On Nov. 4, 1981 A/S Sydvaranger's 1-kt/h (1,100-stph) wet-process, iron ore ball mill completed its first four months of uninterrupted, full-load operation in Kirkenes, Norway. This 6.5-m-diam (21-ft-diam) mill is driven by a gearless ring or wraparound 8.1-MW (10,860-hp) motor at 13.1 rpm-a first of a kind in this segment of industry. This article examines reasons for selecting this type of drive over more conventional schemes, lists specific advantages of such large mills, and describes the installation in Norway. History For almost a decade, good operating experiences have been gained with 28 gearless ring motor drives in the cement industry, driving 2.5 to 4-m-diam (8.2 to 13-ft-diam) tube mills with drive powers ranging from about 3-4 MW (4,000 - 8,000 hp). Why then did the mineral ore processing industry hesitate until 1980 to adopt this successful concept for similar applications on ball, semiautogenous, and autogenous mills? There are a number of good reasons in the eyes of conservative mill builders and operators, the most commonly cited ones are: • No operating experience in this segment of specialized industry. • More severe environmental conditions in the wet ore grinding process. • An indifferent attitude of mill builders and electric motor manufacturers towards new drive technologies. • Limited confidence in solid-state power supply systems, such as frequency converters of the required size. There have been and still are numerous problems associated with low-speed geared mill drives of any kind, especially with individual motor/gear sizes approaching or exceeding about 4 MW (5,360 hp). Every mill builder knows about them, but operators learn to accept them as inevitable. The Decision to Change Three things combined to break this technological stalemate: the courage and progressive spirit of one major iron ore processor in Scandinavia, the cooperation of three experienced manufacturers, and an unusual application problem that could not be solved by any conventional approach. The last factor was surely the decisive one, but the first one does not come as a surprise either. The Swedes near Kiruna and the Norwegians around Kirkenes are experienced ore miners and processors, and much credit goes to them for technological breakthroughs in the industry. At A/S Sydvaranger in Kirkenes, above the Polar circle at about the latitude of Alaska's northern tip, the existing grinding facilities, with a total of 14 100 to 240-t/h (110 to 264-stph) ball mills, can not be expanded. Nevertheless, to increase mill throughput, only installing a larger mill in place of an existing smaller one was a practical alternative. For this replacement, the owners set requirements that seemed impossible to meet: • The old 100-t/h (110-stph) ball mill should be replaced with a new ball mill with 10 times the rated throughput, without significantly impairing the operation of the remaining mills, and without significantly changing the mill building. • The new mill should have a variable-speed drive to ultimately optimize the grinding process by means of a closed-loop process¬computer-controlled grinding cycle, and to minimize the specific energy consumption. • Availability, efficiency, and life expectancy of all new components must be higher than those being replaced. • Inrush-current and harmonic loads on the rather weak electric supply line must be minimized to ensure safe plant operation. All old ball mills at A/S Sydvaranger are the geared type, using single synchronous and wound-rotor, slow-speed motors with ring-and-pinion gears. Operators are familiar with the limitations and problems associated with such drives, and they are aware that the following items become major concerns when drive powers are drastically increased: • Gears are subject to wear and tear, require frequent maintenance, and eventual replacement of major parts. • Gears are sensitive to misalignment, overload, and thermal distortion, limiting their useful life. • On dual or quadruple drives, load-sharing and torque oscillations between motors can be a major reason for concern. • At these speeds, ring-and-pinion gears reach their torque transmission capabilities altogether at around 4 MW (5,360 hp) per motor/pinion. To obtain the desired variable-speed performance of the new drive, the only practical and economical conventional solution would have been a frequency-controlled, low- or medium-speed dual motor drive with about 8 MW (10,720 hp) of power. This, however, was not feasible because of limited floor space. Therefore, bids were solicited for the alternative drive method, the gearless ring motor. General Considerations Why are such large mills considered? After all, one could avoid all the problems by simply staying with smaller mill unit sizes. Under competitive pressures of free markets, however, grinding efficiencies and specific energy consumption become key factors in selecting new equipment. This paper describes the formulation of mine ventilation network optimization as a standard nonlinear programming problem and the solution of the problem using the generalized reduced gradient (GRG) method. In general, the GRG method is regarded as one of the most effective and efficient methods for solving large-scale nonlinear programming problems. The variables considered in the network optimization include air quantity, regulator pressure loss, and fan pressure for each branch. Each of the variables is constrained by lower and upper bounds. This facilitates proper assignments of ventilation requirements and provides a great flexibility to include various situations encountered in mine ventilation. The objective of the network optimization is to minimize the overall air power consumed by or supplied to the network; whereas the constraints are, in addition to the variable bounds, the two fundamental network laws: Kirchhoffs voltage law and Kirchhoffs current law. A computer program has been developed based on the GRG method for the network optimization. An example of network with 18 branches, 8 regulators and 3 fans is included for illustration.

