This report presents a design and cost investigation for several alternative versions of a field-worthy mining machine-mounted respirable dust monitor. Three main design variations are considered: (a) light scattering sensing, (b) Beta-filter tape sensing, and (c) a combination of the two preceeding methods. Eventual instrument production coats as a function of design complexity are tabulated. Cost estimates for the development and field testing of field-worthy prototypes are also presented. A general discussion on the technical aspects of these design alternatives is included following a modular-hierarchical approach of progressive complexity. The technical background to this report has been provided by the experience and results derived from the work performed under U.S. Bureau of Mines Contracts Nos. H0166097 and H0377092.

The Eve Mills deposit is in Monroe County, Tenn., near the southeastern corner of the State. The deposit was examined in February 1943 by a Bureau of Mines engineer, and drilling the property was recommended to increase the on: reserves enough to justify mining should war needs require it. The deposits were explored, by 32 diamond-drill holes totaling 11,649 feet during the periods from July 1943 to November 7, 1945, and from April 1944 to August 17, 1944. The drilling campaign disclosed a large area of mineralization. The ore, however, is apparently confined to long, narrow sheets. The indicated grade of the ore bodies blocked cut by the Bureau of Mines is 4.o8 percent zinc and 2.10 percent iron.

A three-dimensional finite element analysis was performed of an instrumented section of a double-entry coal mine in order to provide a comparison between field measurements and existing analytic techniques. The BMINES computer code was used to perform the analysis. The sequence of excavation of the entries was considered, as well as the installation of rock bolts and cribbing during the mining cycle. The materials In the region under investigation were idealized into four rock types and coal. The rocks were assumed to be isotropically elastic, perfectly plastic. Coal was represented by an elastically anisotropic (transverse isotropy) and plastically isotropic model. A fracture yield criterion of the Coulomb form was used for all materials. The strength and stiffness of all materials were substantially reduced from available laboratory data to account for in-situ properties. Qualitative trends and stress distributions obtained from the calculation were found to be reasonable. However, computed displacements and closures were greatly exaggerated and an excessive degree of inelastic deformation was indicated in the coal, especially adjacent to the excavated faces. It was established that both these effects were the result of an excessive reduction in the strength and stiffness of the materials. The analysis underscores the need for three-dimensional calculations by identifying a number of important structural response parameters that would be either outside the scope of, or misrepresented by, two-dimensional analyses. The analysis also emphasizes the need for comprehensive and accurate measurement of material properties in order fully to exploit the power of the analytical techniques to generate reliable predictions.

A mineral survey of a 5,700-acre portion of the 11,510-acre Upper Deep Creek Wilderness Study Area (ID-111-44B) in southwestern Idaho was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1985. No mining claims have been located, no minerals have been produced, and no resources have been identified in the study area. Three reconnaissance samples of alluvium from the Deep Creek drainage contained $0.21, $0.22, and $2.72 per cubic yard in placer gold, higher than usual for the Owyhee River canyonland area. The samples of near-surface material contained very fine gold in values too low to support large-volume commercial placer operations, but the quantity and size of the particles of gold in the alluvium is expected to increase near bedrock. Consequently, the area may be a target for recreational as well as small commercial suction dredge operations. The physical characteristics of the individual pieces of gold (bright and angular) indicate that it may have recently come from an unidentified nearby source.

Nickel laterite pressure acid leach plants and reduction roast plants have had a checkered history in their engineering, construction, startup and operational reliability. Many potential projects have been the subject of detailed studies over the last thirty to forty years but relatively few have advanced to commercial production. Four reduction roast plants are currently operating, an additional one was partially constructed but never completed, and another was started up in 1974 and shut down after 12 years operation. Three acid leach plants have been built and commissioned in the last five years, trying to follow the example of the Moa Nickel plant in Cuba. An additional acid leach plant project is currently on hold, following limited construction work, its future subject to review by the owner because of potential cost over-runs. This paper attempts to discuss difficulties that may be encountered as a project is developed and will address factors which may affect production ramp-up schedule, long term production performance and overall production success. Comparisons are made with ramp-up performance at other large metallurgical plants that employ some comparable unit operations. This paper describes the location and general features of iron occurrences in Colorado. Most of the deposits were examined; many are in forested and mountainous areas at altitudes of 5,000 to 13,700 feet. Iron is known to occur in 30 counties of western Colorado. Transporting the ore to market is a handicapping economic factor involving long truck and railroad hauls; the nearest purchaser of smelting ores is the Colorado Fuel and Iron Corp., at Pueblo, Colo. When the ore can be sold locally for special purposes and at higher prices than can be obtained at iron smelters, small-scale operations can supply that market.

