Several wall rock porphyry or pyrometascmatic copper deposits occur within the metamorphosed Paleozoic formations along the northern and eastern flanks of the Little Dragoon Mountains. Rocks ranging in age from Precambrian to Recent occur in the area. The Tertiary age Texas Canyon Quartz Monzonite intruded the sedimentary section in the eastern half of the range metamorphosing the Paleozoic carbonate units to tactites composed of garnet, diopside, and tremolite. Copper, zinc, and molybdenum minerals deposited in sites which are structurally controlled and stratigraphically favorable. Because the deposits are covered by alluvium, the information on structure, alteration, and mineralization is based upon a study of the diamond drilling programs. The mineralized district can be divided into four areas: 1) The Johnson Camp copper-zinc deposits; 2) The Dragoon copper deposit; 3) The I-10 copper-molybdenum deposit; 4) The Strong & Harris copper-zinc deposit. On the southwest end of the range beneath alluvial cover, the Cretaceous Bisbee Group was thrust over Precambrian and Paleozoic formations. The Tertiary Texas Canyon Quartz Monzonite intruded and metamorphosed them. In the upper plate, the Cretaceous sediments near the intrusive were metamorphosed to metaquartzite and andalusite and sillimanite schists. In the lower plate the Martin and Horquilla formations were marbleized. The lower Abrigo was metamorphosed to epidote rich calc-silicate tactites and biotite hornfels. A composite geologic cross section, based upon diamond drilling,, through the Dragoon copper deposit is shown in Fig. 1. The geologic events which formed this deposit are: 1. A faulted section of Precambrian Pioneer formation and diabase and Cambrian Bolsa and Abrigo formations was thrust over Pennsylvanian Horquilla formation. Gold is an important byproduct and, locally, coproduct of porphyry copper deposits, and possesses potential for discovery as the major metal in porphyry deposits in either island arcs or Cordilleran belts. Tungsten and tin occur as major components of several potentially bulk-minable porphyry deposits, as well as being byproducts from the Climax porphyry molybdenum deposit. Whereas porphyry tin systems are localized in Cordilleran back-arc settings, their tungsten counterparts appear to span a range of geotectonic settings, from Cordilleran principal arcs through back-arcs to rifts. Although silver is a common byproduct of porphyry copper deposits, it tends to be preferentially concentrated with lead and zinc on the fringes of all types of porphyry deposits and/or as late-stage superpositions; the latter situation could be of some interest in the higher parts of porphyry systems. As byproducts, rhenium, uranium, platinoids and magnetite are exploited occasionally, and rutile and the rare metals, such as tantalum and niobium, have merited consideration.

Holes cored through the Prairie Creek lamproite volcanic complex at the Crater of Diamonds State Park by companies interested in the site's commercial diamond potential give an opportunity to redefine the size and shape of the Prairie Creek pipe. Relationships of cored rock sequences and the discovery of a previously unrecognized major rock type allow a reinterpretation of the sequence and type of intrusive activity. Trench sampling of diamondiferous rock units yielded a diamond content far below what was anticipated based on an estimate from historical records. Inadequacies of shallow bulk-testing methods for a diamondiferous pipe are examined.