The Port Radium mine of Eldorado Mining and Refining Limited, located on Great Bear Lake only a few miles from the Arctic Circle in north-western Canada, is the oldest uranium producer in Canada, The first concentrates were produced in 1933 and except for a period between 1940 and 1942 the mill has operated continuously. Although it is located in a remote area, and compared to more recent mines in other areas is a small tonnage operation, nonetheless the relatively high grade of the Port Radium ore has permitted operation to date on an economical basis. The mill process at Port Radium includes the original gravity concentration mill, and since 1952 an acid leaching plant which treats tailings from the gravity mill and tailings recovered by dredging of residues from underwater dumps in Great Bear Lake. The pregnant solution from the leach plant has to date been processed through aluminum reduction to yield an intermediate grade uranous phosphate-arsenate precipitate, Because of the rising costs of the aluminum reduction process, and its sensitivity to ore composition, Eldorado became interested in possible application to Port Radium of the solvent extraction processes of which we were obtaining increasing information in the latter part of 1954 and during 1955.

CURD started producing pellets in 1969, with one two-million ton straight grate plant. In the beginning of April '73, the second unit came on stream with an additional capacity of 3 million TPY of pellets. In January '77, the third unit started, bringing the annual capacity to 8 million TPY. For the present year 3 more units, 3 million each, are expected to begin production. CVRD's experience is given about the use of different binders and additives. Over the years several kinds of pellets have been produced to satisfy the market requirements. General quality information is given regarding each.

The purpose of this paper is to provide a method for analyzing the sequencing of mining production processes and predicting the effects of any planned changes. Included is a description of the development and utilization of a project-scheduling simulation that combines analytical scheduling with stochastic-activity durations. The simulation is demonstrated in two realistic examples: a longwall face-to-face transfer sequence and the effect of varying advance rates on longwall development sections. Statistical data that can provide a basis for more informed production decisions are generated in the form of project activity/path criticality and project-duration distributions. In both examples, a quantitative risk assessment, regarding subjective decisions in underground production sequencing, is presented.

Biological leaching using native heterotrophic bacteria was studied by the U.S. Bureau of Mines as a means of extracting manganese from a domestic low-grade wad ore. Column heap leaching simulation techniques were employed using molasses as the nutrient source for the bacteria. These column studies were designed to investigate the effects of molasses medium flow rate, concentration, and replacement interval on the extent and rate of manganese extraction. .Results showed that flow rates between 0.41 and 8.1 L/min/m2 had little impact on manganese extraction. The total amount of molasses used did have a direct effect on the extent and rate of manganese extraction. Manganese extractions over 90-pct were obtained in 12 weeks of bioleaching with 2-week medium replacement cycles.

The Israel Mining Industries Institute for Research and Development has developed, during recent years, a number of new processes for fertilizer materials. Their phosphoric acid processes, however, are capable of producing an acid of far higher quality than that normally associated with fertilizer grade acid. This paper will discuss two of these processes showing the quality attainable and the capital and operating costs for, U. S. conditions. The Standard IMI Process is based on the acidulation of phosphate rock with hydrochloric acid and involves solvent extraction for the separation of high quality, phosphoric acid from the resulting solution. The IMI Purification Process applies the same solvent extraction technique to the purification of a wet process phosphoric acid from sulfuric acidulated rock. IMI has built and operated a semi-works scale demonstration plant for the standard process. The first commercial plant was started up in; Japan in 1962. This small seven metric ton per day plant is currently producing a furnace quality acid. A larger 50 metric ton per day plant is nearing completion in Brazil. Another 50 metric ton per day plant is under design while a large plant with a capacity in excess of 150 metric ton per day is in the planning stage. Both of the latter facilities are for Israel.

