OPINION seems widely divergent as to where we stand with respect to future mineral supply. From some quarters we hear that the United States is about to become a "have-not" nation and about to experience the evil consequences such a situation would entail. Others claim that we are still a treasure house of stored-up mineral wealth, the surface of which barely has been scratched. The data to be presented here support the conclusion that neither of these viewpoints is correct and that we are far from exhaustion of those mineral resources that are basic to our industrial economy. However, exhaustion is well advanced in a number of important subsidiary minerals so that we can no longer drift along with the easy-going philosophy that the earth will provide. The time has come when we must recognize the true situation and do something about it.

It has been proposed1 on the basis of slip and flow that the ideal deformation texture of drawn wire for face-centered cubic metals is a (111) direction parallel to the wire axis. Under these considerations, an intermediate [loo] texture is permissible but should eventually change to the stable [Ill] orientation. This theory does not explain why copper and its alloys containing up to about 30 pct nickel, 5 pct zinc and 1 pct aluminum were found to have a double [Ill], [100] texture, while alloys with at least 8 pct zinc and 2 pct aluminum developed essentially a single [Ill] texture.1,2 It does suggest, however, that the [loo] component of the former alloys should disappear with additional deformation.3 Some evidence exists to support this suggestion. Howald4 reported that annealed copper wire previously drawn 93.8 pct and 98.5 pct developed a single [Ill] texture. Since, in wire, the drawn and annealed textures are similar, these wires probably had a single [Ill] deformation texture before annealing. In addition, although cold rolled polycrystalline copper and 80-20 brass were found to form different types of pole figures,5,6 single crystals of these metals when rolled from the stable (110) [112] orientation were found to produce essentially the same polo figure.7.8 It may be, therefore, that while the addition of solute elements changes the path by which the final texture is obtained, the final texture is not changed. Experimental Results The wires remaining from the previous investigation1 already drawn about 50 pct reduction in diameter were further drawn to 86 pct and then to 96.4 pct total reduction in diameter. The textures were determined after these stages by transmission X ray photograms taken with a copper K-alpha beam rotated 0 degrees toward the wire axis. It was found that the ratio of the [111].] and [100] intensities of the double texture in copper and its alloys containing 0.94 pct aluminum, 30.70 pct nickel, 2.61 pct zinc and 4.99 pct zinc increased from about 3:l for the 50 pct reduction to about 9:l for the 86 pct reduction. After 96.4 pct reduction, these wires exhibited essentially a single [lll] texture. Summary Thus, the drawn wire deformation texture of copper and its alpha solid solution alloys containing aluminum, nickel or zinc is essentially a single [Ill] texture as predicted by theoretical considerations of slip and flow.' For copper and its alloys containing up to about 1 pct aluminum, 5 pct zinc and at least 30 pct nickel, an intermediate [loo] component is found after about 50 pct reduction in diameter, but disappears after about 95 pct reduction in diameter. For alpha solid solution alloys containing at least about 2 pct aluminum and 8 pct zinc the single [Ill] texture is developed considerably more easily and is found after about 50 pct reduction in diameter. The stored and expended energies of an Au-Ag alloy deformed in torsion were investigated as functions of strain, strain rate, and temperature. At room temperature, the stored energy, measured by tin solution calorimetry, increased linearly up to an intermediate strain, above which it was nearly constant; at 78 °K the relation was linear up to fracture. Approximate values of the energy stored at 4 OK indicate a rapid increase below 78 OK. The energy stored by specimens deformed successively at 4o and 78oK changed slowly with increasing second strain from the curve for energy stored at 4 OK (measured after annealing at 78oK) to that for deformation at 78°K. The ratios of the stored to the expended energy at room temperature and 78 oK were unusually large. The additional amount of energy stored at the lower temperature is attributed mainly to an increase in the number and energy of dislocations. The stored energy as a function of strain rate at 4oK (measured after annealing at 78oK) increased to a sharp maximum over a narrow range of strain rates, whereas the expended energy changed only slightly. These effects are explained by the generation of point defects resulting from the enforced nonconservative movement of jogs in fast moving screw dislocations. The effect of straining successively at two strain rates at 4oK was also investigated. Stress-strain curves for 4o, 78oK, and room temperature and the results of micro examination of specimens deformed at these temperatures are also reported. THIS investigation is a continuation of a research program primarily concerned with the effects of variables on the energy relations involved in the deformation of metals. The variables investigated in earlier work have included strain, strain rate, temperature of deformation (room temperature and 78oK), and the type of deformation process. Most of this work has been carried out with Au-Ag alloys. In the investigation reported here, the deformation process was torsion, which had not been used previously in the program. The stored and expended energies involved in the deformation process were measured as functions of strain, strain rate and the temperature of deformation in the range 4" to 373" K. The microhardness and microstructure of deformed specimens were also investigated. The relation between stored energy and strain differs for different deformation processes.1,2 In general, the stored energy increases with strain and may attain a nearly constant value at large strains. This value and the rate at which it is reached, however, depend on the process of deformation. This dependence has been attributed, at least in part, to differences in the effective strain rate and rise in temperature of the specimen during deformation. The effects of the temperature of deformation on both the stored energy and the energy expended in the working process have been the subject of only a few investigations.3-6 Values of these quantities at low temperatures are of special interest as they yield information on point defects which, for many metals, is not obtainable at higher temperatures. The effect of the strain rate on the stored and expended energies has received little attention The strain rate has usually been measured only in relative terms, and hence the interpretation of its effect on the stored energy has been mainly comparative.

