A mathematical model of a decision is represented by the table in Figure 4. The numbers in the matrix are a measure of the effectiveness of each alternate for an objective. In this case, it is the per cent of desired profit that is satisfied by each alternate for each objective. By adding all of the values in a row, we have a measure of which alternative is best for both objectives. However, if you think that alternate 1 is necessarily better than alternate 2, you are wrong. Why? Because the weight of the objectives may not be equal. It could just be that this plant can sell more than it can produce, so that the loss in profit represented by increased sales is more than twice as important as reductions in costs. (See Figure 5). In that case, let us weigh objective 1 as 30 per cent and objective 2 as 70 per cent. It must also be obvious that the sum of all the "objective weights" must equal 100 per cent. To satisfy this apparent need, the writers submit this paper which contains material derived from various sources, and for which the writers make no claim of originality. "CANMET’s research into underground coal mining is primarily conducted at the Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory (CBCRL), established in 1981 to conduct safety research in underground coal mines. Located close to Canada’s largest underground coal producer, in the Sydney Coalfield of Nova Scotia, CBCRL’s program also includes the two western underground coal operations. CBCRL is a relatively small laboratory with a staff of thirteen — eight professionals and five support staff — with an annual budget of over $1 million. In order to maintain effective research response, flexibility is key and staff are increasingly working in project teams, crossing traditional section ties and also drawing from specialist expertise elsewhere within CANMET.CBCRL’s research activities have had a substantial impact on the Canadian underground coal mining industry, particularly in Cape Breton. CBCRL contributed to Cape Breton Development Corporation’s (CBDC’s) threefold reduction in lost-time accidents in the 1980s. Also, in the last four years alone, CBCRL’s work has enabled CBDC to save over $17 million in improved utilisation of reserves and cost savings. The work embraces the three traditional areas of mine environment, strata mechanics and mining technologies, however the current direction has been strongly influenced by recent external and internal factors. It is timely to review progress and recent directions."

IN a paper published three years ago,' the term "silicic chemistry" was used for the first time to emphasize the increasing importance of the chemistry of silicon in science and technology. The development through which the colloid chemistry of siliceous matter has gone since then is in itself ample proof that the coining of this new term for this branch of colloid science was not presumptuous. Until quite recently, however, silicic chemistry concerned itself only with the composition and colloidal properties of natural and synthetic siliceous matter, but had not paid much attention to the genesis of this matter, particularly to that of the clay minerals. What is even more disturbing, particularly from an educational point of view, is the fact that neither mineralogy, geology, nor metallurgy has fully realized the important role colloidal phenomena must have played in the genesis of our planet and the formation of minerals generally speaking. Considering the importance of colloid chemistry today in the fields just mentioned, it is not surprising that the theories most agreed upon by geologists and mineralogists for the origin of clay minerals are not acceptable from a strictly colloid chemical point of view for the genesis of these most important and most abundant components of the earth. Of all the theories pertaining to the origin of clay minerals, those still most accepted by geologists and mineralogists are the "residual clay" and the "transported clay" theories.15 The former is based primarily on the assumption that the formation of clay minerals is the result of surface weathering of fresh rocks, or is due to the action of solutions. In many construction projects and in most quarrying operations drilling and blasting remains the only feasible method of loosening rock in the removal of rock or overburden, the development of the quarry and in the production process of crushed stone. Often, a blasting plan is required for the project or the quarry’s permit with primary concerns over safety and site security, and compliance with environmental regulations or standards. From this plan, a blasting program has to be developed considering the varying requirements of production, the advance of the mineral extraction and the environmental impact. The actual blast design requires a planning and optimization process. This optimization process is driven by the blasting technicians/engineers, project or mine management and often by community concerns. The blast design process comprises the selection of blast parameters, including the explosives, and the actual layout of the blast. Design tools and controls range from conventional methods based on established blasting practices to advanced design tools or computer models. Blast monitoring and evaluation can also range from empirical to advanced blast assessment. The data and information from each blast or a series of blasts can further be used in the optimization process. Its success depends upon recording the data, the timely transformation of the data to relevant information, and the development of process oriented knowledge. The elements of the blast design process are summarized and described with examples of state-of-the art engineering controls. The reporting and monitoring of individual blasts is discussed with respect to data management and information systems. A conceptual overview of the components and interfaces of a blasting program is given and discussed on the background of technical, management and community concerns.