NIOSH continues to conduct respirable dust control research for surface mine blasthole drilling operations. Research areas have included testing variables (shroud leakage area, drill deck cross-sectional area, shroud height, collector-to-bailing airflow ratio, etc.) that have the most impact on respirable dust control, development of a dust collector inlet hood, development of a dust collector dump point shroud, and testing of a small diameter water separating sub. This paper summarizes the results of the aforementioned research that has been completed. Additionally, past dust control research for drilling operations of both underground and surface mines completed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, created in 1910 and incorporated into NIOSH in 1997, is reviewed.

Detailed stratigraphic studies of the overburden at North Carolina Phosphate Corporation new South Creek Mine have delineated several aquifers and acquicludes within the 30-meter-thick overburden section of late Pleistocene sands and clayey sands. A major aquifer occurs in the 10-meter-thick sequence of shelly sands of the early Pleistocene Croatan Formation. The water-charged Croatan sands thicken into a paleodrainage surface on top of the Pliocene Yorktown Formation, a major aquiclude. A three-phase dewatering program is projected: 1) improve surface drainage around mine perimeter to reduce both flowage into the pit and rainfall recharge; 2) use a wellpoint system to dewater the upper 8 meters; and 3) use recharge wells along the axis of the paleo- drainage to dewater the overburden below 8 meters.

Today, the future of the coal industry is extremely bright because coal can be produced at a cost which makes it competitive with other energy sources. However, the industry has been forewarned that further cost reductions must be made if it expects to remain a serious contender in the growing energy market. Surface as well as underground operations must be improved. The very same elements which affected production a. few years ago still exist today and will continue to be present in the future. Improvement's in production mining equipment, mining methods, and auxiliary equipment have resulted in reduced costs over the past few years. Efforts must be continued toward further reducing costs in areas which have been improved previously, and new areas should be investigated for possible improvements. Therefore, new techniques must be developed which will enable the industry to augment its current efforts in reducing the cost of mining. The logical place to begin evaluating the factors affecting production and cost is in the immediate face area where a substantial part of the total cost of mining is incurred. The coal industry stands to gain much through the development of new techniques for analyzing the numerous variables affecting production and by establishing methods for eliminating or minimizing the adverse effect of those variables which can be controlled. Intuition and trial-and-error methods have been the standard means used to resolve many of the factors which influence production. As a result, many elements are overlooked or ignored because their effect on production is not pronounced and cannot be readily resolved. The need for a method of analyzing such factors was recognized by the Office of Coal Research. Therefore, in April 1962, under OCR sponsorship, a. research project was initiated at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI). The objective of the project was to identify the factors which influence mining costs in the immediate production area, and to develop methods and techniques which will enable the coal operator to minimize production costs. The objective of the research at VPI has been successful, and techniques have been developed for establishing quantitative facts concerning the interrelationships of production activities.

The depletion of bauxite reserves around the world has necessitated the search for viable alternative sources of aluminum. The major non-bauxite source of aluminum is alunite [KAl3 (SO4)2(OH)6]. Lixiviation is the common industrial process to recover aluminum from alunite. Due to the presence of quartz (40%) as the main gangue mineral, this process causes the formation of Sodium aluminosilicate and Potassium aluminosilicate complexes that leads to loss of alunite, and chemical reagents. Thus, pre-concentration of alunite is required to remove the gangue minerals. Because of the low degrees of freedom (DOF) of alunite, froth flotation, as a preconcentration method, is a viable alternative to increase selectivity in downstream processes. In this work, the possibility of Alunite preconcentration with micro flotation and mechanical flotation cells was studied. The influence of type and dosage of collector, pH, solid percent, particles sizes were considered on the flotation. Flotation tests were designed based on Taguchi method, followed by performing based on surface charge differential between alunite and quartz on direct and revers flotation. In the reverse flotation, Ca+ 2 and Ba+ 2 were used to activate the quartz surface. Under optimum conditions of reverse flotation, alunite grade and recovery were 40% and 62.1% respectively. In the direct flotation, the surface of alunite was activated by F- . The grade and recovery were 50 and 89%, respectively.