In a continental environment, sediment mobilisation, dispersion and deposition are mainly controlled by mass gravity and streamflow processes. Alluvial sedimentary systems have an important economic value because of their capacity to host mineral resources. In the Hamersley Province, alluvial iron deposits (including the well-known detrital iron deposits and channel iron deposits) play an increasing role on the commodity market. Alluvial deposits exploration is challenging and generally involves geomorphologic and stratigraphic field studies, as well as expensive exploratory surface sampling and drilling. We applied a new surface processes modelling technique to investigate iron rich material, ie the erosion product of bedded iron formations -dispersion in the Hamersley Province. LECODE is a 3D-parallel surface processes forward modelling code designed to compute surface flow and solve erosion, transport and sedimentation on the geological time scale. The code offers new quantitative ways to better understand how sedimentary deposits develop in intra-continental and channel environments. Here we show that our integrated forward model is capable of opening a window to the construction of sedimentary architectures, including facies distribution, deposit thickness and development of heterogeneities such as mineral traps over the modelled domain. The model results represent 1 Ma of surface evolution and are validated through comparison to published paleovalleys map and known occurrences of iron ore deposits. This numerical modelling approach allows for the first time to track alluvial materials from source to sink through time, test existing geological models and faithfully reproduce the first order distribution of alluvial iron deposits in an area of interest. This work strongly suggests the presence of iron rich alluvial deposits reserves under cover, in unexplored detrital fans in the Fortescue Valley. This method, potentially coupled with sediment geochemistry and basin analyses studies, has the potential to maximise alluvial iron deposits exploration success, while reducing exploration cost and associated environmental impact.CITATION:Duclaux, G, Salles, T and Ramanaidou, E R, 2013. This paper describes the methods of mining and washing brown iron are in 1957 at the Sawyer mine, leased by Wayne County Mining Co., and the Fore mine, leased by Four Mining Co., both in southern Missouri; it is one of a series prepared by the Federal Bureau of Mines on mining and milling methods and costs in various districts of the United States. The Sawyer mine is in Wayne County, about 10 miles north-northeast of Williamsville (fig. 1); the Fore mine is in Howell County, about 20 miles southwest of West Plains (fig. 2). Both are open-pit mines from which the crude are was upgraded by washing and hand-sorting to produce are of grade and quality suitable for sale to operators of iron and steel furnaces. The operations described are typical of many others that produce or have produced marketable brown iron are from small sedimentary deposits, several hundred of which outcrop on the crests or hill sides of southern Missouri (fig. 3). The 1957 production of marketable brown iron are by 40 separate operations in the southern part of the State was 281,427 wet long tons, valued at $1,637,243. Production from the Sawyer mine that year was 17,000 dry long tons of washed are, and from the Fore mine, 20,816 dry long tons.

Because mine haul trucks consume considerable quantities of fuel, they are ideal candidates for the adoption of cleaner and cheaper fuels like natural gas. Impressive fuel cost savings will be realized in regions where liquefied natural gas (LNG) has cost advantage to diesel fuel, while also providing significant reductions of air contaminants and greenhouse gases. High Pressure Direct Injection (HPDI) of natural gas utilizes the diesel cycle combustion process and therefore retains the diesel engine?s high performance and efficiency characteristics. HPDI has been demonstrated in on-road Class 8 trucks since 2001 accumulating almost 10 million kilometres to date. The supply of LNG fuel will be an essential parallel aspect in the introduction of HPDI to mining. LNG can be transported to site as diesel is today, or may be produced on or near mine operations that have access to methane sources or pipelines.