We Americans fondly believe that ours is the greatest , most progressive and most civilized country in the world , but the cold statistical facts reveal that we apparently have little appreciation for the lives of those whose efforts of various kinds give us whatever greatness we have . The latest available statistics indicate that the annual death rate per 100,000 persons , from accidents is nearly 80 , or far higher than that of any other country in the world ; it is more than double the rate in Denmark , Belgium, Netherlands , France , Sweden , Italy , Ireland , Germany , Norway, and Austria; it is practically double the rate in England and Wales and in Japan , and is from 25 to 60 per cent higher than the corresponding rate in Scotland , New Zealand , Australia, Switzerland , and Canada . And added to this is the fact that of the main industries of the United States mining has by far the worst accident record , viewed from either the frequency or the severity basis . The National Safety Council's latest figures for 27 of the country's main industries give mining the highest or worst accident frequency rate, 74.43 in 1929 ; meat packing comes next with 55.94 , and construction third with 50.41 . In accident severity in 1929 mining also was the worst offender , with a rate of 9.99 ; quarrying is second with 6.11 , and construction third with 4.62 . Metal mining's frequency rate in 1929 was 52.16 , as against 69.25 for bituminous coal mining ,99.68 for anthracite mining, and 74.43 for the entire mining industry ; accident severity for metal mining in 1929 was 5.99 , as against 11.69 for bituminous coal mining , 10.87 for anthracite mining , and 9.99 for the mining industry as a whole . Although this figure indicated that metal mining is on a much safer plane than either bituminous or anthracite coal mining, the frequency rate of 52.16 for metal mining was higher in 1929 than the frequency rate of all but one of the other 26 industries about which data are available ; the metal mining severity rate of 5.99 , while much better

An autobiography, the story of a Hoosier boy who fought his way to manhood and power through early misfortune and poverty, from street urchin and newsboy, to editor and author; from lumberjack and dock walloper to statesman and Governor of Michigan. The reader has the measure of the man in the first chapter, a dramatic recital of how the fighting boy editor cleaned up a lawless mining camp of 40 years ago. The thread of the narrative is the author's life-long devotion to outdoor living, ex-ploration and travel. Residing in Sault de Sainte Marie, Mich., in the heart of the Lake Superior country, he took his delight and, incidentally, found his fortune in prospecting the north woods for iron ore; eventually, extending his travels to the continents and many of the islands of the world, he discovered what, he believes-to be a great iron range in Madagascar. In this book there is plenty of anecdote, a great deal of wholesome social and po¬litical philosophy and some interesting sidelights on the characters of some of the author's prominent contemporaries in the political life of Michigan. The style is direct and animated, flavored and illuminated with the vernacular of Hoosierdom and the woods country of the North. The author levies on the vocabulary of the sciences and the classics for many a noun and adjective and, with Rooseveltian license, now and then coins a word. The low production rates associated with the underground metal mining industry have received considerable attention during the last decade. A number of significant technological advancements, in the form of new equipment, have taken place to improve the economics of ore production. Unfortunately, an extremely important factor in the equation -- the operator protection and safety -- continues to receive a low priority. The underground metal mining industry has one of the poorest industrial safety records in the United States. Equipment operators are constantly being placed in hazardous situations. Even one fatality is one too many. All of us bear the responsibility to eliminate it. This project is one of the important steps currently being undertaken by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to improve the operational safety of seven major pieces of ore handling equipment commonly used in underground metal and non-metal mines. The objectives of this study are; (a) to identify the existing hazards associated with the operation of the specific equipment, and (b) to recommend practical solutions that will minimize these hazards and reduce operator injuries. These recommendations are to be in the areas of equipment design improvements, additional operator protection and warning devices, equipment operating procedures and any modifications to the existing safety regulations.

This report contains the papers presented at the Technology Transfer Seminar on Ground Control Aspects of Coal Mine Design held by the Bureau of Mines on March 6, 1973, in Lexington, Ky. Seminar attendance consisted of representatives from the coal mining industry, universities, mining consultants, instrument manufacturers, and local, State, and Federal Government. The purpose of this meeting, one of a series of Technology Transfer seminars, was to provide the coal mining industry with detailed information about recently developed techniques, equipment, and instruments which can be used in the solution of coal mine design problems and to discuss results and direction of research in mine design. This old and well-known method of determining silver is, in bullion work, so far superior to the furnace-assay that it is looked upon with reverential awe by many, if not by most, users, and its ease of execution, with proper equipment, commends it highly where much commercial bullion work on silver is required. The method is so thoroughly well known that a description of it here may seem to be unnecessary, but many thousands of determinations are annually made by it in the U. S. Mint Service and its practice is there reduced to an art. This is necessary both for the sake of economy of time, and because high-grade work with it requires constant practice. It is useless for a person who uses it only occasionally to expect to attain high accuracy with it, without spending more time upon a detemination than is warranted in a busy commercial laboratory. It is always employed in the Mint service whenever possible, but its chief field is in the determination of silver in standard silver (ingots and coin), which is 900 fine in silver and 100 fine in copper, and I shall first briefly outline its use on this metal and then take up various points in detail, especially as related to the accuracy of the results obtained. For this determination 1,115 mg. of standard metal are weighed and transferred to a glass-stoppered bottle, the metal is dissolved in nitric acid, and 100 cc. of a standard solution of NaCl run in. The bottle is then vigorously shaken and a measured portion of a decimal salt solution added, and again shaken, if necessary. These operations are repeated until the silver is precipitated. Standard metal being 900 fine, 1,115 mg. should carry 1,003.5 mg. of silver, which is a convenient figure to work with.