SCHEME DESIGN London’s Heathrow Airport, as the world’s busiest international airport, is missing one vital aspect - a dedicated rail link which connects directly to the city. All this is about to change with the construction of Heathrow Express - a fast, high quality rail service between the airport and the centre of London. It was recognised in the mid 1980s that if Heathrow was to accommodate the forecast growth in passenger numbers and the resulting increase in road traffic, a dedicated airport rail service would be vital. The main access into the centre of Heathrow is via a road tunnel with a direct link to the M4 motorway. The airport has introduced a number of traffic management schemes, but these can only achieve so much benefit. Growth in air passenger traffic is predicted to continue at an average of 4% per annum well into the next century and it was clear that significant investment was needed. Heathrow Express at a cost of over £350 million will provide this when it starts its service in June 1998. The business case for the scheme is based on a rider ship of around 15% of air passenger traffic. The initial Heathrow Express service will be based on four trains per hour, up to 8 car train lengths, providing a high speed non-stop service between the airport and central London in just 16 minutes. Initially a joint venture between the British Railways Board and Heathrow Airport, by mutual consent of the two parties, Heathrow Airport recently purchased the British Railways Board share making this one of the largest private sector rail projects currently under construction in the UK. Leaving Paddington, the main rail terminus in West London, Heathrow Express trains will travel 12 miles on the newly electrified line to airport junction, north of the airport. At this point they will leave the mainline to enter a 5 mile tunnel section that runs underneath the heart of the airport. The railway companies are responsible for track work, signalling and electrification of the 12 mile main line section including a grade separated junction over the main tracks for the Great Western Railway which links London and South Wales. "The Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown Project builds a 19km LRT corridor that includes a 10km underground portion, between Keele Street and Laird Drive. The West Tunnel Contract (ECLC1-15) includes 6.5km of twin EPB TBM bored tunnels with a 5.75m internal diameter precast concrete segment lining (PCTL), between Keele Street and Yonge Street. This paper summarizes the overall scope of work, the technical challenges faced and innovative solutions developed by the contractor during the TBM move across an existing subway tunnel using state of the art high capacity strandjack gantry crane.1. PROJECT OVERVIEW The Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) is Canada’s largest urban region, populated with over 6 million people, and is one of the most rapidly growing regions in North America. One forecast estimates that the population of this region will increase to 8.6 million by the year 2031. In September 2008, Metrolinx, an agency of the Government of Ontario, launched a 25-year regional transportation plan named “The Big Move” to cope with the expected increase in transportation demand. The Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown, one of the projects included in “The Big Move”, is a light rail transit (LRT) that will run across Toronto in an east-west direction between Mount Dennis and Kennedy along Eglinton Avenue. In October 2012, the West Tunnel Contract of the Crosstown LRT (ECLC1-15) was awarded to Crosstown Transit Constructors (CTC), a joint venture between Obayashi Canada Ltd., Kenny Construction Company, Kenaidan Contracting Ltd. and Technicore Underground Inc. The project includes approximately 6.2 km long twin bored tunnels, 9 cross passages, 1 emergency exit building, 7 sets of station headwalls, and an intermediate pair of extraction and launch shafts. Each of 6.5 km long twin tunnels are divided by the existing subway station into two drives: the first half from the launch shaft LS-1 (west of Keele Station) to the extraction shaft ES-1 (west of Eglinton West Station), and the second half from the launch shaft LS-2 (east of Eglinton West Station) to Yonge Station, as shown in Figure-1. The TBMs are extracted at ES-1 and moved to LS-2 over the existing Yonge-University Subway Line at Eglinton West Station before resumption of tunneling at LS-2."

Zoning and environmental restrictions on land usage now make open- pit quarrying more and more difficult, especially near urban areas. One option for quarry operators is to go underground for mineral production. While underground-mining costs are higher than those for open-cut work, there are several compensating advantages. In many cases it is possible to produce the same material underground without affecting land values, and the surface is preserved for industrial, residential, or agricultural purposes. Proper planning can yield underground sites which have great potential value for industrial plants, warehouses, or other business uses. It is essential to plan underground mineral extraction using a three-dimensional modular-room architectural concept to fully exploit secondary space utilization. Prior to the start of underground mining an operator must make a careful geological engineering study to deter- mine the suitability of the deposit and must prepare a plan for safe and economical mining for the purpose of converting to secondary usage.

The Acid Mine Drainage has characteristics of low pH, high concentrations of heavy metal ions, such as Fe2+, Mn2+, Cu2+ and Zn2+. In this paper, the composite particles that consisted of bentonite and steel slags were used to dispose the Acid Mine Drainage. Bentonite is the mineral materials and can adsorb heavy metal ions excellently. The steel slags are alkaline and industrial solid waste for the treatment of the Acid Mine Drainage. The main influencing factors, such as adsorbent dosages, shaking rates, concentrations of heavy metal ions, temperatures, adsorption time and pH value were studied by the static experiment. Increasing the adsorbent dosages and the concentrations of the heavy metal ions, speeding up the shaking rates, raising the temperatures, extending the adsorption time and improving pH would improve the removal efficiencies of heavy metal ions. Through considering the removal efficiencies and the treatment costs, the optimum reaction conditions for the four kinds of heavy metal ions were obtained. The adsorbent dosage 21 mg/L, the rotational speed 120 r / min, the temperature 25?, adsorption time 100 min and the initial wastewater pH 7. The four kinds of heavy metal ions existed independently in the simulated mine wastewater. The highest initial concentrations of Fe2+, Mn2+, Cu2+ and Zn2+ were 150 mg/L, 100 mg/L, 170 mg/L and 140 mg/L respectively. The removal rates were 93.42%, 92.64%, 93.86% and 95.17% respectively. The determination of the particles’ SEM-EDS Microscopic characterization showed the composite particles could play a part in neutralizing, absorbing and the chemical precipitation. The acidity decreased notably and the heavy metal ions of Fe2+, Mn2+, Cu2+ and Zn2+were adsorbed and precipitated effectively. The research results can extend the practical engineering application of the composite particles.

