This paper summarizes the development of a mechanistic model to predict longwall mining induced surface subsidence. The model was originally developed from data acquired from a recent field study conducted in Northern West Virginia. Additional data has been collected from published sources and used to refine the model. The original model utilizes a negative exponential equation to predict the subsidence profile after the maximum possible subsidence is predicted based on the following input parameters: mine geometry, angle of draw and expansion factors for the deformation zones that have been identified above a longwall excavation. The model refinement involved the development of relationships between physical properties of the overburden strata and angle of draw in addition to the expansion or bulking factors. Therefore the refined model now requires only mine geometry and a typical geologic column from the site to predict the subsidence profile. This paper provides the methodology that enables the model to determine the angle of draw and expansion factors breed on physical properties of the site geology i. e. percent of strong rock and Rock Quality Designation of the overburden strata. In addition :comparisons of predicted results with measured data for over H) different sites with various geological and geometrical parameters located throughout the United States will be presented.

"It has been suggested that the pre-concentration of ore underground can bring positive economic and environmental benefits to underground mining, particularly at extreme depth. The integration of mineral processing systems for coarse waste rejection and disposal into the underground mining environment has a substantial impact on the economics and operation of the mine. A case study for the integration of underground pre-concentration at Falconbridge’s Thayer Lindsley and Fraser Copper operations in Sudbury, Ontario is discussed, with particular focus on ore evaluation, system design, integration, and impacts on the operation. Conclusions as to the overall feasibility and potential impacts of underground pre-concentration are presented.INTRODUCTIONObjectivesA scoping investigation has been conducted for Falconbridge Ltd on the Fraser Copper Zone and Thayer Lindsley mines in order to develop a better understanding of the operations, and to do a preliminary evaluation of the potential for pre-concentration of the ore underground. The objective was to develop a conceptual design and evaluation of a pre-concentration system for each site. The results are to be used as the basis for a more detailed future study.Underground Pre-ConcentrationThe pre-concentration of ore to reduce the quantity and improve the quality of material transported to the processing plant is not a new concept and has been in practise at several mines including the American Zinc Company in Mascot Tennessee (Munro et al, 1982), the Sullivan Mine in British Columbia and presently at Xstrata’s Mt Isa lead-zinc mine in Australia, as well as at several PGM mines operating in the South African Bushveld. For each of these mines, a high degree of waste rejection was achieved at a coarse particle size with good metallurgical recoveries. The benefits arising from the surface pre-concentration of ore are well documented in the literature (McCullough et al, 1999; Miller et al, 1978; Munro et al, 1982; Schena et al, 1990; Sivamohan & Forssberg, 1991)."

This paper addresses historical aspects and construction sequencing of the subway complex under Columbus Circle in Manhattan; the structural elements of the rehabilitation and new construction; and the challenges associated with design and construction. PB is providing engineering services to New York City Transit (NYCT) for the rehabilitation of the 59th Street/Columbus Circle Station Complex that services over 150,000 customers daily. The project involves structural repairs, modifications and new construction requiring underpinning and temporary supports, custom framing details, and construction staging procedures to meet stringent limitations within the operating transit station and around the Columbus Circle street intersections.

While a sizable amount of data exist as to the activity and distribution of minor elements between matte and metal, there has been no unifying theory presented delineating the form of dissolution of these elements in molten sulfides. In order to alleviate that deficiency the literature concerning the behavior of As, Sb, Bi and Pb in mattes is reviewed. Models present in the literature, regarding the thermochemical behavior of minor elements, are tested, and new models are presented and evaluated using thermodynamic theory. The results of those analyses are used to predict optimum conditions for the volatilization of minor elements. The dearth of data on the behavior of minor elements in nickel mattes requires that this review focus on copper- iron mattes. An effort is made, however, to utilize basic knowledge regarding nickel sulfides and the interaction of nickel with the minor elements to predict the behavior of those elements in nickel-copper and nickel-iron mattes.

