in Table I. A plot of B vs B' gives a curvilinear relation shown in Fig. 2. The indentation-creep data for H-13 alloy steel is shown in Fig. 3. At 71" and 500°F, the creep initially follows the logarithmic time law. However, the indentation size stabilizes after 7 sec at 71°F, and after 10 sec at 500°F. Further increase in loading time has no effect on indentation size. The creep of 1000° and 1200°F follows the logarithmic time law for the first 1000 sec, after which the

President Allende says he will expropriate all American investments in Chile and he's already well on the way to accomplishing this objective. What the average observer doesn't realize is that this has not only created big lossess for the copper companies. It could also take a chunk out of the U.S. taxpayers' pockets. Premier Castro expropriated the U.S. taxpayers' investment of over $100 million in the Nicaro (Cuba) nickel and cobalt operations-and U.S. Government protest over the loss was never heard above a whisper. Where the taxpayer comes in today is through the Overseas Private Investment Corporation, which was set up to guarantee U.S. companies' foreign investments against losses due to political changes. As of now, metals firms hold more than $300 million worth of obligations against this U.S. Government agency. The agency itself may not be able to raise more than $85 million, and a supplemental appropriation may be needed to meet its guarantees.

AMONG naturally occurring inorganic compounds, magnetite has many unusual and interesting properties, and it is the purpose of this paper to call attention to these properties and review possible uses of magnetite that might be based on them; in other words, to see what uses may be found for magnetite as a physical rather than as a chemical entity, as a mineral rather than as an iron ore. The Mineral Physics Studies initiated in the Metallurgical Division of the U. S. Bureau of Mines a few years ago gathered together much information on mineral properties, and they are therefore the principal source of material for this paper. Magnetic Properties Of Magnetite And Possible Uses As A Magnetic Material Magnetite is unique among minerals for its great magnetic susceptibility, approximately one-third that of soft iron, and some magnetites are permanent magnets, or lodestones. The literature contains many measurements of magnetic properties of individual magnetite crystals, but no systematic survey of the effect of mechanical preparation and heat-treatment was available until the recent investigations of the Bureau of which included not only susceptibility but coercive force and remanence as well. For the purpose of orientation, Table 1 gives the magnetic properties of several samples of magnetite and of a few other substances3. This table indicates that when ordinary magnetite is powdered it decreases in susceptibility and increases in coercive force and remanence, approaching the properties of lodestone. The properties of lodestone are in fact probably due to the development of very large internal surface on fine grain size4.
