Stability assessment of entry roofs is an essential precursor to all underground design. Both multi-seam interaction and longwall mining can subject entries to radical changes in the surrounding stress field. Such loading changes frequently produce instability and failure in the roof, floor and pillars. Roofs are shown to be vulnerable to stress-induced failures, particularly when the load is unsymmetrical. To predict the effects of changes in stress field, roof failure conditions under increasing loads were studied using finite element analysis and body loaded photoelastic models. A large range of geologic conditions were evaluated and incorporated into the model using Monte Carlo methods. Entry analysis using the model showed the roof to be particularly vulnerable to shear with the location of the failure site changing to meet loading and geologic conditions. Results were correlated with field data to determine stress levels at which failure could be expected to occur. Based on this research a roof stability model SESAME was constructed for roof stability evaluation under specified loading conditions.

As a longwall coalface advances a caved goaf or waste region is left behind. Air flow takes place through this permeable goaf due to the pressure differentials existing across it and en route this leakage air picks up both heat and moisture. A marked deterioration in climatic conditions occurs in the face area at all points downstream of where this leakage air rejoins the main air-stream. This goaf heat source can make a very significant contribution, typically 30-40% to the rate of total heat pickup on an advancing UK longwall coalface with a VST of 40°C and hence on the climatic conditions that prevail at the return end and in the return gate of the face. The magnitude of the rate of heat collection from the goaf depends on a number of factors but it has been established that it is particularly influenced by the prevailing virgin rock temperature and the total flow rate of the leakage air. This paper proposes a model for the goaf based on a packed bed analogy and other assumptions required in order to evaluate the rate of heat pickup are identified. The outlet condition of the leakage air predicted by the model have been shown to correlate with underground measurements taken for a range of different production patterns with the face cutter at various locations on the face. The sensitivity of these predictions to variations in the input data has been tested and is commented on. At this stage of the development the capabilities and predictive limitations of the model are discussed. Further areas of investigation are suggested in order to improve the predictive ability and to extend the versatility of the model.

As most of us have learned through prior and often frustrating experience, anyone proposing to construct a new or expanded mining-ore processing facility must first contend with a rather complex array of environmental laws and permitting regulations administered by a number of different Federal, State and local agencies. At our lost count, there were about 55 federal enactments affecting base and precious metals projects. Applicable State and local laws will usually increase that number significantly. The time and costs associated with complying with all these various regulatory programs usually constitutes one of the major areas of uncertainty in the development of a proposed project. There are many in the mining industry who firmly believe that these environmental regulation and permit programs necessarily causes significant delays and increased costs in the development of a project. This belief, unfortunately, is probably a result of a basic misunderstanding of how the environmental permitting and regulatory system actually works.

INTRODUCTION Underground structures are generally regarded to be safer than surface structures during strong seismic motion, except when crossing a causative fault. Recent studies of observed earthquake damage to tunnels generally support this view, although instances of severe damage and, occasionally, collapse are reported. For proposed underground construction of sensitive structures such as nuclear power plants, liquefied natural gas facilities, and nuclear waste repositories, a verification of the seismic response of underground structures will be required.. This paper discusses the stabilization recommendations used in a study of additional costs required to protect tunnels against ground motion caused by earthquakes and underground nuclear explosions (1). The study is a part of the site investigations for possible construction of a nuclear waste repository. The additional costs estimated in the study are not presented here; only the stabilization measures are presented in the present paper. The tunnels, which would constitute the underground facilities of a possible repository, are assumed to be 5.5 m (18 ft) in diameter and to be located at a depth of 600 m (2,000 ft). Three candidate geological materials are considered: argillite (shale), granite, and tuff. Several peak ground accelerations are used: 0.3g, 0.5g, and 0.7g for earthquakes, and 0.5g, 0.7g, and 1.0g for underground nuclear explosions. Potential damage due only to shaking is considered here. This paper does not discuss problems that result from creep or sudden rupture of intersected faults or from ground failures at portals.

