T 0 effectively evaluate property damage that is claimed to have been caused by blasting activities and in order to lay the proper foundation to build the best legal defense, identification of the actual causation for the damages are necessary. For the past twenty years, engineering personnel from VCE, Inc. (previously Vibration Control Engineering, Inc.) have been evaluating claimed blasting damages with pre- and postblast inspections, with analysis of seismic levels, blasting amounts at given distances, and with other engineering considerations. In addition to these evaluations, they have also documented other causes for damages which are of the types that are often claimed as blasting damage.

The alteration formed by the reaction of ore-bearing fluid and wall rock is often used as an important prospecting indicator, resulting in the dilution or enrichment of metals or related trace elements. A variety of rock-forming and metallogenic elements have been analyzed in regional stream sediments so that the relationship between the ore-bearing altered rock and the change in the geochemical elemental content can be obtained. Therefore, by using appropriate models, such as matched filtering, the abundance of the distribution of wall rock alteration, similar to the discovered deposits, can be modeled by using the distribution of geochemical elements in the region, and the areas with high distribution abundances are usually favorable prospecting targets. The alteration types related to gold mineralization in the Baiyun gold deposit are potassium feldspar alteration, silicification, pyritization, sericitization, and chloritization. In this paper, the geochemical data of the Qingchengzi ore field (1:200,000 and 1:50,000) have been used to form geochemical images through rasterization. In the three sections of the Baiyun gold deposit, binary-coded curves have been formed, revealing the differences in geochemical elements in stream sediments between altered rocks and the rocks surrounding the Baiyun gold mine. Among them, Au, W, and Mo are enriched elements, while Sn, Zn, and Hg are depleted elements. Several gold deposits are found in the predicted altered rock area by using the matched filtering method during fieldwork, which shows the effectiveness of the method.

Drill trajectory deviation is a recurring problem in the Mining Industry retreat stoping operations. As a result of this deviation, it is quite concevable that 60 kg (165 mm 0) and 103 kg (203 mm 0) explosive charges are detonated beyond the hanging wall contact. Consequently, there follows a reduction in hanging wall stability and an increase in ore dilution.

La actividad minera debe ser enfocada como una cadena de valor que tiene diferentes procesos alineados con la estrategia y los objetivos de la empresa. Dichas definiciones van a reflejar la manera cómo la empresa decide relacionarse con su entorno: accionistas, clientes, proveedores, trabajadores, estado, comunidad. Los procesos se traducen a nivel de secuencias de actividades y de ejecución de estas definiciones.