In recent years, economies of scale have continued to drive copper projects to larger throughputs to offset depleting lower grade resources. A decade ago there were only a small number of projects that stretched beyond 100,000 Mtpd throughput rates. Nowadays and moving forward virtually all the major copper projects are sized beyond this, with throughput rates up to 250,000 Mtpd now under evaluation for a number of key projects in Chile and Peru. This paper explores the development from the 160 m3 flotation cells, through to the 257 m3 cells and nowadays to the 660 m3 machines. The contributions of specific copper concentrators to this growth phase are reviewed herein. The historical basis of flotation machine scale-up is also briefly discussed. Metallurgical results as well as layout, maintenance and operational aspects are highlighted.

Mineralogical analysis of a nickeliferous laterite from the Rockhampton region shows that the nickel is largely associated with the manganese wad and opaline silica. The laterite also contains an appreciable chromite content (about 12 per cent Cr2O,) although this tends to be poorly liberated.Leaching with hydrochloric or sulphuric acid, at atmospheric pressure at the boiling point is non-selective with respect to iron dissolution.The degree of dissolution increases as the acid concentration and retention time are increased; cobalt dissolution requires less aggressive conditions than does the dissolution of an equivalent amount of nickel.Leaching with sulphuric acid at elevated temperatures and pressures leads to a minimum amount of iron dissolution, is rapid, and requires a reduced acid addition rate. Nickel and cobalt recovery from the clarified leachate would be simplified because of the leach selectivity.Pressure leaching appears to be the most practical route for treating the Rockhampton laterite. The economics of processing would be made more attractive by the recovery of a chromium concentrate from the leach residue. This would typically contain about 45 per cent Cr2O, and could be used as a source of chromium chemicals.

More than 30 wells ranging in depth from 300 to 12,000 feet are used for waste disposal into subsurface formations which include unconsolidated sand, sandstone, vugular limestone, and fractured gneiss.

When the writer first saw the square-set timbering, he was at once impressed with the fact that the frames made by the sets, along the lode and across it, were composed of panels with rectangular openings, and it was puzzling to understand howsuch a collapsible construction could resist pressure that came unevenly on it. Later he learnt that the sets did not satisfactorily resist such pressure, but mullock filling had, to a great extent, to undertake this duty for them. So it appeared that the setswere practically an expensive scaffolding, enabling the miners to work in the face and carry the stope forward, till the filling was put in behind them to take the pressure of the roof and sides of the excavation. Of course some of the pressure is takenby the sets, but this is because "the set timbers prevent the filling being done perfectly; if it were practicable to remove the sets before filling, the filling by itself would more effectively support the back and wall, than do the combined sets andmullock. On the whole, therefore, the sets can hardly be said to be of much benefit where pressure has to be resisted. Due to variation in the geological natures of underground coal mines, especially when the entry?s roof/floor are soft and weak, it is vital to select an appropriate roof bolting system to ensure entry stability, coal production, and miner?s safety. No single type of roof bolting system perfectly fits for various types of openings, even within a mine. From the results of continuous research on roof bolting in the past 10 years, the authors used a novel concept of ?Self-screwed? mechanism to develop five types of roof bolting under a patented Self-screwed Tube Bolting System (STBS)©. This roof tube bolting system can be applied to meet different timing-strength requirements under varying mining conditions to increases the stability of mine workings. This paper outlines the structures and mechanisms of the five types of self-screwed roof bolting systems along with their unique characteristics, advantages and disadvantages, and limitations. Two case studies using a Self-screwed Tube Drilling Bolting (STDB)©, one of the five types of roof tube bolting systems, show the principles of mechanics, suitability and parameters for a mine entry and a subway?s construction/ supports in the surrounding soil layers and soft sands, respectively are presented. The results confirmed the time dependent anchorage capacity between predictions and on-site measurements. Currently, other types of the self-screwed tube bolting systems are also being applied to different coal mines in China to increase entry stability and meet safety requirements.

