In the Coast Mountains approximately 110 miles north of Vancouver, the gold mine of Bralorne- Pioneer Mines Ltd. lies at an elevation of 3500 ft. The deepest or 41 level in the mine is at an elevation of 1400 ft below sea level, and the rock temperature on this level is 122.5°F. The thermal gradient is 1 "F increase in temperature for each 67.5 ft increase in depth. The mine produces between 500 and 600 tons per clay, utilizing an adit two internal shafts, and one service shaft from surface. The Queen shaft, extending from the 26 to the 41 level, IS the deepest, and most production now comes from this area. Stoping in by cut and fill using mill tailing hydraulic backfill.

THE name fuller's earth, which was derived from its early use in "fulling" or removing grease from woolen goods, is a term that is generally considered to designate mineral matter, containing hydrous aluminum silicates of the clay group, which has a high capacity for removing colors from oils, whether of animal, vegetable, or mineral origin. Fuller's earths are usually dried and may be "tempered" by heating or may be treated with water or reagents to improve their efficiency. For our purpose the term "acid-treated earths" will include those products from the partial decomposition of mineral water by acid which are equal to or more efficient than an untreated fuller's earth from Quincy, Fla., when used in bleaching mineral oil by the "contact" process. In general, the contact process for treating oils consists of heating and agitating a mixture of oil and finely divided adsorbent, the latter being subsequently removed by filtration. The term "adsorbent" is used because, although there has been a great deal of controversy over the mechanism of removal of impurities from oils by mineral matter, there is no doubt that adsorption, which involves the surface of the solid, plays a major part.1 The properties that make fuller's earth useful in the treatment of petroleum products by "percolation" and in the purification of edible oils by the contact process have long been studied, but the comparatively recent adaptation of the contact process to the bleaching of petroleum products has made desirable the further investigation of fuller's earth and other adsorbent earths.

THREE mills are now operated by the Consolidated Mining & Smelting Co. of Canada, Ltd:: (1) The Sullivan concentrator, Chapman, B. C. (near Kimberley, B. C.), (2) the St. Eugene concentrator, Moyie, B. C., and (3) the Tadanac (customs) concen-trator, Trail, B. C. Differential flotation is the only concentration method employed in all three plants. Tables are used for pilot work only. Flotation equip-ment and control are similar in the three mills, and the flow sheets at the St. Eugene and Tadanac mills, while much simpler, are modeled after that of the Sul-livan concentrator. Successful differential flotation of Sullivan ore com-menced in the spring of 1920, in the pilot concentrator at Trail. During 1920, 193,804 tons were treated by this process. This operation continued without interrup-tion and with steady growth. For the first 7 months of . 1923, which concluded the pilot plant operation, ap-proximately 1100 tons were treated daily. I believe the Sunnyside plant of the United States Smelting &. Refining Co. was the only successful and large scale operation practising differential flotation prior to 1920. in North America. The Sullivan ore, because of its high iron content, was quite a different problem from that at Sunnyside. The entire tonnage of Sullivan ore had to be separated into three sulfide concentrate products-lead concentrate, zinc concentrate and iron concentrate. The choice and arrangement of equipment, and the original flow sheet for the Sullivan concentrator were controlled by the results of the exhaustive pilot mill test. These covered a continuous period of 3 1/2 years and involved the treatment of 1,076,368 tons of Sullivan ore. Satisfactory recoveries are made from feed; 11.0 per cent lead and 7.5 per cent zinc in the form of lead concentrate containing 69 per cent lead, 4.5 per cent zinc, and zinc concentrate containing 3.0 per cent lead and 49 per cent zinc. (The pure zinc mineral in Sulli-van ore is marmatite, 'containing approximately 54.5 per cent zinc and 10 per cent iron. It is apparent, there-fore, that 49 percent concentrate is high grade for this particular ore.)

