This paper presents the results of an investigation of the application of thermal fragmentation in Australian hard-rock, underground, narrow-vein mining. Two geologically similar samples from an underground, narrow-vein, hard-rock gold mine were collected to obtain a measure of the technology’s ability to recover ore by the creation of large thermal openings to assess the applicability of the thermal method.

Phase III of the Orme Street Combined Trunk Relief Sewer project connects two existing 2.13 m diameter combined sewers to a new 3.66 m diameter relief sewer at 7locations along a 970 m alignment in downtown Atlanta. The alignment was enveloped by adjacent structures and utilities. The project was constructed below the groundwater table through compressible residual soil, rock and mixed face using a myriad of construction techniques, including compressed air NATM and jet grouting. Numerous design and alignment changes and accommodations for existing utilities and conditions were made during construction. The authors believe this to be the ?rst NATM project in North America utilizing compressed air tunneling.

"The South Hartford Conveyance and Storage Tunnel (SHCST) project is a significant component of the Hartford Metropolitan District’s (MDC) long-term control plan (LTCP), which is overseen by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CTDEEP). This project will address a portion of the MDC’s Clean Water Project (CWP), which will reduce combined sewer overflows (CSOs), eliminate sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs), and reduce nitrogen released into the Connecticut River. The purpose of the SHCST project is to eliminate West Hartford and Newington SSOs, eliminate Franklin area CSOs discharging to Wethersfield Cove and minimize CSO discharges to the South Branch Park River. The locations of each overflow are shown in Fig. 1. In 2010, the district prepared a preliminary design report (PDR) for the SHCST project, which included relief of the Folly Brook trunk sewer and proposed to keep the tunnel boring machine (TBM) retrieval shaft within the city limits of Hartford. Figure 1 shows the 2010 PDR recommended tunnel route. Subsequent to the PDR, the objectives of the SHCST have slightly shifted. In accordance with ongoing revisions to the LTCP, relief of the Folly Brook Trunk Sewer is no longer necessary. Additionally, the MDC has decided to perform less sewer separation in the Franklin Avenue drainage area. To replace the sewer separation, new relief points are proposed within the Franklin area and will be diverted to the SHCST. Figure 1 also shows the current recommended tunnel route (Alignment F). During 2012, the MDC conducted an evaluation of the potential of connecting the proposed North Tunnel (originally proposed as an independent tunnel with its own pump station) into the South Hartford Conveyance and Storage Tunnel. This evaluation concluded that the two proposed tunnels could reasonably be connected together and operated as a single tunnel system utilizing the tunnel pump station at the eastern terminus of the South Hartford Tunnel (Fig. 2). It also was concluded that this alternative was less costly than two independent tunnel systems."

Flocculation of fine coal is usually accomplished with the addition of commercially available organic flocculants. Recently it has been shown that biopolymers derived from microorganisms can be used to flocculate coal. The biopolymers flocculate coal efficiently and render the coal surface hydrophobic. The increase in hydrophobicity can be utilized either to separate the coal flocs from mineral matter. It can also be used for reducing the moisture content of fine coal. In this regard, flocculation and settling tests of fine coal with biopolymers and synthetic flocculants was undertaken and the results are discussed here. Also, a transport model was developed for the time-dependent settling tests for fine coal.

Massive banded Fe-Zn-Cu-Pb sulfide deposits in the Bagdad are associated with metamorphosed eugeosynclinal mafic volcanic and intrusives rocks Precambrian age. The geologic environment is very similar to that of the Jerome-Prescott area which lies 70 km. east of Bagdad. Mining of massive sulfides deposits began in 1917 on the Copper King mine in spite of its early discovery and the discovery of the Old Dick mine in 1882. The first shipments of zinc ore from the Copper King were hand sorted and averaged 46.89% Zn, 5.7 oz. Ag, 3.58% Pb and 1.68% Cu. Oxidized copper was first produced from the Old Dick mine in 1943~ In all, five deposits of massive sulfide ores have been mined in the Bagdad for a total production of nearly 2 million tons with an average grade of 12.0% Zn and 3.6% Cu. The largest deposit, the Bruce mine is currently closed because reduced metal prices and has produced a total of 823,000 tons of Zn-Cu ore to date. Mining of massive sulfide ore in the Bagdad area is presently idle. However, the potential for locating yet undiscovered ore bodies is good. Exploration for new ore bodies is difficult at best due to the complex geologic history of the area, the small size of individual ore bodies and lack of understanding as to the formation of massive sulfide deposits. The purpose of this investigation was to obtain a better understanding of the host rock formations through detailed geologic mapping, petrography and chemical analysis.