The concept of hypochlorite treatment prior to cyanidation in the heap leaching of low grade carbonaceous gold ores is discussed. Laboratory column leach tests using a low grade carbonaceous ore were performed to investigate the effects of pH, hypochlorite consumption and concentration, and bed height on total gold extraction. At high pH, hypochlorite stability increases and thus, hypochlorite consumption decreases. At room temperature, total gold extraction is proportional to hypochlorite consumption. However, at some point additional hypochlorite consumption does not increase gold extraction. Gold recoveries of 10% and 80% are achieved at 12 and 167 lb/ton hypochlorite consumption, respectively. Increasing hypochlorite concentration increases the rate of extraction. For a given hypochlorite consumption, gold extraction increased with decreasing ore bed height. Finally, using calcium hypochlorite results in higher gold extraction than using sodium hypochlorite at a fixed hypochlorite consumption.

The surface coal mining industry in the United States employs over 50,000 people and is responsible for 60% of domestic coal production. This represents a very significant contribution to our national economy and an important source of highly skilled and well paying jobs. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has targeted surface mining as an important research priority to reduce the social and economic costs associated with surface mining injuries and fatalities. USBM safety research focuses on the development of technologies that can enhance productivity and reduce mining costs through a reduction in the number and severity of mining accidents. This report summarizes a number of completed and ongoing research programs that address a broad range of surface mining safety problems. Research methods are described, and research products which are suitable for industry implementation are highlighted.

The views expressed in the paper are those of the authors alone and not the Australian Government or Dames & Moore. INTRODUCTION Uranium has been mined in Australia since 1954. A number of small scale mining and milling operations were active in the Northern Territory, in South Australia and in Queensland in the late fifties and early sixties. However, in the late sixties there was an increase in exploration activities in the expectation of an upsurge in world demand for uranium Substantial new resources were delineated in the Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia. The most significant deposits were located in the Northern Territory, in what is called the Alligator Rivers Region located approximately 200 km east of Darwin. The Region is in the latitude of 13° South and thus lies within the Australian tropics (Figure 1). It consists of approximately 2.3 million hectares of natural wilderness containing much spectacular and attractive scenery. The area is noted for its abundant wildlife, particularly the waterbirds that gather on the flood-plains. Much of the vegetation is diverse and interesting. The Aboriginal population still maintains elements of the traditional way of life, and the spectacular Arnhem Land escarpment contains many of the best surviving examples of Aboriginal rock art. Numerous rich archaeological sites provide evidence of continuous human habitation for tens of thousands of years. Climatically, the Region is of the tropical monsoon type with a dry season from may to September and a "wet" from November to March. High intensity short period rainfall is characteristic, and the average annual precipitation is in the order of 1 350 mm. The monthly mean temperature ranges from 25° to 30°C throughout the year. The development of regulatory controls on uranium mining in the Alligator Rivers Region has been affected by the political status of the Northern Territory. While Australia is a federation, established as an independent self-governing country in 1901, it was not until 1978 that the Northern Territory became to any real extent self-governing. Prior to 1978, the Territory was administered through a special department of the Commonwealth (ie. the Federal Government). Under the Northern Territory (Self Government) Act 1978, administrative powers similar to those possessed by the Governments of the six founding Australian states were provided to the Territory Government. However, the Commonwealth government did not transfer to the Territory all such powers and functions, and in particular there has been, since 1978, a dual role for the Commonwealth and Territory Governments in the regulation of uranium development. Details of this role are provided later in this paper. RANGER URANIUM INQUIRY By 1973, major deposits had been discovered in the Alligator Rivers Region at Nabarlek, Ranger, Koongarra and Jabiluka. The estimated reserves and mine life expectancy of these deposits are given in Table I. Other radioactive anomalies have also been identified in the area but, as yet, they have not been delineated or evaluated. [ ] In 1974, an agreement was signed between the Commonwealth Government and Peko Mines Limited and the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australia Limited for the joint development of the Ranger deposit. In July 1975, the Government announced a Commission of Inquiry under the provisions of the Commonwealth Environment Protection (Impact of Proposals) Act 1974, into the proposed Ranger development. The inquiry was known as the Ranger Uranium Environmental Inquiry or more commonly, the Fox Inquiry after the presiding Commissioner, Mr Justice Fox.