Adolph Greiner, Seraing, Belgium:—I have nothing special to add to Professor Hubert's paper except to say that there are some little things that it would be well to have corrected when the paper comes to be published. In dealing with the thermal efficiency of the engine, you will find that the 29.84 per cent. was a very high one. Professor Hubert has forgotten those engines built under the Cockerill type, but he has referred to them in Appendix 11. At our works at Cockerill we have built 63 engines, giving 63,000 h.p., and the other companies who have received licenses have built 113 engines, making 103,000 h.p., and aggregating 176 engines and 166,000 h.p. Eight years ago I had the pleasure of giving to the Institute the results obtained up to that time. Since then a good many engines have been constructed. In 1898 I thought a blast-furnace producing 100 tons of pig iron would allow 3,000 h.p. Professor Witz and Professor Hubert show that with the same production of pig the new engines take 3,800 h.p. out of the gas. At present at Cockerill we make 700 to 800 tons of pig iron per day, and we hope to have 26,000 h.p. in a few years. At present we have only half of that in gas-engines, but we hope to have in five or six years all the gas out of these furnaces to the number of 25,000 or 26,000 h.p. A LL over our great country I have been privileged to see, during the last six weeks, the manifestation of a new spirit among engineers. Partly under the inspiration of leaders whose influence has been felt not only nationally, but internationally, - partly through the recognition of the service that engineers have been able to render to the nation during the recent crisis, a new self-consciousness has been acquired by the individuals, and now this self-consciousness seeks expression in opportunities for service and participation in public affairs. The engineer . no longer sees himself a mere reservoir of information to be tapped when some one is in need of cold facts, no. more an administrator of mere material things, but a potential administrator of- public affairs, a citizen and a human being, with the responsibilities, as well as the privileges of citizenship.

CINNABAR was discovered in southwestern Arkansas on Little Missouri River in sec. 1, T.7S., R.26W., in April, 1930, and near Antoine Creek in sec. 28, T.6S., R.23W., some 15 miles farther east in May of the same year. It was not, however, until June, 1931, that cinnabar was identified as such in a specimen from the original discovery area sent to W. M. Weigel1 by Walter F. Hintze of Murfreesboro. Almost simultaneously2, in July, 1931, Moritz Norden of Hot Springs identified specimens from the Antoine Creek area as cinnabar. Immediate interest in the district followed the identification of cinnabar and by January, 1932, the district was known to extend as a mineralized belt about one mile wide trending east-northeast from sec. 13, T.7S., R.27W., in Howard County-across central Pike County and into Clark County to sec. 19, T.6S., R.23W., thence extending southeast into sections 33 and 34 of the same township. Since then, cinnabar has been found in sec. 6, T.7S., R.22W., thus giving a total east-west length to the district of approximately 30 miles. Interest focused mainly on the two discovery areas, with the result that mining development has progressed most rapidly in those localities. In the Antoine Creek area the Arkansas Quicksilver Co. has done con-siderable exploration work and has retorted the high-grade ore so .obtained. In the Little Missouri area the Southwestern Quicksilver Co. has had a 12-ton rotary furnace in more or less continuous operation since April, 1932, and has been the largest producer in the district.