Introduction The Summitville Mine located in southwestern Colorado was added to the National Priorities List in June of 1994. Summitville was the site of mining operations that began in 1873 with the discovery and development of gold placer and lode deposits in the late 1800's. The mine site is located about 25 miles south of Del Norte, Colorado in the San Juan Mountains adjacent to the Rio Grande National Forest at an approximate altitude of 11,600 feet. The site was mined for gold, silver and copper between 1873 and 1947. The Summitville Consolidated Mining Corporation, Inc. (SCMCI), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Galactic Resources, Ltd of Vancouver, Canada ran a large tonnage open-pit mine and cyanide heap leach operation from 1986 to 1992 (Pendleton and Posey, 1992) During the mine operation by SCMCI, approximately 10 million tons of gold ore was mined, crushed and stacked on a lined leach pad. Heap leach operations experienced water balance and unplanned solution discharges from the start of the mine life. Despite the production of 249,000 troy ounces of gold during the mine operation, SCMCI was unable to meet remedial requirements and notified the state of Colorado of its intention to file a Chapter VII bankruptcy in December 1992. The EPA Region VIII Emergency Response Branch took over site operations on December 16, 1992 to prevent a catastrophic release of hazardous substances to the environment. The multiple contamination sources at the mine site are due to both historic and SCMCI mining operations. Emergency response operations at the site have prevented releases of severely contaminated solution and a permanent treatment for all waste units at the site is under investigation. A Request for Proposal (RFP) was issued in October 1993 by Environmental Chemical Corporation (ECC) at the Request of EPA Region VIII, Department of the Interior and Bureau of Reclamation. The RFP requested that interested companies provide information on their ability to implement innovative treatment technologies to improve treatment efficiency and reduce treatment costs for remediation of the heap leach pad (HLP) spent ore and ore leachate solutions. Dames & Moore and Pintail Systems, Inc. (PSI) jointly submitted a proposal suggesting application of biotreatment processes for detoxification of cyanide in spent ore and HLP leachate solutions. The proposal was accepted for pilot and field demonstration under the SPA Superfund Innovative Technology Demonstration Program (SITE) with additional funding from EPA Region VIII. This report discusses the test program and results of a Focused Feasibility Study which demonstrated biotreatment processes for spent ore cyanide detoxification.

The Bagdad district is 67 kilometers west of Prescott, Arizona, (Figure 1). The area north of the Old Dick and Bruce Mines was originally mapped by Anderson, Scholz and Strobell between 1943 and 1945, (1). The region is perhaps better known for the Bagdad porphyry copper deposit of tertiary age. However, 2 to 5 kilometers south of this deposit are several small massive sulfide occurrences in a eugeosynclinal Precambrian greenschist environment. More specifically, in. the Bridle formation of the Yavapai schist series. Three of these mines - Old Dick, Bruce and Copper Queen - were mined by Cyprus Mines Corporation between 1957 and 1977, and produced nearly 2mm tons of 3.6% copper and 12% zinc. These deposits occur at the interface between andesite and rhyolite and are stratiform in character. Certain structural and textural properties of the Bruce orebody suggest that remobilization of the massive sulfides occurred at some period during the metamorphic history of the area.

In order to simulate the operation of coal extraction machines, a portable workability instrument has been designed. Initially, the tests were performed with the instrument on modeling material, which were followed by in situ tests on coal in underground mines. The peak and mean cutting resistance and work done to cut a unit length of coal were determined for coal as well as modeling material. In addition, rebound strength and dynamic penetration tests were also performed in situ. On the basis of the cutting characteristics of coal, a "Workability Index" has been developed and its role in the judicious selection of coal cutting machines has been discussed. With reference to prior works and the strength characteristics of coal, it was found that the coal plow may not be suitable for the seams under investigation and the shearer seems to be the only choice. It has been observed that peak cutting resistance and the "Workability Index" in the case of coal as well as modeling material depend upon compressive strength. The peak cutting resistance exhibited certain dependence upon the Schmidt rebound hardness and dynamic penetration strength of coal in situ.