"Crossrail is Europe’s largest construction project — a new 100km rail route running through central London. A joint venture of BAM, Ferrovial and Kier (BFK) has constructed the tunnels and escalator shafts at the new Bond Street and Farringdon Stations. The recent trend in the UK industry towards sprayed secondary linings is driven by the potential for significant savings in cost and time. BFK is unique within Crossrail by constructing both sprayed and cast secondary linings. This paper presents a direct comparison between sprayed and traditional cast in situ secondary linings at Bond Street and Farringdon Crossrail Stations. An objective comparison is drawn between procurement and mobilisation periods, production rates, flexibility, tolerances and logistics in the tunnels. The technical challenges surrounding cast and sprayed secondary linings are explored, and recommendations are made of how each method could be improved for future use. INTRODUCTION It is well established that sprayed concrete offers a fast and effective method to seal the face of an excavation. In a relatively short space of time, sprayed concrete can be applied to an open face to support the short term ground loading on the tunnels during construction. Advances in sprayed concrete lining (SCL) technology — such as the use of wet mix processes, improved accelerators, fiber reinforcement, remotely controlled spraying robots, innovative surveying equipment and nozzleman competency schemes — have greatly increased the speed and safety of tunnel excavations using this technique. As a result, design engineers have become increasingly confident to use SCL primary linings as part of the permanent structural lining (Su 2014). Historically, long term ground and water pressure loads have been considered to be carried by the main structural or secondary lining, constructed using cast in situ concrete (Pickett 2014). However, the advances described above have made sprayed secondary linings a viable option, which has already been proven on the A3 Hindhead Tunnel (Arnold 2012). Sprayed concrete secondary linings offer potentially significant savings in cost and time during the construction process. The contractor does not need to procure a bespoke formwork system for each different sized tunnel — the SCL plant required is already on site for the primary lining. Each bay is sprayed with accelerated concrete, becoming self-supporting almost immediately — compared to moving and resetting the shutter, pumping concrete and waiting for it to cure. With sprayed concrete, working sequences and cross sections can easily be changed."

"There have been about 42 fatalities in underground coal mines between 1984 and 2015 where the victim was struck, pinned, or run over by a mobile machine (MM) such as a shuttle car, scoop, or battery hauler. MSHA has issued a proposed rule requiring proximity detection systems (PDS) on MMs in an effort to prevent future fatalities. Currently approved PDSs use electromagnetic (EM) technology to detect the presence of a miner and impose machine controls to prevent contact. The disadvantages of an EM-based PDS on MMs include the need for a miner-wearable component (MWC), environmental interferences, EM interferences from other devices, and low localization range and accuracy. NIOSH researchers are investigating alternate technologies that could improve the capabilities of the current PDSs. Many technologies were reviewed, and NIOSH researchers identified RFID, LIDAR, RADAR, ultrasonic detection, and computer vision as candidates for PDS development. The performance characteristics of each technology and its applicability to an underground mining environment will be discussed, along with international developments and implementations, and the concept of sensor fusion. INTRODUCTION PDSs provide safety to mine workers by detecting their presence (and in some cases location) around a machine. These PDSs provide a warning zone, which triggers an alarm, and a stop zone, which halts the machine before it contacts the miner. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) issued a final rule requiring that PDSs be installed on all continuous mining machines (CMMs) on the working section, with the exception of full-faced machines, according to a phase-in schedule for newly manufactured and existing equipment [1]. The PDSs that were designed for CMMs have since been adapted to other mobile machines. Mobile machines include scoops, which are used as general utility vehicles, as well as coal hauling machines, such as shuttle cars, ram cars, and continuous haulage systems. MSHA has examined all accident reports from 1984 to 2014, and determined that 42 fatalities could have been prevented on mobile machines had a PDS been installed [2]. As such, MSHA issued a proposed rule that would require mobile machines on working sections (with the exception of longwall sections) to be equipped with a PDS. This rule would follow a phase-in schedule for newly manufactured and existing equipment. Currently available PDSs are based on electromagnetic (EM) technology. NIOSH researchers developed a shell-based magnetic flux density distribution model [3] for determining the position of a miner near a machine. A typical system would consist of four generators positioned around the perimeter of the machine. Each generator is a coil of insulated wire wrapped around a ferrite core. The magnetic field strength is proportional to the current running through the coil. Miners working on the section have an MWC, which is a transceiver that measures the field strength emitted by the generators and transmits a data packet over an RF link which contains the field strength reading to the PDS controller mounted on the machine. The magnetic field generators are pulsed sequentially such that the MWC can identify which generator’s field strength it is reading. This type of system utilizes the principle of magnetic flux density: the closer the MWC is to the field generators, the higher the field strength reading. Thus a miner’s presence can be determined once he gets too close to the machine, because his MWC will measure a magnetic flux density beyond a certain threshold. These thresholds are utilized on a per-generator basis to “shape” the fields for both warning and stop zones around a machine, as illustrated in Figure 1."