The title of “the world’s biggest volume-produced hydraulic breaker,” that was held for more than a decade by the Atlas HB 7,000, changed hands with the launch of Atlas Copco’s HB 10,000 at bauma 2007. A service weight of 10 t (11 st) and up to 50 percent higher productivity represent major steps toward a new market segment: the use of hydraulic breakers as cost-efficient production machines for primary breaking and as a true alternative to drilling and blasting. The HB 10,000 has all the technical features developed by Atlas Copco for its hydraulic breakers and includes: StartSelect — the breaker’s start-up and shut-down behavior can be adapted to the conditions. AutoControl that ensures an optimized balance of impact energy and impact frequency to maximize percussive performance. Auto-Control also reduces blank firing force and controls energy recovery. PowerAdapt — if oil pressure is too high, the breaker shuts down automatically. This prevents downtime and is particularly useful when breakers are used on different carriers. DustProtector II — a combination of multiple strippers prevents abrasive rock dust and foreign bodies from penetrating the lower breaker section. Conti- Lube II — the automatic lubrication unit guarantees optimal lubrication of the breaker at all times.

"SummaryBritish Petroleum plc is developing a new gold recovery process known as coal gold agglomeration (CGA) for the recovery of gold from its ores. Liberated gold grains are recovered with high efficiency by adhering to agglomerates of coal and oil. The process is simple, can recover gold grains down to very fine sizes, avoids the large scale use of cyanide and provides the industry with an important new process option.A technical appraisal of the process has been performed on an extensive range of gold bearing materials. Ore types have been identified from which high gold recoveries can be achieved. A spreadsheet based computer program has been used to estimate the preliminary capital and operating costs of the process. Comparison with established gold production costs shows that the process costs of CGA, on the appropriate ore types, are potentially very attractive, which will enable economic treatment of lower grade ores than is currently possible using conventional cyanidation. Treatment of known placer deposits or gravity concentration plant tailings may be the most rapid means of demonstrating the process at a commercial scale prior to more widespread applications.1. INTRODUCTIONWestern world gold production for the 1980s has shown rapid growth sustained by a demand for gold at a favourable price (Fig. 1). Heap leaching and CIP/CIL operations have been responsible for the major part of new production during the 1970s and 1980s with present overall production costs averaging US$200/oz in Canada, USA and Australia and US$265/oz in South Africa [l]. A great deal of research and process development effort in the 1980s has been towards the treatment of refractory ores. Operating costs for the economic processing of these ore types by currently available routes are around US$300/oz [2]."

A 6-ft. diameter laboratory tunnel, raise and shaft boring machine was designed and constructed to carry out research investigations to enhance the performance of mechanical rock excavation equipment. The machine is operated with a computer control system and features extensive instrumentation to monitor and record various test parameters, including tri-axial cutter forces, machine thrust, torque, rpm and penetration rate. An extensive laboratory testing Program has been conducted using this machine, demonstrating the feasibility of attaining high rates of penetration in various sedimentary geologies. Also, a large data base has been developed to serve as a basis for the improved design and performance of tunnel, raise and shaft boring equipment.

"Foundation for tracks of coke transfer car and dust extraction pipe was designed as series of isolated foundations spaced at 11.0m along length of coke oven battery resting on soil at depth of 2.5m. In one region the foundations are close to adjacent 12m deep underground junction house. Five foundations in this zone were constructed on backfilled soil without proper compaction instead of engineering soil fill or concrete fill. The foundations settled under loads and the supported frame structure tilted after equipment erection and during trials endangering the safety of the structure and equipment operation. The distorted structure had to be rectified in-situ by arresting settlement. In order to stabilize the foundation and supported structure the supporting soil had to be strengthened in situ without any dismantling, reconstruction and adverse effect to equipment operation. This paper presents the case study on the evaluation of defects for the foundation failure and analysis of the problem, proposed rectification of the situation by appropriate soil stabilization scheme, monitoring of the stabilization operations and verification of effectiveness of the rectification work by measurement of settlements. The implemented solution has ensured safety of the structure and equipment without any adverse impact on normal operation.INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUNDNew Coke Oven Battery was being installed for an integrated Steel Plant. The hot coke from oven is pushed out after completion of coking process through a coke transfer car onto a hot coke receiving car. The coke transfer car runs on rail track parallel to the line of ovens forming the coke oven battery. One rail is supported on the structure of the operating platform of the battery and the second rail rests on independent structure of track beams. A large diameter pipe for extraction of the dust emitted during coke pushing operation is also supported on the same structure that supports the track beams. The entire structure rests on columns spaced at approximately 11.0m along the length of the battery. The columns transfer load to ground through individual foundations resting on competent subsoil strata.Two sets of foundations for the rail track beam support and dust extraction pipe support are adjacent to deep underground junction house of coke carrying conveyor. The depth of the pit for the junction house is 12m. The layout and arrangement of the foundations in this region around the junction house (JH-1) is shown in the “Figs. 1a, 1b”."