This report summarizes the work performed under USBM contract J0100018. The purpose of this work was to document the currently available noise control techniques that can be incorporated into new coal preparation plants during the design stage. This was accomplished by reviewing the related experience of the contractor and subcontractor (Bolt Beranek and Newman Inc.), conducting an extensive literature search, visiting operating coal preparation plants, and contacting various equipment manufacturers. The treatments addressed include equipment substitution, changes in plant layout, and retrofit treatments for existing equipment.

Graphite, a mineral form of pure carbon, is one of the most versatile minerals in industry, because of its varying physical properties and characteristics. The mineral occurs naturally in the form of tubular crystals or microcrystalline earthy lumps, or it is disseminated in rocks, which have undergone intense metamorphism. India has a large deposition of graphite minerals out of which about 43% are found in Arunachal Pradesh. However, compared to the rest of the country, the North-East Region and particularly Arunachal Pradesh has not attracted attention till date for detail investigation for characterization, beneficiation, prospecting and/or exploitation of the mineral resources including graphite. Bulk graphite sample were collected from upper Subanshiri district of Arunachal Pradesh. Chemical analysis of the representative samples were carried out and found that 7.29%, 19.60% and 6.07% of fixed carbon (FC) is present in graphite sample collected from La-Lamdak, Bopi and Taliha, Arunachal Pradesh, respectively. Chemical analysis of the ash of the graphite sample shows presence of impurities such as silica, Al2O3, Fe2O3, Ca, Mg etc in the graphite sample which are also supported by XRD and SEM-EDX investigation. The graphite samples of Arunachal Pradesh are low grade and do not fulfill the market requirement for the industrial applications. Therefore, low-grade graphite is subjected to beneficiation for the upgradation of the graphite for industrial applications. We have adopted the dispersion?cum-settling technique for the beneficiation of the graphite sample collected from Arunachal Pradesh. The FC of 40.21% with 41.17% raw graphite recovery which is equivalent to 71.02% carbon recovery have been obtained by gravity separation technique using only distilled water without any chemical reagent in case of graphite sample collected from Bopi, Arunachal Pradesh. The graphite sample is upgraded up to 47.75% FC with 41.91% raw graphite recovery, which is equivalent to 85.85% carbon recovery with the pH adjustment at 9 with NaOH. An advanced water-in-oil emulsion hydraulic fluid has been developed which meets defined laboratory performance criteria and which has given fully satisfactory results in a one-year underground mine test in two continuous miners. A novel method of monitoring fluid water content was demonstrated and incorporated into a test kit for use at or near the mine site. Test fluid fire resistance integrity as measured by the MSHA Schedule 30 procedure was maintained during the test and important fire resistance test variables identified.

This report summarizes the U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluation of the mineral resources of eight roadless areas in several National Forests in Montana. The areas are amoung those that have been proposed as additions to the National Wilderness Presevation System In various sessions of the U.S. Congress. Mineral Commodities present include gold (lode and placer), silver, copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, tungsten, rare-earth elements, fluorite, and barite. Numerous mineral deposit types occur. Past production was from gold placers and vein-type deposits. There is potential for development of large volume porphyry copper-molybdenum, disseminated gold, stratabound copper-silver, and exhalative massive-sulfide metallic deposits. A substantial increase in metal prices is needed before any known vein-type deposits will be economic.