Operations ill Colorado oil fields in 1934 were not quite so extensive as in 1933, but much better results were obtained and one new oil field was discovered. In all, 26 wells were drilled, of which 9 were oil wells, 1 was a gas well, and 16 were dry holes. New oil production totaled 10,220 bbl. and new gas production totaled 33,714,000 cu. ft. This compares with new oil production in 1933 of 1238 bbl. and new gas production of 14,307,000 cu. ft. Dry holes in 1933 totaled 29 as conlpared with 16 in 1934. Oil was discovered in the Hiawatha gas field, Moffat County, in 1934 in the Mountain Fuel Supply Company's No. 4B Wilson, C. NE. NW. of sec. 23, 12N., 100W. This well was completed in a sand in the Wasatch (Tertiary) at 2304 to 2337 ft., after plugging back from 3797 ft. It made 20 bbl. of oil initially. No. 4B Wilson is the first well in the Rocky Mountain region to discover oil in commercial amounts in rocks younger than Cretaceous, and while it is not expected that Hiawatha will develop into an oil field of important proportions, eventually it may produce a considerable amount of oil as the gas pressure declines. The New York talc deposits of commercial importance are in St. Lawrence and Lewis counties, in the northwest Adirondack Mountains (Fig 1). All of the deposits are of pre-Cambrian age and occur within highly deformed and recrystallized marble of the Grenville series. The deposits in St. Lawrence County, near Gouverneur, are the largest and most productive of their type known in the Western Hemisphere. In 1948 the seven mines which are in operation will produce about 130,000 tons of ground talc. All talc production in Lewis County is from one mine. There the annual production ranges from 15,000 to 30,000 tons. These so called talcs of New York State include earth materials of differ- ent chemical and mineral compositions. In general the mineral talc is sub- ordinate in amount to other minerals in both the Gouverneur and Natural Bridge deposits.

The Powder River Basin of northeast Wyoming was the first area in the state to receive attention during the early days of uranium exploration. Although the uranium occurrences are many and widespread, most of the known ore deposits are quite small and difficult to mine. As a result of this, detailed regional exploration in the Powder River Basin has been neglected. The uranium ore deposits occur in that part of the Wasatch Formation that is of earliest Eocene age, and they are scattered over an area of about 400 square miles. All uranium ore deposits are associated with red beds or altered sandstones within the Wasatch Formation. Uranium ore was first shipped from the region in 1953. Total production through June of 1965 is 506,257 tons of uranium ore containing 1,922,527 pounds of U3O8. The average grade of ore is about 0.19 per cent U3O8. The major producing area of the Powder River Basin is the Monument Hill district where about 91 per cent of the basin's total uranium ore has been mined. The source of uranium is presumed to have been the Oligocene, Miocene, and perhaps Pliocene tuffaceous rocks that once overlay the area. Joints, fractures, and permeable beds or zones were the passageways for the migration of uraniferous waters from the overlying beds to the Eocene host rocks.

AFTER nine years of extremely de- pressed business, marked mostly A with red ink on the balance sheets of most coal companies and with an increasing internal competitive struggle for diminishing markets, somewhat of a change appeared during 1939. Shipments increased and prices generally firmed, giving the coal industry increasing optimism and encouragement for the future. Specifically, it now appears that bituminous coal production for 1939 will approximate 378,000,000 tons, and anthracite production will approximate 47,500,000 tons, bituminous production being around 14 per cent ahead of 1938 and anthracite production 12 per cent better. The curve on p. 31, showing both bituminous and anthracite production, furnished by the bituminous coal division of the Department of the Interior, shows graphically most of the 1939 monthly production and clearly illustrates the increased production.