In North-West Nelson the Riwaka Complex, a linear basic intrusive complex, is exposed for approximately 45 km. Some 500 km south, across the Alpine Fault, a linear zone of similar but less well known basic intrusives that may be correlatives of the Riwaka Complex is exposed discontinuously for about 80 km. The Complex was emplaced at several centres along a major tensional fracture zone that developed in upper Carboniferous to Lower Permian time. This fracture zone probably formed in response to the development of a west dipping subduction zone that gave rise to the Permian volcanic arcs in east Nelson and western Southland. The Riwaka Complex contains three rock suites. The Fractionation Suite, characterized by cyclic mineral layering and small scale cumulus banding is the largest and is divided into the Ultramafic, Hornblende and Plagioclase Series, each of which is subdivided into several units. The Cumulus Gabbros represent a restricted but important suite of unusual composition, while the third suite is the late phase Diorite Suite. Except in the lower units of the Ultramafic Series sulfide mineralisation is widespread. Pyrrhotite is the dominant sulfide with lesser chalcopyrite pentlandite and pyrite. Four significant zones of sulfide accumulation are recognised and discussed in some detail. Evidence suggests that the primary magma from which the Riwaka Complex was derived was sulfur deficient. It is concluded that the sulfur content of the Riwaka Complex was derived from assimilation of sulfur rich wall rocks during intrusive processes.

At first I read this paper with interest, which grew to fascination, and ended up with horror. Such reactions to a supposedly scientific contribution are rare, and I believe the coal mining community must be warned in the strongest possible terms against the recommendations that this paper makes. The paper purports to have assessed statistically two sets of data on methane concentrations recorded in the return air from Turkish longwalls. The first set of data, from their Table I, is reproduced in Table I below. The data have been rearranged in classes to indicate the underlying distribution. While there is only limited data (N=33), the distribution looks as if it could be the sum of two normal distributions with means around 0.5 and 0.8, or possibly a log-normal distribution. What is quite clear is that it is nota single normal distribution.

The course has been broadened in scope, revised, and brought up to date and is being published as a similar series of seven miners' circulars (Nos. 51-57, revised) on accident prevention in metal and non-metallic mines. These circulars are as follows: Injury Statistics (Miners' Circular 51), dealing with general statistics on injuries from accidents at metal and nonmetallic mines, including causes, costs, and the use of investigations and reports of all injuries.

Dense medium separation (DMS) is critical to the operation of coal and diamond beneficiation plants. It is also utilised in iron ore, manganese, chromite and andalusite beneficiation as well as pre-concentration for platinum-bearing UG2 ore. Gravity concentration plays an important role in the processing of diamonds, coal, gold, platinum, titanium minerals, zircon, chromite, iron ore and manganese. The DMS and Gravity Concentration operations and technology in South Africa conference will focus on the operation of DMS and Gravity Concentration circuits in the South African Mining Industry. The current status of the technologies and equipment employed will be presented as well as future developments. The conference was set up to showcase South African DMS and Gravity Concentration operations and provide a forum where operators, technology and equipment suppliers can engage in knowledge sharing. The papers cover a wide spectrum of topics, including descriptions of operations, optimisation projects, new capital projects, equipment applications, process monitoring and process selection. Most commodities and unit processes associated with DMS and Gravity Concentration are covered. The conference venue was selected to be the CSIR Convention Centre in Pretoria. The CSIR has contributed to DMS research in South Africa and it is located not far from many coal, diamond, gold, platinum and chrome mines that extensively utilise DMS and Gravity Concentration in their beneficiation plants. I believe that the papers and presentations submitted for this conference will provide a valuable future reference for DMS and Gravity Concentration, thus making the work of all the contributors to this conference highly rewarding and worthwhile.

The Kazakhmys zinc refinery in Balkhash, Kazakhstan, which employs the Dynatec Zinc Pressure Leach Process, officially launched autoclave operations on December 27, 2003. The Kazakhmys plant is the world's first greenfields zinc refinery based on Dynatec's two-stage pressure leach technology. Production of zinc was realized on February 9, 2004, when the first cathode was stripped. Currently the plant start-up is ongoing, with progression to two-stage zinc pressure leach operation and ramp-up to full design capacity continuing through 2004.