AN EDITORIAL on the Strike Situation in the Coal mining industry in the New York Evening Post of Nov. 4, 1919, gave what purported to be statistics of the Department of Labor, for a period of two weeks, which showed an average for the year, based on these two weeks, of 32% hours per week. This mode of arriving at the number of hours per week, while not accurate, is not so far off from the facts as to call for any special comment. The report of the U. S. Geological Survey, Department of Coal Statistics, give so the number of days worked in 1917 as 243; reducing the same to hours per week, assuming 8 hours per day, shows a weekly operation of mines at an average of 36J4 hours. But this assumption is not exactly correct, for the reason that it is not very often that the miners work the full 8 hours per day. There are many explanations for this, but it is not pertinent to this statement to discuss them now, as the important thing to consider is whether a 30-hour week would be for the best interest of not only the men themselves, but the public or country in general.

STREAM pollution caused by waste waters from mineral industry operations is a problem that has grown up with the industry. Its importance to each operator is dependent on the amount and type of waste he dumps into the rivers and streams; on whether this waste pollutes the waters sufficiently to make them unfit for potable water, irrigation, and conservation of wild life; and on whether this waste makes a safety or health hazard. Through the years our growing population and industry have made increasing demands on the mineral industries, the suppliers of the raw materials on which our industries are based; and we have met these demands at some sacrifice to the natural beauty and cleanliness of our country. The heats of formation at 273°K of 6 silver-rich Ag-Cd solid solutions and the heat of formation at 78°K of one solid solution have been measured by tin solution calorimetry. The heats of formation are analyzed in terms of the quasichemical theory. If the enthalpy diffel-ence between a hypothetical fcc form and the hcp form of cadmium is taken into account, this analysis does not lead to the conclusion put forth in the literature that electronic effects make significant contributions to the heats of formation of silver-rich Ag-Cd solid solutions. The temperature dependence of the heats of formation is appreciable and negative near 78ºK, but decreases gradually to nearly zero abore 400°K. The relative partial enthalpies per grarn -atom of silver at 541°K and cadmium at 532" and 541°K in tin have also been determined. THE composition range of the silver-rich Ag-Cd solid solutions stable at room temperature extends to about 40 at. pct Cd. Heats of formation of these solid solutions at 308" and 723°K have been measured by solution calorimetry.1,2 Heats of formation for an average temperature of 800°K have also been calculated from vapor pressures.2,3 The heats of formation deviate from the values predicted by the quasichemical theory above about 30 at. pct Cd. This deviation has been attributed to electronic effects at the Brillouin zone boundaries.2 The heats of formation of Ag-Cd alloys are essentially the same at 308", 723", and 800°K; consequently the temperature dependence of the heat of formation d?H/dT = ?Cp is vanishingly small, although from the exothermic heats of formation a negative value would have been expected. In the investigation reported here the heats of formation at 273°K of 6 silver-rich Ag-Cd solid solutions and the heat of formation at 78°K of 1 solid solution have been measured by tin solution calorimetry. The results are analyzed in terms of the quasichemical theory and the dependence of the heats of formation on temperature is discussed. The relative partial enthalpies per gram-atom of silver in tin at 541" and cadmium in tin at 532" and 541°K were obtained in the course of this investigation. The values of the temperature dependence of the relative partial enthalpies per gram-atom of silver in tin derived from the data reported by various investigators2,4-9 are contradictory. The literature contains only a value for 517°K of the relative partial enthalpy per gram-atom of solid cadmium in tin.2 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Samples of Ag-Cd solid solutions were prepared by melting weighed amounts of silver (99.99 pct pure) and cadmium (99.95 pct pure) in graphite crucibles under a flux of molten potassium chloride.10 The solidified ingots were sealed in evacuated Vycor tubes and annealed at 775°K for 10 days. The ingots were swaged and drawn into wires. The wires, sealed in evacuated Pyrex tubes, were held at 725°K for 5 hr and cooled to 365°K at an average rate of 2.5ºK per hr, followed by furnace cooling to room temperature. Chemical analysis of samples taken from different parts of each ingot gave no indication of segregation. Metallographic examination showed the samples to be homogeneous. Samples of the solid solutions or of the component elements were added to tin-rich baths in a calorimeter." At the start of a run the bath consisted of pure tin. Silver was used in the form of wire of 0.01-in. diam as supplied and cadmium in the form of lumps. Gold (99.999 pct pure) was added with the samples in order to reduce the endothermic heat effect of additions of Ag-Cd solid solutions. Samples of only one composition were added in a run and the ratio of the weight of alloy to that of gold was the same in all additions of a given run. In each run several calibrating additions of tin were made from 273°K. The heat contents of tin were calculated from the following equation, which is based on published data:12 (HTºK- H279º) = 6.70 T - 72,300/T + 20 cal/gram-atom; 505°K < T < 650°K The heat effect of each addition was plotted against the average of the sum of the atom fractions of solutes in the solution before and after that addition. The total concentration of solutes at the end of a run was less than 2 at. pct. In this range the heat effect was a linear function of the atom fraction of the solutes. The heat effect at infinite dilution and the composition dependence of the heat effect were obtained from the plots. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Evaluation of Data. The linear dependence on composition of the heat effects of additions suggests that in the dilute range the enthalpy interaction coefficients other than the first-order coefficients of silver, cadmium, and gold are negligible, as shown in a concurrent publication.13 The heat effects at infinite dilution and the values of the composition dependence of the heat effects are listed in Table I.