Greater progress than in any previous year was accomplished by the oil industry in New Mexico in 1936. The total number of completions in the state was 631, of which 549 were oil wells, 21 were hydrocarbon gas wells, three were carbon dioxide gas wells, and 58 were dry holes. The total oil production for the year was 26,804,446 bbl. Compared with the production for 1935 of 20,228,947 bbl., this represented a gain of 32.5 per cent. Of the total production, 25,337,382 bbl. came from Lea County. The average daily nonmarginal well allowable for that county was 115 bbl. the first of the year and 86 bbl. at the close. QUALITY and size do not ordinarily go hand in hand, but there is good evidence that both these attributes reached a new peak at the Annual Meeting of the Institute in New York just concluded. Certainly, the total attendance of 2500 was far above any yet attained, as might be expected with the recent rapid growth of Institute member- ship. General comment indicates that the quality of the papers also was notable, though not measurable by so definite a yardstick as attendance. During the meeting 49 technical sessions were held, at which more than 250 formal papers were presented. In addition, there were some thirty special meetings of committees, Divisions, and other Institute groups. In reporting the Annual Meeting eleven years ago the statement was made that "unless the Engineering Societies should build for themselves a new building it is probable that no meeting can be larger," and "the fifth floor, where a buffet lunch is served each day, has reached its full capacity and it seems quite evident that any future development of Institute meetings must be along the lines of quality, not size." Unfortunately the angel to succeed Andrew Carnegie, who financed the building of the present home of the Institute 35 years ago, has not yet ' appeared. Introduction. OF the treatment of the slime-pulp of gold- and silver-ores by cyanidation, agitation is an essential part. When prepared for treatment, this pulp, consisting of ore reduced to such fineness that approximately 80 per cent. of it will pass through a 200-mesh screen, is mixed with a certain proportion of water, carrying in solution the quantity of cyanide (KCN) and other chemicals required. The water-constituent of the pulp thus prepared usually ranges from 1 to 2 parts by weight to 1 of the dry ore. Thus constituted', the pulp is charged into treatment-tanks, the shape and capacity of which vary, according to the quantity of pulp to be treated daily and the method of agitation to be employed. Tanks have no other function in a cyanide-plant than that of being economical and convenient containers or receptacles for holding the pulp, solution, or water used in the operations. It is by agitation that the solids in the pulp charged into the tanks are kept in suspension in, and mixed with, the solution in the proper proportions required for the treatment. If the proper mixture of solution to solids be determined to be 2 to 1 by weight (which is, approximately, 5 to 1 by volume), this proportion should be maintained in every part of the charge ; -that is, each solid particle of the pulp, whether it be of 180- or 400-mesh size, should, be surrounded by five times its own volume of solution throughout the whole period of treatment. The reason is, that the amount of chemicals ascertained to be necessary for dissolving the gold and silver contained in the solids, is held in uniform solution in the water-constituent of the pulp, and, therefore, the determined proportions of solution and solids must be maintained at all times during treat-

This chapter presents, in summarized form, standard procedures for making separations of minerals from their ores by the froth flotation process to produce marketable concentrates. These are typical mineral separations which are being made commercially with the reagents and conditions generally used in the mining industry. Typical separations are presented for 17 metallic and 11 nonmetallic ores. The review of each includes a brief description of the mineral and the particular problem presented, general market specifications for its concentrates, an outline of treatment method, and kinds and quantities of reagents usually employed. This chapter does not include de- tails about ore preparation (crushing, grinding, and classification), elements of ore and pulp transportation (conveying and pumping), or concentrate preparation for market (thickening, filtering, and drying). In each presentation it is assumed, if not detailed further, that the ore is ground to the economical point of liberation of the minerals to be separated. Specific information, such as ratio of concentration and recovery, that depends upon the grade of ore being treated is considered beyond the scope of this chapter. Effective flotation separations that produce marketable concentrates may produce widely varying results in terms of percent recovery and still be economically profitable operations. Details of plant practice on specific ores are presented in Chapters 16 and 17. In this chapter the chemical names of the reagents are given. The extent to which different reagents are used in flotation plants in the U. S. is presented in Chapter 4. A compilation of the various