New methods of analysing and modelling flotation circuits have been developed as part of the AMIRA P9 mineral processing research project. A study using these techniques was conducted on the Olympic Dam copper flotation circuit to provide the following outcomes: an estimate of the flotation cell hydrodynamic properties and froth performance characteristics, and identification of potential areas for improvement; an estimate of the feed floatability parameters for basic model development; and identification of potential flotation circuit improvement opportunities. A flotation circuit model of the Olympic Dam copper concentrator was developed using the data collected from mass balanced site surveys, along with hydrodynamic data, froth performance data and numerous laboratory batch flotation tests. The simulator that has been developed from the model has the ability to estimate the influence of selected changes (such as circuit changes) on flotation circuit performance. Several stream destination simulations were conducted to provide guidance for further testwork and possible circuit improvements. The results from these simulations are presented.

The breakage and flow characteristics of quartz, ground as a minor constituent with calcite in a continuous wet ball mill, have been determined by carefully controlled grinding tests.A mathematical model, combining the simple functions which describe these characteristics, has been used to predict both steady state and non steady state results.The calculated results are compared with experimental data.

Two recent cases in Canada and the United Kingdom concerning environmental offences under similar legislation illustrate the risks well.

"The McArthur River uranium deposit is the single richest uranium ore body developed in the world to date. The ore body’s average grade is 15% U3O8. Proven reserves are in excess of 450 million pounds. The grinding circuit is located underground. The ground ore is pumped to a surface facility where the slurry is thickened and loaded into containers for shipping to the Key Lake mill 78 kilometers to the south.The paper will briefly describe the mining method employed. The underground ore handling and grinding circuit, and surface facilities including slurry load out, wastewater treatment and the freeze plant will be described in detail. The paper will emphasize radiation and safety procedures that are followed to minimize operator exposure to radiation risks.LOCATIONThe McArthur River mine is located 78 kilometres north of the Key Lake mill. It is located at latitude 57’ N in northern Saskatchewan, within the southern boundary of the Athabasca formation. The nearest town is Pinehouse, located 320 kilometres to the south. Access to the mine is by an all weather road and by a private airstrip.HISTORYThe McArthur River Operation is jointly owned by Cameco Corporation (69.805%) and Cogema Resources Inc. (30.195%). Exploration for uranium in the McArthur River area started in 1980 by the Saskatchewan Mining Development Corporation, a predecessor company of Cameco.In 1984, a 12-kilometre long basement conductor was identified at a depth exceeding 500 metres. Systematic exploration drilling of this conductor resulted in the discovery of the P2 North deposit. Subsequent surface drilling programs from 1989 to 1992 delineated a narrow ore zone over a strike length of 1700 meters at a depth of 500 to 600 metres. At this time, geological reserves for the deposit were estimated to be 2.4 million tonnes at a grade of 5.0% U3O8 for a uranium content of 260 million pounds U308"