Synthetic rock with predictable porosity and permeability has been Prepared from mixtures of sand, cement and water. Three series of mixes were investigated primarily for the relation between porosity and permeability for certain grain sizes and proportions. Synthetic rock prepared of 65 per cent large grains, 27 per cent small grains and 8 per cent Portland cement, gave measurable results ranging in porosity from 22.5 to 40 per cent and in permeability from 0.1 darcies to 6 darcies. This variation in porosity and permeability was caused by varying the amount of blending water. Drainage-cycle relative permeability characteristics of the synthetic rock were similar to those of natural reservoir rock. INTRODUCTION The fundamental behavior characteristics of fluids flowing through porous media have been described in the literature. Practical application of these flow characteristics to field conditions is too complicated except where assumptions are overly simplified. The use of dimensionally scaled models to simulate oil reservoirs has been described in the literature. 1-3 These and other papers have presented the theoretical and experimental justification for model design. Others have presented elements of model construction and their operation. In most investigations the porous media have consisted of either u ncon soli da ted sand, glass beads, broken glass or plastic-impregnated granular substances—materials in which the flow behavior is not identical to that in natural reservoir rock. The relative permeability curves for unconsoli-dated sands differ from those for consolidated sandstone. The effect of saturation history on relative permeability measurements is discussed by Geffen, et a1.4 Wyga15 has shown quite conclusively that a process of artificial cementation can be used to render un consolidated packs into synthetic sandstones having properties similar to those of natural rock. Many theoretical and experimental studies have been made in attempts to determine the structure and properties of unconsolidated sand, the most notable being by Naar and Wygal.6 Others have theorized and experimented with the fundamental characteristics of reservoir rocks. This study was conducted to determine if some general relationship could be established between the size of sand grains and the porosity and permeability in consolidated binary packs. This paper presents the results obtained by changing some of the factors which affect the porosity and permeability of synthetically prepared sandstone. In addition, drainage relative permeability curves are presented. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Mixtures of Portland cement with water and aggregate generally are designed to have certain characteristics, but essentially all are planned to be impervious to water or other liquids. Synthetic sandstone simulating oil reservoir rock, however, must be designed to have a given permeability (sometimes several darcies), a porosity which is primarily the effective porosity but quantitatively similar to natural rock, and other characteristics comparable to reservoir rock, such as wettability, pore geometry, tortuosity, etc. Unconsolidated ternary mixtures of spheres gave both a theoretically computed and an experimentally observed minimum porosity of about 25 per cent.7 By using a particle-distribution system, one-size particle packs had reproducible porosities in the reproducible range of 35 to 37 per cent.6 For model reservoir studies of the prototype system, a synthetic rock having a porosity of 25 per cent or less and a permeability of 2 darcies was required. The rock had to be uniform and competent enough to handle. Synthetic sandstone cores were prepared utilizing the technique developed by Wygal.5 Some slight variations in the procedure were incorporated. The sand was sieved through U. S. Standard sieves. The Niagara Tunnel Project (NTP) is a 10.4-km- (6.5- mile-) long, 14.4-m (47.5-ft) bored tunnel that will run under the city of Niagara Falls from the Upper Niagara River to the Sir Adam Beck power station. The completed project will enhance the capacity of the Sir Adam Beck power station by adding 500 m3 /sec (17,657 cu ft/sec) of water through the tunnel. The project uses the world?s largest hard-rock tunnel boring machine (TBM) at 14.4 m (47.5 ft) in diameter to excavate the tunnel. Features of the project include the use of a high performance (HP) main beam TBM, state-of-the-art ground support and tunnel logistics systems. A continuous conveyor is used for muck transport from the TBM to the disposal area In June 2004, the Ontario government announced that Ontario Power Generation (OPG) had been given approval to proceed with the third tunnel under the city of Niagara Falls ? the first two tunnels were constructed in the 1950s using drill-and-blast techniques. The third tunnel, appropriately named the Niagara Tunnel Project (NTP), consists of a 10.4-km- (6.5-mile-) long TBM-bored, concrete-lined tunnel with a finished diameter of 12.5 m (41.1 ft). In August 2005, OPG the selected of Strabag of Austria, one of the largest construction companies in Europe, as the contractor to build the NTP at a price of C$600 million. In September 2005, Strabag selected The Robbins Co. of Solon, OH to design, manufacture and deliver a new 14.4- m- (47.5-ft-) diameter high performance, state-of-the-art main beam hard rock TBM to be used in the excavation of the tunnel. To meet the aggressive construction schedule as requested by OPG/Strabag, the TBM needed to be sup-plied as ready-to-bore within a 12-month period after the contract was awarded to Robbins.