flotation reagents, their trade names, manufacturers, and use has been prepared by H. T. Spedden. ANTIMONY The principal ore mineral of antimony, stibnite (Sb2 S3), is generally found in the U. S. in ore bodies in association with other valuable minerals such as galena (Pbs), sphalerite (ZnS), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), or tetrahedrite (3Cu2 S – Sb2 S3), The sulfo-salt minerals of antimony, such as tetrahedrite or pyrargyrite, are often associated with high silver values, so that the presence of antimony may indicate economic importance even though the actual antimony content is low. I. DESCRIPTION. MONAZITE is one of the minerals which, for a long time, was considered rather rare in its occurrence, but, upon a commercial demand arising for it, prospectors and engineers soon located large deposits of it in the Carolinas and Brazil, and the supply has always been able to meet the demand. During 1908 further sources of supply of monazite have been discovered and developed in Idaho. North and South Carolina, however, are the only States that have thus far put any monazite on the market. Monazite is essentially an anhydrous phosphate of the rare-earth metals, cerium, lanthanum, and didymium (Ce, La, Di)PO;. There is nearly always present a varying but small percentage of thoria, ThO2, and silicic acid, SiO, which are very probably united in the form of a thorium silicate, ThSiO4 Some monazites contain but a fraction of a per cent. of thoria, while others have been recorded that showed the presence of from 18 to 32 per cent. ; but the majority contain from 3 to 9 per cent. of this oxide. It is the presence of the thorium oxide that gives the monazite its commercial value. The analysis occasionally shows also the presence of other constituents, as the yttrium and erbium oxides, zirconia, alumina, magnesia, lime, iron oxides, manganese oxide, and titanium oxide. Monazite is light-yellow, honey-yellow, reddish-, brownish-, or greenish-yellow in color, with a resinous to vitreous luster, and is translucent to subtransparent. It is brittle, with a conchoidal to uneven fracture, and is from 5 to 5.5 in hardness, and from 4.64 to 5.3 in specific gravity. It crystallizes in the monoclinic system, and some crystals have been observed that were 6 in. in length. The more perfect crystals are, however,

DURING the past twelve years the iron and steel industry has made a major advance through the development of the continuous wide strip rolling mill. So far-reaching have been the results that not only has a better product been sold at a lower price but this improvement in quality has permitted manufacturers of products using steel to make important savings in the cost of fabrication. The net result has been a better product at lower cost to the consumer without reduction in either employment or of wages paid within the industry. That is why the iron and steel industry is proud of its attainment. Being a basic industry of strategic importance, such an advance in technology has had its effects on our internal economy, our standard of living, and our industrial power as a nation in both peace and wartime.

A technique was developed- for determining the grain strain, and hence the grain boundary sliding contribution, occurring during the high- temperature creep of a magnesium alloy, from the distortion of a grid photographically printed on the specimen surface. The results were compared with those obtained from measurements of grain shape, both at the surface and interrwlly, and it was concluded that the grain shape technique may substantially underestimate the grain strain and overestimate the sliding contribution due to the tendency for migration to spheroidize the grains. ALTHOUGH a considerable volume of work has been published on the role of grain boundary sliding in high-temperature creep, many of the estimates of Egb (the contribution of grain boundary sliding to the total strain) have been in error due to the use of incorrect formulas or inadequate averaging procedures.' One of the most easy and convenient measurements from which to compute Egb is that of v, the step normal to the surface where a grain boundary is incident. Unfortunately, this parameter is also the one associated with the treatest number of pitfalls. Values of v have been used to calculate Egb from the equation: egb =knrVr [1] where k is a geometrical averaging factor, n is the number of grains per unit length before deformation, v is the average value of v, and the subscript ,r denotes the procedure of averaging along a number of randomly directed lines. If the dependence of sliding on stress were assumed, it would be possible, in principle, to calculate k from the known distribution of angles between boundaries and the surface. This in itself is difficult because the distribution depends on the history of the surface,' but the problem is even further complicated by the fact that v depends on other factors such as the unbalanced pressure from subsurface grains.3 However, the great simplicity of the measurement procedure for v makes it highly desirable that this problem of k determination should be overcome. In the present experiments, this was achieved by the use of an indirect empirical method in which the grain strain, eg, at the surface was