The Scanning Electron Microscope – Mineral Liberation Analyzer (SEM-MLA) laboratory, as part of the Core Research Equipment and Instrument Training (CREAIT) network of laboratories at Memorial University, NL, Canada, has recently published efforts towards increasing the throughput of automated mineralogy systems by producing single-step trans-vertical moulds, rather than traditional 30 mm polished epoxy moulds. Due to the small particle size of iron ore grains in the -200 mesh size fraction (<75 µm), not all of the surface area on a mould is needed for measurement in achieving good statistical representation. In a new study, trimming of the excess area of a mould results in a smaller sample and increases the quantity of unique samples that can fit in a newly designed trans-vertical adapter for a FEITM MLA 650 field emission gun (FEG) scanning electron microscope. The complete analysis, using a newly designed sample block holder capable of holding 98 samples, required 57 hours of running time where each sample had an average of 33?400 particles measured and identified. The analysis was calibrated to allow for off-line discrimination of hematite/magnetite. The calculated Fe-assay values derived from MLA results were compared to those from bulk sample chemical assay. This shows the Fe assay having a correlation coefficient of >0.99 when the particle count is greater than 20?000. This study represents the most expedient method yet reported to prepare well-polished samples and analyse them in a timely manner that can allow for quicker results in process mineralogy.CITATION:Grant, D C, Goudie, D J and Baird, E, 2017. ABSTRACT: An evaluation of the importance of the thermo-hydro-mechanical couplings (THM) on the performance assessment of a deep underground storage design has been made as part of the international DECOVALEX III project. It is a numerical study that simulates a generic repository configuration in the near field in a granite medium. The thermo-hydro-mechanical evolution of the whole configuration is simulated over a period of 100 years. The model used to represent the unsaturated behaviour of the various porous media makes allowance for moisture transfers through the effect of thermal and water gradients. The paper presents a comparison of the temperature, water pressure and stress fields obtained by TM, TH, HM and THM coupled calculations. The results demonstrate that temperature is hardly affected by the couplings. In contrast the influence of the couplings on the mechanical stresses is considerable. This is attributed to the key role that water has on bentonite swelling or shrinkage effects that are dependent on its saturation level variations. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG : Im Rahmen des internationalen Projekts DECOVALEX III wurde untersucht, wie groß der Einfluss thermisch-hydraulisch-mechanischer Kopplungen (THM) auf die Leistungsfähigkeit eines Konzeptes zur Lagerung hoch radioaktiver Abfälle zu bewerten ist. Bei dieser numerischen Behandlung wird eine generelle Lagerungskonfiguration in granitartigem Milieu simuliert. Die thermisch-hydraulisch-mechanischen Prozesse werden für eine Dauer von 100 Jahren simuliert. Bei dem Modell, mit dem das Verhalten der verschiedenen, unterschiedlich porösen Milieus in ungesättigtem Zustand dargestellt werden soll, werden die Feuchtigkeitstransporte infolge thermischer und hydraulischer Vorgänge berücksichtigt. Verglichen werden in diesem Artikel verschiedene Temperatur-, Wasserdruck- und Beanspruchungsfelder, die sich aus TM-, TH-, HM- und THM gekoppelten Berechnungen ergaben. Dabei stellte sich heraus, dass die Temperatur nur gering von den Kopplungen berührt wird. Die Einflüsse der Kopplungen auf die Mechanik sind hingegen bedeutend; ausschlaggebend dafür ist der Faktor Wasser, der den Bentonit je nach Sättigungsgrad quellen oder trocknen lässt. Il s’agit d’une étude numérique simulant une configuration générique de stockage en champ proche dans un milieu granitique. L’évolution thermo-hydro-mécanique de l’ensemble est simulée sur une période de 100 ans. Le modèle utilisé pour représenter le comportement non saturé des différents milieux poreux prend en compte les transferts d’humidité sous l’effet de gradients thermiques et hydriques. L'article présente une comparaison des champs de température, de pression d’eau et de contraintes obtenues par des calculs couplés TM, TH, HM et THM. Les résultats montrent que la température est peu affectée par les couplages. En revanche, l’incidence des couplages sur la mécanique est importante; ce qui est attribué au rôle majeur joué par l’eau à travers les effets de gonflement ou de retrait de la bentonite selon la variation de son degré de saturation. The Timbarra opencut gold mine is located about 30 km(19 miles) southeast of Tenterfield in northern NSW some 4 hours by car from Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland in Australia. It was a small operation designed to produce about 40000 ounces of gold per annum utilising contract mining and company owned crushing plant feeding heap leach pads. This is a standard setup except that the mine owner was in charge of all aspects of drill & blast design even though a contract drilling & blasting (shotfiring) service was being provided. The major problem was that the blasting operations were yielding massive amounts of oversize due to the jointed partially weathered nature of the granite. This was adversely affecting all downstream aspects of the operation as well reducing gold output as ore boulders were being dozed over the side of the mine as they were impinging on mining productivity. The oversize problem had to be solved as the mine was struggling to achieve design gold output. Significant design & trialing effort using minesite resources were utilised to reduce the oversize but this failed even when powder factors up to 1kg/bcm(1.68lb/yd) were used. Dyno Consult from Dyno Nobel were therefore called to investigate, review & trial options to reduce oversize from the top flitch.

Based on this study, the angle of surface natural slope is the major contributor to the incremental horizontal displacement while the total movement is also playing an important role in some cases.

The Drainage Services Department (DSD) of the Hong Kong SAR Government commissioned the design and construction of the West Kowloon Drainage Improvement, Stage 2, Phase 2, Kai Tak Transfer Scheme (KTTS) project in 2000 to relieve potential flooding in Mong Kok caused by the insufficient capacity of the existing storm water drainage system. The KTTS involves construction of a 1.5km,4.4m drainage tunnel and a 450m long box culvert, running from Waterloo Road near Hereford Road to the existing Kai Tak Nullah in San Po Kong. This paper describes the design and construction of; the bored tunnel through both hard rock and soft ground using a slurry Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), six associated access shafts, a connection structure at Waterloo Road and the box culvert connecting the bored tunnel to the outfall at Kai Tak nullah. Details will be provided on the contractor’s alternative designs adopted during the contract including the use of fibre reinforced shotcrete as one-pass temporary and permanent support for three of the shafts and modifications to the Engineer’s design for the box culvert structure.