The equilibrium Mn + 2 IiCl = MnCl2(g) + H2 has been studied at 1090°C for pure manganese and for Mn-Si alloys. For this reoction a standard free energy of Fo1363, = - 19,700 i 300 col ioas found. Combined with other thermal data, the standard free energy of the reaction Mn(s, ß) + Cl2 = MnCl2(g) was derived: Fo=- 56,140 + 9.78 T log T - 40.10 T For the formation of the various manganese silicides the following free energies were obtained. 5 Mn + 3 Si - M1z5Si3 ?F°1363 = -41,500 i 1500 cal Mn + Si - h.lnSi ?F°1363= -10,000 i 500 cnl Mn + 2 Si = MnSiz ?F°1363= -11,500 ± 500 cal In the search for a method suitable for the study of thermodynamic properties of certain alloy systems, it was found that the heterogeneous equilibrium between the alloy and a gas mixture consisting of hydrogen chloride, hydrogen, and volatile metal chlorides has considerable advantages. In addition to giving thermodynamic information about the alloys, such measurements may be used to derive thermodynamic data for the volatile metal chloride itself. The present paper gives some results which were obtained for manganese silicides and manganous chloride. Similar studies are presently being carried out for the iron silicides. The phase diagram of the Mn-Si system is rather well known,&apos; but no information exists to the authors&apos; knowledge about the thermodynamic properties of manganese silicides or about the chemical activities in molten Mn-Si alloys. At elevated temperature, manganese may react with hydrogen chloride according to the equation: Mn(s, ß ) + 2 HC1 = MnC1, (g ) + H2 [ 1] with the equilibrium constant The value of K, may be determined from measurements of the gas composition in equilibrium with pure manganese. When this value is used in connection with measurements on manganese alloys, the chemical activity of manganese in the alloy may be derived. Initial calculations showed that around 1000" to 1200°C the equilibrium constant K1 has a value of a few thousand, i.e., the reaction is shifted far to the right. In order to study this rather unbalanced gas composition, a flow method was used in two slightly different modifications. For all experiments with manganese silicides and for some experiments with pure manganese the apparatus shown on Fig. 1 was used. A bed of the metal or alloy was placed in a tube furnace. The refractory tube had an internal diameter of 14 mm and the bed was 75 mm long. Electrolytic manganese of high purity and silicon, 99.95 pct Si, were used as raw materials. All alloys were prepared by melting weighed amounts of the elements in a high frequency induction furnace in argon atmosphere. The melting was done in a silica crucible which was placed inside a graphite shell. The alloys were crushed to - 10 +40 mesh and analyzed chemically. Also, for the pure elements, the same size fraction was used. A controlled gas mixture of purified hydrogen and from 3 to 12 pct HC1 was passed through the bed where it reacted with manganese according to Eq. [I]. The Blast Furnace Studies Section, Metallurgieal Division, Bureau of Mines, has been working for several years on the mechanism of desulphurization of iron and steel by slags. The usual assumption that desulphurization takes place by diffusion of FeS from metal into slag and subsequent reaction of this FeS with CaO to produce CaS has seemed to us inconsistent with a number of experimental results we have obtained. We undertook, for example, to determine the proportion of sulphur in a slag present as FeS. An entirely satisfactory method of doing this has not yet been evolved. The results of extraction with metallic antimony led to an interesting conclusion, however. FeS is readily soluble in metallic antimony, either physically or by chemical reaction. On the other hand, CaS was found to be insoluble. Hence it would appear that by rapid extraction of the slag with antimony we might expect to determine the distribution of sulphur between iron and calcium. The results showed that much of the sulphur was present as FeS. In some instances the extraction of sulphur as FeS was almost quantitative. For example, in a slag containing 3.8 grams Fe and 3.7 grams S, extraction removed 1.18 grams S and 2.12 grams Fe. If all the iron present in the antimony had been FeS, 1.21 grams S would have been extracted. In another slag with 8.6 grams Fe and 0.06 gram S present, 0.14 gram Fe and 0.08 gram S were extracted. This was obviously extraction of sulphur as FeS within the analytical error and showed that FeS was present either in solution or as a dispersion. Attempts to determine the solubility of FeS and CaS in slag by quenching and ultramicroscopic investigation have indicated that the solubility of FeS is very low, and that reactions in the slag are probably not to be considered as homogeneous. A more detailed report on these theoretical considerations will be made at a later date.