The title of my paper, "A Company's Response to Federal Coal Leasing," brings to mind a picture of a dog chasing its tail. This is what the coal industry, has been doing since the Federal coal leasing moratorium went into effect in 1971. We've gone around in many circles, but we are only very slowly, if at all, getting closer to catching our tails, i.e., efficient, economical, and rational Federal coal leasing. My companies, The North American Coal Corporation and its four Subsidiaries, The Falkirk and Western Plains Mining Companies and The Coteau and Missouri Valley Properties Companies, together hold in excess of 4.5 billion tons of lignite reserves in North Dakota. Some of our North Dakota properties are substantially interspersed with Federal coal, with the government holding title to the minerals in every other section. This checkerboard pattern of Federal ownership has made it difficult to develop and market some of our reserves, and, as a result, it has become imperative that we be familiar with and active in the Federal Coal Leasing Program.

Understanding mill charge motion is important. In the charge, the centre of gravity is shifted from the rotational centre of the mill system, and its motion is induced by rotation of the mill, while at the same time the charge creates a torque into the mill system. Breakage of ore particles and wear of liners/ball media are closely linked to the motion. To study these phenomena in a physically correct manner, numerical models for different parts of the mill system are needed. Validations of such models are scarce, because of the difficulty to measure in a tumbling mill. Experimental measurements in a lab mill were done for diverse load cases: varying feed materials, mill fillings, mill speeds and pulp liquids. The mill is set up to directly measure the charge-induced torque. The accuracy is good with relative uncertainty smaller than ±2% for relevant load cases. A full three dimensional numerical model of the whole mill is used to predict induced torque. Agreement between predicted and measured torque at steady-state is good. In addition, the model can accurately predict the mill start-up behavior for torque and mill power. This proves that the model is physically correct, and can be used for full-scale mills.

The knowledge of aggregate size under various chemical and hydrodynamic conditions is very important for selective agglomeration, flotation and water clarification processes. Traditionally, aggregate size measurements are conducted using an ex-situ technique or in a diluted suspension. In either case, the measurement occurs in an environment that does not resemble the actual conditions under which the aggregates are formed. In this study, an on-line scanning laser microscope has been used to study the coagula size of micronized coal suspensions as a function of pH, solids concentration and agitation intensity. A maximum aggregate size of 310 µ m was obtained under relatively quiescent conditions and at pH values near the iso-electric point (iep) of the coal. The aggregate size results compare well with the coagulation efficiency measurements obtained under the same pH conditions.

Management is a major part of sustainability research. Many different aspects of sustainability have already received significant research attention, but the management processes in mining from the perspective of their impact on society are less understood and integrated as a holistic frame. It is evident that mining technology has received major blame in past ecological disasters and major mining-induced environmental hazards, but the management-mining process has escaped unscathed. This should not have happened. Instead, the management processes should share equal blame with obsolete technology for the failure to identify and monitor potential environmental hazards before their inception of mining. We will present an emergent style of management for the future of mining. It challenges the actual ?mind-set? of mining management. It describes balance and equilibrium: physical, chemical, and biological in nature as an understanding of nature?s language, which is Geomimic along side ?the bottom line?. The goal is to minimize loss instead of maximize profits (waste design) at the design stage of mining and to develop clean technologies (nature's values) to achieve non-social environmental impacts that provide a prosperous legacy to future generations.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in partnership with Strata Products tested the sealing capability of Ventstop®? as part of an ongoing mine fire control and suppression research program. Ventstop®? is a multi-purpose, inflatable device that is produced by Minvent Solutions and is available world wide for use in the metal and nonmetal mining industry. Ventstop®? is also used in the Australian coal industry as a temporary ventilation control device. The device can be quickly deployed, is reusable and can be placed in horizontal and vertical mine voids to control dust, fumes and smoke. Deployment, multi-day inflation and air leakage tests were conducted at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Laboratory to determine the capability and limitations of Ventstop®? in a simulated coal mine setting. During the tests, Ventstop®? was also subjected to low level forces of a nearby methane gas ignition. It is thought that Ventstop®? could be used by the US coal mining industry to temporarily close an underground mine area in response to a fire or spontaneous combustion heating event, to temporarily redirect mine ventilation during longwall equipment moves or during stopping construction. This paper describes this inflatable temporary mine sealing technology and presents the results of the NIOSH tests.