A special type of shotcrete is used to improve the performance of open-type TBM in difficult situations. The Hakamagoshi and Johana tunnels are expressway evacuation tunnels of 3.2 km and 5.1 km in length, respectively (total 9.1 km) that were excavated by one open-type TBM. The geological conditions at the sites were estimated to be good before excavation. However, 95% of the rock turned out to be two ranking orders worse than the estimated classes. Therefore, we used a special shotcrete for bad rock conditions, and succeeded in excavating the tunnel at an average rate of 270 m/month.

The Vale Ferro Carajßs S11D project in northern Brazil is based on the movement of unprecedented volumes of waste and ore for mobile in-pit crushing and conveying or ætrucklessÆ systems. In peak years, the system is intended to handle a combined 160 Mt of material.The planning and implementation of the first such system for Vale, in a remote greenfield site, utilising the services of a range of international study, design and supply partners has provided a unique set of technical and project delivery challenges. The lessons from these are of value to the industry as the trend to remote and high-volume operations continues.This paper describes the key features of the mining system and documents the challenges and mitigations for important technical, cultural and project delivery issues that have arisen. Pin Piles are small diameter high capacity drilled and grouted piles also called minipiles or micropiles. They are ideal for building foundations on sites with poor ground conditions, sensitive surroundings, restricted vertical clearance, or difficult access. They are also well suited to foundation underpinning, arresting ground movements, and increasing the capacity of existing foundations. The major factors for selection of Pin Piles are reviewed; drilling, grouting, and design fundamentals are summarized; and a major case history is presented for the underpinning of the 43 story elevator core at the recently opened Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, NV.

Two Rivers Platinum Mine (TRP) is a 55:45 joint venture between African Rainbow Minerals and Impala Platinum, respectively. TRP is situated on the farm Dwarsrivier 372KT, in the southern sector of the eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex. Dwarsrivier is underlain by rock formations of the Critical Zone (Winterveld norite-anorthosite) and the Main Zone (Winnarshoek norite- anorthosite). Two economically significant PGE-bearing layers namely the Merensky Reef and the UG2 chromitite are found within the upper Critical Zone. These are approximately 140 m vertically apart, separated by a series of barren norites and anorthosites. At Two Rivers Platinum, only the UG2 chromitite layer is currently being mined for PGEs. The UG2 sub-outcrops north/south along the Klein Dwarsrivier river valley with a very gentle dip to the west of 7º?10º. At Two Rivers the UG2 averages about 120 cm in thickness, overlain by a waste pyroxenite parting about 20 cm thick, above which is a leader seam about 20 cm in thickness. The mineable cut consists of the leader seam, the waste pyroxenite parting, the UG2 chromitite layer including 25 cm of pegmatoidal pyroxenite footwall, below the UG2 reef to a minimum of 185 cm trackless mining cut. The mining method is a mechanized bord and pillar layout, which will yield a total of 185 000 tons at full run of mine production from the underground UG2 mine.

Of the 15 selected non fuel mineral commodities detailed in table 12, only 3 indicated increases in worldwide consumption in 1992. As in 1991, decline in consumption levels of the selected commodities can be attributed to reduced levels of use in the former U.S.S.R. and Eastern Europe. Of the remaining 12 commodities, 2 magnesium and cadmium, stayed relatively the same, while the other 10, including iron and steel, all recorded decreases. Global consumption of iron ore is estimated to have fallen about 3.5 % or about 30 million tons. This is a greater decline than what was estimated for production of iron ore, which is down only 2.7% or nearly 26.5 million tons, suggesting an addition to stocks. The consumption trend for iron and steel has been declining since 1989. This has mainly been due to the continued drops in use in the former U.S.S.R. and Eastern Europe. Even as the European economy begins to turn upward, there may only be a slight increase in consumption of iron, steel, and cement, considering the high cost of construction needed to modernize factories and buildings in Eastern Europe. Many feel that the economies of these countries are limited by the current status of their industries.