"The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act Public Law 109-236) was passed by Congress in response to three major underground coal mine accidents in the United States that claimed the lives of 19 miners. The Act resulted in substantial changes in the underground coal industry relative to the use of technology for mine escape, rescue, disaster response and other areas where the lack of these technologies contributed to the fatalities caused by these tragedies. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the MINER Act, which makes it an opportune time to reflect on the events that led to its passage, the changes that have been made since then, and the work that remains to be done.As discussed below, the last decade has demonstrated tremendous cooperative efforts among mining operators, technology innovators, labor, The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and state regulators, resulting in substantial improvement of the technologies used for escape and rescue and noteworthy progress toward meeting many of the goals of the MINER Act. While the MINER Act and this article pertain primarily to coal mining, many of the technologies are equally applicable to any underground mining and have already found some acceptance outside of coal.Technology gaps targeted by the MINER ActThe MINER Act addressed several technology challenges:• Problems with donning and switching between self-contained, self-rescuers (SCSRs).• Poor visibility in smoke.• No wayfinding assistance for escape from the mine.• Limited breathable air supply.• Inability to locate trapped miners.• Inability to communicate with trapped miners.• Failure of mine seals."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated rapid froth flotation through the use of more efficient bubble-particle collisions that improved the overall flotation kinetics. An in-line static mixer efficiently mixed the air bubbles, water, and ore, rapidly attaching the hydrophobic mineral to the bubble surface. As the mixture entered the flotation chamber, the hydrophobic mineral was already attached to the bubbles and was quickly floated away from the remaining ore pulp. A rougher concentrate containing 4.5 pct copper was obtained from a western porphyry copper ore containing 0.67 pct copper. Over 99 pct copper was recovered from the ore at a rate 7 times faster than conventional flotation.

An ongoing research program at the Spokane Research Center of the U.S. Bureau of Mines is directed toward investigating drilling parameters (thrust, torque, penetration rate, and drill revolutions) during the drilling of roof bolt holes. A system that measures these drilling parameters calculates the specific energy of drilling, and determines drill bit position has been developed by the Bureau and mounted on a roof bolting/drilling machine, through the use of a microcomputer, critical drilling parameters can be immediately interpreted and analyzed. This makes it possible to inform the operator of hazardous roof conditions. Initial results of this program are presented here.

In 1977, Vertical Crater Retreat (VCR) Mining was developed at the Homestake Mine and by 1983 had become a fully integrated mining method contributing 60% to total underground production. VCR has proven successful for continuous ore blocks exceeding 55,100 tons (50,000 st) with dips greater than 60" and provides a productivity average of 39 tons (35 st) per man shift (tpms) which is 92% greater than Open Cut-and-Fill. Discontinuous ore bodies, small pods, or flat structures not amenable to bulk systems are mined with Mechanized Cut-and-Fill (MCF) and have been able to achieve a 32 tpms (29 st) average productivity. Small, low grade, remnant ore bodies were not economically viable with large scale bulk techniques and couldn't support the development required for a MCF system. As a result, Homestake began researching modified bulk mining methods to increase production rates and maintain safety, while lowering costs. A modified version of VCR with significantly diminished development was prototyped in an effort to reduce initial capital investment and expedite the production phase. This modified method is called Small Block Vertical Crater Retreat (S. B. VCR). Geology The Homestake Gold Mine is located in the northern Black Hills of South Dakota at Lead. Having been active since 1876, it now extends from the surface to the 2,440 m (8000 ft) level underground.

A sampling program was conducted in 2008 to determine the run of mine characteristics of 5 coal seams. The sampling program included size analyses and float sink determinations. The samples were analyzed for ash and mercury concentrations for each size and gravity fraction. This paper will report on the sampling program, the analytical results, and the correlations determined in the data set investigated.

Using pure albite and quartz minerals, the separation of albite from quartz using mixed cationic/anionic reagent schemes is assessed through Hallimond flotation, zeta potential and diffuse reflectance FTIR studies. The reagent schemes are tested in bench-scale flotation for the separation of albite from Greek Stefania feldspar ore. The single mineral flotation tests showed the feasibility of selective albite flotation from quartz at around pH 2 using a mixture of cationic diamine and anionic sulfonate collectors or a combined cationic-anionic collector of diamine-dioleate. In contrast to the selective flotation response of albite at pH 2, where albite is slightly negatively charged and quartz possess zero charge, the zeta potential and FTIR studies elucidate similar adsorption behavior of mixed collectors on both of the minerals. The infrared spectra not only showed the co-adsorption of anionic sulfonate or oleate with diamine on the surface but also showed that the diamine adsorption increases with the presence of anionic collector. The intrusion of anionic collector in between adjacent surface alkyl ammonium ions decreases electrostatic head-head repulsion, thereby increasing the diamine adsorption by increasing the hydrophobic tail-tail bonds. The discrepancy in the flotation and adsorption results at pH 2 is attributed to the coarse and fine size particles employed in these studies, respectively. The comparable adsorption on fine particles of albite and quartz at pH 2 is explained by the interaction of ammonium ions on silanol groups by hydrogen bonding besides electrostatic interactions. The bench-scale flotation results indeed showed that selective albite flotation takes place only after desliming the feed material. An albite concentrate exceeding 10% (by weight) Na20 is produced from a material containing about 6.5% (by weight) Na20, where an albite product of more than 9% (by weight) Na20 is considered to be valuable. Manganese is about twelfth in the list of the most abundant elements in the earth's crust (Reidies, 1981). More than 150 known minerals contain manganese as an essential constituent (Mellor, 1932). In general, ores containing at least 35%Mn are classified as manganese ores, ores with 10-35%Mn are called ferroginous manganese ores, and ores containing 5-10%Mn are known as manganiferrous ores. One very important class of manganiferrous ores are manganiferrous-silver ores. They occur in the oxidized portions of the silver deposits of the Western United States. Silver is very often associated with manganese oxides which in some ore deposits are dispersed through calcite, causing the black color of the host rock, which is known as black calcite. Black calcites can occur in carbonate rocks (10-1500oz Ag/ton) and in volcanic rocks (less than 1.0oz Ag/ton).