In this paper, four cyanide-utilising bacteria strains were isolated from a gold mine tailings pond, in the Hexi gold mine (Shandong), China. Based on the analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequence, four strains were identified as Aeromonas hydrophila strain C1, Bacillus mojavensis strain C3, Shewanella oneidensis strain C2, and Aeromonas media strain C4. Based on the cyanide detoxification efficiencies results of the four strains, Bacillus mojavensis C3 had the highest detoxification rate and was selected to assess its efficiency to detoxify cyanide in gold mine tailings at different pH (9.5, 10.5, and 11.6) using cyanide as the sole carbon and nitrogen sources. Strain C3 was capable of detoxifying 46.5mg/L of cyanide-containing gold mine tailings at all tested pH ranges at 30oC, 196 rpm after 15 d. The amounts of cyanide detoxified were 87.5%, 84.1%, and 73.5% at initial pH 9.5, 10.5, and 11.6, respectively. The highest cyanide detoxification was observed at pH 9.5. The viable cells growths in the samples were 5.7E+09CFU/mL, 4.9E+09CFU/mL, and 2.7E+09CFU/mL at pH 9.5, 10.5, and 11.6, respectively. Free ammonia concentrations were observed as a byproduct of the biodetoxification process. The residual ammonia concentration in the sample was observed at 0.35 mg/L, 0.33 mg/L, and 0.62 mg/L at pH 9.5, 10.5, and 11.6, respectively. The highest residual ammonia concentration was noticed at pH 11.6. The amount of cyanide removed by mixed culture strains C3 and C4 was 94.6% and showed a residual free ammonia concentration of 2.6mg/L, as biodetoxification byproduct after 120 h. The pure culture Bacillus mojavensis strain C3 and its mixed culture strains exhibited higher potential to detoxify cyanide-containing gold mine tailings at alkaline pH values and could be cultivated to detoxify gold mine effluents at large-scale. The paper describes the search for mineral deposits in an area of 4,500 sq. miles of south-west Tasmania. The area is one of difficult access and the problem of speedy movement and maintenance of field parties was solved by the use of helicopters. The programme has followed a systematic pattern of the aerial photography of the exploration area with the preparation of photQmosaics and topographical base sheets from these mosaics. Geological maps were initially prepared by photogeological interpretation and making use where possible of pre-existing information. The maps produced were later checked by ground traverses. Geophysical maps were obtained by the use of airborne magnetic, electromagnetic and radiometric methods. Geophysical and geological anomalies were checked on the ground by a campaign using ground geophysical equipment in the former case and geological and geochemical work in both instances. Audio Frequency Magnetic and Induced Polarization techniques were used in an area which was covered by several hundred feet of Tertiary sediments.The campaign has reached the stage of the drilling of specific targets.INTRODUCTIONThis paper describes the activities of Lyell-E.Z. Explorations (L.E.E.), an organization which was formed in 1956 by the Mt. Lyell Mining and Railway Co. Ltd. and the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd. to explore for mineral deposits in an area of approximately 4,500 sq. miles in southwest and southern Tasmania. To provide the necessary personnel and equipment for this project the exploration resources of both Companies were pooled and augmented and a headquarters was established in Queenstown. The work was directed by a Committee of four made up of officials from both Companies; a review of this structure has recently been presented by Hall (1959).

The Umiray Angat 13,2 km long tunnel in Philippines have been bored through extremely variable and difficult ground conditions including a number of special events. In particular the following adverse conditions were found: faults in decomposed ground, high temperature rocks, extremely rapid and important convergence phenomena, water inflows up to 800 litres per second. The special El Nino climatic conditions caused a long dry season and lower the level of the lake that was granting the access by barge to the site under the minimum navigable level. Many equipment have had therefore to be transported to site by a 10 ton capacity helicopter, after having been partially dismounted. For the same reason most of the tunnel drive have been bored servicing the site by 1 ton capacity helicopters to transport materials, spares and personnel. In order to overcome the above geological and logistic problems several innovation were introduced and tested in this project. Despite all that difficulties the 13,2 km of tunnel were bored in about 24 months, with a global average of 500 m/month.

"The transportation of mineral solids in the form of slurry is a subject most of us are associated with and, in fact, live with on a daily basis. The design parameters of slurry systems and most important the prime movers or cent¬rifugal pumps, are frequent and often controversial subjects due to the lack of practical guidelines which, if known and followed, can increase both reli¬ability and service life of the equipment.In this talk, emphasis has been placed on the practical side or rule-of-thumb approach to applications which, in turn, has been related to successful field results. A prototype weightometer soft sensor is under development at DebTech, De Beers in partnership with Venetia Mine. Its main function consists of an online data source; data validation; dynamic weightometer models; online detection of weightometer failure; alarming and replacing a weightometer when it fails. 31 dynamic models have been developed. All models with R2>= 85%are accepted as good models and they generally have satisfactory results with a daily error of less than 8% within 90% confidence level. By using those models, a set of soft sensors can be set up to cover all weightometers in the entire processes starting from primary crushing to the stock piles of dense medium separation (DMS). Some practical issues and concerns on model development are discussed, including data collection, data analysis, data pre-processing, variable selection, time delay, model training and model validation. When deploying the weightometer soft sensor system, the potential benefits could include: reduction in plant downtime; reduction in unplanned maintenance and even replacement of non-critical weightometers, particularly where nuclear weightometers are used. The U.S. Bureau of Mimes evaluated the effects of two iron-based fuel additives on diesel particulate matter (DPM) emissions. The 5.6-L, six-cylinder test engine is typical of engines used in underground mines. One additive, ferrous picrate, did not measurably affect exhaust emissions. This report is mainly about a ferrocene-based additive that reduced DPM between 4 and 45 pct, depending on engine operating conditions. The report concludes that the DPM reductions were caused by the catalytic oxidation properties of a ferric oxide coating that developed inside the engine's combustion chamber. The ferric oxide coating also decreased gas-phase hydrocarbons and O, but it increased CO, and NO,. The increase in NO,, of about 12 pct, is considered the only adverse effect of the ferrocene-based fuel additive. The results suggest that the effectiveness of ferrocene was partially offset by increased sulfates because of the high-sulfur fuel used. Recommendations for continuing fuel additive research are presented.