The design and construction of a new 140-ton-per-day R. O. M. phosphate rock scrubbing and washing plant was undertaken by Western Knapp Engineering Company, a Division of Arthur G. McKee and Company, for the J. R. Simplot Company, Minerals and Chemical Division, Pocatello, Idaho. The new plant replaces the owner's existing facilities at Conda, Idaho, seven miles northeast of Soda Springs in the southeast corner of Idaho. Replacement of the existing facilities became necessary because of loss in production and recovery. These losses were due in part to varying grades of raw ore from the mine and to the type of process equipment used in the old plant to upgrade the ore. Increase In production and grade was further necessary by demands created by expansion of facilities in Pocatello, Idaho, where all process ore from this plant is shipped. The new process scheme includes an ore-feeding system, scrubbing, screening, classification, wet cycloning, attritioning, filtering, drying, storage and shipping facilities. Space was also left for future increases of scrubbing and classification capacity and for heavy media separation. It is the purpose of this paper to take up some of the considerations necessary in the design of small mills in order to achieve the desired objectives of a successful plant, such as production, minimum operating cost and maintenance cost.

The largest hard rock TBM ever to bore in the USA, an 11.6 m diameter Robbins Main Beam TBM, recently underwent a planned in-tunnel diameter change to a more compact 9.9 meters. The first-of-itskind conversion process for the Main Beam TBM was undertaken 2.8 km into the bore and was not done inside a shaft or pre-excavated portal. This paper will detail the unique dual-diameter machine designed for the Mill Creek Drainage Relief Tunnel in Dallas, Texas, USA, machine performance, and successful size conversion process that took place in early 2021—a process that utilized the four C’s of construction to enormous benefit: Communication, Cooperation, Collaboration and Coordination.

Rock disintegration processes are usually inefficient and costly operations in mineral beneficiation, mine development and oil well preparations. Thus, there is a strong need for improving the energy efficiency of unit operations such as drilling and comminution. The effects of selected cations and anions on drilling efficiency in a hard rock formation (Dakota Sandstone) were studied. The zeta potentials and the tensile strengths of the drilled samples were measured under similar chemical conditions. The chemicals tested included MgCl2, Na2CO3, AlCl3, NaCl and Dodecylammonium chloride. The results indicated that drilling rates can be enhanced or retarded depending on chemical conditions such as the solution pH and the type and concentration of reagents. Drilling data are correlated with mechanical (tensile strength) and interfacial (zeta potential) properties of the rock formation. The mechanisms involved are discussed in light of Rehbinder's and Westwood's theories.

Historically, geologic data has not been adequately considered in resource estimation. More recently, with the use of computers and sophisticated estimation algorithms and geostatistical justifications, geology has been downplayed further. Many reasons are given for not using geology including cost, time and irrelevance. None are valid. Boundaries defining mineral domains should be used in computer-generated resource estimates. Selected case histories show how the failure to honor geology has caused discrepancies in resource estimates of actual in-place resources. After-the-fact differences have included decreases in tonnage of up to 50% and increases up to 300%; partial to complete recategorization of material; and 50% decreases in grade. The costs of gathering and using geology are trivial compared to the potential consequences.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of Interior, is currently investigating strata interactions associated with the mining of multiple coalbeds. Strata interactions due to subsidence are a result of undermining. This study involves underground investigations at a mine where room and pillar panels are actively being developed through an area of the Sewickley Coalbed which was subsided by undermining of the Pittsburgh Coalbed. Research to date indicates that undermining had little effect on upper mine pillar stability, but had a more severe effect on the development and maintenance of entries. Roof-to-floor measurements recorded over four times more convergence in entries developed over gob as compared with entries developed over support pillars in the lower mine. Consequently, this has led to major roof falls in the active panels, resulting in considerable production delays and supplemental roof support costs.