determined by the use of a photographically printed grid. The assumption here is that the total strain, et, is simply the sum of that due to grain boundary sliding, egb, and that due to slip or other processes within the grains, eg. SO that: Et = Eg + Egb [2] Thus k is given by: In practice, it is customary to indicate the importance of sliding by expressing it as a percentage of the total creep strain; this quantity is termed y (= 100Egb/Et). The determination of Eg from a printed grid within the grains avoids the difficulties due to boundary migration which should be considered when the grain strain is calculated from measurements of the average grain shape before and after deformation. As first pointed out by Rachinger,4,5 however, this latter technique has the particular advantage that it can also be applied in the interior of a polycrystal. Recently, several workers have produced evidence on a variety of materials6-'' to support the observation, first made by Rachinger on aluminum,4,5 that 7 can be very high, 70 to 100 pct, in the interior, even when the surface value, determined from boundary offsets, is very much lower.10'11 Although there have been criticisms both of the shortcomings of the grain shape technique'' and of the different procedures used to determine y at the surface,' it seemed important to check whether measurements of sliding by grain shape gave values of y which were truly representative of the material. In the present experiments, grain shape measurements were therefore made both at the surface and in the interior for comparison with one another and with the independent measurements of grain strain using the surface grid technique. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES The material used in this investigation was Magnox AL80, a Mg-0.78 wt pct A1 alloy supplied by Magnesium Elektron Ltd., Manchester. Tensile specimens, about 7 cm in length, were prepared from a 1.27-cm-diam rod, with two parallel longitudinal flat faces each approximately 3 cm in length. The specimens were annealed for 2 hr in an oxygen-free capsule, at temperatures in the range 430° to 540°C, to give varying grain sizes, and, prior to testing, the grain size of each was carefully determined using the linear intercept method. This revealed that the grains were elongated -0.5 to 5 pct in the longitudinal direction. Testing was carried out in Dennison Model T47E machines under constant load at temperatures in the range 150" to 300°C. At temperatures of 200°C and below, tests were conducted in air with the polished flat faces coated with a thin film of silicone oil to prevent oxidation; at higher temperatures, an argon atmosphere was used. To determine v,, each test was interrupted at regular increments of strain and the specimen removed from the machine. QUANTITATIVE applications of the electron micro-beam probe frequently involve the evaluation of complex mathematical expressions and/or the analysis of large amounts of experimental data. The purpose of this communication is to describe briefly a versatile and useful computer program system that is applicable to analyze rapidly a wide variety of practical microprobe problems. This system consists of a group of ten FORTRAN programs that can be stored on tape, cards, or in the memory disc of the computer. These programs, or links, can be run individually or in any prespecified sequence without interrupting the operation of the computer or without destroying information which is being transfered from one link to another. For the program system described here a GE-235 computer with disc storage was used, so that the DCHAIN method of program linking was employed. Included in the library are programs to: 1) initiate analysis of a new set of data and transfer control between all other programs in any predetermined manner; 2) generate theoretical calibration curves of composition vs relative intensity; 3) generate empirical deviation parameters from least-square fits of experimental calibration data from standards of known composition; 4) convert raw X-ray data to corrected composition; 5) determine inter diffusion coefficients by Matano analysis of con centrat ion -distance data on a uniaxial diffusion couple; 6) determine activation energies and frequency factors of temperature-activated processes such as diffusion; and 7) generate calibration curves for determination of the thickness of thin films using microanalysis. A detailed description of these computer programs and their underlying principles is available on request from the authors."' The first program to generate theoretical calibration curves of corrected relative intensities vs composition uses the Poole and Thomas atomic number correction' and the Philibert absorption factor' with a voltage-dependent mass absorption coefficient for electrons in the alloy. A modified Castaing fluores- cence correction is also used which includes the effects of both Ka and KO radiation and over voltage.' Once the theoretical curves have been calculated in 1 wt pct intervals, these results are least-squares fit to obtain Ziebold deviation parameters' which are stored in COMMON in the computer memory. The net discrepancies between the original theoretical calibration curve and the regenerated curve using the Ziebold parameter are computed. Although this link is explicitly written for K-K fluorescent interactions, it can be applied to K-L, L-K, and L-L interactions as previously disc~ssed."