In the operation of some flotation plants treating platinum ores it was found that there were imbalances between the inputs and outputs. The inputs and outputs were sampled as slurries and it was determined that the imbalances arose from biases in the sampling, despite the samplers having been designed according to well-established rules. The launders feeding the sample cutters, and the sample cutters themselves were redesigned using finite element analysis to model the flows. A new set of design rules were formulated. The application of a Components of Variance Analysis, to determine the variance of primary and secondary sampling and of analysis in the lab for a concentrate is presented to illustrate the need for frequent sampling of process streams.

[Certain chapters of the tentative document entitled, "Test Requirements for instruments & Apparatus to be Considered for MESA Intrinsically Safe Certification" are evaluated and supporting data are presented on certain key issues with the purpose of helping the regulatory agency in improving the above document. The subjects discussed in detail are: hot wire ignition with W and BeCu wires; the most sensitive methane-air :and propane air ratio; the ignition limits for inductive-resistive circuits in 8.3°; methane-air mixtures in the 24-OV, 100 mH-2 [ ]H range, the resistive ignition limit as a special case when L ? 0; the capacitive-resistive ignition limit representing a four ,dimensional problem is analyzed and discussed in general and the variation of the ignition limit using Vo and/or r2 as a parameter are determined experimentally. The ignition limit is also determined for the [r1 ,~ r2] = 0 case ("capacitor alone") and for the most dangerous capacitive resistive circuit combination. The ignition limits are below the limits proposed in the document. A survey of the different factors influencing the ignition is made as to their suitability to provide a constant safety factor. It is shown that a constant safety factor cannot be achieved. The best method for applying a safety factor appears to be the increase of initial pressure or use of other gas mixture. The revision of the safety factor concept and ignition limit curves is recommended.]

As far as is known at the present time, important ore occurrences at Mount Isa are restricted to the Urquhart Shale. These occur at Mount Isa itself, and some 13 miles north along strike at the Northern Leases.The primary silver-lead-zinc and copper orebodies occur as adjacent but discretc entities in lithologieally distinct host rocks. The copper orebodies occur in an envelope of "Silica Dolomite", whereas the silver-lead zinc orebodies occur in shale typical of the Urquhart Shale in general.At both Mount Isa and the Northern Leases, secondary lead orebodies occur at thc surface representing primary stratiform silver-lead-zinc sulphide accumulations in the fresh rocks at depth.Secondary copper orebodies are known only at Mount Isa, where they have formed in favourable environments, but unlike the secondary lead orebodies, not in the positions of the former primary mineralization that gave rise to them. The secondary copper is localized in shale remote from the point where the copper was released into solution by weathering. It was derived from very low grade fracture fillings and disseminations of chalcopyrite in the outcropping or suboutcropping crest of the "Silica Dolomite".Primary silver-lead-zinc orebodies arc oxidized without significant transport or secondary enrichment, but secondary copper orebodies arc characterized by considerable transport and extreme secondary enrichment.The original water table stood at approximately 1,150 ft (mine datum) and for the majority of the mine area controlled the base of complete oxidation fairly closely.An oxidized zone approximately 175 ft deep is general in the Urquhart Shale.Structures affecting ground conditions have influenced oxidation and leaching of the silver-lcad-zinc orebodies, and have had effects vital to the formation of secondary copper orebodies.