In the 1953 National First-Aid and Mine Rescue Contest, 58 teams from 9 States participated, 14 teams from 6 States in mine rescue and 47 teams from 9 States in first aid. Three of the teams were combination teams in that the same team participated in both the mine rescue and first-aid contests. The States represented and the number of teams from each State are shown in table 1. [ ] The contest was conducted in accordance with the general rules prepared by the Rules Committee and approved by the General Committee of the National First-Aid and Mine Rescue Committee.

Estimation of the axial side shear resistance of drilled shaft rock sockets is directly related to the unconfined compressive strength of the bedrock. Commonly, the mean unconfined compressive strength value is calculated from a range of laboratory test results and is used to estimate the side shear of the bedrock. This paper presents the results from a full scale axial load test performed on an 8.5-feet-diameter drilled shaft rock socket, and compares measured side shear values to estimated values for two different rock strata. Measured side shear values correlated well with the design value calculated for the "strong" rock stratum, but did not correlate well with the design value calculated for the "weak" rock stratum. The mean unconfined compressive strength was used to calculate the side shear in both strata, but review of the laboratory data indicates that this value may not have been appropriate for the weak stratum due to a large variation in the laboratory test results. Also included in this paper is a discussion of the subsurface conditions, the laboratory test results, and the methodology used to design the drilled shaft rock sockets for axial and lateral resistance.

"Quantitative information about the quality of metal balance results is often overlooked when making important plant production planning decisions. Not only is this common omission made in a context where many measurements taken in and around mineral processing plants carry significant errors, but it also conflicts with the AMIRA P754 Code of Practice for Metal Accounting. The fact that metal balances are typically published without any indication of data quality may give the wrong impression that the measurements are unquestionably accurate. While it is true that statistical data reconciliation can improve the confidence intervals of redundant variables, there is no data processing technique that brings them down to zero at a finite cost. In this paper, we review the entire data flow, starting from field instruments to metal accounting-based decision-making to show how measurement errors are transmuted into business risks associated with production planning. Necessary conditions for first exposing then quantifying such business risks are stated. Pitfalls to be avoided are also discussed. Finally, a simplified risk assessment and management procedure which considers the quality of metal balance results are applied to a polymetallic mineral processing plant. INTRODUCTION Each and every mineral processing plant has production reporting obligations. In this paper, we are concerned with metal accounting reports (Morrison, 2008) where saleable metal flows and inventories are estimated and published. These metal accounting reports are delivered to a variety of stakeholders who use them for internal management purposes (day-to-day plant production planning, plant operation optimisation, capital spending, etc.) as well as for external management (royalty settlements, tolling agreements, etc.). Hence, there should be no doubt that spotless metal accounting is instrumental to high-quality corporate governance (Gaylard et al., 2014) of mining and metallurgical companies. To this extent, one would have expected industry-endorsed standards to have emerged a long time ago. However, the lack of an accepted set of standard procedures for metallurgical accounting was explicitly recognized as an industry-wide problem only in August 2001 during an SAIMM workshop held in Cape Town, South Africa. Discussions that followed this workshop led to the initiation of the AMIRA Project P754, “Metal Accounting and Reconciliation”, in 2003."