~ Similar programs have also been written to utilize the Wittry fluorescence correction, Birks combined corrections, and various other corrections.' These modified programs have proved to be quite useful for quantitative comparisons of the results of the various theories. The program for conversion of raw X-ray data to corrected composition includes corrections for drift, backround, and instrumental dead time. The corrected intensities are converted to composition by use of the Ziebold equation"2 and parameter obtained from the program system. The results can be obtained for either atom or weight fractions. In addition to accurately computing interdiffusion coefficients the Matano analysis program calculates least-square smoothed values of concentration, concentration gradient, and curvature for each point on the raw input concentration profile. In order to obtain high accuracies a unique method of performing a least-square polynomial fit to incrementally advancing profile segments which overlap is used.' This program has been successfully modified for use in ternary diffusion problems3 and can readily be modified to handle analysis of diffusion profiles which include phase boundary discontinuities. This link is generally applicable to analysis of interdiffusion data obtained by other techniques as well as by the microprobe. The primary function of the next program is to least-squares fit experimental diffusion data to the normal Arrhenius function: D = Doexp(-Q/RT), to obtain values of Do and Q. In addition the probable error and one, two, and three u statistical confidence limits of DO, Q, and log D are evaluated. This program is also directly useful for analysis of any other simple temperature-activated processes including conductivity, and certain deformation and chemical processes. The program to generate calibration curves for film-thickness determination using the microprobe is based on a numerical integration of the equation derived by Cockett and ~avis.' Values of film thickness obtained by this program for copper on various substrates are in good agreement with measurements made by other techniques. Versions of the above program system have been prepared for use with or without a remote teletype connection to the computer for processing on either a real-time or time-share basis. The instrumentation coupling a microprobe to a teletype for automatic data collection and analysis by the presently described program system has been reported elsewhere by the authors.' If teletype equipment is not used to communicate with the computer, standard methods of card reading and tape reading can be used. In either

The solubility of sulfur in Si-Fe was determined by the metallographic examination of heat-treated and quenched samples. In the absence of manganese, the solubility in 3.1 pct Si-Fe was found to be about 0.010 pct at 1000o C, 0.015 pct at 11000C, and 0.020 pct at 1150°C, which is substatntially less than hitherto reported. Increasing the silicon content was found to decrease the solubility of sulfur, which is consistent with the increase in the activity coefficient of sulfur with increasing silicon content that has been reported for Fe-Si alloys. Manganese additions were studied in alloys containing 3.1 pct Si and between 0.013 and 0.015 pct S. At low manganese levels the solubility product of manganese sulfide was found to be lower than previously reported. THE solubility of sulfur in pure polycrystalline iron has been reported by Rosenquist and Dunicz1 and by Turkdogan et al.2 Samples were equilibrated in atmospheres containing different ratios of H2S/H2. Both groups of investigators found a solubility limit in y iron of 0.013 pct at 1000oC and 0.031 pct at 1200°C. In addition, Rosenquist and Dunicz1 found a solubility limit in a iron of 0.020 pct at 900°C. Ainslie, Hoffman, and seybolt3 found significantly higher sulfur contents in polycrystalline iron samples than in single-crystal samples after heating at 890°C in a sealed tube containing a mixture of powdered iron and FeS made with s35. Whereas the single crystals contained 0.013 and 0.016 pct S (± 0.005 pct), the polycrystalline samples contained between 0.016 and 0.026 pct S. Autoradiographs suggested that the excess sulfur in the polycrystalline samples was due to the segregation of sulfur in solution at grain boundaries. Ainslie and seybolt4 have reported on the solubility of sulfur in 3 pct Si-Fe. Their samples were sealed in capsules containing hydrogen and sufficient sulfur as cobalt sulfide to saturate the sample. After heat treating, the sulfur-rich phase on the surface was removed by abrading, and the sulfur content of the sample was taken as the equilibrium value for that temperature. Before the equilibrating heat treatment, the samples were heated to 1300°C to coarsen the grains. The resulting grain size, which was about 3/18 in. in diam, was considered sufficiently large to preclude a sensible increase in sulfur solubility due to grain boundary segregation. They reported the solubility to be 0.029 pct at 900oC, 0.063 pct at 1000oC, 0.076 pct at 1100°C, 0.122 pct at 1200°C, and 0.098 pct at 1300°C.