The effectiveness of an industry's safety activities can be gaged best by the accident records of that industry. In an effort to gage conditions in the petroleum industry, and with the objective of helping to reduce the number of accidents in it, the Bureau of Mines from time to time has tabulated, analyzed, and published pertinent statistical information.3/. These reports have dealt with distribution, causes, and costs and related phases of accidents for various and collective divisions of the petroleum industry in several sections of the country. This type of study aids the personnel of the Bureau in planning the course of its activities in accident-prevention work and gives useful data to persons engaged or interested in the promotion of safety in the petroleum industry, which will aid them in their efforts to reduce the number and severity of accidents. A majority of petroleum operators and "service? contractors have acknowledged their responsibility to provide their employees with safe working conditions and to their stockholders for greater economic value of invested capital by establishing safety divisions within their respective organizations. Such divisions have a primary duty, namely, to see that properly designed and guarded machinery and working equipment are furnished the employees and that they are trained in the safest practical methods of performing their work. We report 40Ar/39Ar ages for adularia and illite from veins and wall rocks at the Waihi and Favona deposits, in the Waihi district. One sample of vein adularia from the Favona deposit yielded a plateau age of 6.04 ¦ 0.06 (la) Ma, and two samples of vein adularia from the Waihi deposit yielded plateau ages of 6.17 ¦ 0.03 and 6.17 ¦ 0.09 Ma. Two samples of wall rock adularia from the Waihi deposit yielded plateau ages of 6.07 ¦ 0.06 and 6.08 ¦ 0.03 Ma. Adularia ages overlap at the 2s level, and we do not consider them to be significantly different. Two samples of illite from wall rocks at Favona have total gas ages of 5.66 ¦ 0.04 and 5.65 ¦ 0.04 Ma, and retention ages of 6.57 ¦ 0.04 and 6.61 ¦ 0.04 Ma, whereas one sample of vein illite yielded a total gas age of 5.29 ¦ 0.17 Ma, and a retention age of 6.26 ¦ 0.19 Ma. The total gas ages of illite are minimum ages that are equivalent to conventional K/Ar analyses, whereas retention ages of illite are maximum ages. Although interpretation of the illite data is complicated, the adularia results strongly suggest that the Waihi and Favona deposits formed contemporaneously in the same fossil geothermal system at 6.0 to 6.1 Ma.

Circulating Air Classification of Manufactured Sand Due to environmental concerns, the supply and use of natural gravel has been limited by the Swedish government. The Swedish concrete industry is therefore examining manufactured sand as an alternative that has equal or better product quality, and which the Swedish quarry industry already has the ability to deliver. However, in order to comply with the specifications set by the concrete industry, a better means of classification is needed, as the proportion of fine particles (filler) smaller than 63 - 125 ¦m in size must be reduced. One classification technology that meets the requirements may be air classification. This paper examines the process of circulating air classification, which is not yet commonly used in the Swedish quarry industry; suggesting that a better understanding of the process is needed. The circulating air classifier in this study has two internal machine parameters that can affect the separation point; namely, the speeds of the circulating fan and the separator fan. We study their effect on the separation point as well as the interaction between these parameters. Full-scale parameter tests are also conducted, in which size distribution is measured before and after the circulating air classification. This study shows how the different parameters affect the separation point and that it is possible to produce manufactured sand according to specifications. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD, Fluent) is used to study the internal flow of the air circulating within the classifier. A single-phase study of the flow field is conducted to support and explain the findings from the full-scale tests.

"ABSTRACTThe city of Santa Cruz, Bolivia, is historically dominated by houses and three to five storey buildings.The geology in and around the city is such that even very light buildings need to be supported onpiles. The recent increase of the Bolivian economy, notably that of Santa Cruz, has created a demandfor new residential as well as office and industrial buildings, which mostly consist of multi-storey orhigh-rise buildings with significantly larger foundation loads. Foundation piles have become largerand longer, and the load on individual piles is increased. The development has resulted in an increasein the demand for more sophisticated design and construction methods and stricter approach toverifying the quality of the construction processes and results.This paper describes to geology of the Santa Cruz region and how the geotechnical conditions areconsidered in the design and construction of piled foundations. The improvement of past constructionand design techniques, based mostly on bored piles constructed with bentonite slurry, is beingreplaced with new methods of constructing bored piles, e.g. the Full Displacement Pile (FDP) andincorporation of techniques such as enlarging the pile toe, e.g., with the Expander Body. This paperpresents the results of several full-scale tests and discusses the incorporation of the test results indesign and construction.1 GEOLOGY OF THE REGIONSanta Cruz de la Sierra is located in the eastern lowlands and sub-Andean zone of Bolivia, SouthAmerica. The area lies at an elevation of about +400 m and the geology is a Paleozoic (250 millionyears old) sedimentary basin. The soils of interest to civil engineering construction are quaternarywith the dominant minerals being calcite, silica and feldspar. The main agent is the Piray River and itstributaries. Their past meandering over the area has resulted in a sedimentation-erosionsedimentationprocess and a profile dominated by fine to medium sands with intermittent layers ofclay or clayey sand. With increasing distance from the river, the clay-containing layers are thicker.Fig.1.- View of Bolivia with location of Santa Cruz and map of Santa CruzThe upper about 15 to 18 m thick part of the profile consists of normally consolidated layers of clays,silts, sands, in various combination and thickness. Below, the soil is more homogeneous and consistsmostly of sand and gravel. The groundwater table lies typically at a depth of about 6 m in the highestpart of the city and at about 1 to 3 m depth in the lowest part of the city."