Immediately following the capitulation of Germany in World War II, the German State was occupied by various allied forces, who supervised all indus- trial activities in the area. Coal production is vital to the industrial life of Germany, and most of the coal is mined in the American- and British- occupied zones of western Germany. The British-occupied zones include the Aachen and Ruhr districts, from which approximately 90 percent of the coal is obtained. Figure 1 is a map of the Ruhr district. Because of the magni- tude of the task of insuring an adequate supply of coal and the necessity for united action, it was deemed best to reorganize the coal-producing facilities in the British zone undor the joint supervision of American and British authorities. As a result, the UK/US Coal Control Group was established accord- ing to the organization plan indicated in figure 2. Headquarters for the group was established at Essen, in Villa Huegol, the prewar home of the Krupp family (fig. 3). One of the many problems recognized immediately by the UK/US Coal Control Group was the necessity of preventing disasters and reducing accidents to work- men in mines undor military-governmont control. Consequently, the United States Bureau of Mines was requested to furnish the services of qualified men to search for the hazards incident to coal mining and to prepare comprehensive reports on the results of their investigations. The authors, who wore selected for this task, spont about a year in Germany and visited all except a few of the smaller mince. Whereas their principal purpose was to investi- gate safety conditions, somo of the operating conditions and practices also wore studied. The results of the studies and investigations are embodied in this circular with the hope that some useful information will be disseminated to the mining industry of the United States, including supervisory officials, safety directors, engineers, and mine workmon.

IT will perhaps be wise to define my terms in begin-ning to talk about my subject, especially so where the popular and commercial terminology are as con-fused as they are in the case of zinc. While our French friends know zinc by its true name, and we find Balzac, Daudet, and other literary celebrities using it correctly in their novels, it is quite the contrary in English, particularly here in America. The quotation of a definition for zinc recently appearing in one of our leading technical magazines, "zinc is the place where they wash the dishes," will emphasize the difference. Zinc suffered in the first place by becoming an article of commerce long after its alloys with copper were in common use under the name of brass. Then again, when the art of zinc coating iron and steel objects was commercialized, we called it galvanizing, which is really a meaningless term. The French and Germans use the obvious terms-zinguerie and verzinken-for the opera-tion. Since these two uses of zinc, brass making and galvanizing, have been by far the largest consumers of zinc, is it any wonder that the popular knowledge of zinc is as vague as it is? In fact, since the disappear-ance of the sheet of zinc along with the parlor stove, the zinc-lined bath tub and refrigerator, there has been little popular contact in this country with the undis-guised metal zinc. On the Continent, where zinc has been used for over a hundred years under its real name, particularly for roofing and building purposes, the situ-ation is quite different. It is quite refreshing to turn for a moment to the contrast offered by my friend, Dr. Merica's specialty, nickel. They put 2 or 3 per cent of it into steel, and we have nickel-steel, or a larger amount into an alloy, and we have nickel-silver. To be sure there is no silver there, but what need that matter, nickel is used in the alloy and is first in the name. They plate with nickel and call it nickel-plating, no galvanizing about that. And, finally, they take that noble coin which admits us daily to underground New York, composed of three parts of copper and one part nickel, and get away with nickel as its popular name.

The social economy, or public interest, and national defense require wise development and efficient use of the oil and gas resources of the United States. In this development and use, and in the prevention of economic and physical waste of oil and gas, the objectives of the petroleum and natural-gas industries, the Government (Federal, State, and local), and the public are the same. Differences of viewpoint generally have originated in the failure of one of the triad to have a clear or complete understanding of the motives behind the activities of the other component groups or full knowledge of what each is trying to accomplish. The Unites States Bureau of Mines through its petroleum and natural-gas division makes technologic and scientific investigations pertaining to recovery,3 preparation, refining, and use of oil and natural gas with the view of reducing waste, increasing safety and efficiency and aiding economic development.

Coal research and related activities in 1964 by the Bureau of Mines resulted in many advances in the production, preparation, and utilization of this valuable natural resource. Mining research during the year was marked by work on hydraulic mining, coalbed degasification, mine drainage control, mine sealing, strip-mine rehabilitation, and quenching of mine-refuse fires. Bureau research continued to produce information leading to increased safety in underground mining. Such research included roof and rib control via bolting and bonding, pressure monitoring of coal and mine rock during mining operations, and development of safety devices for detecting conditions leading to roof falls. Other safety work was continued on methane detectors, coal-dust suppression, and mine venti lation equipment and techniques. Mine explosion and explosives research, mine equipment and materials, safety rule modernization, and safety education and training of mine workmen were continued. Coal storage and preparation work in 1964 ranged from freezeproofing of lignite for rail shipment, through washability studies of coals and washing equipment, to research on new ways to remove ash and sulfur from coal. Electric power production, which ,accounts for a major portion of the market for coal, received further study. Unique power generation systems, inc luding coal-burning gas turbine and megnetohydrodynamic generators, were intensively investigated. Conventional power systems were improved through continuation of work on furnace performance, powerplant stack gas purification, and engineering and boiler water service.