Treatment of refractory gold ores containing arsenic have always presented a major problem in their processing to recover the contained precious metal values. The major difficulties are concerned with lower recoveries, production of hazardous fumes, effluents and residues. Because of'these arsenic related problems, many otherwise economically attractive precious metal deposits and dumps all over the world are not exploited. In recent years, treatment processee for refractory gold ores and concentrates have been explored and a few commercial operations employing roasting or pressure leaching have resulted. Roasting has limitations due to environmental constraints related to off gases. Pressure leaching involving high temperatures (180% to 200%) and pressures (400 psi) is accompanied by high capital and operating costs. An alternate route to roasting for treating pyrite and arsenopyrite ores and concentrates ia the "lime-oxygen hydromet" process carried out at a moderate temperature (100%) and pressure (100 psi). A simplified process for treating such arsenic containing ores and concentrates utilizing low temperature and pressure oxidation is presented. This low cost treatment with compressed air and lime renders arsenic as an inert component in the residue, meeting all the requirements of the EPA Toxicity Test. The precious metal values are then extracted from the autoclaved residue by standard cyanidation. This paper discusses this new development.

"INTRODUCTION Longwall coal mining leaves large areas where the coal has been made removed and the roof rock strata collapse, forming a zone of broken rock rubble called the gob. Figure 1 shows a typical longwall gob area along with the gate roads. The ventilation pattern for progressively sealed longwall panels follows a simple “U” pattern where fresh air is coursed inby to the headgate, flows along the face and exhausts through the outby tailgate as shown in figure 1(a). An important variation of this pattern is the back return (BR) arrangement where the exhaust air from the face is drawn inby and around the nearest open cross cut before it turns in the outby direction towards the exhaust fan. Figure 1(b) illustrates the use of back return. This arrangement moves the point of low pressure from the tailgate corner up to 60 m inby and thus maintains fresh air in the tailgate region that could otherwise be contaminated with gob air.The gob area may contain remnants of unmined coal or parts of overlying coal beds that continue to release methane, eventually filling the gob area with methane in concentrations far above the explosive range of about 4.5 to 15%. Many gob areas must be equipped with gob ventilation boreholes (GVBs) to extract methane, and GVBs often exhaust methane at concentrations from 50% to 90% (Saki, 2016). Due to oxidation processes occurring in the gob, the oxygen content is reduced to a low level, with nitrogen and CO2 making up the major remaining components of the gob atmosphere. FORMATION OF EXPLOSIVE GAS ZONES IN GOBS Since the longwall face area is ventilated with fresh air below 1% methane and the face and gob areas are not separated, an explosive fringe will form where the methane content lies within the explosive range and oxygen content remains above 12%. Figure 2 shows a typical development of such an EGZ. This figure is based on a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model developed by CSM researchers to analyze gas concentrations and flow patterns in longwall mining. Figure 2(a) shows the formation of EGZ in the gob with a U type ventilation scheme, where EGZ lies right behind the shields in the tailgate corner. Figure 2(b) shows the formation of EGZ in the gob combining U type ventilation scheme with BR, where EGZ is pushed away from the face deep into the gob. The CFD modeling parameters and boundary conditions have been verified with field data from two cooperating, active longwall mines (see Worrall 2012, Marts 2015, Gilmore 2015 and Saki 2016). Other mine geometries, methane inflow rates and gob permeability distributions can be modeled to establish representative gob atmospheric conditions. Two GVBs were operating in the model, extracting 0.165 m3/sec each. The methane in the working areas and returns was kept below 1%. Methane flowing into the model from a rider coal bed above the mined seam was at the rate of 0.55 m3/sec."

During the last decade, many exhaustive studies have been made of process energy requirements for the production of various metals and materials. Some excellent technical papers and text books have resulted, and some of these are included in the bibliography of this paper. These studies were, of course, prompted by the economic pressures which resulted from the beginning of the "Energy Crisis" in 1973. Our intensified consciousness of the cost of energy led, then, to a greatly improved understanding of the energy consumption attributable to individual mining, processing, and refining steps. It is worth noting, however, that an awareness of the cost of energy is not new and that efforts to minimize this cost were an important part of sound mine and plant management practice throughout the earlier days of our industry. One only has to read a few accounts of mining operations around the beginning of this century to develop an appreciation for the cost of supplying wood, coal, fuel oil, or electric power to remote locations.