"Gas dispersion studies have been used to benchmark and optimize plant flotation performance for more than a decade, although this technology is not as widely in use as it likely should be based on the significant improvements that have been reported. Part of the reason may be a general lack of awareness within the industry of just what these improvements have been. This paper reviews a number of the reported case studies, groups them into categories of improvement, and draws some general conclusions. The paper will be of interest to plant engineers and technology providers seeking new approaches and tools for improving their own and clients’ processes.INTRODUCTIONThe sector of flotation hydrodynamics that is now known as gas dispersion technology, and the corresponding terminology, had its beginnings in the 1980’s and early 1990’s in the laboratories of McGill University where the students of Prof. J.A. Finch and Dr. C. Gomez conducted studies of gas holdup, superficial gas rate and water recovery on laboratory flotation columns (Laplante et al., 1983; Xu et al., 1991;, Banisi and Finch, 1994; Finch et al., 1999; Nesset, 2011). Sensors were developed for gas holdup (eg), gas rate (Jg) and bubble size (Db) distribution (Tavera et al., 1996: Finch et al., 1999; Dahlke et al., 2001; Chen at al., 2001; Hernandez-Aguilar et al, 2002, 2005). The sensor measurements were rapidly adapted for use in mechanical flotation machines in plant environments (Gomez and Finch, 2002; Gomez et al., 2003; Cooper et al, 2004; Torrealba-Vargas et al, 2004; Nesset et al., 2007). Somewhat parallel developments were being conducted by Gorain and colleagues at the University of Queensland’s JKMRC on pilot and industrial flotation machines using the McGill approach but utilizing alternate sensor designs for eg, Jg and Db (Gorain et al., 1997, 1999; Schwarz and Alexander, 2006) to link flotation kinetics to bubble surface area flux (Sb). Early industrial applications were those led by the university teams from McGill (Canada), the JKMRC (Australia) and the University of Santa Maria (Chile) at plants in North and South America, Australia, South Africa, Asia and Europe. Industrial organizations that brought the technology on-board in the early 2000’s included Teck Resources (then Teck Cominco), COREM, Vale (then Inco), Anglo American Platinum. Several of the major flotation cell manufacturers also purchased the McGill bubble viewer technology for their own equipment studies. The sensors have continued to evolve with multiple and continuous measurement of Jg (Torrealba-Vargas and Finch, 2006, Bartolacci et al., 2008), gas holdup by acoustic means (O’Keefe, 2007) and a combined Jg-Db device called the Anglo Bubble Sizer (Harbort and Schwarz, 2010). A review of the gas dispersion technology use and development have been provided by Gomez and Finch (2002), Harbort and Schwarz (2010) and Nesset (2010)."

"Column and other non-conventional flotation approaches continue to provide benefits where conventional flotation processes have exhibited limited success. This is particularly evident with respect to flotation of ultrafine and coarse particles. Advancements in air sparging technology have provided the ability to produce finer bubbles than previously possible. The generation of finer bubbles coupled with the froth washing capabilities of a flotation column has demonstrated improvements in ultrafine particle recovery while simultaneously producing a high-grade float product. On the other side of the spectrum, the use of these sparging technologies while applying flotation fundamentals to a fluidized-bed reactor has increased the maximum floatable particle size up to and in excess of 3 mm. Benefits of higher recoveries and reduced reagent consumption have resulted from the use of these technologies. An additional benefit includes a reduction in plant grinding requirements. As such, this paper describes the application of Cavitation-Tube sparger technology and fluidized-bed flotation (HydroFloat). A review of data from industrial and pilot-scale applications is also provided.INTRODUCTIONConventional (mechanical) froth flotation is considered the workhorse of the minerals processing industry. This low-cost process makes it possible to selectively recover minerals by exploiting the difference in surface characteristics (e.g., wettability) of the valuable component and the waste material. Unfortunately, the upper particle size limit for flotation rarely exceeds 0.600 mm, and is typically maintained at less than 0.300 mm for most industrial applications. For many commercial base metal plants, the particle size range for optimum recovery is typically between 0.01 and 0.1 mm (Lynch et al., 1981). This finding is not novel. In fact, the effect of particle size on flotation recovery was studied as early as 1931 by Gaudin et al. who showed that coarse (+0.250 mm) and extremely fine particles (-0.010 mm) are more difficult to recover than particles of an intermediate size.