"One method to increase the exploitation rate of a mine is the use of backfill with residual materials in exploited areas. The backfilled material is meant to support both, the walls of galleries and pillars as well as the roof of mining openings. With increasing depth, the exploitation rate diminishes fast, thus the application of backfill in order to change the layout of the mine is crucial for economic success. In result of using backfill, it is possible to change the layout of the working area with a higher ratio to excavated areas and less area occupied by pillars. Thus it is possible to boost the output of a mine by using backfill. Setting the criteria for the selection of the best possible materials and whose improvement, it is useful to know about their qualities and handicaps. The Mining Department at TU Bergakademie Freiberg is analyzing the parameters of residues from different processing methods, accrued in plants of different potash mines and blending different residues for optimization of material attributes. These were significantly characterized by basically parameters like the size and the distribution of different diameters of the grain material. INTRODUCTION The chair for underground mining methods at TU Bergakademie Freiberg is tasked with the sufficient and sustainable supply of economics with raw materials. The steady high demand, the rising prices and the finiteness of the deposits are reasons for the need of an optimized economic utilization of natural deposits, a continuous improvement of mining technics and technology. From an ecological and economical position the best possible utilization of the resources has to be achieved. Many mining operations are by reasons of the deposit not able to haul valuable minerals only, they have to haul a mixture of valuable minerals and waste rock. This hauled combination is given into the processing plant for separation and enrichment of the valuable mineral. The residuals of the processing are commonly dumped to a waste rock pile. For minimizing the size of such a waste rock pile and also minimizing the ecological footprint of a mining operation the only way is minimizing the quantity of accruing waste rock material. Both, optimization of economic utilization and also minimization of waste rock dumps can be realized in one by backfill with processing waste rock material in mined out areas. Especially in mines, mined by room and pillar method, smaller dimension of the pillars are sufficient for safety and stability. By the way less valuable minerals have to be leaved back in the mine and the mine outcome is increasing."

Within the EU-research project "Blasting Control", jointly operated with partners from France, Italy and Greece, between 1992 and 1995, the Department of Mining Engineering of the Montanuniversity Leoben, Austria took over the task to develop a diagnosis system applicable in underground drifting, in order to identify possible reasons for blast failures or poor blast performance. For that purpose 120 m of 12 m2 test galleries were excavated at two different mine sites. For every blast performed the collar and bottom position of every hole drilled, the charged hole length and the drift and face profile of the round blasted were monitored. These 'geometrical" data were put directly from the measuring devices into SURPAC, the mine planning software chosen for data analysis. Based on the data computed, 3D plots comparing actual and planned data were made visible on the screen or as hard copies. Experience from the introduction of this system into a mining operation showed, that the system developed contributes to an improved understanding of the reasons for blast failures and forms the basis for an improved blast design. The soft- ware package SURPAC was also used to train the miners directly at the mine site in order to improve the quality of their work.