Equilibrium data are reported on the composition and densities of coexisting vapor and liquid phases as a function of Pressure and temperature for four hydrocarbon systems prepared from crude oil and natural gas. The data were observed over a range of pressures from 1000 to 8220 Ib. per sq. in. and at temperatures ranging from 35&apos; to 250°F. The compositions of the hydrocarbon systems were such that the critical temperatures of the mixtures were lower than the range of the investigation. Under these conditions, it is shown that the composition of the systems has a marked effect upon both the absolute value of the equilibrium constants and the change of the constants with pressure for the several components comprising the system. From weight-balance considerations, it has been possible to construct the partial phase diagram of a mixture of a 49.9" A.P.I. crude oil and natural gas having a gas-oil ratio of 3660 cu. ft. per barrel. Descriptions of the apparatus used, the analytical procedure, the material used, and the equilibrium measurements are included. A knowledge of the physical behavior of naturally occurring hydrocarbon mixtures is fundamental to the treatment of many problems in the production, transportation and rehing of petroleum. The recent discoveries of pools having formation pressures up to 7500 lb. per sq. in. and higher, and the development of full-scale equipment to operate at pressures of 5000 lb. per sq. in. or more have greatly increased the need for knowledge of the composition, temperature, pressure and density relationships of coexisting vapor and liquid hydrocarbon phases. The following paper presents the results of investigations upon 22 mixtures of natural gas and crude oil of known com~o~itio~ that had been brought to equilibrium under controlled conditions of temperature and pressure. Data are presented upon the densities and compositions of the coexisting vapor and liquid phases for four different systems containing hydrocarbon material having boiling points from minus 2 5S°F. to well over I000 F. The data were observed Over a pressure range from Iooo Ib. per Sq. in to 8220 lb. Per sq. in. and a temperature range from 35&apos; to 2 50°F. The accepted method of computing the physical relationship between two coexisting phases of a hydrocarbon mixture is by use of the "equilibrium constant" K as proposed by Souders, Selheimer, and Brown. definition,

Equilibrium data are reported on the composition and densities of coexisting vapor and liquid phases as a function of Pressure and temperature for four hydrocarbon systems prepared from crude oil and natural gas. The data were observed over a range of pressures from 1000 to 8220 Ib. per sq. in. and at temperatures ranging from 35&apos; to 250°F. The compositions of the hydrocarbon systems were such that the critical temperatures of the mixtures were lower than the range of the investigation. Under these conditions, it is shown that the composition of the systems has a marked effect upon both the absolute value of the equilibrium constants and the change of the constants with pressure for the several components comprising the system. From weight-balance considerations, it has been possible to construct the partial phase diagram of a mixture of a 49.9" A.P.I. crude oil and natural gas having a gas-oil ratio of 3660 cu. ft. per barrel. Descriptions of the apparatus used, the analytical procedure, the material used, and the equilibrium measurements are included. THE propaganda in favor of the adoption of the metric system of weights and measures in the United States is founded upon the idea of compulsory adoption. There can be no argument about this, for the metric system has been legal, by Act of Congress, in the United States since 1866. Nobody ought to oppose an educational movement, and if pro-metric activities were confined to that there might be no reason to gainsay them. I do not propose to enter into any discussion of &apos;the relative merits of the metric and the English systems of weights and measures. The simple case is that the metric system not having made much headway in the United States after more than 50 years of legality, &apos;it is now aimed to force it upon the people by legislative compulsion. The main arguments in favor of such compulsory adoption are that it would- simplify the education of our children and would promote our foreign trade, for the reason that more countries of the world, with which we do business, use the metric system than the English system. I am going to disregard,&apos; in this contribution, the first of these arguments, for it is largely conjectural." Not so with the other, which is specific, and being so its speciousness can be, proved. It is true that the metric system is used by more countries of the world than the, English system. It is commonly stated that of the Indo-European nations only the United States, Great Britain, and her colonies, and Russia have failed to adopt it. However, if with "colonies" we equate Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania and South Africa, we have a longer list of non-metric countries, and it comprises not only the most populous, but also the most industrial nations of the world.