INTRODUCTION For more than a century, artificial ground freezing has been used for groundwater control and structural support for excavations. Most of the early uses of the freezing method were for sinking deep access shafts for mines and tunnels (1,2,3,4). More recently, ground freezing has increasingly been used for construction of large diameter cofferdams and soft-ground and mixed-face tunnels (5). Although ground freezing has been used in the past-for tunnels, it was invariably used as a last resort measure, where more conventional measures could not be used. The more recent freezing applications, however, have become increasingly cost competitive with more conventional techniques, and are now being included as part of the design concept (6,7,8,9,10,11,12). The purpose of this paper is to describe some of the more recent applications of ground freezing for tunnel construction. The paper begins with a brief description of the most commonly used freezing system, the Poetsch process. Recent tunneling projects utilizing ground freezing for structural support are then discussed. The flotation system is usually distinguished from other physical chemical systems by the importance of interactions at the solid-liquid and solid-gas interfaces. In recent years, numerous quantitative studies have been made of the distribution of common collectors between the solid and aqueous solution phase. Although in flotation the main emphasis is placed on the adsorption process, chemical reactions will also take place in the bulk solution phase, These side reactions are often undesirable and will contribute towards the complex behavior of many a flotation system In sulfide flotation, the precipitation of insoluble base metal xanthates is a well-known phenomenon although the conditions under which the precipitation reaction will proceed and the magnitude of the solubility products are not known with accuracy. A knowledge of the solubility of these xanthate salts will not only be of value in flotation research, but the mill operator might be interested in knowing whether precipitation of metal xanthate can be controlled or completely prevented in the flotation circuit thereby reducing reagent consumption, For these various reasons the solubility of lead, copper, zinc, and silver ethyl xanthate was determined. The experimental techniques and results will be discussed in this paper.

A conventional paddle-type mixer and a gravity flow mixing device were evaluated for conditioning of phosphate ore with fatty acid and fuel oil, and for acid scrubbing prior to cationic flotation. Gravity flow mixing required less residence-time, but slightly higher reagent concentrations to achieve recovery levels similar to conventional conditioning. Grade was less sensitive to reagent concentration using the gravity flow mixer. For acid scrubbing, the gravity flow mixer proved equally effective. In this paper, the effect of time, pulp density, reagent concentration, and emulsification on conditioning and acid scrubbing efficiency of the two devices will be discussed.

"Chicago’s Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) is a nearly $4.0 billion and over 30 years long program and arguably the largest and longest combined sewer tunnel and reservoir system in the world. Recently, a massive tunnel construction is underway for connection of the McCook Reservoir to the existing TARP tunnel system. Once completed in two stages in 2017 and 2019, the reservoir will hold 38 billion-liters (10 billion-gallons) of combined sewer overflows (CSO) and flood waters from the city of Chicago and over 20 communities in Cook County, Illinois. McCook Main Tunnel will connect Chicago TARP’s Mainstream Tunnel to the McCook Reservoir. Connecting two 10-meter (33-ft) diameter tunnels at 92 meters (300 feet) underground has not been a simple task for the McCook Tunnel Project participants, the project owner U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), local sponsor Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) of Greater Chicago, designer Black & Veatch, and the contractor, Kiewit Infrastructure Company (Kiewit). Yet alone excavating and lining massive size tunnels, the team is also challenged with live tunnel conditions in TARP Mainstream Tunnel that carries CSO and flood flows from city of Chicago which runs full during rain events and must remain in service at all times. The project is a noteworthy feat for engineering and construction with the upcoming installation of world’s largest underground wheel gates for flow control within the tunnel. In this paper, we describe one of its kind elements of this major tunnel system along with key design and construction considerations, specifically for the live tunnel connection which is a rare occurrence in the tunneling industry. INTRODUCTION The McCook Main Tunnel system consists of a 10 m (33 ft) finished diameter and 490 m (1,600 ft) long hard rock tunnel constructed from a 27.5 m (90 ft) diameter and 92 m (300 ft) deep main gate and tunnel construction access shaft. The gate shaft houses six high head 4.4 m by 9 m (14.5 ft by 29.5 ft) wheel gates to be installed in the bifurcated and steel lined section of the tunnel. The tunnel also includes portal and energy dissipation structures as it daylights into the reservoir."