MINERALS INFORMATION PROGRAM Mineral data collection by the Federal Government actually began in 1882 with an appropriation by Congress to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Although the Bureau of Mines was instituted in 1910, it was not until 1924 that the collection, interpretation, and dissemination of worldwide information on production, consumption, and availability of minerals became the responsibility of the Bureau. The objective of the Bureau's minerals information program is to maintain and provide reliable, timely, and comprehensive data for analysis of national minerals problems. This program is implemented by a staff of specialists who cover about 100 mineral commodities and the mineral industries of 168 countries. Data are also provided on the minerals industry on the State and county level. The specialists analyze information to identify trends and problems, forecast future U.S. and world supply and demand for the nonfuel minerals, and relate trends and developments to their impact on the domestic minerals industry. Data Sources and Publications The primary sources of data concerning the domestic minerals industry are the companies that produce, use, and trade in these minerals. Approximately 60,000 survey forms are sent to industry, on a monthly, quarterly, semiannual, or annual basis, to obtain the data. Domestic trade data are provided by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce. Information on mineral developments abroad is developed by Bureau specialists from mineral reports supplied by U.S. embassies worldwide, from primary source documents, from a review of the technical mining literature, and from onsite mine and plant visits in foreign countries. The information is disseminated through a number of Bureau publications: "Mineral Industry Surveys" provide aggregated data on a monthly. quarterly, or semiannual basis to give timely information on the most important mineral commodities. "Mineral Commodity Summaries," published each January, provides preliminary annual data on supply and demand and discusses significant events of the previous year. The final data are published later in the "Minerals Yearbook," which is the definitive historical record for mineral statistics. "Mineral Facts and Problems," an encyclopedic work issued every 5 years, covers industry structure, technology, supply-demand analysis. economic factors, reserves, and forecasts of U.S. and world demand for individual commodities. "Mineral Perspectives" and "Mineral Issues" cover important international mineral developments and significant issues of current U.S. policy as they relate to minerals. Discussions and analyses of mineral trends and developments also appear in other Bureau publications, such as "Minerals and Materials" and "Information Circulars." These publications provide the basis for analysis and policy determinations by the Bureau and by virtually every Federal agency concerned with minerals, defense issues, the national economy, and foreign relations. Data Bases The data bases used by the specialists for preparing publications or in response to a continuous stream of inquiries include both those that contain individual commodity data from respondents, and those that are summary data bases on production, trade, capacity, employment and a number of other minerals-related items, not all of which are derived from data reported to the Bureau of Mines. The data bases maintained on the mainframes are not accessible by non- Bureau users. We are in the midst of a transportation revolution. From the Wright Brothers to the SST. From the Toonerville Trolly to the 120-mile-an-hour Northeast Corridor train. From Christopher Columbus to Neil Armstrong. There is another side to this revolution and it is going on every day at our mines and factories. We call it bulk distribution. Perhaps ordinary sounding, but every bit as exciting as those other transportation innovations. Basically, we have gone from bag to bulk, and in the process reached that Last Frontier in manufacturing cost savings. By revitalization of our distribution system, we have made it possible for our mines and factories to realize fully the vast economies of spage-age manufacturing techniques and accomplishments. The pacesetters in this distribution revolution have been you gentlemen, the producers and shippers of dry mineral products. In this area bulk distribution grew up. And here most of the current innovations are being introduced. Management of your industry was early to realize the economic advantages of bulk distribution. Distribution costs of your products comprises a sizeable, portion of the selling price and management is sensitive of any developments which may even slightly reduce the cost of transportation, marketing or the exploration of new frontiers.

In flotation or hydrometallurgical leaching of minerals, the cumulative metals recovery for a given process condition generally approaches a maximum value or an asymptote as the process time increases. This paper discusses the experimental methods of identifying and obtaining the asymptote of metals recovery through kinetic studies. In flotation, the kinetic asymptote of metal recovery, or ultimate recovery, is a function of grinding and collector dosage, but within a realistic variable range, is not a function of pH or temperature. However, variations in grinding, collector dosage, pH and temperature, all exert noticeable effects on flotation kinetics. Frothers generally have a minor affect on the asymptote, but have a major affect on flotation kinetics. The asymptote from batch flotation is found to be identical to that of a continuous flotation. In hydrometallurgical Leaching, the asymptote of metal recovery for a given leaching system is a function of such variables as temperature, particle size, and acid concentration.

This paper discusses recent Federal Bureau of Mines research on the selective flocculation of various minerals with insoluble crosslinked starch xanthate (ISX). ISX is insoluble, has a shelf life of over a year when kept cold, and has a higher molecular weight due to cross linking than the soluble noncrosslinked starch xanthate used in previous flocculation studies on nonsulfide minerals. ISX readily flocculates a number of sulfide mineral fines but not silicious gangue. Floc formation, floc size, and settling rate are strongly dependent on pH, with the pH dependence differing for each mineral. Bornite has been selectively flocculated from bornite-quartz mixtures, and the bornite-containing flocs were separated from the unflocculated quartz using decantation and washing procedures.