INTRODUCTION This paper discusses two uranium tailings waste disposal studies that reflect the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulatory actions and their changing requirements during the mid to late 1970's. Present guidelines require that all new uranium tailings impoundments be designed and constructed to eliminate, to the extent that it is reasonably achievable, exposures and risks to the public from the tailings. This includes positive measures for control of seepage losses from the impoundment and for control of radiological releases caused by wind and water erosion. Long-term stability of the reclaimed impoundment is also a very important requirement. That is, it is intended that the tailings impoundment, once it is reclaimed, will require little or no care or maintenance as long as the uranium tailings remain a hazard. Principally because of the long-term stability objective, the NRC has now identified subsurface burial of the tailings as the "prime option" for tailings disposal. The environmental implications of these proposed regulatory actions are obviously desirable. The economic implications the actions may have on a particular project are not always so obvious because they are so dependent on environmental suitability of site conditions. Selection of a site with favorable topographic, geologic and hydrologic conditions will usually result in the most economically and environmentally attractive alternative for tailings disposal. The first project discussed in this paper was initiated before the NRC guidelines had been developed to favour subsurface burial. At the beginning, seepage and radon emission control requirements were moderate. Constraints were imposed on the design by site topography, geology, and project capitalization considerations, factors which were dealt with according to straightforward engineering and design principles. More serious constraints were imposed by changing regulatory requirements. Unlike the more usual engineeringrelated constraints, regulatory requirements were upgraded during the design process, causing the design itself to undergo numerous modifications. Most modern mines can profit from improvements in information handling. Recording systems in many cases were designed to satisfy certain necessary legal requirements, but not specifically to provide management information. As a consequence, the top managements of these properties work with cost data and production information that is dated, lacking in detail and clouded with supposition. It is the intent of this paper to describe an information system for a mine-plant complex in terms of the type of data, application areas and the existing equipment technology that may be applied to improve this situation. The economics of information processing and data handling will not be discussed in detail. This paper is based on the premise that information is something of value and that information processing like a manufacturing operation works for and is subject to management control. Information, the product, must be of quality, and the cost must be favorable in terms of its use.

The Stillwater Mining Company has acquired a Tunnel Boring Machine to expedite the mine development operations at its Stillwater Mine. The machine purchased by Stillwater was previously owned by Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works, Melbourne, Australia. The machine was manufactured by Robbins Co. of Kent, Washington. The Stillwater Mine has an extensive system of footwall laterals which are required by the mine development scheme. The initial mine plan called for in excess of 30,500 linear meters (100,000 linear feet) of footwall lateral drifts at a cross section of approximately 3.0 meters in width by 3.75 meters in height (10 feet x 12 feet). A Tunnel Boring Machine was selected for this work. The Robbins machine number is 146-193. This machine is approximately 4 meters (13 feet 5 inches) in diameter. The machine was modified extensively prior to commencing operation at the Stillwater Mine.

The majority of the regulations in Part 75 for underground coal mines have been in effect since March of 1970, almost nine years now. Although there have been some additions each year in specific areas where the need became apparent or the statute required some action, the bulk was promulgated on March 28, 1970 for the purpose of clarifying the statutory provisions of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. Many of those regulations were derived from the Federal Mine Safety Code, or from experience gained by the Bureau of Mines in the enforcement of Public Law 552. Upon passage of the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977, these same regulations remained in effect and the statutory requirements of the Act placed a responsibility upon the Secretary of Labor to promulgate additional regulations in specific areas not previously covered. The Federal inspectorate has received formal training at the National Mine Health and Safety Academy in the proper application of the regulations, as well as routine retraining and special training courses subsequent to the promulgation of new regulations. With some exceptions, the vast majority of these regulations are nothing more than good mining practice. Basically, the regulatory problems are two-fold. There are a few specific regulations that, under certain circumstances, compliance is nearly, if not actually, impossible. There is non-uniform application of enforcement of regulations by the inspectorate based on opinions developed from personal experience of inspectors or lack of experience. The record is replete with examples of overzealous inspectors applying regulations that either do not exist or have been stretched far beyond the intent of the regulations.

DTX is a 1.3-mile-long rail extension being constructed by Transbay Joint Powers Authority to extend Caltrain rail service and future California High Speed Rail service to downtown San Francisco. It includes a 3,352-foot-long mined tunnel with a cross section varying from 50 to 60 feet wide and 43 feet high to accommodate two- and three-rail tracks. DTX will be excavated in mixed-face and Franciscan Formation with ground cover ranging from 40 to 85 feet. This paper discusses how mined tunnel design has evolved since the initial preliminary design phase over 10 years ago. The current design concept for tunnel construction is also discussed.