From before the turn of the century until as recently as the 1950s, relatively shallow coal reserves near the margins of the Illinois Basin were extracted by room- and pillar methods. Subsequent development has, in many cases, extended onto ground with high subsidence potential. The same state of affairs exists in many other historical coal mining districts, as well as in Illinois. Pit subsidence in Illinois is particularly common in the towns of Streator, Carterville, and Herrin, although there are others. Pit subsidence is characterized by distinct circular or oval depressions and normally is associated with shallow mining and thick soil relative to the thickness of rock.

"More than 6,300 people attended SME’s 2016 Annual Conference & Expo in Phoenix, AZ and many of them made the trip to the conference to take part in the excellent technical sessions that are presented on a yearly basis by the Society.Holding true to form, this year’s conference was full of options. In fact, this year there were 121 technical sessions and 751 presentations to chose from. The following is a sample of some of the technical sessions as seen through the eyes of the editors of Mining Engineering and SME technical papers.SME Sections Sharing Success: Changing thePublic Perception of MiningThis session was a workshop on how several local sections were effective in getting the message out to their communities and schools about the value of the extractive minerals industry. Several sections shared their outreach successes, including the Mining in Society merit badge activities by the Minnesota Section by Julie Lucas and SME’s participation in the World Scout Jamboree in Japan by Frank McAllister.Dan Alexander highlighted activities by the Pittsburgh Section, such as preparing minerals kits and pamphlets for elementary school classes and regional science fairs. The West Virginia University Student Chapter used the kits as handouts at their local gem and mineral show. School speakers in full mining gear were especially interesting to the young children.Other speakers were Michael Linn, Paradise Valley Unified School District — Business and School Partnerships; and Greg Kruse, Central Wyoming Section of SME — What makes a successful section?Engineering Competency ModelAmerican Association of Engineering Societies and the U.S. Department of Labor, with a grant from the United Engineering Foundation, developed a guide to the set of skills necessary for success in the engineering community -- Knowledge – Skills – Abilities — needed for all disciplines.Various engineering societies are now writing the Tier 5 occupation-specific requirements. Human operators, geological conditions, equipment changes, mining sequences, and roof conditions are some of the continually changing operating conditions that drive a dynamic mining environment. These dynamic characteristics make it difficult to automatically analyze mining data because attributes change as the mining environment changes. Mine monitoring systems could provide mine managers with much more useful information than they do presently, if automatic analysis were possible. Automatic analysis of sensor data is also key to autonomous mining systems. This paper describes artificial intelligence (AI) and sensor fusion based sensor data analysis techniques developed over the past four years. These techniques were used to classify machine operating events by continuously monitoring machine power usage in a continuous miner section at an under- ground coal mine. The result is a report similar to an industrial engineering time study. First, numerical pattern classification techniques broadly identify operating events. However, domain knowledge about inter-machine and intra-machine interactions is necessary to identify and refine dynamic event boundaries. By implementing AI and sensor fusion based techniques we are able to classify machine events more accurately and recognize more specific events. These techniques could easily be applied to many different mining sensor data applications

An application of goal programming (GP) in evaluation of proposed purchases of major mining machinery is presented. It incorporates historical operating data compiled on mechanical delays to production time. The goal programming technique, which is an extension of integer programming, is used to maximize an objective function. The objective function combines the capital budgeting evaluation methods of net present value, payback period, profitability index, and total net earnings as goals weighted according to a management preference. The GP method gives an optimal solution to a multiple-goal problem. A sensitivity analysis is performed to determine the effect of an increased production forecast or a tightened budget on proposal selection.

Mexico's mineral wealth has long been recognised and indeed has played a historically significant role on a world scale. The dynamics of the Mexican mineral industry have experienced a dramatic transformation especially over the last two decades. This transformation has mainly been instigated by the high growth rates and industrialisation of the Mexican economy since the 1960's. This paper focuses on the base metals sector of the industry which represents one of the major contributors to this transformation. The objective is to present a brief base metals review and to discuss some recent occurrences which pertain to this sector of the industry. This is followed by a discussion of mining's relevance in the current economic situation in Mexico. With this overview as background, the investment climate, primarily from a domestic investor's perspective and secondly in terms of foreign investment, is discussed. Finally, some recent government initiatives, including tax and accounting changes, are outlined. Any one of the sections of this paper can easily be developed into an extensive and indepth analysis; however, the intention of this paper is to provide the reader with a broad overview of the topics discussed.