"The location of Quintette Coal Limited's pit and geologic nature of the dedicated reserves combine to introduce a number of factors which can adversely affect waste dump stability. These factors include steep terrain, variable material type and particle size, and precipitation. This paper describes the solutions to related waste dump problems. A brief geotechnical review of the waste dumps is given and Quintette's operational strategies during periods of dump stability and instability are discussed. Despite best efforts, failures occasionally occur and discussion is included on Quintette's success at bringing failed dumps safely back into use. IntroductionQuintette Coal Limited (QCL) property is situated on the east slope of the Rocky Mountains near Tumbler Ridge, approximately 120 km southwest of Dawson Creek, British Columbia. This surface mine is located on mountainous terrain and is subject to climatic extremes of wind, precipitation and temperature.QCL has a current annual production of 4.75 million tonnes of metallurgical coal with a stripping ratio of 7: 1. This correctly implies the extraction of over 33 million bank cubic metres (BCM) of waste which is placed on numerous waste dumps at various locations adjacent to the pit.There are three active pits - Mesa, Wolverine, and Shikano (Fig. 1). Shikano is a newly developed pit located near the plant site. It is not subject to the unique dump management problems prevalent at the Mesa and Wolverine pits, therefore the Shikano waste dumps will not be discussed . The dumps for the Mesa and Wolverine pits, however, have been technically and operationally challenging since shortly after mining began in 1983. Their characteristics, associated site specifics and management, therefore, are the subject of this paper.Waste dump locations for the Mesa and Wolverine pits are shown in Figures 2 and 3 as is the relative waste distribution . Each sub-pit is connected to a principal waste dump in reasonable proximity and to an alternate dump should disposal of waste be necessary at that location. The waste dumps are constructed from the top elevations initially to coincide with subpit development. In the initial years (1-7) waste dump heights will be up to 250 m, then, as the mine matures (8-20 years), waste dump maximum heights will continuously decrease to coincide with lower bench elevations"

More than 70 km of main line and service tunnels have been excavated to date for crossing the Apennines between Bologna and Florence. A new design and construction approach, known as Analysis of the Controlled Deformation in Rock and Soils, (ADECO-RS), was adopted to tackle the extreme heterogeneity of the ground and the particular stress-strain conditions. The goal of this system is to obtain constant and predictable full section advance rates, even in very poor geology, with the highest possible level of safety and reliability. The execution of this gigantic project required the mobilization of 21 job-sites, with the concurrent operation of 30 excavation headings. The global production rates confirm the high quality of the design and the high level of industrialization reached during the construction stage, levels not previously obtained in similar conditions, using other approaches such as NATM.

Several candidate sites have been proposed for the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL), a facility that would provide over 2000 meters of overburden to screen out cosmic rays that would otherwise interfere with experiments. Types of anticipated experiments include: detection of dark matter and stellar neutrinos, and evaluation of deep microbial life forms. Engineering experiments might include more refined scanning devices to “see” rock defects ahead of tunneling, improved predictive models for groundwater inflows and tunnel support requirements, and improved instrumentation for monitoring in-situ stresses, rock deformations, and pore water pressures. Spin-offs from this research might include more sensitive security detectors for scrutinizing shipping containers, new drugs based on new microbes, and improved sensor systems for tunneling. A site near Leavenworth, WA, was assessed and shown to have numerous topographic and geotechnical advantages. Rock cover is on the order of 2250 meters. The granitic bedrock is suitable for tunneling a variety of large underground openings.

Criteria have been fully developed for determining the optimum size of oil and gas well blocks. The criteria lead to the formation of well barrier pillars which are, of themselves, inherently stable and take account of variable mine roof and floor conditions. The criteria ensure, through considerations of ground movement, that strains transmitted to well casings, are within tolerable limits of casing specifications. The criteria cater for well barrier pillars in multi-seam mining situations and where previous old mining has taken place. The criteria maintain flexibility in being adaptable to local mine design situations. The criteria are applicable to proposed extraction thicknesses up to 15 feet at depths up to 2,400 feet. The criteria are related to producing wells and to abandoned wells. In the latter connection, various states of well abandonment are recognised.