FOR over fifty years the Spanish mine, 21 miles northeast of Nevada City, in Nevada County, California, has been one of the Bradley properties. Between 1883 and 1889 it was operated by the late Frederick W. Bradley and P. R. Bradley. The ore averaged only about $1 a ton at that time but the mine was credited with a production of about $900,000 in that period. The property was then closed down until 1922, when the Bradley interests reopened it and continued development for the next nine years, when a 50-ton mill was built. This began operation in April, 1931. This was a selective flotation plant, with the tailing treated on Wilfley tables, and operated on ore from the No. 4 and No. 16 tunnel stopes. The New ldria Mining District is in the southern part of the Diablo mountains of the California Coast Range, 140 miles southeast of San Francisco. The district, noted primarily for quicksilver, also has become important recently as a producer of short-fiber chrysotile asbestos. Between 1853 and 1966, the New Idria district produced 568,092 flasks of quicksilver valued at about $55,600,000, 99 per cent of which was recovered from one deposit, the New Idria mine. In 1944, the district was ranked third in all-time production of North American quicksilver districts, and, since that time, the New Idria mine produced an additional 129,045 flasks, placing the district and the New Idria mine second in all-time production. The major structure of the region is the northwest-trending Coalinga anticline consisting of an asymmetric dome of sedimentary beds ranging in age from Jurassic to Quaternary and marked at its northwest end by an oval body of sheared serpentine 14 miles long by 4 miles wide. The serpentine core, rimmed by Franciscan sandstone of probable Jurassic age, was uplifted in stages between Jurassic and Quaternary time and was intruded along a ring of faults into beds of the Panoche Formation of upper Cretaceous age. The core of serpentine and Franciscan rocks is the locus of about 20 quicksilver mines that rim the faultbounded core and lie within the serpentine mass. The host rock of the most productive deposits is altered Panoche shale and sandstone that lies intermittently along the perimeter of the core. Deposits of the New Idria group of mines and those of a few other small mines lie along the northeast contact in the footwall of the New ldria thrust fault, and a few others occur on steep normal faults around the south and southwest. The chief ore mineral in all quicksilver mines is cinnabar, but minor amounts of metacinnabar and native mercury are found in some of the mines. Ore shoots were deposited in fracture zones and stockworks in altered Panoche shale and sandstone and in definite fissure veins in Franciscan sandstone. Rocks made highly amenable to fracturing by hydrothermal alteration were fractured extensively by late faults. The resulting fracture zones, located along the late faults and at changes in strike or dip of the hanging wall or footwall, are the principal controls of most ore shoots. The largest and richest ore shoots are those of the New Idria mine. The major ore bodies occur in fractured shale and sandstone beneath the New ldria thrust fault at its junction with major tear faults.