"Face ignitions in underground coal mines are a major risk for underground mining operations, as they can lead to methane or coal dust explosions. The 2010 disaster at the Upper Big Branch Mine resulted in 29 fatalities due to a methane and coal dust explosion initiated from a face ignition. Much research has been conducted to mitigate face ignition hazards, from water sprays to installing passive and active explosion barriers. Despite the increased use of water sprays in U.S. coal mines, there have been more than 50 documented face ignitions in the U.S. underground coal mines since 2010, indicating that this hazard still prevails. This paper will examine the statistics of face ignitions and gas explosion in U.S. coal mines based on MSHA data. It will study factors contributing to these face ignitions and outline best practices for their prevention based on experience and practices worldwide. INTRODUCTION Methane and coal dust explosions are one of the major causes of coal mine disasters in the U.S. and around the world. Such disasters have resulted in the large number of fatalities and loss of mine infrastructure. The recent explosion at the Soma coal mine in Turkey has caused the death of 301 miners (Mining Turkey, 2014). As documented by U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA, 2015a), the U.S. coal mining industry has also experienced several catastrophic mine explosions with accidents at Upper Big Branch mine, Darby mine, Sago mine and Jim Walter Resources No. 5 mine in the last decade, causing the deaths of almost 60 miners. Every explosion requires a source of ignition, the right amount of fuel and oxygen. In underground coal mines, methane acts as a fuel while ventilation air acts as a source of oxygen. The source of ignition may vary from spontaneous combustion, electrical equipment and switchgear, mechanical heat sources, face ignitions due to friction rock-on-rock or from cutter bits and lightning strikes. Under the right conditions, energy of less than 0.3 mJ is sufficient to ignite methane-air mixtures (James, 2007) that can result in a catastrophic explosion. Much research has been done to mitigate the methane explosion hazard by proper dilution, continuous monitoring of methane and elimination of ignition sources. Historical studies indicate that face ignitions are the major cause of explosion in underground coal mining operations worldwide (Belle, Carey, and Robertson, 2012). Statistics shows that most mine disasters were started from a small face ignition, which turned into a major explosion fueled by additional methane and coal dust (Belle et al., 2012). To investigate face ignition hazards, researchers must study potential ignition sources as well as potential explosive atmospheres near mechanical coal cutting operations. Statistical analysis of U.S. coal mine face ignitions reported by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA, 2015b) shows that several factors are responsible for face ignitions."

When economic times are tough, as they are now in mining, it can feel like you need to choose between safety and cost control. Leading edge companies know that it is excellence at both that provides the best performance. FLUID POWER SYSTEMS Fluid power systems are ubiquitous in mining – longwall systems, continuous miners, drills, haul trucks and excavators, etc. And fluid power systems are getting more powerful and using higher pressures to move greater volumes and achieve higher productivity. Average operating pressures in mobile equipment has been rising to 450 bar (6,500 psi) over the last decade. With increased system pressure comes ever increasing levels of stored energy. Stored energy that, if released in an uncontrolled fashion, can do tremendous harm to people and things.Fluid power systems are composed of pipe, flexible hoses, pumps, valves and actuators. They are filled with fluid (mineral oil or fire-resistant) to transmit power to where it’s needed for performing work. With time and use fittings can loosen, component performance diminishes and hoses wear and tear. In hostile environments, like coal mining, hydraulic hoses can fail in as little as 2 years according to DGUV (umbrella association of German Accident Insurers), maybe sooner in some particularly challenging environments. FLUID POWER SYSTEM SAFETY While appearing simple and benign on the surface, fluid power systems, particularly such systems on mobile equipment, have many potential hazards. Hazards that most workers aren’t aware of – particularly young, new hires. And those hazards that can quickly turn deadly. During the past couple of years, including at last year’s SME Conference, I talked to a wide variety of mining people about high pressure fluid injection injuries. Some people, often with little or no field experience, never heard of it. But, people with mine operations / maintenance experience were almost always aware of such injuries.Some had even seen it happen right in front of them. But most claimed it didn’t happen all that often. It just wasn’t seen as a problem!"
